A biosorption process has been developed for the bioremediation of heavy metal-contaminated acid drainages from Merladet and Faith open-cast mines, located in western Spain. The process is based on the physico-chemical properties for the adsorption, ion exchange, and complexation of metal ions by biopolymers (chitin and α (1,3) β-D-glucan) from industrial biowaste exhausted brewer's yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae L.). Firstly, the chemical composition (U, Mn, Al, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Ni) and the physico-chemical and ecological states of these acid mine drainages were characterised. Furthermore, the selectivity for Zn, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Al the first order kinetics and the performance of the metals biosorption process by exhausted brewer's yeast were evaluated with polluted acid synthetic waters and mine drainages. The biosorption equilibria were reached in 10 ∼ 15 min following Langmuir type isotherms with higher affinity constants for metal-biosorbent binding for synthetic waters than for acid mine drainages. The efficiency of the process with real water samples was markedly lower for the case of Mn, and zero for Zn and Al. An antagonistic interference on the biosorption of a metal due to the presence of other metals is proposed. Finally, the ecotoxicity of the acid mine drainage was removed when it was incubated with brewer's yeast trapped in polyurethane foam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We explore a portfolio constructive model, formulated in terms of satisfaction of a given set of technical requirements, with the minimum number of projects and minimum redundancy. An algorithm issued from robust portfolio modeling is adapted to a vector model, modifying the dominance condition as convenient, in order to find the set of nondominated portfolios, as solutions of a bicriteria integer linear programming problem. In order to improve the former algorithm, a process finding an optimal solution of amonocriteria version of this problem is proposed, which is further used as a first feasible solution aiding to find nondominated solutions more rapidly. Next, a sorting process is applied on the input data or information matrix, which is intended to prune nonfeasible solutions early in the constructive algorithm. Numerical examples show that the optimization and sorting processes both improve computational efficiency of the original algorithm. Their limits are also shown on certain complex instances. In complexity theory, there is a widely studied grouping of optimization problems that belongs to the non-deterministic polynomial-time hard set. One of them is the set covering problem, known as one of Karp's 21 NP -complete problems, and it consists of finding a subset of decision variables for satisfying a set of constraints at the minimum feasible cost. However, due to the nature of the problem, this cannot be solved using traditional complete algorithms for hard instances. In this work, we present an improved binary version of the monkey search algorithm for solving the set covering problem. Originally, this approximate method was naturally inspired by the cognitive behavior of monkeys for climbing mountains. We propose a new climbing process with a better exploratory capability and a new cooperation procedure to reduce the number of unfeasible solutions. For testing this approach, we present a detailed computational results section, where we illustrate how this variation of the monkey search algorithm is capable of reaching various global optimums for a well-known instance set from the Beasley's OR-Library and how it outperforms many other heuristics and meta-heuristics addressed in the literature. The set covering problem (SCP) is an NP-complete optimization problem, fitting with many problems in engineering. The traditional SCP formulation does not directly address both solution unsatisfiability and set redundancy aspects. As a result, the solving methods have to control these aspects to avoid getting unfeasible and nonoptimized in cost solutions. In the last years, an alternative SCP formulation was proposed, directly covering both aspects. This alternative formulation received limited attention because managing both aspects is considered straightforward at this time. This paper questions whether there is some advantage in the alternative formulation, beyond addressing the two issues. Thus, two studies based on a metaheuristic approach are proposed to identify if there is any concept in the alternative formulation, which could be considered for enhancing a solving method considering the traditional SCP formulation. As a result, the authors conclude that there are concepts from the alternative formulation, which could be applied for guiding the search process and for designing heuristic feasibilit\y operators. Objectives. To estimate the prevalence of unsuspected anxiety or depression in prostate cancer patients and their spouses, as well as factors involved in its onset. Materials and Methods. A prospective study of 184 patients and 137 spouses evaluated in our hospital during 2019 using the Memorial Anxiety Scale for Prostate Cancer (MAX-PC), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Patient Health Questionnaire depression module (PHQ-9). This study provides an internal validity assessment of the scales and their correlation (alpha and rho coefficients; index r). The contributions of age, education level, months after diagnosis, pain, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, stage of the disease and treatment performed to the positivity of the questionnaires were studied using the Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney and chi-square tests. Results. The prevalence of anxiety was 10.9% (MAX-PC) and 28.3% (MAX-PC-PSA). The HADS-A questionnaire indicated pathology in 14.1% of the patients and 16.05% of