Background/Objectives: There is limited evidence on gene-nutrient interaction associated with hypertension (HTN). We examined interactions between genotypes and various nutrients that influenced high blood pressure (BP). Methods: Data were obtained from a total of 50,808 participants from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). Dietary intake was assessed by a food frequency questionnaire, and dietary reference intakes (DRIs) were set. We performed genome-wide association analyses (GWAS) and subsequent interaction analyses with genome-wide significant SNPs to identify genomic loci that interact with specific nutrients associated with HTN. Results: We identified one locus near the CUB and Sushi Multiple Domains 1 (CSMD1) gene that showed interaction with dietary iron and vitamin B6 (Vit.B6) intake and significantly influenced HTN risk. Among the individuals consuming iron above DRI (9.5 mg/day for men, 9.25 mg/day for women), carriers of the rs13282715 minor allele (A) at 8p23.2 showed a lower risk of HTN than those who did not (odds ratio [OR] 0.723, 95% confidence interval [CI] (0.644–0.813), p-value 4.858 × 10−8; interaction p-value 1.336 × 10−3). Among the individuals consuming Vit.B6 above DRI (1.5 mg/day for men, 1.4 mg/day for women), carriers of the same variant rs13282715 minor allele (A) also showed a lower risk of HTN (OR 0.733, 95% CI 0.733 (0.656–0.819), p-value 4.121 × 10−8; interaction p-value 7.183 × 10−4). Conclusions: We identified a novel gene-nutrient interaction regarding dietary iron and Vit.B6 intake affecting the risk of HTN in Korean adults. This suggests individuals with the variant may benefit from lower HTN risk from dietary intervention of iron and Vit.B6 intake. Objectives: The association between food insecurity and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) in the population with obesity is unclear. We evaluated factors associated with MUO and the relationship between food insecurity and MUO in individuals with obesity. Methods: We analyzed data from 5191 adults with obesity (body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2) from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2019–2021. MUO was defined when participants with obesity had any of the following: (1) triglycerides ≥ 150 mg/dL, (2) High-density lipoprotein-cholesterol < 40 mg/dL (men), <50 mg/dL (women), (3) systolic blood pressure ≥ 135 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure ≥85 mmHg or on treatment for hypertension, (4) fasting glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL, or on treatment for diabetes. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MUO according to food security status, sociodemographic characteristics, and lifestyle factors were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of MUO and metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) among the participants was 85.4% and 14.6%, respectively. In the multivariate model, the OR (95% CIs) for MUO in the food insecurity group was 1.87 (1.03–3.43). The odds for MUO were higher among participants with older age, higher BMI, <12 years of education, lower fat intake, non-manual work, and moderated and low physical activity than among their counterparts. Conclusions: Food insecurity, older age, higher BMI, lower educational level, lower fat intake, non-manual workers, and lower physical activity were associated with MUO. Serum γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) is positively related to cardiometabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and metabolic syndrome (MetS), in adult populations. Our aim was to investigate whether serum GGT is independently associated with MetS and its components in a nationally representative sample of Korean children and adolescents. The study included data from 1,618 participants (867 boys, 751 girls) aged 10-18 years from the 2010-2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. MetS was diagnosed by the 2007 International Diabetes Federation criteria for children and adolescents. Participants were stratified using a cut-off value of the 75th percentile of serum GGT levels (19 IU/L for boys, 15 IU/L for girls). The odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for MetS and its components were determined with multiple logistic regression analyses. The mean values of most cardiometabolic variables were significantly higher in the upper stratum. Except for low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in boys and elevated blood pressure in girls, participants in the upper GGT stratum had significantly higher odds of MetS and its components than those in the lower stratum. The multivariate-adjusted odds ratios for MetS for the upper stratum were 5.79 (95% confidence interval 1.21-27.02) in boys and 6.20 (95% confidence interval 1.71-22.47) in girls, after adjusting for age, household income and residential area. Serum GGT was positively associated with MetS and its components in Korean children and adolescents. Serum GGT could be a useful measure for identifying children and adolescents with MetS.

Background and Objectives: Posterior cervical foraminotomy (PCF) aims to resolve cervical radiculopathy while preserving range of motion (ROM). However, its effectiveness in maintaining ROM is uncertain. This study investigates the changes in ROM after PCF and identifies preoperative factors that influence ROM reduction post surgery. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients treated at our hospital from August 2016 to September 2021. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS) for neck and arm pain and the neck disability index (NDI). Radiological outcomes included the segmental angle (SA), cervical angle (CA), C2–C7 SVA, Pfirrmann grade, extent of facetectomy, foraminal stenosis, and ROM. Patients were categorized into two groups based on segmental ROM changes: decreased (Group D) and maintained (Group M). Radiological and clinical outcomes were compared between the groups. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for ROM loss after PCF. Results: 76 patients were included: 34 in Group D and 42 in Group M, with no demographic differences. Preoperatively, Group D had significantly larger flexion segmental and cervical angles than Group M (segmental, p < 0.001; cervical, p = 0.001). Group D also had a higher Pfirrmann grade (p = 0.014) and more bony bridge formations (p = 0.004). While no significant differences were observed in arm pain VAS and NDI scores, Group D exhibited worse neck pain VAS at the last follow-up (p = 0.03). Univariate linear regression indicated that preoperative segmental ROM (p < 0.001, B = 0.82) and bony bridge formation (p = 0.046, B = 5.33) were significant predictors of ROM loss post PCF. Conclusions: Patients with higher preoperative flexion angles and Pfirrmann grades at the operative level are at an increased risk for ROM loss and neck pain and often exhibit bony bridge formation. Hydrogel electrolytes consisting of salt ions, water solvents, and 3D polymer networks play the roles of an electrolyte and a separating membrane. These are receiving attention as a substitute for the currently used liquid electrolyte/separator materials in aqueous Zn metal batteries (AZMBs). In this study, a structural composite hydrogel electrolyte is designed by incorporating layered alumina microplatelets within a polymer matrix to achieve high mechanical strength, stiffness, hardness, thermal conductivity, and a large dielectric constant. The hydrogel electrolyte simultaneously achieves mechanical robustness and fast Zn ion transfer, enabling uniform Zn deposition without notable dendrite growth and propagation. Moreover, the rapid heat‐dissipating ability of the electrolyte demonstrates the potential for effective thermal management of AZMB cells. Consequently, Zn||Zn symmetric cells composed of the as‐designed electrolyte exhibit stable Zn plating/stripping behavior at various temperatures. Zn||poly(3,4‐ ethylenedioxythiophene)‐vanadium pentoxide (PVO) full cells have large energy densities of 356.9 W h kg−1 at 25 °C and 216.6 W h kg−1 at −20 °C and long‐term stability over 1,000 cycles. Further, pouch‐type Zn||PVO full cells with large energy densities operate stably while bent, folded, rolled, cut in half, or immersed in boiling and freezing water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
