Accelerometery is revolutionising the field of behavioural ecology through its capacity to detect the fine-scale movements of animals resulting from their behaviour. Because it is often difficult to infer the behaviour of wildlife on a continuous basis, particularly for cryptic species, accelerometers potentially provide powerful tools for remote monitoring of their behavioural responses to the environment.The goal of this study was to provide a detailed, calibrated methodology, including practical guidelines, to infer the behaviour of free-ranging animals from acceleration data. This approach can be employed to reliably infer the time budget of species that are difficult to observe in certain environments or at certain times of the day. To this end, we trained several behavioural classification algorithms with accelerometer data obtained on captive roe deer, then validated these algorithms with data obtained on free-ranging roe deer, and finally predicted the time-budgets of a substantial sample of unobserved free-ranging roe deer in a human-dominated landscape.The best classification algorithm was the Random Forest which predicted five behavioural classes with a high overall level of accuracy (≈ 90%). Except for grooming (34-38%), we were able to predict the behaviour of free-ranging roe deer over the course of a day with high accuracy, in particular, foraging head down, running, walking and immobile (68-94%). Applied to free-ranging individuals, the classification allowed us to estimate, for example, that roe deer spent about twice as much time foraging head-down, walking or running during dawn and dusk than during daylight or night-time.By integrating step by step calibration and validation of accelerometer data prior to application in the wild, our approach is transferable to other free-ranging animals for predicting key behaviours in cryptic species.

The behavioural trade-off between foraging and risk avoidance is expected to be particularly acute during gestation and lactation, when the energetic demands of reproduction peak. We investigated how female roe deer, an income breeding ungulate, adjust their management of this trade-off during the birth period in terms of foraging activity and habitat use. We showed that activity levels of reproductive females more than doubled immediately following parturition, when energy demand is highest. Moreover, reproductive females increased their use of open habitat during daytime and ranged closer to roads, but slightly further from refuge woodland, compared to non-reproductive females. However, these post-partum modifications in behaviour were particularly pronounced in late-parturient females who adopted a more risk prone tactic, presumably to compensate for the fitness handicap of their late-born offspring. In income breeders, individuals that give birth late may be forced to trade risk avoidance for resource acquisition during peak allocation to reproduction, likely with significant fitness consequences.

Seasonal migrations are central ecological processes connecting populations, species and ecosystems in time and space. Land migrations, such as those of ungulates, are particularly threatened by habitat transformations and fragmentation, climate change and other environmental changes caused by anthropogenic activities. Mountain ungulate migrations are neglected because they are relatively short, although traversing highly heterogeneous altitudinal gradients particularly exposed to anthropogenic threats. Detecting migration routes of these species and understanding their drivers is therefore of primary importance to predict connectivity and preserve ecosystem functions and services. The populations of Alpine ibexCapra ibex, an iconic species endemic to the Alps, have all been reintroduced from the last remnant source population. Because of their biology and conservation history, Alpine ibex populations are mostly disconnected. Hence, despite a general increase in abundance and overall distribution range, their conservation is strictly linked to the interplay between external threats and related behavioral responses, including space use and migration. By using 337 migratory tracks from 425 GPS-collared individuals from 15 Alpine ibex populations distributed across their entire range, we (i) identified the environmental drivers of movement corridors in both spring and autumn and (ii) compared the abilities of three modeling approaches to predict migratory movements between seasonal ranges of the 15 populations. Trade-offs between energy expenditure, food, and cover seemed to be the major driver of migration routes: steep south-facing snow-free slopes were selected while high elevation changes were avoided. This revealed the importance of favorable resources and an attempt to limit energy expenditures and perceived predation risk. Based on these findings, we provided efficient connectivity models to inform conservation of Alpine ibex and its habitats, and a framework for future research investigating connectivity in migratory species.

