Aquatic display, which forms a floating image in water without a screen, used in behavioral experiments of aquatic organisms as optical stimuli, and accurately determining the imaging position in the water is important for aquatic display. We derive a formula for the imaging distance of an aquatic image by an aquatic display, including both the thickness and refractive index of the water tank by using paraxial approximation. To examine the accuracy of the derived theoretical formula, the imaging distances are estimated at various imaging distances. We have developed the paraxial approximation for electromagnetic fields in arbitrary isotropy-broken media in terms of the ray–wave tilt and the curvature of materials' Fresnel wave surfaces. We have obtained solutions of the paraxial equation in the form of biaxial Gaussian beams, which is a novel class of electromagnetic field distributions in generic isotropy-broken materials. Such beams have been previously observed experimentally and numerically in hyperbolic metamaterials but have evaded theoretical analysis in the literature up to now. Biaxial Gaussian beams have two axes: one in the direction of the Abraham momentum, corresponding to the ray propagation, and another in the direction of the Minkowski momentum, corresponding to the wave propagation, in agreement with the recent theory of refraction, ray–wave tilt, and hidden momentum [Durach, 2024]. We show that the curvature of the wavefronts in the biaxial Gaussian beams correspond to the curvature of the Fresnel wave surface at the central wave vector of the beam. We obtain the higher-order modes of the biaxial beams, including the biaxial Hermite–Gaussian and Laguerre–Gaussian vortex beams, which opens avenues toward studies of the optical angular momentum (OAM) in isotropy-broken media, including generic anisotropic and bianisotropic materials. Lens phenomena, such as caustics, image distortions, and the formation of multiple images, are commonly observed in various refracting geometries, including raindrops, drinking glasses, and transparent vases. In this study, we investigate the ball lens as a representative example to showcase the capabilities of Berry's eye caustic as an optical tool. Unlike the conventional paraxial approximation, the eye caustic enables a comprehensive understanding of image transformations throughout the entire optical space. Through experimental exploration, we establish the relationship between the eye caustic and traditional light caustics. Furthermore, we provide mathematical expressions to describe both the caustic and the image transformations that occur when viewing objects through the ball lens. This approach could be of interest for optics education, as it addresses two fundamental challenges in image formation: overcoming the limitations of the paraxial approximation and recognizing the essential role of the observer in comprehending lens phenomena. In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of vibro-acoustography, a technique for enhancing ultrasound imaging by making use of nonlinear effects. It amounts to determining two spatially variable coefficients in a system of PDEs describing propagation of two directed sound beams and the wave resulting from their nonlinear interaction. To justify the use of Newton's method for solving this inverse problem, on one hand, we verify well-definedness and differentiability of the forward operator corresponding to two versions of the PDE model; on the other hand, we consider an all-at-once formulation of the inverse problem and prove convergence of Newton's method for its solution. In this work, the paraxial approximation of the free Dirac equation is examined. The results are first obtained by constructing superpositions of exact solutions with suitable profiles, which are borrowed from paraxial optics. In thismanner, the paraxial Dirac beams are obtained in four cases: as Gaussian, Bessel- Gaussian, modified Bessel-Gaussian and elegant Laguerre-Gaussian beams. In the second part of the work, the paraxial Dirac equation is derived, and then its solutions in the aforementioned cases are directly obtained. All the resulting wave functions conform to those derived formerly by virtue of superpositions, except for terms that are negligible upon the assumption that the paraxial functions along the propagation axis vary only slightly over a distance equal to the de Broglie wavelength, which is the standard paraxial requirement. This work concerns the asymptotic analysis of high-frequency wave propagation in randomly layered media with fast variations and long-range correlations. The analysis takes place in the three-dimensional physical space and weak-coupling regime. The role played by the slow decay of the correlations on a propagating pulse is twofold. First we observe a random travel time characterized by a fractional Brownian motion that appears to have a standard deviation larger than the pulse width, which is in contrast with the standard O'Doherty-Anstey theory for random propagation media with mixing properties. Second, a deterministic pulse deformation is described as the solution of a paraxial wave equation involving a pseudodifferential operator. This operator is characterized by the autocorrelation function of the medium fluctuations. In case of fluctuations with long-range correlations this operator is close to a fractional Weyl derivative whose order, between 2 and 3, depends on the power decay of the autocorrelation function. In the frequency domain, the pseudodifferential operator exhibits a frequency-dependent power-law attenuation with exponent corresponding to the order of the fractional derivative, and a frequency-dependent phase modulation, both ensuring the causality of the limiting paraxial wave equation as well as the Kramers-Kronig relations. Corrections of the first order of smallness to the vectors of the electromagnetic wave momentum and spin angular momentum densities are obtained in the analytical form in the paraxial approximation for an elliptically polarized incident beam of an arbitrary shape and initial launch angle. These quantities define forces and torques during optical manipulation of micro- and nanoparticles. The corrections in question partially depend on normalized Stokes parameters. They are divided into two groups according to the form of the same-type dependence on three spatial coordinates and the initial launch angle of the beam. A region of the initial launch angles of an elliptically polarized Airy beam is found, which most strongly affect the direction, magnitude, and localization of the central maximum of the corrections. The effect of approximations used in description of laser beams on the results of analytical calculations and numerical simulation of an electron motion in the field of the circularly-polarized Laguerre—Gaussian mode is considered. It is shown that corrections to the paraxial approximation