Abstract

The main objective of the paper is to understand how the model’s efficiency and the selected climatic indicators are related. The hydrological model applied in this study is a conceptual rainfall-runoff model (the TUW model), which was developed at the Vienna University of Technology. This model was calibrated over three different periods between 1981-2010 in three groups of Austrian catchments (snow, runoff, and soil catchments), which represent a wide range of the hydroclimatic conditions of Austria. The model’s calibration was performed using a differential evolution algorithm (Deoptim). As an objective function, we used a combination of the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) and the logarithmic Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (logNSE). The model’s efficiency was evaluated by Volume error (VE). Subsequently, we evaluated the relationship between the model’s efficiency (VE) and changes in the climatic indicators (precipitation ΔP, air temperature ΔT). The implications of findings are discussed in the conclusion.

Abstract

Large scale modelling is becoming increasingly important in hydrology, particularly to characterize and quantify changes in the hydrological regime, whose drivers are typically large-scale phenomena, up to the global scale (e.g., climate change). This can be done with distributed models by estimating spatially consistent model parameters i.e. parameters having a functional relationship with catchment characteristics. In this study we adopt the newly developed PArameter Set Shuffling (PASS) approach, based on a machine learning decision tree algorithm, for the regional calibration of the TUWmodel over North-Western Italy. The method exploits observed patterns of locally calibrated parameters and catchment (climatic and geomorphological) descriptors, to derive functional relationships between the variables. The calibration procedure is performed by including snow cover information, as captured by MODIS datasets, in the model efficiency function. The results show that the PASS regionalization procedure allows to obtain very good regional model efficiencies, without significant loss of performance when moving from training to test catchments and from calibration to verification period, confirming the robustness of the methodology. We also highlight that using snow information in the calibration procedure is helpful to obtain spatially consistent model parameters for this study area. In the spirit of “obtaining good results for the right reasons”, this should be a preferred approach when performing the regional calibration of distributed hydrologic models over mountainous regions.

6. The impacts of climate change on nitrogen losses to the environment in Austria: A dual model analysis across spatial and temporal scales to support policy decisions

Abstract

The amounts and pathways of reactive nitrogen (Nr) losses in Austria into the surface water, soil, and atmosphere were determined under four climate change scenarios for the period 2041–2070. Two nutrient models were used to undertake the analysis at two different scales. Firstly, a semi-empirical, conceptual model (MONERIS) was setup for Austria to calculate the overall annual Nr surpluses, categorise flows of Nr, and identify regional hotspots of Nr losses. Secondly, a physically based eco-hydrological model (SWAT) was setup in three agricultural catchments to determine the hydrological processes related to Nr transport and quantify the amounts transported by various pathways in cropland at a detailed spatial and temporal resolution. The agricultural N surplus calculations for Austria were revised and used as input data for both models. The MONERIS and SWAT simulated inorganic N loads transported into waterbodies are overall similar, with average differences for the subsurface inorganic N loads of ±3 kg ha−1 yr−1 and for surface inorganic N loads of +0.4 to −0.03 kg ha−1 yr−1. Crop level N losses under future climate scenarios was contingent upon the fertilizer type, the crop grown and its accumulated biomass, as well as the type of climate scenario (wet or dry). In the SWAT model, an examination of the sensitivity of the input data (climate data and parameter values) found the dominant contribution to the sensitivity of simulated monthly discharge was from the climate data (69 % to 98 %). For simulating N loads, the climate scenarios contributed 30 % to 89 % of the sensitivity. Simulating Nr flows under climate scenarios is policy relevant to assess critical areas of N losses and identify future N transport pathways. Estimation of reference evapotranspiration values is crucial in climatological and hydrological research, agricultural engineering, and irrigation design. The Penman-Monteith method, endorsed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and numerous research studies, is widely regarded as the gold standard. However, its extensive data requirements limit its applicability in regions with sparse meteorological networks or limited measurement capabilities. The Hargreaves method, which requires only basic air temperature inputs, offers an alternative solution.

