Deadwood ,Forest Heterogeneity ,Fourth-corner Problem ,Italy ,Joint Species Distribution Models ,Microhabitats ,Forestry ,SD1-669.5 - Abstract
In the managed beech forests of Central Italy (Molise), the diversity of saproxylic species is potentially under threat by intensive management. To evaluate the impact of forestry on the biodiversity of these ecosystems, we analyzed the relationship between abundance of saproxylic beetles and (i) forest stand exposure and elevation, (ii) deadwood availability (coarse woody debris - CWD - and stumps), (iii) abundance of microhabitats. Four sampling sectors with different altitudes and exposure were identified in a 400-ha study area in the Appenine mountains. Fifteen circular plots (13 m radius) were established in each sector where deadwood and microhabitats were surveyed and saproxylic beetles sampled. We fitted joint species distribution models to quantify the relationship between forest attributes and saproxylic species’ abundance, including the interactions with their family and trophic category. Overall, 2334 specimens belonging to 64 species of saproxylic beetles were collected. Both abundance and species richness were higher in the sectors with high elevation (respectively, 55% and 44%) and South exposure (respectively, 28% and 44%). Average deadwood volumes were low (stumps: 7.6 m3 ha-1; CWD: 0.3 m3 ha-1; snags: 0.4 m3 ha-1), and insect galleries were the most abundant microhabitat (380 records over a total of 434). The most important variables affecting abundance were stump characteristics (model deviance = 81.2), elevation (deviance = 64.7), and CWD characteristics (deviance = 58.0). Our results show that topographical variables and forest structure jointly affect the abundance patterns of saproxylic beetle communities in managed beech forests. These ecological interactions imply that management has different impacts on the saproxylic communities in different topographic conditions. To acknowledge this complexity we advocate for a landscape-level forest management supporting the local beetle diversity maintaining a mosaic of semi-natural forest characteristics in different topographic contexts. The ecological value of the forest landscape will be further enhanced by the application of closer-to-nature management interventions based on deadwood retention, microhabitat creation and tree retention, in line with the guidelines of the new EU Forest Strategy for 2030.

Within network analysis, the analytical maximum entropy framework has been very successful for different tasks as network reconstruction and filtering. In a recent paper, the same framework was used for link-prediction for monopartite networks: link probabilities for all unobserved links in a graph are provided and the most probable links are selected. Here we propose the extension of such an approach to bipartite graphs. We test our method on two real world networks with different topological characteristics. Our performances are compared to state-of-the-art methods, and the results show that our entropy-based approach has a good overall performance., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. We investigate a series of manganese oxides, the La0.225Pr0.4(Ca1-xSrx)0.375MnO3 system. The x = 0 sample is a prototype compound for the study of phase separation in manganites, where ferromagnetic and charge ordered antiferromagnetic phases coexist. Replacing Ca2+ by Sr2+ gradually turns the system into a homogeneous ferromagnet. Our results show that the material structure plays a major role in the observed magnetic properties. On cooling, at temperatures below 100 K, a strong contraction of the lattice is followed by an increase in the magnetization. This is observed both through thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements, providing distinct evidence of magneto-elastic coupling in these phase separated compounds.

