In this multicenter study, we analyzed the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of patients with idiopathic HE.Patients and Methods: Patients diagnosed with idiopathic HE (idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome: iHES or hypereosinophilia with undetermined significance: HEus) at six tertiary hospitals between January 2010 and June 2021 were included in this retrospective observational study. Demographics, clinical and laboratory data, and treatment responses were obtained from the electronic medical records of the study subjects.Results: A total of 73 patients with idiopathic HE (45 with iHES and 28 with HEus) were included in the present study. Overall, 12 (26.7%) and 5 (17.9%) were women, and mean age of patients at diagnosis was 51.84 ± 17.29 years and 60.21 ± 18.01 years in iHES and HEus groups, respectively. Forty-three (95.6%) patients of iHES and 15 (53.6%) patients of HEus received corticosteroids as 1st-line treatment. Treatment response to corticosteroids in patients with iHES was generally good: complete response (n=25, 58.1%), partial response (n=12, 27.9%), no response (n=6, 14.0%). Treatment response to corticosteroids in HEus was complete response (n=7, 46.7%), partial response (n=6, 40.0%), and no response (n=2, 13.3%). There were 13 patients (46.4%) with HEus who were not treated.Conclusion: Corticosteroid treatment is generally effective and well tolerated by patients with iHES. Some patients with HEus are treated with corticosteroids in clinical practice. In this study, we investigated the effects of intraoperative glycemic variability (GV) and other glycemic variables on POD after cardiac surgery.Patients and Methods: A retrospective single-center cohort analysis was conducted using data from electronic medical record from 2018 to 2020. A total of 705 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery and/or valve surgery, and/or aortic replacement surgery were included in the analysis. Intraoperative GV was assessed with a coefficient of variation (CV), which was defined as the standard deviation of five intraoperative blood glucose measurements divided by the mean. POD assessment was performed three times a day in the ICU and twice a day in the ward until discharge by trained medical staff. POD was diagnosed if any of the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit was positive in the ICU, and the Confusion Assessment Method was positive in the ward. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify associations between intraoperative GV and POD.Results: POD occurred in 306 (43.4%) patients. When intraoperative glycemic CV was compared as a continuous variable, the delirium group had higher intraoperative glycemic CV than the non-delirium group (22.59 [17.09, 29.68] vs 18.19 [13.00, 23.35], p < 0.001), and when intraoperative glycemic CV was classified as quartiles, the incidence of POD increased as intraoperative glycemic CV quartiles increased (first quartile 29.89%; second quartile 36.67%; third quartile 44.63%; and fourth quartile 62.64%, p < 0.001). In the multivariable logistic regression model, patients in the third quartile of intraoperative glycemic CV were 1.833 times (OR 1.833, 95% CI: 1.132– 2.967, p = 0.014), and patients in the fourth quartile of intraoperative glycemic CV were 3.645 times (OR 3.645, 95% CI: 2.235– 5.944, p < 0.001) more likely to develop POD than those in the first quartile of intraoperative glycemic CV.Conclusion: Intraoperative blood glucose fluctuation, manifested by intraoperative GV, is associated with POD after cardiac surgery. After the 2-week single-blind placebo run-in period, initial standard doses of 60-mg fimasartan, 80-mg valsartan, and 10-mg olmesartan were administered for 2 weeks, then forcibly up-titrated higher doses (fimasartan 120 mg, valsartan 160 mg, olmesartan 20 mg) were given for 4 weeks. ABP was measured before and after the 6-week treatment. Primary endpoint was reduction of sitting office systolic BP (SiSBP) of fimasartan compared to valsartan after 6 weeks. Secondary endpoints were reduction of sitting office diastolic BP (SiDBP) and 24 hrs, day-time, and night-time mean systolic and diastolic ABP (ASBP, ADBP) after 6 weeks.Results: Patients’ mean age was 58.34± 7.68 years, and 289 patients were male (79.18%). After the 6-week treatment, SiSBP reduction of fimasartan and valsartan were − 16.26± 15.07 and − 12.81± 13.87 (p=0.0298) and SiDBP were − 7.63± 9.67 and − 5.14± 8.52 (p=0.0211). Reductions in 24 hrs mean ASBP were − 15.22± 13.33 and − 9.45± 12.37 (p=0.0009), and ADBPs were − 8.74± 7.55 and − 5.98± 7.85 (p=0.0140). Reductions of night-time ASBPs were − 16.80± 15.81 and − 10.32± 14.88 (p=0.0012), and those of night-time ADBPs were − 8.89± 9.93 and − 5.55± 9.70 (p=0.0152). Reduction of BP in olmesartan group did not demonstrate significant difference with fimasartan group in all end-points.Conclusion: Fimasartan 120-mg treatment demonstrated superior efficacy in reduction of SiSBP, SiDBP, and 24 hrs ASBP and ADBP compared to valsartan 160 mg. 4. Induction of antigen-specific immune tolerance using biodegradable nanoparticles containing antigen and dexamethasone

