The objective of our study was to evaluate the effect of the use of legume (Arachis pintoi) or nitrogen fertilization on animal performance, characteristics of carcass and meat, and fatty acids profile of crossbred steers on Megathyrsus maximus cv. Aruana pasture, overseeded with temperate grasses. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three treatments and three replicates. The experiment was carried out from June to October (127 d). The treatments were: Low-N: 100 kg of N/ha; Medium-N: 200 kg of N/ha; and Legume: Arachis pintoi + 100 kg of N/ha. The pasture with higher nitrogen fertilization (N200) showed a more significant forage mass yield. The mixed grass with legumes presented a higher concentration of saturated fatty acids and saturated:unsaturated ratio in the meat. However, the grass pastures resulted in a higher content of unsaturated fatty acids in the meat. The other pasture variables, and characteristics of carcass and meat were not influenced by the treatments. The increase in nitrogen fertilization, from 100 to 200 kg/ha, and Arachis pintoi mixed with Aruana grass pasture overseeded with black oat and ryegrass does not affect the daily weight gain and the carcass and meat characteristics of the steers. The grass-legume mixture decreases the total concentration of unsaturated fatty acids in meat without influencing the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the forage production, nutritional value (including protein fractions), and morphogenic characteristics of African star grass on nitrogen fertilizer in a single application and split applications of two and four, under mob grazing. The study was conducted on a 1.5 ha area with well-established African star grass (Cynodon nlemfuensis). The area was divided into 18 paddocks of 400 m2. for three treatments and six replications that were assigned through a randomized block design. The treatments were: Nap1 =Single N application; Nap2= split into two N applications; and Nap4: split into four N applications. Fertilizer application was 200 kg ha-1 of N in topdressing. Pasture was monitored weekly by sward height. Grazing began when the forage reached between 25 and 30 cm in height and ceased at 10 cm. In almost all months evaluated, Nap1 recorded the highest forage production, daily accumulation rate and available forage mass. Some morphogenic characteristics changed between the fertilization strategies, particularly in the months with greater water availability. The chemical composition did not fluctuate between treatments. African star grass can be fertilized with a single application of nitrogen at 200 kg ha-1 to attain greater forage mass and proportion of leaves, without any changes to the chemical composition and nitrogen fractions. These components were modified by the vegetative phase of the forage. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a produção de forragem, o valor nutricional, frações protéicas e as características morfogênicas da grama estrela africana estabelecida (Cynodon nlemfuensis) sob adubação nitrogenada parcelada em duas, quatro ou em uma única aplicação. O estudo foi conduzido em uma área de 1,5 ha, que foi dividida em 18 piquetes de 400 m2. O experimento foi delineado estatisticamente em blocos ao acaso, constando de três tratamentos e seis repetições. Os tratamentos corresponderam a aplicação de 200 kg ha-1 de N em cobertura na forma de ureia: Nap1 = aplicação única; Nap2 = parcelado em duas aplicações; e Nap4: parcelado em quatro aplicações. A pastagem foi monitorada semanalmente a partir da medição da altura do pasto. O rebaixamento da pastagem foi realizado por novilhas leiteiras da raça holandesa com 12 meses de idade. Os animais entravam nas parcelas quando a pastagem apresentava altura de 25 a 30 cm e saiam com 10 cm. Em quase todos os meses avaliados, Nap1 apresentou a maior produção de forragem, taxa de acúmulo diário e massa de forragem disponível. Algumas características morfogênicas mudaram entre as estratégias de fertilização, principalmente nos meses de maior disponibilidade hídrica. A composição química não oscilou entre os tratamentos. O capim-estrela africano pode ser fertilizado com uma única aplicação de nitrogênio de 200 kg ha-1 para obter maior quantidade de forragem e proporção de folhas, sem alteração da composição química e das frações do nitrogênio. Esses componentes foram modificados apenas pelo ciclo vegetativo da forragem foram modificados apenas pelo ciclo vegetativo da forragem.

