With the objective to investigate associations between sociodemographic characteristics and participation in interventions designed to increase participation in cervical cancer screening among under-screened women, we randomized a random sample of 6000 women in Norway aged 35-69 years who had not attended cervical screening for ≥10 years to receive either (i) a reminder to attend regular screening (control), (ii) an offer to order a self-sampling kit (opt-in), or (iii) a self-sampling kit unsolicited (send-to-all). We analyzed how sociodemographic characteristics were associated with screening participation within and between screening arms. In the send-to-all arm, increased screening participation ranged from 17.1% (95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 10.3% to 23.8%) to 30.0% (95% CI = 21.5% to 38.6%) between sociodemographic groups. In the opt-in arm, we observed smaller, and at times, non-significant increases within the range 0.7% (95% CI = -5.8% to 7.3%) to 19.1% (95% CI = 11.6% to 26.7%). In send-to-all versus control comparisons, there was greater increase in participation for women in the workforce versus not (6.1%, 95% CI = 1.6% to 10.6%), with higher versus lower income (7.6%, 95% CI = 2.2% to 13.1%), and with university versus primary education (8.5%, 95% CI = 2.4% to 14.6%). In opt-in versus control comparisons, there was greater increase in participation for women in the workforce versus not (4.6%, 95% CI = 0.7% to 8.5%), with higher versus lower income (6.3%, 95% CI = 1.5% to 11.1%), but lower increase for Eastern European versus Norwegian background (-12.7%, 95% CI = -19.7% to -5.7%). Self-sampling increased cervical screening participation across all sociodemographic levels, but inequalities in participation should be considered when introducing self-sampling, especially with the goal to reach long-term non-attending women., (© 2024 The Author(s). The human papillomavirus (HPV) is threatening human health as it spreads globally in varying degrees. On the other hand, the speed and scope of information transmission continues to increase, as well as the significant increase in the number of HPV-related news reports, it has never been more important to explore the role of media news coverage in the spread and control of the virus. Using a decreasing factor that captures the impact of media on the actions of people, this paper develops a model that characterizes the dynamics of HPV transmission with media impact, vaccination and recovery. We obtain global stability of equilibrium points employing geometric method, and further yield effective methods to contain the HPV pandemic by sensitivity analysis. With the center manifold theory, we show that there is a forward bifurcation when R 0 =1. Our study suggested that, besides controlling contact between infected and susceptible populations and improving effective vaccine coverage, a better intervention would be to strengthen media coverage. Japan is lagging in cervical cancer prevention. The effectiveness of a self-sampling human papillomavirus (HPV) test, a possible measure to overcome this situation, has not yet been evaluated. A randomized controlled trial was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-sampling HPV test on detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse (CIN2+) and screening uptake. Women between 30 and 58 years old who did not participate in the cervical cancer screening program for ≥3 years were eligible and assigned to the intervention group (cytology or self-sampling HPV test) or control group (cytology). Participants assigned to the intervention group were sent a self-sampling kit according to their ordering (opt-in strategy). A total of 7337 and 7772 women were assigned to the intervention and control groups, respectively. Screening uptake in the intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group (20.0% vs. 6.4%; risk ratio: 3.10; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.82, 3.42). The compliance rate with cytology triage for HPV-positive women was 46.8% (95% CI: 35.5%, 58.4%). CIN2+ was detected in five and four participants in the intervention and control groups, respectively; there was no difference for intention-to-screen analysis (risk ratio: 1.32; 95% CI: 0.36, 4.93). Self-sampling of HPV test increased screening uptake; however, no difference was observed in the detection of CIN2+, probably due to the low compliance rate for cytology triage in HPV-positive women. The relationship between the incidence of bovine teat papillomatosis and the activity of haematophagous flies was investigated in Japan. A total of 15,737 flies consisting of 33 species were collected by dry ice-baited mosquito net (DMN) trap and a sweep net from udders of cattle. Simulium aokii (Takahasi) of Simuliidae (black flies) was the predominant species, followed by S. tobetsuense Ono and S. iwatense (Shiraki). Simulium aokii had the highest peak in October, followed by September. Numbers of blood spots from the bites per teat in nulliparous cattle were significantly correlated with numbers of S. aokii collected by DMN trap. Numbers of teats with warts and spots of blood from the bites per teat were significantly more abundant in anterior teats than posterior teats. The average incidence of teat papillomatosis in nulliparous cattle was significantly higher than that in parous cattle, and the highest incidence by month was in May, followed by April. Although bovine papillomavirus (BPV) DNA was not detected in flies examined, the presence of black flies and blood spots from their bites were associated with subsequent high incidence of growing warts. In particular, it would pay to give attention to species such as S. aokii that severely attack udders in the present locality. High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections can progress to cervical cancer which is the fourth most common cancer in women globally. In Scotland, the incidence of cervical cancer has a strong socioeconomic deprivation gradient disproportionately affecting women from more deprived areas. An HPV vaccination programme was initiated in Scotland in 2008 targeting girls aged 12-13 years with a catch-up campaign running for the first three years for girls aged up to 18 years. The programme has evolved over the last 16 years with changes in the type of vaccine, dosing schedules and the extension of the programme to boys and gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men. Vaccine uptake in Scotland has historically been high but has gradually decreased over time and disparities exist in women from more deprived areas of Scotland. The ability to link national immunisation and screening databases in Scotland has allowed direct monitoring of the impact of the HPV vaccine on virological and histological outcomes. Analyses of this linked data have demonstrated real-world evidence of high vaccine effectiveness against HPV infection, cervical disease, and cervical cancer with evidence of herd immunity in unvaccinated women. Continued monitoring is crucial to assess the duration of protection, the impact of vaccine and dosing schedules changes and the emergence of potential type replacement. With the World Health Organisation's aim to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem by the next century addressing the inequalities in cervical cancer incidence will be crucial. Background: Anal cancer is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly HPV-16, and is preceded by anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs). The incidence of anal cancer is highest among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV (MSMLWH) and increases with age. However, most previous studies of anal HPV infection and anal HSIL were performed on men under 50 years old, and relatively little is known about HSIL among older MSMLWH or MSM not living with HIV (MSM-Not-LWH)., Setting: We enrolled MSM who were aged 50+ during 2018-2022 in San Francisco, CA., Methods: One hundred twenty-nine MSMLWH and 109 MSM-not-LWH participated. All participants had anal HPV DNA testing (Atila Biosystems) and high-resolution anoscopy with a biopsy of visible lesions., Results: Among MSMLWH, 47% had anal HSIL, 19% had HPV-16, and 51% had other oncogenic anal HPV types (excluding HPV-16). Among MSM-not-LWH, 37% had anal HSIL, 22% had HPV-16, and 34% had other oncogenic anal HPV types. Increasing age was not statistically associated with prevalent HSIL, HPV-16, or other oncogenic HPV infections in MSMLWH or MSM-not-LWH. HPV-16 (odds ratio: 45.1, 95% confidence interval: 15.8-129); other oncogenic HPV types (odds ratio: 5.95, 95% confidence interval: 2.74-12.9) were associated with increased odds of anal HSIL, adjusted for age, income, education, and HIV status., Conclusion: The prevalence of oncogenic anal HPV, anal HPV-16, and anal HSIL remains very high in older MSMLWH and MSM-not-LWH. Background: It is important to assess the relationship between specific HPV genotype or multiple infection and cervical cytology. The protection provided by the HPV vaccine is type-specific, and the epidemiology feature of coinfections needs to be investigated. The aim is to provide baseline information for developing HPV vaccination and management of HPV-positive populations in the region., Methods: A total of 3649 HPV-positive women were collected from 25,572 women who underwent 15 HR-HPV genotypes and ThinPrep cytologic test (TCT) results. Logistic regression was used to determine the correlation between the risk of cytology abnormalities and specific HPV infection. We calculated odds ratios (ORs) to assess coinfection patterns for the common two-type HPV infections. chi-squared test was used to estimate the relationship between single or multiple HPV (divided into species groups) infection and cytology results., Results: The results showed there was a positive correlation between HPV16 (OR = 4.742; 95% CI 3.063-7.342) and HPV33 (OR = 4.361; 95% CI 2.307-8.243) infection and HSIL positive. There was a positive correlation between HPV66 (OR = 2.445; 95% CI 1.579-3.787), HPV51 (OR = 1.651; 95% CI 1.086-2.510) and HPV58(OR = 1.661; 95% CI 1.166-2.366) infection and LSIL. Multiple HPV infections with α9 species (OR = 1.995; 95% CI 1.101-3.616) were associated with a higher risk of high-grade intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) compared with single HPV infection. There were positive correlations between HPV66 and HPV56 (α6) (OR = 3.321; 95% CI 2.329-4.735) and HPV39 and HPV68 (α7). (OR = 1.677; 95% CI 1.127-2.495). There were negative correlations between HPV52, 58, 16 and the other HPV gene subtypes., Conclusion: HPV33 may be equally managed with HPV16. The management of multiple infections with α9 may be strengthened. The 9-valent vaccine may provide better protection for the population in Chongqing currently. Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is among the leading cause of sexually transmitted infections, particularly prevalent among sexually active individuals. While many HPV infections clear up over time, some may progress to various cancers such as anal cancer, cervical cancer and, vaginal cancer. This study examines the prevalence of different HPV genotypes, classified as high-risk (HR) and low-risk (LR), among females of various age groups who visited the laboratory in Karaj., Material and Methods: Genital specimens were gathered from the individuals involved in the study and subjected to DNA extraction (DNA/RNA extraction AmpliSense, Moscow, Russia) followed by amplification using Real-Time PCR. HR- and LR-HPV genotypes were identified using the GenoFlow HPV Array test kit (GenoFlow; DiagCor Bioscience, Hong Kong) and homemade HPV genotyping kit. Demographic information such as age, was examined alongside statistical virological data., Results: Overall, 367 (17%) out of the 2109 (100%) female cases tested positive for HPV. Among these, 219 (46.2%) were classified as low-risk, 44 (9.3%) as potentially high-risk, and 211 (44.5%) as high-risk. The highest percentage of positive test results was detected in individuals under 30 years old (35%) and those aged 40-50 (18%). Individuals in the < 30 age group were primarily infected with HR genotypes. The most commonly identified genotypes overall were HPV-16 (11.7%), HPV-54 (10.3%), HPV-56 (8.4%), HPV-40 (8.1%). The lowest frequency was observed for HPV-70, HPV-71, HPV-82, and HPV-90, each recorded in only a single case., Conclusion: Our results highlight the notable occurrence of HPV among females who visited the laboratory in Karaj, especially in the < 30 age group. Identifying HPV-16 as the most prevalent genotype in our examination highlights the necessity of tailored interventions for specific age ranges. Background: Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) plays a key role in the onset of cervical cancer. This study was designed to examine the epidemiological trends and genotype distribution of HPV from 2014 to 2023 in the plateau region of Southwest China., Methods: The findings could offer valuable insights for clinical screening of cervical cancer and the formulation of HPV vaccination policies. This retrospective study analyzed 66,000 women who received HPV-DNA testing at the First People's Hospital of Qujing, Yunnan, China, between 2014 and 2023. The cohort consisted of 33,512 outpatients, 3,816 inpatients, and 28,672 individuals undergoing health examinations. Cervical cells were collected for DNA extraction, and PCR amplification along with Luminex xMAP technology were used to detect 27 HPV genotypes. The data analysis was conducted using GraphPad Prism and IBM SPSS Statistics 27 software., Results: The overall HPV infection rate at the First People's Hospital of Qujing declined from 24.92% in 2014 to 16.29% in 2023, averaging 16.02%. Specific infection rates were 18.50% among outpatients, 12.97% among inpatients, and 13.53% for health examination attendees. The predominant high-risk HPV genotypes identified were HPV52 (2.61%), HPV16 (2.06%), HPV58 (1.81%), HPV53 (1.55%), and HPV39 (1.09%). Meanwhile, the most frequent low-risk HPV genotypes were HPV6 (1.30%), HPV61 (1.21%), and HPV11 (0.85%). In HPV-positive cases, the distribution of single, double, triple, and quadruple or more infections were 79.90%, 15.17%, 3.59%, and 1.33%, respectively. The proportions of pure LR-HPV, pure HR-HPV, and mixed infections were 22.16%, 67.82%, and 10.02%, respectively. Age-specific analysis revealed a bimodal distribution of HPV infection, with the infection rate rapidly decreasing from 44.02% in the ≤ 19 age group to 19.55% in the 20-29 age group and 13.84% in the 30-39 age group, followed by a gradual increase to 14.64% in the 40-49 age group, 16.65% in the 50-59 age group, and 22.98% in the ≥ 60 age group. The coverage rates of the three available vaccines are all below 50%. The results of this study indicated a declining trend in HPV prevalence in the plateau region of Southwest China over the period from 2014 to 2023, especially in the reduction of genotypes targeted by vaccines., Conclusion: There were significant variations in the genotypes prevalent among different age groups, years, and patient sources within the same region. The underwhelming vaccination rates emphasize the critical need for developing either a multivalent vaccine or a personalized vaccine that targets the HPV genotypes common in the Chinese population. Background: Understanding the proportion of invasive cervical cancer (ICC) caused by different human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes can inform primary (ie, vaccination) and secondary (ie, screening) prevention efforts that target specific HPV genotypes. However, using the global literature to estimate population attributable fractions (AFs) requires a methodological framework to address HPV genotype-specific causality from aggregated data. We aimed to estimate the proportion of ICC caused by different HPV genotypes at the global, regional, and national level., Methods: This systematic review identified studies reporting HPV genotype-specific prevalence in ICC or people with normal cervical cytology. We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science up to Feb 29, 2024, using the search terms "cervix" and "HPV", with no language restrictions. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated by comparing HPV genotype-specific prevalence between HPV-positive ICC and normal cervical cytology with logistic regression models, adjusting for region, year of paper publication, and HPV primer or test. HPV genotypes with a lower bound to the 95% CI of the OR greater than 1·0 were judged as causal to ICC. Corresponding regional genotype-specific AFs were calculated as regional HPV prevalence in ICC multiplied by (1 - [1 / OR]) and were proportionally adjusted to total 100%. Global AFs were calculated from regional AFs weighted by number of regional ICC cases in 2022 (GLOBOCAN)., Findings: The systematic review identified 1174 studies with 111 902 cases of HPV-positive ICC and 2 755 734 of normal cervical cytology. 17 HPV genotypes were considered causal to ICC, with ORs ranging widely from 48·3 (95% CI 45·7-50·9) for HPV16 to 1·4 (1·2-1·7) for HPV51. HPV16 had the highest global AF (61·7%), followed by HPV18 (15·3%), HPV45 (4·8%), HPV33 (3·8%), HPV58 (3·5%), HPV31 (2·8%), and HPV52 (2·8%). Remaining causal genotypes (HPV35, 59, 39, 56, 51, 68, 73, 26, 69, and 82) had a combined global AF of 5·3%. AFs for HPV16 and 18 and HPV16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58 combined were lowest in Africa (71·9% and 92·1%, respectively) and highest in central, western, and southern Asia (83·2% and 95·9%, respectively). HPV35 had a higher AF in Africa (3·6%) than other regions (0·6-1·6%)., Interpretation: This study provides a comprehensive global picture of HPV genotype-specific AFs in ICC, before the influence of HPV vaccination. Background: Human papilloma virus (HPV) related cancers of the oropharynx are rapidly increasing in incidence and may soon represent the majority of all head and neck cancers. Improved monitoring and surveillance methods are thus an urgent need in public health., Main Text: The goal is to highlight the current potential and limitations of liquid biopsy through a meta analytic study on ctHPVDNA and TTMV-HPVDNA. It was performed a Literature search on articles published until December 2023 using three different databases: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Studies that evaluated post-treatment ctHPVDNA and TTMV-HPVDNA in patients with HPV + OPSCC, studies reporting complete data on the diagnostic accuracy in recurrence, or in which the number of true positives, false positives, true negatives, and false negatives was extractable, and methods of detection of viral DNA clearly defined. The meta-analysis was conducted following the Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) reporting guidelines. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of ctHPVDNA and TTMV by ddPCR to define its efficacy in clinical setting for the follow up of HPV-OPSCC., Conclusion: The 12 studies included in the meta-analysis provided a total of 1311 patients for the analysis (398 valuated with ctHPVDNA and 913 with TTMV-HPVDNA). Pooled sensitivity and specificity were 86% (95% CI: 78%-91%) and 96% (95% CI: 91%-99%), respectively; negative and positive likelihood ratios were 0.072 (95% CI: 0.057-0.093) and 24.7 (95% CI: 6.5-93.2), respectively; pooled DOR was 371.66 (95% CI: 179.1-918). The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.81 (95% CI, 0.67-0.91). Liquid biopsy for the identification of cell free DNA might identify earlier recurrence in HPV + OPSCC patients. At the present time, liquid biopsy protocol needs to be standardized and liquid biopsy cannot yet be used in clinical setting. In the future, a multidimensional integrated approach which links multiple clinical, radiological, and laboratory data will contribute to obtain the best follow-up strategies for the follow-up of HPV-OPSCC., (© 2024. Background: Cervical cancer, predominantly caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), is a major health challenge in India, with high morbidity and mortality rates. Given India's vast geographic and socio-economic diversity, understanding regional variations in HPV prevalence is crucial for developing targeted and effective public health interventions. This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to elucidate the prevalence of HPV among cervical cancer patients in India., Methods: A literature search was executed across PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science up to December 07, 2023. Observational studies reporting HPV prevalence among cervical cancer patients in India are included. A Modified Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used for quality assessment. A random-effects meta-analysis was used to determine pooled HPV prevalence, and heterogeneity was evaluated using the I² statistic. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to assess result stability and investigate heterogeneity sources. All statistical analyses were performed using R software version 4.3., Results: The meta-analysis included 17 studies with a total of 2529 cervical cancer cases, of which 1977 were HPV-positive. The pooled HPV prevalence was 85% (95% CI: 71-92%), with substantial heterogeneity (I² = 94%). Subgroup analysis by geographic zones showed notable differences: South (88%, 95% CI: 76-95%), North (73%, 95% CI: 1-100%), East (99%, 95% CI: 1-100%), Central (71%, 95% CI: 54-84%), and West (77%, 95% CI: 0-100%). Sensitivity analysis demonstrated the consistency of the results, and a reanalysis, excluding influential studies, yielded a prevalence of 82% (95% CI: 67-91%)., Conclusion: Our analysis reveals a high prevalence of HPV in cervical cancer patients in India, with significant regional variations. The observed heterogeneity highlights the complexity of HPV epidemiology in India and necessitates further research to explore underlying causes and regional characteristics. The association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in anal lesions still remains unclear. Aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of simultaneous infection of HPV and Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Trichomonas vaginalis in individuals screened for HPV anal infection. A total of 507 anal samples were tested for both anal HPV and STIs: 16% resulted positive for one or more non-HPV STIs. Specifically, C. trachomatis, M. genitalium, and N. gonorrhoeae were detected in 8%, 5%, and 4% of cases, respectively. Two groups were considered, including a positive STI group and a negative STI group. The prevalence of HPV was similar in patients in both groups: high risk (HR)-HPV and low risk (LR)-HPV were 67% and 53% versus 62% (p = 0.361) and 54% (p = 0.864) of patients, respectively. However, HPV 16, 18, 35, 51, 59, and 69 were significantly more frequent in patients tested positive for other STIs versus HPV infection alone (p < 0.05). No significant differences between the two groups were observed in vaccination coverage, 28% versus 32% (p = 0.463), and HIV status, 86% versus 84% (p = 0.658). Background: Latinas experience the greatest cervical cancer incidence compared with other ethnic/racial groups in the United States (US) due in part to significant disparities in screening uptake. Social and structural conditions that impede access to and participation in screening include language barriers, concerns about documentation status, logistical issues (e.g., transportation, limited clinic hours), and cultural beliefs regarding modesty and promiscuity. To overcome these challenges, self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing has emerged as a potentially promising method for promoting cervical cancer screening among this population. Thus, this systematic review aimed to assess the acceptability of HPV self-sampling among US Latinas., Methods: Using EBSCOhost and PubMed databases, we searched for studies published in the past two decades (2003-2023) that described participation in HPV self-sampling among Latinas. Background: Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection remains a key risk factor for cervical cancer. HPV-based primary screening is widely recommended in clinical guidelines, and further longitudinal studies are needed to optimize strategies for detecting high-grade cervical lesions compared to cytology., Methods: From November 2015 to December 2023, 31,942 participants were included in the real-world observational study. Among those, 4,219 participants underwent at least two rounds of HPV tests, and 397 completed three rounds of HPV tests. All participants were tested for high-risk types of HPV 16/18/31/33/35/39/45/51/52/56/58/59/66/68 (hrHPV) and low-risk types of HPV6/11 genotyping. Some participants also received cytology or colposcopy with pathology., Results: In the cross-sectional cohort, the prevalence of hrHPV and all HPV subtypes was 6.6% (2,108/31,942) and 6.8% (2,177/31,942), respectively. The three top hrHPV genotypes were HPV52 (1.9%), HPV58 (0.9%), and HPV16 (0.9%). Age distributions showed two peaks at 45-49 and 60-65 years. For the primary screening cohort, the hrHPV prevalence rate increased from 4.8% in 2015-2017 to 7.0% in 2020-2020 and finally reached 7.2% in 2023. For the longitudinal cohort study, the hrHPV prevalence rates in the repeated population (3.9, 5.3, and 6.0%) were lower than the primary hrHPV screening rates (6.6%), which indicated that repeated screening might decrease the prevalence rate. Methodologically, the hrHPV (89.5%) and the screening group of 16 subtypes (92.3%) demonstrated superior sensitivity than the cytology group (54.4%). Moreover, the longitudinal study indicated that the persistent hrHPV subgroup had a significantly higher ( p  = 0.04) incidence of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and more histology progression events (7/17 vs. 0/5) than the reinfection group., Conclusion: The study indicates a rising high-risk HPV prevalence in Dongguan, with repeated screening reducing this trend. Background: Oral focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH) is an uncommon infection affecting humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and howler monkeys. This study describes 10 cases of free-ranging brown howler monkeys (Alouatta guariba clamitans) diagnosed with FEH and Alouatta guariba Papillomavirus 1 (AgPV 1)., Methods: We analyzed demographic characteristics, rescue conditions, clinical and pathological findings, and species-specific behavior factors in these cases. The study assessed the frequency of occurrence and potential contributing factors of FEH and AgPV 1 infection., Results: The frequency of FEH was 8.13%. Most affected howlers were adult or geriatric males with comorbidities or stressful conditions. Clinical and pathological observations were consistent with AgPV 1 infection. Species-specific behaviors and environmental stressors were identified as contributing factors., Conclusions: FEH associated with AgPV 1 affected mainly adult or geriatric males with ongoing comorbidities or stressful conditions. Background: Esophageal carcinoma is a growing concern in regions that have a high incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection such as East Africa. HPV, particularly the high-risk genotypes, is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for esophageal carcinoma. We set out to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of high-risk HPV in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks with esophageal carcinoma at Bugando Medical Center, a tertiary referral hospital in Mwanza, Tanzania, East Africa., Methods: A total of 118 esophageal carcinoma FFPE tissue blocks, collected from January 2021 to December 2022, were analyzed. Genomic DNA was extracted from these tissues, and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to detect HPV using degenerate primers for the L1 region and type-specific primers for detecting HPV16, HPV18, and other high-risk HPV genotypes. Data were collected using questionnaires and factors associated with high-risk HPV genotypes were analyzed using STATA version 15 software., Results: Of the 118 patients' samples investigated, the mean age was 58.3 ± 13.4 years with a range of 29-88 years. The majority of the tissue blocks were from male patients 81/118 (68.7%), and most of them were from patients residing in Mwanza region 44/118 (37.3%). Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (ESCC) was the predominant histological type 107/118 (91.0%). Almost half of the tissue blocks 63/118 (53.3%) tested positive for high-risk HPV. Among these, HPV genotype 16 (HPV16) was the most common 41/63 (65.1%), followed by HPV genotype 18 (HPV18) 15/63 (23.8%), and the rest were other high-risk HPV genotypes detected by the degenerate primers 7/63 (11.1%). The factors associated with high-risk HPV genotypes were cigarette smoking (p-value < 0.001) and alcohol consumption (p-value < 0.001)., Conclusion: A substantial number of esophageal carcinomas from Bugando Medical Center in Tanzania tested positive for HPV, with HPV genotype 16 being the most prevalent. This study also revealed a significant association between HPV status and cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption. Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is strongly associated with cervical cancer with almost all cases being associated with the infection. Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women in Zambia and the fourth leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. However, there is limited data on the burden and associated factors of HPV in sub-Saharan Africa. This study therefore aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of HPV infection in the Southern province of Zambia., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at Livingstone University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) among 4,612 women from different districts of the southern province being screened for HPV infection between September 2021 and August 2022. Demographic and clinical data were collected from an existing laboratory programmatic database. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the factors associated with HPV infection., Results: The study participants had a median age of 39 years [interquartile range (IQR) 30, 47]. The prevalence of HPV infection was 35.56% (95%CI). At multivariable analysis, the factors associated with a positive HPV result were younger age (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 0.98; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.98-0.99; p. value 0.001), having provider collected sample (AOR 2.15; 95%CI 1.66-2.79; p. value <0.001) and living with HIV (AOR 1.77; 95%CI 1.22-2.55; p. value <0.002)., Conclusion: The prevalence of HPV in women in the southern province of Zambia is high, and likely influenced by age and HIV status. Additionally, the outcome of the HPV test is affected by the sample collection method. Cervical cancer screening has reduced morbidity and mortality in many countries, but efforts to optimize screening modalities and schedules are ongoing. Using data from a randomized trial conducted in British Columbia, Canada, in conjunction with a provincial screening registry, Gottschlich and colleagues demonstrated that the estimated risk for precancerous disease (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades 2 or worse) at 8 years following a negative human papillomavirus (HPV) test was similar to the current standard of care (Pap testing after 3 years). The study supports extending screening intervals for those with a negative HPV test beyond currently recommended 5-year intervals. In an ideal world, the resources saved through less frequent routine cervical screening could be redirected to increasing screening uptake and follow-up of abnormalities to improve equity in cervical cancer prevention. However, implementation of extending screening intervals remains less than straightforward in settings with fragmented healthcare systems that lack information systems to support patient call/recall, such as the United States. To achieve the full promise of primary HPV testing, stakeholders at every level must commit to identifying and addressing the diverse spectrum of barriers that undergird existing inequities in care access, appropriately resource implementation strategies, and improve health information systems. The risk associated with single and multiple human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) remains uncertain. This study aims to explore the distribution and diagnostic significance of the number of high-risk HPV (hr-HPV) infections in detecting CIN, addressing a crucial gap in our understanding. This comprehensive multicenter, retrospective study meticulously analyzed the distribution of single and multiple hr-HPV, the risk of CIN2+, the relationship with CIN, and the impact on the diagnostic performance of colposcopy using demographic information, clinical histories, and tissue samples. The composition of a single infection was predominantly HPV16, 52, 58, 18, and 51, while HPV16 and 33 were identified as the primary causes of CIN2+. The primary instances of dual infection were mainly observed in combinations such as HPV16/18, HPV16/52, and HPV16/58, while HPV16/33 was identified as the primary cause of CIN2+. The incidence of hr-HPV infections shows a dose-response relationship with the risk of CIN (p for trend <0.001). Compared to single hr-HPV, multiple hr-HPV infections were associated with increased risks of CIN1 (1.44, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20-1.72), CIN2 (1.70, 95% CI: 1.38-2.09), and CIN3 (1.08, 95% CI: 0.86-1.37). The colposcopy-based specificity of single hr-HPV (93.4, 95% CI: 92.4-94.4) and multiple hr-HPV (92.9, 95% CI: 90.8-94.6) was significantly lower than negative (97.9, 95% CI: 97.0-98.5) in detecting high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion or worse (HSIL+). However, the sensitivity of single hr-HPV (73.5, 95% CI: 70.8-76.0) and multiple hr-HPV (71.8, 95% CI: 67.0-76.2) was higher than negative (62.0, 95% CI: 51.0-71.9) in detecting HSIL+. We found that multiple hr-HPV infections increase the risk of developing CIN lesions compared to a single infection. Colposcopy for HSIL+ detection showed high sensitivity and low specificity for hr-HPV infection. Objectives: This study aimed to assess associations of potential risk factors with human papillomavirus (HPV) seropositivity among men who have sex with men (MSM) and compare these to risk factors for anal and penile (HPV) deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-positivity in the same study population., Methods: Seropositivity and anal and penile HPV DNA-positivity were determined for seven high-risk HPV genotypes for MSM aged 16-24 years participating in Papillomavirus Surveillance among STI clinic Youngsters in the Netherlands (PASSYON) 2009-2021. Logistic regression models were conducted to assess risk factors for seropositivity, anal and penile HPV DNA-positivity., Results: Overall, 1019 MSM were included. HPV-16 and -18 were most common for serology, and anal and penile HPV DNA-positivity. Although no clear similarities were observed for most risk factors for HPV seropositivity and anal or penile DNA positivity, receptive anal intercourse (RAI) was the strongest associated risk factor for both seropositivity ('RAI ever' adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 3.50, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.56-7.88; 'RAI previous 6 months' aOR 2.17, 95% CI 1.44-3.26) and anal DNA-positivity ('RAI previous 6 months' aOR 1.67, 95% CI 1.09-2.56)., Conclusions: Our study is suggestive of site-specific immune response after HPV infection; RAI might lead to anal HPV infections and consequently to seroconversion. Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health concern worldwide. Untreated STIs may have serious sequelae, particularly in pregnant women. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of screening and treating common STIs in women during pregnancy in Bangladesh., Methods: Women were enrolled from four maternity clinics/hospitals serving the lower-middle class population in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The participants were interviewed, and vaginal swab samples were collected by clinical staff. Specimens were tested for Neisseria gonorrhoeae , Chlamydia trachomatis , Trichomonas vaginalis and high-risk Human Papilloma Viruses (HPVs) using GeneXpert (Cepheid, Sunnyvale, California). Women were informed of their test results and were provided treatment for curable infections. A test of cure was performed., Results: Out of 1157 pregnant women approached, 1000 (86.4%) participated. Ninety-one percent women learned of their test results on the same day of testing. Out of the 996 valid results, 7 (0.7%) tested positive for Chlamydia trachomatis and 1 (0.1%) for Trichomonas vaginalis . There were no gonorrhoea cases. Out of the 971 women with valid results for high-risk HPVs, 46 (4.7%) tested positive., Conclusions: Screening women for STIs during antenatal care was highly feasible and well-accepted in Bangladesh. While the prevalence of common curable STIs was very low, hrHPV infection prevalence was moderately high. There is limited understanding of epidemiology and time trends of human papilloma virus (HPV)-driven head and neck cancers (HNC) in Japan, especially outside of the oropharynx. To assess HPV-driven HNC, a non-interventional study (BROADEN) of HNC patients diagnosed in 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 was conducted in Japan. Adult patients with oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, laryngeal, hypopharyngeal or oral cavity cancers were included in this study. HPV was centrally tested using p16INK4a immunohistochemistry, HPV-DNA PCR and HPV E6*I mRNA. HPV attributability required positivity in at least two tests (p16INK4a immunohistochemistry, HPV-DNA PCR, HPV E6*I mRNA) in the oropharynx, and HPV-DNA and HPV E6*I mRNA positivity for non-oropharynx sites. Nineteen hospitals included a total of 1108 patients, of whom 981 had valid samples. Men accounted for 82% of HNC diagnoses. Patients in the earlier cohort were younger and included a higher percentage of smokers. There was an increasing trend of HPV-driven oropharyngeal cancer over the last decade, from 44.2% to 51.7%. HPV attribution in nasopharyngeal cancers was 3.2% in 2008-2009 and 7.5% in 2018-2019; and 4.4% and 0% for larynx respectively. In total, 95.2% of HPV-driven HNC were attributed to HPV genotypes included in the 9-valent HPV vaccine being HPV16 the most prominent genotype. These results suggest that an epidemiologic shift is happening in Japan, with a decrease in smoking and alcohol use and an increase in HPV-driven HNC. Objective: Around 70% of vaginal cancers and 40-50% of vulvar cancers are attributable to human papillomavirus (HPV). Globally the burden of these diseases is estimated to grow due to the increasing HPV prevalence and rapidly aging global population. We aimed to examine if HPV screening for cervical cancer has an additional beneficial effect in preventing vaginal and vulvar cancers. To assess this, we used long-term follow-up data from the Finnish randomized HPV screening trial., Methods: Between 2003 and 2008, over 236,000 women were individually randomized (1:1) to primary HPV or cytology screening in Southern Finland. We followed this cohort up to the year 2020. To compare the study arms, we calculated site-specific and pooled incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and mortality rate ratios (MRRs) for vaginal and vulvar cancers using Poisson regression., Results: During 3,5 million person-years of follow-up, the IRR for vaginal cancer in the HPV arm compared to the cytology arm was 0.40 (95% CI 0.17-0.88) and the corresponding MRR was 0.74 (95% 0.21-2.24). The corresponding IRR for vulvar cancer was 0.73 (95% 0.50-1.08) and the MRR was 0.64 (95% 0.23-1.62). The pooled IRR was 0.67 (95% 0.47 ̶ 0.95) and MRR 0.67 (95% 0.31 ̶ 1.37)., Conclusion: We found lower incidence of vaginal cancers with HPV screening compared to cytology screening. Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may cause substantial individual suffering and a large economic burden for society. This study examined the seroprevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis , Mycoplasma genitalium , herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, and several human papillomaviruses (HPV) in the Swedish population over time., Methods: The study population consisted of 30-year-old women attending maternity care, and 50 year-old men and women attending health check-ups, from 1975 to 2018. Antibody status was determined by multiplex serology and quantified using median reporter fluorescence intensity (MFI)., Results: A total of 891 samples were analysed (519 from 30-year-old women, 186 from 50 year-old women and 186 from 50 year-old men). Of these, 41.5% showed seropositivity for Chlamydia trachomatis , 16.7% for Mycoplasma genitalium , 70.5% for HSV-1, 14.9% for HSV-2, 13.2% for high-risk HPV, and 8.3% for low-risk HPV. Seropositivity for Mycoplasma genitalium , HSV-1 and especially Chlamydia trachomatis decreased over time., Conclusions: There was a decrease over time in Chlamydia trachomatis seroprevalence, probably due to contact tracing, testing and early treatment; this might also have affected Mycoplasma genitalium seroprevalence. Background: France has the sixth highest incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) in Europe, but the epidemiological impact of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) remains poorly documented. The objective of our study was to assess the proportion of OPCs caused by HR-HPV in Paris, and its suburbs, over the four past decades. This area accounts for almost one-fifth of the total population of France., Methods: OPCs diagnosed in 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2020/2021 in two of the main referral cancer centers for HNCs in Paris and its suburbs were retrieved from the tumor biobanks. HPV status was determined by p16-staining and HPV-DNA detection. Samples were considered HPV-driven if both assays were positive. Results were compared to the French cancer registry data., Results: Samples from 697 OPC patients were assessed (including 82 % of all samples diagnosed in 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, 2021). The proportion of HPV-driven cases rose from 2.7 % to 53 % between 1981 and 2021. HPV16 was the dominant genotype during the study period. Of patients with HPV-driven OPC, 81 % were male and 42 % were smokers versus 80 % and 92 % in their HPV-negative counterparts. The age of OPC patients increased significantly, during the study period, independent of their HPV status CONCLUSION: The proportion of HPV-driven OPCs has significantly increased in Paris and its suburbs, during the last four decades. Purpose: To assess the prevalence and subtypes of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia (OSSN) in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) positive and negative patients in South Africa., Basic Procedures: This study was a single center retrospective cross-sectional study, conducted at Tygerberg Hospital, Western Cape, South Africa. We assessed 63 histopathologically confirmed OSSN formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks from 2015-2023. The presence of HPV was determined using the Hybrispot Direct Flow Chip Kit. Corresponding clinical data was retrieved from the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) central data warehouse., Main Findings: Of the confirmed OSSN samples, 66.7% tested positive for HPV (95% confidence interval [CI] 54-77.3%). Of the 42 HPV positive samples, 38 (90.5%) had one or more known genotypes detected and 4 had unknown genotypes. The most prevalent subtypes were HPV 11, 16 and 18 (found in 61.9%, 52.4% and 33.3% of HPV positive samples respectively). 88.9% of the lesions biopsied were from HIV positive patients, of whom 56.4% had a CD4 + count of < 200 cells/µL. A lower median CD4 + count was detected among HIV positive patients with invasive squamous cell carcinoma compared to those with moderate dysplasia (p < 0.0198)., Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of HPV in OSSN in South Africa. Background: Syphilis and human papillomavirus (HPV) are sexually transmitted infections affecting women in the same risk group. Thus, the main objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of HPV in a population of women with and without syphilis and observe the characteristics of HPV cervical lesions when coinfection occurs. Sociodemographic factors associated with coinfection were also evaluated., Methods: This case-control study was conducted at a Brazilian HIV/STD testing and training center. Study groups were composed of women with (case) and without syphilis (control), paired by age. The presence of HPV, HPV subtype, and lesion severity were investigated. All women were subjected to a sociodemographic interview, clinical data collection, cell collection for cytopathological analysis, and a hybrid capture test for HPV diagnosis. The chi-square test was used for statistical analysis., Results: The sample consisted of 176 women, 88 in each group. The prevalence of HPV was 14.8 % in the case (n = 13) and 18.1 % in the control group (n = 16), and there was no statistically significant difference between them. Illiterate individuals were more prevalent in the control group (p = 0.023). Considering women with suggestive signs of STIs, 30 % (6) of the patients and controls had high-risk HPV, and 15 % (3) had coinfection. The cytopathological assessment showed no differences between the groups concerning cellular atypia. However, ASC-US and ASC-H (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance and high-grade) were only found in women with coinfections, with 75 % of these patients testing positive for high-risk HPV. Considering the distribution of lesions on the cervix, the HSIL (high-grade intraepithelial lesion) was assessed in high-risk HPV patients, both cases and controls., Conclusions: The prevalence of HPV was not increased in patients infected with syphilis. Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a risk factor for the development of penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC). It remains inconclusive whether HPV-related PSCC has a different prognosis from non-HPV-related PSCC., Objective: To investigate the relationship between HPV status and survival as well as temporal changes in the proportion of HPV-related PSCC., Design, Setting, and Participants: A retrospective cohort of 277 patients treated in Norway between 1973 and 2022 was investigated for HPV DNA in tumor tissue. The chi-square test for trend in proportions enabled investigation of temporal changes in the HPV-related proportion of PSCC patients treated in Western Norway (n = 211)., Results and Limitations: HPV DNA was detected in tumor tissue from 131 (47%) patients. Stratified by HPV status, 5-yr CSS did not differ between groups (p = 0.37). When investigating only node-positive patients, however, presence of HPV DNA was an independent predictor of better survival in multivariable Cox regression after adjustment for age, nodal stage, and adjuvant therapy (hazard ratio 0.54, 95% confidence interval: [0.30-0.99], p = 0.04). In cases from Western Norway, an increasing proportion of HPV-related cases over time was found (p = 0.01). Background: High-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) is a known cause of cervical cancer (CC). Latvia has a high incidence of CC compared with the average incidence in the European Union. This study aims to fill the data gap on the HR-HPV burden in Latvia, providing information on its prevalence and associated factors., Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2021 to April 2022. Participants 25-70 years old visiting a general practitioner (general population) or those referred to a colposcopy clinic with changes in their cervical cytology (colposcopy population) collected vaginal self-sample and completed a paper-based questionnaire. Samples were analyzed with Cobas 6800 System (Roche) for HPV16, HPV18 and other HR-HPV (HPV31/33/35/39/45/51/52/56/58/59/66/68). Descriptive statistics for categorical variables were performed. The Chi-square test was used to determine for the statistical significance of differences in the proportions of the dependent variable between subgroups of the independent variable. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression were used to identify factors associated with positive HR-HPV status. Results were considered statistically significant at P < 0.05., Results: A total of 1274 participants provided a valid sample. The prevalence of any HR-HPV infection was 66.8% in the colposcopy group and 11.0% in the general population. Factors associated with positive HR-HPV status were marital status single/divorced/widowed (vs. married/cohabiting) [adjusted OR (aOR) 2.6; P = 0.003], higher number of lifetime sex partners [aOR 5.1 (P < 0.001) and 4.0 (P = 0.001)] for six or more and three to five partners in the general population; in the colposcopy group, the statistical significance remained only for Latvian ethnicity (vs. other) (aOR 1.8; P = 0.008) and current smoking (vs. never) (aOR 1.9; P = 0.01)., Conclusion: We documented a comparison to European Union HR-HPV infection burden in Latvia. Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignant tumours. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main cause of this cancer so that it could be prevented by screening and early treatment. Developing reginal screen protocols of maximum public health efficacy requires in-depth understandings of local HPV distribution and consequential cancer risks. Therefore, test results of HPV genotyping, cytology testing (TCT) and colposcopy inspection with biopsy were collected in this retrospective research. Data included by this research involved 63,906 women received screen related tests from Shenzhen Baoan Shiyan People's Hospital and the subsidiary institutes between 2017.01 and 2023.05. 10,238 colposcopies were performed in this period collecting 8,716 samples and 814 high-grade CIN were discovered. Within the 763 high-grade CIN cases with both TCT and HPV testing results, 232 were tested cytologically normal but only 30 were negative in HPV test. Besides, the rates of high-grade CIN observed in coinfection were all lower than the estimated rates generated from related single infection. HPV 52, 58 and 16 were found to be the most common types in Baoan, Shenzhen. The result also suggested that HPV coinfections should not increase risk for cervical cancers., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with cervical cancer while low-risk HPV strains mostly cause benign lesions. Multiple studies have also associated HPV with coronary artery (CAD) disease in women. Furthermore, the climacteric period in women, triggers chronic inflammation and has major implications for CAD and associated lipid disorders. The association of HPV with coronary artery disease in climacteric women has few studies, and the objective of this review is to gather and analyse scientific data on the subject. This is an integrative review performed on PubMed and Google Scholar using the keywords "HPV", "coronary heart disease" and "climacteric", among these keywords the boolean operator AND and the publication date filter. (2018 onwards). Five articles were found, whose main results show presence of high-risk vaginal HPV in climacteric women. Climacterium and HPV were associated with a three-fold increased risk of CAD, as well as with factors related to menopause that promote atheroma formation, lipid disorders and chronic inflammation. Thus, these results support the association between HPV infection and CAD in climacteric women, possibly via chronic inflammation, hormonal factors related to menopause and dyslipidemia., Competing Interests: Conflicts to interest: none to declare.