In the present study, Dex and model antigen ovalbumin (OVA) were encapsulated with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) to deliver Dex and OVA preferentially to phagocytic cells, reducing systemic side effects of Dex. The OVA-specific immune tolerance-inducing activity of the nanoparticles (NPs) was examined.Methods: Polymeric NPs containing OVA and Dex (NP[OVA+Dex]) were prepared by the water-in-oil-in-water double emulsion solvent evaporation method. The effects of NP[OVA+Dex] on the maturation and function of immature dendritic cells (DCs) were examined in vitro. Furthermore, the OVA-specific immune tolerizing effects of NP[OVA+Dex] were confirmed in mice that were intravenously injected or orally fed with the NPs.Results: Immature DCs treated in vitro with NP[OVA+Dex] did not mature into immunogenic DCs but instead were converted into tolerogenic DCs. Furthermore, profoundly suppressed generation of OVA-specific cytotoxic T cells and production of OVA-specific IgG were observed in mice injected with NP[OVA+Dex], whereas regulatory T cells were concomitantly increased. Feeding of mice with NP[OVA+Dex] also induced OVA-specific immune tolerance.Conclusion: The present study demonstrates that oral feeding as well as intravenous injection of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) NPs encapsulating both antigen and Dex is a useful means of inducing antigen-specific immune tolerance, which is crucial for the treatment of autoimmune diseases.Keywords: polymeric nanoparticle, dexamethasone, ovalbumin, tolerogenic dendritic cell, antigen-specific immune tolerance

C24 is the major class of FAs of ceramides. However, there are also other classes of ceramides with diverse chain lengths of FAs, and these lengths generally range from C16 to C26. This study aimed to prepare several types of phytoceramide containing diverse chain lengths of N-acylated FAs and compare them with C18-ceramide N-stearoyl phytosphingosine (NP) in terms of their effects on the physiological properties of the SC. We chose natural oils, such as horse fat oil, shea butter, sunflower oil, and a mixture of macadamia nut, shea butter, moringa, and meadowfoam seed oil, as sources of FAs and phytosphingosine as a sphingoid backbone to synthesize diverse phytoceramides. Each phytoceramide exhibited a distinctive formation of the lamellar structure, and their FA profiles were similar to those of their respective natural oil. The skin barrier properties, as analyzed in human skin, clearly demonstrated that all the phytoceramides improved the recovery rate of the damaged SC and enhanced hydration better than C18-ceramide NP did. In conclusion, natural oil-derived phytoceramides could represent a novel class of ceramides for cosmetic applications in the development of an ideal skin barrier moisturizer. 6. High coronary calcium score and post-procedural CK-MB are noninvasive predictors of coronary stent restenosis

