To ensure coherent signal processing across distributed Access Points (APs) in Cell-Free Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (CF-mMIMO) systems, a fronthaul connection between the APs and a Central Processor (CP) is imperative. We consider a fronthaul network employing parallel radio stripes. In this system, APs are grouped into multiple segments where APs within each segment are sequentially connected through a radio stripe. This fronthaul topology strikes a balance between standard star and bus topologies, which deploy parallel or serial connections of all APs. Our focus lies in designing the uplink signal processing for a CF-mMIMO system with parallel radio stripes. We tackle the challenge of finite-capacity fronthaul links by addressing the design of In-Network Processing (INP) strategies at APs. These strategies involve linearly combining received signals and compressing the combining output for fronthaul transmission, aiming to maximize the sum-rate performance. Given the high complexity and the stringent requirement for global Channel State Information (CSI) in jointly optimizing INP strategies across all APs, we propose an efficient sequential design approach. This work investigates a collaborative sensing and data collection system in which multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) sense an area of interest and transmit images to a cloud server (CS) for processing. To accelerate the completion of sensing missions, including data transmission, the sensing task is divided into individual private sensing tasks for each UAV and a common sensing task that is executed by all UAVs to enable cooperative transmission. Unlike existing studies, we explore the use of an advanced cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network, which effectively manages inter-UAV interference. To further optimize wireless channel utilization, we propose a hybrid transmission strategy that combines time-division multiple access (TDMA), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), and cooperative transmission. The problem of jointly optimizing task splitting ratios and the hybrid TDMA-NOMA-cooperative transmission strategy is formulated with the objective of minimizing mission completion time. The optimization of cooperative beamforming vectors in cell-free massive MIMO (mMIMO) systems is presented where multi-antenna access points (APs) support downlink data transmission of multiple users. Albeit the successes of the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) algorithm and their variants, they lack careful investigations about computational complexity that scales with the number of antennas and APs. We propose a generalized and reduced WMMSE (G-R-WMMSE) approach whose complexity is significantly lower than conventional WMMSE. We partition the set of beamforming coefficients into subvectors, with each subvector corresponding to a specific AP. Such a partitioning approach decomposes the original WMMSE problem across individual APs. By leveraging the Lagrange duality analysis, a closed-form solution can be derived for each subproblem, which substantially reduces the computation burden. Additionally, we present a parallel execution of the proposed G-R-WMMSE with adaptive step sizes, aiming at further reducing the time complexity. A sequential fronthaul network, referred to as radio stripes, is a promising fronthaul topology of cell-free MIMO systems. In this setup, a single cable suffices to connect access points (APs) to a central processor (CP). Thus, radio stripes are more effective than conventional star fronthaul topology which requires dedicated cables for each of APs. Most of works on radio stripes focused on the uplink communication or downlink energy transfer. This work tackles the design of the downlink data transmission for the first time. The CP sends compressed information of linearly precoded signals to the APs on fronthaul. Due to the serial transfer on radio stripes, each AP has an access to all the compressed blocks which pass through it. Thus, an advanced compression technique, called Wyner-Ziv (WZ) compression, can be applied in which each AP decompresses all the received blocks to exploit them for the reconstruction of its desired precoded signal as side information. The problem of maximizing the sum-rate is tackled under the standard point-to-point (P2P) and WZ compression strategies. In the upcoming 6G era, multiple access (MA) will play an essential role in achieving high throughput performances required in a wide range of wireless applications. Since MA and interference management are closely related issues, the conventional MA techniques are limited in that they cannot provide near-optimal performance in universal interference regimes. Recently, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has been gaining much attention. RSMA splits an individual message into two parts: a common part, decodable by every user, and a private part, decodable only by the intended user. Each user first decodes the common message and then decodes its private message by applying successive interference cancellation (SIC). By doing so, RSMA not only embraces the existing MA techniques as special cases but also provides significant performance gains by efficiently mitigating inter-user interference in a broad range of interference regimes. In this article, we first present the theoretical foundation of RSMA. Subsequently, we put forth four key benefits of RSMA: spectral