In both groups, the following assessments were performed: The Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Borg rating of perceived exertion scale (the Borg RPE scale) ABB.Results: It was demonstrated that patients with moderate asthma covered more distance during the 6MWT than patients diagnosed with severe asthma. The difference in metres covered between the two groups was statistically significant (p < 0.001), which could be observed during the walk test. The results indicate that a larger proportion of patients with asthma (76%) fall into the insufficient physical activity category compared to those without asthma (24%). Conversely, a higher percentage of non-asthmatic individuals (66.67%) report sufficient physical activity compared to asthmatic patients (33.33%)(P=0.005).Conclusion: This study demonstrated that asthma severity significantly impacts exercise capacity, as shown by shorter distances covered in the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) among patients with severe asthma. While overall physical activity levels (measured by the IPAQ) were not significantly different between asthma and non-asthma groups, asthma patients exhibited significantly more sitting time, suggesting a more sedentary lifestyle.Keywords: asthma, 6MWT, IPAQ

The transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle contributes to the stability of the spine. The aim was to assess both the postural stability and the activity of the TrA muscle in overweight post-stroke patients.Methods: A group of 56 participants (61.12 ± 11.5 years) was divided into the study group (n=28 post-stroke patients, 63.7 ± 10.9 years) and control group (n= 23 healthy participants (58.5 ± 12.2 years). The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) were used to evaluate postural stability and risk of falls. The Pressure Bio-Feedback Stabilizer (PBFS) device was used to assess functional stability.Results: Stroke had a significantly negative effect on the BBS (p < 0.001) and TUG (p = 0.001). The older age negatively affected the BBS (p = 0.001), TUG (p = 0.017), and the TrA muscle activity (p = 0.017). Higher values of body mass index (BMI) negatively affected the BBS (p = 0.028), however there were no changes of TUG results (p = 0.141), and the TrA muscle activity (p = 0.808). Also, BBS and TUG results were not associated with TrA muscle activity (p = 0.541 and p = 0.411, respectively). The results of the BBS, TUG, and PBFS did not differ according to gender (p < 0.05). Time from stroke negatively affected the TUG (p = 0.001), but had no effect on the TrA muscle activity (p < 0.05). The side of hemiparesis did not affect the postural stability (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The consequences of a stroke have an essential negative effect on postural stability. Factors such as age, gender, time from stroke, and the side of the hemiparesis have not negatively affected postural stability in overweight post-stroke patients.Keywords: post-stroke hemiparesis, postural control, postural stability, muscle activity, transversus abdominis muscle, risk of falls, body mass index

The main aim of the study was to assess the relationship between the sEMG RMS value of rectus and external oblique muscles of the abdomen and the composition of the body, which was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis.Patients and methods: The target group was made up of healthy people aged 20-30-year-old. The study visit protocol of the participants was as follows: a medical history, instructions on the purpose of measurements and examination procedures, obtaining consent for participation in the research, an analysis of the body weight composition by the electrical bioimpedance method, a fat tissue thickness measurement using body fat calipers, preparation of the subject for sEMG measurements (sEMG RMS value of rectus and external oblique abdominal muscles).Results: Twenty-nine people were qualified for the study according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. sEMG amplitudes decreased when the person had a higher fat content and had less water in the body. These results were related to the rectus abdominal muscle (mainly its upper part) during the active contraction of this muscle. In addition, it was observed that when actively bent their torsos forward people with a higher BMI and with a greater thickness of fat tissue had a lower sEMG RMS value of the rectus abdominal muscle.Conclusion: In order to conduct reliable examinations using sEMG, parameters concerning the amount of fat tissue, the thickness of fat tissue, BMI and amount of water in the body should be taken into account.Keywords: surface electromyography, body mass index, bioelectrical impedance, abdominal fat, skinfold thickness

However, the scientific literature shows mainly the theoretical information about their mutual connections. The lack of information about these relations from a practical aspect coupled with the paucity of scientific papers on the impact of posture changes on the pelvic floor led the authors to conduct this study. The primary aim of this study was to compare the resting and functional bioelectrical activities of pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) depending on three different positions of the lower limbs (positions A, B, and C) in the supine position.Materials and methods: This was a prospective observational study evaluating resting and functional activities of the PFM depending on the position of the lower limbs. The study was carried out at the Department and Clinic of Urology, University Hospital in Wroclaw, Poland and the target group were women in the menopausal period. Bioelectrical activity of PFM was recorded using a surface electromyographic instrument in the supine position. Results of the values obtained in A, B, and C positions were compared using a one-way analysis of variance.Results: In position A, the average resting surface electromyography (sEMG) activity of PFM was 6.9±2.6 µV; in position B, the result was 6.9±2.5 µV and in position C, the resting sEMG activity was 5.7±1.8 µV (P=0.0102). The results of the functional bioelectrical activity of PFM were as follows: position A – 20.3±11.8 µV, position B – 19.9±10.6 µV, and position C – 25.3±10.9 µV (P=0.0104).Conclusion: The results showed that in the supine position, the PFM achieved the lowest resting activity and the highest functional activity. Synergistic muscle activation intensifies a woman’s ability to contract the PFM. In some cases, even for continent women, it is not possible to fully contract their PFM without involving the synergistic muscles. The primary aim of this study was to assess the surface electromyographic activity of synergistic muscles to PFM (SPFM) during resting and functional PFM activation in postmenopausal women with and without SUI.Materials and methods: This study was a preliminary, prospective, cross-sectional observational study and included volunteers and patients who visited the Department and Clinic of Urology, University Hospital in Wroclaw, Poland. Forty-two patients participated in the study and were screened for eligibility criteria. Thirty participants satisfied the criteria and were categorized into two groups: women with SUI (n=16) and continent women (n=14). The bioelectrical activity of PFM and SPFM (AM, RA, GM) was recorded with a surface electromyographic instrument in a standing position during resting and functional PFM activity.Results: Bioelectrical activity of RA was significantly higher in the incontinent group than in the continent group. These results concern the RA activity during resting and functional PFM activity. The results for other muscles showed no significant difference in bioelectrical activity between groups.Conclusion: In women with SUI, during the isolated activation of PFM, an increased synergistic activity of RA muscle was observed; however, this activity was not observed in asymptomatic women. This may indicate the important accessory contribution of these muscles in the mechanism of continence. Introduction: Lower limb oedema is a significant problem in vascular diseases. Due to the localization, it greatly hampers normal mobility affecting quality of life. Purpose: To evaluate the frequency of lower limb swelling in the course of vascular diseases and related complaints. Materials and methods: 30 patients (16 men; aged 26-87 (mean 59)) admitted to Wroclaw University Hospital; suffering from idiopathic lymphatic insufficiency, chronic venous insufficiency-related swelling and swelling caused by atheromatosis and thrombosis Results: 8 patients (27%) had lymphoedema, of whom 5 were diagnosed with swelling after giving birth and 3 were hospitalized not knowing the reason of the lymphatic system dysfunction. 9 patients (30%) had swelling in arteriosclerosis and venous failure, and only 4 patients (13%) were treated because of deep vein thrombosis. Conclusions: General health serves as the main indicator of correlation between loss of mobility and mean swelling size. There was no statistically significant correlation between general health and gender. Cutaneous pain (22% respondents) was the main complaint followed by limb deformity (15%) and lack of knowledge (18%). Declared physical activity among study population was high. Background: Injury of the spinal cord causes motor and sensory dysfunction as well as pathological reflexes, leading to paraplegia or tetraplegia. The sequelae of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) are a significant burden and impact on healthcare systems. Despite constant progress in medicine, traumatic SCI still remains irreversible. To date, no satisfying treatment that can enable neuronal regeneration and recovery of function at the damaged level has been found. Hundreds of experiments have been conducted on various possibilities of influencing spinal regeneration; some of them have yielded promising results, but unfortunately, the successes obtained in experimental animals have not translated into humans., Methods: This narrative review article presents the application of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (eSWT) in patients with SCI. The article has been divided into parts: 1) use of extracorporeal shock wave therapy for regeneration of the spinal cord after traumatic spinal cord injury; 2) application of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in spasticity after spinal cord injury. In both cases, the hypotheses of possible mechanisms of action will be described., Results and Conclusions: A small number of clinical trials have demonstrated the potential of eSWT to influence the regeneration of the spine, as an innovative, safe, and cost-effective treatment option for patients with SCI. Some reports have shown that eSWT can improve spasticity, walking ability, urological function, quality of life, and independence in daily life.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the main causes of morbidity and disability worldwide. Due to modern methods of diagnosis and treatment, it is possible to protect patients with acute coronary syndromes from myocardial infarction as well from its early complications. However, the challenge remains to improve the long-term prognosis of CVDs. Analysis of body composition using the bioelectrical impedance (BIA) appears to be a good method for assessing changes in patients' organisms following various cardiac incidents, as well as those participating in rehabilitation programmes. This study aims to provide a complementary analysis of the scientific literature and a critical review of the data from the use of BIA to assess phase angle in people with a history of cardiac diseases. This critical literature review was prepared based on the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles recommendations. Inclusion criteria included 1) original publications of a research nature, 2) papers indexed in PubMed, Scopus, Embase databases, 3) full-text articles in English, 4) recent papers published between 2013-2023, 5) papers on the use of BIA with phase angle assessment as a prognostic factor in multiple aspects of health and disease, 6) papers showing changes in body composition in the process of cardiac rehabilitation. Based on a review of PubMed, Scopus and Embase databases, 36, 31 and 114 publications were found, respectively, chosen on the basis of precisely selected keywords and included for further full-text analysis. Exploring the role of the BIA holds lots of hope as a non-invasive method that can be used as a predictive marker for changes in the state of health in various fields of medicine. In young, healthy adults, BIA parameters may be important in identifying risk factors for the development of particular diseases, in predicting the rapid development of disease symptoms and in promoting motivation to lifestyle changes. BACKGROUND Cold and heat therapies for recovery in sports are commonly used, including in the mixed martial arts (MMA). The Game Ready (GR) device can be used for local monotherapy with either heat or cold and for contrast therapy. This study aimed to compare the effects of duration of cold and heat compression on biomechanical changes in the forearm muscles of 20 healthy mixed martial arts athletes. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty MMA volunteers (26.5±4.5 years old) underwent 3 different phases of the GR: (1) stimulation time 10 min (eGR-10, GR experimental group), (2) 10 min (cGR-10, sham control group) and (3) 20 min (eGR-20, GR experimental group). The following outcomes were assessed: muscle tone (T), stiffness (S), flexibility (E), pressure pain threshold (PPT), microvascular response (PU), and maximum isometric strength (Fmax). All measurements were performed before GR (rest) and after GR stimulation (post). RESULTS Both eGR-10 and eGR-20 significantly improved outcomes T (p<0.001), S (p<0.001), E (p=0.001, and p<0.001, respectively), PPT (p<0.001), PU (p<0.001), and Fmax (p<0.001). Notably, eGR-20 exhibited superior improvements in PU, Fmax, and PPT, with larger effect sizes (p<0.001). While eGR-10 demonstrated more pronounced reductions in T and S (p<0.001), these results underscore the potential for tailored GR therapy durations to optimize specific recovery goals for MMA athletes. CONCLUSIONS GR stimulation affects muscle biomechanical changes, pain threshold, muscle strength, and tissue perfusion. The study results suggest that 10 min of GR stimulation is sufficient to achieve changes that can be used to optimize recovery for MMA athletes.

