O diagnóstico de doença de moyamoya foi confirmado por meio da angiografia cerebral diagnóstica com subtração. A revascularização cirúrgica foi proposta, porém recusada pelo paciente. Iniciou-se tratamento não invasivo com mono-antiagregação plaquetária e rosuvastatina, obtendo-se regressão parcial da estenose.

Voluntary, anonymous free gift-giving has become the dominant norm for blood donation for transfusion purposes, in view of its established ability to satisfy the needs for labile blood products that meet satisfactory conditions of safety and cost. But the economy of blood products is also the place for one of the main exceptions to the principle of non-commercialization of body parts. I show that there exists a genuine international plasma market, which provides the raw materials to produce blood protein products by pharmaceutical industries. The recent years have seen a considerable strengthening of the massive and globalized features of this market. I briefly describe the issues that this evolution raises, and I sketch some directions for a partial resolution of these issues. I explain why the development of contract fractionation appears both possible and desirable from an economic perspective in the present context.

The infrapatellar fat pad of Hoffa is an intracapsular structure which is a common site for inflammatory processes. However, it can also be involved by neoplastic pathologies. We report a case of synovial hemangioma in this location which presented a diagnostic challenge due to unusual clinical presentation. The patient was managed with multiple sessions of ultrasound-guided injection sclerotherapy with partial resolution of the lesion.

Objective: To study the efficacy of middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization for the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (SDH) and characterize its post-embolization volumetric resolution. Methods: Ten patients diagnosed with 13 cSDH underwent MMA embolization. SDH volumes were measured from time of initial discovery on imaging to pre-operative, post-operative, short-term and long-term follow-up. Time between procedure to obliteration was also measured. Volumetric analysis was done using the coniglobus formula, and recurrence rate as well as resolution timeline was defined using best-fit models. Results: Out of 10 patients, five were recurrent lesions, three were bilateral and seven unilateral cSDH. Average and median pre-operative volumes were 105.3 cc and 97.4 cc, respectively. Embolization on average was performed 21 days after discovery. Sixty percent of patients had concurrent antiplatelets or anticoagulation use. Forty percent underwent embolization treatment as the primary therapy. Recurrence was not seen in any patients treated with embolization. There were no peri- or post-operative complications. Five patients experienced complete or near-complete obliteration, while those with partial resolution showed a composite average of 75% volumetric reduction in 45 days. Post-embolization, the volumetric resolution followed an exponential decay curve over time and was independent of initial volume. Conclusion: MMA embolization contributed to a marked reduction in SDH volume post-operatively and can be used as a curative therapy for primary or recurrent chronic SDH.

Objective To compare the outcomes of the addition of silver nitrate cautery versus antiseptic cream alone in paediatric patients with recurrent epistaxis. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) Guidelines and a search of electronic information was conducted to identify all Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) and non-randomised studies comparing the outcomes of the addition of silver nitrate cautery versus antiseptic cream alone in paediatric patients with recurrent epistaxis. Treatment success and persistence of bleeding were primary outcome measures. Secondary outcome measures included treatment side effects. Fixed effects modelling was used for the analysis. Results Four studies enrolling 240 patients were identified. There was no significant difference between silver nitrate cautery group and antiseptic cream alone group in terms of complete resolution (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.07, P = 0.81), the partial resolution (OR = 1.02, P = 0.96) and persistence of bleeding (OR = 0.91, P = 0.71). For secondary outcomes, antiseptic nasal cream was associated with few side effects such as rash in one case and several complaints of bad smell or taste. Conclusions The addition of silver nitrate cautery is not superior to the use of antiseptic cream alone in paediatric patients with recurrent epistaxis as it does not improve treatment success or persistence of bleeding.