Background: Human Papillomavirus infection (HPV) is among the most common sexually transmitted infections with the highest incidence and prevalence worldwide. HPV has been established as the main cause of cervical cancer and remains a public health problem globally. In Western Oromia, Ethiopia cervical screening remains a major issue because of limited resources, and shortage of HPV testing technology. As a result, the prevalence of HPV and associated factors remain unknown among HIV-positive women. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of HPV and associated factors among women living with HIV attending Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) services in public health facilities of East Wollega and West Showa Zones, Ethiopia, 2022., Method: Using a cross-sectional study design, a total of 415 women ≥ 18 years old were enrolled using systematic random sampling from five public health facilities. Cervical specimens were collected by a trained nurse from April 01 2022, to May 30 , 2022, and tested at Nekemte Public Health Research and Referral Molecular Biology, a certified/accredited laboratory for HPV-DNA Polymerase Chain Reaction by expertise using Abbott m2000rt-PCR assays. Finally, Epi data version 4.6 was used for data entry and SPSS version 24.0 were used for data cleaning and analysis, and frequencies and prevalence of HPV were computed. Variables were identified using the multivariable model and statistically significant associations of variables were determined based on the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with its 95% CI and P-value < 0.05 to determine the strength of association., Result: The prevalence of HPV was 30.4% [95% CI: 26.0, 34.9]. Of HPV-infected women, 11.9% were positive for HPV-16, 9.5% for HPV-18, and 65.9% were positive for other hr-HPV . The odds of HPV infection among women aged beyond 48 years are 2.85 times the odds of HPV among people who were aged 18-27(AOR = 2.85, 95% CI: 1.16, 5.58). The odds of HPV infection among women who had three or more sexual partners is 4.12 times the odds of HPV infection among women with a single sexual partner(AOR = 4.12, 95% CI: 2.34-8.62). The odds of HPV infection among women who didn't use condom during sexual intercourse are 4.73 times the odds of HPV among women who used condom during sexual intercourse. (AOR = 4.73, 95% CI: 1.98-9.33). The odds of HPV infection among women who had history of is 4.52 times the odds of HPV infection among women with no history of abortion. [AOR = 4.52, 95% CI: 2.04, 6.89] The odds of HPV infection among women with history of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) 3.62 times the odds of HPV among women with no history of STI (AOR = 3.62, 95%CI: 1.75, 5.83). The odd of HPV among women with abnormal vaginal discharge is 3.31 times the odds of the disease among women with normal vaginal discharge [AOR = 3.31, 95% CI: 2.87,7.35)., Conclusion and Recommendation: The prevalence of HPV infection among HIV-infected women was high in the study area. Given the above-associated factors, we recommend that the stakeholders integrate HPV prevention strategies into HIV /AIDS services. Furthermore, the study has provided essential information about the HIV link with hr-HPV infections, which may explain the high prevalence among HIV-infected women. Introduction: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) cause considerable morbidity worldwide and, depending on the specific pathogen, may lead to serious complications in the female reproductive tract. Incarcerated women are particularly vulnerable to health problems with a disproportionate high rate of STIs, including infections with human papillomavirus (HPV)., Methods: Here, cervical swab samples collected from 299 women (18 to 64 years) living in one of the women's prisons of São Paulo, Brazil were submitted for liquid-based cytology to determine the prevalence of precancerous lesions. Furthermore, direct detection of 30 genital HPV genotypes (18 high-risk and 12 low-risk types) and 11 additional STIs ( Chlamydia trachomatis , Neisseria gonorrhoeae , Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2, Haemophilus ducreyi , Mycoplasma genitalium and hominis , Treponema pallidum , Trichomonas vaginalis , Ureaplasma parvum and urealyticum ) were performed by molecular typing using two PCR-based DNA microarray systems, i.e., EUROArray HPV and EUROArray STI (EUROIMMUN), respectively., Results: The overall prevalence of cytological abnormalities was 5.8%, including five women with low-grade and five women with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. The overall prevalence of HPV was 62.2, and 87.1% of the HPV-positive women were infected with oncogenic high-risk (HR) HPV types. HPV types 16 (24.1%), 33 and 52 (both 10.4%) were the most frequently detected. The prevalence of the other STIs was 72.8%. Up to four different pathogens were found in the infected women, the most frequent being Ureaplasma parvum (45.3%), Mycoplasma hominis (36.2%) and Trichomonas vaginalis (24.8%)., Conclusion: The high number of HR-HPV infections and other STIs described here highlights the fact that the Brazilian female prison population requires more attention in the country's health policies. The implementation of screening programs and treatment measures might contribute to a decrease in the incidence of STIs and cervical cancer in this vulnerable population. Human papillomavirus (HPV) proteins may elicit antibody responses in the process toward HPV-related malignancy. However, HPV seroepidemiology in noncervical HPV-related cancers remains poorly understood, particularly in populations with a high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Using a glutathione S-transferase-based multiplex serology assay, antibodies against E6, E7 and L1 proteins of HPV16 and HPV18 were measured in sera of 535 cases of noncervical HPV-related cancers (anal (n = 104), vulval (n = 211), vaginal (n = 49), penile (n = 37) and oropharyngeal (n = 134)) and 6651 non-infection-related cancer controls, from the Johannesburg Cancer Study that recruited Black South African with newly diagnosed cancer between 1995 and 2016. Logistic and Poisson regression models were used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and prevalence ratios (aPR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) in cases versus controls. HPV16 E6 was more strongly associated with noncervical HPV-related cancers than HPV16 L1 or E7, or HPV18 proteins: anal (females (HPV16 E6 aOR = 11.50;95%CI:6.0-22.2), males (aOR = 10.12;95%CI:4.9-20.8), vulval (aOR = 11.69;95%CI:7.9-17.2), vaginal (aOR = 10.26;95%CI:5.0-21), penile (aOR = 18.95;95%CI:8.9-40), and oropharyngeal (females (aOR = 8.95;95%CI:2.9-27.5), males (aOR = 3.49;95%CI:1.8-7.0)) cancers. HPV16-E6 seropositivity ranged from 24.0% to 35.1% in anal, vulval, vaginal and penile cancer but was significantly lower (11.2%) in oropharyngeal cancer. After adjustment for HIV, prevalence of which increased from 22.2% in 1995-2005 to 54.1% in 2010-2016, HPV16 E6 seropositivity increased by period of diagnosis (aPR for 2010-2016 vs. 1995-2006 = 1.84;95%CI:1.1-3.0). Assuming HPV16 E6 seroprevalence reflects HPV attributable fraction, the proportion of certain noncervical-HPV-related cancers caused by HPV is increasing over time in South Africa. Background: Recent studies have established a correlation between folate levels and the incidence of cervical cancer. Given that Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a primary etiological factor in the development of cervical cancer, the nature of the relationship between dietary folate intake and HPV infection remains an area of ongoing investigation., Methods: To investigate the association between dietary folate intake and HPV infection, this study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning from 2005 to 2016. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to examine the potential associations. Furthermore, the use of restricted cubic splines (RCS) facilitated the exploration of any non-linear correlations. Additionally, subgroup analyses were used to explore this correlation in different populations., Results: The study encompassed a total of 6747 women aged between 18 and 59 years. For every one mcg increase in folate intake, the incidence of HPV infection is reduced by 1% (OR = 0.99, p<0.05). Besides, folate intake was categorized into quartiles as follows: Q1 (<211 mcg/day), Q2 (211-311 mcg/day), Q3 (311-448 mcg/day), and Q4 (>448 mcg/day). The adjusted odds ratios (OR) for the different folate levels were as follows: Q2: 0.94 (95% CI: 0.76-1.16), Q3: 0.84 (95% CI: 0.67-1.04), and Q4: 0.63 (95% CI: 0.49-0.81). The RCS analysis confirmed a nonlinear relationship between dietary folate intake and HPV infection risk. Notably, a significant inverse association was observed when dietary folate intake exceeded 193.847 mcg/day., Conclusions: In conclusion, the findings of this study indicate a negative association between dietary folate intake and the risk of HPV infection. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of almost all cases of cervical cancer, a disease that kills some 340,000 women per year. The timeline from initial infection with HPV to the onset of invasive cervical cancer spans decades, and observational studies of this process are limited to settings in which treatment of precancerous lesions was withheld or inadequate. Such studies have been critical for understanding the natural history of HPV. Modeling can shed additional insight on the natural history of HPV, especially across geographical settings with varying prevalence of factors known to affect the host-side immune response to HPV, such as HIV and tobacco use. In this study, we create models for the 30 most populous countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, each with country-specific demographic, and behavioral inputs. We found that it was not possible to fit the data if we assumed that the natural history parameters were exactly identical for all countries, even after accounting for demographic and behavioral differences, but that we could achieve a good fit with the addition of a single immunocompetence parameter for each country. Our results indicate that variation in host immune responses may play a role in explaining the differences in the burden of cervical cancer between countries, which in turn implies a greater need for more geographically diverse data collection to understand the natural history of HPV., (© 2024. Background: HPV is considered the most common sexually transmitted infection. It is responsible of 70% of cervical cancers worldwide. HIV infection is associated with increased rates of HPV infection. Women Living With HIV (WLWH) are 6 times at greater risk of developing cervical cancer. The current study aimed to estimate prevalence and identify genotypes of HPV infection among WLWH in Egypt compared to women with negative HIV status and determine associated risk factors., Methods: The study conducted among 251 WLWH and 268 women with negative HIV status enrolled from gynecological clinics in primary health care centers from nine Egyptian governorates. Data was collected from participants using a structured interview questionnaire and cervical samples were collected for HPV DNA detection and genotyping., Results: The overall prevalence of HPV infection was 13.5%, 3.4% among women with HIV negative status and 24.4% among WLWH. HR-HPVs other than genotype 16 and 18 were isolated from 71% of infected women. Woman's age, age at first marriage, number of lifetime marriages and drug addiction are significant predictors for HPV infection (odds 0.96, 0.91, 2.06, 2.01 respectively)., Conclusion: HPV infection is more prevalent among WLWH. Infection with HR-HPV other than genotype 16 and 18 was the most prevalent among infected women in both groups. Young age, early life sexual activity, having more than one sexual partner during the life time, and drug addiction are independent predictors for HPV infection. Introduction: Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is the causal agent of several cancers including cervical, anal and oropharyngeal cancer. Transgender men and transmasculine non-binary (TMNB) people with a cervix are much less likely to undergo cervical cancer screening than cisgender women. Transgender women and transfeminine non-binary (TWNB) people assigned male at birth may be at increased risk of HPV. Both TMNB and TWNB people face many barriers to HPV testing including medical mistrust due to stigma and discrimination., Methods and Analysis: The Self-TI Study (Self-TI) is a pilot study designed to measure acceptability and feasibility of HPV self-testing among transgender and non-binary people in England. TMNB people aged 25-65 years, with at least 1 year of testosterone, and TWNB people, aged 18 years and over, are eligible to participate. Participants self-collect up to four samples: an oral rinse, a first void urine sample, a vaginal swab (if applicable) and an anal swab. TMNB participants are asked to have an additional clinician-collected cervical swab taken following their routine Cervical Screening Programme sample. TWNB people are asked to take a self-collection kit to perform additional self-collection at home and mail the samples back to the clinic. Acceptability is assessed by a self-administered online survey and feasibility is measured as the proportion of samples returned in the clinic and from home., Ethics and Dissemination: Self-TI received ethical approval from the Research Ethics Committee of Wales 4 and ethical review panel within the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the US National Cancer Institute. Self-TI was coproduced by members of the transgender and non-binary community, who served as authors, collaborators and members of the patient and public involvement (PPI) group. Background: Ameloblastoma is a benign but aggressive epithelial odontogenic neoplasm of unknown etiology. The role of human papilloma virus (HPV) in the etiology of oral squamous cell carcinoma has prompted the investigation of HPV as an etiologic factor in ameloblastoma. This study aimed to determine the frequency of high-risk (HR) HPV in conventional ameloblastoma and the clinical parameters associated with infection., Materials and Methods: The study was approved by the ethical review boards of the institution. DNA was extracted from fresh tissue collected 750 μL of DNA/RNA Shield (Zymo Research, United States) using Invitrogen PureLink Viral RNA/DNA Mini Kit (Invitrogen, USA). The extracted DNA was assayed for the detection of 14 HR HPV types (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, and 68) using Anyplex™ II HPV HR Detection kit (Cat. No. HP7E00X) (Seegene Inc., Republic of Korea) on CFX-96TM Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) System (Bio-Rad). Data on gender, age of patient, site of lesion, clinicohistological types of ameloblastoma and history of smoking, alcohol consumption, and practice of oral sex were collected. Data analysis was performed using analysis program SPSS version 25 and statistical significance was set at P < 0.05., Results: Two cases of conventional ameloblastoma were positive with HPV and none of the ameloblastic carcinoma cases were positive. The HPV 16 serotype was observed in both cases. While 5 of the cases had a history of alcohol consumption, none of these cases were positive for HPV serotype., Conclusions: HPV 16 positivity was detected in two cases of conventional ameloblastomas and none in ameloblastic carcinoma using real-time PCR. There was no effect of exposure to smoking, alcohol consumption, and practice of oral sex and HPV in the etiology of ameloblastoma. Background: Papilloma DNA viruses are one of the viruses that cause skin lesions in ruminants., Objectives: The clinical, histopathological and molecular characteristics of cutaneous papilloma in ruminants in Iran are to be investigated in this study., Methods: Samples were collected from 19 small ruminants (5 sheep and 14 goats) with various papillomatosis lesions. The samples taken were studied with histopathological and molecular techniques., Results: In clinical terms, the lesions appeared in different sizes, ranging from 0.5 to 11 cm, and the cauliflower exophytic masses appeared in other parts of the animal's body. In the limbs, most papilloma lesions have been seen (42.1%). In histopathological examination, perinuclear vacuolation epidermal granule layer with various degrees of hypergranulosis, hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, orthokeratosis and parakeratosis were seen. Moreover, all the suspected samples were positive for papillomavirus using the polymerase chain reaction technique., Conclusions: Although the prevalence of papillomaviruses in Iranian sheep and goats is low, it seems necessary to distinguish them from other viral skin diseases, such as cutaneous contagious ecthyma, using molecular techniques and histopathology., (© 2024 The Author(s). Periodontitis is a cumulative inflammatory disease associated with multiple health conditions and various systemic diseases. As a common disease, virus infection along with its consequences has become a serious health burden. The study aims to evaluate the relationship between common viruses including hepatitis virus, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), human papillomavirus (HPV), and periodontitis. The data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2014 was adopted and screened through, including 10 714 participants. Generalized linear regression was conducted to verify the relationships between the virus infections and periodontitis. Moreover, we also performed analyses in age and gender subgroups. The results suggested that the infection of HCV, HSV-1, and HSV-2 was significantly associated with the prevalence of periodontitis (odds ratio [OR] 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-1.70; OR 1.09, 95% CI 1.05-1.13; OR 1.06, 95% CI 1.01 - 1.11, respectively) and risk of developing moderate or severe periodontitis (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.29-1.77; OR 1.08, 95% CI 1.04-1.12; OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01-1.10, respectively) after adjusting all relevant co-factors. Subgroup analyses revealed a steady association between periodontitis and hepatitis C virus (HCV) or HSV-1 infection, while the relationship between HSV-2 and HPV infection can also be found in some subgroups. The presence of HCV and HSV infection was found to be significantly associated with the prevalence of periodontitis, including moderate or severe cases. We estimated the population-level incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal, cervical, and anal cancers by smoking status. We combined HPV DNA genotyping data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Cancer Registry Sentinel Surveillance System with data from the Kentucky Cancer Registry and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System across smoking status. During 2004-2005 and 2014-2015 in Kentucky, most cases of oropharyngeal (63.3%), anal (59.7%), and cervical (54.9%) cancer were among individuals who ever smoked. The population-level incidence rate was higher among individuals who ever smoked than among those who never smoked for HPV-positive oropharyngeal (7.8 vs 2.1; adjusted incidence rate ratio = 2.6), cervical (13.7 vs 6.8; adjusted incidence rate ratio = 2.0), and anal (3.9 vs 1.6; adjusted incidence rate ratio = 2.5) cancers. These findings indicate that smoking is associated with increased risk of HPV-positive oropharyngeal, cervical, and anal cancers, and the population-level burden of these cancers is higher among individuals who ever smoked., (Published by Oxford University Press 2024.)