Methods: A total of 1,072 patients (63.2% male, mean age: 61.7±10.3 years) who underwent coronary multi-detect computed tomography at index procedure and follow-up coronary angiography (CAG) after drug-eluting stent (DES) were divided into two groups: those with and without target lesion revascularization (TLR; >50% reduction in luminal stent diameter or angina symptoms on follow-up CAG). The CCSs for predicting stent revascularization were elucidated. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to risk factors. The initial CCS was significantly higher in the TLR group (1,102.4±743.7 vs 345.8±51.05, P=0.04). After adjustment of significant factors for TLR, only CCS and post-procedural creatine kinase MB form (CK-MB) elevation were significant predictors of coronary artery TLR. Receiver operation curve revealed that >800 in CCS had 69% in sensitivity and 88% in specificity about predicting the TLR. Conclusion: High CCS with post-procedural CK-MB might be the useful predictors for TLR after DES implantation. Keywords: coronary restenosis, drug-eluting stents, calcium, creatine kinase

Abstract

Using 0.8 x 10(6) D+ D- pairs collected with the CLEO-c detector at the psi(3770) resonance, we have searched for flavor-changing neutral current and lepton-number-violating decays of D+ mesons to final states with dielectrons. We find no indication of either, obtaining 90% confidence level upper limits of B(D+ --> pi+ e+ e-) < 7.4 x 10(-6), B(D+ --> pi- e+ d+) < 3.6 x 10(-6), B(D+ --> K+ e+ e-) < 6.2 x 10(-6), and B(D+ --> K- e+ e+) < 4.5 x 10(-6).

Abstract

Importance There is a major need for effective, well-tolerated treatments for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of the autotaxin inhibitor ziritaxestat in patients with IPF. Design, Setting, and Participants The 2 identically designed, phase 3, randomized clinical trials, ISABELA 1 and ISABELA 2, were conducted in Africa, Asia-Pacific region, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America (26 countries). A total of 1306 patients with IPF were randomized (525 patients at 106 sites in ISABELA 1 and 781 patients at 121 sites in ISABELA 2). Enrollment began in November 2018 in both trials and follow-up was completed early due to study termination on April 12, 2021, for ISABELA 1 and on March 30, 2021, for ISABELA 2. Interventions Patients were randomized 1:1:1 to receive 600 mg of oral ziritaxestat, 200 mg of ziritaxestat, or placebo once daily in addition to local standard of care (pirfenidone, nintedanib, or neither) for at least 52 weeks. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was the annual rate of decline for forced vital capacity (FVC) at week 52. The key secondary outcomes were disease progression, time to first respiratory-related hospitalization, and change from baseline in St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire total score (range, 0 to 100; higher scores indicate poorer health-related quality of life). Results At the time of study termination, 525 patients were randomized in ISABELA 1 and 781 patients in ISABELA 2 (mean age: 70.0 [SD, 7.2] years in ISABELA 1 and 69.8 [SD, 7.1] years in ISABELA 2; male: 82.4% and 81.2%, respectively). The trials were terminated early after an independent data and safety monitoring committee concluded that the benefit to risk profile of ziritaxestat no longer supported their continuation. Ziritaxestat did not improve the annual rate of FVC decline vs placebo in either study. In ISABELA 1, the least-squares mean annual rate of FVC decline was –124.6 mL (95% CI, −178.0 to −71.2 mL) with 600 mg of ziritaxestat vs –147.3 mL (95% CI, −199.8 to −94.7 mL) with placebo (between-group difference, 22.7 mL [95% CI, −52.3 to 97.6 mL]), and –173.9 mL (95% CI, −225.7 to −122.2 mL) with 200 mg of ziritaxestat (between-group difference vs placebo, −26.7 mL [95% CI, −100.5 to 47.1 mL]). In ISABELA 2, the least-squares mean annual rate of FVC decline was –173.8 mL (95% CI, −209.2 to −138.4 mL) with 600 mg of ziritaxestat vs –176.6 mL (95% CI, −211.4 to −141.8 mL) with placebo (between-group difference, 2.8 mL [95% CI, −46.9 to 52.4 mL]) and –174.9 mL (95% CI, −209.5 to −140.2 mL) with 200 mg of ziritaxestat (between-group difference vs placebo, 1.7 mL [95% CI, −47.4 to 50.8 mL]). There was no benefit with ziritaxestat vs placebo for the key secondary outcomes. In ISABELA 1, all-cause mortality was 8.0% with 600 mg of ziritaxestat, 4.6% with 200 mg of ziritaxestat, and 6.3% with placebo; in ISABELA 2, it was 9.3% with 600 mg of ziritaxestat, 8.5% with 200 mg of ziritaxestat, and 4.7% with placebo. Conclusions and Relevance Ziritaxestat did not improve clinical outcomes compared with placebo in patients with IPF receiving standard of care treatment with pirfenidone or nintedanib or in those not receiving standard of care treatment. Abstract