Background: Ischaemic heart disease, including myocardial infarction, is one of the main causes leading to heart failure as a consequence of ischaemic myocardial damage. In recent years, survival in the acute phase of myocardial infarction has improved significantly, but the high mortality rate within 12 months of hospital discharge (reaching up to 9.8% in Poland) remains a challenge. Therefore, the KOS-Zawał (MC-AMI) comprehensive 12-month post-MI care programme was introduced in Poland in 2017. Aim: This study aimed to assess body composition (including, but not limited to, the phase angle, visceral fat, total body fat, redistribution between intracellular and extracellular fluid in the body, and metabolic age) using a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in post-MI patients before and after early post-MI rehabilitation who were participating in the KOS-Zawał (MC-AMI) programme. Methods: This study involved an examination (before rehabilitation) of 94 post-myocardial infarction patients who were referred to a cardiology appointment within 7-10 days of hospital discharge, during which a clinical assessment, electrocardiogram, and biochemical blood tests (complete blood count, CRP, and serum creatinine) were performed. For various reasons (death, qualification for device implantation, non-completion of rehabilitation, failure to attend a follow-up BIA), data from 55 patients who were examined twice (before and after rehabilitation) were used for the final analysis. Measurements were taken using a high-grade Tanita MC-780 BIA body composition analyser, which measured the resistance of tissues to a low-intensity electrical impulse (not perceptible to the subject). Results: Participation in rehabilitation as part of the KOS-Zawał (MC-AMI) programme was associated with a decrease in metabolic age in patients, with a reduction in visceral fat levels and levels of adipose tissue in the lower and upper limbs. Moreover, a clinically beneficial reduction in the ratio of extracellular water to total body water was also observed. These changes were statistically significant ( p < 0.005). In contrast, there were no statistically significant differences in the change in phase angle values in the subjects before and after the 5-week post-infarction rehabilitation. Conclusions: Participation in early post-myocardial infarction rehabilitation as part of the KOS-Zawał (MC-AMI) programme (25 training sessions) is associated with significant improvements in body composition parameters, such as visceral adipose tissue, limb fat, and water redistribution, and, consequently, a reduction in metabolic age, despite no significant increase in phase angle values. It was hypothesised that the good baseline condition of the subjects might explain the lack of significant change in the phase angle over the short observation period. For further analysis, it would be worthwhile to increase the number of patients with baseline reduced phase angle values and monitor changes in this parameter throughout rehabilitation and the entire MC-AMI programme, because changes in the phase angle may also be influenced by other programme components such as dietary or psychological education. It is worth considering implementing a regular BIA assessment in patients in the programme as a motivating stimulus for diligent exercise and extending rehabilitation to be followed by telerehabilitation or hybrid telerehabilitation.

BACKGROUND Neck pain is a prevalent and burdensome health issue, with autologous conditioned serum (ACS), like Orthokine, being a recognized treatment for musculoskeletal conditions due to its anti-inflammatory effects. However, the optimal ACS administration method for neck pain remains unclear. The existing literature lacks robust evidence, especially for different injection techniques. This study aimed to compare ACS infiltration into cervical fascia with periarticular administration to determine if the former is as effective in alleviating neck pain, offering a novel approach to its management. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our study is designed to be a single-center, prospective, randomized trial involving 100 patients. Group A (n=50) will receive ACS through fascial infiltration at tender points under ultrasound guidance, with 4 doses administered every 3 days. Group B (n=50) will receive ACS injections in the articular column (facet joints) using the same dosing schedule. We will collect data at T0 (before therapy), T1 (6 weeks after therapy), and T2 (12 weeks after therapy), assessing outcomes with the Numerical Pain Scale (NRS), Neck Disability Index (NDI), and Dynamic Proprioception Test (DPT). RESULTS Enrollment begins in August 2023, and the study is set to conclude in July 2024. If data analysis, manuscript preparation, and peer review proceed smoothly, we anticipate publishing the results in late 2024 or early 2025. CONCLUSIONS If fascial infiltration with ACS proves equally effective as the standard periarticular method, it offers promise for patients on long-term anticoagulant treatment. Paravertebral injections in such cases carry a significant risk of bleeding, making ACS infiltration a potentially safer alternative for managing neck pain in these individuals.