Abstract

This study proposes a new method for dividing a catchment with the aim of testing it in the calibration process of a conceptual hydrological model. The new catchment division is reflected in having different land cover zones and the input data prepared in a semi-distributed way. This study also explores the impact of satellite soil moisture data when multi-objective calibration is used with the land cover zone divisions of a catchment while assigning different weights to runoff ranging from 0% to 100% (with a 0.05 step). The results indicate that using a weight range of 60% to 80% on a runoff provides optimal results, bettering both the runoff model’s efficiency and soil moisture correlation. For further validation of the internal parameters and processes, the field capacity and evapotranspiration of the catchment were monitored. In regions with specially limited in-situ soil moisture data, satellite-derived data can contribute as an scarce additional component of the land cover division that can point out areas of the most reliable soil moisture information.

Abstract

In this study a network of three eddy covariance stations rotated between five measurement sites is used to measure evaporation (E) within the Hydrological Open Air Laboratory (HOAL) in Petzenkirchen, Austria for 8 years. Discharge measurements at the tributaries and outlet of the main catchment allow for E to be estimated for 6 subcatchments using the water balance method. Year to year variability in monthly E measured by the eddy covariance stations is found to be driven primarily by net radiation and temperature and annual E by net radiation. Year to year variability in the water balance-based E estimate was driven by precipitation. The two methods are found to be consistent, when storage and leakage are accounted for. Daily and seasonal patterns can be seen resulting from the agricultural land use cycle, due to the variations in land cover during the growing season.

Abstract

Following the rise of R as a scientific programming language, the increasing requirement for more transferable research and the growth of data availability in hydrology, R packages containing hydrological models are becoming more and more available as an open-source resource to hydrologists. Corresponding to the core of the hydrological studies workflow, their value is increasingly meaningful regarding the reliability of methods and results. Despite package and model distinctiveness, no study has ever provided a comparison of R packages for conceptual rainfall-runoff modelling from a user perspective by contrasting their philosophy, model characteristics and ease of use. We have selected eight packages based on our ability to consistently run their models on simple hydrology modelling examples. We have uniformly analysed the exact structure of seven of the hydrological models integrated into these R packages in terms of conceptual storages and fluxes, spatial discretisation, data requirements and output provided. The analysis showed that very different modelling choices are associated with these packages, which emphasises various hydrological concepts. These specificities are not always sufficiently well explained by the package documentation. Therefore a synthesis of the package functionalities was performed from a user perspective. This synthesis helps to inform the selection of which packages could/should be used depending on the problem at hand. In this regard, the technical features, documentation, R implementations and computational times were investigated. Moreover, by providing a framework for package comparison, this study is a step forward towards supporting more transferable and reusable methods and results for hydrological modelling in R.

Abstract

Spatially distributed hydrological model Mike SHE was used as a diagnostic tool to provide information on possible overland flow source areas in the mountain catchment of Jalovecký Creek (area 22.2 km2, elevation range 820–2178 m a.s.l.) during different rainfall-runoff events. Selected events represented a sequence of several smaller, consecutive events, a flash flood event and two large events caused by frontal precipitation. Simulation of hourly runoff was better for runoff events caused by heavy rainfalls of longer duration than for the flash flood or consecutive smaller runoff events. Higher soil moisture was simulated near the streamflow network and larger possibly saturated areas were located mainly in the upper parts of mountain valleys. The most pronounced increase in the areal extent of possibly saturated areas (from 6.5% to 68.6% of the catchment area) was simulated for the event with high peak discharge divided by a short rainfall interruption. Rainfall depth exceeding 100 mm caused a large increase in the potentially saturated areas that covered subsequently half of the catchment area or more. A maximum integral connectivity scale representing the average distance over which individual pixels were connected varied for the selected events between 45 and 6327 m.