© A pandemic has sent the world into chaos. It has not only upended our lives; hundreds of thousands of lives have already been tragically lost. The global crisis has been disruptive, even a threat, to healthcare simulation, affecting all aspects of operations from education to employment. While simulationists around the world have responded to this crisis, it has also provided a stimulus for the continued evolution of simulation. We have crafted a manifesto for action, incorporating a more comprehensive understanding of healthcare simulation, beyond tool, technique or experience, to understanding it now as a professional practice. Healthcare simulation as a practice forms the foundation for the three tenets comprising the manifesto: safety, advocacy and leadership. Using these three tenets, we can powerfully shape the resilience of healthcare simulation practice for now and for the future. Our call to action for all simulationists is to adopt a commitment to comprehensive safety, to advocate collaboratively and to lead ethically.

Abstract

Using data collected on the psi(3770) resonance and near the Ds*+ Ds- peak production energy by the CLEO-c detector, we study the decays of the possible D->PP modes and report measurements of or upper limits on all branching fractions for Cabibbo-favored, singly-Cabibbo-suppressed, and doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed D->PP decays except modes involving K0L (and except D0->K+ pi-). Abstract

Using a sample of 2.59x10{sup 7} {psi}(2S) decays collected by the CLEO-c detector, we present results of a study of {chi}{sub cJ} (J=0, 1, 2) decays into baryon-antibaryon final states. We present the world's most precise measurements of the {chi}{sub cJ}{yields}pp and {chi}{sub cJ}{yields}{lambda}{lambda} branching fractions, and the first measurements of {chi}{sub c0} decays to other hyperons. These results illuminate the decay mechanism of the {chi}{sub c} states.

Abstract

We have searched a sample of 9.6 million BB-bar events for the lepton-flavor-violating decays B --> h e^{+-} mu^{-+}, B^+ --> h^- e^+ e^+, B^+ --> h^- e^+ mu^+, and B^+ --> h^- mu^+ mu^+, where h is pi, K, rho, and K*(892), a total of sixteen modes. Abstract

BACKGROUND The safe and appropriate use of long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs) for the treatment of asthma has been widely debated. In two large clinical trials, investigators found a potential risk of serious asthma-related events associated with LABAs. This study was designed to evaluate the risk of administering the LABA salmeterol in combination with an inhaled glucocorticoid, fluticasone propionate. METHODS In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind trial, adolescent and adult patients (age, ≥12 years) with persistent asthma were assigned to receive either fluticasone with salmeterol or fluticasone alone for 26 weeks. All the patients had a history of a severe asthma exacerbation in the year before randomization but not during the previous month. Patients were excluded from the trial if they had a history of lifethreatening or unstable asthma. The primary safety end point was the first serious asthma-related event (death, endotracheal intubation, or hospitalization). Noninferiority of fluticasone–salmeterol to fluticasone alone was defined as an upper boundary of the 95% confidence interval for the risk of the primary safety end point of less than 2.0. The efficacy end point was the first severe asthma exacerbation. RESULTS Of 11,679 patients who were enrolled, 67 had 74 serious asthma-related events, with 36 events in 34 patients in the fluticasone–salmeterol group and 38 events in 33 patients in the fluticasone-only group. The hazard ratio for a serious asthmarelated event in the fluticasone–salmeterol group was 1.03 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.64 to 1.66), and noninferiority was achieved (P = 0.003). There were no asthma-related deaths; 2 patients in the fluticasone-only group underwent asthmarelated intubation. The risk of a severe asthma exacerbation was 21% lower in the fluticasone–salmeterol group than in the fluticasone-only group (hazard ratio, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.70 to 0.89), with at least one severe asthma exacerbation occurring in 480 of 5834 patients (8%) in the fluticasone–salmeterol group, as compared with 597 of 5845 patients (10%) in the fluticasone-only group (P

