In conclusion, the papers collected in this Special Issue summarize significant advances in the field of optical sensors, with specific contributions in sensor technology and applications of fiber Bragg gratings, resonators and spectroscopy. The performance of this integrated sensor is demonstrated using glucose solutions (0.05-0.3 g/mL) and the sensor response is shown to be dynamic and reversible. The refractive index sensor exhibits a linear response in the refractive index range of 1.333-1.358 RIU (refractive index unit), with a sensitivity of 32.4 RIU SP -1 sp and a resolution of 2 × 10 SP -3 sp RIU at the refractive index of water. This paper is an overview of current gyroscopes and their roles based on their applications. The considered gyroscopes include mechanical gyroscopes and optical gyroscopes at macro- and micro-scale. Particularly, gyroscope technologies commercially available, such as Mechanical Gyroscopes, silicon MEMS Gyroscopes, Ring Laser Gyroscopes (RLGs) and Fiber-Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs), are discussed. Slot waveguides are becoming more and more attractive optical components, especially for chemical and bio-chemical sensing. In this paper an accurate analysis of slot waveguide fabrication tolerances is carried out, in order to find optimum design criteria for either homogeneous or absorption sensing mechanisms, in cases of low and high aspect ratio slot waveguides. In particular, we have focused on Silicon On Insulator (SOI) technology, representing the most popular technology for this kind of devices, simultaneously achieving high integration capabilities, small dimensions and low cost. An accurate analysis of single mode behavior for high aspect ratio slot waveguide has been also performed, in order to provide geometric limits for waveguide design purposes. Finally, the problem of coupling into a slot waveguide is addressed and a very compact and efficient slot coupler is proposed, whose geometry has been optimized to give a strip-slot-strip coupling efficiency close to 100%. In this paper, the investigation and detailed modeling of a cascaded Raman laser, operating in the midwave infrared region, is described. The device is based on silicon-on-insulator optical waveguides and a coupled resonant microcavity. Theoretical results are compared with recent experiments, demonstrating a very good agreement. Design criteria are derived for cascaded Raman lasers working as continuous wave light sources to simultaneously sense two types of gases, namely C2H6 and CO2, at a moderate power level of 130 mW. A guided-wave chemical sensor for the detection of environmental pollutants or biochemical substances has been designed. The sensor is based on an asymmetric directional coupler employing slot optical waveguides. The use of a nanometer guiding structure where optical mode is confined in a low-index region permits a very compact sensor (device area about 1200 μm²) to be realized, having the minimum detectable refractive index change as low as 10-5. Silicon-on-Insulator technology has been assumed in sensor design and a very accurate modelling procedure based on Finite Element Method and Coupled Mode Theory has been pointed out. Sensor design and optimization have allowed a very good trade-off between device length and sensitivity. In this paper, the detailed modelling of Raman amplification in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) guided-wave resonant microcavities is developed for the first time. Theoretical results are compared with experiments in literature for either racetrack or microdisk resonators, demonstrating very good agreement. Investigation of resonant microcavity parameters, including pump and Stokes coupling factors and cavity lengths, is presented and their influence on pump enhancement factor is discussed. In this paper a new semiempirical large signal thermal model of GaAs MESFETs is proposed for DC characterization. The model includes a third order dependence of fitting parameters on bias conditions and three thermal fitting parameters. A number of GaAs MESFETs, each very different from a geometrical and technological point of view, have been characterized as a function of temperature and modelled with high accuracy. The CPU extraction time results are moderate in any example. Results have been compared with the Rodriguez–Tellez model, showing improvements in accuracy of better than 30%. This paper presents results of numerical modeling of a modified design of an optical sensor based on segmented periodic silicon oxynitride (SiON) grating evanescently coupled with silicon wire. This segmented grating works as a leaky waveguide, which filters input power from a broadband optical source and radiates it as an outcoming optical beam with both a small wavelength band and a small beam divergence. The radiation angle strongly depends on the refractive index of the grating environment and provides sensor interrogation by measuring the far field pattern in the focal plane of the lens, which is placed near the sensor element. The device concept was verified by direct numerical modeling through the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and provided moderate intrinsic limit of detection (iLOD) ~ 0.004 RIU with a possible iLOD ~ 0.001 RIU for 10 mm-long structures. The ion-sensitive field-effect transistor is a well-established electronic device typically used for pH sensing. The usability of the device for detecting other biomarkers in easily accessible biologic fluids, with dynamic range and