Contains fulltext : 58515.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND: Identification of mononuclear cellular infiltrates in skeletal muscle tissue is the histological cornerstone of the diagnosis of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM). However, these infiltrates are not always present. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether MHC class I antigen expression on the sarcolemma, which is absent in normal muscle tissue, is upregulated in IIM and could serve as an additional diagnostic test. METHODS: Expression of MHC class I antigens was studied in 224 muscle samples of 61 adult patients with IIM (9 dermatomyositis, 23 polymyositis, 29 inclusion body myositis) and 163 controls (normal subjects and patients with various neuromuscular disorders) in a prospective blinded manner. RESULTS: The sensitivity of the test for diagnosing IIM was 78% (95% confidence interval (CI), 66% to 88%), with a specificity of 95% (91% to 98%). The sensitivity before the start of immunosuppressive treatment was 89% (76% to 96%). The sensitivity was not changed by including all patients who had been on immunosuppressive treatment for less than four weeks before muscle biopsy (sensitivity 90% (79% to 97%)). False positive results were found in only seven controls (4%), six of whom had a muscular dystrophy. CONCLUSIONS: Detection of sarcolemmal MHC class I is a valid test for IIM. It is not affected by the short term use of immunosuppressive agents (less than four weeks) and it should be incorporated in the histological evaluation when the diagnosis of IIM is under consideration or needs to be excluded.

Diagnostics of interferences sources (amplitude, frequency range, radiation characteristics, etc.), appearing within transport environment, and usage of appropriate technical solutions of systems (i.e. shielding, reliability structures), allows for safe implementation of safety surveillance of human beings, properties and communication means. Abstract

The paper presents issues associated with the impact of electromagnetic interference on static converters, which exploitation in a railway transport environment. The measurements of an electromagnetic field emitted by a static converter were shown. Designs of this kind are exploitation in railway facilities, therefore, they should not disturb the functioning of other equipment, the rail traffic control systems, in particular. As a result of the EMC tests, it was concluded that the permissible values of conducted interference emissions were exceeded. An analysis of the obtained results enabled developing a research model, and a further reliability and exploitation analysis, taking into account electromagnetic interference. This, in turn, enabled determining a relationship allowing to determine the probability of a static converter staying in a state of full ability. The presented discussions regarding a static converter, taking into account electromagnetic interference, allow for the numerical assessment of different types of solutions (technical and organizational), which can be implemented in order to mitigate the impact of electromagnetic interference on a system’s functioning.

Abstract

Onaangepaste en hoge snelheden zijn belangrijke factoren aangaande verkeersonveiligheid en leefbaarheid. Diverse maatregelen, zoals aanpassingen aan de infrastructuur, informatiecampagnes en handhaving worden reeds toegepast. Er wordt daarentegen nog nauwelijks gebruik gemaakt van in-car maatregelen zoals Intelligente Snelheids Aanpassing (ISA) voor het terugdringen van snelheid. De effecten van ISA blijken positief maar nog steeds is er weinig sprake van een coherente implementatie. Aangezien de effecten zich voornamelijk op het maatschappelijke vlak voordoen en veranderingen in de bestaande processen teweeg brengen is de overheid de meest aangewezen partij om als “Change Agent” op te treden in het realiseren van een gerichte implementatie. Stappen die de overheid zou moeten nemen zijn het creëren van de noodzakelijke voorwaarden, het onder de aandacht brengen van de positieve effecten van ISA bij de direct betrokkenen, en het bepalen van de wijze van implementatie.

32. Microstructure of Dispersions of Lamellar Droplets Carrying Anchoring Hydrophobically Endcapped Poly(sodium acrylate)s as Novel Steric Stabilizers

Abstract

We have studied the influence of anchoring hydrophobically single-endcapped poly(sodium acrylate)s on the microstructure and colloidal stabilization of self-assembled lamellar droplets formed from a mixture of anionic and nonionic surfactants in concentrated aqueous electrolyte solutions. A fluorescently labeled hydrophobically endcapped poly(sodium acrylate) has been synthesized and characterized using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopic techniques; it appears that the fluorophore has considerable freedom of internal rotation. Using this labeled poly(sodium acrylate), the presence of an adsorbed polymer layer bound to the surface of the droplets was imaged by confocal scanning laser microscopy, providing visual evidence that the droplets are sterically stabilized. Laser diffraction and refractive index measurements were employed to determine average particle sizes of the colloidal particles, and it was established that increasing the molecular weight of the hydrophilic (pendant) backbone at a constant (hydrophobic) anchor density, or increasing the concentration of polymer in the dispersion at constant molecular weight, results in a decrease of the average droplet size. This is in agreement with theoretical predictions that an increased lateral pressure in the adsorbed layer, due to a higher polymer segment density near the surface, is relieved by increasing the curvature of the lamellar droplets. Finally, the adsorption of hydrophobically endcapped polymers to lamellar droplets has been described in terms of a Freundlich isotherm, reflecting the degressive increase of the amount of polymer adsorbed onto the surface of the droplets with increasing polymer concentration. Again, an increase of lateral pressure with surface coverage is held responsible for this effect.