The preschool period is characterised by the improvement in motor skills. One of the developmental tasks in children is the ability to jump. Jumping plays an important role in the development of leg strength and balance. It is the gateway to more complex movements. In the physiotherapy clinic, we see a lot of difficulties in jumping performance in 5-7-year-old children. The aim of this study is to present the jumping ability, assessed by the Motor Proficiency Test (MOT) and the G-sensor examination of the vertical countermovement jump (CMJ) and countermovement jump with arms thrust (CMJAT) parameters. A total of 47 children (14 boys and 33 girls) were randomly recruited. The mean age was 5.5 years. The mean height was 113 cm and the mean weight was 19.7 kg. The children were divided into two groups according to their results. Children with low basic motor skills have the greatest difficulty with jumping tasks. In the CMJ jump, the take-off force was lower than in the CMJAT ( p = 0.04). Most CMJAT parameters correlate with age, weight, and height. Height correlates most with children's jumping performance. This study may be useful for sport educators and developmental researchers. The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus infection is over 621 million. Post-COVID-19 syndrome, also known as long COVID or long-haul COVID, refers to a persistent condition where individuals experience symptoms and health issues after the acute phase of COVID-19. The aim of this study was to assess the strength and fatigue of skeletal muscles in people recovered from COVID-19. A total of 94 individuals took part in this cross-sectional study, with 45 participants (referred to as the Post-COVID Cohort, PCC) and 49 healthy age-matched volunteers (Healthy Control Cohort, HCC). This research article uses the direct dynamometry method to provide a detailed analysis of post-COVID survivors' strength and power characteristics. The Biodex System 4 Pro was utilized to evaluate muscle strength characteristics during the fatigue test. The fatigue work in extensors and flexors was significantly higher in the PCC. The PCC also showed significantly less power in both extensors and flexors compared to the HCC. In conclusion, this study provides compelling evidence of the impact of post-COVID-19 fatigue on muscle performance, highlighting the importance of considering these effects in the rehabilitation and care of individuals recovering from the virus. PCC achieved lower muscle strength values than HCC.

Aims: To investigate the effects of one-time soft tissue therapy (STT) on pelvic floor muscle (PFM) electromyographic signals in women with stress and/or mixed urinary incontinence., Methods: An intervention study conducted with 63 women with stress and/or mixed urinary incontinence. Participants were randomly assigned to either the one-time STT group (experimental group) or the control group. The same teaching model for voluntary contraction and relaxation of the PFM was used for all participants. Electromyographic signals from the PFM during functional tasks were the primary clinical outcome measures at baseline and immediately after the intervention. Electromyographic signals were analyzed using root mean square amplitude., Results: There was no significant difference between groups in electromyographic PFM signals in prebaseline rest (mean difference: -0.146 [95% confidence interval (CI): -0.44 to 0.148; p = 0.470]), phasic contractions (mean difference: 0.807 [95% CI: 0.123-1.491; p = 0.459]), tonic contractions (mean difference: 1.06 [95% CI: 0.255-1.865; p = 0.302]), endurance contractions (mean difference: 0.896 [95% CI: 0.057-1.735; p = 0.352]) and postbaseline rest (mean difference: -0.123 [95% CI: -0.406 to 0.16; p = 0.591]) immediately after the one-time STT intervention., Conclusion: A one-time STT intervention does not appear to effectively alter electromyographic signal of the PFM in women with urinary incontinence. The prevalence of intervertebral disc degeneration in the lumbar region resulting in low back pain is high. One of the treatment options is neurosurgery. Previous studies and systematic reviews demonstrate the need to identify factors that affect the health-related quality of life of patients undergoing surgery. This study aimed to analyze the sociodemographic and clinical factors that affect the quality of life of patients undergoing lumbar disc surgery. A group of 128 patients was assessed for eligibility and qualified by radiological examinations for lumbar disc surgery by a neurosurgeon in the outpatient clinic. Finally, 110 patients were studied and evaluated 24 h and 3 months after surgery. Health-related quality of life (36-Item Short Form Survey, SF-36), disability level (Oswestry Disability Index, ODI), and pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale, VAS) were assessed. The mean pain intensity before surgery was 7.8 ± 2.3 pts and decreased significantly 24 h after surgery, with a mean score of 3.8 ± 2.4 pts ( p = 0.0000). After three months, the increase in pain intensity was at 4.8 ± 2.4 pts, but the score was still significantly better than before surgery ( p = 0.0024). The mean ODI score before surgery was 29.3 ± 8.4 pts (slight disability), and three months after surgery, there was an insignificant increase to a mean value of 31.5 ± 10.4 pts ( p = 0.0834). There was a statistically significant increase in quality-of-life scores at three months after surgery in the following domains: physical functioning (8.7%; p = 0.0176), bodily pain (26.2%; p = 0.0000), vitality (5.8%; p = 0.0132) and mental health (6.2%; p = 0.0163), and a decrease in role limitations due to physical problems (3.8; p = 0.0013) and general health perception (6.7%; p = 0.0112). In conclusion, the surgical procedure plays an important role in improving the quality of life of patients operated on for intervertebral disc degeneration. It was effective in reducing the pain level, especially 24 h after surgery; however, surgery did not affect the disability level.

Low back pain (LBP) is a leading cause of disability and work absenteeism. The cause of LBP may be degeneration of the intervertebral disc. LBP is characterized by considerable variability and tends to develop into chronic pain. Treatment of LBP includes conservative and rehabilitative treatments, surgery, and so-called minimally invasive treatment. One of the most commonly performed procedures is interspinous stabilization using a dynamic interspinous DIAM (device for intervertebral assisted motion) stabilizer. There is still no clear, strong evidence for the effectiveness and superiority of surgical treatment over conservative treatment. This study aimed to compare the early and long-term outcomes of patients with LBP using the DIAM interspinous stabilizer in relation to patients treated conservatively. A group of 86 patients was prospectively randomized into two comparison groups: A ( n = 43), treated with the DIAM dynamic stabilizer for degenerative lumbar spine disease (mean age = 43.4 years ± SD = 10.8 years), and B ( n = 43), treated conservatively. Pain severity was assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS), whereas disability was assessed using the Oswestry disability index (ODI). The difference in preoperative and postoperative ODI scores ≥ 15 points was used as a criterion for treatment effectiveness, and the difference in VAS scores ≥ 1 point was used as a criterion for pain reduction. In patients under general anesthesia, the procedure only included implantation of the DIAM system. Patients in the control group underwent conservative treatment, which included rehabilitation, a bed regimen, analgesic drug treatment and periarticular spinal injections of anti-inflammatory drugs. It was found that all patients ( n = 43) continued to experience LBP after DIAM implantation (mean VAS score of 4.2). Of the 36 patients who experienced LBP with sciatica before the procedure, 80.5% ( n = 29) experienced a reduction in pain. As for the level of fitness, the average ODI score was 19.3 ± 10.3 points. As for the difference in ODI scores in the pre-treatment results vs. after treatment, the average score was 9.1 ± 10.6. None of the patients required reoperation at 12 months after surgery. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in either early ( p = 0.45) or long-term outcomes ( p = 0.37). In conclusion, neurosurgical treatment with the DIAM interspinous stabilizer was as effective as conservative treatment and rehabilitation during the one-year follow-up period.