resolution compliant with high-impact medical applications, is still an open research topic. Here, we report on an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor that is able to detect the presence of chloride ions in sweat with a limit-of-detection of 0.004 mol/m3. The device is intended for supporting the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis, and it has been designed considering two adjacent domains, namely the semiconductor and the electrolyte containing the ions of interest, by using the finite element method, which models the experimental reality with great accuracy. According to the literature explaining the chemical reactions that take place between the gate oxide and the electrolytic solution, we have concluded that anions directly interact with the hydroxyl surface groups and replace protons previously adsorbed from the surface. The achieved results confirm that such a device can be used to replace the traditional sweat test in the diagnosis and management of cystic fibrosis. Recently, non-Hermitian Hamiltonians have gained a lot of interest, especially in optics and electronics. In particular, the existence of real eigenvalues of non-Hermitian systems has opened a wide set of possibilities, especially, but not only, for sensing applications, exploiting the physics of exceptional points. In particular, the square root dependence of the eigenvalue splitting on different design parameters, exhibited by 2 × 2 non-Hermitian Hamiltonian matrices at the exceptional point, paved the way to the integration of high-performance sensors. The square root dependence of the eigenfrequencies on the design parameters is the reason for a theoretically infinite sensitivity in the proximity of the exceptional point. Recently, higher-order exceptional points have demonstrated the possibility of achieving the nth root dependence of the eigenfrequency splitting on perturbations. However, the exceptional sensitivity to external parameters is, at the same time, the major drawback of non-Hermitian configurations, leading to the high influence of noise. In this review, the basic principles of PT-symmetric and anti-PT-symmetric Hamiltonians will be shown, both in photonics and in electronics. The influence of noise on non-Hermitian configurations will be investigated and the newest solutions to overcome these problems will be illustrated. Scattering loss in high-index-contrast optical waveguides has been modeled by a rigorous 3D numerical algorithm based on volume current method. The electromagnetic field generated by the wire current distribution simulating sidewalls roughness has been calculated by 3D finite element method. The developed modeling technique does not introduce any approximation in radiated power estimation. Numerical results obtained by our model have been compared with some experimental results reported in literature for four typical sub-micrometer high-index-contrast waveguides realized by different technologies and a very good agreement (relative error less than 3%) has been demonstrated. Closed-form expressions for scattering loss in low-index-contrast waveguides have been also derived and discussed. Developed modeling technique has been compared with other three-dimensional algorithms for scattering loss estimation and its advantages in terms of accuracy, computation time and generality have been pointed out. The diffraction of vortex Gaussian laser beams by elementary objects of micro-optics (surface micro-defects) to recognize the type of polarization (linear, circular, radial, azimuthal) of the input radiation was investigated in this paper. We considered two main types of defects (protrusion and depression in the form of a circle and a square) with different sizes (the radius and height were varied). Light propagation (3D) through the proposed micro-defects was modeled using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The possibility of recognizing (including size change) of surface micro-defects (protrusions and depressions) and all the above types of polarization are shown. Thus, micro-defects act as sensors for the polarization state of the illuminating beam. The focusing properties of micro-defects are compared with diffractive axicons with different numerical apertures (NAs). The possibility of sub-wavelength focusing with element height change is demonstrated. In particular, it is numerically shown that a silicon cylinder (protrusion) forms a light spot with a minimum size of the all intensity FWHM of 0.28λ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose and analyze three Si-based room-temperature strip-guided "manufacturable" integrated quantum photonic chem/bio sensor chips operating at wavelengths of 1550 nm, 1330 nm, and 640 nm, respectively. We propose design rules that will achieve super-sensitivity (above the classical limit) by means of mixing between states of coherent light and single-mode squeezed-light. The silicon-on-insulator (SOI), silicon-on-sapphire (SOS), and silicon nitride-on-SiO2-on Si (SiN) platforms have been investigated. Each chip is comprised of photonic building blocks: a race-track resonator, a pump filter, an integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometric chem/bio sensor, and a photonic circuit to perform parity measurements, where our homodyne measurement circuit avoids the use of single-photon-counting detectors and utilizes instead conventional photodetectors. In this paper the numerical modeling of periodic structures for implementation of a novel type of photonic sensors