Healthcare is expected to increasingly shift care out of inpatient settings thanks to wearable monitoring systems. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an optical technique already integrated into wrist-worn commercial products which presents significant advantages in terms of cost and dimensions. PPG-based devices, despite their ability to detect multiple cardiovascular parameters, are affected by several influencing conditions that depend both on technological or environmental variables, and on intra- and inter-subject variability that influences the whole measurement chain and reliability, hindering an objective characterization of PPG devices. Plus, the lack of standardization for data collection and processing leads to the lack of generalizability and reproducibility of results, preventing the full exploitation of the potential prognostic capacity of this technology. Thus, this review aims not only to summarize the main influencing parameters of PPG technology, which should be addressed when testing the sensor, but also to suggest tentative guidelines for a possible future standardization initiative.

Diversi studi compiuti negli ultimi anni hanno messo in luce una lunga quanto sottovalutata tradizione nell’uso del legno in generale e di quello di castagno in particolare, in Sicilia e sue isole satelliti (Sala et al., 2020). Altre indagini hanno inoltre confermato le ottime qualità tecnologiche del legno di castagno siciliano (Cruciata et al., 2018; La Mantia et al., 2006a; Maggiore et al., 2006). Meno noto ma altrettanto interessante è l’uso prolungato delle castagne nell’alimentazione; i frutti venivano infatti consumati prevalentemente, ma non esclusivamente, nelle zone montane dell’isola. Insufficientemente esplorate appaiono tuttora anche la ricchezza genetica, così come il ruolo del castagno nella biodiversità degli ecosistemi e paesaggi agroforestali dell’isola. Il contesto commerciale nazionale ed internazionale, i processi di abbandono delle aree montane e gli attacchi dei patogeni che hanno colpito il castagno hanno portato nel corso degli ultimi decenni ad una drastica riduzione delle superfici occupate dai castagneti su gran parte del territorio siciliano (La Mantia et al., 1999). Senza adeguate misure di valorizzazione, sperimentazione e interventi economici mirati l’insieme di queste congiunture sfavorevoli, spesso sinergiche, rischiano di provocare la scomparsa definitiva di componenti preziose di questo patrimonio culturale, colturale e genetico (Cutino et al., 2006 a e b; La Mantia et al., 2006 b). In questo contesto, vengono presentate alcune proposte d’intervento che traggono spunto da un quadro sintetico delle conoscenze disponibili sulla storia naturale del castagno in Sicilia.

This paper presents a multidisciplinary summary of the most recent discoveries and hypotheses concerning factors driving the human subsistence economy and landscape shaping in Sicily during the Holocene. A number of scientific papers have recently pointed out the key role played by paleogeography, resource (water, food) availability and natural disturbances (volcanic eruptions, tsunamis) in local human activities. Modern anthropology and archaeology increasingly use biological remains (e.g. soils, bones, wood, plant macroremains, pollen) to better understand how human communities managed to survive and spread. Likewise, refined reconstructions of past human demographic fluxes and socio-economic structures may enable a better understanding of landscape dynamics. Specifically, this historical perspective on the management of natural resources allows the finding of past episodes of unsustainable land use (e.g. forest destruction, overgrazing), thus providing a useful basis for future nature protection and maintaining sustainable ecosystem services.

Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) is an emerging alternative treatment for those patients not qualified for surgery. However, TMVR can determine an obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract (namely, neo-LVOT) induced by the transcatheter heart valve (THV) displacing the native mitral valve leaflet towards the myocardial wall. This condition can lead to haemodynamic impairment and ultimately patient death. We sought to predict the neo-LVOT obstruction by first developing patient-specific simulations of the THV deployment and then comparing predictions with post-TMVR diagnostic images and 3D printed human models. Using pre-TMVR computed-tomography (CT) imaging, patient-specific anatomies of two patients were reconstructed and then meshed with ABAQUS/Explicit solver. The latter was used to simulate the crimping and deployment of SAPIEN 3 THV (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA) and then simulate the cardiac beating. The neo-LVOT cross sectional area was then computed. For both patients, rigid heart models were printed with SLS rapid prototyping technology while the SAPIEN 3 device was printed with flexible resin to manually positioning the device in the human host. Numerical predictions and 3D printed model measurements of neo-LVOT area agreed well with those obtained by post-TMVR CT imaging. Both computational modelling and 3D printing revealed a comprehensive assessment of the TMVR feasibility, which is not readily conferred by conventional CT imaging. Particularly, the realistic printed models could become an efficient and indispensable tool to help the heart team visualizing the LVOT obstruction to anatomical scale, in a life-size replica of patient-specific cardiac anatomy.

– If History is a terrain of challenge and confrontation, it can just as powerfully become a terrain of encounter, insofar as dialogical learning opportunities are set up. We present here the results of an exploratory research, conducted during the school year 2020-21, involving History teachers selected as reflective teachers. At the core of our investigation, the analysis of the topics considered the hottest during History class and the investigation of the teaching and relational strategies that can foster a participatory approach of students. The analysis of the results was guided by Hartmut Rosa's (2019) model of resonance, where the teacher's involvement, the subject matter, and the students' reactions and participation constitute the essential elements of an effective teaching experience. The results reveal several aspects of the teaching profession that can foster classroom dialogue around History. Riassunto – Se la Storia è terreno di sfida e di scontro, può con egual potenza diventare terreno di incontro, nella misura in cui si allestiscano occasioni di apprendimento di tipo dialogico. Presentiamo in questa sede i risultati emersi da una ricerca esplorativa, condotta durante l’a.s. 2020-21, che ha coinvolto insegnanti di Storia selezionati in quanto docenti riflessivi. Al centro della nostra indagine, l’analisi dei temi ritenuti più “caldi” durante l’ora di Storia e l’approfondimento delle strategie didattiche e relazionali che possono favorire un approccio partecipato degli studenti. L’analisi dei risultati è stata guidata dal modello della risonanza di Hartmut Rosa (2019), dove coinvolgimento del docente, disciplina trattata, reazioni e partecipazione degli studenti, costituiscono gli elementi essenziali di un’esperienza didattica efficace. The results of a multidisciplinary survey on the use of wood in Sicily are presented here. This research, based on a thorough review of the information available from numerous sources, mostly related to Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities, sheds light on the lasting, widespread and diversified use of many tens of woody species - native and cultivated - growing on the island. This work represents an initial contribution to a topic largely overlooked the national and regional literature concerning forest sciences and wood technology. Contrariwise, the very precise information available on the specific uses of wood from certain Sicilian woody species clearly testifies to the profound knowledge and high level of skills acquired not only by local craftsmen’s associations (carpenters, cabinet-makers, shipwrights, etc.) but also by local farmers and other woodworking sectors. Moreover, the use of several woody plants points to the probable impact that past use of forest resources had on the distribution of a number of tree species, many of which now rarely occur on a regional level, namely large-leaved lime trees (Tilia platyphyllos), common ashes (Fraxinus excelsior), yews (Taxus baccata) and black alders (Alnus glutinosa).

Presentazione dei risultati dell'attività di Species translocation relativi alla specie relitta Zelkova sicula

Caprine overbrowsing is a main threat to trees of pastoral mountain woodlands in the Mediterranean region of Europe. In this study, we assess the impact of browsing exclusion on the growth and regeneration of the endangered Zelkova abelicea, a Paleogene relict tree endemic to Crete (Greece). Shoot elongation, height growth and natural regeneration were monitored during two to five years in 31 fenced plots across the distribution range of the species. We found that in the absence of browsing pressure, Z. abelicea produces shoots on average two times longer than when browsed, therefore clearly demonstrating the negative impact of current browsing pressure on the growth performance of the species. Shoot elongation and height growth were maximal in most plots during the first two years following fencing, after which growth rates decreased. The proportion of trees that reached a height considered out of reach of caprine browsing had more than doubled already after four years, although this was dependent on initial tree height. Shoot elongation and height growth were positively correlated with tree height, and smaller trees took more time to reach a specific height. Seedlings were only found in three fenced plots as well as in two control browsed areas during a single year and only in western Crete. This underlines the possible strong and concerning impact of climatic factors on seed formation as well as on seedling growth and survival, although site specificities such as stand structure and micro-topography should also be considered. Our findings have important implications for conservation actions, as they can help choose which stands and which individuals to fence in priority for efficient long-term conservation. © 2021 The Authors