We investigate the behavior of ultrasharp metamagnetic transitions in La(5/8-y)Nd(y)Ca(3/8)MnO(3) manganites. These compounds change from a low temperature ferromagnetic metallic state at low Nd doping to a charge-ordered antiferromagnetic insulator for high Nd content. At an intermediate doping a phase-separated state is established. At low temperatures (2 K), we observe an avalanche-like field-induced metamagnetic transition, when the entire compound changes abruptly from one phase to the other. We investigate the signatures of this ultrasharp transition using magnetization and specific heat measurements. We observe a first order transition in the specific heat associated with discontinuous jumps in the magnetization. A strong increase of the sample temperature is simultaneously observed. The results are interpret in terms of latent heat release from the field induced enhancement of the ferromagnetic fraction, triggering the avalanche process.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We have performed electrical resistivity and DC magnetization measurements as a function of temperature, on polycrystalline samples of phase separated LaPrCaMnO. We have used the General Effective Medium Theory to obtain theoretical resistivity vs. temperature curves corresponding to different fixed ferromagnetic volume fraction values, assuming that the sample is a mixture of typical metallic like and insulating manganites. By comparing this data with our experimental resistivity curves we have obtained the relative ferromagnetic volume fraction of our sample as a function of temperature. This result matches with the corresponding magnetization data in excellent agreement, showing that a mixed phase scenario is the key element to explain both the magnetic and transport properties in the present compound., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Physics - Computational Physics ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
In this article we develop a numerical scheme to deal with interfaces between touching numerical grids when solving the second-order wave equation. We show that it is possible to implement an interface scheme of "penalty" type for the second-order wave equation, similar to the ones used for first-order hyperbolic and parabolic equations, and the second-order scheme used by Mattsson et al (2008). These schemes, known as SAT schemes for finite difference approximations and penalties for spectral ones, and ours share similar properties but in our case one needs to pass at the interface a smaller amount of data than previously known schemes. This is important for multi-block parallelizations in several dimensions, for it implies that one obtains the same solution quality while sharing among different computational grids only a fraction of the data one would need for a comparable (in accuracy) SAT or Mattsson et al.'s scheme. The semi-discrete approximation used here preserves the norm and uses standard finite-difference operators satisfying summation by parts. For the time integrator we use a semi-implicit IMEX Runge-Kutta method. This is crucial, since the explicit Runge-Kutta method would be impractical given the severe restrictions that arise from the stiff parts of the equations., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

We report a heat dynamics analysis of the electrocaloric effect (ECE) in commercial multilayer capacitors based on BaTiO3 dielectric, a promising candidate for applications as a solid state cooling device. Direct measurements of the time evolution of the sample's temperature changes under different applied voltages allow us to decouple the contributions from Joule heating and from the ECE. Heat balance equations were used to model the thermal coupling between different parts of the system. Fingerprints of Joule heating and the ECE could be resolved at different time scales. We argue that Joule heating and the thermal coupling of the device to the environment must be carefully taken in to account in future developments of refrigeration technologies employing the ECE., Comment: Acepted to be published in Applied Phys. Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We present a study of the magnetocaloric effect in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.3) and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 manganites. The low temperature state of both ystems is the result of a competition between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The samples display magnetocaloric effect evidenced in an adiabatic temperature change during a metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase . As additional features, La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 exhibits phase separation characterized by the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 displays inverse magnetocaloric effect in which temperature decreases while applying an external magnetic field. In both cases, a significant part of the magnetocaloric effect appears from non-reversible processes. As the traditional thermodynamic description of the effect usually deals with reversible transitions, we developed an alternative way to calculate the adiabatic temperature change in terms of the change of the relative ferromagnetic fraction induced by magnetic field. To evaluate our model, we performed direct measurement of the sample's adiabatic temperature change by means of a differential thermal analysis. An excellent agreement has been obtained between experimental and calculated data. These results show that metamagnetic transition in manganites play an important role in the study of magnetic refrigeration., Comment: Acepted to be published in Applied Physics Letters

