We use the COBE/DIRBE (1.2, 2.2, 60, 100, 140, and 240 $\mu$m) maps and the COBE/FIRAS spectra (for the wavelength range 100 - 1000 $\mu$m) to constrain a model for the spatial distribution of the dust, the stars, and the gas in the Milky Way. By assuming exponential axisymmetric distributions for the dust and the stars and by performing the corresponding radiative transfer calculations we closely (given the simple geometry of the model) reproduce the FIR and NIR maps of the Milky Way. Similar distributions for the atomic and molecular hydrogen in the disk are used (with an inner cut-off radius for the atomic hydrogen) to fit the gas data. The star formation rate as a function of the Galactic radius is derived from the FIR emission and is well in agreement with existing estimates from various star formation tracers. The gas surface density is plotted against the star formation rate density and an ``intrinsic'' Galactic Schmidt law is derived with excellent agreement with the ``external'' Schmidt law found for spiral galaxies. The Milky Way is found to consume $\sim 1%$ and $\sim 10%$ of its gas in the outer and inner regions respectively (for a period of 0.1 Gyr) to make stars. The dust-induced B-V color excess observed in various directions and distances (up to $\sim 6.5$ kpc) with well-studied Cepheid stars is compared with the model predictions showing a good agreement. The simple assumption of exponential distributions of stars and dust in the Galaxy is found to be quite instructive and adequate in modeling all the available data sets from 0.45 $\mu$m (B-band) to 1000 $\mu$m., Comment: 14 Pages, 10 figures

New Planetary Nebulae (PNe) were discovered through an [O III] 5007 A emission line survey in the Galactic bulge region with l>0 deg. We detected 240 objects, including 44 new PNe. Deep Halpha+[N II] CCD images as well as low resolution spectra were obtained for the new PNe in order to study them in detail. Preliminary photo-ionization models of the new PNe with Cloudy resulted in first estimates of the physical parameters and abundances. The presentation of new results from an [O III] 5007 A survey in a search for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the galactic bulge is continued. A total of 60 objects, including 19 new PNe, have been detected in the remaining 34 per cent of the survey area, while 41 objects are already known. Deep Halpha+[N II] CCD images as well as low resolution spectra have been acquired for these objects. Their spectral signatures suggest that the detected emission originates from photoionized nebulae. In addition, absolute line fluxes have been measured and the electron densities are given. We have observed S5 2007+777 and 3C371 in the B and I bands for 13 and 8 nights, respectively, during various observing runs in 2001, 2002 and 2004. The observations resulted in almost evenly sampled light curves, 6-9 hours long. We do not detect any flares within the observed light curves, but we do observe small amplitude, significant variations, in both bands, on time scales of hours and days. The average variability amplitude on time scales of minutes/hours is 2.5% and 1-1.5% in the case of S5 2007+777 and 3C371, respectively. The average amplitudes increase to 5-12% and 4-6%, respectively, on time scales of days. We find that the B and I band variations are highly correlated, on both short and long time scales. During the 2004 observations, which resulted in the longest light curves, we observe two well defined flux-decay and rising trends in the light curves of both objects. When the flux decays, we observe significant delays, with the B band flux decaying faster than the flux in the I band. As a result, we also observe significant, flux related spectral variations as well. The flux-spectral relation is rather complicated, with loop-like structures forming during the flux evolution. The presence of spectral variations imply that the observed variability is not caused by geometric effects. On the other hand, our results are fully consistent with the hypothesis that the observed variations are caused by perturbations which affect different regions in the jet of the sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The extended supernova remnant G 116.5+1.1 was observed in the optical emission lines of Halpha+[N II], [S II] and [O III]; deep long-slit spectra were also obtained. The morphology of the remnant's observed emission is mainly diffuse and patchy in contrast to the known filamentary emission seen along the western limb. The bulk of the detected emission in the region appears unrelated to the remnant but there is one area of emission in the south-east which is characterized by a [S II]/Halpha ratio of ~0.5, implying a possible relation to G 116.5+1.1. If this is actually the case, it would imply a more extended remnant than previously realized. Emission in the [O III] 5007 A line image is not detected, excluding moderate or fast velocity shocks running into ionized interstellar clouds. Our current estimate of the distance to G 116.5+1.1 of ~3 kpc is in agreement with earlier estimates and implies a very extended remnant (69 pc x 45 pc). Observations further to the north-east of G 116.5+1.1 revealed a network of filamentary structures prominent in Halpha+[N II] and [S II] but failed to detect [O III] line emission. Long-slit spectra in a number of positions provide strong evidence that this newly detected emission arises from shock heated gas. Typical Halpha fluxes lie in the range of 9 to 17 x10^{-17} erg/s/cm^2/ arcsec^2, while low electron densities are implied by the intensities of the sulfur lines. Weak emission from the medium ionization line at 5007 A is detected in only one spectrum. Cool dust emission at 60 and 100 microns may be correlated with the optical emission in a limited number of positions. Surpisingly, radio emission is not detected in published surveys suggesting that the new candidate remnant may belong to the class of "radio quiet" supernova remnants., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We