by using the 3D finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is presented. The sensing is based on the optical phenomena occurring in the segmented grating which is placed on the thin silica buffer over the silicon wire waveguide in the silicon‐on‐insulator (SOI) structure. This design provides the effective resonance interaction of the guided wave with the virtual leaky wave supported by the segmented grating evanescently coupled with the silicon wire. The dropping wavelength of this interaction is strongly dependent on the grating environment and it provides a strong refractometricsensitivity (Sn > 420 nm RIU−1) and surface sensitivity Sh > 0.17, evaluated in the case of water. The modeling proves that the effect of abnormal blocking due to virtual leaky wave could be the base for the design of optical sensors with extremely high sensitivity. 3D FDTD modeling is used to investigate the sensing properties in water of segmented gratings of SU‐8 polymer having period 1.4 µm and evanescently coupled with an underlying silicon wire. Sensor shows homogeneous sensitivity Sn = ∂λ/∂n > −420 nm‐1 and surface sensitivity Sh = ∂λ/∂h > 0.17. Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors are not only a very well-established research field, but they are also acquiring a bigger market share due to their sensitivity and low costs. In this paper we review FBG strain sensors with high focus on the underlying physical principles, the interrogation, and the read-out techniques. Particular emphasis is given to recent advances in highly-performing, single head FBG, a category FBG strain sensors belong to. Different sensing schemes are described, including FBG strain sensors based on mode splitting. Their operation principle and performance are reported and compared with the conventional architectures. In this paper we present a physical discussion of the indirect two-photon absorption (TPA) occuring in silicon carbide with either cubic or wurtzite structure. Phonon-electron interaction is analyzed by finding the phonon features involved in the process as depending upon the crystal symmetry. Consistent physical assumptions about the phonon-electron scattering mechanisms are proposed in order to give a mathematical formulation to predict the wavelength dispersion of TPA and the Kerr nonlinear refractive index n2. The TPA spectrum is investigated including the effects of band nonparabolicity and the influence of the continuum exciton. Moreover, a parametric analysis is presented in order to fit the experimental measurements. Finally, we have estimated the n2 in a large wavelength range spanning the visible to the mid-IR region. A fiberoptic architecture based on a ring resonator (RR) including a typical long period grating (LPG) was investigated. The interactions between the fundamental core mode (LP01 or HE11) coupled to the RR and the cladding mode (LP08), excited into the cavity by means of the LPG, allow a peculiar spectral response characterized by two splitting resonances to be achieved. The new LPGRR architecture is investigated theoretically and a mathematical modelling based on the transfer matrix method (TMM) is proposed. The theoretical results are compared with the experiments measured by an open-loop LPG, while the performance of the relative LPGRR was estimated by a theoretical parametric analysis. Finally, an overview of the possible LPGRR sensing applications is provided by investigating the features of a strain sensor operating in different environmental conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An accurate design of an innovative fiber optic temperature sensor is developed. The sensor is based on a cascade of three microstructured optical fibers (MOFs). In the first one a suitable cascade of long period gratings is designed into the core. A single mode intermediate and a rare-earth activated Fabry-Perot optical cavity are the other two sensor MOF sections. An exhaustive theoretic feasibility investigation is performed employing computer code. The complete set-up for temperature monitoring can be obtained by utilizing only a low cost pump diode laser at 980 nm wavelength and a commercial optical power detector. The simulated sensitivity S = 315.1 μW/°C and the operation range ΔT = 100 °C is good enough for actual applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of high energy radiations on the performance of silicon-on-insulator photonic devices, such as straight waveguides, ring resonators and Raman lasers based on resonant microcavities, has been investigated theoretically in the near infrared. The modeling is based on a generalized full-vectorial wave equation system which also includes deep defect rate equations. Simulation results are compared with the state-of-the-art, demonstrating a very good agreement between theoretical predictions and experiments reported in literature in the case of both ionizing and nonionizing events. Moreover, a parametric analysis is presented in order to investigate the degradation mechanisms of photonic device performance that occur under the influence of radiation bombardment. In this paper, we propose a generalized procedure for the design of integrated Vernier devices for high performance chemical and biochemical sensing. In particular, we demonstrate the accurate control of the most critical design and fabrication parameters of silicon-on-insulator cascade-coupled racetrack resonators operating in the second regime of the Vernier effect, around 1.55 µm. The experimental implementation of our design