Global climate change influences the emergence, spread, and severity of rust diseases that affect crops and forests. In Korea, the rust diseases that affect Wisteria floribunda and its alternate host Corydalis incisa are rapidly spreading northwards. Through morphological, molecular, phylogenetic, and pathogenicity approaches, Neophysopella kraunhiae was identified as the causal agent, alternating between the two host plants to complete its life cycle. Using the maximum entropy model (Maxent) under shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), the results of this study suggest that by the 2050s, C. incisa is likely to extend its range into central Korea owing to climate shifts, whereas the distribution of W. floribunda is expected to remain unchanged nationwide. The generalized additive model revealed a significant positive correlation between the presence of C. incisa and the incidence of rust disease, highlighting the role that climate-driven expansion of this alternate host plays in the spread of N. kraunhiae. These findings highlight the profound influence of climate change on both the distribution of a specific plant and the disease a rust fungus causes, raising concerns about the potential emergence and spread of other rust pathogens with similar host dynamics. This paper investigates the use of English verb-argument constructions (VACs) in second language writing in light of usage-based constructionist approaches to language development. It employs a comprehensive list of VACs to analyze every sentence in 390 essays written by L2 learners of three levels, i.e., Low, Mid, and High, and examines the theoretical hypotheses that the repertoires of VACs expand along with L2 proficient profile and that individual VACs, albeit varying in their expansion patterns, compose a structured inventory based on constructional information. Results indicate that L2 learners of higher proficiency used significantly more types of VACs than those of lower proficiency. It is also found that significant expansions of individual VACs appeared at different L2 proficiency levels. For example, the use of [Verb + NP complement] construction significantly increased between Low and Mid, not between Mid and High, whereas the [Verb + Prepositional object] construction significantly expanded throughout the three proficiency levels. Tumour budding shows promise as a prognostic factor in various cancers, but its widespread application is hindered by the lack of large, validated studies and standardized criteria. This meta‐analysis aims to review and examine the prognostic role of tumour budding specifically in noncolorectal gastrointestinal and pancreatobiliary tract cancers, broadening our perspective on its clinical relevance. The literature review was conducted through PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception till 20 February 2023. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to assess the relation between tumour budding and clinicopathologic features, as well as overall survival. Each study was evaluated using the Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale and both heterogeneity and publication bias were analysed. In this meta‐analysis of 57 studies across various cancer types, multivariate HR revealed worse overall survival in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (HR 3.34 [95% CI 2.21–5.04]), gastric adenocarcinoma (2.03 [1.38–2.99]), pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (2.56 [2.02–3.25]), and biliary tract adenocarcinoma (3.11 [2.46–3.93]) with high‐grade tumour budding. Additionally, high‐grade tumour budding consistently correlated with adverse clinicopathological features, including lymph node metastasis, lymphovascular invasion, and distant metastasis without any observed inverse association. High heterogeneity was noted. Our study suggests that tumour budding is a valuable prognostic marker in various cancers. Recently, a previously unseen Exobasidium leaf blister disease was observed on Rhododendron mucronulatum in its natural habitat in Korea. The fungus associated with the disease was identified as Exobasidium miyabei based on morphological characteristics and two‐locus sequence analyses. Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)-associated gastric cancer (EBVaGC) is a distinct molecular subtype of gastric cancer. This study aims to investigate genomic and clinicopathological characteristics of EBVaGC according to the histological pattern. We retrospectively collected 18 specimens of surgically resected EBVaGCs. Whole-exome sequencing was performed for all cases. Moreover, PD-L1 expression and tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) percentage were investigated. Among 18 EBVaGCs, 10 cases were of intestinal histology, 3 were of poorly cohesive histology, and the remaining 5 were of gastric carcinoma with lymphoid stroma histology. Whole-exome sequencing revealed that EBVaGCs with intestinal histology harbored pathogenic mutations known to frequently occur in tubular or papillary adenocarcinoma, including TP53, KRAS, FBXW7, MUC6, ERBB2, CTNNB1, and ERBB2 amplifications. One patient with poorly cohesive carcinoma histology harbored a CDH1 mutation. Patients with EBVaGCs with intestinal or poorly cohesive carcinoma histology frequently harbored driver mutations other than PIK3CA, whereas those with EBVaGCs with gastric carcinoma with lymphoid stroma histology lacked other driver mutations. Moreover, the histological pattern of EBVaGCs was significantly associated with the levels of TILs (P = 0.005) and combined positive score (P = 0.027). This study investigated two artificial intelligence (AI) methods for automatically classifying dental implant diameter and length based on periapical radiographs. The first method, deep learning (DL), involved utilizing the pre-trained VGG16 model and adjusting the fine-tuning degree to analyze image data obtained from periapical radiographs. The second method, clustering analysis, was accomplished by analyzing the implant-specific feature vector derived from three key points coordinates of the dental implant using the k-means++ algorithm and adjusting the weight of the feature vector. DL and clustering model classified dental implant size into nine groups. The performance metrics of AI models were accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F1-score, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC). The final DL model yielded performances above 0.994, 0.950, 0.994, 0.974, 0.952, 0.994, and 0.975, respectively, and the final clustering model yielded performances above 0.983, 0.900, 0.988, 0.923, 0.909, 0.988, and 0.947, respectively. When comparing the AI model before tuning and the final AI model, statistically significant performance improvements were observed in six out of nine groups for DL models and four out of nine groups for clustering models based on AUC-ROC. Background: The deep learning-based nodule detection (DLD) system improves nodule