Abstract

The temporal crest canal (TCC) is a variation of the bony canal with two accessory foramina that correspond to an entrance and an exit on the mandibular ramus. This study investigated the anatomical characteristics of the TCC using CBCT.The study population consisted 446 patients who had undergone CBCT. Sagittal, cross-sectional and three-dimensional images were evaluated for the presence of a TCC. The canals were classified into two types according to the configuration, and the location of the posterior accessory foramen of the TCC was also recorded.6 TCCs were present in 4 of 446 patients (0.90% of the total population). All of the TCCs were observed in males, and all of the posterior foramina were located superior to the mandibular foramina on the medial aspect of the mandibular ramus. There were five noticeably curved and increasingly narrow canals (Type 1) and one slightly curved and uniformly wide canal (Type 2).Precise knowledge of the TCC is clinically important for suitable local anaesthetic nerve block and the planning of surgical procedures that involve the mandibular ramus. Three-dimensional images of CBCT data are particularly effective for confirming the presence of this variation.

Abstract

BACKGROUND—Airway wall thickening has been observed in post mortem studies of patients with asthma. Assessment of airway wall thickening by high resolution computed tomographic (HRCT) scanning has been reported in experimental studies. We have used HRCT scanning to measure airway wall thickness at the segmental and subsegmental levels in 40 patients with asthma and 14 normal controls. METHODS—The subjects were prospectively divided into four age and sex matched groups: 14 patients with a history of near fatal attack of asthma (NFA; group 1), 12 patients with moderate asthma (group 2), 13 patients with mild asthma (group 3), and 14 normal controls (group 4). All subjects were non-smokers. High resolution (1 mm collimation) CT scans of the chest were done at five different levels. RESULTS—The mean (SD) forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) was 68 (20)% of predicted for group 1, 73 (12)% for group 2, 102(12)% for group 3, and 103 (12)% for group 4. The ratio of airway wall thickness to outer diameter (T/D) and the percentage wall area (WA%) defined as (wall area/total airway area) × 100 were used to compare airway wall thickness between the groups. The mean (SD) T/D and WA% were 0.27 (0.05) and 78.0 (9.2)% for group 1, 0.27 (0.05) and 78.8 (9.2)% for group 2, 0.25 (0.04) and 74.2(7.5)% for group 3, and 0.23 (0.04) and 70.9 (8.2)% for group 4. T/D and WA% were not significantly different between groups 1 and 2. However, both groups 1 and 2 had higher T/D and WA% than either group 3 or 4 (p < 0.001) and group 3 had a higher T/D and WA% than group 4 (p < 0.03).The differences (95% CI) between the groups in WA% were 7.1% (0 to 14.4) for groups 1 and 4, 3.8% (-3.4 to 10) for groups 1 and 3, and 3.3% (-4.4 to 10) for groups 3and 4. The differences between the groups in T/D and WA% were noted both for those with airways with a luminal diameter of >2 mm and those with a luminal diameter of ⩽2 mm. CONCLUSIONS—All the patient groups had greater airway wall thickening than the normal subjects as assessed by HRCT scanning, but patients with more severe asthma had greater airway wall thickening than those with mild asthma. The methodology described in this study may be useful in assessing airway calibre in early intervention studies with anti-inflammatory therapy.

