Abstract

Motivated by The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) recent direction and ever-growing interest in cloud adoption by power utilities, a Task Force was established to assist power system practitioners with secure, reliable and cost-effective adoption of cloud technology to meet various business needs. This paper summarizes the business drivers, challenges, guidance, and best practices for cloud adoption in power systems from the Task Force's perspective, after extensive review and deliberation by its members, including grid operators, utility companies, software vendors, and cloud providers. The paper begins by enumerating various business drivers for cloud adoption in the power industry. It follows with the discussion of the challenges and risks of migrating power grid utility workloads to the cloud. Next, for each corresponding challenge or risk, the paper provides appropriate guidance. Notably, the guidance is directed toward power industry professionals who are considering cloud solutions and are yet hesitant about the practical execution. Finally, to tie all the sections together, the paper documents various real-world use cases of cloud technology in the power system domain, which both the power industry practitioners and software vendors can look toward to design and select their own future cloud solutions. We hope that the information in this paper will serve as helpful guidance for the development of NERC guidelines and standards relevant to cloud adoption in the industry.

Abstract

This paper presents a new method for studying electromechanical transients in power systems using three phase, combined transmission and distribution models (hybrid models). The methodology models individual phases of an electric network and associated unbalance in load and generation. Therefore, the impacts of load unbalance, single phase distributed generation and line impedance unbalance on electromechanical transients can be studied without using electromagnetic transient simulation (EMTP) programs. The implementation of this methodology in software is called the Three Phase Dynamics Analyzer (TPDA). Case studies included in the paper demonstrate the accuracy of TPDA and its ability to simulate electromechanical transients in hybrid models. 7. Towards Three-Phase Dynamic Analysis of Large Electric Power Systems

Abstract

This thesis primarily focuses on studying the impact of Distributed Generation (DG) on the electromechanical transients in the electric grid (distribution, transmission or combined transmission and distribution (TandD) systems) using a Three Phase Dynamics Analyzer (hereafter referred to as TPDA). TPDA includes dynamic models for electric machines, their controllers, and a three-phase model of the electric grid, and performs three-phase dynamic simulations without assuming a positive sequence network model. As a result, TPDA can be used for more accurate investigation of electromechanical transients in the electric grid in the presence of imbalances. At present, the Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) software can be used to perform three-phase dynamic simulations. This software models the differential equations of the entire electric network along with those of the machines. This calls for solving differential equations with time constants in the order of milliseconds (representing the fast electric network) in tandem with differential equations with time constants in the order of seconds (representing the slower electromechanical machines). This results in a stiff set of differential equations, making such an analysis extremely time consuming. For the purpose of electromechanical transient analysis, TPDA exploits the difference in the order of time constants and adopts phasor analysis of the electric network, solving differential equations only for the equipment whose dynamics are much slower than those of the electric network. Power Flow equations are solved using a graph trace analysis based approach which, along with the explicit partitioned method adopted in TPDA, can eventually lead to the use of distributed computing that will further enhance the speed of TPDA and perhaps enable it to perform dynamic simulation in real time . In the work presented here, first an overview of the methodology behind TPDA is provided. A description of the object oriented implementation of TPDA in C++/C# is included. Subsequently, TPDA is shown to accurately simulate power system dynamics of balanced networks by comparing its results against those obtained using GE-PSLF®. This is followed by an analysis that demonstrates the advantages of using TPDA by highlighting the differences in results when the same problem is analyzed using a three-phase network model with unbalances and the positive sequence network model as used in GE-PSLF®. Finally, the impact of rapidly varying DG generation is analyzed, and it is shown that as the penetration level of DG increases, the current and voltage oscillations throughout the transmission network increase as well. Abstract

The number of grid-connected rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems is expected to increase significantly in the next few years. Many studies have been conducted on analyzing transmission level voltage stability with high PV penetration, and recent efforts have also analyzed voltage stability at the medium- and low-voltage distribution levels. However, those studies have not considered detailed distribution secondary modeling extending from the primary feeder to the service transformer and all the way through the distribution secondary connections and service drops. This study investigates how variable rooftop solar PV generation impacts voltages at customers sharing a service transformer. Several different types of secondary system topologies are taken into account. A set of rules is presented that can be used to ascertain the level of voltage volatility expected as the solar PV generation varies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