Introduction: The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus infection is over 621 million in the world. In approximately 63% of cases, the patient still experiences persistent symptoms 30 days after the onset of symptoms or hospitalisation, and 45.9% of patients have experienced or will experience symptoms for at least three months. Despite the prevalence of chronic symptoms and pathological changes that may affect gait and functional mobility in people with a history of COVID-19, there are few publications investigating the impact of these abnormalities. This study aims to determine the long-term effects of COVID-19 on gait and the Timed-Up and Go Task., Material and Methods: A total of 30 individuals took part in the experiment. The subjects in the study group were infected with the COVID-19 virus and required hospital treatment. Prior to the study, the subjects had no chronic diseases or other conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. The non-infected by COVID-19 group was a healthy population with no history of COVID-19 disease. The study used the inertial system wireless motion analysis system based on 15 inertial sensors (inertial measurement units, IMUs). IMU sensors were placed on the following body segments: head, sternum, middle and lower spine, shoulder, arm, forearm, hand, shank, for the left and right limb. Movement task reports generated from the recording were created using myoRESEARCH 3.10. The subjects in the study group were asked to perform a movement task test-the Timed-Up and Go Test (TUG): sit-to-stand, walk (3 m) without change in direction, walk termination, and stand-to-sit., Results: It took 46% longer for those infected by COVID-19 (participants) to complete the entire movement task compared to those in the not-infected by COVID-19 group. Sit-to-Stand Time [s] was greater in the infected by COVID-19 group and was 2.1 ± 0.7. Mean Walking Speed [m/s] was lower than in the not-infected by COVID-19 group and was 0.26 ± 0.07. Walking cadence [steps/min] was lower and was 21.2 ± 1.2. Infected by COVID-19 participants achieved a smaller anterior pelvic tilt angle ( p < 0.001) and a smaller hip flexion angle ( p = 0.025), with an increase in knee ( p < 0.001) and ankle ( p < 0.001) flexion angles., Conclusions: Individuals in the infected by COVID-19 group present changes in the ranges of motion and the time to complete the TUG task, despite the fact that at least eight weeks passed after hospital discharge.

The number of patients with unilateral above-knee amputation (AKA) due to non-vascular causes has remained stable over the years, at 0.92 per 1000 people per year. Post-AKA individuals are at risk of experiencing a higher incidence of chronic pain. Post rehabilitation, it is estimated that between 16−62% of patients with musculoskeletal disabilities fail to meet the minimum criteria for physical activity in comparison to a healthy population. The current study included 14 participants (11 men and 3 women) with a mean age of 46.1 ± 14.2 years, body height of 1.76 ± 0.09 m, and weight of 79.6 ± 18.3 kg, who were all post-unilateral above-the-knee amputees. Patients in the study were divided into two groups: active (AC) and non-active (NAC). This study was conducted in a certified Laboratory of Biomechanical Analysis using the BTS Smart-E system (BTS Bioengineering). In order to investigate the symmetry function (SF) of gait, the only measurements included were the time series assessment of gait variables defining pelvic and lower limb joint motion and ground reaction forces (GRF). Both groups had an asymmetrical gait pattern with a different magnitude and relative position in the gait cycle, which was revealed by SF. The differences in terms of median, minimum, and maximum were statistically significant (p < 0.05), with SF ranging from −25 to 24% for the AC group and from 43 to 77% (59% on average) for the NAC group. The AC’s pattern was more symmetrical compared to the NAC’s pattern, especially in the case of pelvic and hip joint motion.

Background: Primitive reflexes (PRs) are observed as an automatic response to a specific stimulus. They are vivid from intrauterine life to 6 months postnatal. The reactions are inhibited with the growing maturation of the central nervous system (CNS). In some cases, when the natural process of development is incorrect, PRs manifest later. The analysis of differentiation in gait parameters in children with persistent PRs is important for better understanding their specific behaviour and movement. This study’s aim was to investigate the influence of active PRs on the gait parameters of preschool children. Methods: There were 50 children examined, 30 girls and 20 boys. They were 3.5−6 years old. The children had persistent PRs in the trace form. Each child was examined by S. Goddard’s Battery Test. The acquisition of the spatial-temporal gait parameters was performed using a BTS G-SENSOR measurement instrument. Participants walked barefoot, in the most natural way for them, at a self-selected speed on a 5 m walkway, then turned around and went back. They performed this twice. Results: The reflex activity influences gait cycle duration (p = 0.0099), the left step length (p = 0.0002), the left double support phase (p = 0.0024), the right double support phase (p = 0.0258) and the right single phase. Difficulties in recreating the crawling pattern and GRASP reflex influence gait cadence (p < 0.05). The left GRASP reflex corresponds to step length (p < 0.05). The activeness of the symmetrical tonic neck reflex correlates with the right single support (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The presence of PRs affect walking gait in preschool children.

Background: Shear wave elastography is an effective method for studying the condition of various musculoskeletal soft tissues. The primary aim of this study was the objective elastographic and electromyographic assessment of the pelvic floor during the rest and contraction of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) in postmenopausal women., Methods: This was a prospective observational study that was carried out at the University Hospital in Wroclaw, Poland, between January 2017 and December 2019., Patients: The target group of the study included postmenopausal women with stress urinary incontinence. The primary outcomes were the features of the elastographic assessment of the pelvic floor during rest and contraction of the PFM obtained using shear wave elastography., Results: Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the study, 14 patients took part in the measurements. There was a significant difference between the elastographic assessment of the pelvic floor during rest and contraction of the PFM at all locations in front of the urethra. No statistically significant correlation was found between the results of elastography and the bioelectrical activity of PFM., Conclusion: The elasticity of the periurethral structures is higher during active pelvic floor muscle contraction than at rest, it seems that shear wave elastography is an effective test that objectively assesses the strength of PFM contraction.

Background: Rectus abdominis diastasis (RAD) is an excessive divarication of the rectus abdominis muscle with concurrent stretching and thinning of the linea alba, which occurs due to mechanical and functional disturbances in the anterior abdominal wall and the whole body. The primary objective of this study is a palpation assessment of RAD in postpartum women before and after the application of KT tapes and a subsequent comparison of the results with those from a sham intervention group., Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted in the Physical Therapy Department at Wroclaw Medical University. The participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the KT group (intervention), in which KT tapes were applied (48 h intervention) and the sham KT group (control, sham intervention), in which non-stretch tapes were used (cloth surgical tape, 48 h intervention). In all participants, a palpation assessment of RAD was conducted and the inter-recti distance was measured using a digital caliper at three sites: at the umbilicus and 4.5 cm above and below it. Measurements were taken before and after the intervention., Results: The gathered results show a statistically significant reduction in rectus abdominis diastasis at each of the observed sites after the application of KT tapes in the intervention group ( p < 0.05). In the intergroup comparison, a statistically significantly lower RAD (at umbilicus) was found after the intervention ( p = 0.005) in KT group., Conclusions: the application of KT tapes using the corrective technique can contribute to reducing RAD in women up to 12 months after delivery.

Background: The objective gait assessment in children has become more popular. Basis parameters for comparison during the examination are advisable., Objectives: The study aim was to investigate the typical gait parameters of healthy preschool and school children, using a wireless inertial sensor as the reference for atypical gait. The additional aim was to compare the specific gait parameters in the younger and older group of children., Methods: One hundred and sixty-one children's gait parameters were evaluated by a G-Walk BTS G-SENSOR smart analyzer. The children were walking barefoot, at a self-selected speed, on a five-meter walkway, and they turned around and go back twice., Results: Age significantly influences most of the spatiotemporal parameters. The support phase becomes shorter with age. Accordingly, the swing phase becomes longer with age. The results also show that older children need shorter double support and have longer single support. Moreover, the pelvic tilt symmetry index is higher with increasing age. In each age division, the smallest variation in all gait parameters within the oldest group of examined children was observed. A comparison between the left and right side gait parameters shows the higher difference in boys than in girls. A significant difference was calculated in the pelvic obliquity symmetry index. Girls had significantly more symmetrical obliquity than boys., Conclusions: the research indicates the basic parameters of typical children's gait, which may be a reference to atypical gait in the case of trauma or disability.