Abstract

The first measurements of the coherence factor R_{K_S^0K\pi} and the average strong--phase difference \delta^{K_S^0K\pi} in D^0 \to K_S^0 K^\mp\pi^\pm decays are reported. These parameters can be used to improve the determination of the unitary triangle angle \gamma in B^- \rightarrow \widetilde{D}K^-$ decays, where $\widetilde{D}$ is either a D^0 or a D^0-bar meson decaying to the same final state, and also in studies of charm mixing. The measurements of the coherence factor and strong-phase difference are made using quantum-correlated, fully-reconstructed D^0D^0-bar pairs produced in e^+e^- collisions at the \psi(3770) resonance. The measured values are R_{K_S^0K\pi} = 0.73 \pm 0.08 and \delta^{K_S^0K\pi} = (8.3 \pm 15.2)$^\circ$ for an unrestricted kinematic region and R_{K*K} = 1.00 \pm 0.16 and \delta^{K*K} = (26.5 \pm 15.8)$^\circ$ for a region where the combined K_S^0 \pi^\pm invariant mass is within 100 MeV/c^2 of the K^{*}(892)^\pm mass. These results indicate a significant level of coherence in the decay. In addition, isobar models are presented for the two decays, which show the dominance of the K^*(892)^\pm resonance. The branching ratio {B}(D^0 \rightarrow K_S^0K^+\pi^-)/{B}(D^0 \rightarrow K_S^0K^-\pi^+) is determined to be 0.592 \pm 0.044 (stat.) \pm 0.018 (syst.), which is more precise than previous measurements.

Abstract

Using a data sample of 2.59 x 10^7 psi(2S) decays obtained with the CLEO-c detector, we perform amplitude analyses of the complementary decay chains chi_c1 -> eta pi+ pi- and chi_c1 -> eta' pi+ pi-. We find evidence for a P-wave eta' pi scattering amplitude, which, if interpreted as a resonance, would have exotic J^PC = 1^-+ and parameters consistent with the pi_1(1600) state reported in other production mechanisms. We also make the first observation of the decay a_0(980) -> eta' pi and measure the ratio of branching fractions B(a_0(980) -> eta' pi)/B(a_0(980) -> eta pi) = 0.064 +- 0.014 +- 0.014. Abstract

Background: Insufflation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the operative field has been used to prevent major organ injury attributed to air embolisms in cardiac surgery. However, it may be preferable to avoid hypercapnia induced by CO2 insufflation, owing to its potentially harmful effect. To investigate the effectiveness of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a possible method for continuous monitoring of arterial CO2 tension during cardiac surgery, we evaluated the correlation between the change in arterial CO2 tension and the change in regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rScO2) obtained from NIRS in as controlled a condition as possible. Methods: Thirty patients who underwent surgical correction for atrial or ventricular septal defects were enrolled in this study. Patients who had pulmonary hypertension or other intracardiac anomalies were excluded. Anesthetic and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) management were conducted according to our standard institutional practice. Data obtained from arterial blood gas analyses and corresponding regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rScO2) recorded from NIRS before and after the insufflations of CO2 during CPB were used for analysis. Results: The change in arterial CO2 tension correlated with the change in rScO2 in the left hemisphere (r = 0.681, p Conclusions: Since the change in regional cerebral oxygen saturation was correlated with the change in arterial CO2 tension during mild hypothermic CPB, NIRS might be a possible non-invasive method for monitoring of arterial CO2 tension without incurring additional cost in this setting.