- Abstract
COVID-19 negatively affected surgical activity, but the potential benefits resulting from adopted measures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in surgical activity and potential benefit from COVID-19 measures in perspective of Italian surgeons on behalf of SPIGC. A nationwide online survey on surgical practice before, during, and after COVID-19 pandemic was conducted in March–April 2022 (NCT:05323851). Effects of COVID-19 hospital-related measures on surgical patients’ management and personal professional development across surgical specialties were explored. Data on demographics, pre-operative/peri-operative/post-operative management, and professional development were collected. Outcomes were matched with the corresponding volume. Four hundred and seventy-three respondents were included in final analysis across 14 surgical specialties. Since SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, application of telematic consultations (4.1% vs. 21.6%; p < 0.0001) and diagnostic evaluations (16.4% vs. 42.2%; p < 0.0001) increased. Elective surgical activities significantly reduced and surgeons opted more frequently for conservative management with a possible indication for elective (26.3% vs. 35.7%; p < 0.0001) or urgent (20.4% vs. 38.5%; p < 0.0001) surgery. All new COVID-related measures are perceived to be maintained in the future. Surgeons’ personal education online increased from 12.6% (pre-COVID) to 86.6% (post-COVID; p < 0.0001). Online educational activities are considered a beneficial effect from COVID pandemic (56.4%). COVID-19 had a great impact on surgical specialties, with significant reduction of operation volume. However, some forced changes turned out to be benefits. Isolation measures pushed the use of telemedicine and telemetric devices for outpatient practice and favored communication for educational purposes and surgeon–patient/family communication. From the Italian surgeons’ perspective, COVID-related measures will continue to influence

We present magnetic and transport measurements on La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 with y = 0.3, a manganite compound exhibiting intrinsic multiphase coexistence of sub-micrometric ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic charge ordered regions. Time relaxation effects between 60 and 120K, and the obtained magnetic and resistive viscosities, unveils the dynamic nature of the phase separated state. An experimental procedure based on the derivative of the time relaxation after the application and removal of a magnetic field enables the determination of the otherwise unreachable equilibrium state of the phase separated system. With this procedure the equilibrium phase fraction for zero field as a function of temperature is obtained. The presented results allow a correlation between the distance of the system to the equilibrium state and its relaxation behavior., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. Very fast magnetic avalanches in (La, Pr)-based manganites are the signature of a phase transition from an insulating blocked charge-ordered (CO-AFM) state to a charge delocalized ferromagnetic (CD-FM) state. We report here the experimental observation that this transition does not occur neither simultaneously nor randomly in the whole sample but there is instead a spatial propagation with a velocity of the order of tens of m/s. Our results show that avalanches are originated in the inside of the sample, move to the outside and occur at values of the applied magnetic field that depend on the CD-FM fraction in the sample. Moreover, a change in the gradient of the magnetic field along the sample shifts the point where the avalanches are ignited., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

We present a phenomenological model based on the thermodynamics of the phase separated state of manganites, accounting for its static and dynamic properties. Through calorimetric measurements on La$_{0.225}$Pr$_{0.40}$Ca$ _{0.375}$MnO$_{3}$ the low temperature free energies of the coexisting ferromagnetic and charge ordered phases are evaluated. The phase separated state is modeled by free energy densities uniformly spread over the sample volume. The calculations contemplate the out of equilibrium features of the coexisting phase regime, to allow a comparison between magnetic measurements and the predictions of the model. A phase diagram including the static and dynamic properties of the system is constructed, showing the existence of blocked and unblocked regimes which are characteristics of the phase separated state in manganites., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to Phys. Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
Detailed magnetization measurements in La_{5/8-y}Pr_{y}Ca_{3/8} MnO_{3}, including magnetic relaxation properties, demonstrate the dynamic nature of the phase separated state in manganites. The difference between the field-cooled-cooling and zero-field-cooled magnetization curves signals the existence in the latter of blocked metastable states separated by high energy barriers. Results of the magnetic viscosity show that the system becomes unblocked in a certain temperature window, where large relaxation rates are observed. We propose a simple phenomenological model in which the system evolves through a hierarchy of energy barriers, which separates the coexisting phases. The calculated magnetization curves using this model reproduce all the qualitative features of the experimental data. The overall results allowed us to construct an H-T phase diagram, where frozen and dynamical phase separation regions are clearly distinguished., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures included, submitted to Phys. We have studied a non volatile memory effect in the mixed valent compound La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ induced by magnetic field (H). In a previous work [R.S. Freitas et al., Phys. Rev. B 65 (2002) 104403], it has been shown that the response of this system upon application of H strongly depends on the temperature range, related to three well differentiated regimes of phase separation occurring below 220 K. In this work we compare memory capabilities of the compound, determined following two different experimental procedures for applying H, namely zero field cooling and field cooling the sample. These results are analyzed and discussed within the scenario of phase separation., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We have studied the effect of irreversibility induced by repeated thermal cycles on the electric transport and magnetization of polycrystalline samples of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and La0.325Pr0.3Ca0.375MnO3. An increase of the resistivity and a decrease of the magnetization at different temperature ranges after cycling is obtained in the temperature range between 300 K and 30 K. Both compounds are known to exhibit intrinsic submicrometric coexistence of phases and undergo a sequence of phase transitions related to structural changes. Changes induced by thermal cycling can be partially inhibited by applying magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure. Our results suggest that the growth and coexistence of phases with different structures gives rise to microstructural tracks and strain accommodation, producing the observed irreversibility. Irrespective of the actual ground state of each compound, the effect of thermal cycling is towards an increase of the amount of the insulating phase in both compounds., Comment: to appear in Journal of Alloys and Compounds (2003)