Case summary A 3-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat presented for further investigation of a swollen left eyelid and a hard, non-painful bony swelling over the left frontal sinus. Physical examination revealed no nasal discharge or airflow through the left nostril. A CT of the head revealed a left frontal sinus obstruction with expansile remodelling and osteolucency. Drainage of the frontal sinus obstruction was alleviated via placement of a temporary polyvinylchloride (PVC) stent that was left in place for 6 weeks. Purulent material removed from the frontal sinus returned a positive culture for Pseudomonas aeruginosa susceptible to marbofloxacin that was continued for 4 weeks, and for an additional 2 weeks after stent removal. A left-sided mucoid nasal discharge returned 3 months after removal of the stent. Repeat CT performed 20 months after surgery found the presence of a gas-filled frontal sinus and partial resolution in the amount of fluid within the mid and rostral nasal cavity. A repeat positive culture for P aeruginosa was also obtained. The exact cause of the chronic unilateral sinonasal obstruction remains unclear, but an underlying chronic rhinitis with secondary obstructive frontal sinusitis or sinus mucocoele with secondary nasal extension was suspected. Relevance and novel information Chronic rhinosinusitis in cats can be a challenging condition to treat and cure. This case illustrates the partial resolution of chronic unilateral sinonasal obstructive disease in a cat using a temporary PVC stent.

There are currently no actively recruiting prospective clinical trials investigating potential treatments. There are also no US Food and Drug Administration-approved medical treatments for chemotherapy-associated paronychia and no consensus on the best way to treat these common chemotherapy-induced events. Methods: A retrospective review of all cases presenting to a single dermatology private practice from June 2016 to January 2017 identified nine patients with chemotherapy-associated paronychia seeking treatment. Each patient was prescribed a topical solution comprised of 2% povidone–iodine in a dimethylsulfoxide vehicle that was prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy. Patients were seen at 3 week and 6 week follow-up visits. Results: All 9/9 patients demonstrated complete or partial resolution. The number of nails involved for each patient ranged from 4–12. There were a total of 58 nails affected in the case series, and 44/58 (76%) resolved overall. The treatment was well tolerated. Conclusion: The topical povidone–iodine/dimethylsufoxide solution described is very effective in alleviating the signs and symptoms of paronychia associated with chemotherapy. This novel combination warrants further investigation in randomized, controlled trials to further elucidate its clinical utility. Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of automated mechanical repositioning treatment (AMRT) for posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo ­(PC-BPPV). Patients and Methods: We reviewed all PC-BPPV patients admitted to our department between January and ­December 2016. The inclusion criteria mainly required conducting a diagnosis for PC-BPPV by using the Dix-Hallpike test, a PC-BPPV history within 1 month, no intake of medications for the last 48 h. Compared with the cases who received classical manual repositioning treatment (CMRT), the proportion of patients who underwent AMRT with a resolution within the 1-week follow-up session after initial treatment and a recurrence during the 6-month follow-up were evaluated. Results: A total of182 patients who underwent AMRT and 152 patients who underwent CMRT were included. Compared with the CMRT group, the AMRT group had a higher rate of complete or partial resolution and positional nystagmus at the 1 week follow-up (92.6 vs. 86.2%; p = 0.004). AMRT with less treatment cycles was more effective than CMRT (1.5 vs. 1.9; p < 0.001). After 6 months of follow-up, the cumulative recurrence rate of the AMRT group was significantly lower than that of the CMRT group (3.0 vs. 8.9%; p = 0.037). Conclusion: AMRT is a feasible and effective procedure for the resolution of PC-BPPV.

These two fine books, released within months of each other, use differing terms but resonating conceptual apparatuses to explore the “moral crisis” of contemporary China. For both authors, this crisis is a reality, and both of them offer prescriptions for its partial resolution. Both authors ground their perspectives in disciplines of the humanities—literary criticism for Haiyan Lee and philosophy for Jiwei Ci—and each takes what I would call a modernist perspective vis-a-vis China’s moral crisis. That is, they see the practices and dynamics of moral reasoning associated with traditional China as inadequate for a China that has modernized rapidly over the past 35 years. Moreover, each author sees the Maoist decades as having reinforced certain aspects of traditional moral reasoning and perceives the current regime’s reliance on remnants of Maoist/Leninist processes of governing as inimical to the development of healthier modes of moral reasoning. Their positing of an overlap between traditionalism and Maoism could be summed up by the title of Andrew G. Walder’s classic book, Communist Neo-Traditionalism. Finally, each author focuses on questions of selfhood and processes of developing the type of self that is able to reason morally.