Abstract

Using e^+e^- collision data corresponding to 5.88M Y(3S) [25.9M psi(2S)] decays and acquired by the CLEO III [CLEO-c] detectors operating at CESR, we study the single-pion transitions from Y(3S) [psi(2S)] to the respective spin-singlet states h_{b[c]}. Utilizing only the momentum of suitably selected transition-pi^0 candidates, we obtain the upper limit B(Y(3S) -> pi^0 h_b) < 1.2\times 10^{-3} at 90% confidence level, and measure B(psi(2S) -> pi^0 h_c) = (9.0+-1.5+-1.3)\times 10^{-4}. Abstract

We present the first search for the decay $D^+_{s}\to \omega e^{+}\nu$ to test the four-quark content of the $D^+_{s}$ and the $\omega$-$\phi$ mixing model for this decay. We use 586 $\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 4170 MeV. We find no evidence of a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(D^+_{s}\to\omega e^+\nu)

Abstract

Using 586 $\textrm{pb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data acquired at $\sqrt{s}=4.170$ GeV with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report the first observation of $D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} e^{+} e^{-}$ with a significance of $5.3 \sigma$. The ratio of branching fractions $\calB(D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} e^{+} e^{-}) / \calB(D_{s}^{*+} \to D_{s}^{+} \gamma)$ is measured to be $[ 0.72^{+0.15}_{-0.13} (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.10 (\textrm{syst})]%$, which is consistent with theoretical expectations.

Abstract

We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays of the Υ(1S) resonance into a final state consisting of a photon and two KS0 candidates. We find evidence for a signal for Υ(1S)→γf2′(1525); f2′(1525)→γKS0KS0, at a rate B(Υ(1S) →γf2′(1525))=(4.0±1.3±0.6)×10-5, consistent with previous observations of Υ(1S)→γf2′(1525) ; f2′(1525)→K+K-, and isospin. Combining this branching fraction with existing branching fraction measurements of Υ(1S)→γf2′(1525) and J/ψ→γf2′(1525), we obtain the ratio of branching fractions: B(Υ(1S) →γf2′(1525))/B(J/ψ→γf2′(1525))=0. 09±0.02, approximately consistent with expectations based on soft-collinear effective theory. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Using 9.32, 5.88 million Upsilon(2S,3S) decays taken with the CLEO-III detector, we obtain five product branching fractions for the exclusive processes Upsilon(2S) => gamma chi_{b0,1,2}(1P) => gamma gamma Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b1,2}(1P) => gamma gamma Upsilon(1S). We observe the transition chi_{b0}(1P) => gamma Upsilon(1S) for the first time. Using the known branching fractions for B[Upsilon(2S) => gamma chi_{bJ}(1P)], we extract values for B[chi_{bJ}(1P) => gamma Upsilon(1S)] for J=0, 1, 2. In turn, these values can be used to unfold the Upsilon(3S) product branching fractions to obtain values for B[Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b1,2}(1P) for the first time individually. Comparison of these with each other and with the branching fraction B[Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b0}] previously measured by CLEO provides tests of relativistic corrections to electric dipole matrix elements.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the decay D^+ -> eta' e^+ nu_e in two analyses, which combined provide a branching fraction of B(D+ -> eta' e nu) = (2.16 +/- 0.53 +/- 0.07) x 10^{-4}. We also provide an improved measurement of B(D+ -> eta e nu) = (11.4 +/- 0.9 +/- 0.4) x 10^{-4}, provide the first form factor measurement, and set the improved upper limit B(D+ -> phi e nu) < 0.9 x 10^{-4} (90% C.L.)., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, available through http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS/, submitted to PRD. Abstract

We report the first determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^-. In addition, we present updated measurements of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^-. Both measurements exploit the quantum coherence between a pair of D^0 and D^0-bar mesons produced from psi(3770) decays. The strong-phase differences measured are important for determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma/phi_3 in B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde decays, where D^0-tilde is a D^0 or D^0-bar meson decaying to K^0_S h^+ h^- (h=pi,K), in a manner independent of the model assumed to describe the D^0 -> K^0_S h^+ h^- decay. Using our results, the uncertainty in gamma/phi_3 due to the error on the strong-phase difference is expected to be between 1.7 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis using B^- K^- D^0-tilde D^0-tilde -> K^0_S pi^+ pi^- decays, and between 3.2 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis based on B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde, D^0-tilde -> K^0_S K^+ K^- decays. A measurement is also presented of the CP-odd fraction, F_-, of the decay D^0 -> K^0_S K^+ K^- in the region of the phi -> K^+ K^- resonance. Abstract