the spouses. Depression was detected in 7% (HADS-D) and 9.2% (PHQ-9) of patients as well as in 8.8% (HADS-D) and 16.05% (PHQ-9) of their spouses. The greatest concordance between men and women was with the PHQ-9 (Spearman's rho: 0.78; p = 0.01). Education level is significantly related to the presence of anxiety and depression, regardless of the questionnaire applied. The probability of detecting pathology in the MAX-PC varied from 6% in patients with elementary education to 23.5% in university students (p = 0.04). The greatest differences were detected when applying the PHQ-9 to patients (4% pathological, elementary education vs. 35.3% pathological, university education). Our study confirms the lack of a relationship between rates of anxiety and depression and factors such as PSA level, age of the patient and number of comorbidities. Conclusion. In this research, we present a Binary Cat Swarm Optimization for solving the Manufacturing Cell Design Problem (MCDP). This problem divides an industrial production plant into a certain number of cells. Each cell contains machines with similar types of processes or part families. The goal is to identify a cell organization in such a way that the transportation of the different parts between cells is minimized. The organization of these cells is performed through Cat Swarm Optimization, which is a recent swarm metaheuristic technique based on the behavior of cats. In that technique, cats have two modes of behavior: seeking mode and tracing mode, selected from a mixture ratio. For experimental purposes, a version of the Autonomous Search algorithm was developed with dynamic mixture ratios. The experimental results for both normal Binary Cat Swarm Optimization (BCSO) and Autonomous Search BCSO reach all global optimums, both for a set of 90 instances with known optima, and for a set of 35 new instances with 13 known optima. Abstract Background The food industry is an important sector of the world economy, that faces many challenges providing a wide range of products with short delivery times and at low-cost. Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives could assist this industry manage its challenges as the global market endures economic and political crises. Lean and Six Sigma are two widely used and recognized CI initiatives and are often hybridized as Lean Six Sigma. However, it is not clear how appropriate these strategies are for the food industry. Scope and approach A systematic literature review was performed to identify the appropriateness of Lean, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma initiatives (L&SSi) for improvement in the food industry. The aim is to consolidate the existing knowledge about the application of L&SSi in the food industry, analyze the L&SSi evolution within the sector and identify the relevant aspects of implementation such as drivers of adoption, critical success factors, tools and methods applied, barriers faced and benefits obtained. Key findings and conclusions The review suggests that L&SSi are effective in the food industry context. Their implementation in the sector is still growing. Their use was found to reduce costs and increase productivity. Human factors and the food industry characteristics were identified as the main barriers to implementing these initiatives. Future research to investigate the degree that L&SSi practices were adopted in the food industry and to identify the best practices to implement these initiatives is suggested. Evolutionary algorithms have been used to solve several optimization problems, showing an efficient performance. Nevertheless, when these algorithms are applied they present the difficulty to decide on the appropriate values of their parameters. Typically, parameters are specified before the algorithm is run and include population size, selection rate, and operator probabilities. This process is known as offline control and is even considered as an optimization problem in itself. On the other hand, parameter settings or control online is a variation of the algorithm original version. The main idea is to vary the parameters so that the algorithm of interest can provide the best convergence rate and thus may achieve the best performance. In this paper, we propose an adaptive black hole algorithm able to dynamically adapt its population according to solving performance. For that, we use autonomous search which appeared as a new technique that enables the problem solver to control and adapt its own parameters and heuristics during solving in order to be more efficient without the knowledge of an expert user. In order to test this approach, we resolve the set covering problem which is a classical optimization benchmark with many industrial applications such as line balancing production, crew scheduling, service installation, and databases, among several others. This research seeks to design, implement, and test a fully automatic high-frequency trading system that operates on the Chilean stock market, so that it is able to generate positive net returns over time. A system that implements high-frequency trading (HFT) is presented through advanced computer tools as an NP-Complete type problem in which it is necessary to optimize the profitability of stock purchase and sale operations. The research performs individual tests of the algorithms implemented, reviewing the theoretical net return (profitability) that can be applied on the last day, month, and semester of real market data. Finally, the research determines which of the variants of the implemented system performs best, using the net returns as a basis for comparison. The use of particle swarm optimization as an optimization algorithm is shown to be an effective solution since it is able to optimize a set of disparate variables but is bounded to a specific domain, resulting in substantial improvement in the final solution. The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) is