Scleroderma diabeticorum is a rare dermatological condition that is found in patients with poorly controlled long-standing diabetes. This is characterized by symmetrical, wooden non-pitting induration of the neck, and the upper parts of the shoulders and back. Aetiology of the scleroderma diabeticorum is not well understood. However, the hyperglycaemia-related fibroblast proliferation and extra-cellular ground substance formation is thought to be the main reason for the associated skin changes. Treatment of this condition is a challenge. Good glycaemia control has demonstrated partial resolution in some individuals. However, some studies have not shown any improvement with good glycaemic control. Phototherapy with UVA-1, immunosuppressive drugs and frequency modulated electromagnetic neural stimulation (FREMS) have been successful to a reasonable extent in some patients.

Inflammatory optic disc neovascularisation (NVD) has been treated with periocular or systemic steroids, immunosuppressants, panretinal photocoagulation and bevacizumab. However, the role of intravitreal ranibizumab in inflammatory NVD has not been explored in the peer-reviewed indexed literature. In case 1, NVD and associated subhyaloid haemorrhage showed rapid and dramatic regression after intravitreal ranibizumab. Recurrence was noted 8 weeks after injection which was managed by oral steroids. In case 2, intravitreal ranibizumab led to partial resolution of NVD. The addition of steroids, azathioprine and panretinal photocoagulation led to further fibrosis of the neovascularisation. Ranibizumab may be an important adjunct to anti-inflammatory therapy in the management of inflammatory NVD.

A 9-year-old intact male Bluetick Coonhound presented for progressive subcutaneous emphysema of 5 days' duration due to a suspected tracheal tear. Cervical computed tomography (CT) and thoracic CT were performed after failure to identify the tracheal tear with tracheoscopy. A longitudinal tracheal tear was identified starting 4.3 cm cranial to the tracheal bifurcation and extending caudally over a distance of 3.6 cm. Severe pneumomediastinum, subcutaneous emphysema, and retroperitoneal gas were also present. A follow-up CT 7 days postoperatively confirmed the successful repair of the tear with partial resolution of the presurgical secondary pathology and the patient recovered uneventfully.

We give sufficient conditions for a Frobenius category to be equivalent to the category of Gorenstein projective modules over an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring. We then apply this result to the Frobenius category of special Cohen-Macaulay modules over a rational surface singularity, where we show that the associated stable category is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of a certain discrepant partial resolution of the given rational singularity. In particular, this produces uncountably many Iwanaga-Gorenstein rings of finite GP type. Chiral recognition through noncovalent interaction occurs in many biological systems. Structural characterization of chiral host–guest complexes can enhance the understanding of recognition mechanism. but such examples are relatively few. Chiral recognition and resolution of 1-phenylethylamine was studied where a binuclear Ni(II) complex acts as chiral host. Structural characterization showed that (R)-1-phenylethylamine forms a triangular assembly of three host–guests adducts through both H-bond and CH···π interactions. In contrast, use of (S)-1-phenylethylamine leads to formation of ∼11 A wide one-dimensional channels by the binuclear Ni(II) anionic complex where the chiral guest cation has been organized inside the channels in a zigzag fashion. Use of racemic amine yielded crystals having identical channel structure where S-amine and R-amine are inside the channels in a 55:45 ratio. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a powerful technique for enantioseparations due to its high separation efficiency, high versatility, speed of analysis and low consumption of samples and reagents. Non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis (NACE) appears as a promising technique to perform enantioseparations when the drugs, chiral selectors or samples are non-water soluble. Chiral separations have been performed by NACE mainly using alcoholic solvents as BGEs, with problems of current breakdowns and changes in the BGE composition, due to their high volatility. In this work, the suitability of DMSO as BGE in NACE has been evaluated. Different experimental variables affecting the enantioresolution of three drugs have been evaluated, finally achieving complete enantioresolution of two drugs (verapamil, Rs=1.5 and pindolol, Rs=2.0) and partial resolution of the third one (fenfluramine, Rs=1.2). DMSO has been demonstrated to be a good alternative to methanolic BGEs in NACE.