The time that animals spend travelling at various speeds and the tortuosity of their movement paths are two of the many things that affect space-use by animals. In this, high turn rates are predicted to be energetically costly, especially at high travel speeds, which implies that animals should modulate their speed according to path characteristics. When animals move so as to maximize distance and minimize metabolic energy expenditure, they travel most efficiently at the speed that gives them a minimum cost of transport (COTmin), a well-defined point for animals that move entirely in fluid media. Theoretical considerations show though, that land animals should travel at their maximum speed to minimize COT, which they do not, instead travelling at walking pace. So, to what extent does COTmin depend on speed and turn rate and how might this relate to movement paths? We measured oxygen consumption in humans walking along paths with varied tortuosity at defined speeds to demonstrate that the energetic costs of negotiating these paths increase disproportionately with both speed and angular velocity. This resulted in the COTmin occurring at very low speeds, and these COTmin speeds reduced with increased path tortuosity and angular velocity. Logged movement data from six free-ranging terrestrial species underpinned this because all individuals turned with greater angular velocity the slower their travel speeds across their full speed range. It seems, therefore, that land animals may strive to achieve minimum movement costs by reducing speed with increasing path variability, providing one of many possible explanations as to why speed is much lower than currently predicted based on lab measurements of mammalian locomotor performance.

Such changes are particularly critical in alpine ecosystems, where strong climate limitations on plant growth make seasonal synchronization imperative for the growth, reproduction and survival of herbivores. However, despite the pivotal role of resource-use strategies on the performances of such species, few studies have explicitly assessed the mechanistic impact of climate change on their diets. We aimed to fill this gap by studying the effect of spring onset on the dietary composition and quality of a medium-size alpine herbivore while considering density-dependent processes and age- and sex-specific differences in foraging behavior. Using an exceptional, long-term (24 years) direct individual-based dietary monitoring of a Pyrenean chamois population (Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica), we showed that ongoing earlier onsets of spring are leading to an earlier access to high-quality forage and therefore a higher diet quality at a fixed date, without apparent changes in diet composition. We also showed that at high densities, intraspecific competition reduced diet quality by driving animals to feed more on woody plants and less on nutritious forbs and graminoids. By assessing the mechanistic effects of global warming on the dietary patterns of species at the center of trophic networks, this study is an essential step for predictive models aiming at understanding the ongoing ecosystem consequences of the global climatic crisis.

L’expression et la gestion des emotions dans une negociation policiere de crise sont souvent evoquees mais rarement etudiees de facon scientifique. Dans le cadre d’une collaboration entre la recherche universitaire et des forces d’intervention de police (en France et en Suisse), nous avons retranscrit 14 negociations reelles. Nous nous inspirons de la facon dont Rogan et Hammer (1995) decoupaient les sequences et calculaient un score d’affect dans trois cas reels d’incidents. Sur un echantillon plus important, nous mobilisons des methodes issues de l’analyse statistique et informatique des donnes textuelles et de l’analyse automatique des contenus. Les premiers resultats conduisent a renoncer aux indexations emotionnelles automatiques classiques. En effet, le contexte de violence et de perte des normes de conversation perturbe les indexations. On propose donc une nouvelle indexation en contexte. Les analyses statistiques exploratoires permettent alors de visualiser la dynamique emotionnelle des echanges entre instigateurs et negociateurs, ainsi que son evolution dans les phases des crises. Dans un premier temps, le negociateur identifie la nature de l’expression emotionnelle (structurelle vs conjoncturelle). Dans une deuxieme etape, l’instigateur exprime des emotions negatives d’approche auxquelles le negociateur repond par des expressions positives d’evitement. Dans un troisieme temps, l’instigateur peut evoluer vers une emotion negative d’evitement auxquelles le negociateur repond par des expressions positives d’approche. Enfin, le dernier temps sera celui de la neutralisation emotionnelle de la part de l’instigateur, qui permet au negociateur de conquerir l’espace lexical et de l’amener vers la resolution pacifique de la crise. On decrit les consequences theoriques et methodologiques de ces resultats ainsi que les implications pour la formation et le suivi des professionnels de la negociation de crise.

From the chloroform extract of Larrea tridentata (Ses. et Moc ex DC.) Coville two new cyclolignans (1 and 2) and six known compounds (3–8) were isolated and characterized. The new compounds were elucidated as 4,4’-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-6,7’-cyclolignan (1) and 3,4-dihydroxy-3’,4’-dimethoxy-6,7’-cyclolignan (2). Compound 1 was methylated to obtain the semi-synthetic derivatives 1a, 1b and, 1c. The structural elucidation of compounds was performed by analysis of 1D and 2D NMR spectral data, HRMS and, X-ray diffraction (compound 1). Antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of compounds was determined against nine clinical isolates of drug-resistant bacteria and two strains of M. tuberculosis (drug-sensitive H37Rv and drug-resistant G122) as well as against three cancer cell lines. Results showed the methylated derivative 1a as the most active antibacterial compound, displaying the best activities against gram-positive bacteria and M. tuberculosis with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) in a range of 6.25–12.5 μg/mL and 12.5−25 μg/mL respectively, having the same activity as the control drug levofloxacin against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 6.25 μg/mL) and linezolid-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MIC 12.5 μg/mL). Cyclolignan 5 was two-fold more active towards (LR) S. epidermidis. Tested compounds were devoid of cytotoxic activity.