33. Rheology of Concentrated Dispersions of Sterically Stabilized Polydisperse Lamellar Droplets

Abstract

The rheological behavior of concentrated dispersions of sterically stabilized lamellar droplets has been studied as a function of the molecular weight and of the amount of adsorbed hydrophobically endcapped poly(sodium acrylate)s. The chemical compositions of the samples are identical to those described before. Despite the polydispersity of the sample, scaling laws and equations that are well established in the rheology of monodisperse colloidal suspensions can be successfully applied. Although the amount of added stabilizing polymer at constant molecular weight hardly influences the elastic modulus (G‘) as a function of (core) volume fraction of lamellar droplets (φlam), increasing the polymer molecular weight at constant grafting density results in a pronounced increase of the elastic modulus. The ratio of particle radius to adsorbed layer thickness (R/Δ) decreases with molecular weight, thereby increasing the effective volume fraction. A peculiar effect occurs if the polymer molecular weight drops below 1000. Polymer molecules penetrate into the lamellar droplets, and φlam is increased (at constant surfactant concentration). This so-called “building-in” effect can be used to thicken lamellar dispersions. Thickening can also be induced by addition of “bridging polymers”, which carry multiple hydrophobic anchors, linking several droplets. Concomitant adverse effects of bridging flocculation can be counteracted by admixing of hydrophobically endcapped polymers; the resulting dispersions are characterized by enhanced shear-thinning behavior and good physical stability.

35. Lyotropic Phases of Dodecylbenzenesulfonates with Different Counterions in Water

Abstract

The lyotropic phase behavior of (technical grade) dodecylbenzenesulfonates (DoBS) is strongly influenced by the type of counterion and the relative amount of water. Phase diagrams are composed for the following systems:  HDoBS/water, NaDoBS/water, (HDoBS + NaDoBS 1:1)/water, LiDoBS/water, KDoBS/water, CsDoBS/water, Ca(DoBS)2/water, NaDoBS/water/NaCl, and NaDoBS/water/CsCl. The phases were characterized by light microscopy, freeze-fracture electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and macroscopic appearance. The phase diagrams all contain large areas of lamellar phases. The appearance of the lamellar phases differs along this series, in particular regarding swelling behavior, either with or without a micellar phase next to the lamellar phase, and formation of large, rather irregular lamellar units versus smaller, perfectly spherical lamellar topologies (so-called lamellar droplets). LiDoBS shows, in addition, a hexagonal phase between 25 and 50 wt %. Explanations for the occurrence of the different phases are given in molecular terms and in terms of interactions between bilayers and between aggregates.

Abstract

This paper presents a method to control an operation process of a complex technical object, with the use of trivalent diagnostic information. Also, a general diagram of the complex technical object was presented, and its internal structure was described. A diagnostic analysis was conducted, as a result of which sets of the functional elements of the object and its diagnostic signals were determined. Also, the methodology of the diagnostic examination of the technical system was presented. The result was a functional and diagnostic model, which constituted the basis for initial diagnostic information, which is provided by the sets of information concerning the elements of the basic modules and their output signals. The theoretical results obtained in the present study were verified in practice on the example of a complex and reparable technical object. It belongs to the group of technical equipment for which a short time of shutdowns is required (an ineffective use of the object).

"Project: F GEN (M5)"., The first part of this report discusses six different methods of measurement techniques of stem analysis in Pinus radiata. The methods were tested for accuracy and precision, and their efficiency evaluated by a subsequent time study. It was shown that measurement of one average radius per disc was the most efficient method. Measurement of more radii gave slightly greater accuracy and precision, but this improvement was disproportionate to the extra time it required. Program package GRANRAD is described in the second part of the report in which guidelines are provided for the preparation of basic data in a form suitable for processing. Worked examples are appended to illustrate the inputs and outputs of the programs.

41. Sampling of fish and crustaceans at the cooling water intake of an estuarine power plant: A comparison with stow net fishery

Abstract

Fish and crustaceans were sampled in November 1995 in the cooling water intake of the nuclear power plant Doel (Zeeschelde Estuary, Belgium) and by stow nets, to determine possible differences in species abundance, species biomass, and mean species length between the two methods. A total of 39 species were caught, 32 by stow net and 33 at the intake, with 26 species being caught by both methods. The abundance and biomass were several times higher at the intake than in the stow net samples. Although the average length was higher in the stow net samples in the case of most species, almost all length classes of each population were also present in the samples from the cooling water intake. The results suggest that the cooling water intake is an effective means to collect fish and crustaceans, and reflects the species abundance in the surrounding waters, if the method is combined with surveys to separate local events from long-term trends.

Abstract

The safety of public utility facilities is a function not only of effectiveness of the electronic safety systems, used for protection of property and persons, but it also depends on the proper functioning of their power supply systems. The authors of the research paper analysed the power supply systems, which are used in buildings for the access control system that is integrated with the closed-circuit TV. The Access Control System is a set of electronic, electromechanical and electrical devices and the computer software controlling the operation of the above-mentioned elements, which is aimed at identification of people, vehicles allowed to cross the boundary of the reserved area, to prevent from crossing the reserved area and to generate the alarm signal informing about the attempt of crossing by an unauthorised entity. The industrial electricity with appropriate technical parameters is a basis of proper functioning of safety systems. Only the electricity supply to the systems is not equivalent to the operation continuity provision. In practice, redundant power supply systems are used. In the carried out reliability analysis of the power supply system, various power circuits of the system were taken into account. The reliability and operation requirements for this type of system were also included.