Abstract

Research gaps in understanding flood changes at the catchment scale caused by changes in forest management, agricultural practices, artificial drainage, and terracing are identified. Potential strategies in addressing these gaps are proposed, such as complex systems approaches to link processes across time scales, long‐term experiments on physical‐chemical‐biological process interactions, and a focus on connectivity and patterns across spatial scales. Abstract

Interdisciplinary research and education programmes in water science are intended to produce groundbreaking research, often with an emphasis on societal relevance, and prepare future water resource experts to work across disciplines. This paper explores the emerging outcomes from an ongoing doctoral programme currently in its seventh year. Within the programme, there is both cross-disciplinary and mono-disciplinary research. Three questions are explored: (i) whether cross-disciplinary research leads to more innovative scientific findings than mono-disciplinary research, (ii) whether cross-disciplinary researchers develop professional skills that benefit their future careers, and (iii) whether cross-disciplinary research produces findings of greater societal relevance than mono-disciplinary research. Various indicators are used to measure research and education outcomes. Analysis of journal impact factors and citation rates of Institute of Scientific Information indexed publications suggests that cross-disciplinary research findings are more innovative. Comparison between graduate research profile and their career destinations suggests that researchers who learn to work across the disciplines continue to work this way in their post-doctoral positions. Analysis of media interest in research findings or their impact on policy suggests that both types of research are of societal value, but researchers often expand their understanding of a societal interest topic by bringing in new research fields.

Abstract

International audience; The geophysical and hydrological processes governing river flow formation exhibit persistence at several timescales, which may manifest itself with the presence of positive seasonal correlation of streamflow at several different time lags. We investigate here how persistence propagates along subsequent seasons and affects low and high flows. We define the high-flow season (HFS) and the low-flow season (LFS) as the 3-month and the 1-month periods which usually exhibit the higher and lower river flows, respectively. A dataset of 224 rivers from six European countries spanning more than 50 years of daily flow data is exploited. We compute the lagged seasonal correlation between selected river flow signatures, in HFS and LFS, and the average river flow in the antecedent months. Signatures are peak and average river flow for HFS and LFS, respectively. We investigate the links between seasonal streamflow correlation and various physiographic catchment characteristics and hydro-climatic properties. We find persistence to be more intense for LFS signatures than HFS. To exploit the seasonal correlation in the frequency estimation of high and low flows, we fit a bi-variate meta-Gaussian probability distribution to the selected flow signatures and average flow in the antecedent months in order to condition the distribution of high and low flows in the HFS and LFS, respectively, upon river flow observations in the previous months. The benefit of the suggested methodology is demonstrated by updating the frequency distribution of high and low flows one season in advance in a real-world case. Our findings suggest that there is a traceable physical basis for river memory which, in turn, can be statistically assimilated into high- and low-flow frequency estimation to reduce uncertainty and improve predictions for technical purposes.

Abstract

Climate change has led to concerns about increasing river floods resulting from the greater water-holding capacity of a warmer atmosphere. These concerns are reinforced by evidence of increasing economic losses associated with flooding in many parts of the world, including Europe. Any changes in river floods would have lasting implications for the design of flood protection measures and flood risk zoning. However, existing studies have been unable to identify a consistent continental-scale climatic-change signal in flood discharge observations in Europe, because of the limited spatial coverage and number of hydrometric stations. Here we demonstrate clear regional patterns of both increases and decreases in observed river flood discharges in the past five decades in Europe, which are manifestations of a changing climate. Our results—arising from the most complete database of European flooding so far—suggest that: increasing autumn and winter rainfall has resulted in increasing floods in northwestern Europe; decreasing precipitation and increasing evaporation have led to decreasing floods in medium and large catchments in southern Europe; and decreasing snow cover and snowmelt, resulting from warmer temperatures, have led to decreasing floods in eastern Europe. Regional flood discharge trends in Europe range from an increase of about 11 per cent per decade to a decrease of 23 per cent. Notwithstanding the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the observational record, the flood changes identified here are broadly consistent with climate model projections for the next century, suggesting that climate-driven changes are already happening and supporting calls for the consideration of climate change in flood risk management.