Objectives: The incidence of cervical cancer among patients with postcoital bleeding (PCB) was the primary objective of this study. Furthermore, the proportion of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia requiring treatment and the correlation between PCB and the presence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) was determined. Lastly, the study aimed to identify risk factors among the referred women., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a university hospital in Denmark between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019. Women referred with PCB were identified with the ICD diagnosis codes "DN930 Postcoital and contact bleeding" and "DN930B Contact bleeding." Demographic and paraclinical data were extracted from the journals and the supportive systems: Patoweb and the Danish Microbiology Database., Results: A total of 789 women were included in this study, with only 0.25% ( n = 2) diagnosed with cervical cancer and 2.5% ( n = 20) diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia II-III and adenocarcinoma in situ. Human papillomavirus testing was only conducted in a minority of cases, and a low incidence of high-risk human papilloma virus was detected in the 22 cases, n = 5., Conclusions: A very low incidence of cervical cancer and high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia reported among women referred with PCB. Prognostic factors as body mass index, smoking, and HPV vaccination status may predict the risk of cervical cancer. High-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) is the cause of virtually all cervical cancers, most vaginal and anal cancers, and some vulvar cancer cases. With HPV testing becoming the primary screening method for cervical cancer, understanding the link between cervical hrHPV infection and the risk of other anogenital cancers is crucial. We assessed the risk of vulvar, vaginal and anal cancer and precancer (VIN2+, VaIN2+ and AIN2+) in a prospective cohort study including 455,349 women who underwent cervical hrHPV testing in Denmark from 2005 to 2020. We employed Cox proportional hazard models, adjusting for age, calendar year and HPV vaccination status, and estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). We used the Aalen Johansen estimator to calculate the absolute risks of VIN2+, VaIN2+ and AIN2+. In total, 15% of the women were hrHPV positive at baseline. A positive cervical hrHPV test was associated with increased incidence of vulvar, vaginal and anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Five-year risk estimates of VIN2+, VaIN2+ and AIN2+ among hrHPV-positive women (0.45%, 0.14% and 0.12%) were higher than among hrHPV-negative women (0.14%, 0.01% and 0.05%). Particularly high risk was observed among the hrHPV-positive women of the oldest age, with a history of anogenital precancer and those not HPV vaccinated. In conclusion, our study confirms the association between cervical hrHPV infection and non-cervical anogenital precancers and cancers. Currently, no established risk threshold or guidelines for follow-up. Objectives: Human papillomavirus (HPV) has emerged as a potential etiological factor in sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC), but a clear understanding of HPV prevalence and its temporal patterns in SNSCC remains elusive. This study aimed to investigate temporal trends in HPV testing and positivity rates, and explore demographic and geographic factors associated with these trends., Methods: A retrospective cohort study included patients diagnosed with invasive SNSCC between 2011 and 2017 from the US National Cancer Database (NCDB). Prevalence ratios (PR) of HPV positivity and testing rates were estimated with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI)., Results: The overall HPV testing rate was 45.4 % (N = 1762/3880), and the prevalence of HPV testing significantly decreased during the study period (adjusted PR: 0.97, 95 % CI: 0.95 - 0.99, p < 0.001). Overall HPV positivity frequency was 37.3 % (N = 650/1741), and the overall prevalence of HPV positive tumors significantly increased during the study period (adjusted PR: 1.04, 95 % CI: 1.02 - 1.05, p < 0.001). The increase in HPV positivity rate was observed solely in the white population (unadjusted PR: 1.10, 95 % CI: 1.06 - 1.14; p < 0.001). A significant geographical variation was observed for both HPV testing (range: 28.6 % - 61.7 %) and positivity (range: 28.3 % - 44.7 %)., Conclusions: This study provides novel insights into the temporal trends and demographic factors associated with HPV testing and positivity in SNSCC. Background: The aim was to evaluate the frequency, clinicopathological features, and HPV status of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OP-SCC) and benign HPV-related epithelial lesions of the oropharynx over the last 25 years. Moreover, a literature review was performed to investigate HPV frequency in OP-SCC samples diagnosed in Brazilian Centers., Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study analyzed OP-SCC, squamous papilloma, verruca vulgaris, and condyloma accuminatum, diagnosed from 1997 to 2021. HPV status of OP-SCC was determined by immunohistochemistry and "in situ" hybridization. Bivariate statistics were performed (p≤0.05). For the literature review, MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Scopus were searched. Two independent reviewers assessed the studies for eligibility., Results: Cross-sectional: 211 OP-SCC (63.0%) and 124 benign lesions (37.0%) were included. OP-SCC frequency increased gradually over time, whereas benign lesions had steady trends. OP-SCC affected more males (n= 171; 81.0%), though the relative frequency in females rose over time. Smoking (n= 127; 60.2%) was common in OP-SCC. Nineteen OP-SCC (13.0%) were positive for HPV. HPV-positive and HPV-negative tumors had similar clinicopathological features (p>0.05). Benign lesions predominated in middle-aged (n= 32; 26.7%) women (n= 71; 57.3%), in the soft palate (n=101; 81.5%)., Literature Review: 32 studies were included, and in 60% of them, HPV frequency in OP-SCC was less than 25%., Conclusions: OP-SCC prevalence has been increasing, and it was mostly associated with smoking and alcohol rather than with HPV infection in Brazil. Benign lesions had a stationary frequency over the evaluated period.

Abstract: We investigated factors associated with "worse than usual" anal health among gay and bisexual men aged ≥35 years recruited to a longitudinal study of anal human papillomavirus infection/lesions from September 2010 to August 2015.Among 616 participants (median age 49 years; 36% HIV-positive), 42 (6.8%) reported worse than usual anal health in the last 4 weeks. Associated factors included spending less time with gay friends (odds ratio [OR] = 2.25, 95% CI = 1.06-4.77), most time "feeling down"(OR = 9.17, 95% CI = 2.94-28.59), reduced libido (OR = 2.90, 95% CI = 1.52-5.52), current anal symptoms (OR = 6.55, 95% CI = 2.54-16.90), recent anal wart diagnosis (OR = 4.33, 95% CI = 1.98-9.49), and fear of developing anal cancer (OR = 9.34, 95% CI = 4.52-19.28).Concerns regarding anal health should be routinely discussed by clinicians, and potentially associated psychosocial, physical, and sexual issues further explored., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest statement: AEG has received honoraria and research funding from CSL Biotherapies and honoraria and travel funding from Merck and sits on the Australian advisory board for the Gardasil HPV vaccine. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the national human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program of South Korea among its entire female population, particularly among younger age groups., Materials and Methods: We first predicted the incidence of cervical cancer over the next 20 years (2021-2040) using the Nordpred package based on Møller's age-period-cohort model under several scenarios for the national HPV vaccination program. We calculated the potential impact fractions and proportional differences under the current national vaccination programs, and alternative scenarios using the no-vaccination assumption as a reference., Results: We estimated that the current national vaccination program would prevent 4.13% of cervical cancer cases and reduce the age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) by 8.79% in the overall population by 2036-2040. Under the alternative scenario of implementing the nine-valent vaccine, 5.13% of cervical cancer cases could be prevented and the ASR reduced by 10.93% during the same period. In another scenario, expanding the vaccination age to 9-17 years could prevent 10.19% of cervical cancer cases, with the ASR reduced by 18.57% during the same period. When restricted to ages < 40 years, the prevention effect was remarkably greater. We predict that the current national HPV program will reduce its incidence by more than 30% between 2036 and 2040 in women aged < 40 years., Conclusion: The effectiveness of the vaccination program in reducing the incidence of cervical cancer was confirmed, with a considerable impact anticipated in younger age groups.

Background: Solid organ transplantation is a risk predictor for virally-mediated anal squamous intraepithelial lesions and cancer (anal disease). Precancerous squamous intraepithelial lesions can be detected by screening, and treatment may prevent cancer progression. Screening recommendations are not well defined. We aim to define prevalence and describe risk predictors for anal disease in a large population of solid organ transplant recipients., Methods: Retrospective single-center cohort analysis included solid organ transplant recipients cared for between 2001 and 2022 (N = 15 362). The cohort of recipients who developed anal disease was compared with those who did not. Greedy propensity score matching was performed for organ-specific recipients, and time-to-event analysis for the development of anal disease was performed in those with genitourinary human papilloma virus (HPV) disease versus those without., Results: Prevalence of anal disease was 0.6% (cancer 0.2%). The average years from transplant to the diagnosis of anal disease was 11.67. Anal disease was more common in women (68.5% versus 31.5%, P  < 0.001), patients who had other HPV-related genitourinary diseases (40.4% versus 0.6%, P  < 0.001), who were of younger age at transplant (39.62 versus 46.58, P  < 0.001), and had increased years from transplant (17.06 versus 12.57, P  < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, the odds of anal disease increased by 4% each year posttransplant. History of genitourinary HPV disease (odds ratio 69.63) and female sex (odds ratio 1.96) were the most significant risk predictors for anal disease., Conclusions: The prevalence of anal cancer among solid organ transplant recipients was equal to the general population (0.2%). Due to the low prevalence of overall disease, these data suggest that anal screenings in transplant recipients should be targeted to higher-risk subsets: female recipients farther out from transplant and patients with genitourinary HPV-related diseases., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc.