strategies has allowed a rigorous and reliable investigation of the influence of racetrack resonator and directional coupler dimensions as well as of waveguide process variability on the operation of Vernier devices. Figures of merit of our Vernier architectures have been measured experimentally, evidencing a high reproducibility and a very good agreement with the theoretical predictions, as also confirmed by relative errors even lower than 1%. Finally, a Vernier gain as high as 30.3, average insertion loss of 2.1 dB and extinction ratio up to 30 dB have been achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advances in silicon photonics have resulted in rapidly increasing complexity in integrated circuits. New methods that allow the direct characterization of individual optical components in situ, without the need for additional fabrication steps or test structures, are desirable. Here, we present a device-level method for the characterization of photonic chips based on a highly localized modulation in the device using pulsed laser excitation. Optical pumping perturbs the refractive index of silicon, providing a spatially and temporally localized modulation in the transmitted light, enabling time- and frequency-resolved imaging. We demonstrate the versatility of this all-optical modulation technique in imaging and in the quantitative characterization of a range of properties of silicon photonic devices, from group indices in waveguides, to quality factors of a ring resonator, and to the mode structure of a multimode interference device. In this paper, a spectroscopic sensor formed by a silicon-on-insulator waveguiding Bragg grating ring resonator working in linear and non-linear regime is proposed. In linear regime, the device shows a spectral response characterized by a photonic band gap (PBG). Very close to the band gap edges, the resonant structure exhibits split modes having a splitting magnitude equal to the PBG spectral extension, whose characteristics can be exploited to obtain a RI optical sensor almost insensitive to the fabrication tolerances and environmental perturbations. When the device operates in nonlinear regime, exactly in the spectral region showing the split resonant modes, the RI sensing performance is strongly improved with respect to the linear regime. This improvement, demonstrated by taking into account all the non-linear effects excited in the integrated silicon structure (i.e., Two Photon Absorption (TPA), TPA-induced Free Carrier Absorption, plasma dispersion, Self-Phase-Modulation and Cross-Phase-Modulation effects as induced by Kerr nonlinearity) as well as the deleterious thermal and stress effects, allows enhancing the performance of the RI split mode resonant sensors, while achieving good immunity to the fabrication tolerances and environmental perturbations. Recently, the Vernier effect has been proved to be very efficient for significantly improving the sensitivity and the limit of detection (LOD) of chemical, biochemical and gas photonic sensors. In this paper a review of compact and efficient photonic sensors based on the Vernier effect is presented. The most relevant results of several theoretical and experimental works are reported, and the theoretical model of the typical Vernier effect-based sensor is discussed as well. In particular, sensitivity up to 460 µm/RIU has been experimentally reported, while ultra-high sensitivity of 2,500 µm/RIU and ultra-low LOD of 8.79 X 10-8 RIU have been theoretically demonstrated, employing a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) as sensing device instead of an add drop ring resonator. Slot waveguides are very promising for optical sensing applications because of their peculiar spatial mode profile. In this paper we have carried out a detailed analysis of mode confinement properties in slot waveguides realized in very low refractive index materials. We show that the sensitivity of a slot waveguide is not directly related to the refractive index contrast of high and low materials forming the waveguide. Thus, a careful design of the structures allows the realization of high sensitivity devices even in very low refractive index materials (e.g., polymers) to be achieved. Advantages of low index dielectrics in terms of cost, functionalization and ease of fabrication are discussed while keeping both CMOS compatibility and integrable design schemes. Finally, applications of low index slot waveguides as substitute of bulky fiber capillary sensors or in ring resonator architectures are addressed. In this paper, a method based on the inherent event-based sampling capability of laser optical feedback interferometry (OFI) is proposed to assess the optical feedback factor C when the laser operates in the moderate and strong feedback regimes. Most of the phase unwrapping open-loop OFI algorithms rely on the estimation of C to retrieve the displacement with nanometric precision. Here, the proposed method operates in open-loop configuration and relies only on OFI's fringe detection, thereby improving its robustness and ease of use. The proposed method is able to estimate C with a precision of <5%. The obtained performances are compared to three different approaches previously published and the impacts of phase noise and sampling frequency are reported. We also show that this method can assess C on the fly even when C is varying due to speckle. To the best of the authors' knowledge, these are the first reported results of time-varying C estimation. In addition, through C estimation over time, it