The main research question is to investigate the spatial and temporal differences in regional snowline elevation (RSLE) and to discuss the factors which control its change in Europe. The RSLE is estimated from daily MODIS snow cover data (MOD10A1) by using the methodology of Krajcí et al., (2014). The changes in RSLE are analysed for selected flood events in the period 2000-2015. The snowmelt runoff events are extracted from Catalogue of identified flood peaks from GRDC dataset (FLOOD TYPE experiment) available at http://www.water-switch-on.eu/sip-webclient/byod/#/resource/12056. The results will be discussed in terms of: (a) availability and potential of MODIS snow cover data for identifying RSLE changes during snowmelt runoff events, (b) spatial and temporal patterns of RSLE changes across Europe and (c) factor controlling the RSLE change. The analysis is performed as an experiment in Virtual Water Science Laboratory of SWITCH-ON Project (http://www.water-switch-on.eu/). All data, tools and results of the analysis will be open and accessible through the Spatial Information Platform of the Project (http://www.water-switch-on.eu/sip-webclient/byod/). We believe that such strategy will allow to improve and forward comparative research and cooperation between different partners in hydrology (Ceola et al., 2015).

Abstract

International audience; The various geophysical and hydrological processes involved in the river flow generating process exhibit persistence at several distinct timescales which propagates into the river flow behavior and manifests itself as river memory. We investigate the latter at two seasonal periods of interest, i.e. 3-month High Flow Seasons (HFS) and 1-month Dry Months (DM), by exploiting a dataset of 224 European rivers spanning more than 50 years of daily flow data. We compute the lagged seasonal correlation for the peak flows in the HFS and the average flows in the DM both against the average flows in the antecedent months. We link correlation magnitude to various geophysical catchment characteristics e.g. basin size, presence of lakes, glaciers etc., as well as rainfall-related properties such as seasonality. To exploit the river memory in flood forecasting, we fit a bivariate Meta-Gaussian probability distribution model between peak HFS flow and average pre-HFS flow in order to condition the peak flow distribution in the HFS upon observance of a higher-than-usual (e.g. 95th quantile) flow in the pre-HFS month. The benefit of the suggested methodology is demonstrated by updating a season in advance the flood frequency distribution in real-world applications. Our findings suggest that there is a traceable physical basis for river memory which in turn can be statistically assimilated into flood frequency estimation to improve predictions for technical purposes.

Abstract

The calibration of hydrological models without streamflow observations is problematic, and the simultaneous, combined use of remotely sensed products for this purpose has not been exhaustively tested thus far. Our hypothesis is that the combined use of products can (1) reduce the parameter search space and (2) improve the representation of internal model dynamics and hydrological signatures. Five different conceptual hydrological models were applied to 27 catchments across Europe. A parameter selection process, similar to a likelihood weighting procedure, was applied for 1,023 possible combinations of 10 different data sources, ranging from using 1 to all 10 of these products. Distances between the two empirical distributions of model performance metrics with and without using a specific product were determined to assess the added value of a specific product. In a similar way, the performance of the models to reproduce 27 hydrological signatures was evaluated relative to the unconstrained model. Significant reductions in the parameter space were obtained when combinations included Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer ‐ Earth Observing System and Advanced Scatterometer soil moisture, Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment total water storage anomalies, and, in snow‐dominated catchments, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer snow cover products. The evaporation products of Land Surface Analysis ‐ Satellite Application Facility and MOD16 were less effective for deriving meaningful, well‐constrained posterior parameter distributions. The hydrological signature analysis indicated that most models profited from constraining with an increasing number of data sources. Concluding, constraining models with multiple data sources simultaneously was shown to be valuable for at least four of the five hydrological models to determine model parameters in absence of streamflow.

