- Abstract
In this exploratory study, we investigated students' design thinking strategies during a challenge involving the design of an energy-efficient house. We used the Informed Design Teaching and Learning Matrix as a framework for characterizing the students' design thinking, focusing on four specific strategies--generating ideas, conducting experiments, revising and iterating, and troubleshooting. To elicit the use of design thinking strategies, we employed two pedagogical approaches--tell-and-practice (T&P) and contrasting cases (CC)--as conditions in a within-subjects design, where participants were exposed to one approach first and then the other. Findings suggest that students exposed to T&P then CC had more balanced use of all four design strategies as compared to the students exposed to CC first then T&P. Regarding changes in strategies used, there was a significant increase in conducting experiments, but a significant decrease in troubleshooting, after students were exposed to both approaches. This finding suggests that students spent more time experimenting and understanding how the system works rather than focusing on problematic areas and finding solutions to the problems they faced during the design process. Implications of the study include recommendations for using T&P and CC to elicit design strategies during design thinking.

- Abstract
In this design case, we describe a multi-year process during which a team of faculty designed a four-year undergraduate major in user experience (UX) design at a large research-intensive institution. We document the program- and course-level design experiences of five faculty members. This multi-year process has culminated in a dual-strand, integrated studio learning environment. Two types of studios--"learning" and "experience" studios--form the core of the program, with learning studios allowing cohort-specific skills development and practice, and experience studios providing cross-cohort opportunities to work on industry projects. We detail our process of developing this course sequence and the program-level connecting points among the courses, identifying institutional supports and barriers, the unique and varied skillsets of the involved faculty, and the growing agency and competence of our students in the program.

Computer Science - Human-Computer Interaction - Abstract
Professional roles for data visualization designers are growing in popularity, and interest in relationships between the academic research and professional practice communities is gaining traction. However, despite the potential for knowledge sharing between these communities, we have little understanding of the ways in which practitioners design in real-world, professional settings. Inquiry in numerous design disciplines indicates that practitioners approach complex situations in ways that are fundamentally different from those of researchers. In this work, I take a practice-led approach to understanding visualization design practice on its own terms. Twenty data visualization practitioners were interviewed and asked about their design process, including the steps they take, how they make decisions, and the methods they use. Findings suggest that practitioners do not follow highly systematic processes, but instead rely on situated forms of knowing and acting in which they draw from precedent and use methods and principles that are determined appropriate in the moment. These findings have implications for how visualization researchers understand and engage with practitioners, and how educators approach the training of future data visualization designers., Comment: To be published in IEEE TVCG (Proc. Computer Science - Human-Computer Interaction - Abstract
Data visualization design often requires creativity, and research is needed to understand its nature and means for promoting it. The current visualization literature on creativity is not well developed, especially with respect to the experiences of professional data visualization designers. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 data visualization practitioners, focusing on a specific aspect of creativity known as design fixation. Fixation occurs when designers adhere blindly or prematurely to a set of ideas that limit creative outcomes. We present practitioners' experiences and perspectives from their own design practice, specifically focusing on their views of (i) the nature of fixation, (ii) factors encouraging fixation, and (iii) factors discouraging fixation. We identify opportunities for future research related to chart recommendations, inspiration, and perspective shifts in data visualization design., Comment: IEEE 2021 Visualization Conference (VIS), short papers

9. How do Visualization Designers Think? Design Cognition as a Core Aspect of Visualization Psychology

Computer Science - Human-Computer Interaction - Abstract
There are numerous opportunities for engaging in research at the intersection of psychology and visualization. While most opportunities taken up by the VIS community will likely focus on the psychology of users, there are also opportunities for studying the psychology of designers. In this position paper, I argue the importance of studying design cognition as a necessary component of a holistic program of research on visualization psychology. I provide a brief overview of research on design cognition in other disciplines, and discuss opportunities for VIS to build an analogous research program. Doing so can lead to a stronger integration of research and design practice, can provide a better understanding of how to educate and train future designers, and will likely surface both challenges and opportunities for future research., Comment: IEEE VIS 2020 Workshop on Visualization Psychology (VisPsych)

Computer Science - Human-Computer Interaction - Abstract
Chartjunk is a popular yet contentious topic. Previous studies have shown that extreme minimalism is not always best, and that visual embellishments can be useful depending on the context. While more knowledge is being developed regarding the effects of embellishments on users, less attention has been given to the perspectives of practitioners regarding how they design with embellishments. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 data visualization practitioners, investigating how they understand chartjunk and the factors that influence how and when they make use of embellishments. Our investigation uncovers a broad and pluralistic understanding of chartjunk among practitioners, and foregrounds a variety of personal and situated factors that influence the use of chartjunk beyond context. We highlight the personal nature of design practice, and discuss the need for more practice-led research to better understand the ways in which concepts like chartjunk are interpreted and used by practitioners., Comment: IEEE 2020 Visualization Conference (VIS), short papers

Computer Science - Human-Computer Interaction - Abstract
Data visualization is becoming an increasingly popular field of design practice. Although many studies have highlighted the knowledge required for effective data visualization design, their focus has largely been on formal knowledge and logical decision-making processes that can be abstracted and codified. Less attention has been paid to the more situated and personal ways of knowing that are prevalent in all design activity. In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with data visualization practitioners during which they were asked to describe the practical and situated aspects of their design processes. Using a philosophical framework of design judgment from Nelson and Stolterman [23], we analyzed the transcripts to describe the volume and complex layering of design judgments that are used by data visualization practitioners as they describe and interrogate their work. We identify aspects of data visualization practice that require further investigation beyond notions of rational, model- or principle-directed decision-making processes., Comment: IEEE 2020 Visualization Conference (VIS), short papers

