3. Design of a multi-energy system under different hydrogen deployment scenarios

Abstract

Multi Energy Systems (MES) are effective means to increase Renewable Energy Sources (RES) penetration in the energy system and therefore to move toward a decentralized low-carbon system. Several energy vectors can be integrated together to exploit synergies in a MES framework, such as electricity, heat and hydrogen. The latter is one of the most promising energy carriers to promote widespread use of MES. Predictive management and well-defined sizing methodology are mandatory to achieve maximum performance out of MES. In this study a grid-connected MES consisting of a photovoltaic (PV) plant, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) as a programmable Combined Cooling Heat and Power (CCHP) source, is modelled. Natural gas is considered as an alternative fuel to pure hydrogen. Mixed Integer Linear Programming and Genetic Algorithm are used respectively to solve operation and sizing problems. A single-objective optimization approach, including emission factors as optimization constraints, is carried out to find the optimal configuration of the MES. Several future scenarios are studied, considering different percentages of hydrogen in the gas mixture and comparing the techno-economic performance of the system with respect to a pure hydrogen fueling scenario. Results showed that the environmental objective within the design optimization, promote the use of hydrogen, especially in scenarios with high share of green hydrogen.

Abstract

Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HRESs) can rely on the integration of multiple renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Those are effective means to increase the exploitation of local renewable energy sources in the Distributed Generation (DG) paradigm concept. The design of HRES is usually performed matching load and production profiles in a long- to medium-term time horizon with the aim to optimize energy performance with respect to costs. In this work, a multi-objective parameter is defined to identify the optimal configuration of the hybrid system. Costs, renewable energy self-consumption and emission factors are included in the functional parameter to be targeted. Production and disposal emission factors are evaluated by means of a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) for PV and batteries in order to show how this would affect the sizing of the HRES. Moreover, the effects of a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system on the performance and the design of a residential HRES in analyzed when both electric and thermal loads are considered in the energy management strategy. A beneficial effect of the TES inclusion is observed, resulting in system downsizing at same energy and emission performance, as well as in a lower LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) and higher PV energy selfconsumption. Abstract

A distributed web-based system for temporal and spatial power quality analysis has been realized and tested. Connecting by internet local instruments able to perform high accuracy measurements in real time, the Power Quality information, locally measured, can be sent to a remote central server which aim is to plot them and stored the data for future analysis. The remote instruments have been realized, tested and placed in two Italian cities, Palermo and Rome, where actually work while the server works in Rome. The web application allows to select the single instrument and to show its stored PQ information.

Abstract

This article describes a new instrument for power quality (PQ) measurements based on the Raspberry-Pi. This is the latest step of a long study started by the Electric and Electronic Measurements Laboratory of “Roma Tre” University 12 years ago. During this time, the Laboratory developed and refined instrumentation for high accuracy power quality measurements. Through its own architecture, the new instrument allows the use of the Raspberry instead of a personal computer (PC). The data acquired and locally processed are then sent to a remote server where they can be shown to users. Imagines of the system and of the data prove the activity of the system.