In our recent paper, we systematized an inverse algorithm to obtain quiver gauge theory living on theM2-branes probing the singularities of a special kind of Calabi-Yau fourfold which were complex cones over toric Fanoℙ3,ℬ1,ℬ2,ℬ3. These quiver gauge theories cannot be given a dimer tiling presentation. We use the method of partial resolution to show that the toric data ofℂ4and Fanoℙ3can be embedded inside the toric data of Fanoℬtheories. This method indirectly justifies that the two-node quiver Chern-Simons theories corresponding toℂ4, Fanoℙ3, and their orbifolds can be obtained by higgsing matter fields of the three-node parent quiver corresponding to Fanoℬ1,ℬ2,ℬ3,ℬ4threefold.

Reaction of nitrosochlorides of natural monoterpene hydrocarbons (+)-3-carene and (−)-α-pinene with L-amino acids and their methyl esters results in stereoselective formation of terpene–amino acids hybrids, which belong to the series of α-substituted amino oximes. The reaction with an excess of racemic DL-amino acids and their derivatives induces partial resolution of the amino acid components and formation of the diastereomeric mixtures of the terpene–amino acids hybrids, with diastereomeric excess varying from 0 to 100%.

A five-year-old, female, neutered boxer, with neuroanatomical signs consistent with a C1-C5 myelopathy, was diagnosed with a prosencephalic mass and associated severe cervicothoracic syringohydromyelia. After treatment with corticosteroids and lomustine, neurological examination was normal. Imaging repeated three months later showed significant reduction in both the size of the mass and the syringohydromyelia. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of a dog with syringohydromyelia secondary to a rostral brain mass that had clinical signs on presentation solely due to the syrinx, and the first reported case in a dog of partial resolution of syringohydromyelia after treatment solely with chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The current study was conducted to evaluate severe mucocutaneous toxicity during treatment with hydroxyurea (HU) in a large cohort of patients with Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). METHODS: Among 993 consecutive patients newly diagnosed with MPN at 4 centers in Rome between January 1980 and December 2009, 614 patients (277 men and 337 women with a median age of 64.4 years [interquartile range (IR), 54.4 years-72.7 years]) received HU. HU was administered as first-line treatment in 523 patients (85.2%) and as ≥ second-line treatment in 91 patients (14.8%). RESULTS: Mucocutaneous toxicity was reported in 51 patients (8.3%) after a median period from the initiation of HU treatment of 32.1 months (IR, 10.5 months-74.6 months) and a mean HU dose of 1085 mg (± 390 mg); 30 patients (58.8%) developed a painful ulcerative skin toxicity, mainly located in the perimalleolar area; 11 patients (21.6%) had oral aphthous ulcers; and 10 patients (19.6%) developed a nonulcerative skin toxicity with erythema and skin infiltration. After the mucocutaneous toxicity occurred, HU treatment was continued at the same dose in 5 patients (9.8%), reduced in 12 patients (23.5%), and temporarily discontinued in 7 patients (13.7%); the remaining 27 patients (52.9%) required a permanent drug discontinuation. After a median period of 4.3 months (IR, 2.4 months-9.0 months) from the onset of the skin toxicity, 39 patients (76.5%) had a complete resolution and 12 patients (23.5%) had improvement without complete resolution. CONCLUSIONS: Mucocutaneous toxicity during HU treatment is more common than expected and may present with different clinical features. Moreover, it often requires a permanent drug discontinuation and only a partial resolution is reported to occur in approximately 25% of patients. Cancer 2011;. © 2011 American Cancer Society.