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
The occurrence at low temperatures of an ultrasharp field-induced transition in phase separated manganites is analyzed. Experimental results show that magnetization and specific heat step-like transitions below 5 K are correlated with an abrupt change of the sample temperature, which happens at a certain critical field. This temperature rise, a magnetocaloric effect, is interpreted as produced by the released energy at the transition point, and is the key to understand the existence of the abrupt field-induced transition. A qualitative analysis of the results suggests the existence of a critical growing rate of the ferromagnetic phase, beyond which an avalanche effect is triggered., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures included. Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We have studied magnetic and transport properties on different manganese oxide based compounds exhibiting phase separation: polycrystalline La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.3) and La1/2Ca1/2Mn1-zFezO3 (z = 0.05), and single crystals of La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.35). Time dependent effects indicate that the fractions of the coexisting phases are dynamically changing in a definite temperature range. We found that in this range the ferromagnetic fraction f can be easily tuned by application of low magnetic fields (< 1 T). The effect is persistent after the field is turned off, thus the field remains imprinted in the actual value of f and can be recovered through transport measurements. This effect is due both to the existence of a true phase separated equilibrium state with definite equilibrium fraction f0, and to the slow growth dynamics. The fact that the same global features were found on different compounds and in polycrystalline and single crystalline samples, suggests that the effect is a general feature of some phase separated media., Comment: Proceedings of the MISM-2002 Moscow International Symposium on Magnetism, Moscow, 20-24 June 2002. We have measured magnetic and transport response on the polycrystalline La$_{5/8-y}$Pr$_y$Ca$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$ ($y=0.30$, average grain size 2 microns) compound. In the temperature range where ferromagnetic metallic and insulating regions coexist we observed a persistent memory of low magnetic fields ($<$ 1 T) which is determined by the actual amount of the ferromagnetic phase. The possibility to manipulate this fraction with relatively small external perturbations is related to the phase separated nature of these manganese oxide based compounds. The colossal magnetoresistance figures obtained (about 80%) are determined by the fraction enlargement mechanism. Self-shielding of the memory to external fields is found under certain described circumstances. We show that this non-volatile memory has multilevel capability associated with different applied low magnetic field values., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures included, to appear in Phys. Rev. The time dependent response of the magnetic and transport properties of Fe-doped phase separated (PS) manganite La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ is reported. The nontrivial coexistence of ferromagnetic (FM) and non FM regions induces a slow dynamics which leads to time relaxation and cooling rate dependence within the PS regime. This dynamics influences drastically on physical properties. On one hand, metallic like behavior, assumed to be a fingerprint of percolation, can be also observed before the FM phase percolates as a result of dynamical contributions. On the other one, two novel effects for the manganites are reported, namely the rejuvenation of the resistivity after ageing, and a persistent memory of low magnetic fields ($<$ 1 T), imprinted in the amount of the FM phase. As a distinctive fact, this memory can be recovered through transport measurements., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures included