International audience; Life histories are strongly age dependent, notably linked to the onset of reproductive maturity and subsequent senescence. Consequently, ageing is predicted to impact behaviour, through the expression of either mating tactics in males or neonatal antipredator tactics in females. However, the influence of ageing, and the associated reproductive activity, on spatial behaviour remains poorly investigated. In this regard, we quantified age- and sex-specific intra-annual variation in movement rates and space use of two large herbivores with contrasting life histories: the roe deer, Capreolus capreolus, an asocial species with a territorial male mating strategy and a hider neonatal tactic, and the Mediterranean mouflon, Ovis gmelini musimon × Ovis sp., a gregarious species with a roaming male mating strategy and a follower neonatal tactic. We expected age-related differences to be mostly related to (1) age-specific mating tactics during the rut for males and the presence/absence of offspring for females, and (2) experience and/or locomotory senescence otherwise. During the rutting period, older roe deer males travelled greater daily distances than younger males due to patrolling behaviours for territory defence, whereas older mouflon males travelled less than younger males, which often adopted coursing tactics to mate with females. During the birth period, reproductive females had smaller home ranges than nonreproductive females in roe deer, whereas no marked differences were observed in mouflon females. The most marked age-related variation in space use of mouflon occurred outside the reproductive periods; specifically, the oldest individuals travelled less far and had a smaller home range (females only) than younger individuals. Our findings illustrate how space use tactics vary within and between populations of large herbivores, providing strong evidence that age and reproductive activity are major determinants of their spatial behaviour. © 2020 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour

International audience; Animals perceive human activities as risky and generally respond with fear-induced proactive behaviors to buffer the circadian patterns of lethal and nonlethal disturbances, such as diel migrations (DMs) between risky places during safe nighttime and safer places during risky daytime. However, such responses potentially incur costs through movement or reduced foraging time, so individuals should adjust their tolerance when human activities are harmless, through habituation. Yet this is a challenging cognitive task when lethal and nonlethal risks co-occur, forming complex landscapes of fear. The consequences of this human-induced complexity have, however, rarely been assessed. We studied the individual DM dynamics of chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra rupicapra), 89 GPS-tracked individual-years, from/to trails in the French Alps in areas with co-occurring lethal (hunting) and nonlethal (hiking and skiing) disturbances, with different intensities across seasons. We developed a conceptual framework relying on the risk-disturbance hypothesis and habituation to predict tolerance adjustments of chamois under various disturbance contexts and across contrasted seasonal periods. Based on spatial and statistical analyses combining periodograms and multinomial logistic models, we found that DM in relation to distance to a trail was a consistent response by chamois (similar to 85% of individuals) to avoid human disturbance during daytime, especially during the hiking and hunting periods. Such behavior revealed a low tolerance of most chamois to human activities, although there was considerable interindividual heterogeneity in DM. Interestingly, there was an increased tolerance among the most disturbed diel migrants, potentially through habituation, with chamois performing shorter DMs in areas highly disturbed by hikers. Crucially, chamois that were most human-habituated during the hiking period remained more tolerant in the subsequent harvesting period, which could increase their risk of being harvested. In contrast, individuals less tolerant to hiking performed longer DMs when hunting risk increased, and compared to hiking, hunting exacerbated the threshold distance to trails triggering DMs. No carryover effect of hunting beyond the hunting period was observed. In conclusion, complex human-induced landscapes of fear with co-occurring disturbances by nature-based tourism and hunting may shape unexpected patterns of tolerance to human activities, whereby animal tolerance could become potentially deleterious for individual survival.