have observed S4 0954+658 in the BVRI bands in 2001, and in the BI bands in 2002. The observations resulted in almost evenly sampled light curves, 3-8 hours long, with an average sampling interval of ~5-15 min. Because of the dense sampling and the availability of light curves in more than one optical bands we are able to study the intra-night flux and spectral variability of the source in detail. Significant observations were observed in all but one cases. On average, the flux variability amplitude, on time scales of minutes/hours, increases from ~2-3% in the I, to ~3.5-5.5% in the B band light curves. We do not detect any flares within the individual light curves. However, there is a possibility that the April 2001 and late May 2002 observations sample two flares which lasted longer than ~1-3 days. The evidence is only suggestive though, due to the limited length of the present light curves with regard to the duration of the assumed flares. No spectral variations are detected during the April 2001 observations. The source flux rises and decays with the same rate, in all bands. This variability behaviour is typical of S4 0954+658, and is attributed to geometrical effects. However, significant spectral variations are observed in May 2002. We find that the spectrum hardens/softens as the flux increases/decreases, respectively. Furthermore, the "hardening" rate of the energy spectrum is faster than the rate with which the spectrum becomes "redder" as the flux decays. We also find evidence (although of low statistical significance) that the I band variations are delayed with respect to the B band variations. If the May 2002 observations sample a flaring event, these results suggest that the variations are caused by energetic processes which are associated with the particle cooling and the source light travel time scales., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We address the problem of modeling the far-infrared (FIR) spectrum and deriving the star-formation rate (SFR) and the dust mass of spiral galaxies. We use the realistic physical model of Popescu et al. (2000) to describe the overall ultra-violet (UV), optical and FIR spectral energy distribution (SED) of a spiral galaxy. The model has only three free parameters: SFR, dust mass, and the fraction of the UV radiation which is absorbed locally by dense dust in the HII regions. Using this model, we are able to fit well the FIR spectra of 62 bright, IRAS galaxies from the "SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey" of Dunne et al.(2000). As a result, we are able to determine, among others, their SFR and dust mass. We find that, on average, the SFR (in absolute units), the star-formation efficiency, the SFR surface density, and the ratio of FIR luminosity over the total intrinsic luminosity, are larger than the respective values of typical spiral galaxies of the same morphological type. We also find that the mean gas-to-dust mass ratio is close to the Galactic value, while the average central face-on optical depth of these galaxies in the V band is 2.3. Finally, we find a strong correlation between SFR or dust mass and observed FIR quantities like total FIR luminosity or FIR luminosity at 100 and 850 $\mathrm{\mu m}$. These correlations yield well defined relations, which can be used to determine a spiral galaxy's SFR and dust-mass content from FIR observations., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication A&A

We present the first CCD flux-calibrated images of the snr G 82.2+5.3 in major optical emission lines. The [O III] 5007 line provides the first direct evidence of optical emission originating from G 82.2+5.3. Filamentary emission is detected in the west and east areas, roughly defining an ellipsoidal shell. The [O III] emission is rather well correlated with the radio emission suggesting their association, while typical fluxes are found in the range of 20-30x10^{-17} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} arcsec^{-2}. Deep long-slit spectra taken at specific positions of the remnant verify that the filamentary emission originates from shock heated gas with shock velocities ~100 km/s and low electron densities, while the diffuse [O III] emission in the south results from photoionization processes. The X-ray surface brightness is quite patchy, missing obvious limb brightening and is dominated by a bright bar-like emission region which is off-set from the geometric center by ~9'. The X-ray emission is thermal and requires two temperatures of 0.2 keV and 0.63 keV. The bright bar region shows overabundant Mg, Si and Fe, which might indicate still radiating ejecta matter. The azimuthally averaged radial surface profile is consistent with the matter density changing with distance r from the center ~e^{-r/r_0} with a characteristic angular length of 36', or, alternatively, with an r^{-1/2} density profile. The matter inside the remnant is quite likely structured like a porous cloudy medium. The average matter density is ~0.04 x d_{1.6}^{-0.5}. Because of the low density and the long cooling times involved the remnant is more likely to be in the adiabatic phase, which is consistent with the densities derived for the X-ray plasma and the optical line emission, but it is not excluded that is has reached the radiating phase., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We have observed BL Lacertae in the B, R and I bands for 2 nights in July, 1999, and 3 nights in July, 2001. The observations resulted in almost evenly sampled light curves, with an average sampling interval of ~5 min. The source is significantly variable in all bands. On average, the variability amplitude increases from ~5% in the I band, to ~5.5% in the R and ~6.5% in the B band light curves. The rising and decaying time scales are comparable within each band, but they increase from the B, to R and I band light curves. The optical power spectrum shows a red noise component with a slope of ~ -2. Cross-correlation analysis shows that in most cases the