Stroke is a high-risk factor for depression. Neurological rehabilitation is greatly difficult and often does not include treatment of depression. The post-stroke depression plays an important role in the progress of treatment, health, and the life of the patient. The appropriate treatment of depression could improve the quality of life of the patient and their family. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of physical activity and socio-economic status of the patient on the effectiveness of recovery from depression and the severity of the symptoms of depression. The study was conducted with 40 patients after stroke aged 42-82 years, and included 10 women and 30 men who were hospitalized for two weeks. The severity of depression/anxiety (D/A) symptoms were evaluated two times; at admission and after two weeks of physical therapy. The hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) questionnaire was used for this purpose. Socio-economic status was evaluated by several simple questions. It was revealed that physical therapy has a positive influence on mental state. The severity of D/A symptoms after stroke is related to the financial status of the patients (χ 2 = 11.198, p = 0.024). The state of health (χ 2 = 20.57, p = 0.022) and physical fitness (χ 2 = 12.95, p = 0.044) changed the severity of symptoms of anxiety and depressive disorders. The kinesiotherapy in the group of patients with post-stroke depression had positive effects; however, economic and health conditions may influence the prognosis of the disease.

Psychomotor development in the first year of life is possible due to activity and then integration of primitive (neonatal) reflexes. The presence of active primitive reflexes (APRs) in preschool and school-aged children indicates neuromotor immaturity. Studies show dependencies between the preserved activity of primary reflexes and developmental problems such as learning difficulties (problems with reading, writing, reduced mathematics skills, and dyslexia), difficulties with coordination, and attention deficit. The primary purpose of this study is to present the activity of three tonic reflexes in a sample of 112 Polish children aged 4-6 in relation to their motor skills. The children were examined for the presence of the asymmetric tonic neck reflex (ATNR), symmetric tonic neck reflex (STNR), and tonic labyrinthine reflex (TLR). Motor performance was examined with the MOT 4-6. Statistical analysis shows an inverse correlation between the score in the test of reflexes and motor efficiency (MOT 4-6) at p < 0.05 (-0.33). Children with increased reflex activity presented a lower level of motor efficiency. The multiple regression model showed that with the older age of the child and the decrease in the level of reflex activity, the motor skills of children improve. Thus, there is a need for early screening of primitive reflexes in children. Properly selected exercises and therapeutic activities aimed at integrating APRs in children with developmental difficulties can improve their motor skills, perceptual abilities, and emotional behavior.

Depression is the most common and devastating psychiatric disorder in the world. Its symptoms, especially during the pandemic, are observed in all age groups. Exercise training (ET) is well known as a non-pharmacological strategy to alleviate clinical depression. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is one of the biological factors whose expression and secretion are intensified in response to ET. BDNF is also secreted by contracted skeletal muscle that likely exerts para-, auto- and endocrine effects, supporting the crosstalk between skeletal muscle and other distant organs/tissues, such as the nervous system. This finding suggests that they communicate and work together to induce improvements on mood, cognition, and learning processes as BDNF is the main player in the neurogenesis, growth, and survival of neurons. Therefore, BDNF has been recognized as a therapeutic factor in clinical depression, especially in response to ET. The underlying mechanisms through which ET impacts depression are varied. The aim of this review was to provide information of the biological markers of depression such as monoamines, tryptophan, endocannabinoids, markers of inflammatory processes (oxidative stress and cytokines) stress and sex hormones and their relationship to BDNF. In addition, we reviewed the effects of ET on BNDF expression and how it impacts depression as well as the potential mechanisms mediating this process, providing a better understanding of underlying ET-related mechanisms in depression.

Introduction: Patients with type 2 diabetes represent 50% of all sudden cardiac deaths. Disseminated arteriosclerotic lesions are the cause of vascular incidents that cause permanent disability resulting from lower limb amputations., Objectives: Our study was designed to investigate the relationship between asymmetrical dimethylarginine (ADMA), symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) plasma concentration and intima-media thickness (IMT) in subjects with diabetes mellitus without vascular complications (group A) and a group of diabetic patients diagnosed with diabetes micro- and macroangiopathy (group B)., Patients and Method: The experimental groups included 42 diabetic patients. Group A - 22 patients (9 W and 13 M), free from vascular complications (mean age 55.83±7.37 years), group B - 20 patients (6 W, 14 M) with accompanying micro- and macropathic changes (mean age 63.80±8.79 years). Group C (n=22), the control group, consisted of healthy volunteers (12 W and 10 M), between the ages of 40 to 60 (mean age 51.16±6.39), selected in reference to the age and sex of the research group. The carotid artery intima-media complex thickness (IMT) was evaluated with the use of a duplex ultrasound., Conclusions: There was no correlation between ADMA and the maximal or mean intima-media thickness (IMT) of the common carotid artery (CCA) and internal carotid artery (ICA). We demonstrated a correlation between symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) concentration and CCA IMT. The results suggest that ICA IMT may serve as a marker of vascular complication among patients with diabetes.

Background: Above-knee amputations (AKAs) contribute to gait asymmetry. The level of asymmetry is affected by the type of knee prosthetic module. There is limited evidence suggesting that more technically advanced solutions (microprocessor modules; MicPK) are superior to less advanced ones (mechanical modules; MechPK). The study aimed to evaluate the variable range of hip and pelvic joint movements during gait and look for differentiating areas with an increased level of asymmetry of the gait cycle in individuals who underwent an AKA and are equipped with MicPK or MechPK., Methods: Twenty-eight individuals participated in the study; 14 were assigned to a study group of individuals who underwent a unilateral AKA, and the other 14 were healthy participants as a control group. The movement task was recorded using the optoelectronic SMART-E system following the standard Davis protocol (the Newington model). A new method of quantifying gait symmetry using the symmetry function (SF) is proposed. SF is an integral measure of absolute differences in time-standardized signals between sides throughout the whole cycle of motion variability., Results: In the frontal plane, there were significant differences between groups in the asymmetry of the range of movement in the hip joint of the intact limb. In the middle of the support phase, the intact limb was more adducted in individuals with MicPK and less abducted in people with MechPK (differences in mean 180%, p < 0.000; max 63%, p < 0.000; min 65%, p < 0.000). In the sagittal plane, the range of asymmetry of the flexion and thigh extension of the intact limb was similar to and only slightly different from the physiological gait. In the transverse plane, higher asymmetry values were noted for individuals with MicPK. In the final stage of the swing phase, the thigh was more rotated both externally and internally. The size of the asymmetry, when compared to gait of healthy individuals, reached 50% (differences in mean 115%, p < 0.232; max 62% p < 0.26; min 50, p < 0.154)., Conclusions: In the study group, the assessed ranges of pelvic and thigh movement in the hip joint differed only in the frontal plane. Individuals who underwent a unilateral above-knee amputation may gain less from using MicPK than anticipated.