and the effect of the envelope should be simultaneously taken into account for correct description of the laser beam angular momentum transfer to the electron. Recently, it was shown that the solution of the Helmholtz equation can be approximated by a series over the solutions of iterative parabolic equations (IPEs). An expansion of the fundamental solution of the Helmholtz equation over solutions of IPEs is considered. It is shown that the resulting Taylor-like series can be easily transformed into a Padé-type approximation. In practical propagation problems such iterative Padé approximations exhibit improved wide-angle capabilities and faster convergence to the solution of the Helmholtz equation in comparison to Taylor-like expansion over IPEs solutions. A Gaussian smoothing of the expansion terms gives insight into the derivation of initial conditions consistent for IPEs, which can be used for point source simulation. A correct point source model consistent with the wide-angle one-way propagation equations is important in many practical applications of the parabolic equations theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electromagnetic waves are described by Maxwell's equations together with the constitutive equation of the considered medium. The latter equation in general may introduce complicated operators. As an example, for electron cyclotron (EC) waves in a hot plasma, an integral operator is present. Moreover, the wavelength and computational domain may differ by orders of magnitude making a direct numerical solution unfeasible, with the available numerical techniques. On the other hand, given the scale separation between the free-space wavelength λ 0 and the scale L of the medium inhomogeneity, an asymptotic solution for a wave beam can be constructed in the limit κ = 2 π L / λ 0 → ∞ , which is referred to as the semiclassical limit. One example is the paraxial Wentzel-Kramer-Brillouin (pWKB) approximation. However, the semiclassical limit of the wave field may be inaccurate when random short-scale fluctuations of the medium are present. A phase-space description based on the statistically averaged Wigner function may solve this problem. The Wigner function in the semiclassical limit is determined by the wave kinetic equation (WKE), derived from Maxwell's equations. We present a paraxial expansion of the Wigner function around the central ray and derive a set of ordinary differential equations (phase-space beam-tracing equations) for the Gaussian beam width along the central ray trajectory. The propagation properties of a vortex Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beam (vHChGB) in atmospheric turbulence are investigated based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel diffraction integral and Rytov method. The analytical formula for the average intensity of a vHChGB propagating in turbulent atmosphere is derived in detail. The influence of the turbulence strength on the intensity distribution under the change of beam parameters conditions is illustrated numerically and discussed. Results show that the profile of the initial vHChGB remains unchanged within small propagation distance range, and at certain propagation distance a central peak intensity appears, and finally the beam evolves into Gaussian profile–like in far-field. The rising speed of the central peak intensity is faster when the turbulence strength is larger or the beam parameters such as the beam order, the vortex charge and the Gaussian waist width are smaller. With a small decentered parameter b, the beam profile changes faster as the wavelength is larger, whereas the reverse behavior occurs when b is large. Motion of the relativistic electron in the field of intense laser pulse of the arbitrary shape is considered. The pulse dimension is supposed to be of the order of the Gaussian laser beam dimension in the focal plane. It is supposed that the pulse is propagating along the external constant magnetic field. In the paraxial approximation the corrections of the first order to the vectors of the field of radiation as well as the force of the radiation friction are taken into account. Averaged relativistic equations of motion of electron are obtained with the help of averaging over the fast oscillations of the laser radiation. It is shown that with taking into account corrections of the first order to the field vectors an averaged force arises. This force is defined by pulsed character of radiation and proportional to the intensity but not to gradient of intensity. It is shown that radiation losses are of little importance in the transverse plane but may considerably act on the longitudinal motion of electron.

The Talbot e¤ect is usually modeled using the Helmholtz equation, but its main experimental features are captured by the solution to the free Schro ¨dinger equation with the Dirac comb as initial datum. This simplified description is a consequence of the paraxial approximation in geometric optics. However, it is a heuristic approximation that is not mathematically well justified, so K. I. Similarly to electromagnetic waves, plasma waves can also carry an orbital angular momentum. A key distinction from electromagnetic waves is that plasma waves are intrinsically coupled to electrons and may deposit their momentum with electrons, resulting in their secular motion and generation of quasistatic magnetic fields. In this paper, we present an analysis of kinetic plasma waves carrying an orbital angular momentum in the paraxial approximation by considering the energy and momentum exchange between the wave and electrons and the average electron motion induced by plasma wave damping. When waves propagate through a strongly scattering medium the energy is transferred to the incoherent wave part by scattering. The wave intensity then forms a random speckle pattern seemingly without much useful information. However, a number of recent physical experiments show how one can extract useful information from this speckle pattern. Here we present the mathematical analysis that explains the quite stunning performance of such a scheme for speckle imaging. Our analysis is based on the white-noise paraxial model, in which the wave amplitude is described by the Itô{Schrödinger equation. We identify a scaling regime where the scheme works well, which we refer to as the scintillation regime. In this regime the wavelength is smaller than the correlation radius of the medium, which in turn is smaller than the beam radius; moreover, the propagation distance is longest scale. The results presented in this paper conform with the sophisticated physical intuition that has motivated these schemes, but give a more detailed characterization of the performance. The analysis gives a description of (i) the information that can be extracted and with what resolution and (ii) the statistical stability or signal-to-noise ratio with which the information can be extracted.
