Abstract

Negli ultimi anni è notevolmente accresciuto l’interesse rivolto all’importanza dell’osso subcondrale e del suo ruolo patogenetico nel danno delle superfici articolari; parallelamente sono state sviluppate nuove tecniche specifiche per il trattamento di questo tipo di patologia. Attualmente due soli scaffolds sono stati impiegati in clinica per il trattamento di lesioni osteocondrali: TruFit® (Smith & Nephew, Andover, MA) e Maioregen® (Fin-Ceramica S.p.A., Faenza, Italy). Sebbene i risultati a livello di studi preliminari siano ancora controversi, l’utilizzo di questa tipologia di scaffold per trattare difetti della cartilagine e dell’osso sottostante sembra essere promettente.

Abstract

The paper focuses on the recent results achieved using at best the technology developed for the RFX-mod real time control system of MHD modes, which provides control features unique in the worldwide fusion experimental program. The paper aims at highlighting the successful technological aspects that have led to the outstanding scientific achievements obtained in the machine recent operation, including a dramatic increase in plasma duration and a significant decrease in magnetic perturbations. RFX-mod addresses the MHD mode control by acting on the magnetic field configuration at the boundary. The approach is not limited to the stabilization of Resistive Wall Modes (RWMs) in RFX-mod, but it also aims at acquiring an experimental knowledge on the MHD mode control that can be relevant for high beta discharges in tokamaks. To the purpose, an ad-hoc field correction coil system has been installed, consisting of 192 saddle coils covering the whole torus surface. The coils are arranged in 48 poloidal arrays, each made up of 4 equispaced coils. Each coil is fed independently. By means of this actuating system, magnetic field poloidal and toroidal harmonic components (m, n) can be generated with m=0, n=0 to 24 and m=1, n=-23 to 24. The control system is based on a modular hardware and software infrastructure, capable to fulfill the tight system requirements in terms of input/output channels (>700/>250), real time data flow (>2 Mbyte/s), computation capability (>1 GFLOP/s), and real time constraints. The control system, which has been extensively and routinely used in the operation of RFX-mod since the commissioning, provides a very powerful environment for interaction with MHD modes and for their control. Two basic control strategies have been developed: the Selective Virtual Shell (SVS) and the Mode Control (MC). The former aims at canceling all modes (Virtual Shell concept) except for selected preset ones (Selectivity concept). The Selectivity concept allows operating without interfering with the vertical equilibrium field (m=1, n=0), allows studying the growth of selected unstable RWMs, and facilitates producing Quasi-Single Helicity plasmas. The MC scheme aims at interacting with single or multiple modes. In this strategy, the regulators act directly on the modes by means of complex gains that can account for mode rotation.

Abstract

The RFX reversed field pinch experiment has been modified (RFX-mod) to address specific issues of active control of MHD instabilities. A thin shell (tau(Bv)similar to 50 ms) has replaced the old thick one (tau(Bv)similar to 500 ms) and 192 (4 poloidal x 48 toroidal) independently powered saddle coils surround the thin shell forming a cage completely covering the torus. This paper reports the results obtained during the first year of operation. The system has been used with various control scenarios including experiments on local radial field cancellation over the entire torus surface to mimic an ideal wall ('virtual shell') and on single and multiple mode feedback control. Successful virtual shell operation has been achieved leading to: a 3-fold increase in pulse length and well controlled 300 ms pulses(similar to 6 shell times) up to similar to 1MA plasma current; one order of magnitude reduction of the dominant radial field perturbations at the plasma edge and correspondingly 100% increase in global energy confinement time. Robust feedback stabilization of resistive wall modes has been demonstrated in conditions where rotation does not play a role and multiple unstable modes are present.