Sieving gels are used in capillary gel electrophoresis to resolve DNA strands of different lengths. For complex samples, however, such as those encountered in metagenomic analysis of microbial communities or biofilms, length-based separation may mask the true genetic diversity of the community since different organisms may contribute same-length DNA with different sequences. There is a need, therefore, for DNA separations based on both the length and sequence. Previous work has demonstrated the ability of guanosine gels (G-gels) to separate four single-stranded DNA 76-mers that differ by only a few A/G base substitutions. The goal of the present work is to determine whether G-gels could be combined with commercial sieving gels in order to simultaneously separate DNA based on both length and sequence. The results are given for the four 76-mers and for a standard dsDNA ladder. Commercial sieving gels were used alone and in combination with G-gels. For the 76-mers, the combined medium was less efficient than the G-gel alone but was able to achieve partial resolution. The combined medium was at least as effective as the sieving gel alone at resolving the denatured DNA ladder and showed indications of sequence-based resolution as well, as supported by MALDI-MS. The results show that the combined sieving gel/G-gel medium retains the selectivity of the individual media, providing a promising approach to simultaneous length- and sequence-based DNA separation for metagenomic analysis of complex systems.

Background Non-traumatic distal biceps tendinopathy related to overuse, has not been previously reported in the literature. We describe the symptoms and signs, a novel injection technique onto the bicipital tuberosity of the radius and outcomes of this treatment. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed the clinical notes of 20 patients (24 elbows), in whom the diagnosis of distal biceps tendinopathy was made. Twenty-two of 24 elbows were treated with one or more cortisone injections. The patients were followed up via a telephonic questionnaire. Results Average duration of follow-up was 3 years and 4 months. Eighteen elbows returned to full function. Five elbows (four patients) had partial resolution of symptoms, and one had no relief. In these six elbows, symptoms had been ongoing for ≥ 8 months prior to injection. Conclusion Distal biceps tendinopathy is often misdiagnosed. The majority of cases respond well to steroid injections without the risk of rupture or neurological injury. Resolution of pain with restoration to previous function is more likely when symptoms have been present for less than 8 months.

Purpose This study reports the results of laparoscopic rectopexy in children. Methods Results were obtained from a prospective database for all laparoscopic rectopexy procedures performed for external prolapse in a tertiary referral centre from 2006 to 2013. Outcomes included recurrence of symptoms and/or visible prolapse as well as the need for further surgery Results Eighteen procedures including both suture and mesh rectopexy were performed in 11 patients. Six had solitary rectal ulcers. All patients had failed conservative management, including laxative therapy, and one patient had previously had a trial of injection of hypertonic saline. At a median follow up of 33months (6–75) complete resolution was seen in 7 cases and partial resolution, with some continuing symptoms, was seen in 1 patient. All suture rectopexy cases ultimately failed and required a redo rectopexy procedure. Three patients had persistent failure with recurrence of prolapse during the study period despite repeated procedures. There were no serious complications. Conclusions Laparoscopic mesh rectopexy can be safely performed in children and can lead to complete resolution of external prolapse. There is a cohort for whom it fails to relieve the problem. In this series there was a trend towards less recurrence with mesh rectopexy.

N‐Tosyl‐ and N‐methyl‐substituted sulfonimidoyl fluorides (2) have been synthesized from the corresponding chlorides by displacement with fluoride ion. S‐Phenyl‐N‐tosylsulfonimidoyl fluoride (2a) is a stable (persistent) shelf compound, which has been used for the synthesis of (S‐phenyl‐N‐tosylsulfonimidoyl)methyl isocyanides (4). The latter compounds form a new class of derivatives of methyl isocyanides, which, much like tosylmethyl isocyanides, form azoles by baseinduced cycloadditions to unsaturated substrates. Fluoride 2a has been partially resolved into its enantiomers.