In polygynous ungulates, males invest time and energy to reproductive activities during the rut and this involvement is expected to increase with age due to different mating tactics in young versus adult males. In contrast, mating period is expected to be less costly for females for which late gestation and lactation are the most energetically demanding periods. However, empirical supports of these hypotheses through direct measures of reproductive effort are still limited in ungulate species, particularly in males. In addition, this general pattern may be modified in populations facing selective harvesting on adult males, where young males may experience less competition to mate and invest more energy during the rut. We investigated these hypotheses by studying the age- and sex-specific variations of kidney fat reserves from pre- to post-rut periods in a trophy-hunted population of Mediterranean mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon × Ovis sp.), a polygynous dimorphic mountain ungulate. Females were found to build up energy from the pre-rut to the post-rut periods, most likely to face with the subsequent costs of gestation/lactation that occur few months later. Conversely, kidney fat mass strongly decreased similarly in both young and mature males, and with the same magnitude, suggesting a strong investment of males of all ages in this population. This might be related to the selective hunting pressure on mature males this population is facing with. This result supports the need for more empirical and comparative studies to better grasp the influence of trophy hunting on reproductive effort in male ungulates.

Three organic extracts were prepared from the leaves of Solanum chrysotrichum Schldl. From the methanol extract were isolated two new steroidal saponins (1, 2), and three known compounds (3, 4, and 5). The new saponins were elucidated as 6-α-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-β-D-quinovopyranosyl-(25S)-5α-spirostan-3β-ol (1) and 6-α-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-β-D-quinovopyranosyl-(23R,25S)-5α-spirostan-3β,23β-ol (2). The structural elucidation of compounds was performed by analysis of 1D and 2D NMR spectral data and HRMS. Antibacterial activity was displayed by the hexane and CH2Cl2 extracts against carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC = 250 μg/mL) and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MIC = 125 μg/mL). The known saponin (3) was the only compound active against bacteria, showing activity against all the gram-positive bacteria (MIC = 12.5 μg/mL). Antitubercular activity was observed only for the hexane extract (MIC = 250 μg/mL). The antifungal and antileishmanial activities were determined for the steroidal saponins, but they were devoid of antifungal activity at the concentrations tested. Antileishmanial activity was shown only by the saponin (1) (IC50: 21.64 ± 1.21 μg/mL).

Background: Chronic lung diseases are characterized by airway inflammation and remodelling of the lung parenchyma that triggers considerable impairment of respiratory function. Objective: In this study, two compounds belonging to the N-acylhydrazone class were evaluated, aiming to identify new therapeutic agents for pulmonary inflammatory diseases. Materials and Methods: The acute toxicity of 2-cyano-N'-(3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzylidene)- acetohydrazide (JR-12) and N'-benzylidene-2-cyano-3-phenylacrylohydrazide (JR09-Bz) was evaluated. Afterwards, they were tested in models of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic asthma and pleurisy, bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis, in addition to mucolytic activity. Results and Discussion: The compounds did not show toxicity at the dose of 2,000 mg/kg, and no animal died. On OVA-induced pleurisy, animals treated with JR-12 or JR09-Bz at a dose of 10 mg/kg (orally) showed significant inhibition of the leukocyte infiltrate in the bronchoalveolar lavage by 62.5% and 61.5%, respectively, compared to the control group. The compounds JR-12 and JR09-Bz were also active in blocking the allergic asthmatic response triggered by OVA, reducing the leukocyte infiltrate by 73.1% and 69.8%, respectively. Histopathological changes and mast cell migration in treated animals with JR-12 or JR09-Bz were similar to treatment with the reference drugs dexamethasone and montelukast. JR-12 and JR09-Bz also reversed airway remodeling in animals on the bleomycin-induced fibrosis model compared to the control group. Furthermore, it was observed that N-arylhydrazone derivatives showed expectorant and mucolytic activities, increasing mucus secretion by 45.6% and 63.8% for JR-12 and JR09-Bz, respectively. Conclusion: Together, the results show that JR-12 and JR09-Bz showed promising activity against airway inflammation, as well as low toxicity.

The 29th Annual GP2A (Group for the Promotion of Pharmaceutical chemistry in Academia) Conference was a virtual event this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and spanned three days from Wednesday 25 to Friday 27 August 2021. The meeting brought together an international delegation of researchers with interests in medicinal chemistry and interfacing disciplines. Abstracts of keynote lectures given by the 10 invited speakers, along with those of the 8 young researcher talks and the 50 flash presentation posters, are included in this report. Like previous editions, the conference was a real success, with high-level scientific discussions on cutting-edge advances in the fields of pharmaceutical chemistry.

