5. Join the Club! A New Approach to the Traditional Reading Clinic.

Abstract

A "Reading Club" approach at Liberty University (Virginia) has been implemented to avoid the stigma that may be associated with elementary and junior high school students receiving remedial reading instruction. Students in grades K-8 from the local schools come to the university campus to be tutored in reading. Elementary education majors enrolled in the reading diagnosis and remediation course provide one-to-one tutoring. The sessions are referred to as a "Reading Club" rather than a reading clinic to avoid the medical/disabled connotations associated with a clinic. The club theme is carried out with contests and prizes. Enrichment is provided for those reading at or above grade level as well as for those reading below grade level. Although the Reading Club concept is utilized to promote a positive atmosphere, the tutoring sessions are serious business. The results of the Reading Club are sometimes immediate. Students who indicated a negative attitude toward reading during their first visit often return the next week with enthusiasm about what they have read. Parents report that performance and attitudes at school have improved as well. Students look forward to attending the Reading Club meeting each week and tutors also enjoy teaching with the positive approach. (RS)

6. A Study of Students at Risk.

Abstract

A collaborative study between 100 Phi Delta Kappa chapters attempted to answer the following questions about at-risk students: (1) who is at risk; (2) what are they like; (3) what is the school doing to help these students; and (4) how effective are these efforts? Each chapter identified three representative public schools in its area: one elementary, one middle school, and one high school. In each school, the chapter interviewed the principal, surveyed teachers, wrote a narrative report about the school, and collected data about 100 students in each school. A "holding power statistic" was applied to the high school and an in-depth case study of one at-risk student was completed which included video-taped interviews. Results of data gathered from 22,018 students were used to produce an "at-risk scale," with the upper quartile designated as at-risk. Schools' efforts were examined from several perspectives including viewpoints of teachers and principals. Results indicated that principals and teachers agreed that teachers, rather than parents or the students themselves, should be responsible for helping students acquire reading comprehension. A school effort score indicated that few school interventions were provided for at-risk students and that a minimal relationship between the degree of the at-risk score and the school effort score existed. The ultimate goal of follow-up research is to identify at-risk students and provide appropriate interventions before the students experience failure. 12. Learning Style Diversity in Post –Secondary Distance Education

Abstract

During the fall semester of 2005, 153 university graduate students’ preferred learning styles were measured with the Kolb Learning Style Inventory, online version 3.1. The primary findings of the study indicated all of the learning styles and processes described by Kolb were represented in the distance learning population and suggested distance and residential learners uniquely engage the learning process. Biblical references were discussed with respect to the uniqueness displayed by study participants.

One of the challenges in the implementation of the mission has been an inadequate number of field experience placements available in Christian school settings.

20. Sentence Level Processing in Basal Reading Programs

Abstract

A content analysis of the manuals of five basal reading programs, levels primer through grade three, was conducted in order to describe and contrast the amount of reading instruction given to word level processing, discourse level processing, and the transition between the two, which was designated as sentence level processing. Sentence level activities in each manual were assigned to syntax, punctuation, or intonation categories. Two trends were observed between primer and third grade manuals: a decrease in activities in word level processing (61% to 45%) and an increase in activities in discourse level processing (30% to 40%). Activities for sentence level processing were consistently low, averaging 5% for all grades. The study concludes that sentence level instruction in basal reading programs may be inadequate and that more activities should be provided to aid the reader who is having difficulty making the transition from word level to sentence level reading.

22. Pender's Health Promotion Model and HPV Health-Promoting Behaviors among College-Aged Males: Concept Integration.

Abstract

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world and causes many ano-genital cancers and pre-cancerous lesions. HPV is most common in adolescents and young adults with highest risk in college-aged males. With no available cure for HPV, interest in HPV prevention increased since advent of the HPV vaccine. While public health literature incorporated HPV and health promotion, nursing literature neglected health promotion in favor of a focus on prevention. Nursing attempted to address concepts regarding HPV within theoretical frameworks, but utilization of such frameworks regarding HPV in college-aged males is inadequate. The aim of this article is to integrate health-promoting behaviors related to HPV in college-aged males within Pender’s Health Promotion Model to increase HPV education and decrease the overall incidence of HPV related disease. Abstract

Problem: The concept of health-promoting behaviors incorporates ideas presented in the Ottawa Charter of Public Health and the nursing-based Health Promotion Model. Despite the fact that the concept of health-promoting behaviors has a nursing influence, literature suggests nursing has inadequately developed and used this concept within nursing practice. A further review of literature regarding health promotion behaviors and the human papilloma virus suggest a distinct gap in nursing literature., Method: This article presents a concept analysis of health-promoting behaviors related to the human papilloma virus in order to encourage the application of the concept into nursing practice, promote continued nursing research regarding this concept, and further expand the application of health-promoting behaviors to other situations and populations within the nursing discipline., Conclusion: Attributes of health-promoting behaviors are presented and include empowerment, participation, community, and a positive concept of health. Antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents are also presented, as are model, borderline, and contrary cases to help clarify the concept.