Co-riparian parties on the Yarmouk river, the largest tributary to the Jordan, have been complicated by many political factors since the proclamation of the State of Israel in 1948. Conflicting water plans drawn up unilaterally jeopardized their benefits. The political settings between them are outlined and the attempts to forge tacit and explicit cooperation between them are discussed. The article reveals the difficulties encountered by Jordan as a result of lack of cooperation over its main water source, the Yarmouk. The potentials and events of near collision are enumerated and the partial resolution of conflict described. The conflicts awaiting resolution are addressed and the timing thereof suggested.

PURPOSE To document a case of contact lens-induced keratitis resembling central toxic keratopathy syndrome. METHODS A 23-year-old female developed an acute, central, stromal haze subsequent to soft contact lens overwear. Slit lamp examination revealed corrugated stromal "mud cracks," as seen in stage IV diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK). This was accompanied by relative corneal thinning and flattening with a hyperopic shift of approximately 6 diopters. RESULTS Eight weeks after discontinuing contact lens wear and after a 2-week tapering regimen of topical steroids, she had partial resolution of the central haze, partial increase in corneal thickness, steepness, and decrease in hyperopic shift. CONCLUSION The authors present a case with a history of soft contact lens overwear and a clinical presentation notably similar to the central toxic keratopathy syndrome, which has recently been reported after laser refractive surgery.

Studies on the pathogen Bacillus thuringiensis in Egypt and its possible role as a biological control agent have been reviewed. More emphasis in research was given to some lepidopterous cotton pests and few other species. Screening of various cultures of B. th. belonging to different serotypes revealed the most active strains for different insect species. Novel approaches have been developed which include introduction of agricultural and industrial by products as major components in fermentation media and these can be made use of for economic commercial production of this pathogen. Efforts have been made to develop feeding stimulants and bait formulations as a partial resolution to overcome the problem of short environmental persistence. New avenues towards the use of chemical additives with B. th. formulations were adopted and which resulted in enhancing their potency vs. Spodoptera littoralis through some biochemical reactions that occurred in the insect mid-gut. The mode of action of the pathogen has been explored in some insect species with reference to the morphological and chemical changes that occurred in the haemolymph. The safety of the pathogen to parasites and predators of some insect pests has been explored. The obvious effect of the pathogen on the moths of lepidoptera can be of value in suppressing the moth population. The achievements obtained so far have been discussed in the light of the future policy of pest control in Egypt. Besonderes Gewicht lag auf der Untersuchung von einigen an Baumwolle schadlichen Schmetterlingen. Experimente mit verschiedenen Kulturen von B. th. unterschiedlichen Serotyps fuhrten zur Findung der jeweils aktivsten Stamme fur die einzelnen Schadlingsarten. Es wurden neue landwirtschaftliche und industrielle Produkte als Komponenten der Zuchtmedien getestet, die zur kommerziellen Produktion des Pathogens geeignet sind. Anstrengungen wurden unternommen, um Frasstimulantien und Koderstoffe zu finden als Gegengewicht zu der relativ kurzen Haltbarkeit der Bacillus-Praparate im Freiland. Auch wurden neue chemische Zusatzstoffe entwickelt, um mit ihnen die Wirksamkeit von B. th. am Beispiel von Spodoptera littoralis uber eine Beeinflussung des Mitteldarmes zu steigern. Der morphologischchemische Wirkungsmechanismus des Pathogens wurde bei einigen Insektenarten naher untersucht. Weiterhin wurden die Nebenwirkungen auf Parasiten und Pradatoren betrachtet. Der auffallige Effekt des Pathogens bei schadlichen Lepidopteren ist deren erheblicher Populations-ruckgang. Die bisher gewonnenen Erkenntnisse wurden im Lichte der kunftigen Schadlingsbe-kampfung erortert.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the changes in B‐share discounts across 76 Chinese stocks around an important regulatory event to understand the importance of political risk in pricing stocks in emerging markets.Design/methodology/approachOn February 19, 2001, the Chinese Securities Regulatory Commission announced that Chinese residents would be allowed to own B‐share classes of stocks traded on both the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets. These share classes were previously restricted to foreign investors while domestic residents were only permitted to hold A‐share classes of stock and were typically priced at a significant discount. This regulatory change triggered a dramatic decline of prevailing B‐share discounts from 80 percent down to 40 percent.FindingsThe paper finds that the largest declines in the B‐share discounts around this regulatory event are concentrated in the firms with low government ownership stakes and are unrelated to the firms' risks, relative supplies of shares outstanding and liquidity attributes.Research limitations/implicationsThis surprising finding challenges the current wisdom about what influences the B‐share discount and particularly the role of political risk in explaining the discount puzzle.Originality/valueThe paper offers an alternative interpretation for the B‐share discount puzzle. The findings have important implications for China's future financial liberalization policies.