efficiency, robustness, scalability, and flexibility. This paper studies learning-based decentralized power control methods for cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where a central processor (CP) controls access points (APs) through fronthaul coordination. To determine the transmission policy of distributed APs, it is essential to develop a network-wide collaborative optimization mechanism. To address this challenge, we design a cooperative learning (CL) framework which manages computation and coordination strategies of the CP and APs using dedicated deep neural network (DNN) modules. To build a versatile learning structure, the proposed CL is carefully designed such that its forward pass calculations are independent of the number of APs. To this end, we adopt a parameter reuse concept which installs an identical DNN module at all APs. Consequently, the proposed CL trained at a particular configuration can be readily applied to arbitrary AP populations. Deep learning (DL) techniques have been intensively studied for the optimization of multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) downlink systems owing to the capability of handling nonconvex formulations. However, the fixed computation structure of existing deep neural networks (DNNs) lacks flexibility with respect to the system size, i.e., the number of antennas or users. This paper develops a bipartite graph neural network (BGNN) framework, a scalable DL solution designed for multi-antenna beamforming optimization. The MU-MISO system is first characterized by a bipartite graph where two disjoint vertex sets, each of which consists of transmit antennas and users, are connected via pairwise edges. These vertex interconnection states are modeled by channel fading coefficients. Thus, a generic beamforming optimization process is interpreted as a computation task over a weight bipartite graph. This approach partitions the beamforming optimization procedure into multiple suboperations dedicated to individual antenna vertices and user vertices. Separated vertex operations lead to scalable beamforming calculations that are invariant to the system size. The vertex operations are realized by a group of DNN modules that collectively form the BGNN architecture. Identical DNNs are reused at all antennas and users so that the resultant learning structure becomes flexible to the network size. Component DNNs of the BGNN are trained jointly over numerous MU-MISO configurations with randomly varying network sizes. As a result, the trained BGNN can be universally applied to arbitrary MU-MISO systems. This work studies federated learning (FL) over a fog radio access network, in which multiple internet-of-things (IoT) devices cooperatively learn a shared machine learning model by communicating with a cloud server (CS) through distributed access points (APs). Under the assumption that the fronthaul links connecting APs to CS have finite capacity, a rate-splitting transmission at IoT devices (IDs) is proposed which enables hybrid edge and cloud decoding of split uplink messages. The problem of completion time minimization for FL is tackled by optimizing the rate-splitting transmission and fronthaul quantization strategies along with training hyperparameters such as precision and iteration numbers. Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) for multi-user downlink operates by splitting the message for each user equipment (UE) into a private message and a set of common messages, which are simultaneously transmitted by means of superposition coding. The RSMA scheme can enhance throughput and connectivity as compared to conventional multiple access techniques by optimizing the rate-splitting ratios along with the corresponding downlink beamforming vectors. This work examines the impact of erroneous channel state information (CSI) on the performance of RSMA in cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. An efficient robust optimization algorithm is proposed by using closed-form lower bound expressions on the expected data rates. A cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is a promising cellular network, wherein densely deployed multi-antenna remote-radio-heads (RRHs) jointly serve many users using the same time-frequency resource. By extremely high signaling overheads for both channel state information (CSI) acquisition and data sharing at a baseband unit (BBU), finding a joint transmission strategy with a significantly reduced signaling overhead is indispensable to achieve the cooperation gain in practical C-RANs. In this paper, we present a novel sparse joint transmission (sparse-JT) method for C-RANs, where the number of transmit antennas per unit area is much larger than the active downlink user density. Considering the effects of noisy-and-incomplete CSI and the quantization errors in data sharing by a finite-rate fronthaul capacity, the key innovation of sparse-JT is to find a joint solution for cooperative RRH clusters, beamforming vectors, and power allocation to maximize a lower bound of the sum-spectral efficiency under the sparsity constraint of active RRHs. To find such a solution, we present a computationally efficient algorithm that guarantees to find a local-optimal solution for a relaxed sum-spectral efficiency maximization problem. Cooperative beamforming across access points (APs) and fronthaul quantization strategies are essential for cloud radio access network (C-RAN) systems. The nonconvexity of the C-RAN optimization