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We present magnetization studies in a series of phase separated La$_{0.5}$Ca$%_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ samples, with different low temperature fractions of the ferromagnetic (FM) and charge ordered-antiferromagnetic (CO-AFM) phases. A particular experimental procedure probes the effect of the magnetic field applied while cooling the samples, which promotes FM fraction enlargement and enhances the melting of the CO phase. The response of the system depending on its magnetic field history indicates the existence of three different regimes in the phase separated state which develops below T$_{C}$. Our data allows us to identify the onset temperature below which the system becomes magnetic and structurally phase separated, and an onset field above which FM fraction enlargement occurs., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures included, Submitted to Phys. The results are interpreted in the framework of the field induced ferromagnetic fraction enlargement mechanism. A fraction expansion coefficient af, which relates the ferromagnetic fraction f with the applied field H, was obtained. The effect of Fe doping in the Mn site on the magnetic, transport and structural properties of polycrystalline La1/2Ca1/2MnO3 was studied. Doping with low Fe concentration (< 10%) strongly affects electrical transport and magnetization. Long range charge order is disrupted even for the lowest doping level studied (~2%). For Fe concentration up to 5% a ferromagnetic state develops at low temperature with metallic like conduction and thermal hysteresis. In this range, the Curie temperature decreases monotonously as a function of Fe doping. Insulating behavior and a sudden depression of the ferromagnetic state is observed by further Fe doping., Comment: 2 pages, presented at ICM2000, to appear in JMMM

The effect of low magnetic fields on the transport properties of a manganite compound with magnetic phase separation is studied. The different behavior obtained in samples of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 related to the way in which the low field is applied is consistent with a picture of changes in the metallic fraction induced by the magnetic field in a field-cooled cycle. Using a simple model of conduction through a binary mixture, the interrelation between magnetoresistance, metallic fraction and percolation temperature is accounted for. A new physical coefficient relating magnetic field and metallic fraction emerges as the relevant parameter in the description of phase separated manganites., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures included. Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
A systematic study of phase separation effects in polycrystalline La_0.5 Ca_0.5 Mn O_3 obtained under different thermal treatments is reported. Samples with average grain size ranging from 200 to 1300 nm were studied. Magnetic and electrical measurements show quantitative differences among samples in their low temperature behavior. indicating that the fraction of the ferromagnetic (FM) phase gradually decreases as the grain size increase. Percolation of the FM phase in samples with a small fraction of this phase suggests that grain boundaries play a distinctive role in the spatial distribution of coexisting phases. The defective structure at the grain surface could explain the local inhibition of the antiferromagnetic charge ordered phase, an effect that is gradually removed with increasing grain size. Qualitative agreement of the data with this description is found. This effect is also found to be highly dependent on the oxygen content of the samples and its spatial distribution., Comment: To be published, Phys.Rev. B; 5 pages, 6 figures

Deadwood is a substantial component of forests playing a central role in many ecosystem processes. It provides habitats for a multitude of wood-dependent organisms, maintaining the ecosystem health and reducing the effect of natural disturbances. Deadwood is recognized as an indicator of local species diversity and contributes to the global carbon pools and nutrient cycles. Despite its importance, how saproxylic communities respond to deadwood dynamics across multiple spatial and temporal scales is still not clear. With the present review, we aim to summarize the effects of deadwood characteristics on the diversity and composition of saproxylic insects and fungi, with focus on European forests. We also discuss the influence of other biotic and abiotic components that indirectly affect these communities by altering wood continuity and variety. Niche differentiation is the main ecological driver of saproxylic organisms, as the presence of multiple microhabitats supports differently specialized taxa. The assemblage and richness of these saproxylic communities within forest ecosystems can be considered as indicators of climate-smart forestry trajectories. This aspect deserves to be regarded as a major target in sustainable forest management plans, especially in mountain areas, where the conservation of threatened species and the promotion of biodiverse forests are considered a priority.