Abstract

The RFX device (Padova, Italy) has evolved in time from the passive control of the magnetic field configuration to the active control of both the field errors and the m=0 field harmonics. Encouraging results were obtained in terms of reduction of localized plasma-wall interaction and of induced rotation of MHD modes: on this basis the RFX load assembly has been recently modified, reducing by a factor of ten the time constant of the stabilizing shell and covering the whole plasma surface by a system of 192 saddle coils, each of them independently fed by a fast amplifier. Moreover, the new toroidal field power supply allows to produce robust m=0 rotating field harmonics, to drag the locked modes by non-linear coupling among different modes. These features realize the most powerful control system of plasma dynamics in any fusion device, with the best space resolution and the fastes response time. Specific real-time control technologies and software tools have been developed with the aim of offering a variety of control scenarios: driven rotation of MHD modes, controlled formation of Quasi-Single Helicity states, feedback stabilization of resistive wall modes, combinations of the above schemes. The work is supported by theoretical simulations of plasma response to the various control actions performed by the digital regulators and the fast amplifiers. The scientific programme to be pursued by means of these real-time control tools is considered to be highly relevant not only for Reverse Field Pinches, but also for Tokamaks, in particular when operating under advanced confinement scenarios.

Abstract

Polarimetry measurements of Faraday rotation on Tore Supra are systematically affected by spurious oscillations that may seriously hinder the reconstruction of plasma current profiles. The same behavior has also been regularly observed on other experiments, such as JET and as RFX. Causes of this phenomenon are interferences between the probing beam and stray radiations having the same frequency. It perturbs the intensity of the signals from the detectors installed on the two orthogonal polarization channels. Experimental tests confirm the dependence of the oscillation amplitudes on the Faraday angle as predicted by the analytical and numerical description of the phenomenon. Special care must be taken to eliminate stray beams: When the stray beam polarization is parallel to the incident one, a relative ratio of the electric field amplitudes <1% has been found to be acceptable (error <0.06°) but a much lower ratio must be achieved when polarization is perpendicular. Such oscillations can be also present on polarimeters using beams with modulating polarization. For existing and future polarimeters, special care should be taken to make sure that all the possible sources of stray beams are sufficiently minimized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The modified RFX is a very flexible device used for a variety of control schemes for MHD instabilities and for advanced reverse field pinch scenarios. Relative to the previous machine, RFX-mod has a thin Cu shell with vertical field penetration time τS, lowered from 450 to 50 ms and shell/plasma proximity from b/a ≤ 1.24-1.1. Toroidal equilibrium is feedback-controlled and new power supplies provide better Bφ control. Newly designed graphite tiles protect the vessel from localized power deposition. A mesh of 192 external saddle coils, supervised by a digital feedback system, controls radial fields due to field errors and MHD modes. The paper presents an overview of the very encouraging results obtained using both new and 'standard' advanced operational modes in the current range 0.3-1 MA. A dramatic improvement of plasma performance was obtained by using the saddle coils to cancel all the radial field components, an operation mode dubbed virtual shell (VS). The toroidal voltage was lowered by more than 25% and the pulse length was tripled, up to 7 times the τS. Steady-state RFP pulses are now limited only by the applied volt-seconds. The improved magnetic boundary also has an effect on the tearing modes underlying the sustainment of the RFP, whose core amplitude is more than halved. The VS combined with new schemes for the active rotation of the MHD dynamo modes has allowed us to obtain reliable and well-controlled long RFP pulses in the MA current range. This results in a 100% increase in the particle and energy confinement time relative to the previous experiment and opens the possibility of exploring the machine performance in the 2 MA design range. © 2007 IAEA.

However, some complex clinical conditions require bone regeneration in too large quantity, and tissue engineering approach was developed to favor the regeneration of a new functional tissue. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as a promising alternative to the traditional surgical techniques. The purpose of this mini-review is to investigate the role of MSCs in clinical practice for bone regeneration, documenting the state of art and indentifying future research directions.We performed a search of the literature on PUBMED database between 2001 and 2011 using the key words "MSC and bone regeneration". Inclusion criteria were clinical studies regarding the use of MSC in bone regeneration, for both bone repair and metabolic bone diseases, and in English language. References from selected papers were also screened.Our search resulted in 516 articles. Among these a total of 18 articles were included: 12 case series, 5 case reports and 1 comparative studies.MSCs represent an exciting and promising stem cell population for regeneration of bone in skeletal diseases, especially when tissue engineering or biomaterials are applied. However, literature results are limited, because of the small number and the low quality of trials, the lack of controls and the short follow-up. Researchers have to perform more high quality studies in order to document results and increase the potential of MSCs use in clinical practice, to develop a minimally invasive treatment to favor high quality bone tissue regeneration.