In this study, the Carelight multi-wavelength opto-electronic patch sensor (OEPS) was adopted to assess the effectiveness of a new approach for estimating the systolic blood pressure (SBP) through the changes in the morphology of the OEPS signal. Specifically, the SBP was estimated by changing the pressure exerted on an inflatable cuff placed around the left upper arm. Pressure acquisitions were performed both with gold standard (i.e. electronic sphygmomanometer), and Carelight sensor (experimental procedure), on subjects from a multiethnic cohort (aged 28 ± 7). The OEPS sensor was applied together with a manual inflatable cuff, going slightly above the level of the SBP with increases of +10mmHg and subsequently deflated by 10mmHg until reaching full deflation. The OEPS signals were captured using four wavelength illumination sources (i.e., green 525 nm, orange 595 nm, red 650 nm and IR 870 nm) on three different measuring sites, namely forefinger, radial artery and wrist. The implemented algorithm provides information on the instant when the SBP was reached and the signal is lost since the vessel is completely blocked. Similarly, it detected the signal resumption when the external pressure dropped below the SBP. The findings demonstrated a good correlation between the variation of the pressure and the corresponding OEPS signal with the most accurate result achieved in the fingertip among all wavelengths, with a temporal identification error of 8.07 %. Further studies will improve the clinical relevance on a cohort of patients diagnosed with hyper- or hypotension, in order to develop a wearable blood-pressure device.

Fire is one of the major disturbance factors in Mediterranean-type ecosystems, where since long time man has deeply modified the natural fire regime. To know how woody species recover after fire is of prominent importance for understanding vegetation dynamics, as well as for the management of Mediterranean plantations, especially where broadleaved and coniferous trees coexist. Our research was carried out at Monte Petroso (Sicily), within an historical afforestation intervention in the Mediterranean basin. We assessed the post-fire response of mixed oaks and oak-pine afforestations within six experimental plots (two plots per homogeneous sector) differing in dominant tree species (Quercus ilex or Pinus pinea), time since last wildfire (1954 or 1982), and post-fire management (understory cleaning and removal of dead biomass or no management). Dendrometric surveys and phytosociological relevés were carried out to characterize the tree layers, the regeneration by woody species plus Ampelodesmos mauritanicus, as well as plant species richness. Our field surveys have confirmed a notably high resilience to fire by Mediterranean woody species, regardless of post-fire management practices. The dominant tree species played a significant role as Quercus ilex seems to foster stand development and the regeneration dynamics in the understory, especially that of Quercus pubescens. By contrast, Pinus pinea seems to slow down the regeneration by woody species, especially at higher stand density. Post-fire management practices seemed to favor mantle shrubs (Prunetalia spinosae) and grassland species (Hyparrhenietalia hirtae), while negatively affecting shrub species (Cisto-Ericetalia multiflorae). In presence of sufficient propagules of native woody species, the option of no management after fire has to be considered. The results of our research may be useful to improve the management of fire-prone Mediterranean plantations, taking into account the differences in plant strategies to cope with fire, as well as the dominant canopy.