could pave the way not only to higher performance phase unwrapping algorithms but also to a better control of the optical feedback level via the use of an adaptive lens and thus to better displacement retrieval performances. A dual liquid-crystal variable retarder Mueller polarimetry system incorporating a gold-based surface plasmon resonance prism coupler was proposed for extracting the optical properties of serum albumin protein media in the reflectance configuration. The feasibility of the proposed system was demonstrated by measuring the circular dichroism and circular birefringence properties of glucose tissue phantom solutions with different albumin concentrations. The results showed that the circular dichroism increased with albumin concentration, while the optical rotation angle increased with glucose concentration. Both properties reduced over time as a result of the protein glycation effect, which led to a gradual reduction in the glucose content of the sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We demonstrated a 1.1-µm band extended wideband wavelength-swept laser (WSL) that combined two semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) based on a polygonal scanning wavelength filter. The center wavelengths of the two SOAs were 1020 nm and 1140 nm, respectively. Two SOAs were connected in parallel in the form of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. At a scanning speed of 1.8 kHz, the 10-dB bandwidth of the spectral output and the average power were approximately 228 nm and 16.88 mW, respectively. Owing to the nonlinear effect of the SOA, a decrease was observed in the bandwidth according to the scanning speed. Moreover, the intensity of the WSL decreased because the oscillation time was smaller than the buildup time. In addition, a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) cell was fabricated as an application of WSL, and the dynamic change of the first-order reflection of the CLC cell in the 1-µm band was observed using the WSL. The pitch jumps of the reflection band occurred according to the electric field applied to the CLC cell, and instantaneous changes were observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Damage classification is an important topic in the development of structural health monitoring systems. When applied to wind-turbine foundations, it provides information about the state of the structure, helps in maintenance, and prevents catastrophic failures. A data-driven pattern-recognition methodology for structural damage classification was developed in this study. The proposed methodology involves several stages: (1) data acquisition, (2) data arrangement, (3) data normalization through the mean-centered unitary group-scaling method, (4) linear feature extraction, (5) classification using the extreme gradient boosting machine learning classifier, and (6) validation applying a 5-fold cross-validation technique. The linear feature extraction capabilities of principal component analysis are employed; the original data of 58,008 features is reduced to only 21 features. The methodology is validated with an experimental test performed in a small-scale wind-turbine foundation structure that simulates the perturbation effects caused by wind and marine waves by applying an unknown white noise signal excitation to the structure. A vibration-response methodology is selected for collecting accelerometer data from both the healthy structure and the structure subjected to four different damage scenarios. The datasets are satisfactorily classified, with performance measures over 99.9 % after using the proposed damage classification methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We theoretically explore the potential of Si3N4 on SiO2 waveguide platform toward a wideband spectroscopic detection around the optical wavelength of 2 μm. The design of Si3N4 on SiO2 waveguide architectures consisting of a Si3N4 slot waveguide for a wideband on-chip spectroscopic sensing around 2 μm, and a Si3N4 multi-mode interferometer (MMI)-based coupler for light coupling from classical strip waveguide into the identified Si3N4 slot waveguides over a wide spectral range are investigated. We found that a Si3N4 on SiO2 slot waveguide structure can be designed for using as optical interaction part over a spectral range of interest, and the MMI structure can be used to enable broadband optical coupling from a strip to the slot waveguide for wideband multi-gas on-chip spectroscopic sensing. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are among the most common and powerful label-free refractive index-based biosensing techniques available nowadays. Focusing on LSPR sensors, their performance is highly dependent on the size, shape, and nature of the nanomaterial employed. Indeed, the tailoring of those parameters allows the development of LSPR sensors with a tunable wavelength range between the ultra-violet (UV) and near infra-red (NIR). Furthermore, dealing with LSPR along optical fiber technology, with their low attenuation coefficients at NIR, allow for the possibility to create ultra-sensitive and long-range sensing networks to be deployed in a variety of both biological and chemical sensors. This work provides a detailed review of the key science underpinning such systems as well as recent progress in the development of several LSPR-based biosensors in the NIR wavelengths, including an overview of the LSPR phenomena along recent developments in the field of nanomaterials and nanostructure development towards NIR