9. Effect of Demineralization on Gelatin Production from Grasshopper (Valanga nigricornis) as an Alternative of Halal Gelatin

Abstract

Gelatin is a protein derivative product resulting from the collagen breakdown in a material. The protein content in dried grasshoppers, which are halal insects, reaches 40%. Hence, they have the potential to be produced as a substitute for non-halal gelatin. This study aims to determine the effect of various acid and base solvents and soaking time in the demineralization process on the characteristics of the gelatin. This study used a completely randomized design. The treatment of solvent types in the demineralization process used 6% HCl, 1% citric acid, 3% acetic acid, pineapple extract, and NaOH; while soaking times for treatment were 24 hours, 36 hours, and 48 hours. Each soaking time and solvent type in the demineralization process gave a significant effect on the yield value (P < 0.05). Demineralization treatment using 6% HCl for 48 hours showed gelatin with the best yield than other treatments, i.e., gelatin with a moisture content of 9.93%, ash content of 1.11%, and pH 5. The characteristics of gelatin in this study are under SNI 06-3735 of 1995.

Abstract

Using natural dyes can be an alternative solution for substituting synthetic dyes that are not environmentally friendly. Besides its many advantages, there is also a disadvantage to using natural dye fabric, e.g. the appearance of microorganisms. This study aims to evaluate the results of the TiO2 coating process on natural dye fabrics based on its antimicrobial activity and colour strength. Characterization of its physical properties was also conducted using SEM, EDX, and XRD. The results show that fabric coating with TiO2 has a positive reduction in Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (96.562-99.999% at 24 hours) as the increasing concentration of TiO2. The usage of TiO2 as an antimicrobial agent in natural colour fabrics affect not significantly a colour change (ΔE=0.49–3.35, invisible to minor differences). From SEM analysis, there are no damages to the surface of the antimicrobial fibre; only small clumps are attached to the fabric due to the attachment of dye, fixative and TiO2. The EDX shows that the TiO2 fabric determines the energy position of 4.508 keV, which shows the existence of titanium with the most significant weight of 1.18%. The results of the XRD analysis showed that the degree of crystallinity of TiO2 in the fabric is low. Implementation of antimicrobial fabrics could reduce the damage to the materials and protect human's health from the adverse effects of microbes. Therefore a healthy environment can be created. Abstract

Turmeric has a bioactive compound namely curcuminoid. It has many pharmacology effects such as anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant, hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifertility, anti-venom, anti-coagulant, anti-HIV hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and anticoagulant properties. To increase the economic value of turmeric, it is necessary to develop a hydrothermal extraction process of turmeric’s active compound. The advantages of hydrothermal extraction were inexpensive, abundant availability, high purity, non-toxic, and easy to handle. This research aims to study the effect of operating conditions : temperature (130-150oC), time (10-40 minutes) and solid:liquid ratio (1:10 and 1:12) on the bioactive compounds of turmeric extracted from hydrothermal extraction process. Generally, high extraction yield was obtained at higher extraction temperature (140 and 150oC). Under these conditions, with a lower solid : liquid ratio (1:10), high concentration of curcumin is produced. Further, a higher solid : liquid ratio will likely produce the opposite result, except when it operates at low extraction temperature. The high temperature of the pressurized liquid water can reduce the viscosity and surface tension of water so it will increase the diffusion rates and absorption. The higher the solid:liquid ratio, the greater the different concentration between interior and exterior cell, which promote the high efficiency of diffusion process.

40. Antimicrobial Effectiveness toward the Natural Dyes Stock Solution from Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) Peel Extract.

Abstract

Rambutan peel contains flavonoid as a natural pigment. The utilization of rambutan peel is an effort to process rambutan peel waste into natural dyes which are environmentally friendly, and obtain new color variations. Natural dyes are often sold in solid form from its plant. Thus, it takes long time and much energy to prepare the natural colors from solid form into liquid extract. Some batik makers want to supply natural dyes in the form of stock solution which are ready to use, and have the same quality with fresh natural dyes that have just been extracted. This study aimed to produce natural dyes stock solution from rambutan peel with good quality and long storage time. The effects of preservative tyoe (citric acid, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and tamarind) and preservative concentration (1%,3%, and 5%) on the storage resistance of natural dyes stock solution were investigated until 3 months of storage. The results show that the addition of sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate was the most effective preservative for extending the shelf life of natural dye stock solution from rambutan peel extract during 3 months storage time with counts of total yeasts <1 colony/ml respectively. Abstract

Food, pharmaceutical, mineral and petroleum industries often use fluidized bed dryers for the drying process. In the present study, fluidized bed dryers in the tea processing industry is of particular interest. The main aim of this work is to investigate the effect of on the static bed height on the the coefficient of heat transfer in the fluidized bed dryer. In addition, the effect of particle size variations on the bed pressure drop in a fluidized bed dryer is also explored based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The multiphase, solid, and gas Eulerian-Eulerian models are employed to investigate the behavior of the fluidized bed dryers. The solid gas interphase interactions is predicted by the Syamlal O'Brien and Gidaspow drag models. To get more accurate results, a 3D fluidized bed model is applied. The analysis is performed by varying the particle sizes and the static bed heights. The simulation results show that the pressure drop increases with the increase in the particle size in the fluidized bed dryer. In addition, the effect of bed height variations on the coefficient of the heat transfer is also quite significant. The difference in the coefficient of the heat transfer values for each height of the static bed is highlighted. It is also found that when the height of the bed is higher, the efficiency of air to particle heat transfer becomes lower. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