Recent geological studies demonstrated that most of Sicily was still under water during lower Pliocene, with the exception of the NE and the SE corners of the island (Peloritani Mts and Hyblaean Plateau, respectively). This geological evidence, so far not considered sufficiently by the scholars of the Sicilian flora, poses many still open questions on how and where many ancient lineages and Palaeogene relicts, currently found on the island, managed to survive. Purpose of this paper is to review the potential significance of isolation and ecological differentiation for the local floristic diversity and the evolution of narrow endemism in the Sicilian flora. In particular, the following drivers of Sicilian floristic patterns are considered: geographical segregation and age of the Sicilian terrains; climate variability and heterogeneity; geological patchiness; human influence on habitat fragmentation.

Plumbago auriculata Lam. (Plumbaginaceae) in western Sicily: new data on its spread as casual alien. In questa nota si fornisce un quadro aggiornato sui casi di naturalizzazione di Plumbago auriculata Lam. (Plumbaginaceae) nella Sicilia occidentale e sul suo status invasivo a livello nazionale ed internazionale. Questa xenofita viene segnalata per la prima volta in diverse aree delle province di Agrigento, Palermo e Trapani, dopo essere stata segnalata per la prima volta presso l'isola di Linosa, nell'arcipelago delle Pelagie.

During the last century, massive reforestation projects along the dunes of the southern Sicily have been carried out. Such interventions, far from being in line with the current trends of close-to-nature silviculture, are, however, particularly interesting to assess the vegetation dynamics in afforestation areas. Furthermore, these kind of interventions may determine two opposite effects, that is renaturalization by native woody species or invasion by alien species. Acacia spp. are among the most widespread and prominent invaders within Mediterranean-climate areas, where they have already shown the capability to deeply change the characters and the functioning of native ecosystems. For instance, Acacia longifolia (Andrews) Willd. may successfully invade the understory of pine forests, causing the alteration of the water balance and carbon storage of the whole forest ecosystem. In Sicily, especially in the last decades, Acacia saligna started to abundantly regenerate in many natural and semi-natural areas, with a stark preference for dune and coastal afforested sites. The nature reserve “Foce del Fiume Platani” represents an excellent case study in this respect.

Vengono presentati i risultati preliminari di una indagine multidisciplinare condotta in una zona umida nel territorio di Calatafimi Segesta in provincia di Trapani. L'area è di grande interesse per la presenza di rare specie animali e vegetali, di habitat minacciati tutelati da normative nazionali ed internazionali, ma anche perché è una delle ultime zone umide superstiti dell'entroterra trapanese. L'area ha subito in tempi recenti un pesante disturbo antropico che rischia di portare alla distruzione questo ambiente e il suo biota di pregio. Con questo contributo gli autori intendono supportare la richiesta di adeguata e urgente tutela del sito. Anguillara Ponds (Calatafimi Segesta, Trapani): preliminary data on the biodiversity in support of the protection of the biotope. The preliminary results of a multidisciplinary survey concerning a wetland complex in the territory of Calatafimi Segesta (Trapani) are presented here. The area is of great interest not only because of the presence of several rare animal and plant taxa and of threatened habitats protected by national and international laws, but also because it hosts one of the last surviving inland wetlands in the whole province. In the last years, the area was subjected to serious anthropogenic disturbance, so that this ecosystem and its valuable biota risk to be definitely destroyed. With this contribution, the authors wish support the request to appropriately and urgently protect the site.

This paper provides an overview of the key research findings gathered and pilot conservation activities initiated over the past five years, with a focus on the two Mediterranean species. As with other initiatives in the framework of the Global Trees Campaign (globaltrees.org) dedicated to saving the world's most threatened woody plants, it highlights the collaborative, multidisciplinary nature of the conservation efforts needed, to secure the values and benefits provided by rare, relict species for future generations