sensing. We demonstrate a novel chalcogenide glass (ChG)-capped optical fiber temperature sensor capable of operating within harsh environment. The sensor architecture utilizes the heat-induced phase change (amorphous-to-crystalline) property of ChGs, which rapidly (80–100 ns) changes the optical properties of the material. The sensor response to temperature variation around the phase change of the ChG cap at the tip of the fiber provides abrupt changes in the reflected power intensity. This temperature is indicative of the temperature at the sensing node. We present the sensing performance of six different compositions of ChGs and a method to interpret the temperature profile between 440 °C and 600 °C in real-time using an array structure. The unique radiation-hardness property of ChGs makes the devices compatible with high-temperature and high-radiation environments, such as monitoring the cladding temperature of Light Water (LWR) or Sodium-cooled Fast (SFR) reactors. The metalloporphyrin ligand bearing incorporated anion-exchanger fragment, 5-[4-(3-trimethylammonium)propyloxyphenyl]-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrinate of Co(II) chloride, CoTPP-N, has been tested as anion-selective ionophore in PVC-based solvent polymeric membrane sensors. A plausible sensor working mechanism includes the axial coordination of the target anion on ionophore metal center followed by the formed complex aggregation with the second ionophore molecule through positively charged anion-exchanger fragment. The UV-visible spectroscopic studies in solution have revealed that the analyte concentration increase induces the J-type porphyrin aggregation. Polymeric membranes doped with CoTPP-N showed close to the theoretical Nernstian response toward nitrite ion, preferably coordinated by the ionophore, and were dependent on the presence of additional membrane-active components (lipophilic ionic sites and ionophore) in the membrane phase. The resulting selectivity was a subject of specific interaction and/or steric factors. Moreover, it was demonstrated theoretically and confirmed experimentally that the selection of a proper ratio of ionophore and anionic additive can optimize the sensor selectivity and lifetime. Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) rods are widely used as corrosion-resistant reinforcing in civil structures. However, developing a method to determine the loads on in-service FRP rods remains a challenge. In this study, the entropy of acoustic emission (AE) emanating from FRP rods is used to estimate the applied loads. As loads increased, the fraction of AE hits with higher entropy also increased. High entropy AE hits are defined using the one-sided Chebyshev's inequality with parameter k = 2 where the histogram of AE entropy up to 10–15% of ultimate load was used as a baseline. According to the one-sided Chebyshev's inequality, when more than 20% (k = 2) of AE hits that fall further than two standard deviations away from the mean are classified as high entropy events, a new distribution of high entropy AE hits is assumed to exist. We have found that the fraction of high AE hits. In glass FRP and carbon FRP rods, a high entropy AE hit fraction of 20% was exceeded at approximately 40% and 50% of the ultimate load, respectively. Multilayers consisting of graphene oxide (GO) and α-Fe2O3 thin layers were deposited on the ceramic substrates by the spray LbL (layer by layer) coating technique. Graphene oxide was prepared from graphite using the modified Hummers method. Obtained GO flakes reached up to 6 nanometers in thickness and 10 micrometers in lateral size. Iron oxide Fe2O3 was obtained by the wet chemical method from FeCl3 and NH4OH solution. Manufactured samples were deposited as 3 LbL (GO and Fe2O3 layers deposited sequentially) and 6 LbL structures with GO as a bottom layer. Electrical measurements show the decrease of multilayer resistance after the introduction of the oxidizing NO2 gas to the ambient air atmosphere. The concentration of NO2 was changed from 1 ppm to 20 ppm. The samples changed their resistance even at temperatures close to room temperature, however, the sensitivity increased with temperature. Fe2O3 is known as an n-type semiconductor, but the rGO/Fe2O3 hybrid structure behaved similarly to rGO, which is p-type. Both chemisorbed O2 and NO2 act as electron traps decreasing the concentration of electrons and increasing the effective multilayer conductivity. A room-temperature strip-guided "manufacturable" Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI)/GeSn integrated-photonics quantum-gyroscope chip operating at 1550 nm is proposed and analysed. We demonstrate how the entangled photons generated in Si Spontaneous Four Wave Mixing (SFWM) can be used to improve the resolution of a Sagnac interferometric gyroscope. We propose different integrated architectures based on degenerate and non-degenerate SFWM. The chip comprises several beam splitters, two SFWM entangled photon sources, a pump filter, integrated Mach–Zehnder interferometric gyro, and an array of waveguide coupled GeSn/Ge/Si single-photon avalanche detectors. The laser pumped SWFM sources generate the signal-idler pairs, which, in turn, are used to measure the two-photon, four-photon, and higher order coincidences, resulting in an increasing of the gyro resolution by a factor of two and four, with respect to the classical approach. A dual-gas sensor based on the combination of a quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor and an electronic hygrometer was