Essential oils and enzymes are alternatives to feed additives for ruminants that aim to replace the use of ionophores and improve animal performance, but their mechanisms of action are different. Therefore, the present study aimed to verify if there is a synergistic effect in the combined use of enzymes carbohydrates and essential oils on the performance, ingestive behavior and carcass traits of steers fed a high-energy diet. During the finishing period of 78 days, 40 steers were assigned to four treatments: CON- control; ENZ- enzymatic complex; EO- essential oil blend; ENZ+EO - enzymatic complex combined with essential oil blend. Regardless of the feedlot periods, the ENZ+EO treatment caused a reduction in the dry matter intake (12.48%) compared to the control. The ENZ+EO treatment resulted in the lowest mean fecal output and, consequently, the highest dry matter digestibility (DMD) and starch digestibility (SD), compared to the other treatments. Animals that received EO and ENZ+EO in the diet spent more time in feeding. As for the number of times animals visited the feeding trough, the highest values were presented by the animals in the EO, ENZ and ENZ+EO treatments. For the carcass parameters, only the subcutaneous fat thickness on the rib was significantly different between treatments, with the highest values obtained by adding EO and ENZ+EO (8.80 and 8.10 mm respectively). Thus, the combination of carbohydrate enzymes and essential oils proved to be synergistically beneficial in relation to better use of nutrients and productive performance of feedlot steers. Os óleos essenciais e as enzimas são alternativas de aditivos alimentares para ruminantes que visam substituir o uso de ionóforos e melhorar o desempenho animal, porém seus mecanismos de ação são distintos, diante disso, o presente estudo teve por objetivo verificar se há efeito sinérgico no uso associado de enzimas carboidrases e óleos essenciais sobre o desempenho, comportamento ingestivo e características de carcaça de novilhos recebendo dieta de alta densidade energética. Durante 78 dias, período de terminação, 40 novilhos foram distribuídos em quatro tratamentos: CON - controle; ENZ - complexo enzimático; OE - mistura de óleos essenciais; ENZ+OE - complexo enzimático associado a mistura de óleos essenciais. Independentemente dos períodos de confinamento, o tratamento ENZ+OE apresentou maior redução na ingestão de matéria seca (12,48%) quando comparado ao controle. O tratamento ENZ+OE foi o que apresentou a menor produção média de fezes e a maior digestibilidade da matéria seca (DMS) e digestibilidade do amido (DA), comparado aos demais tratamentos. Os animais que receberam dieta contendo OE e ENZ+OE passaram maior tempo se alimentando, já em relação ao número de vezes que os animais visitaram o cocho de alimentação, as maiores médias ficaram com os animais dos tratamentos OE, ENZ e ENZ+OE. Para os parâmetros avaliados em carcaça apenas a espessura de gordura subcutânea nas costelas apresentou diferença significativa entre os tratamentos, sendo as maiores médias obtidas pela adição de OE e ENZ+OE (8.80 e 8.10 mm, respectivamente). Dessa forma, a associação de enzimas carboidrases e óleos essenciais mostrou-se sinergicamente benéfica em relação ao melhor aproveitamento dos nutrientes e desempenho produtivo de novilhos confinados.

Pasture management with levels of leaf blades may favor significant increase in production, and the leaves indicated an important role in plant-animal relationship, caused by photosynthesis efficiency and better quality in animal diet. Current study identifies which leaf blade mass of the African star (Cynodon nlemfuensis var. Nlemfuensis) provides better productivity and nutritional value. Treatments comprised different leaf blade masses: 800, 1200, 1600 and 2000 kg of dry matter ha-1. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four treatments and three repetitions, totaling 12 plots with 100 m2 each. Results indicated increase in production, in the leaf/stem ratio and in the interval days according to increase in leaf blade mass. Daily accumulation rate was similar to treatments. Crude protein decreased and fiber increased with rise in leaf blade mass and the highest forage productions were reported in the treatments 1200 and 1600 kg ha-1 leaf blade mass. RESUMO. O manejo da pastagem com níveis de lâminas foliares pode favorecer incrementos significativos na produção, sendo que as folhas representa um papel importante na relação planta-animal, sendo responsável pela eficiência fotossintessintética e substrato de melhor qualidade na dieta animal. Com o intuito de avaliar as massas foliares da estrela africana (Cynodon nlemfuensis var. Nlemfuensis), o presente trabalho teve como objetivo identificar qual massa de lâmina foliar proporciona melhor produtividade e qualidade nutricional. Os tratamentos avaliados foram as diferentes massas de lâmina foliar: 800, 1.200, 1.600 e 2.000 kg de matéria seca ha-1. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e três repetições, totalizando 12 parcelas de 100 m2 cada. Os resultados indicaram elevação na produção de colmo, na relação folha: colmo e nos dias de descanso de acordo com o aumento das massas de lâminas foliares. A taxa de acumulo diário de laminas foi semelhante para os tratamentos. Além disso ocorreu decréscimo nos teores de proteína bruta e elevação nos teores de fibra em detergente neutro e ácido. No entanto, as maiores produções de forragem foram observadas nos tratamentos 1.200 e 1.600 kg ha-1 de massa de lâminas foliares.