Background: In a study recently published by our research group, the isoxazoline-acylhydrazone derivatives R-99 and R-123 presented promising antinociceptive activity. However, the mechanism of action of this compound is still unknown. Objective: This study aimed to assess the mechanisms involved in the antinociceptive activity of these compounds in chemical models of pain. Methods: Animals were orally pretreated and evaluated in the acetic acid-, formalin-, capsaicin-, carrageenan- and Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA)-induced pain models in mice. The effects of the compounds after pretreatment with naloxone, prazosin, yohimbine, atropine, L-arginine, or glibenclamide were studied, using the acetic acid-induced writhing test to verify the possible involvement of opioid, α1-adrenergic, α2-adrenergic or cholinergic receptors, and nitric oxide or potassium channels pathways, respectively. Results: R-99 and R-123 compounds showed significant antinociceptive activity on pain models induced by acetic acid, formalin, and capsaicin. Both compounds decreased the mechanical hyperalgesia induced by carrageenan or CFA in mice. The antinociceptive effects of R-99 and R-123 on the acetic acid-induced writhing test were significantly attenuated by pretreatment with naloxone, yohimbine or atropine. R-99 also showed an attenuated response after pretreatment with atropine and glibenclamide. However, on the pretreatment with prazosin, there was no change in the animals' response to both compounds. Conclusion: R-99 and R-123 showed antinociceptive effects related to mechanisms that involve, at least in part, interaction with the opioid and adrenergic systems and TRPV1 pathways. The compound R-99 also interacts with the cholinergic pathways and potassium channels.

Pim kinases (proviral integration site for Moloney murine leukemia virus kinases) are overexpressed in various types of hematological malignancies and solid carcinomas, and promote cell proliferation and survival. Thus, Pim kinases are validated as targets for antitumor therapy. In this context, our combined efforts in natural product-inspired library generation and screening furnished very promising dibenzo[b,d]furan derivatives derived from cercosporamide. Among them, lead compound 44 was highlighted as a potent Pim-1/2 kinases inhibitor with an additional nanomolar IC50 value against CLK1 (cdc2-like kinases 1) and displayed a low micromolar anticancer potency towards the MV4-11 (AML) cell line, expressing high endogenous levels of Pim-1/2 kinases. The design, synthesis, structure–activity relationship, and docking studies are reported herein and supported by enzyme, cellular assays, and Galleria mellonella larvae testing for acute toxicity.

The management of infectious diseases in wildlife reservoirs is challenging and faces several limitations. However, detailed knowledge of host–pathogen systems often reveal heterogeneity among the hosts’ contribution to transmission. Management strategies targeting specific classes of individuals and/or areas, having a particular role in transmission, could be more effective and more acceptable than population-wide interventions. In the wild population of Alpine ibex (Capra ibex—a protected species) of the Bargy massif (French Alps), females transmit brucellosis (Brucella melitensis) infection in ~90% of cases, and most transmissions occur in the central spatial units (“core area”). Therefore, we expanded an individual-based model, developed in a previous study, to test whether strategies targeting females or the core area, or both, would be more effective. We simulated the relative efficacy of realistic strategies for the studied population, combining test-and-remove (euthanasia of captured animals with seropositive test results) and partial culling of unmarked animals. Targeting females or the core area was more effective than untargeted management options, and strategies targeting both were even more effective. Interestingly, the number of ibex euthanized and culled in targeted strategies were lower than in untargeted ones, thus decreasing the conservation costs while increasing the sanitary benefits. Although there was no silver bullet for the management of brucellosis in the studied population, targeted strategies offered a wide range of promising refinements to classical sanitary measures. We therefore encourage to look for heterogeneity in other wildlife diseases and to evaluate potential strategies for improving management in terms of efficacy but also acceptability. Par l’etude textometrique d’un corpus d’articles de la presse quotidienne regionale (PQR), notre article se propose d’interroger la notion de « resemantisation » du territoire (Jolivet, Lena, 2000, p. 9) dans le contexte de la fusion des regions Languedoc-Roussillon et Midi-Pyrenees (2014-2016). Il s’agira de mettre en lumiere au prisme du discours mediatique local (La Depeche du Midi, Midi Libre, L’Independant, La Montagne, Le Populaire du Centre …) les paliers de construction identitaire autour du nouveau territoire regional. Nous observerons notamment les discours s’inscrivant dans le contexte du processus du choix du nom de la nouvelle region, avec une attention particuliere portee aux mobilisations lexicales autour du toponyme « Occitanie ».