realized for the simultaneous detection of methane (CH4) and water vapor (H2O) in air. The QEPAS sensor employed an interband cascade laser operating at 3.34 μm capable of targeting a CH4 absorption line at 2988.8 cm−1 and a water line at 2988.6 cm−1. Water vapor was measured with both the electronic hygrometer and the QEPAS sensor for comparison. The measurement accuracy provided by the hygrometer enabled the adjustment of methane QEPAS signal with respect to the water vapor concentration to retrieve the actual CH4 concentration. The sensor was tested by performing prolonged measurements of CH4 and H2O over 60 h to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach for environmental monitoring applications. In this paper we report methane gas photonic sensors exploiting the principle of absorption-induced redirection of light propagation in coupled resonant cavities. In particular, an example of implemented architecture consists of a Fabry–Pérot (FP) resonator coupled to a fibre ring resonator, operating in the near IR. By changing the concentration of the methane gas in the FP region, the absorption coefficient of the FP changes. In turn, the variation of the methane gas concentration allows the redirection of the light propagation in the fibre ring resonator. Then, the methane gas concentration can be evaluated by analysing the ratio between the powers of two resonant modes, counter-propagating in the fibre ring resonator. In this way, a self-referenced read-out scheme, immune to the power fluctuations of the source, has been conceived. Moreover, a sensitivity of 0.37 ± 0.04 [dB/%], defined as the ratio between resonant modes at different outputs, in a range of methane concentration included between the 0% and 5%, has been achieved. These results allow a detection limit below the lower explosive limit (LEL) to be reached with a cost-effective sensor system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A theoretical model describing the acoustic coupling between two resonator tubes in spectrophones exploiting custom-made quartz tuning forks (QTFs) is proposed. The model is based on an open-end correction to predict the optimal tube length. A calculation of the sound field distribution from one tube exit allowed for the estimation of the optimal radius as a function of the QTF prong spacing and the sound wavelength. The theoretical predictions have been confirmed using experimental studies employing a custom QTF with a fundamental flexural mode resonance frequency of 15.8 kHz and a quality factor of 15,000 at atmospheric pressure. The spacing between the two prongs was 1.5 mm. Spectrophones mounting this QTF were implemented for the quartz-enhanced photoacoustic detection of water vapor in air in the mid-infrared spectral range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study of the dependence of main loss mechanisms on the geometry of piezoelectric quartz tuning forks (QTFs) is reported. The influence of these loss mechanisms on the quality factor Q occurring while the QTF vibrates at the in‐plane flexural fundamental and first overtone resonance modes is investigated. From this study, two QTFs efficiently operating both at the fundamental and first overtone mode are designed and realized. Data analysis demonstrates that air viscous damping is the dominant energy dissipation mechanism for both flexural modes. However, at the first overtone mode the air damping is reduced and higher quality factors can be obtained when operating at the first overtone mode with respect to the fundamental one. In this paper, a detailed theoretical and experimental analysis of the influence of quartz tuning forks geometries on the quality factor of the flexural fundamental and first overtone resonance modes is reported. Air damping is the dominant loss mechanism at atmospheric pressure. At 25 torr, the influence of support losses starts to contribute to the overall quality factor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) process in AlGaN integrated photonic waveguides. The wide bandgap of this III-Nitride material platform allows operating at visible wavelengths enabling large Stokes shifts. For this study, we employ a multiphysics approach that includes electric-photoelastic, magnetic-photoelastic, material interface displacement effects, and for optimal waveguide dimensions to find the Brillouin-active acoustic modes involved in the SBS process. The SBS power gain and the Stokes frequency shift are investigated for both backward and forward scattering processes, and it is shown that stokes shift larger than 50 GHz with high gain are achievable. Moreover, a parametric analysis is presented in order to demonstrate the possibility of realizing Brillouin lasers operating at blue wavelengths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the physical nature and the numerical modeling of a novel approach of periodic structures for applications as photonic sensors. The sensing is based on the high sensitivity to the cover index change of the notch wavelength. This sensitivity is due to the effect of abnormal blocking of the guided wave propagating along the silicon wire with periodic strips overhead it through the silica buffer. The structure sensing is numerically modeled by 2D and 3D finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, taking into account the waveguide dispersion. The modeling of the long structures (more than 1000 strips) is accomplished by the 2D method of lines (MoL) with a maximal implementation of the analytical feature of the method.