detection performance of observers on chest radiographs (CXRs). However, its performance in different pulmonary nodule (PN) locations remains unknown. Methods: We divided the CXR intrathoracic region into non-danger zone (NDZ) and danger zone (DZ). The DZ included the lung apices, paramediastinal areas, and retrodiaphragmatic areas, where nodules could be missed. We used a dataset of 300 CXRs (100 normal and 200 abnormal images with 216 PNs [107 NDZ and 109 DZ nodules]). Eight observers (two thoracic radiologists [TRs], two non-thoracic radiologists [NTRs], and four radiology residents [RRs]) interpreted each radiograph with and without the DLD system. The metric of lesion localization fraction (LLF; the number of correctly localized lesions divided by the total number of true lesions) was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance according to the nodule location. Results: The DLD system demonstrated a lower LLF for the detection of DZ nodules (64.2) than that of NDZ nodules (83.2, p = 0.008). For DZ nodule detection, the LLF of the DLD system (64.2) was lower than that of TRs (81.7, p < 0.001), which was comparable to that of NTRs (56.4, p = 0.531) and RRs (56.7, p = 0.459). Nonetheless, the LLF of RRs significantly improved from 56.7 to 65.6 using the DLD system (p = 0.021) for DZ nodule detection. Conclusion: The performance of the DLD system was lower in the detection of DZ nodules compared to that of NDZ nodules. Nonetheless, RR performance in detecting DZ nodules improved upon using the DLD system. Critical relevance statement: Despite the deep learning-based nodule detection system's limitations in detecting danger zone nodules, it proves beneficial for less-experienced observers by providing valuable assistance in identifying these nodules, thereby advancing nodule detection in clinical practice. Leaf spots and smut‐like symptoms have been observed on the Canary Island date palm Phoenix canariensis in Korea since 2021. The fungus associated with the false smut was identified as Graphiola phoenicis based on the morphological characteristics and molecular sequence analysis of the large subunit region of the rDNA. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder that can diminish the quality of life of both children and adults in academic, occupational, and social contexts. The kynurenine pathway (KP) contains a set of enzymatic reactions involved in tryptophan (TRP) degradation. It is known to be associated with the risk of developing ADHD. This review will address the KP and underlying mechanism of inflammation in ADHD. Potential inflammatory biomarkers reported in the most recent studies are summarized. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for improving the survival of patients with lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In this study, we investigated whether the metabolomics analysis of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) from patients with lung cancer can provide biomarkers that can be used for noninvasive screening for lung cancer diagnosis. EBC samples obtained from patients with lung cancer (n = 20) and healthy individuals (n = 5) were subjected to high-resolution metabolomics (HRM) using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). Univariate analysis, with a false discovery rate (FDR), q = 0.05, and hierarchical clustering analysis were performed to discover significantly different metabolites between the healthy controls and patients with lung cancer. This was followed by the identification of the metabolites using the METLIN database. Pathway analysis based on the identified metabolites revealed that arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism was the most significantly affected pathway. Finally, 5-hydroxyicosatetraenoic acid (HETE) (m/z 343.2233, [M + Na]+), a metabolite involved in AA metabolism, was found to be significantly higher in patients with lung cancer than in healthy counterparts. In this paper, the equations of motion for modeling a spacecraft near an earth-threatening asteroid are proposed and studied for deflecting the asteroid using a gravity tractor that effectively tows the asteroid with mutual gravity attraction. The motion of the spacecraft is expressed by separation distance between the two objects, two Eulerian angles expressing the attitude of the spacecraft–asteroid system, and their derivatives; it is assumed that the spacecraft and asteroid are connected with a variable-length gravity tether. The motion of the spacecraft in an artificial halo orbit (AHO) is investigated using the proposed equations. These equations are suitable for the investigation because the spacecraft in the AHO moves in a circular orbit at a constant angular velocity and distance from the asteroid. The results indicate that the AHO is unstable, and a linear quadratic regulator will be required to control the spacecraft. Numerical simulation results suggest that the AHO–AHO transfer can be realized by employing a control law that linearizes the proposed equations. Severe burns may lead to a series of pathophysiological processes that result in death. Machine learning models that demonstrate prognostic performance can be used to build analytical models to predict postoperative mortality. This study aimed to identify machine learning models with the best diagnostic performance for predicting mortality in critically ill burn patients after burn surgery, and then compare them. Clinically important features for predicting mortality in patients after burn surgery were selected using a random forest (RF) regressor. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and classifier accuracy were evaluated to compare the predictive accuracy of different machine learning algorithms, including RF, adaptive boosting, decision tree, linear support vector machine, and logistic regression. A total of 731 patients met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The 90-day mortality of the critically ill burn patients after burn surgery was 27.1% (198/731). RF showed the highest AUC (0.922, 95% confidence interval = 0.902–0.942) among the models, with sensitivity and specificity of 66.2% and 93.8%, respectively. The most significant predictors for mortality after burn surgery as per machine learning models were total body surface area burned, red cell distribution width, and age. Zonate leaf spot of Ailanthus altissima presumed to be associated with an Ascochyta sp. has been observed in Korea where the species is naturalized. Using microscopic examinations of 22 specimens, deposited in the Korea University herbarium since 1989, and molecular phylogenetic analyses of three monoconidial isolates, we identified the isolates as Boeremia exigua. Pathogenicity of the fungus was confirmed by fulfilling Koch's postulates. These results indicated that the previous records of Ascochyta ailanthi and Ascochyta sp. on A. altissima should be re‐evaluated to confirm the identity of the species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rhytisma lonicericola was identified as a tar spot fungus on Lonicera sp. in 1902, and has since been recorded on several species of Lonicera in China, Japan, and Korea. Most of the previous records of R. lonicericola have been based on a list of disease occurrences in the absence of any formal morphological identification or molecular analyses. Using six newly obtained specimens collected in the past 2 years, we confirmed the tar spot fungus found on L. japonica in Korea as R. lonicericola based on morphological examinations and molecular phylogenetic analyses. This fungus was distinguished from R. xylostei, another tar spot fungus on Lonicera, by ascospore size and geographical distributions. Purpose: Sphingosine kinase is a lipid kinase that phosphorylates sphingosine to generate sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P). S1P regulates pancreatic islet β-cell endoplasmic reticulum stress and proliferation. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes share some key pathogenic processes. In this study, we investigated whether secretion of insulin and production of S1P is altered in alloxan and glucose-treated cells from the rat pancreatic β-cell line RIN-5F. Methods: RIN-5F cells were treated with 2 mM alloxan and 20 mM glucose for 6 hours or 24 hours before being evaluated by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blotting. Results: Insulin secretion and expression was higher in RIN-5F cells treated with glucose compared to control cells. In contrast, alloxan treatment did not affect insulin secretion and expression in RIN-5F cells. Interestingly, compared with normal control levels, S1P/EDG-5 was increased in both alloxan and glucosetreated pancreatic β cell than normal control. Mitogen-activated protein kinase/ extracellular signal-regulated kinase (MAPK/ERK) inhibition strongly decreased the expression of insulin and S1P in glucose- or alloxan-treated RIN-5F cells. Conclusion: We observe that production of S1P is increased in both diabetic cell models. In addition, MAPK/ERK signaling regulates secretion of insulin and S1P expression in pancreatic β-cells. Purpose: Although immune-checkpoint inhibitors have become a new therapeutic option for recurrent/metastatic non-small cell lung cancers (R/M-NSCLC), its clinical benefit in the real-world is still unclear. Methods: We investigated 1181 Korean patients with programmed death-1 ligand 1 (PD-L1)-positive [tumor proportion score (TPS) ≥ 10% by the SP263 assay or ≥ 50% by the 22C3 assay] R/M-NSCLC treated with pembrolizumab or nivolumab after failure of platinum-based chemotherapy. Results: The median age was 67 years, 13% of patients had ECOG-PS ≥ 2, and 27% were never-smokers. Adenocarcinoma was predominant (61%) and 18.1% harbored an EGFR activating mutation or ALK rearrangement. Pembrolizumab and nivolumab were administered to 51.3% and 48.7, respectively, and 42% received them beyond the third-line chemotherapy. Objective response rate (ORR) was 28.6%. Pembrolizumab group showed numerically higher ORR (30.7%) than the nivolumab group (26.4%), but it was comparable with that of the nivolumab group having PD-L1 TPS ≥ 50% (32.4%). Median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were 2.9 (95% CI 0–27.9) and 10.7 months (95% CI 0–28.2), respectively. In multivariable analysis, concordance of TPS ≥ 50% in both PD-L1 assays and the development of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) were two significant predictors of better ORR, PFS, and OS. EGFR mutation could also predict significantly worse OS outcomes. Conclusion: The real-world benefit of later-line anti-PD1 antibodies was comparable to clinical trials in patients with R/M-NSCLC, although patients generally were more heavily pretreated and had poorer ECOG-PS. Mitochondria may be transferred from cell to cell in the central nervous system and this process may help defend neurons against injury and disease. But how mitochondria maintain their functionality during the process of release into extracellular space remains unknown. Here, we report that mitochondrial protein O-GlcNAcylation is a critical process to support extracellular mitochondrial functionality. Activation of CD38-cADPR signaling in astrocytes robustly induced protein O-GlcNAcylation in mitochondria, while oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation showed transient and mild protein modification. Blocking the endoplasmic reticulum – Golgi trafficking with Brefeldin A or slc35B4 siRNA reduced O-GlcNAcylation, and resulted in the secretion of mitochondria with decreased membrane potential and mtDNA. Finally, loss-of-function studies verified that O-GlcNAc-modified mitochondria demonstrated higher levels of neuroprotection after astrocyte-to-neuron mitochondrial transfer. Collectively, these findings suggest that post-translational modification by O-GlcNAc may be required for supporting the functionality and neuroprotective properties of mitochondria released from astrocytes. A fungus of the genus Kordyana, found on leaves of Commelina communis and C. minor exhibiting white smut-like symptoms, was identified as Kordyana commelinae based on morphological characteristics and two rDNA sequence analyses. We report the novel occurrence of the genus Kordyana in Korea and the association of K. commelinae with the host plant species. Purpose: Although immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have emerged as therapeutic options for recurrent and/or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M-HNSCC), concerns have been raised on exceptional acceleration of tumor growth during treatment with ICIs, a condition described as hyperprogressive disease (HPD). This study examined the incidence, potential predictors, and clinical impact of HPD in R/M-HNSCC. Methods: We retrospectively collected data of patients with R/M-HNSCC treated with ICIs between January 2013 and June 2018 from 11 medical centers in Korea. HPD was defined as tumor growth kinetics ratio (TGKr) > 2, which was calculated by comparing TGK on ICIs with that before treatment with ICIs. Results: Of 125 patients, 68 (54.4%) obtained progressive disease as their best responses (progressors). HPD was identified in 18 (26.5% of progressors, 14.4% of total) patients. Relatively younger age, primary tumor of oral cavity, and previous locoregional irradiation were significant predictors of HPD according to multivariable analysis (p = 0.040, 0.027, and 0.015, respectively). Compared to patients without HPD, patients with HPD had significantly shorter median progression-free survival (PFS) (1.2 vs. 3.4 months, p < 0.001) and overall survival (OS) (3.4 vs. 10.7 months, p = 0.047). However, interestingly, HPD did not significantly affect the therapeutic benefit of post-ICIs chemotherapy. Conclusions: Younger patients with oral cavity cancer or prior treatment with locoregional radiotherapy could be regarded potential risk groups for HPD in patients with R/M-HNSCC treated