This study evaluated the nutritive value of pastures of Coastcross-1 and Tifton 85 mixed with increasing inclusion of forage peanut (0, 25, 50, 75% occupancy area), subjected to cuts, over two study years in Southwestern Paraná State. The experimental design was factorial (three factors) distributed in randomized block. The factors were cultivars (2), the occupancy area of forage peanut (4) and seasons of cuts (5), with three replications. It was evaluated the percentage of crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and in vitro digestibility of dry matter of leaf blades, stem + sheath of grasses and available forage mass of pastures. Values of crude protein ranged from 17.0 to 20.4% and from 16.8 to 19.3% for the forage mass available of Coastcross-1 and Tifton 85, respectively. Higher digestibility values were found at the beginning of evaluations. On average, the Coastcross-1 showed better nutritive value compared to Tifton 85, and, the inclusion of forage peanut increased crude protein content in leaf blades of grasses studied, in the second year after planted. O objetivo da pesquisa foi avaliar o valor nutritivo de pastagens de Coastcross-1 e Tifton 85 consorciadas com amendoim forrageiro (0, 25, 50 e 75% da área implantada), submetidas a cortes ao longo de dois anos de estudo, em área localizada no Sudoeste do Paraná. O delineamento experimental foi o fatorial (três fatores), distribuídos em blocos ao acaso com três repetições. Os fatores foram as cultivares (2), o percentual de área implantada com o amendoim forrageiro (4) e as estações do ano que apresentaram condições de corte (5). Avaliaram-se os percentuais de proteína bruta, fibra em detergente neutro e digestibilidade in vitro da massa seca das lâminas foliares, colmo + bainha das gramíneas e da massa de forragem disponível das pastagens. Os valores de proteína bruta variaram de 17,0 a 20,4% e 16,8 a 19,3 % para a massa de forragem disponível de Coastcross-1 e Tifton 85, respectivamente. Maiores valores de digestibilidade foram verificados no início das avaliações. Em média, a cv. Coastcross-1 apresentou melhor valor nutritivo quando comparada ao capim Tifton 85, e, a maior contribuição de amendoim forrageiro elevou os teores de proteína bruta nas lâminas foliares das gramíneas estudadas, a partir do segundo ano de estabelecimento.

The present work to evaluate the effect of supplementation of urea release slow partial substitution of urea present in the common protein salt of heifers grazin Tifton-85 during the winter. The study was coducted in the period from May to September 2010. In an area of ??11.6 hectares of grazing Tifton-85 (Cynodon dactylon), divided into four paddocks of 2.9 acres, 36 heifers were kept testers (½ Red Angus ½ Nellore), treated as follows: Only mineralized salt (SM) protein salt with urea (SP); protein salt with 25% substitution of urea by slow degradation of urea (SPLD25) and protein salt with 50% substitution of urea by slow degradation of urea (SPLD50). There was no effect of different sources of supplementation on animal performance (P>0.05). However, differences were observed between the experimental periods, in consequence of the variation in chemical and structural composition of the forage. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito da suplementação com uréia de liberação lenta em substituição parcial da uréia comum, presente no sal proteinado de novilhas pastejando em capim Tifton-85 no período do inverno. O trabalho foi realizado no período de maio a setembro de 2010, em uma área de 11,6 hectares de pastagem de Tifton-85 (Cynodon dactylon), dividida em quatro piquetes de 2,9 hectares. Foram mantidas 36 novilhas testers (½ Red Angus ½ Nelore), submetidas aos seguintes tratamentos: apenas sal mineralizado (SM); sal proteinado com uréia (SP); sal proteinado com 25% de substituição da uréia por uréia de lenta degradação (SPLD25); e sal proteinado com 50% de substituição da uréia por uréia de lenta degradação (SPLD50). Não houve efeito das diferentes fontes de suplementação sobre o desempenho dos animais (P > 0,05), sendo recomendado a utilização de sal mineralizado que apresenta menor custo.