problems, which is stemmed from per-AP power and fronthaul capacity constraints, requires high computational complexity for executing iterative algorithms. To resolve this issue, we investigate a deep learning approach where the optimization module is replaced with a well-trained deep neural network (DNN). An efficient learning solution is proposed which constructs a DNN to produce a low-dimensional representation of optimal beamforming and quantization strategies. This work studies the role of inter-user device-to-device (D2D) cooperation for improving physical-layer secret communication in multi-user downlink systems. It is assumed that there are out-of-band D2D channels, on each of which a selected legitimate user transmits an amplified version of the received downlink signal to other legitimate users. A key technical challenge for designing such systems is that eavesdroppers can overhear downlink as well as D2D cooperation signals. We tackle the problem of jointly optimizing the downlink precoding, artificial noise covariance, and amplification coefficients that maximize the minimum rate. An iterative alternating optimization algorithm is proposed based on the matrix fractional programming. Mobile cloud and edge computing protocols make it possible to offer computationally heavy applications to mobile devices via computational offloading from devices to nearby edge servers or more powerful, but remote, cloud servers. Previous work assumed that computational tasks can be fractionally offloaded at both cloud processor (CP) and at a local edge node (EN) within a conventional Distributed Radio Access Network (D-RAN) that relies on non-cooperative ENs equipped with one-way uplink fronthaul connection to the cloud. In this paper, we propose to integrate collaborative fractional computing across CP and ENs within a Cloud RAN (C-RAN) architecture with finite-capacity two-way fronthaul links. Accordingly, tasks offloaded by a mobile device can be partially carried out at an EN and the CP, with multiple ENs communicating with a common CP to exchange data and computational outcomes while allowing for centralized precoding and decoding. Unlike prior work, we investigate joint optimization of computing and communication resources, including wireless and fronthaul segments, to minimize the end-to-end latency by accounting for a two-way uplink and downlink transmission. Fog radio access networks (F-RANs), which consist of a cloud and multiple edge nodes (ENs) connected via fronthaul links, have been regarded as promising network architectures. The F-RAN entails a joint optimization of cloud and edge computing as well as fronthaul interactions, which is challenging for traditional optimization techniques. This paper proposes a Cloud-Enabled Cooperation-Inspired Learning (CECIL) framework, a structural deep learning mechanism for handling a generic F-RAN optimization problem. The proposed solution mimics cloud-aided cooperative optimization policies by including centralized computing at the cloud, distributed decision at the ENs, and their uplink-downlink fronthaul interactions. A group of deep neural networks (DNNs) are employed for characterizing computations of the cloud and ENs. The forwardpass of the DNNs is carefully designed such that the impacts of the practical fronthaul links, such as channel noise and signling overheads, can be included in a training step. As a result, operations of the cloud and ENs can be jointly trained in an end-to-end manner, whereas their real-time inferences are carried out in a decentralized manner by means of the fronthaul coordination. To facilitate fronthaul cooperation among multiple ENs, the optimal fronthaul multiple access schemes are designed. Training algorithms robust to practical fronthaul impairments are also presented. This paper investigates a learning solution for robust beamforming optimization in downlink multi-user systems. A base station (BS) identifies efficient multi-antenna transmission strategies only with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and its stochastic features. To this end, we propose a robust training algorithm where a deep neural network (DNN), which only accepts estimates and statistical knowledge of the perfect CSI, is optimized to fit to real-world propagation environment. Consequently, the trained DNN can provide efficient robust beamforming solutions based only on imperfect observations of the actual CSI. This letter studies deep learning (DL) approaches to optimize beamforming vectors in downlink multi-user multi-antenna systems that can be universally applied to arbitrarily given transmit power limitation at a base station. We exploit the sum power budget as side information so that deep neural networks (DNNs) can effectively learn the impact of the power constraint in the beamforming optimization. Consequently, a single training process is sufficient for the proposed universal DL approach, whereas conventional methods need to train multiple DNNs for all possible power budget levels. Over-the-air computation (AirComp) is an efficient solution to enable federated learning on wireless channels. AirComp assumes that the wireless channels from different devices can be controlled, e.g., via transmitter-side phase compensation, in order to ensure coherent on-air combining. Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) can provide an alternative, or additional, means of controlling channel propagation conditions. This work studies the advantages of deploying IRSs for AirComp systems in a large-scale cloud radio access network (C-RAN). In this system, worker devices upload locally updated models to a parameter server (PS) through distributed access points (APs) that communicate with the PS on finite-capacity fronthaul links. The problem of jointly optimizing the IRSs' reflecting phases and a linear detector at the PS is tackled with the goal of minimizing the mean squared error (MSE) of a parameter estimated at the PS. This work studies the uplink of a multi-tenant cloud radio access network (C-RAN) system with spectrum pooling. In the system, each operator has a cloud processor (CP) connected to a set of proprietary radio units (RUs) through finite-capacity fronthaul links. The uplink spectrum is divided into private and shared subbands, and all the user equipments (UEs) of the participating operators can simultaneously transmit signals on the shared subband. To mitigate inter-operator interference on the shared subband, the CPs of the participating operators can exchange compressed uplink baseband signals on finite-capacity backhaul links. This work tackles the problem of jointly optimizing bandwidth allocation, transmit power control and fronthaul compression strategies. In the optimization, we impose that the inter-operator privacy loss be limited by a given threshold value. An iterative algorithm is proposed to find a suboptimal solution based on the matrix fractional programming approach. In modern implementations of Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN), the fronthaul transport network will often be packet-based and it will have a multi-hop architecture built with general-purpose switches using network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN). This paper studies the joint design of uplink radio and fronthaul transmission strategies for a C-RAN with a packet-based fronthaul network. To make an efficient use of multiple routes that carry fronthaul packets from remote radio heads (RRHs) to cloud, as an alternative to more conventional packet-based multiroute reception or coding, a multiple description coding (MDC) strategy is introduced that operates directly at the level of baseband signals. MDC ensures an improved quality of the signal received at the cloud in conditions of low network congestion, i.e., when more fronthaul packets are received within a tolerated deadline. In a cell-free cloud radio access network (C-RAN) architecture, uplink channel estimation is carried out by a centralized baseband processing unit (BBU) connected to distributed remote radio heads (RRHs). When the RRHs have multiple antennas and limited radio front-end resources, the design of uplink channel estimation is faced with the challenges posed by reduced radio frequency (RF) chains and one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at the RRHs. This work tackles the problem of jointly optimizing the pilot sequences and the pre-RF chains analog combiners with the goal of minimizing the sum of mean squared errors (MSEs) of the estimated channel vectors at the BBU. The problem formulation models the impact of the ADC operation by leveraging Bussgang's theorem. An efficient solution is developed by means of an iterative alternating optimization algorithm. This work studies the optimization of rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) transmission technique for a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) downlink system. Main idea of RSMA is to split the message for each user equipment (UE) to private and common messages and perform superposition coding at transmitters so as to enable flexible decoding at receivers. It is challenging to implement ideal RSMA scheme particularly when there are many UEs, since the number of common signals exponentially increases with the number of UEs. An efficient RSMA scheme is hence proposed that uses a linearly increasing number of common signals whose decoding UEs are selected using hierarchical clustering. We consider a Fog Radio Access Network (F-RAN) with a Base Band Unit (BBU) in the cloud and multiple cache-enabled enhanced Remote Radio Heads (eRRHs). The system aims at delivering contents on demand with minimal average latency from a time-varying library of popular contents. Information about uncached requested files can be transferred from the cloud to the eRRHs by following either backhaul or fronthaul modes. The backhaul mode transfers fractions of the requested files, while the fronthaul mode transmits quantized baseband samples as in Cloud-RAN (C-RAN). The backhaul mode allows the caches of the eRRHs to be updated, which may lower future delivery latencies. In contrast, the fronthaul mode enables cooperative C-RAN transmissions that may reduce the current delivery latency. Taking into account the trade-off between current and future delivery performance, this paper proposes an adaptive selection method between the two delivery modes to minimize the long-term delivery latency. Assuming an unknown and time-varying popularity model, the method is based on model-free Reinforcement Learning (RL). Hybrid beamforming is known to be a cost-effective and wide-spread solution for a system with large-scale antenna arrays. This work studies the optimization of the analog and digital components of the hybrid beamforming solution for remote radio heads (RRHs) in a downlink cloud radio access network (C-RAN) architecture. Digital processing is carried out at a baseband processing unit (BBU) in the "cloud" and the precoded baseband signals are quantized prior to transmission to the RRHs via finite-capacity fronthaul links. In this system, we consider two different channel state information (CSI) scenarios: 1) ideal CSI at the BBU 2) imperfect effective CSI. Optimization of digital beamforming and fronthaul quantization strategies at the BBU as well as analog radio frequency (RF) beamforming at the RRHs is a coupled problem, since the effect of the quantization noise at the receiver depends on the precoding matrices. The resulting joint optimization problem is examined with the goal of maximizing the weighted downlink sum-rate and the network energy efficiency. Fronthaul capacity and per-RRH power constraints are enforced along with constant modulus constraint on the RF beamforming matrices. For the case of perfect CSI, a block coordinate descent scheme is proposed based on the weighted minimum-mean-square-error approach by relaxing the constant modulus constraint of the analog beamformer. Also, we present the impact of imperfect CSI on the weighted sum-rate and network energy efficiency performance, and the algorithm is extended by applying the sample average approximation. Numerical results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and show that the proposed algorithm is robust to estimation errors.

Spectrum pooling allows multiple operators, or tenants, to share the same frequency bands. This work studies the optimization of spectrum pooling for the downlink of a multi-tenant Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) system in the presence of inter-tenant privacy constraints. The spectrum available for downlink transmission is partitioned into private and shared subbands, and the participating operators cooperate to serve the user equipments (UEs) on the shared subband. The network of each operator consists of a cloud processor (CP) that is connected to proprietary radio units (RUs) by means of finite-capacity fronthaul links. In order to enable interoperator cooperation, the CPs of the participating operators are also connected by finite-capacity backhaul links. Inter-operator cooperation may hence result in loss of privacy. Fronthaul and backhaul links are used to transfer quantized baseband signals. Standard quantization is considered first. Then, a novel approach based on the idea of correlating quantization noise signals across RUs of different operators is proposed to control the trade-off between distortion at UEs and inter-operator privacy. The problem of optimizing the bandwidth allocation, precoding, and fronthaul/backhaul compression strategies is tackled under constraints on backhaul and fronthaul capacity, as well as on per-RU transmit power and inter-operator privacy. This work studies the advantages of coded multicasting for the downlink of a Fog Radio Access Network (F-RAN) system equipped with a multicast fronthaul link. In this system, a control unit (CU) in the baseband processing unit (BBU) pool is connected to distributed edge nodes (ENs) through a multicast fronthaul link of finite capacity, and the ENs have baseband processing and caching capabilities. Each user equipment (UE) requests a file in a content library which is available at the CU, and the requested files are served by the closest ENs based on the cached contents and on the information received on the multicast fronthaul link. The performance of coded multicast fronthauling is investigated in terms of the delivery latency of the requested contents under the assumption of pipelined transmission on the fronthaul and edge links and of single-user encoding and decoding strategies based on the hard transfer of files on the fronthaul links. This work considers the downlink of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN), in which a control unit (CU) encodes confidential messages, each of which is intended for a user equipment (UE) and is to be kept secret from all the other UEs. As per the C-RAN architecture, the encoded baseband signals are quantized and compressed prior to the transfer to distributed radio units (RUs) that are connected to the CU via finite-capacity fronthaul links. This work argues that the quantization noise introduced by fronthaul quantization can be leveraged to act as "artificial" noise in order to enhance the rates achievable under secrecy constraints. To this end, it is proposed to control the statistics of the quantization noise by applying multivariate, or joint, fronthaul quantization/compression at the CU across all outgoing fronthaul links. Assuming wiretap coding, the problem of jointly optimizing the precoding and multivariate compression strategies, along with the covariance matrices of artificial noise signals generated by RUs, is formulated with the goal of maximizing the weighted sum of achievable secrecy rates while satisfying per-RU fronthaul capacity and power constraints. After showing that the artificial noise covariance matrices can be set to zero without loss of optimaliy, an iterative optimization algorithm is derived based on the concave convex procedure (CCCP), and some numerical results are provided to highlight the advantages of leveraging quantization noise as artificial noise., Comment: to appear in Proc. In millimeter-wave communication systems with large-scale antenna arrays, conventional digital beamforming may not be cost-effective. A promising solution is the implementation of hybrid beamforming techniques, which consist of low-dimensional