with ICIs. Although HPD could consistently predict poorer survival outcomes, patients who experienced HPD with ICIs should not be excluded from the subsequent salvage chemotherapy treatments. Rust disease poses a major threat to global agriculture and forestry. It is caused by types of Pucciniales, which often require alternate hosts for their life cycles. Nyssopsora cedrelae was previously identified as a rust pathogen on Toona sinensis in East and Southeast Asia. Although this species had been reported to be autoecious, completing its life cycle solely on T. sinensis, we hypothesized that it has a heteroecious life cycle, requiring an alternate host, since the spermogonial and aecial stages on Aralia elata, a plant native to East Asia, are frequently observed around the same area where N. cedrelae causes rust disease on T. sinensis. Upon collecting rust samples from both A. elata and T. sinensis, we confirmed that the rust species from both tree species exhibited matching internal transcribed spacer (ITS), large subunit (LSU) rDNA, and cytochrome oxidase subunit III (CO3) mtDNA sequences. Through cross-inoculations, we verified that aeciospores from A. elata produced a uredinial stage on T. sinensis. This study is the first report to clarify A. elata as an alternate host for N. cedrelae, thus providing initial evidence that the Nyssopsora species exhibits a heteroecious life cycle. Topical corticosteroids (TCs) are widely used to treat dermatological conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It can be a safe and effective treatment when used appropriately. However, misguided information and corticosteroid phobia appear to contribute to inadequate adherence to therapy, leading to unsatisfactory treatment outcomes. Therefore, community pharmacists (CPs) are in a prime position to inform patients about the appropriate use of medicine. The aim of this study was to examine how the knowledge and perceptions of CPs, as well as other factors, associate CPs' patient counseling practice around the use of TCs. A structured, validated questionnaire was distributed to CPs in the Republic of Korea, and additional focus group discussions were implemented to obtain a deeper understanding of the survey findings. We analyzed the survey results by applying a modified knowledge-perception-practice model. In addition, we used path analysis to validate the model and assessed how knowledge level and perceptions of barriers affect CPs' counseling behavior. We ran a multiple regression to identify factors that associate CPs' practice levels. A total of 1018 surveys were analyzed. In general, respondents had sufficient knowledge to provide appropriate patient counseling on TC use. An increase in knowledge level positively associated the quality of practice, and more knowledge increased the perception of barriers that negatively associated patient counseling. Location in rural areas and pharmacists' perception of counseling barriers negatively associated the quality of practice. A higher level of knowledge, training in ADEs, higher proportion of OTC TC sales, and increased time for counseling positively associated the quality of practice. Therefore, minimizing barriers such as negative perceptions is very important in facilitating CPs' counseling practice around TC use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: With increasing number of patients undergoing spine surgery, the spinal epidural hemorrhage (SEH) has become a growing concern. However, current studies on SEH rely on case reports or observations from a single center. Our study attempted to demonstrate the incidence rate and risk factors of SEH using a national dataset.Methods: A total of 17,549 spine surgery cases from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service National Inpatient Sample of 2014 were analyzed. After evaluating the incidence of SEH based on severe cases requiring reoperation, a univariate comparison was performed. Variables found to be significant were included in a multivariable analysis model to determine the risk factors.Results: The incidence of SEH was found to be 1.15% in Korean population, and there were no severe SEH cases. Our analysis confirmed the previous findings that lumbar surgery, intraoperative blood loss, prolonged surgical time, high blood pressure, use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and concurrent bleeding factors are the risk factors of SEH. Anterior approach showed a protective effect. Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) does not regress spontaneously and most patients complain of cosmetic discomfort. This study presents the results of treatment of XP using 1,444 nm Nd:YAG laser. We aim to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a 1,444 nm Nd:YAG laser in XP. Twenty-eight patients with XP treated with 1,444 nm Nd:YAG laser were analyzed retrospectively. A physician scored the results based on the reduction of the initial lesion area under six categories. The results were scored as follows: no effect (0% clearing of xanthelasma area), some response (1–24% clearing), moderate response (25–49% clearing), marked response (50–74% clearing), satisfactory result (75-99% clearing), and excellent result (100% clearing). Twelve patients (42.8%) showed excellent clearance and 10 patients (35.7%) had clearance greater than 75%. Overall, 24 patients (85.7%) showed improvement higher than 50%. Half of the patients (14 patients) ended the treatment with satisfactory results with one treatment session. Including seven patients who ended the treatment after two laser sessions, 21 patients (75%) reported satisfactory results and ended the treatment after 1 to 2 laser sessions. Invasive fungal infections caused by Cyberlindnera fabianii have recently increased. However, biochemical kits such as API 20 C AUX and Vitek-2C have misidentified this species as other Candida spp. such as C. pelliculosa or C. utilis due to no information of Cy. fabianii in yeast database. During our 2016–2017 surveys, eleven isolates of Cy. fabianii were obtained in International St. Mary's Hospital in Korea. Here, we describe its morphological and molecular characteristics and tested its antifungal susceptibility against nine antifungal agents. The sequences of the ITS region and the D1/D2 region of LSU revealed 100% identity with the sequences of Cy. fabianii. In comparison with the results from MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, we found that Cy. fabianii can be distinguished from other species. In antifungal susceptibility test, voriconazole and echinocandins exhibited good antifungal activities against the majority of Cy. fabianii isolates despite the absence of standard criteria. Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis) is a major crop that is widely cultivated, especially in Korea, Japan, and China. With the advent of next generation sequencing technology, the cost and time required for sequencing have decreased and the development of genome research accelerated. Genome sequencing of Chinese cabbage was completed in 2011 using the variety Chiifu-401-42, and since then the genome has been continuously updated. In the present study, we conducted whole-genome sequencing of Chinese cabbage inbred line CT001, a line widely used in traditional or molecular breeding, to improve the accuracy of genetic polymorphism analysis. The constructed CT001 pseudomolecule represented 85.4% (219.8 Mb) of the Chiifu reference genome, and a total of 38,567 gene models were annotated using RNA-Seq analysis. In addition, the spontaneous mutation rate of CT001 was estimated by resequencing DNA obtained from individual plants after sexual propagation for six generations to estimate the naturally occurring variations. An 82-year-old man with diabetes was admitted to the emergency department with a third-degree burn on his left leg. The deep swab specimen from his left leg was cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar without cycloheximide and incubated at 25 °C for 5 days. On the basis of morphological characteristics and multigene phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA and partial fragments of beta-tubulin and translation elongation factor 1-alpha, the causal agent of fungal skin infection was identified as Bisifusarium delphinoides, which was newly introduced by accommodating a Fusarium dimerum species complex. Thus, we describe here the first case of skin infection caused by B. delphinoides on a burn patient with diabetes mellitus based on morphological observation and molecular analysis. Data regarding the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after spine surgery are scarce. Identifying ideal candidates for pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis and balancing the risk of thromboembolic complications against the risk of permanent neurologic deficits from a spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) are difficult. Even guidelines cannot suggest the standard of thromboprophylaxis. This study aimed to identify the incidence of and risk factors for VTE after spine surgery in the Korean population. In addition, the rate of pharmacoprophylaxis and the incidence of SEH after spine surgery were analyzed. The study cohort was generated by extracting patients with disease codes of spine surgery and VTE from the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service National Inpatient Sample in 2014. After analyzing the incidence of VTE after spine surgery, a univariate comparison was performed to examine the possible relationship between the incidence of VTE and the independent variable. Variables found to be significant were included in a multivariable analysis model for further analysis. The incidence of VTE was 2.09% among all 21,261 patients who had spine surgery, and prophylaxis was applied to 7.89% of all patients who had spine surgery. Comorbidities and surgery-related risk factors were venous disease, cancer, respiratory disease, prolonged surgery hours, and increased total blood loss. Hospital-related risk factors were the location and hospital size. On the basis of the incidence of VTE and the risk factors, more active prophylaxis is suggested for patients in the Korean population who undergo spine surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Based on an exceptionally durable response to pemetrexed observed in some patients with metastatic NSCLC, the predictive value of pemetrexed sensitivity to outcomes of subsequent systemic treatment was investigated. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the patients with metastatic non-squamous NSCLC treated with pemetrexed monotherapy as their first- or second-line chemotherapy between November 2006 and February 2015. Good (top 5% longest) and poor responders (bottom 12% shortest) were defined according to the duration of pemetrexed maintenance. The first and second post-pemetrexed (PP) systemic treatments were defined as PP1 and PP2 therapies, respectively, to define their progression-free survivals (PFS) as PFS1 and PFS2. Results: In a total of 100 patients, 86% of patients received pemetrexed as their second-line chemotherapy, and 34% were classified as good responders. Good and poor responder groups showed 20.5 months and 0.7 months of the median duration of responses, respectively. PP1 and PP2 therapies were done in 74% and 41.9% of patients after failure to pemetrexed. To our surprise, disease control rate (DCR) was significantly higher in the good responder group than poor responder group (69.6% vs 37.3%, p = 0.010) in patients treated with PP1 therapy, and median PFS1 was also significantly longer (5.2 vs 2.2 months, p < 0.01) regardless of the type of subsequent systemic treatment. Meanwhile, pemetrexed sensitivity did not affect DCR or PFS of patients who received PP2 therapies. Conclusions: Patients who achieved durable response to pemetrexed might obtain greater therapeutic benefits from subsequent systemic treatment in metastatic non-squamous NSCLC without targets, which could potentiate more effective post-pemetrexed treatment strategy. Background: Cryolipolysis is a noninvasive method for the selective reduction of subcutaneous fat. The abdomen and flank area are most commonly treated sites and now the treatment efficacy became the important issue. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of double stacking cryolipolysis treatment with the novel contoured applicator for abdominal fat reduction. Materials and methods: 12 healthy Korean were treated using cryolipolysis contact device. The device was applied on participant's left lower abdomen. Performance was held for 35 minutes and immediately repeated the second performance. The right abdomen was left untreated. Participants were examined with high resolution ultrasound and the depth of subcutaneous fat layer was measured initially and 8 weeks after the sessions. Any adverse events were assessed during the entire study period. Results: The subjective reduction of abdominal fat was noted in most participants. No serious adverse events was reported. Reduction of subcutaneous fat layer depth was confirmed in high resolution ultrasound after 8 weeks of treatment. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that abdominal fat can be reduced effectively by the novel cryolipolysis applicator. Abstract The use of a highly aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheet as a multifunctional constituent for liquid crystal (LC) displays and electro-optic LC applications is assessed. The CNT sheet can perform a dual function: one is an alignment layer for LCs, replacing the commonly used rubbed polyimide film, and the other is a transparent conductive layer, taking the place of indium tin oxide. The hydrophobic treatment improved the adhesion quality between aligned CNT bundles and the glass substrate, which helps to preserve the inherently aligned nanogroove morphology of transparent CNT sheets. The test LC display cells, comprising 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl molecules sandwiched between CNT-sheet-on-glass substrates, demonstrate the operation characteristics comparable to that of the conventional cell under temperature variation and ac electric field of 1 kHz. The results offer a possibility of deploying multifunctional CNT-sheet alignment layers in LC-based devices, especially in the future flexible display applications. A fusion gene coding for trehalose-6-phosphate synthase/phosphatase (TPSP) derived from Escherichia coli was introduced into tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Joyful) to generate overexpressing lines and enhance the level of trehalose in the seeds. Trehalose has been implicated in tolerance to abiotic stress in plants, so the response to heat stress of seeds from the transgenic lines and seeds from wild-type plants were compared. Wild-type heat-treated seeds had a germination rate of 17%, while four transgenic lines had germination rates over 50% following heat stress. In one heat-treated transgenic line, 100% of the seeds germinated, and therefore had a germination rate six times that of seeds from wild-type plants. Moreover, quantitative PCR revealed that the expression of diverse genes that respond to heat stress was enhanced in TPSP transgenic seeds compared to wild-type seeds 150 min after the onset of heat stress. The enhanced germination rate and expression of these genes in the transgenic seeds were essentially mimicked in wild-type seeds treated with 1 mM exogenous trehalose. Therefore, accumulated trehalose and associated metabolites may act as signaling molecules that enhance the expression of heat stress-responsive genes and confer heat-stress tolerance to seeds. Pulmonary artery sarcoma (PAS) is a rare but lethal malignant neoplasm that often mimics pulmonary artery embolism. However, owing to its rarity as well as fatality, there has been no firm consensus with regard to the standard diagnostic tool. We evaluate the feasibility of endovascular catheter biopsy as a diagnostic modality for PAS. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with histologically confirmed PAS between 2000 and 2016 at Asan Medical Center. Among a total of 25 patients with PAS, 5 patients underwent endovascular catheter biopsy and 3 of them were successfully diagnosed with PAS, while 2 patients underwent either endobronchial ultrasonography–transbronchial needle aspiration or surgical biopsy after failure of endovascular biopsy. There were no acute or fatal complications of endovascular catheter biopsy such as bleeding or pulmonary infarction. DJ-1 (PARK7) has been reported to be causative gene of Parkinson disease and also an oncogene. A loss in DJ-1 function can lead to cell death in neurodegenerative disease, or a gain of it can cause unregulated cell survival in cancer, respectively. DJ-1 protein is known to be expressed mainly in trophoblastic cells in the placenta with increased expression in the first trimester compared to later in term. However, its role in trophoblast regulation remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of DJ-1 regulation on a first trimester extravillous trophoblast cell line, HTR-8/SVneo. The effect of DJ-1 downregulation induced by small-interfering RNA on cell apoptosis, migration, and the pathway to regulate the cell function was assessed. Data of this study showed that DJ-1 downregulation increased apoptosis and reduced migration by regulating matrix metalloproteinase 2 and matrix metalloproteinase 9 in HTR-8/SVneo cells under both ambient and oxidative stress. Changes in cell function were demonstrated to be at least partly dependent on the AKT/S6 kinase beta-1 (S6K1) pathway. The occurrence of previously unknown tar‐spot disease on Salix koriyanagi was observed during surveys for forest disease outbreaks in Korea. The fungus associated with tar‐spot disease was identified as Rhytisma filamentosum based on morphological characteristics of the fungus and molecular sequencing of the ITS and 28S rDNA regions of two samples. One of the advantages that drive nanosatellite development is the potential of multi-point observation through constellation operation. However, constellation deployment of nanosatellites has been a challenge, as thruster operations for orbit maneuver were limited due to mass, volume, and power. Recently, a de-orbiting mechanism using magnetic torquer interaction with space plasma has been introduced, so-called plasma drag. As no additional hardware nor propellant is required, plasma drag has the potential in being used as constellation deployment method. In this research, a novel constellation deployment method using plasma drag is proposed. Orbit decay rate of the satellites in a constellation is controlled using plasma drag in order to achieve a desired phase angle and phase angle rate. A simplified 1D problem is formulated for an elementary analysis of the constellation deployment time. Numerical simulations are further performed for analytical analysis assessment and sensitivity analysis. Analytical analysis and numerical simulation results both agree that the constellation deployment time is proportional to the inverse square root of magnetic moment, the square root of desired phase angle and the square root of satellite mass. CubeSats ranging from 1 to 3 U (1–3 kg nanosatellites) are examined in order to investigate the feasibility of plasma drag constellation on nanosatellite systems. The mobility of heavy metalloids including As, Sb, Mo, W, and Cr in soil was investigated under both reducing and oxidizing conditions. The effects of soil mineralogy and the presence of competitive anions were studied as important factors affecting the mobility of these contaminants. Batch experiments conducted with the addition of oxidized and fresh FeS exhibited enhanced sorption rates for As and W under oxidizing conditions, and for Mo under reducing conditions. The inhibitory effect of phosphate on the sorption rates was most apparent for As and Mo under both oxidizing and reducing conditions, while only a small phosphate effect was observed for Sb and W. For Sb and W mobility, pH was determined to be the most important controlling factor. The results of long-term batch experiments revealed that differences in the mobility of metalloids, particularly As, were also influenced by microbial activity in the oxidizing and reducing conditions. β-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) plays a role in generating amyloid β (Aβ), thus playing a major part early in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). BACE1 has emerged as a crucial therapeutic target for decreasing the Aβ concentration in the AD brain. To explore natural BACE1 inhibitors, the present study concentrated on isoflavones, including genistein, formononetin, glycitein, daidzein, and puerarin. In this study, in vitro anti-AD activities were assessed using BACE1 inhibition assays, as well as enzyme kinetic predictions. Molecular