The presence of active primitive reflexes (APRs) in healthy preschool children can be an expression of immaturity in the functioning of the nervous system. Their trace presence may not significantly affect the quality of child functioning. They may also undergo spontaneous and complete integration within the stages of child development. However, a higher level of active reflexes and their significant number can disturb sensory-motor development and lead to additional problems in a child's motor activities, social life, and education. The main purpose of this study was to examine the types of sensory disorders noticed by parents of children, if any, that accompany the presence of active primitive reflexes. The study was conducted in a group of 44 preschool children (aged 4-6 years). The sensory profile of children was determined using Child Sensory Profile Cards, and Sally Goddard-Blythe tests were used to measure their primitive reflexes. The coefficient of determination (R-squared) indicated that the level of reflex activity was most strongly associated with sensory disorders such as dyspraxia, sensory-vestibular disorders, and postural disorders, at a level of p < 0.005. The obtained research results show that the examination of non-integrated reflexes might be a screening tool for children of preschool age. Knowledge of the subject of reflexes and their impact on sensory-motor functions may contribute to more accurate diagnoses of the causes of problems and higher effectiveness of possible therapy.

Nurses consist of an occupational group that is particularly exposed to harmful work-related factors such as prolonged working hours, severe stress, fatigue, and excessive strain on the musculoskeletal system. According to nurses, the limitation of the application of ergonomic principles of work may contribute to the occurrence of numerous dangerous behaviors, improper eating habits, or deficiency of systematic physical activity. The most common consequences are nutritional disorders and musculoskeletal system dysfunctions. This prospective observational study was aimed at evaluating selected parameters of the body composition of professionally active nurses and at determining work-related risks during nursing activities. The study group consisted of 37 active nurses (38.38 ± 11.33 years). The research tool was a device for bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A questionnaire designed by the authors was also implemented, which covered ergonomic principles, musculoskeletal injuries, and nutritional habits. In the present study, it was shown that all average values of the tested nurses' body composition parameters were within the normal range. The majority of respondents (97.3%) reached a high level of body water. A statistically significant correlation was found between the knowledge of the workplace ergonomic principles and body mass index. Introduction: Hemoglobin is a protein present in erythrocytes of higher organisms. Its main function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues and carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs. Hemoglobin contains Fe 2+ , catalyzes free radical reactions, and may initiate oxidation reactions by enzymatic and nonenzymatic degradation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of balneophysiotherapy on the hemoglobin level in osteoarthritis patients and to try to assess the association of those metabolic changes with free radical reactions., Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in Przerzeczyn-Zdrój spa resort. It included patients receiving spa treatment over 21-day sessions. The studied group consisted of n  = 122 patients with joint and back pain due to osteoarthritis or disc herniation. Their age ranged between 32 and 67 years with a mean age of 53.5. Blood samples were collected before treatment and after 21 days at the spa. Standard tests were used. The results were statistically analyzed using the sign test and the Wilcoxon test., Results: In the study group, we observed a drop in the hemoglobin level following spa treatment. Before treatment, the mean hemoglobin level was 14.1549 g%, and after treatment, it was 14.0008 g%., Conclusions: (1) In the study, we concluded that balneophysiotherapy in osteoarthritis patients resulted in a decrease in the mean hemoglobin level. (2) The decrease in the mean hemoglobin level in osteoarthritis patients treated at the spa resort may indicate an association with free radical reactions. Gait is one of the examined functions in child development. It should be economical and symmetrical. One test increasingly used by physiotherapists and pediatricians is asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR). Physiologically, it is observed from in utero up to six postnatal months. This reaction is inhibited with the growing maturation of the central nervous system (CNS). In some children, when the natural process of development is incorrect, ATNR manifests later in life, when it is observed as an automatic response of muscle tension to head rotation. Analysis of pelvis symmetry in the gait of children with active ATNR is important for better understanding their specific movements. In the gait of children with persistent ATNR, some variations are observed. The aim of the study was to investigate the gait symmetry of preschool children and the influence of persistent ATNR. Fifty preschool children with a trace form of ATNR were examined. The distribution of the gait parameters was determined using a BTS G-SENSOR measurement instrument. ATNR negatively influences pelvic obliquity and pelvic rotation ( p < 0.01). Younger children have a statistically higher symmetry index of pelvis obliquity in the examined group ( p = 0.015). Boys obtain a higher result of symmetry in pelvic tilt than girls in the group ( p = 0.027). ATNR affects walking symmetry in preschool children, thus evaluation of the reflex activity and then proper therapy is required to support proper development.

Background: The use of surface electromyography (sEMG) measurements to evaluate the bioelectrical activity of the pelvic floor muscle (PFM) during therapeutic intervention is now well established. This study investigates the diagnostic possibilities of sEMG in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The aim of this study was to carry out objective assessments of the bioelectrical activity of the PFM in women after menopause and determine the prognostic value of sEMG for assessing the PFM in patients with SUI., Methods: This was a prospective, observational study that evaluated the bioelectrical activity of the PFM in postmenopausal women with or without SUI (SUI group, n = 89 vs. non-SUI group, n = 62). The study was carried out between January 2013 and December 2018 at the Clinic of Urology (Wroclaw, Poland). The protocol for all sEMG measurements of PFM activity consisted of following elements: "baseline", "quick flicks", "contractions", "static hold", and "rest tone"; we then compared these results between groups. To determine the optimal cutoff level for sEMG activation of the PFM to detect the occurrence of SUI, we performed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis (with Youden's index)., Results: Significantly lower results were obtained for all PFM measurements in women with SUI. The optimum diagnostic cutoff for "baseline" was 3.7 μV (area under curve (AUC), 0.63), "quick flicks" was 9.15 μV (AUC, 0.84), "contractions" was 11.33 μV (AUC, 0.80), "static hold" was 9.94 μV (AUC, 0.84), and "rest" was 3.89 μV (AUC, 0.63)., Conclusions: Measuring sEMG activity in the PFM may be a useful diagnostic tool to confirm the absence of SUI. We can expect that the sEMG activity of subjects with SUI will be lower than that of healthy people. In order to determine appropriate reference values for assessing sEMG activity data in the PFM, it is now necessary to conduct multicenter studies.

Introduction: Osteoarthritis of the musculoskeletal system is accompanied with chronic pain which is the main factor in mood lowering, causing anxiety. Rehabilitation conducted in the framework of spa therapy and outpatient care aims at eliminating or reducing pain and improving physical fitness. Pain relief is an expected phenomenon because it improves the quality of life. Aim of the study . The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation in the spa and in outpatient clinic on the level of pain and anxiety in patients with degenerative joints and disc disease. Material and methods . The study included a comprehensive treatment conducted in the spa and in outpatient clinic. Observation included 120 persons with disorders of the musculoskeletal system treated in the spa Przerzeczyn-Zdrój. The second group of patients was treated in the rehabilitation clinic. The examinations were performed before and after treatment. The scope of the observations included self-evaluation of anxiety treated as a state and a trait, the level of intensity of pain, medical history, and sociodemographic background interview. In the observations, there were VAS scale and State Trait Anxiety Inventory STAI used., Result: As a result of the spa therapy and therapy performed in an outpatient clinic, there was an improvement in lowering the level of pain and anxiety noted., Conclusions: 1. Spa therapy and treatment performed in an outpatient clinic reduce the level of pain and anxiety in patients with degenerative disease of the musculoskeletal system. 2. It was found that the therapy conducted in the spa was more effective in lowering the level of pain and anxiety. Spa treatment brings many clinical benefits such as improved physical activity, pain relief, and improved quality of life. In the literature, there are only few objective studies evaluating changes in metabolism possibly influencing clinical outcomes. The main purpose of our study was the assessment of the effect of spa treatment on changes in concentration of TAS, CRP, and PRL in patients with osteoarthritis. Patients receiving spa treatment were enrolled. TAS, CRP, and PRL levels were obtained using standard tests before the beginning of treatment as well as on days 5 and 18. The study group consisted of n = 35 patients with peripheral joint and spinal osteoarthritis. The control group consisted of 15 people selected from the resort staff, who also suffered from osteoarthritis and had no contact with radon. An increase in TAS concentration was found in the study group following therapy while the control group was characterized by a significant decrease in TAS. On day 5, an increase in TAS concentration was found in both groups, however, with much worse result in the control group. No changes in CRP concentration were statistically significant. PRL concentration was proven to decrease in a statistically significant way after treatment in the study group. Background: Physiotherapy should be performed by patients with stress or mixed urinary incontinence (SUI and MUI) to increase the strength and endurance of the pelvic floor muscles (PFMs). A method that can positively affect the pelvic floor is stimulation with high-inductive electromagnetic stimulation (HIES). The aim of the study was to evaluate the PFMs after the application of HIES in women with SUI and MUI by using surface electromyography (sEMG)., Methods: This was a prospective, randomized, single-blind study with a sham intervention group. The participants were randomly assigned to the HIES group or sham group. The outcomes were features of the bioelectrical PFM activity assessed using sEMG and endovaginal probes. A single-session intervention in the HIES group included 20 min of HIES with an electromagnetic induction intensity of 2.5 T., Results: In the HIES group, there was a statistically significant difference in the PFM sEMG activity during "contractions" ( p < 0.001) and "quick flicks" ( p = 0.005). In the intergroup comparison, higher PFM sEMG activity after the intervention ("contraction") was observed in the HIES group than in the sham group (after: p = 0.047; 1 h after: p = 0.017)., Conclusions: The assessed HIES method seems effective for SUI and MUI patients in the short term and shows an advantage over the sham intervention in the assessment of PFM contractions.