digital beamforming followed by analog radio frequency (RF) beamforming. This work studies the optimization of hybrid beamforming in the context of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) architecture. In a C-RAN system, digital baseband signal processing functionalities are migrated from remote radio heads (RRHs) to a baseband processing unit (BBU) in the "cloud" by means of finite-capacity fronthaul links. Specifically, this work tackles the problem of jointly optimizing digital beamforming and fronthaul quantization strategies at the BBU, as well as RF beamforming at the RRHs, with the goal of maximizing the weighted downlink sum-rate. Fronthaul capacity and per-RRH power constraints are enforced along with constant modulus constraints on the RF beamforming matrices. An iterative algorithm is proposed that is based on successive convex approximation and on the relaxation of the constant modulus constraint. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is validated by numerical simulation results.

This work studies the robust design of downlink precoding for cloud radio access network (C-RAN) in the presence of asynchronism among remote radio heads (RRHs). Specifically, a C-RAN downlink system is considered in which non-ideal fronthaul links connecting two RRHs to a Baseband Unit (BBU) may cause a time offset, as well as a phase offset, between the transmissions of the two RRHs. The offsets are a priori not known to the BBU. With the aim of counteracting the unknown time offset, a robust precoding scheme is considered that is based on the idea of correlating the signal transmitted by one RRH with a number of delayed versions of the signal transmitted by the other RRH. For this transmission strategy, the problem of maximizing the worst-case minimum rate is tackled while satisfying per-RRH transmit power constraints. This work studies the joint design of cloud and edge processing for the downlink of a fog radio access network (F-RAN). In an F-RAN, as in cloud-RAN (C-RAN), a baseband processing unit (BBU) can perform joint baseband processing on behalf of the remote radio heads (RRHs) that are connected to the BBU by means of the fronthaul links. In addition to the minimal functionalities of conventional RRHs in C-RAN, the RRHs in an F-RAN may be equipped with local caches, in which frequently requested contents can be stored, as well as with baseband processing capabilities. They are hence referred to as enhanced RRH (eRRH). This work focuses on the design of the delivery phase for an arbitrary pre-fetching strategy used to populate the caches of the eRRHs. Two fronthauling modes are considered, namely a hard-transfer mode, whereby non-cached files are communicated over the fronthaul links to a subset of eRRHs, and a soft-transfer mode, whereby the fronthaul links are used to convey quantized baseband signals as in a C-RAN. Unlike the hard-transfer mode in which baseband processing is traditionally carried out only at the eRRHs, the soft-transfer mode enables both centralized precoding at the BBU and local precoding at the eRRHs based on the cached contents, by means of a novel superposition coding approach. To attain the advantages of both approaches, a hybrid design of soft- and hard-transfer modes is also proposed. The problem of maximizing the delivery rate is tackled under fronthaul capacity and per-eRRH power constraints. In cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), the baseband processing of the radio units (RUs) is migrated to remote control units (CUs). This is made possible by a network of backhaul links that connects RUs and CUs and that carries compressed baseband signals. While prior work has focused mostly on single-hop backhaul networks, this paper investigates efficient backhaul compression strategies for the uplink of C-RANs with a general multihop backhaul topology. A baseline multiplex-and-forward (MF) scheme is first studied in which each RU forwards the bit streams received from the connected RUs without any processing. It is observed that this strategy may cause significant performance degradation in the presence of a dense deployment of RUs with a well connected backhaul network. To obviate this problem, a scheme is proposed in which each RU decompresses the received bit streams and performs linear in-network processing of the decompressed signals. For both the MF and the decompress-process-and-recompress (DPR) backhaul schemes, the optimal design is addressed with the aim of maximizing the sum-rate under the backhaul capacity constraints. Recognizing the significant demands of the optimal solution of the DPR scheme in terms of channel state information (CSI) at the RUs, decentralized optimization algorithms are proposed under the assumption of limited CSI at the RUs. In cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), the baseband processing of the available macro- or pico/femto-base stations (BSs) is migrated to control units, each of which manages a subset of BS antennas. The centralized information processing at the control units enables effective interference management. The main roadblock to the implementation of C-RANs hinges on the effective integration of the radio units, i.e., the BSs, with the backhaul network. This work first reviews in a unified way recent results on the application of advanced multiterminal, as opposed to standard point-to-point, backhaul compression techniques. The gains provided by multiterminal backhaul compression are