The work was carried out to assess mass production and nutritional content of winter forages using lopsided oat (Avena strigosa) and white oat (Avena sativa) intercropped with ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and vetch (Vicia sativa L.). The species were intercropped as the following treatments: lopsided oat with ryegrass (LO+RG); white oat with ryegrass (CO+RG); lopsided oat with vetch (LO+V); white oat with vetch (CO+V); lopsided oat, vetch and ryegrass (LO+RG+V); and white oat, ryegrass and vetch (CO+RG+V). The study evaluated total forage mass production of each intercropping and crude protein levels, neutral detergent fiber and in vitro digestibility coefficient of dry matter. The results indicate that forage yield of oats was higher in early assessments, and ryegrass and vetch were higher in the final evaluation period. The crude protein levels and neutral detergent fiber were higher at the start of the experiment for all evaluated treatments, and those including vetch intercropped with oats showed an increase in these parameters in the final period due to the presence of vetch, which has a more delayed cycle. O trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de verificar a produção de massa e teores nutritivos de espécies forrageiras de estação fria, utilizando pastagens de aveia preta (Avena strigosa) e aveia branca (Avena sativa) consorciadas com azevém (Lolium multiflorum) e ervilhaca comum (Vicia sativa L.). As espécies foram consorciadas conforme os tratamentos: Aveia Preta com Azevém (AVP+AZ); Aveia Branca com Azevém (AVB+AZ); Aveia Preta com Ervilhaca (AVP+E); Aveia Branca com Ervilhaca (AVB+E); Aveia Preta, Azevém e Ervilhaca (AVP+AZ+E) e Aveia Branca com Azevém e Ervilhaca (AVB+AZ+E). Foram avaliados a massa total de forragem de cada espécie e os teores de proteína bruta, fibra em detergente neutro e o coeficiente de digestibilidade "in vitro" da matéria seca. Os resultados indicam que a produção de forragem das aveias foi maior no início das avaliações e de azevém e ervilhaca no período final. Foram maiores os teores de proteína bruta e fibra em detergente neutro no início do experimento para todos os tratamentos avaliados, sendo que os que continham ervilhaca consorciada com aveia apresentaram aumento desses teores no período final pela presença exclusiva de ervilhaca que possui ciclo mais tardio.

This experiment utilized four one-hectare paddocks, grazed by thirty-two crossbreed steers (345kg mean initial weight) with or without supplementation. Production estimation and forage sampling were taken every 28 days in four places of each paddock. Chemical analyses were conducted for green leaf blade (GLB), leaf sheath + green stem (LSGS) and dead material (DM) fractions. Variations were observed on participation of GLB, LSGS and DM fractions and in CP and NDF concentration. The forage mass showed negative correlation with CP and IVDDM. Thirty-two steers, fourteen months old and average initial weigh 345 kg were used. Forage production, quality and animal performance were evaluated in a four hectare area of coastcross pasture during wet season. Steers were supplemented with two energy sources: soybean hulls (SH) and oat grains (OG). Animals were allotted in four treatments: without supplement (WS), 0.6% of body weight (BW) with OG, 0.6% of BW with SH; and 0.3% of BW with soybean hulls + 0.3% of BW with oat grain (OGSH) on dry matter basis. There was (p < 0.05) a decrease in forage mass, leaf blade and forage offer resulting in decrease in average live weight gain (ALWG) and in gain per hectare with advance of trial seasons. There was no supplement effect (p > 0.05) on average daily gain (ADG) that ranged from 0.667 (WS) and 0.840 kg/day (SH) Foram utilizados 32 novilhos mestiços inteiros, com 14 meses e peso médio de 345 kg. Foram avaliadas características de produção, o valor nutritivo e o desempenho desses animais em pastagem de Coastcross no período das águas, em uma área de 4,0 ha, suplementados com duas fontes de energia: casca de soja (CS) e grãos de aveia (AV). Os animais foram distribuídos em 4 tratamentos: sem suplemento (SS); suplemento à 0,6% do PV com AV; suplemento à 0,6% do PV com CS; e suplemento à 0,3% do PV com AV + 0,3% do PV com CS (CSAV). Observou-se decréscimo na massa de forragem, nas lâminas foliares, na oferta de forragem e, conseqüentemente no ganho médio diário (GMD) e por hectare com o avanço dos períodos experimentais (p < 0,05), ocorrendo aumentos na taxa de lotação e no teor de proteína bruta. Não houve efeito (p < 0,05) do tipo de suplemento sobre o GMD que variou de 0,667 (SS) a 0,840 kg/dia (CS)
