Background Aims Methods Results Conclusions Water deficit can seriously affect the growth, yield, and biochemical properties of plants; however, the application of nano‐iron chelate and arbuscular mycorrhizal fertilizers in water deficit has been considered one of the most promising methods to improve plant growth and enhance drought tolerance.This study aimed to investigate the effects of nano‐iron chelated (nFe) fertilizer and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) on the growth, yield, root colonization, mycorrhizal dependency, water use efficiency (WUE), physio‐biochemical properties, and seed biochemical properties of Lallemantia iberica and Lallemantia royleana species under drought stress.A split‐factorial experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with three replications. The main plot consisted of three drought stress levels (according to the depletion of soil available water) of 30% (I1; without stress), 60% (I2; mild stress), and 90% (I3; severe stress). The subplots were the factorial combination of fertilizers (F) (without fertilizer, nano‐iron chelate [nFe], and AMFs) and plant species (S) of Lallemantia (L. iberica and L. royleana).A decrease in the irrigation regime caused a reduction in growth, seed yield, WUE, chlorophyll content, nutrient uptake, seed oil, and mucilage content, as well as an increase in lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide. Compared with nFe, AMF significantly increased root colonization by mycorrhizal fungi in both species across irrigation regimes. Furthermore, AMF inoculation enhanced nutrient uptake, mucilage, oil, and fatty acids by increasing the WUE. Higher mycorrhizal dependency in inoculated plants played an important role in increasing proline and antioxidant activities in the leaves of the host plant. The water stress and fertilization treatments resulted in the highest root colonization, mycorrhizal dependency, proline content, and antioxidant enzyme activities in L. royleana, as well as the highest WUE, accumulation of fatty acids, and nutrient uptake was observed in L. iberica. Interestingly, the mycorrhization potential of Lallemantia sp. is clearly defined.The results highlighted that AMFs can promote Lallemantia to increase seed mucilage and oil under water stress. Overall, we found that both Lallemantia species responded well to AMF inoculation under water deficit conditions, where nFe was found to be less effective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated the effects of mycorrhizal species inoculation on the growth of Lallemantia species. Two pot experiments were performed to determine mycorrhizal species effects on growth, yield, mycorrhizal dependency, root colonization, and seed quality. Under sterile soil conditions, Lallemantia iberica and Lallemantia royleana were inoculated with Funneliformis mosseae, Funneliformis caledonius, Rhizophagus intraradices, Claroideoglomus etunicatum, Claroideoglomus claroideum, Rhizophagus fasciculatus and Diversisporles epigaea. Among mycorrhizal species, Cl. etunicatum (M1), Fu. mosseae (M2) and R. intraradices (M3) were most effective on root colonization on both species of Lallemantia. In the main experiment, for both plant species of Lallemantia, the growth, yield and yield components, seed quality, and mycorrhizal dependency (MD) parameters were studied under non-sterile and sterile soil conditions using three optimal mycorrhizal species (M1), (M2), (M3), and their mixture. Both plant species grown in non-sterile soil grew better than in sterile soil conditions. The integrated application of M1 + M2 + M3 had a better effect on measured parameters of Lallemantia species. Inoculated and non-inoculated L. iberica showed higher growth and produced more yield, thousand grain weight, phosphorus, and oil content. The number of silique in plant, number of seed in plant, mucilage, and MD of inoculated and non-inoculated L. royleana were higher than L. iberica. Generally, our result showed that both species of Lallemantia were mycorrhizal dependent, and soil sterilization led to killing of all indigenous mycorrhizal species, and as a result, it caused to decrease the growth of Lallemantia species. Antifungal substances of plant origin could be used as an inhibitor to control fungal seed diseases growth and development. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of alcoholic and aqueous extracts of few medicinal plants (Fennel, Cichorium, Asafoetida, Echinacea, Balangu (Lady's mantle and Olender) on growth and development of Alternaria alternata fungi. The experimental treatments were arranged as factorial and the data were analyzed based on a completely randomized design with three replications. The effect of seed and plant extracts, plant type (plant), and their interactions were significant on the fungal growth and development. The strong antifungal properties of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of balangu and oleander showed a broad-spectrum natural antifungal resistance in those plants. However, the results indicated a high resistance for A. alternata against the aqueous extract of fennel. This study concluded a high potential for the alcoholic extract of balangu and oleander (100% inhibition) in the biological control of the A. alternata fungus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