Introduction . Oxygen, reacting with organic compounds in living organisms, oxidizes them without being completely reduced due to numerous exogenous as well as endogenous factors. As a consequence, free radicals or reactive oxygen species are formed. Health resort-based balneophysiotherapy is a comprehensive therapeutic intervention that triggers positive therapeutic effects within the entire system. Material and Methods . The objective of the study was to assess the impact of health resort-based balneophysiotherapy on the levels of nonenzymatic endogenous antioxidants in patients with degenerative motor organ diseases, as well as to determine potential correlation of these changes with free radical-mediated processes. Observation was carried out in patients undergoing health resort therapy as part of 21-day stay periods. The study population consisted of n = 110 patients with articular and spinal pains due to degenerative diseases or discopathies., Results: Reduced bilirubin and albumin levels as well as increased uric acid levels were observed in the study group following the health resort treatment., Conclusions: Bilirubin and albumin levels were reduced while uric acid levels were increased as the result of health resort therapy in patients with degenerative motor organ diseases. The observed changes in the levels of nonenzymatic endogenous antioxidants depend on free radical-mediated systemic transformations. Purpose: Stroke-related hemiplegia is an important factor influencing parameters of gait. So far, limited papers have assessed temporo- spatial capabilities and their correlations with gait parameters in the early post-stroke stage. This pilot study evaluated the temporospatial parameters of gait and assessed the maximal isometric and isokinetic torque production of the plantar flexor and dorsiflexor muscles., Methods: 15 patients with lower limb spasticity and 15 healthy controls were included. Stroke severity was assessed using the Modified Ashworth Scale and the Barthel Index. Gait cadence, gait speed, and gait cycle were assessed using inertial sensors during a Timed Up and Go test. Maximal isometric and isokinetic torque production of the ankle plantar flexor and dorsiflexor muscles were assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer device., Results: Post-stroke patients had statistically significantly lower gait cadence than healthy participants (17%, p < 0.05). Statistically significantly lower values of vertical acceleration were also noted during a sit-to-stand movement task (42%, p < 0.05). Plantar flexion torque of the affected limb was significantly different during isometric (63%, p ≤ 0.01) and isokinetic work for 30o/s (49%, p = 0.04), 60o/s (58%, p = 0.01) and 20 °/s (53%, p = 0.01). Dorsiflexor muscles' torque production was significantly different in isometric activity (38%, p = 0.04). A statistically significant positive correlation occurred between the absolute peak torque of the dorsiflexor muscles in both static and speed phases of gait (Rs = 0.65, p = 0.04)., Conclusions: Despite the low intensity of spasticity and early phase after stroke, differences in the muscle torque production and temporo-spatial parameters, as well as the correlations between them, were noticeable.

Objectives: Nurses are extremely exposed to musculoskeletal overloads. Prolonged standing postural balance distributions, functional deficits and pain may affect the symmetry of the load on the feet. The study aimed to assess the distribution of foot load during gait among nurses., Methods: The sample of this prospective and observational study consisted of 37 female nurses with mean age of 39 years. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was used to evaluate musculoskeletal disturbances and baropodometric gait analysis (BGA) was performed to register distribution of foot load during gait., Results: We showed that 68% of nurses declare that they know the principles of workplace ergonomics, but only 14% comply with them. NMQ results indicate that as many as 73% of the respondents feel ailments in the "lower back" area. An asymmetry was observed in the load of IV-V of the metatarsal head between the left and right foot (P = .000) and in the load of the left and right lateral part of the heel (P = .028) in the BGA test. Correlations between ailments occurring in the neck area and loading of the lateral arch of the right foot (P = .032) were found. Moreover, the load in this area correlated positively with the occurrence of "lower back" pain (P = .045)., Conclusions: Nurses have asymmetric distribution of foot load during gait, which results in a discrepancy between the loads on the three main support points of the foot and which may affect nurses' work productivity., (© 2019 The Authors. Background: Post-stroke brain damage, which affects the central control of respiration, leads to various respiratory disorders. They can be caused by the weakening of the respiratory muscles and chest movements, which can indirectly contribute to an impairment of the ventilation function. The aim of the study is an objective assessment of the effect of a single-session intervention of respiratory stimulation through Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) on chosen respiratory parameters and the following comparison of these changes with a group in which positioning was used (intra- and intergroup comparison)., Methods: This was a randomized interventional study evaluating the respiratory parameters depending on the applied respiratory stimulation in patients after ischemic stroke. The patients qualified to participate in the study were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: PNF-treated group - in which respiratory stimulation through PNF was used, PNF untreated group - in which positioning was used. The research procedure consisted of several stages. First, an interview was conducted with each participant and basic data was collected. Then, spirometry was conducted, after which each patient underwent a single-session intervention according to their assigned group. Finally, the patients were given another spirometry examination. The main outcomes will be to compare the results of a spirometry test (FVC, FEV1, FEV1/ FVC%, PEF) before and after single-session intervention and between groups., Results: Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the study, 60 patients took part in the measurement. The values of FEV1/FVC% were higher in PNF-treated group than in PNF-untreated group, if the post-intervention measures (P = .04) are considered. The difference between the pre- and post-intervention results of the FEV1/FVC% values in PNF-untreated group was substantially lower than in PNF-treated group (P = .001)., Conclusion: A single application of respiratory stimulation through PNF positively affect air flow in the respiratory tract. Application of PNF stimulation contributed to an increase in the FEV1/FVC% parameter. However, no positive changes were noted in the other parameters, which would provide proof of the beneficial effect of facilitation on the respiratory system function.