delay between the variations in the B and I band light curves is less than ~ 0.4 hrs. The cross-correlation functions are asymmetric, implying complex delays of the I band variations with respect to the B band variations. Furthermore, in one case we find that the I band variations are significantly delayed (by ~0.2 hrs) with respect to the B band variations. We also detect significant spectral variations: the spectrum becomes steeper as the flux increases, and the flattest spectral index corresponds to the maximum B band flux. Our results imply that the fast, intra-night variations of the source correspond to perturbations of different regions in the jet which cause localized injections of relativistic particles on time scales much sorter that the average sampling interval of the light curves. The variations are controlled by the cooling and light crossing time scales, which are probably comparable., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present preliminary results from a study of the seeing at Skinakas Observatory in Crete, Greece. The measurements have been made during the years 2000 and 2001 using a two-aperture Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM). Deep CCD exposures of the peculiar supernova remnant CTB 80 in the light of major optical lines have been obtained. These images reveal significant shock heated emission in the area of the remnant. The sulfur line image shows emission in the north along the outer boundary of the IRAS and HI shells. The comparison between the [OIII] and [OII] line images further suggest the presence of significant inhomogeneities in the interstellar medium. The flux calibrated images do not indicate the presence of incomplete recombination zones, and we estimate that the densities of the preshock clouds should not exceed a few atoms per cm^3. The area covered by the optical radiation along with the radio emission at 1410 MHz suggest that CTB 80 occupies a larger angular extent than was previously known., Comment: 19 pages, 6 png figures. Wide field CCD observations of three, less known, supernova remnants. Filamentary and diffuse emission is discovered from the supernova remnant G67.7+1.8. Emission can also be seen in the ROSAT All Sky Survey data which indicate an extended hard X-ray source. The optical radiation from the G31.5-0.6 area shows weak sulfur emission and is probably not related to the remnant. Weak sulfur emission is also observed from W51C or G49.2-0.7. However, a small patch of emission in the south-east seems to emit strong sulfur emission. Results from long slit spectra are also presented., Comment: 16 pages, 4 png figures. We investigate how significant the spiral structure is on calculations concerning radiative transfer in dusty spiral galaxies seen edge-on. The widely adopted exponential disk model (i.e. both the stars and the dust are distributed exponentially in the radial direction and also perpendicular to the plane of the disk) is now subject to a detailed comparison with a realistic model that includes spiral structure for the stars and the dust in the disk. In particular, model images of galaxies with logarithmic spiral arms are constructed, such that the azimuthally averaged disk is exponential in radius and in height, as the observations suggest. Then, pure exponential disk models (i.e. with no spiral structure) are used to fit the edge-on appearance of the model images. As a result, the parameters derived after the fit are compared to the real values used to create the spiral-structured images. It turns out that the plain exponential disk model is able to give a very good description of the galactic disk with its parameters varying only by a few percent from their true values., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication A&A

The opacity of spiral galaxies is examined by modelling the dust and stellar content of individual galaxies. The model is applied to five late-type spiral galaxies (NGC 4013, IC 2531, UGC 1082, NGC 5529 and NGC 5907). Having analyzed a total of seven galaxies thus far, the five galaxies mentioned above plus UGC 2048 and NGC 891 presented in (Xilouris et al. 1997, 1998), we are able to draw some general conclusions, the most significant of which are: 1) The face-on central optical depth is less than one in all optical bands indicating that typical spiral galaxies like the ones that we have modelled would be completely transparent if they were to be seen face-on. 2) The dust scaleheight is about half that of the stars, which means that the dust is more concentrated near the plane of the disk. 3) The dust scalelength is about 1.4 times larger than that of the stars and the dust is more radially extended than the stars. 4) The dust mass is found to be about an order of a magnitude more than previously measured using the IRAS fluxes, indicating the existence of a cold dust component. The gas-to-dust mass ratio calculated is close to the value derived for our Galaxy. 5) The derived extinction law matches quite well the Galactic extinction law, indicating a universal dust behaviour., Comment: 13 pages. High-resolution plasma observations are analyzed which were performed during four successive inbound passes of the ISEE 1 and 2 spacecraft. A total of nine magnetopause crossings were made near the subsolar point under widely differing orientations of the interplanetary magnetic field. It is found that (1) large fluctuations that often appear to be temporal in nature characterize the magnetosheath flow near the magnetopause; (2) the plasma density and pressure between about 0.1 and 0.3 earth radius outside the magnetopause often begin to decrease gradually as the magnetopause is approached, in conjunction with an increase in magnetic-field strength; (3) the magnetopause, in cases where it can be well resolved, exhibits fluctuations in density, pressure, and bulk velocity about average magnetosheath values; and (5) the only thick (low-latitude) boundary layer observed was characterized by sharp changes at its inner and outer edges.