docking analysis was applied to design potential BACE1 inhibitors. Among the major isoflavones, genistein exerted a notable BACE1 inhibition through reversible noncompetitive mechanism, while other compounds were less potent against BACE1. The docking study revealed that genistein had negative binding energy (−8.5 kcal/mol) and was stably positioned in the allosteric domains of BACE1 residues. It interacted with important amino acid residues in BACE1, such as ASN37, GLN73, and TRP76, through hydrogen bonding. The results suggested that genistein may be beneficial for preventing and/or treating AD. Furthermore, it may provide potential guidelines for the design of new BACE1 inhibitors. Spinel crystalline lithium titanium oxide (Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 or LTO) has gained attention as a possible alternative material to graphite for use as anodes in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries due to its low volume expansion and dendrite-free long-term stability. However, the rate capability of LTO is limited by its low electronic conductivity, which results in a large polarization resistance between electrodes. In this study, we demonstrate a spray-drying-assisted carbon coating approach to synthesize LTO/C composites for enhanced lithium-insertion capacity and facilitated charge-discharge reaction kinetics. The thin carbon layer of LTO/C composite contributes to suppressing particle growth by forming passivating carbon layers. In addition to the decrease in particle size for short lithium-diffusion pathways, the highly conductive carbon layers reduce the interfacial resistance between the electrode and electrolyte by enhanced electrical conductivity. The electrochemical performances of the spray-drying-prepared LTO/C composite such as the specific capacity, cycle and rate capabilities, and impedance are compared with pristine LTO and carbon-coated LTO synthesized without spray-drying. The LTO/C prepared from glucose exhibits a 11.15% enhancement in rate characteristics of pristine LTO at 0.5 C after 100 cycles. These results indicate that the carbon coating layer promotes charge transfer and ion diffusion as well as provides a buffering effect for improved rate and cyclic capabilities. Background: Cryolipolysis is a noninvasive method for the selective reduction of fat, especially proven to be safe and effective in body contouring. There is a demand for reduction in submental fat, which is related not only with a favorable appearance but also with signs of aging.Objective: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of cryolipolysis for subcutaneous fat reduction in the submental area in Asians.Materials and methods: Ten healthy Koreans were treated using a cryolipolysis contact device (CoolMini applicator, Zeltiq Aesthetics). The device was applied on the participant’s neck twice via two lateral approaches. Patient’s body weight was measured, and photographs were taken at baseline and during the follow-up visit after 8 weeks. Participants were examined with ultrasound and the depth of the subcutaneous fat layer was measured.Results: The subjective reduction of submental fat was noted in most of the participants. Reduction of the subcutaneous fat layer depth was confirmed by ultrasound after 8 weeks of treatment.Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that submental fat can be safely and effectively reduced with use of a cryolipolysis applicator. Among the several components in Korean red ginseng, the saponin components are known to have various pharmacologic activities. The objective of this study was to evaluate therapeutic effects of saponin extracts from Korean red ginseng on endometriosis and to identify microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with saponin treatment. This is an in vitro study which used human endometrial stromal cells (HESCs) obtained from patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis and other benign conditions. Human endometrial stromal cells were treated with saponin extracts, and microarray profiling was performed. Human endometrial stromal cells were then transfected with miRNAs identified in the profiling. After the saponin extract treatment, the expression of caspase 3 was significantly increased in HESCs. Microarray profiling revealed several miRNAs that were differentially expressed, and miR-21-5p was further validated. Expression of miR-21-5p was significantly upregulated in the endometrium of patients with endometriosis, compared with controls. Transfection of a miR-21-5p inhibitor significantly increased caspase 3 expression in HESCs. The apoptotic potential of saponin extracts and the miR-21-5p inhibitor were further validated in HESCs using flow cytometry analysis. In conclusions, treatment with saponin extracts significantly decreased the expression of miR-21-5p in HESCs from patients with endometriosis. Inhibition of miR-21-5p effectively increased the apoptotic potential of HESCs. Induction of complete remission (CR) is imperative for long-term survival in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients regardless of transplantation eligibility. Hyper-CVAD chemotherapy is a widely-used frontline remission induction regimen for these patients. We conducted a pilot trial of frontline remission induction using daunorubicin-augmented hyper-CVAD regimen (hyper-CVDD) in adult ALL patients (n = 15). The CR rate after this modified regimen was 100% (n = 15). Twelve patients were able to proceed to allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation, two patients died before transplantation due to infection, and the remaining one who was ineligible for transplant due to her age received an additional five courses of consolidation chemotherapy. Overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) of the study patients was 61.0 and 47.5% at 3 years. OS and relapse-free survival of transplanted patients was 66.8 and 55.0% at 3 years. This pilot trial demonstrates the favorable efficacy of the hyper-CVDD chemotherapy as a frontline remission induction regimen. Further clinical trials using this regimen are warranted. Background: A blood pressure (BP) waveform contains various pieces of information related to respiratory variation. Systolic time interval (STI) reflects myocardial performance, and diastolic time interval (DTI) represents diastolic filling. This study examined whether respiratory variations of STI and DTI within radial arterial waveform are comparable to dynamic indices.Methods: During liver transplantation, digitally recorded BP waveform and stroke volume variation (SVV) were retrospectively analyzed. Beat-to-beat STI and DTI were extracted within each BP waveform, which were separated by dicrotic notch. Systolic time variation (STV) was calculated by the average of 3 consecutive respiratory cycles: [(STImax- STImin)/STImean]. Similar formula was used for diastolic time variation (DTV) and pulse pressure variation (PPV). Receiver