1. Lorentz-invariant topological structures of the electromagnetic field in a Fabry-Perot resonant slit-grating

Abstract

It is commonly assumed that the most correct description of the electromagnetic world is the abstract one, and that topological constructs such as lines of force are not covariant. In the present paper, we show that for a $y$-invariant system with a $p$-polarized electromagnetic field, it is possible to construct absolute (i.e. Lorentz invariant) lines, which we call electric spaghettis (ESs). The electromagnetic field is fully described by the ES topology that transcend the limit between space and time, plus a new invariant, the characteristic parameter $\eta$. In a Fabry-Perot resonant slit-grating, three ES patterns can be distinguished, corresponding to three regions: null straight lines in plane wave regions, rounded rhombuses in the interference region inside the grating, and Bernoulli's logarithmic spiral patterns - the first ever described fractals - in the funneling region., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Recently, metamaterials-inspired diffraction gratings (or metagratings) have demonstrated unprecedented efficiency in wavefront manipulation by means of relatively simple structures. Conventional one-dimensional (1D) gratings have a profile modulation in one direction and a translation symmetry in the other. In 1D metagratings, the translation invariant direction is engineered at a subwavelength scale, which allows one to accurately control polarization line currents and, consequently, the scattering pattern. In bright contrast to metasurfaces, metagratings cannot be described by means of surface impedances (or local reflection and transmission coefficients). In this paper, we present a simulation-based design approach to construct metagratings in the "unit cell by unit cell" manner. It represents an analog of the local periodic approximation that has been used to design space-modulated metasurfaces and allows one to overcome the limitations of straightforward numerical optimization and semianalytical procedures that have been used to date to design metagratings. Electric and magnetic metagrating structures responding to, respectively, transverse electric and transverse magnetic incident plane waves are presented to validate the proposed design approach., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

3. Giant field enhancement by funneling effect into sub-wavelength slit-box resonators

Abstract

Inspired by the acoustic Helmholtz resonator, we propose a slit-box electromagnetic nanoantenna able to concentrate the energy of an incident beam into surfaces a thousand times smaller than with a classical lens. This design gives birth to giant field intensity enhancement in hot volume, throughout the slit. It reaches $10^4$ in the visible up to $10^8$ in the THz range even with focused beams thanks to an omnidirectional reception. These properties could target applications requiring extreme light concentration, such as SEIRA, non-linear optics and biophotonics.

4. Light funneling mechanism explained by magneto-electric interference

Abstract

We investigate the mechanisms involved in the funneling of the optical energy into sub-wavelength grooves etched on a metallic surface. The key phenomenon is unveiled thanks to the decomposition of the electromagnetic field into its propagative and evanescent parts. We unambiguously show that the funneling is not due to plasmonic waves flowing toward the grooves, but rather to the magneto-electric interference of the incident wave with the evanescent field, this field being mainly due to the resonant wave escaping from the groove., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures v3, added EPAPS

Abstract

We investigated the dark current components of thin planar InGaAs photodiodes grown by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy for optical nano-resonators. Owing to their high electric field enhancement, nano-resonators make it possible to substantially reduce the thickness of the active region to about 100?nm all the while maintaining high quantum efficiency. In the present study, to cover a broad spectral band, we combined several resonance peaks induced by guided-mode resonances in a given spectral range. This type of geometry allowed us to introduce InAlAs at the edge of a thin InGaAs active region in order to drastically reduce both the diffusion current and the generation/recombination current. We found that, in such devices, tunneling dark current components increase as the thickness of the active layer is reduced and dominate the reverse dark current. By optimizing the epitaxial stack, while keeping its total thickness constant (the optical properties of the nano-resonator remained unchanged), we showed that we are already able to achieve a specific detectivity of up to 1 × 1013?cm √Hz W-1 for λ = 1.55 μm&. 17. L'électrodynamique sous le fil du rasoir d'Occam

Abstract

Cent ans après la révolution einsteinienne bouleversant notre conception de l’espace et du temps, et au moment de la publication de l’observation d’une onde de distorsion de l’espace-temps, les principes sur lesquels sont traditionnellement développés mécanique et électromagnétisme reposent sur le concept du réfé- rentiel galiléen, dans lequel on écrit des équations “covariantes”. Cela présente deux inconvénients 1) l’idéalisation d’un système parfaitement calme, se mouvant sans heurt dans l’espace, est un obstacle conceptuel lorsqu’on quitte le domaine de l’espace-temps plan (celui de la relativité restreinte) pour prendre en compte la gravitation ; 2) dans l’écriture covariante les grandeurs manipulées (vitesse, champs électrique et magnétique, etc.) dépendent du référentiel choisi ce qui contrevient au principe de parcimonie. Le but de ma présentation est d’aborder la physique relativiste moderne (gravitation, mécanique, électrodynamique) en ne manipulant que des grandeurs invariantes tracées sur la carte de l’espacetemps : intervalle, masse, charge, flux magnétique et électrique, etc. Le seul outil matheacute;matique neacute;cessaire sera la formule de Pythagore (avec le signe + mais aussi avec le signe -). La question sera poséede savoir si les opinions de Feynman "the best way is to use the abstract field",et de Dyson "why is Maxwell"theory so hard to understand?" tiennent toujours ou si l'électrodynamique ne se résume pas àun simple travail de détective du cadastre de l'espace-temps.

Abstract

We investigate the mechanisms involved in the focusing of the optical energy in very narrow metallic grooves. This focusing drives the total absorption of a gold surface structured on a tiny part of its area (less than 3%). The key phenomenon is unveiled thanks to the decomposition of the electromagnetic field into its propagative and evanescent parts. Abstract

International audience; We present the experimental study of a free-standing metallic guided-mode resonant structure, for bandpass filtering applications in the mid-IR wavelength range. Structure consists of a subwavelength gold grating with narrow slits deposited on a silicon nitride membrane. High optical transmission is measured with up to 78% transmission at resonance. Angularly resolved spectra are presented revealing Fano-type resonance.
