1. Are Charter Value and Supervision Aligned? A Segmentation Analysis

Abstract

Previous work suggests that the charter value hypothesis is theoretically grounded and empirically supported, but not universally. Accordingly, this paper aims to perform an analysis of the relations between charter value, risk taking, and supervision, taking into account the relations' complexity. Specifically, using the CAMELS rating system as a general framework for supervision, we study how charter value relates to risk and supervision by means of classification and regression tree analysis. The sample covers the period 2005-2016 and consists of listed banks in countries that were members of the Eurozone when it came into existence, along with Greece. To evaluate the crisis consequences, we also separately analyze four subperiods and countries that required financial aid from third parties and those that did not so, along with large and small banks. Our results reflect the complexity of the relations between charter value, supervision, and risk. Abstract

Neural systems are comprised of interacting units, and relevant information regarding their function or malfunction can be inferred by analyzing the statistical dependencies between the activity of each unit. Whilst correlations and mutual information are commonly used to characterize these dependencies, our objective here is to extend interactions to triplets of variables to better detect and characterize dynamic information transfer. Our approach relies on the measure of interaction information (II). The sign of II provides information as to the extent to which the interaction of variables in triplets is redundant (R) or synergetic (S). Here, based on this approach, we calculated the R and S status for triplets of electrophysiological data recorded from drug-resistant patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy in order to study the spatial organization and dynamics of R and S close to the epileptogenic zone (the area responsible for seizure propagation). In terms of spatial organization, our results show that R matched the epileptogenic zone while S was distributed more in the surrounding area. In relation to dynamics, R made the largest contribution to high frequency bands (14-100Hz), whilst S was expressed more strongly at lower frequencies (1-7Hz). Thus, applying interaction information to such clinical data reveals new aspects of epileptogenic structure in terms of the nature (redundancy vs. synergy) and dynamics (fast vs. slow rhythms) of the interactions. We expect this methodology, robust and simple, can reveal new aspects beyond pair-interactions in networks of interacting units in other setups with multi-recording data sets (and thus, not necessarily in epilepsy, the pathology we have approached here)., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures, 3 supplementary figures. The presence of spikes and sharp waves in the recordings of epileptic patients may contaminate background signal synchronization in different ways. In this Technical Note, we present a simple procedure for assessing whether a particular synchronization method should be used (or not) with data from neurophysiological recordings commonly used to evaluate epilepsy. The information provided by this procedure makes it possible to differentiate true background synchronization from spike synchronization. 34. Double-Notch Frequency-Coded Corner Reflectors for Sub-THz Chipless RFID Tags

Abstract

Frequency-coded corner reflectors (CR) have been proposed as an essential component of chipless indoor localization systems at subterahertz frequencies. These tags operate by encoding a notch in the frequency domain of the otherwise stable backscattered power spectrum by a CR. The current state-of-the-art in the WR-3 band (220 GHz to 330 GHz) is based on single notch frequency selective surfaces (FSS), whose maximum number of implementable frequency codes is too few for indoor localization applications. This work proposes the coding of the CR with a single layer FSS implementing two notches, using split ring resonators (SRRs) with two different resonance frequencies. The concept is demonstrated by encoding the response of a 3 cm edge CR with an FSS resonating at 242 GHz and 308 GHz. The tag achieves a maximum radar cross-section (RCS) of 3 dBsqm at 275 GHz. Four more tags are demonstrated by simply varying the radii of the SRRs. It is estimated that this approach can implement up to 15 nonoverlapping codes within the WR-3 band, three times more than the state-of-the-art.

Abstract

The traditional approach decomposing profit inefficiency into the sum of its technical and its allocative components identifies first the frontier projection of each firm based on the exogenous choice of a specific technical measure, e.g., based on slacks, directional, etc. However, in real life situations, firms and organizations are interested in benchmarking themselves against competitors representing the largest feasible profit improvement given market prices. Resorting to the recently defined general direct approach decomposition of profit inefficiency, which decomposes profit loss into the profit technical gap existing between the firm and its frontier projection, and a remaining profit allocative gap, we introduce a decomposition that endogenizes the technical component. This is achieved by securing technical inefficiency reductions that, simultaneously, search to maximize the profit of the projected benchmark. The proposal defines a new measure of technical inefficiency that corresponds to a monetized version of the weighted additive model. We also present a normalized version of the reversed decomposition that is units’ invariant through the definition of a suitable normalization factor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