597.3 - Abstract
Understanding how the environment drives the pattern of adaptive radiation may be key to understanding tl1e role of ecology in evolution. The Lake Malawi Haplochomine cichlid fish radiation was seeded by riverine ancestors, yet extant riverine diversity is extremely low. Only Astatotilapia calliptera the putative ancestor of flock currently persists in both the lake and the rivers of the catchment. This presents us with a useful model for assessing tl1e role of environment in driving diversification within a single species. We predict that the contrast in disturbance regime may drive the difference in speciation rate between the two habitats. In tlus thesis, population genetic analysis, functional morphometries, and common garden experiments are used to investigate the level of variation between disturbed river populations and comparatively stable lake populations. The genetic analysis indicates minimal population structuring between Lake Malawi populations compared to within or between river systems. Morphometric data suggests that lake populations are locally diversifying despite this limited isolation. River morphologies are similar despite reduced mixing. Dietary analysis shows that differences in morphology are functional, with the key axis of variation ranging from hard-bodied animals to smaller non-animal resources. Common garden experiments show a clear trade-off between egg-size and number. The majority of sites including all river sites adopt a more conservative strategy focussing on high offspring number. One lake population adopts a high investment strategy. A comparison between lab reared morphology and wild caught morphologies shows that the majority of variation maintained in the wild is through plastic mechanisms. These results suggest that the unpredictability of the riverine environment constrains populations to bet-hedging strategies whilst the highly competitive nature of the lake promotes specialisation. This selection for specialisation could in turn lead to speciation, and may partly explain why speciation within Lake Malawi has been so spectacular

In recent years Java has matured to a stable easy-to-use language with the flexibility of an interpreter (for reflection etc.) but the performance and type checking of a compiled language. When we started using Java for astronomical applications around 1999 they were the first of their kind in astronomy. Now a great deal of astronomy software is written in Java as are many business applications. We discuss the current environment and trends concerning the language and present an actual example of scientific use of Java for high-performance distributed computing: ESA's mission Gaia. The Gaia scanning satellite will perform a galactic census of about 1000 million objects in our galaxy. The Gaia community has chosen to write its processing software in Java. We explore the manifold reasons for choosing Java for this large science collaboration. Gaia processing is numerically complex but highly distributable, some parts being embarrassingly parallel. We describe the Gaia processing architecture and its realisation in Java. We delve into the astrometric solution which is the most advanced and most complex part of the processing. The Gaia simulator is also written in Java and is the most mature code in the system. This has been successfully running since about 2005 on the supercomputer "Marenostrum" in Barcelona. We relate experiences of using Java on a large shared machine. Finally we discuss Java, including some of its problems, for scientific computing., Comment: Experimental Astronomy, August 2011

We provide a detailed analysis of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes in a wide range of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We apply solution-generating methods to three parametrised classes of scalar-tensor theory which lead naturally to general relativity in the weak-field limit. We restrict the parameters which specify these theories by the requirements imposed by the weak-field tests of gravitation theories in the solar system and by the requirement that viable cosmological solutions be obtained. We construct a range of exact solutions for open, closed, and flat isotropic universes containing matter with equation of state $p\leq \frac{1}{3}\rho$ and in vacuum. We study the range of early and late-time behaviours displayed, examine when there is a `bounce' at early times, and expansion maxima in closed models., Comment: 58 pages LaTeX, 6 postscript figures, uses epsf

We examine inflationary universe models driven by scalar fields with logarithmic potentials of the form $V(\phi) = V_0 \phi^p(\ln \phi)^q$. Combining the slow-roll approximation with asymptotic techniques, we identify regions of the potential where inflation may occur and obtain analytic expressions for the evolution of the field and the metric in these cases. We construct a family of exact solutions to the equations of motion with potentials resembling the above form and demonstrate their inflationary nature; deflationary and conflationary cosmological behaviours are also defined and identified. Finally, a computation of scalar density and tensor gravitational perturbations produced by the model is presented., Comment: 21 Pages + 4 Figures; compressed, tarred, uuencoded PostScript

We investigate the range of inflationary universe models driven by scalar fields possessing a general interaction potential of the form $V(\phi) = V_0 \phi^n \exp(-\lambda \phi^m)$. Power-law, de Sitter and intermediate inflationary universes emerge as special cases together with several new varieties of inflation. Analysing the behaviour of these models at the extrema of $\phi$ we derive sufficient constraints on the $m$ - $n$ parameter space such that inflation may occur as both an early and late-time phenomenon. We also compute the scalar and tensor perturbations produced in the model and compare these results with recent observations., Comment: 19 Pages, LATEX.

Astrophysics - Abstract
The meaning of the inflationary slow-roll approximation is formalised. Comparisons are made between an approach based on the Hamilton-Jacobi equations, governing the evolution of the Hubble parameter, and the usual scenario based on the evolution of the potential energy density. The vital role of the inflationary attractor solution is emphasised, and some of its properties described. We propose a new measure of inflation, based upon contraction of the comoving Hubble length as opposed to the usual e-foldings of physical expansion, and derive relevant formulae. We introduce an infinite hierarchy of slow-roll parameters, and show that only a finite number of them are required to produce results to a given order. The extension of the slow-roll approximation into an analytic slow-roll expansion, converging on the exact solution, is provided. Its role in calculations of inflationary dynamics is discussed. We explore rational-approximants as a method of extending the range of convergence of the slow-roll expansion up to, and beyond, the end of inflation., Comment: standard LaTeX (20 pages) with two postscipt figures appended