In this paper we analyze four examples of birational transformations between local Calabi-Yau 3-folds: two crepant resolutions, a crepant partial resolution, and a flop. We study the effect of these transformations on genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants, proving the Coates-Corti-Iritani-Tseng/Ruan form of the Crepant Resolution Conjecture in each case. Our results suggest that this form of the Crepant Resolution Conjecture may also hold for more general crepant birational transformations. They also suggest that Ruan's original Crepant Resolution Conjecture should be modified, by including appropriate "quantum corrections", and that there is no straightforward generalization of either Ruan's original Conjecture or the Cohomological Crepant Resolution Conjecture to the case of crepant partial resolutions. Our methods are based on mirror symmetry for toric orbifolds., 27 pages. Two British scientists, G.C. Simpson and C.T.R. Wilson, held contrasting views on the electrical polarity of thunderclouds for nearly half of the 20th century. Simpson's perspective was dominated by the measured charge on rain, by the breaking drop theory for the charging of raindrops, and later, by the branching behavior of lightning flashes. Wilson's view was dominated by his work on the field changes accompanying lightning, by his knowledge of the corona current from the ground beneath electrified clouds, and ultimately by his unifying global circuit hypothesis, requiring a source current to maintain a negatively charged Earth against dissipation. Simpson's observed tripole structure of thunderclouds provided partial resolution to the controversy, but the main positive dipole supported Wilson's view, which survives today.

We report the case of a patient who twice developed gynecomastia following tuberculosis treatment. An 18-year-old male developed painful bilateral gynecomastia after three months of treatment with the isoniazid-rifampin-pyrazinamide regimen. Partial resolution of gynecomastia was achieved at the end of treatment. The patient was retreated with the same regimen eight years later, and gynecomastia recurred after six months of treatment. Hormone levels were normal, and a mammogram revealed bilateral gynecomastia. The isoniazid was discontinued, and the gynecomastia was partially resolved by the end of treatment. Four years later, gynecomastia was not detected. We conclude that isoniazid-related gynecomastia completely resolves when the medication is discontinued. Therefore, pharmacological and surgical treatment should be avoided.

We then use these sequences to obtain a free finitely generated bimodule partial resolution of ℤS. Also we show that for groups properties FDT and FHT coincide.