then confirmed via extensive simulations based on standard cellular models. In this work, a relay channel is studied in which a source encoder communicates with a destination decoder through a number of out-of-band relays that are connected to the decoder through capacity-constrained digital backhaul links. This model is motivated by the uplink of cloud radio access networks. In this scenario, a novel transmission and relaying strategies are proposed in which multi-layer transmission is used, on the one hand, to adaptively leverage the different decoding capabilities of the relays and, on the other hand, to enable hybrid decode-and-forward (DF) and compress-and-forward (CF) relaying. The hybrid relaying strategy allows each relay to forward part of the decoded messages and a compressed version of the received signal to the decoder. The problem of optimizing the power allocation across the layers and the compression test channels is formulated. Albeit non-convex, the derived problem is found to belong to the class of so called complementary geometric programs (CGPs). Using this observation, an iterative algorithm based on the homotopy method is proposed that achieves a stationary point of the original problem by solving a sequence of geometric programming (GP), and thus convex, problems. This work studies the joint design of precoding and backhaul compression strategies for the downlink of cloud radio access networks. In these systems, a central encoder is connected to multiple multi-antenna base stations (BSs) via finite-capacity backhaul links. At the central encoder, precoding is followed by compression in order to produce the rate-limited bit streams delivered to each BS over the corresponding backhaul link. In current state-of-the-art approaches, the signals intended for different BSs are compressed independently. In contrast, this work proposes to leverage joint compression, also referred to as multivariate compression, of the signals of different BSs in order to better control the effect of the additive quantization noises at the mobile stations (MSs). The problem of maximizing the weighted sum-rate with respect to both the precoding matrix and the joint correlation matrix of the quantization noises is formulated subject to power and backhaul capacity constraints. An iterative algorithm is proposed that achieves a stationary point of the problem. Moreover, in order to enable the practical implementation of multivariate compression across BSs, a novel architecture is proposed based on successive steps of minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) estimation and per-BS compression. Robust design with respect to imperfect channel state information is also discussed. This paper addresses robust communication on a fading relay channel in which the relay is connected to the decoder via an out-of-band digital link of limited capacity. Both the source-to-relay and the source-to-destination links are subject to fading gains, which are generally unknown to the encoder prior to transmission. To overcome this impairment, a hybrid automatic retransmission request (HARQ) protocol is combined with multi-layer broadcast transmission, thus allowing for variable-rate decoding. Moreover, motivated by cloud radio access network applications, the relay operation is limited to compress-and-forward. The aim is maximizing the throughput performance as measured by the average number of successfully received bits per channel use, under either long-term static channel (LTSC) or short-term static channel (STSC) models. In order to opportunistically leverage better channel states based on the HARQ feedback from the decoder, an adaptive compression strategy at the relay is also proposed. This work studies distributed compression for the uplink of a cloud radio access network where multiple multi-antenna base stations (BSs) are connected to a central unit, also referred to as cloud decoder, via capacity-constrained backhaul links. Since the signals received at different BSs are correlated, distributed source coding strategies are potentially beneficial, and can be implemented via sequential source coding with side information. For the problem of compression with side information, available compression strategies based on the criteria of maximizing the achievable rate or minimizing the mean square error are reviewed first. It is observed that, in either case, each BS requires information about a specific covariance matrix in order to realize the advantage of distributed source coding. Since this covariance matrix depends on the channel realizations corresponding to other BSs, a robust compression method is proposed for a practical scenario in which the information about the covariance available at each BS is imperfect. The problem is formulated using a deterministic worst-case approach, and an algorithm is proposed that achieves a stationary point for the problem. Then, BS selection is addressed with the aim of reducing the number of active BSs, thus enhancing the energy efficiency of the network. An optimization problem is formulated in which compression and BS selection are performed jointly by introducing a sparsity-inducing term into the objective function. An iterative algorithm is proposed that is shown to converge to a locally optimal point. From numerical results, it is observed that the proposed robust compression scheme compensates for a large fraction of the performance loss induced by the imperfect statistical information.