Background: Left ventricular filling pressure (LVFP) is related to the long-term prognosis in end-stage renal disease. The aims of this study were to evaluate the time course of the changes in LVFP, the predictors for the changes of LVFP, and the plasma N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels as indicators for the changes of LVFP in chronic hemodialysis (HD). Methods: This study was designed prospectively. Doppler echocardiographic examinations and measurement of plasma NT-proBNP levels were performed in 37 consecutive patients on chronic HD and repeated at median of 43 months later. A ratio of peak early transmitral flow velocity to peak early diastolic mitral annular velocity (E/Em), an estimate of LVFP, was calculated. Results: E/Em ratios were significantly increased during the follow-up period. In multivariate analysis, age and changes of LVMI were independently associated with the changes of E/Em ratios. The plasma NT-proBNP levels were independently associated with E/Em at baseline and at the end of follow-up. The changes of plasma NT-proBNP levels were independently associated with changes of E/Em ratios (β-coefficient 0.453, p = 0.003). Conclusions: Our data suggest that the deterioration of LVFP parallels with the progression of LV hypertrophy. Monitoring the plasma NT-proBNP levels might be useful for the detection of the LVFP changes in chronic HD.

Abstract

Using a sample of 25.9×106 ψ(2S) decays acquired with the CLEO-c detector at the CESR e+e- collider, we report branching fractions for the decays χcJ→pp̄π0, pp̄η, and pp̄ω, with J=0, 1, 2. Our results for B(χcJ→pp̄π0) and B(χcJ→pp̄η) are consistent with, but more precise than, previous measurements. Furthermore, we include the first measurement of B(χcJ→pp̄ω). © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Using a large sample (≈11800 events) of D+→K -π+e+νe and D+→K -π+μ+νμ decays collected by the CLEO-c detector running at the ψ(3770), we measure the helicity basis form factors free from the assumptions of spectroscopic pole dominance and provide new, accurate measurements of the absolute branching fractions for D +→K̄*0e+νe and D+→K̄*0μ+νμ decays. We find branching fractions which are consistent with previous world averages. Our measured helicity basis form factors are consistent with the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions for the three main helicity basis form factors describing D+→K̄*0 +ν decay. The ability to analyze D+→K -π+μ+νμ allows us to make the first nonparametric measurements of the mass-suppressed form factor. Our result is inconsistent with existing lattice QCD calculations. Finally, we measure the form factor that controls nonresonant s-wave interference with the D +→K̄*0+ν amplitude and search for evidence of possible additional nonresonant d- or f-wave interference with the K̄*0. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

A search for J/ψ radiative decay to weakly interacting neutral final states was performed using the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. J/ψ events were selected by observing the hadronic decay ψ(2S)→π+π-J/ψ. A total of 3.7×106 J/ψ events were used to study the decay J/ψ→γ+X, where X is a narrow state that is invisible to the detector. No significant signal was observed, and upper limits on the branching fraction were set for masses mX up to 960MeV/c2. The upper limit corresponding to mX=0 is 4.3×10-6 at the 90% confidence level. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report evidence for the ground state of bottomonium, ηb(1S), in the radiative decay Υ(3S)→γηb in e+e- annihilation data taken with the CLEO III detector. Using 6×106 Υ(3S) decays, and assuming Γ(ηb)=10±5MeV/c2, we obtain B(Υ(3S)→γηb)=(7.1±1.8±1.3)×10 -4, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The statistical significance is ∼4σ. The mass is determined to be M(ηb)=9391.8±6.6±2.0MeV/c2, which corresponds to the hyperfine splitting ΔMhf(1S)b=68.5±6.6±2.0MeV/c2. Using 9×106 Υ(2S) decays, we place an upper limit on the corresponding Υ(2S) decay, B(Υ(2S)→γηb)
