13. Exploiting Lithium–Ether Co‐Intercalation in Graphite for High‐Power Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract

The intercalation of lithium ions into graphite electrode is the key underlying mechanism of modern lithium-ion batteries. However, co-intercalation of lithium-ions and solvent into graphite is considered undesirable because it can trigger the exfoliation of graphene layers and destroy the graphite crystal, resulting in poor cycle life. Here, it is demonstrated that the [lithium–solvent]+ intercalation does not necessarily cause exfoliation of the graphite electrode and can be remarkably reversible with appropriate solvent selection. First-principles calculations suggest that the chemical compatibility of the graphite host and [lithium–solvent]+ complex ion strongly affects the reversibility of the co-intercalation, and comparative experiments confirm this phenomenon. Moreover, it is revealed that [lithium–ether]+ co-intercalation of natural graphite electrode enables much higher power capability than normal lithium intercalation, without the risk of lithium metal plating, with retention of ≈87% of the theoretical capacity at current density of 1 A g−1. This unusual high rate capability of the co-intercalation is attributed to the (i) absence of the desolvation step, (ii) negligible formation of the solid–electrolyte interphase on graphite surface, and (iii) fast charge-transfer kinetics. This work constitutes the first step toward the utilization of fast and reversible [lithium–solvent]+ complex ion intercalation chemistry in graphite for rechargeable battery technology.

Abstract

SbSI and SbSeI materials, which are one-dimensional materials based on van der Waals bonds, have the same crystal structure and physical property changes because of their differences in lattice constants. Therefore, controlling the band structure of these materials in accordance with the mixing ratio of S and Se is important. In this study, SbSI, SbSeI, and alloys with intermediate compositions were synthesized, and their crystal and band structures were analyzed. Results showed a lattice strain proportional to the composition of the S–Se mixture, which was synthesized as a stable phase without phase separation. As S was substituted with Se, the band gap decreased. These results could be utilized in various fields of optoelectronic devices where Sb (S or Se) I series is primarily applied. Abstract

Applying soil amendments such as biochar has been proposed as a means to improve soil properties and reduce greenhouse gas emission from agricultural soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of biochar and straw application on rice yield, select soil properties, global warming potential (GWP), and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) over the 3-year period. The study treatments included control (CN), barley straw biochar (BC, 2,000 kg ha−1), barley straw (BS, 2,000 kg ha−1), and BC+BS (each 1,000 kg ha−1). During the rice-growing season, significant interactive effects of BC and BS treatment were observed in major soil properties. The average rice yields in BC, BS, and BC+BS treatments increased by 4.6%, 4.7%, and 18.7%, compared with CN treatment, respectively. Also, BC+BS treatment produced relatively stable yield during the 3-year study. Both BC and BS applications, either alone or in combination, lowered soil bulk density values compared to the CN treatment. Further, BC application produced a low total CH4 flux than other treatments. The total produced GWP over the 3 years occurred in the order: BS ≧ CN > BC+BS > BC treatment. These results clearly demonstrate the advantages of biochar and straw applications in improving rice yield and soil fertility while reducing GWP and GHGI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the context of contemporary wireless communication technologies, operational frequencies have considerably escalated. Consequently, the demand for dielectric ceramics with low dielectric constants and minimal losses has become imperative in the field. Thermally stable β-Ga2O3was synthesized by a simple chemical precipitation route followed by calcination, making it a promising candidate for microwave applications. The as-prepared β-Ga2O3maintained a pore structure with a width of 20.943 nm. Notably, the material exhibited early-stage sintering at relatively low temperatures, around 900 °C, due to these pores. The as-prepared β-Ga2O3ceramics exhibited outstanding dielectric properties, featuring a lower εrvalue of 3.2168 and a low dielectric loss of 0.000795 at 9.4 GHz. The lower εrcontributes to minimized time delays, while the low dielectric loss enhances the signal selectivity. These findings establish β-Ga2O3as a suitable material for electronic packaging in microwave applications.