The partial resolution is described of a series of racemic trans-4-[5-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-2,5-dimethylpyrrolidine-1-oxyl-2-yl]benzoic acids (1), which are the key intermediates for the synthesis of chiral organic radical liquid crystalline compounds and are crystallized to give racemic compounds. Racemic acid 1 [(±)-1] with a long alkyl chain (C7 to C13) could be resolved by the conventional diastereomeric salt formation using (R)- or (S)-1-phenylethylamine (2) as the resolving agent, whereas resolution of (±)-1 with a short alkyl chain (C4 to C6) was unsuccessful. Use of six equiv of (R)- or (S)-2 for the initial diastereomeric salt formation of (±)-1 with a C7-C13 alkyl chain, followed by recrystallization of the resulting salts once or twice, gave 2S,5S- or 2R,5R-enriched 1, respectively, in an ee range of 75–92% and with an overall recovery of 11–27%, based on the original quantity of (±)-1. The black hole information problem has been a challenge since Hawking's original 1975 paper. It led to the discovery of AdS/CFT, which gave a partial resolution of the paradox. However, recent developments, in particular the firewall puzzle, show that there is much that we do not understand. I review the black hole, Hawking radiation, and the Page curve, and the classic form of the paradox. I discuss AdS/CFT as a partial resolution. I then discuss black hole complementarity and its limitations, leading to many proposals for different kinds of `drama.' I conclude with some recent ideas., Comment: 45 pages. Fluorination of benzene, in the vapour phase, over manganic fluoride at temperatures between 200°and 350°gave a complex mixture of polyfluorocyclohexenes and dimeric material; monofluorobenzene and unreacted benzene were also present in the products of fluorination at 200°to 300°. Partial resolution of the mixture was achieved to give octa- and hepta-fluorocyclohexenes. These olefins gave dibromo-addition compounds and were oxidised readily to fluorodibasic acids. Dehydrofluorination of a heptafluorocyclohexene and oxidation of the resultant diolefin afforded difluoromalonic and tetrafluorosuccinic acids. Oxidation of the dimeric material gave tetrafluorosuccinic acid.

The present studies were undertaken to examine the effects of manipulating delay-interval task (Study 1) and timing of feedback (Study 2) on acquisition and retention. Participants completed a 100-item cumulative final examination, which included 50 items from each laboratory examination, plus 50 entirely new items. Acquisition and retention were examined in Study 1 in which delayinterval task, length of delay until feedback was delivered, and the opportunity to answer until correct (AUG) were manipulated and, in Study 2, in which the number of items completed before feedback was delivered and AUC were manipulated. Delays longer than 5 s negatively affected learning (Study 1) when participants engaged in a delay-interval distraction task; enhancement was observed when individual test items and correct responses were reviewed during the interval. Significant decrements in learning were observed in Study 2 in the absence of a distraction task when more than 1 test item was completed prior to the delivery of feedback. The present outcomes add to the growing body of evidence that retention is maximized when test items are completed individually and exited with knowledge of the correct response, that the opportunity to answer until correct minimizes perseverative inaccurate responding and, for multiple-choice test items, that immediate feedback is a more effective facilitator of retention than delayed feedback.

5-(1-(2-Methoxynaphthalen-1-yl)naph- thalen-2-yloxy)-1H-tetrazole as the first aryloxy tetrazole with axial chirality was synthesized. Partial resolution was achieved using (S)-proline and methylbenzylamine as the resolving agents. Best results were obtained using methylbenzylamine with 75–85% ee. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. * BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This study reports and compares the anatomic and visual acuity outcomes of patients treated with either thermal laser photocoagulation or photodynamic therapy for circumscribed choroidal hemangioma with associated serous retinal detachment. * PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective, consecutive, interventional case series of patients treated for symptomatic circumscribed choroidal hemangioma. * RESULTS: Thirteen of 23 patients (57%) treated with thermal laser photocoagulation exhibited complete resolution of subretinal fluid, 6 (26%) had partial resolution of subretinal fluid, and 4 (17%) had persistent subretinal fluid despite therapy. At 3 months posttreatment, visual acuity was improved in 6 (26%), stable in 13 (57%), and worsened in 4 (17%) of 23 patients. All 5 patients who underwent photodynamic therapy had complete resolution of subretinal fluid. At 3 months posttreatment, visual acuity improved in 4 (80%), remained stable in 1 (20%), and worsened in 0 (0%) patients. * CONCLUSIONS: Photodynamic therapy shows similar if not better anatomic and visual acuity results than thermal laser photocoagulation when treating symptomatic circumscribed choroidal hemangioma.