Introduction: High levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and, connected with them, lipoprotein fractions may result in atherosclerosis. There are various forms of therapy used to prevent cardiovascular diseases, such as balneophysiotherapy, the effectiveness of which is confirmed by numerous scientific publications., Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of balneophysiotherapeutic procedures on the systemic metabolism of lipids in patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the motor organ., Material and Methods: The study was conducted in the Health Resort Świeradów-Zdrój. Observation included patients undergoing radon water therapy. Before therapy and after 21 days of treatment, lipid profile was assessed with the use of standard colorimetric assay. Study group consisted of n=34 patients with degenerative joints and disc disease. The mean age of patients was 56.5l. The control group consisted of 17 people selected among the employees of the spa also suffering from osteoarthritis. The mean age was 54.2 years., Results: The results of the study are based on a single, 21-day health resort stay period in April/May. A statistically significant increase in HDL cholesterol levels was observed in female patients having undergone health resort treatment ( P <0.01). Statistically significant drops in LDL cholesterol and TG levels were observed in the control group ( P <0.01). An increase in HDL levels was observed in the male and female control subjects, with P <0.05., Conclusions: (1) After the end of therapy, there were no changes in lipid metabolism in men, while in the group of women an increase in HDL level was observed. (2) In the control group, statistically significant changes in the field of lipid metabolism may be related to lifestyle changes as a result of educational activities conducted prior to the research. (3) Due to the divergent results, it is advisable to conduct randomized studies in a larger population. Background: Pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training is recommended to increase their strength and endurance. Muscles which act synergistically with PFM are taken into consideration in the therapeutic management of weakened PFM., Research Question: how does electromyography activity of the synergists muscle to PFM change concerning pelvis position and does the greater bioelectric activity of synergist muscles affect PFM function?, Methods: A prospective, observational study evaluating the surface electromyography (sEMG) activity of selected synergist muscles of the PFM depending on the orientation of the pelvis. One hundred thirty-one menopausal women registered for the study were screened for inclusion and exclusion criteria, and by the results, eighty-two participants were enrolled for measurements. The comparisons of results between the values obtained in different positions of the pelvis (anterior pelvic tilt - P1, posterior pelvic tilt - P2 and neutral pelvic tilt - P3) were performed using Kruskal-Wallis test. A multivariate linear regression analysis was used to assess relationships between the bioelectrical activity of PFM and activity of all tested muscles - rectus abdominis (RA), gluteus maximus (GM), and adductor magnus (AM)., Results: Higher RA, GM, AM bioelectrical activity was observed in the P2 as compared to P3 (during resting and functional PFM activity)(p < 0.05). Multivariate linear regression did not find the association between the bioelectrical activity of PFM and the activity of all synergist muscles in each position., Significance: sEMG activity of selected muscles acting synergistically with PFM differ depending on the pelvis position and is the highest in the posterior pelvic tilt. Greater activity of the synergists, resulting from the pelvic position, does not affect the myoelectric activity of PFM. This study focused on how pulmonary function is affected by proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) of accessory respiratory muscles in the chronic post-stroke phase. The study involved patients who had had ischemic stroke 6 months or more before the PNF treatment investigated. The objective was to define the effect of PNF on bioelectrical resting and maximum activity of the accessory muscles. Patients were randomly assigned to PNF treatment and just positioning treatment as a reference for comparison; 30 patients each. Electromyography of accessory muscles was investigated before and after physiotherapeutic treatments. We found that there was a greater reduction in EMG activity in all muscles investigated after PNF compared to positioning treatment alone. A reduction of muscle activity due to PNF concerned both affected and unaffected body side, but it was greater on the affected side. We conclude that a reduction of the accessory respiratory muscle activity due to PNF treatment could be of benefit in chronic stoke patients in that it would help normalize breathing pattern and thereby prevent the development of hypoxia.

Background: Spa reaction is an adaptive response of an organism, emerging as a result of external factors. It is a positive element of spa therapy leading to metabolic changes, which are important for the body. The effect of these changes is an increase in immune activity and regenerative reactions of the body. The mechanism of the response is not fully known., Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the changes observed in the field of the integrated antioxidant system of the body in the course of radon therapy, especially in reference to spa reaction., Material and Methods: The study was conducted in the health resort in Świeradów-Zdrój. The observation regarded patients undergoing treatment with radon water. Before the treatment, after 5 and 18 days of treatment, the total antioxidant status (TAS) was evaluated with the use of a standard colorimetric assay. The study group consisted of 35 patients with degenerative joints and disc disease. The control group consisted of 15 people selected from the employees of the spa, also suffering from osteoarthritis, who did not undergo radon therapy (without contact with radon)., Results: On the 5th day of the treatment, in both groups, the TAS increase was observed with significantly worse results in the control group. After the treatment, in the study group, there was observed an increase in TAS, whereas in the control group, a significant decrease in the TAS concentration was noted., Conclusions: A beneficial effect of radon treatments on the growth of TAS in the body of the patients treated in the spa was demonstrated. The increase in the TAS concentration on the 5th day of treatment may indicate the relationship between these changes and the phenomenon of spa response. The changes are a result of low doses of ionizing radiation originating from radon dissolved in medicinal water, used in the course of the therapy.

The aim of this paper is to present the current state of research on gait parameters in people after unilateral amputation above the knee joint and to compare these gait parameters with those of healthy people. The relevant literature does not include any similar publications. Modern prostheses do not eliminate the asymmetry of gait, although its consequences are diminished. An above-knee amputation leads to significant differences in ground reaction force parameters (GRF) between the sound and amputated limb. The amputated limb is charac-te-rised by lower values of vertical and antero-posterior GRF parameters in comparison with the intact limb. Moreover, during the contact of the heel with the ground, the degree of hip joint flexion of the amputated limb decreases in comparison with the intact limb. Other symptoms of asymmetry between the limbs include asymmetry of pelvic movement in the transverse plane and of the range of movement in the ankle joint. De-creased muscle torque on the hip joint in the amputated limb additionally increases asymmetry of biome-chanical gait parameters after unilateral transfemoral amputation.

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders mainly affecting the spine constitute one of the major social problems. Frequently, they constitute the cause of prolonged absence at work. Working in a fire brigade is specific because of the physical strain, working time under adverse conditions or stress related to rescue operations., Material and Methods: The study group comprised 61 firefighters, 60 men (98.36%) and 1 woman (1.64%). The age of examined firefighters ranged 20–56 years old. The average age of the examined persons was 33.77 years old and the average working service in a fire brigade was 9.59 years. The following research instruments were applied as the study methods: own survey, the Numerical Rating Scale, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) – long version and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) questionnaire. The Pearson correlation coefficient at significance level of p < 0.05 was used for determining the dependencies among the variables., Results: Knowledge of ergonomic lifting and handling principles concerning heavy loads was reported by 84% of the group, the remaining 16% declared ignorance of such rules. The dependence of pain on the length of service of the examined was insignificant and amounted to 0.281 Pearson’s r. The results of the ODI questionnaire did not significantly change statistically with age., Conclusions: The IPAQ confirmed the high level of physical activity of the study population. Even though the study group was small, the results of ODI showed a minor degree of disability. Background: In spite of many decades of experience and huge data resources to evaluate the results of increasingly difficult and extensive acetabulum revision operations, it is not possible to obtain fully satisfactory results. This article presents the indications for use, surgical technique, and distant and intermediate-range results in the operation of replacing a loosened acetabular component of an endoprosthesis with accompanying extensive cavitary or segmental floor defects., Material and Methods: A retrospective evaluation was performed on 65 hips in 55 patients, including bila-teral procedures in 8 women and 2 men, operated on between 1994 and 2012. The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 66 +/- 16 years. The average duration of follow-up was 9 years and 3 months., Results: Clinical results at 36 months from the surgery showed that the Harris Hip Score had increased by a mean of 47.2 HHS points and the WOMAC index had increased by 37.7 points., Conclusions: 1. The use of the method described in the article in selected cases produces good and excellent results, especially with the use of double reinforcement. 2. A basic prerequisite for the use of the basket is stable support for at least 3 arms of the basket on the acetabular bone reinforcement ring and good protection of grafts in the bone stock with sufficient biological capacity.