a native species that was consumed as a luxurious product by the Romans. In the Strait of Gibraltar area, between southwest Iberia and North Africa, numerous oyster shells have been found in Roman archaeological sites located in both, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The origin of these oysters is unknown, as so if they were farmed or harvested in the wild and/or even imported for consumption. This study presents the results of pollen analysis of oyster shells from six archaeological sites in the Strait of Gibraltar area dated between the 1st and 6th centuries AD. This is the first time that such research is undertaken in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa; the second worldwide for a discipline rarely known until now: conchopalynology. Our study suggests that differences observed in pollen spectra could be used to identify the origin of the consumed specimens, i.e. where they were grown or harvested, discriminating whether oyster shells originated from the Mediterranean Sea or the Atlantic Ocean coastline. • We present the conchopalynology, the study of pollen content of fossil mollusc shells. • Pollen content of fossil oysters is valid for vegetation reconstruction. • Their Mediterranean or Atlantic provenance was elucidated by ordination analysis. • It have been also possible to discriminate between harvested or cultivated oysters. Constraint programming is an efficient and powerful paradigm for solving constraint satisfaction and optimization problems. Under this paradigm, problems are modeled as a sequence of variables and a set of constraints. The variables have a non-empty domain of candidate values and constraints restrict the values that variables can adopt. The solving process operates by assigning values to variables in order to produce potential solutions which are then evaluated. A main component in this process is the enumeration strategy, which decides the order in which variables and values are chosen to produce such potential solutions. There exist different ways to perform this selection, and depending on the quality of this decision, the efficiency of the solving process may dramatically vary. Unfortunately, selecting the proper strategy is known to be a hard task, as its behavior during search is generally unpredictable and certainly depends on the problem at hand. A recent trend to handle this concern, is to interleave a set of different strategies instead of using a single one during the whole process. The strategies are evaluated according to process indicators in order to use the most promising one on each part of the search process. This process is known as online control of enumeration strategies and its correct configuration can be seen itself as an optimization problem. In this paper, we present two new systems for online control of enumeration strategies based on recent nature-inspired metaheuristics: bat algorithm and black hole optimization. The bat algorithm mimics the location capabilities of bats that employ echoes to identify the objects in their surrounding areas, while black hole optimization inspires its behavior on the gravitational pull of black holes in space. We perform different experimental results by using different enumeration strategies and well-known benchmarks, where the proposed approaches are able to noticeably outperform previous work on online control. The set covering problem is a classical optimization benchmark that finds application in several real-world domains, particularly in line balancing production, crew scheduling, and service installation. The problem consists in finding a subset of columns in a zero-one matrix such that they cover all the rows of the matrix at a minimum cost. In this paper, we present two new approaches for efficiently solving this problem, the first one based on cuckoo search and the second one on black hole optimization. Both are relatively modern bio-inspired metaheuristics that have attracted much attention due to their rapid convergence, easy implementation, and encouraging obtained results. We integrate to the core of both metaheuristics an effective pre-processing phase as well as multiple transfer functions and discretization methods. Pre-processing is employed for filtering the values from domains leading to infeasible solutions, while transfers function and discretization methods are used for efficiently handling the binary nature of the problem. We illustrate interesting experimental results where the two proposed approaches are able to obtain various global optimums for a set of well-known set covering problem instances, outperforming also several recently reported techniques. The Set Covering Problem (SCP) is one of the classical Karp’s 21 NP-complete problems. Although this is a traditional optimization problem, we find many papers assuming metaheuristics for solving the SCP in the current literature. However, while the SCP is a discrete problem, most metaheuristics are defined for solving continuous optimization problems, specially Swarm Intelligence Algorithms (SIAs). Hence, such algorithms should be adapted for working on the discrete scope, but most authors did not perform any study to select a concrete binarization approach. This situation might lead to the conclusion that selecting a concrete binarization technique does not influence the behavior of the algorithm, but rather the general approach of the metaheuristic. This circumstance led us to write this paper focusing on the inherent difficulty in binarization of metaheuristics designed for continuous optimization, when solving a discrete optimization problem, concretely the SCP. To this end, we consider a recent SIA inspired by the behavior of cats and adapted to the discrete scope, which is called Binary Cat Swarm Optimization (BCSO). We replace the binarization technique assumed in the original BCSO by forty different