operating characteristic analysis with area under the curve (AUC) was used to assess thresholds predictive of SVV ≥12% and PPV ≥12%.Results: STV and DTV showed significant correlations with SVV (r= 0.78 and r= 0.67, respectively) and PPV (r= 0.69 and r= 0.69, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic curves demonstrated that STV ≥11% identified to predict SVV ≥12% with 85.7% sensitivity and 89.3% specificity (AUC = 0.935; P< .001). DTV ≥11% identified to predict SVV ≥12% with 71.4% sensitivity and 85.7% specificity (AUC = 0.829; P< .001). STV ≥12% and DTV ≥11% identified to predict PPV ≥12% with an AUC of 0.881 and 0.885, respectively.Conclusion: Respiratory variations of STI and DTI derived from radial arterial contour have a potential to predict hemodynamic response as a surrogate for SVV or PPV. The biogeochemical reactions of dimethylarsinic acid (DMAs(V)) were investigated using simulated wetland systems in a laboratory. DMAs(V) was injected into the wetland water, and the As concentrations in the water, plants, and sediments were monitored. Aqueous and solid-phase As speciation was evaluated, and the results revealed that the DMAs(V) was completely transported to the sediments and plants. X-ray absorption spectroscopic measurement of the As in the sediment revealed that approximately 85–95% of As existed as inorganic As species, demonstrating the important role of microorganisms in the biogeochemical reaction of DMAs(V). The influences of microbes were further investigated in smaller batches under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The microbial batch results showed that DMAs(V) demethylation reduced the total aqueous As concentration, demonstrating that As(V) has higher affinity to wetland sediment than DMAs(V). The redox conditions were also revealed as an important controlling factor of the As reaction and, under anaerobic conditions, we observed the presence of the most toxic form of inorganic As(III) in the aqueous phase. Although this study reports one example from a specific wetland, the important roles of the redox conditions and microbial influences were identified from the comprehensive analysis of As speciation and mass balance. Due to its rapid development of resistance to nearly all arrays of acaricide, Tetranychus urticae is extremely hard to control using conventional acaricides. As an alternative control measure of acaricide-resistant mites, RNA interference (RNAi)-based method has recently been suggested. A double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) delivery method using multi-unit chambers was established and employed to screen the RNAi toxicity of 42 T. urticae genes. Among them, the dsRNA treatment of coatomer I (COPI) genes, such as coatomer subunit epsilon (COPE) and beta 2 (COPB2), resulted in high mortality [median lethal time (LT 50 ) = 89.7 and 120.3 h, respectively]. The transcript level of the COPE gene was significantly ( F 3 , 9 = 16.2, P = 0.001) reduced by up to 24% following dsRNA treatment, suggesting that the toxicity was likely mediated by the RNAi of the target gene. As a toxicity enhancement strategy, the recombinant dsRNA was generated by reciprocally recombining half-divided fragments of COPE and COPB2. The two recombinant dsRNAs exhibited higher toxicity than the respective single dsRNA treatments as determined by LT 50 values (79.2 and 81.5 h, respectively). This finding indicates that the recombination of different genes can enhance RNAi toxicity and be utilized to generate synthetic dsRNA with improved RNAi efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Graphene oxide (GO) particles in aqueous dispersions can form liquid crystal (LC) phases at extremely low concentrations due to the extremely high aspect ratio of the flakes and noticeably, they possess an extremely large Kerr coefficient attractive for low power consumption electro-optic devices. Reduced graphene does not easily form LC phases in water due to its hydrophobic nature but here we show that stable dispersions of reduced graphene oxide can be realized with surfactants and that they exhibit birefringence upon shearing as well as under application of electric fields. The performance of the system is largely superior to GO LC possessing longer time stability and drastically improved electro-optic properties with an induced birefringence twice as large at the same field strength thanks to the almost recovery of graphene properties upon reduction. A previously unknown leaf spot disease was observed on Virginia creeper ( Parthenocissus quinquefolia) vines in Seoul, Korea. Affected plants exhibited leaf spots and discoloration, resulting in leaf blight and premature defoliation. The causal agent of the disease was identified as Passalora ampelopsidis by comparing morphological characteristics and analyzing the internal transcribed spacer region of the rDNA. Pathogenicity tests were conducted twice with the same results, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Passalora leaf spot on Virginia creeper vines was first recorded in the United States in 1878. Recent reports of Passalora leaf spots on Virginia creeper vines in 2005 in Germany, in 2012 in China and now in Korea indicate the prevalence of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In August 2013, sooty mould was observed on Chinese hibiscus ( Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) in a propagation nursery in Seoul, Korea. The sooty mould initially developed at the junction between the leaf blade and leaf petiole and then dispersed along the vein on the abaxial surface. The fungal growth pattern on the plants was quite different from general sooty moulds growing on honeydew secreted by insects on the plants. On the basis of the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis using the internal transcribed spacer r DNA, this fungus was identified as Leptoxyphium kurandae. A pathogenicity test was carried out to fulfil Koch's postulates. Through field observation and a pathogenicity test, we found an association between the sooty mould and extrafloral nectaries. To our knowledge, this is the first report of sooty mould caused by L. kurandae on the extrafloral nectaries of H. rosa-sinensis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zonate leaf spots and severe defoliation were observed on Manchurian apricot ( Prunus mandshurica) growing in a humid location in Korea from 2011 through 2013. The main symptoms included greyish green to brownish grey and zonate leaf spots without border lines, which mostly led to premature defoliation. The morphological characteristics of the causal agent were consistent with Hinomyces pruni. Identification was supported by analysing the sequence of the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA from an isolate. The pathogenicity of the isolate was confirmed by artificial inoculation. This is the first report of zonate leaf spot caused by H. pruni on Manchurian apricot globally as well as in Korea.
