Objective: Recently, studies reported the emergence and increasing popularity of the alternate use of acetaminophen and ibuprofen. The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical effectiveness of acetaminophen alone with an alternative regimen of acetaminophen and ibuprofen in hospitalized infants aged 9-24 months with fever of non bacterial origin. Methods: The study was performed between March 2006 and December 2007, in pediatric center of two hospitals in Urmia. Patients were randomly separated into two groups. Eligible cases were febrile hospitalized patients aged between 9 and 24 months; whose rectal temperature was +38.5degrees C. Infants of case group received 10 mg/kg ibuprofen alternating with 15 mg/kg acetaminophen every four hours. Infants of control group received 15 mg/kg acetaminophen every four hours. Temperature of patients in the two groups was registered 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 hours after drug administration. The study was completed when each group received 35 cases. Findings: Seventy infants were divided into two groups. The case group consisted of 19 males and 16 females, in control group there were 18 males and 17 females. The results revealed significant difference between the two groups in lowering fever at 4, 5, 7 and 8 hours after treatment was initiated, but there was no significant difference at 2 hours after drug administration. Conclusion: An alternating treatment of acetaminophen (15 mg/kg) and ibuprofen (10mg/kg) 4 hours later is more effective than acetaminophen in lowering fever in 9 to 24 month old infants. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and treatment of enuresis among primary-school children living in Oromieh city, Islamic Republic of Iran. A questionnaire was answered by parents of 3500 selected students at the annual school enrolment in summer 2004. The frequency of nocturnal enuresis was 7.7%. Enuresis frequency was significantly higher among boys (8.6%) than girls (6.7%). Treatment methods used were: medication, water restriction, awaking for voiding and enuresis alarm in 57.8%, 18.1%, 11.5% and 2.6% of cases respectively. The fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics includes derivatives of the drug ciprofloxacin. These substances have recently been advocated for the treatment of cancer. In the current study, we examined the cytotoxicity and apoptosis-inducing potential of a novel synthetic ciprofloxacin derivative in the human myeloid leukemia KG1-a cell line. With an IC 50 of 25µM, this ciprofloxacin derivative, 7-(4-(2-(benzhydryloxy)-2-oxoethyl) piperazin-1-yl)-1-cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-4-oxo-1,4 dihydroquinoline-3- carboxylic acid (4-BHPCP), was an active drug. Through Hoechst 33,258 staining and Annexin V/PI double staining experiments, the apoptotic activity of the 4-BHPCP was assessed morphologically. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to assess changes in the expression level of certain apoptosis-related genes, including Bcl-2, Bax, and Survivin (qRT PCR). The results of the qRT PCR analysis demonstrated that 4-BHPCP promotes apoptosis in the KG1-a cell line by down-regulating Survivin and Bcl2, up-regulating Bax, and increasing the Bax/Bcl2 transcripts in a time-dependent manner. These results imply that this novel chemical may be a promising therapy option for acute myeloid leukemia., (© 2023. Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of urinary tract infection (UTI) in neonates with prolonged jaundice., Materials and Methods: Newborn infants with jaundice lasted more than 2 weeks were included in this study. Patients who had other signs or symptoms were excluded. Workup of prolonged hyperbilirubinemia was performed, including direct Coomb's test, blood group of the neonate and the mother, complete blood count, blood smear, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), reticulocyte count, serum level of bilirubin (unconjugated and conjugated), thyroid function tests (serum thyroxine [T4] and thyroid-stimulating hormone), urinalysis, and suprapubic urine culture. Pediatric nephrologists carried out further investigation including kidney function tests, renal ultrasonography, voiding cystourethrography, and Technetium Tc 99m dimercaptosuccinic acid renal scintigraphy for patients with a positive urine culture for microorganisms., Results: Of 100 neonates who were evaluated, 43 were boys and 57 were girls. All of the neonates were breastfed. Six suffered from UTI (4 boys and 2 girls). Reflux was detected on voiding cystourethrography in 1 and cortical defect in the kidney on renal scan in 2 boys., Conclusion: In our region, with a high rate of breastfeeding, UTI remains as an important cause of prolonged jaundice. Despite the high rate of urogenital system abnormality accompanied by neonatal UTI, there was not a significant difference between the signs and symptoms of jaundice in patients with and without UTI. Performing urine cultures should be considered as a routine procedure in the evaluation of every infant with prolonged jaundice.

We determined the time till diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip in Urmia, Islamic Republic of Iran. A total of 1100 infants (530 boys and 570 girls) aged 1.5-4.5 months attending university outpatient clinics for vaccination during June 2001 to January 2002 were examined for developmental dysplasia of the hip. Ortalani and Barlow methods and sonography were used for diagnosis. Of 105 suspected cases, 10 were confirmed with developmental dysplasia of the hip (2 boys and 8 girls): 7 were diagnosed during the study and only 3 cases had been diagnosed previously. This late diagnosis is far greater than reported in other studies.

Yogurt helps in treatment and prevention of diarrhea. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of consumption of local factory yogurt, which is made with pasteurized milk, on moderately dehydrated hospitalized infants aged 6-24 months with acute non-bloody and non-mucoid diarrhea. Eighty moderately dehydrated breast-feeding children aged between 6-24 months with acute non-bloody and non-mucoid diarrhea for fewer than four days were included in the study. Patients were randomly separated into two groups according to their treatment. Infants in the case group received at least 15 ml/kg/day of pasteurized cow milk yogurt orally plus routine hospital treatment. Infants in the control group received routine hospital treatment as in the case group. Weight gains, period of hospitalization, and reduction in diarrhea frequency during hospitalization period of the two groups were compared. Mean duration of hospitalization (days), weight gain, and reduction in diarrhea frequency were 2.7 +/- 0.91 vs 3.1 +/- 0.74 days, 435 +/- 89.20 vs 383 +/- 98.9 g, and 4.30 +/- 1.74 vs 3.60 +/- 1.23 times for case and control groups, respectively. Significant differences were observed in mean hospitalization days (p=0.035), reduction in diarrhea frequency (p=0.049) and weight gain (p=0.017). This study recommends universal use of yogurt in acute non-bloody diarrhea.