approaches from the current literature. The results obtained while solving a standard SCP benchmark are analyzed through a widely accepted statistical method, concluding that it is crucial to select an adequate binarization approach to ensure that the solving algorithm reaches its full potential. Thus, the task of adapting a metaheuristic to the discrete scope is not a simple matter and should be carefully studied. The Machine-Part Cell Formation Problem (MPCFP) is a NP-Hard optimization problem that consists in grouping machines and parts in a set of cells, so that each cell can operate independently and the intercell movements are minimized. This problem has largely been tackled in the literature by using different techniques ranging from classic methods such as linear programming to more modern nature-inspired metaheuristics. In this paper, we present an efficient parallel version of the Migrating Birds Optimization metaheuristic for solving the MPCFP. Migrating Birds Optimization is a population metaheuristic based on the V-Flight formation of the migrating birds, which is proven to be an effective formation in energy saving. This approach is enhanced by the smart incorporation of parallel procedures that notably improve performance of the several sorting processes performed by the metaheuristic. We perform computational experiments on 1080 benchmarks resulting from the combination of 90 well-known MPCFP instances with 12 sorting configurations with and without threads. We illustrate promising results where the proposal is able to reach the global optimum in all instances, while the solving time with respect to a nonparallel approach is notably reduced. A novel matheuristic approach is presented and tested on a well-known optimisation problem, namely, capacitated facility location problem (CFLP). The algorithm combines local search and mathematical programming. While the local search algorithm is used to select a subset of promising facilities, mathematical programming strategies are used to solve the subproblem to optimality. Proposed local search is influenced by instance-specific information such as installation cost and the distance between customers and facilities. The algorithm is tested on large instances of the CFLP, where neither local search nor mathematical programming is able to find good quality solutions within acceptable computational times. The Set Covering Problem consists in finding a subset of columns in a zero-one matrix such that they cover all the rows of the matrix at a minimum cost. To solve the Set Covering Problem we use a metaheuristic called Binary Cat Swarm Optimization. This metaheuristic is a recent swarm metaheuristic technique based on the cat behavior. Domestic cats show the ability to hunt and are curious about moving objects. Based on this, the cats have two modes of behavior: seeking mode and tracing mode. The Sudoku problem is a well-known logic-based puzzle of combinatorial number-placement. It consists in filling a n2 × n2 grid, composed of n columns, n rows, and n subgrids, each one containing distinct integers from 1 to n2. Such a puzzle belongs to the NP-complete collection of problems, to which there exist diverse exact and approximate methods able to solve it. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid algorithm that smartly combines a classic tabu search procedure with the alldifferent global constraint from the constraint programming world. The alldifferent constraint is known to be efficient for domain filtering in the presence of constraints that must be pairwise different, which are exactly the kind of constraints that Sudokus own. This ability clearly alleviates the work of the tabu search, resulting in a faster and more robust approach for solving Sudokus. Constraint programming effectively solves constraint satisfaction and optimization problems by basically building, pruning, and exploring a search tree of potential solutions. In this context, a main component is the enumeration strategy, which is responsible for selecting the order in which variables and values are selected to build a possible solution. This process is known to be quite important; indeed a correct selection can reach a solution without failed explorations. However, it is well known that selecting the right strategy is quite challenging as their performance is notably hard to predict. During the last years, adaptive enumeration appeared as a proper solution to this problem. Adaptive enumeration allows the solving algorithm being able to autonomously modifying its strategies in solving time depending on performance information. In this way, the most suitable order for variables and values is employed along the search. In this paper, we present a new and more lightweight approach for performing adaptive enumeration. We incorporate a powerful classification technique named Top-k in order to adaptively select strategies along the resolution. We report results on a set of well-known benchmarks where the proposed approach noticeably competes with classical and modern adaptive enumeration methods for constraint satisfaction. The Software Project Scheduling Problem is a specific Project Scheduling Problem present in many industrial and academic areas. This problem consists in making the appropriate worker-task assignment in a software project so the cost and duration of the project are minimized. We present the design of a Max–Min Ant System algorithm using the Hyper-Cube framework to solve it. This framework improves the performance of the algorithm. A new robustness analysis framework is proposed where robustness of a solution in a decision aiding process is measured as the distance from that solution to an expected outcome, chosen by the decision-aiding analyst. The framework is explained by the application of the TODIM method of multicriteria decision aiding to the problem of predicting rental ranges for properties