Per la peculiarità storica, geografica ed ambientale l’Isola di Lampedusa, e vista l’estrema frammentarietà delle formazioni preforestali, l’esiguità dei popolamenti (e degli individui) delle specie legnose assumono un valore scientifico e conservazionistico particolarmente elevato. Per queste ragioni è stato fatto un censimento eseguito con strumentazione GPS. Sull’isola crescono diverse specie di rilevante interesse conservazionistico, numerose sono infatti le specie endemiche, esclusive, rare e/o a rischio di estinzione perché legate a habitat molto vulnerabili e localizzati. A questa ragione d’interesse generale per questi taxa si somma il fatto che buona parte delle specie arboree tipiche della vegetazione primaria dell’isola, il più delle volte sopravvivono localmente con popolamenti costituiti da pochissimi (e talora singoli!) individui. Juniperus turbinata e Olea europaea var. sylvestris sono le due specie forestali di gran lunga più comuni tra quelle indagate . Meno positivo è il risultato dell’analisi della rinnovazione, che ha permesso di individuare appena una trentina di giovani individui di ginepro e nessuno di olivastro. La presenza delle due specie sull’isola risulta circoscritta esclusivamente ai valloni stretti ed incisi che sboccano sulla costa meridionale dell’isola, disegnando un complesso sistema in cui si alternano profonde insenature e pendii rocciosi subpianeggianti. Per ambedue le specie si è registrata una netta prevalenza (ca. 80% dei ginepri e ca. 95% degli olivastri!) in corrispondenza delle esposizioni meridionali dell’isola che, sebbene più soleggiate godono dell’effetto benefico dei venti umidi provenienti da meridione.

The 4th National Report ex Art. 17 of the 92/43/EEC Directive in Italy (period 2013-2018) will try to fill a number of gaps still affecting the former versions of the Italian Reports, where territorial data were still missing for large parts of the country and the assessment was mostly based on the use of the expert opinion. Similar inconsistencies also emerged in other European countries (State of nature in the EU, EEA 2015). In order to reach this aim, a nationally shared protocol for monitoring the vegetation-based Annex I Habitats is currently under development. The most prominent issues addressed by the ongoing project are: i) fixing standardized, updated and scientifically grounded methodological tools, on the basis of the European guidelines (Evans & Arvela 2011, ETC-BD); ii) providing comparable data at national and European level; iii) harmonizing the territorially fragmented knowledge and iv) supporting nationally standardized measures for the conservation of terrestrial, brackish and freshwater Habitats. Promoted by the Italian Ministry for Environment (MATTM) and coordinated by the environmental agency ISPRA, the development of such a tool is being carried out by the Italian Society for Vegetation Science, with the support of a large team of experts. Open issues, such as the favourable reference values and the optimal thresholds for each considered parameter (range,area, structure and function), have to be dealt with, in a condition of large uncertainty. Due to its centrality in the assessment process, especially the concept of "typical species" should be developed with care, trying to combine the need for synthetic indicators with the great floristic diversity of the Italian Habitats. A clear definition of the parameters is crucial for a correct application of the monitoring protocol, to successfully contribute to the whole process of halting biodiversity loss in Europe.

The richness and uniqueness of the flora growing on gypsum substrates in Italy is known since the XIX century (Macchiati, 1888). Furthermore, the concept of plant gypsophily can be defined as the exclusiveness (or virtually exclusiveness) for living in gypsum outcropping rocks. Thus only those plant species, which show preference – or even exclusivity - for gypsum substrates, would be classified as gipsophilous (Mota et al., 2011). The main aim of this research has been the elaboration of a checklist of the Italian gypsophilous flora. The study was made possible through international collaboration between the "Mediterranea" University of Reggio Calabria (Italy) and the University of Almería (Spain). During the first step, an extensive literature review has been carried out in order to collect all available information about gypsophilous flora and to compile a preliminary list. Afterwards 18 regional botanists experts on Italian gypsum flora have been asked to rank the preference of these species for gypsum soils. Following the methodology proposed by Mota et al. (2009), the gypsophilous character of more than 100 plant species has been thus ranked on a scale ranging from 1 to 5 (with 5 representing for a total dependence on gypsum substrates). According to the obtained values, all the plant species, ranking between absolute or preferent gypsophytes, will figure in the final checklist of the gypsophytes of the whole Italian territory.