Abstract

In a previous study, the topsoil and root zone ASCAT satellite soil moisture data were implemented into three multi-objective calibration approaches of the TUW hydrological model in 209 Austrian catchments. This paper examines the model parametrization in those catchments, which in the validation of the dual-layer conceptual semi-distributed model showed improvement in the runoff simulation efficiency compared to the single objective runoff calibration. The runoff simulation efficiency of the three multi-objective approaches was separately considered. Inferences about the specific location and the physiographic properties of the catchments where the inclusion of ASCAT data proved beneficial were made. Improvements were primarily observed in the watersheds with lower slopes (median of the catchment slope less than 15 per cent) and a higher proportion of farming land use (median of the proportion of agricultural land above 20 per cent), as well as in catchments where the runoff is not significantly influenced by snowmelt and glacier runoff. Changes in the mean and variability of the field capacity parameter FC of the soil moisture regime were analysed. The values of FC decreased by 20 per cent on average. Consequently, the catchments’ water balance closure generally improved by the increase in catchment evapotranspiration during the validation period. Improvements in model efficiency could be attributed to better runoff simulation in the spring and autumn month. The findings refine recommendations regarding when hydrological modelling could consider satellite soil moisture data added to runoff signatures in calibration useful.

Abstract

Changes in the river flood regime may be due to atmospheric processes (e.g., increasing precipitation), catchment processes (e.g., soil compaction associated with land use change), and river system processes (e.g., loss of retention volume in the floodplains). This paper proposes a new framework for attributing flood changes to these drivers based on a regional analysis. We exploit the scaling characteristics (i.e., fingerprints) with catchment area of the effects of the drivers on flood changes. The estimation of their relative contributions is framed in Bayesian terms. Analysis of a synthetic, controlled case suggests that the accuracy of the regional attribution increases with increasing number of sites and record lengths, decreases with increasing regional heterogeneity, increases with increasing difference of the scaling fingerprints, and decreases with an increase of their prior uncertainty. The applicability of the framework is illustrated for a case study set in Austria, where positive flood trends have been observed at many sites in the past decades. The individual scaling fingerprints related to the atmospheric, catchment, and river system processes are estimated from rainfall data and simple hydrological modeling. Although the distributions of the contributions are rather wide, the attribution identifies precipitation change as the main driver of flood change in the study region. Abstract

Proceedings of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, Changes in Flood Risk and Perception in Catchments and Cities, Prague, CZE, 22-/06/2015 - 02/07/2015; International audience; The current work addresses one of the key building blocks towards an improved understanding of flood processes and associated changes in flood characteristics and regimes in Europe: the development of a comprehensive, extensive European flood database. The presented work results from ongoing cross-border research collaborations initiated with data collection and joint interpretation in mind. A detailed account of the current state, characteristics and spatial and temporal coverage of the European Flood Database, is presented. At this stage, the hydrological data collection is still growing and consists at this time of annual maximum and daily mean discharge series, from over 7000 hydrometric stations of various data series lengths. Moreover, the database currently comprises data from over 50 different data sources. The time series have been obtained from different national and regional data sources in a collaborative effort of a joint European flood research agreement based on the exchange of data, models and expertise, and from existing international data collections and open source websites. These ongoing efforts are contributing to advancing the understanding of regional flood processes beyond individual country boundaries and to a more coherent flood research in Europe.

Abstract

Research gaps in understanding flood changes at the catchment scale caused by changes in forest management, agricultural practices, artificial drainage, and terracing are identified. Potential strategies in addressing these gaps are proposed, such as complex systems approaches to link processes across time scales, long-term experiments on physical-chemical-biological process interactions, and a focus on connectivity and patterns across spatial scales. It is suggested that these strategies will stimulate new research that coherently addresses the issues across hydrology, soil and agricultural sciences, forest engineering, forest ecology, and geomorphology.