in a Chilean city. Therefore, the robustness concern concentrates on changes in criteria weights as well as in trade-off rates, as they are defined in the method. Two main contributions are introduced: a local robustness measure, defined in terms of a distance among rankings; and a global robustness measure, as an adaptation of the minimax-regret rule to select a global robust solution, i.e. a ranking produced by TODIM. Abstract: A Constraint Satisfaction Problem is defined by a set of variables and a set of constraints, each variable has a nonempty domain of possible values. Each constraint involves some subset of the variables and specifies the allowable combinations of values for that subset. A solution of the problem is defined by an assignment of values to some or all of the variables that does not violate any constraints. To solve an instance, a search tree is created and each node in the tree represents a variable of the instance. The order in which the variables are selected for instantiation changes the form of the search tree and affects the cost of finding a solution. In this paper we explore the use of a Choice Function to dynamically select from a set of variable ordering heuristics the one that best matches the current problem state in order to show an acceptable performance over a wide range of instances. The Choice Function is defined as a weighted sum of process indicators expressing the recent improvement produced by the heuristic recently used. The weights are determined by a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm in a multilevel approach. We report results where our combination of strategies outperforms the use of individual strategies. In Castro et al. [Castro, C., Monfroy, E., Figueroa, C., and Meneses, R. Here, we extend this framework in order to trigger some functions of a solver, or of a hybrid solver to respond to some observations of the solving process. We can also simply design adaptive hybridisation strategies by just changing some rules of the update component of our framework. We experiment with this framework on a hybrid Branch and Bound + propagation solver in which propagation can be triggered w.r.t. some observations of the solving process. The results show that some phases of propagation are not only beneficial to the Branch and Bound algorithm, but also that propagation is too costly to be executed at each node of the search tree. The balanced academic curriculum problem consists in the assignation of courses to academic periods satisfying all the load limits and prerequisite constraints. In this paper, we present the design of a solution to the balanced academic curriculum problem based on the ACO metaheuristic, in particular via the Best-Worst Ant System. Subset problems (set partitioning, packing, and covering) are formal models for many practical optimization problems. A set partitioning problem determines how the items in one set (S) can be partitioned into smaller subsets. All items in S must be contained in one and only one partition. Related problems are set packing (all itemsmust be contained in zero or one partitions) and set covering (all itemsmust be contained in at least one partition).Here, we present a hybrid solver based on ant colony optimization (ACO) combined with arc consistency for solving this kind of problems. ACO is a swarm intelligence metaheuristic inspired on ants behavior when they search for food. It allows to solve complex combinatorial problems for which traditional mathematical techniques may fail. By other side, in constraint programming, the solving process of Constraint Satisfaction Problems can dramatically reduce the search space by means of arc consistency enforcing constraint consistencies either prior to or during search. Our hybrid approach was tested with set covering and set partitioning dataset benchmarks. We solve a novel inventory-locationmodel with a stochastic capacity constraint based on a periodic inventory control (ILM-PR) policy. The ILM-PR policy implies several changes with regard to other previousmodels proposed in the literature, which consider continuous review as their inventory policy. One of these changes is the inclusion of the undershoot concept, which has not been considered in previous ILM models in the literature. Based on ourmodel, we are able to design a distribution network for a two-level supply chain, addressing both warehouse location and customer assignment decisions, whilst taking into consideration several aspects of inventory planning, in particular, evaluating the impact of the inventory control review period on the network configuration and system costs. Because the model is a very hard-to solve combinatorial nonlinear optimisation problem, we implemented two heuristics to solve it, namely, Tabu Search and Particle Swarm Optimisation. These approaches were tested over small instances in which they were able to find the optimal solution in just a few seconds. Because the model is a new one, a set of medium-size instances is provided that can be useful as a benchmark in future research. Abstract: Cell formation consists in organizing a plant as a set of cells, each of them containing machines that process similar types or families of parts. The idea is to minimize the part flow among cells in order to reduce costs and increase productivity. The literature presents different approaches devoted to solve this problem, which are mainly based on mathematical programming and on evolutionary computing. Mathematical programming can guarantee a global optimal solution, however at a higher computational cost than an evolutionary algorithm, which can assure a good enough optimum in a fixed amount of time. In this paper, we model and solve this problem by using state-of-the-art constraint programming (CP) techniques and Boolean satisfiability (SAT) technology. We present different experimental results that demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed optimization models. We present a hybridization of two different approaches applied to the well-known Capacitated Facility Location Problem (CFLP). The Artificial Bee algorithm (BA) is used to select a promising subset of locations (warehouses) which are solely included in the Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model. Next, the algorithm solves the subproblem by considering the entire set of customers. The hybrid implementation allows us to bypass certain inherited weaknesses of each algorithm, which means that we are able to find an optimal solution in an acceptable computational time. In this paper we demonstrate that BA can be significantly improved by use of the MIP algorithm. At the same time, our hybrid implementation allows the MIP algorithm to reach the optimal solution in a considerably shorter time than is needed to solve the model using the entire dataset directly within the model. Our hybrid approach outperforms the results obtained by each technique separately. It is able to find the optimal solution in a shorter time than each technique on its own, and the results are highly competitive with the state-of-the-art in large-scale optimization. In the last academic year, a training period in a surgical skills laboratory, using plastic models, was included as a part of the 'Cirurgia 3' ('Surgery 3', 6th year) programme of Faculdade Medicina Lisboa. To evaluate the training period, a structured, anonymous questionnaire was administered at the end, seeking students' responses on their satisfaction in attending the course. A global view of the answers points out students' favourable opinion of the laboratory-training period: concerning students' perceived goals for attending the course, a high degree of satisfaction was reported (globally 73% of computed scores were rated as 'good' or 'very good'); the teaching/learning environment and the delivered content got 90% 'very good' and 'good' ratings; teaching staff performance got the highest percentage of rating scores 'very good' and 'good' (95%). These ratings were dependent on variables that are unlikely to be a reflection only of glamour and seduction (clear explanations and clear demonstration of each component of the skill) and were less dependent on other variables such as 'enthusiasm for teaching' and 'relationship with students', which could be expected to be influenced by the charisma of the tutors. Helping students learn and train in surgical skills in a laboratory is challenging and our results affirm that the environment and the content were valuable for the understanding of the subject, while sessions planning and appropriate teaching technique are essential when practical skills are to be taught and learned. In this paper, we integrate the autonomous search paradigm on a swarm intelligence algorithm in order to incorporate the auto-adjust capability on parameter values during the run. We propose an independent procedure that begins to work when it detects a stagnation in a local optimum, and it can be applied to any population-based algorithms. For that, we employ the autonomous search technique which allows solvers to automatically re-configure its solving parameters for enhancing the process when poor performances are detected. This feature is dramatically crucial when swarm intelligence methods are developed and tested. Finding the best parameter values that generate the best results is known as an optimization problem itself. For that, we evaluate the behavior of the population size to autonomously be adapted and controlled during the solving time according to the requirements of the problem. The proposal is testing on the dolphin echolocation algorithm which is a recent swarm intelligence algorithm based on the dolphin feature to navigate underwater and identify prey. As an optimization problem to solve, we test a machine-part cell formation problem which is a widely used technique for improving production flexibility, efficiency, and cost reduction in the manufacturing industry decomposing a manufacturing plant in a set of clusters called cells. The goal is to design a cell layout in such a way that the need for moving parts from one cell to another is minimized. Using statistical non-parametric tests, we demonstrate that the proposed approach efficiently solves 160 well-known cell manufacturing instances outperforming the classic optimization algorithm as well as other approaches reported in the literature, while keeping excellent robustness levels. Metaheuristics are smart problem solvers devoted to tackling particularly large optimization problems. During the last 20 years, they have largely been used to solve different problems from the academic as well as from the real-world. However, most of them have originally been designed for operating over real domain variables, being necessary to tailor its internal core, for instance, to be effective in a binary space of solutions. Various works have demonstrated that this internal modification, known as binarization, is not a simple task, since the several existing binarization ways may lead to very different results. This of course forces the user to implement and analyze a large list of binarization schemas for reaching good results. In this paper, we explore two efficient clustering methods, namely KMeans and DBscan to alter a metaheuristic in order to improve it, and thus do not require on the knowledge of an expert user for identifying which binarization strategy works better during the run. Both techniques have widely been applied to solve clustering problems, allowing us to exploit useful information gathered during the search to efficiently control and improve the binarization process. We integrate those techniques to a recent metaheuristic called Crow Search, and we conduct experiments where KMeans and DBscan are contrasted to 32 different binarization methods.