Migration of ungulates (hooved mammals) is a fundamental ecological process that promotes abundant herds, whose effects cascade up and down terrestrial food webs. Migratory ungulates provide the prey base that maintains large carnivore and scavenger populations and underpins terrestrial biodiversity (fig. S1). When ungulates move in large aggregations, their hooves, feces, and urine create conditions that facilitate distinct biotic communities. The migrations of ungulates have sustained humans for thousands of years, forming tight cultural links among Indigenous people and local communities. Yet ungulate migrations are disappearing at an alarming rate (1). Efforts by wildlife managers and conservationists are thwarted by a singular challenge: Most ungulate migrations have never been mapped in sufficient detail to guide effective conservation. Without a strategic and collaborative effort, many of the world's great migrations will continue to be truncated, severed, or lost in the coming decades. Fortunately, a combination of animal tracking datasets, historical records, and local and Indigenous knowledge can form the basis for a global atlas of migrations, designed to support conservation action and policy at local, national, and international levels.

International audience; 1. The timing of birth has a predominant influence on both the reproductive success of the mother and the life-history trajectory of her offspring. Because early growth and survival are key drivers of population dynamics, there is an urgent need to understand how global change is affecting reproductive phenology and performance. However, identifying when and where birth occurs is often difficult in the wild due to the cryptic behaviour of females around parturition, although this information may also help managers to protect reproductive females and newborn against human disturbance. While several approaches to identify parturition based on movement metrics derived from GPS monitoring have previously been proposed, their performance has not been evaluated over a range of species with contrasted movement characteristics.2. Here, we present a novel approach to detect parturition by combining data on animal movements, activity rate and habitat use. Using machine learning approaches, we evaluated the relative and combined performance of each category of metrics in predicting parturition for three large herbivores with contrasted life histories: a hider-type species, the roe deer Capreolus capreolus and two follower-type species, the Mediterranean mouflon Ovis gmelini musimon x Ovis sp. and the Alpine ibex Capra ibex.3. We first showed that detection of parturition was much improved when birth-related modifications in the habitat use and activity rate of the mother were considered, rather than relying on movement metrics only. We then demonstrated that our approach was highly successful (76%-100% of events correctly identified) in detecting parturition in both follower and hider species. Furthermore, our approach generated estimates for peak birth date and the proportion of parturient females that were comparable with those based on direct observations at the population scale. Finally, our approach outperformed the most commonly employed methods in the literature which generally failed to identify non-reproductive females for the three studied species, and provided birth timing estimates that only poorly match the true parturition date.4. We suggest that by combining sources of information, we have developed a standardised methodological approach for inferring parturition in the wild, not only for large herbivores but also for any species where parturition induces marked behavioural changes in the mother.

In particular, habitat fragmentation generates increased densities of linear landscape features that can impede movements. While the influence of these features on animal movements has been intensively investigated, they may also play a key role at broader spatial scales (e.g. the home range scale) as resources, cover from predators/humans, corridors/barriers or landmarks. How space use respond to varying densities of linear features has been mostly overlooked in large herbivores, in contrast to studies done on predators. Focusing on large herbivores should provide additional insights to understand how animals solve the trade-off between energy acquisition and mortality risk. Here, we investigated the role of anthropogenic (roads and tracks) and natural (ridges, valley bottoms and forest edges) linear features on home range features in five large herbivores. We analysed an extensive GPS monitoring database of 710 individuals across nine populations, ranging from mountain areas mostly divided by natural features to lowlands that were highly fragmented by anthropogenic features. Nearly all of the linear features studied were found at the home range periphery, suggesting that large herbivores primarily use them as landmarks to delimit their home range. In contrast, for mountain species, ridges often occurred in the core range, probably related to their functional role in terms of resources and refuge. When the density of linear features was high, they no longer occurred predominantly at the home range periphery, but instead were found across much of the home range. We suggest that, in highly fragmented landscapes, large herbivores are constrained by the costs of memorising the spatial location of key features, and by the requirement for a minimum area to satisfy their vital needs. These patterns were mostly consistent in both males and females and across species, suggesting that linear features have a preponderant influence on how large herbivores perceive and use the landscape.
