Predicting the future abundance and distribution of introduced alien species is crucial to mitigate their impact on ecosystems, but this has been shown to be highly challenging. A good approach to obtain crucial clues to the root causes behind dynamic changes over time and space of invasive species is historical re surveys. Barcelona holds one of the largest densities in Europe of monk parakeets Myiopsitta monachus, a highly successful invasive avian alien species. In this study, we evaluate population size, population growth rates and range expansion across the city, performing periodic nest and chamber counts from detection of the first nest in 1976 to 2022. Population estimates of monk parakeets during the study period showed a steady increase, reaching 6,444 ± 449 individuals in 2022. The population exhibited exponential growth with a mean population growth rate of r = 0.19 per year, which means a population doubling time of 3.7 years. Fur thermore, two phases were evident: the first from 1976 to 1994 with a growth rate of 0.37 and a population doubling time of 1.9 years; and the second from 1999 to 2022 with a growth rate of 0.08 and a time to double the population of nine years. Moreover, we document the expansion of the range during our study through the colonisation of new areas, which fitted to a diffusion model for the whole period. Una buena manera de obtener pistas cruciales sobre las causas fundamentales de los cambios dinámicos en el tiempo y el espacio de las especies invasoras son los nuevos estudios históricos. Barcelona tiene una de las mayores densidades de Europa de cotorra argentina, Myiopsitta monachus, una especie de ave exótica invasora de gran éxito. En este estudio, evaluamos el tamaño de la población, la tasa de crecimiento demográfico y la expansión del área de distribución en toda la ciudad, realizando conteos periódicos de nidos y cámaras desde que se detectó el primer nido en 1976 hasta 2022. Las estimaciones de la población de cotorra argentina durante el período de estudio mostraron un aumento constante hasta llegar a 6.444 ± 449 individuos en 2022. La población creció exponencialmente con una tasa media de crecimiento demográfico de r = 0,19 por año, lo que significa que el tiempo de duplicación poblacional es de 3,7 años. Además, se podían diferenciar dos fases: la primera de 1976 a 1994, con una tasa de crecimiento de 0,37 y un tiempo de duplicación de la población de 1,9 años, y la segunda de 1999 a 2022, con una tasa de crecimiento de 0,08 y un tiempo para duplicar la población de nueve años. Además, documentamos la expansión del área de distribución durante nuestro estudio mediante la colonización de nuevas áreas, que se ajustó a un modelo de difusión durante todo el período. Actualmente, la tasa de crecimiento de la población de cotorra argentina no parece estar limitada por los recursos, la disponibilidad de nidos, las enfermedades ni los depredadores y prevemos que la especie continúe aumentando y ampliando su área de distribución si no se toman medidas de control.

This research aims to diagnose the energy performance of buildings in València and identify areas where energy efficiency can be improved. The energy performance results of all 129,487 EPCs in the city were mapped and compared to socioeconomic variables to gain insights into the reasons behind the results. The study reveals that the city's building stock has poor energy performance, attributed to the lack of building standards during the city's expansion in the 1960s and 1970s. The worst energy performances are observed in the peripheral districts, particularly in the city's northern half, where low-income and low-renting rates are common, resulting in reduced investment capacity for individuals to retrofit their homes. To promote quick dissemination of measures to retrofit households, they must be adequate, economical, and replicable, avoiding social, administrative, and economic barriers. The study highlights the importance of EPCs as an objective tool to diagnose the energy efficiency of a city's building stock. Policymakers can use the findings to identify areas that require improvements and evaluate the appropriate actions to improve the building stock's energy performance. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has become a growing risk factor of some non-communicable diseases. Increase of greenhouse gas emissions affects the planet.To assess the association between MetS severity and amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted in an adult population.Cross-sectional study (n = 6646; 55-76-year-old-men; 60-75-year-old-women with MetS).Dietary habits were assessed using a pre-validated semi quantitative 143-item food frequency questionnaire. The amount of CO2 emitted due to the production of food consumed by person and day was calculated using a European database, and the severity of the MetS was calculated with the MetS Severity Score.Higher glycaemia levels were found in people with higher CO2 emissions. The risk of having high severe MetS was related to high CO2 emissions.Low CO2 emissions diet would help to reduce MetS severity. Research related to sustainable diets is is highly relevant to provide better understanding of the impact of dietary intake on the health and the environment.To assess the association between the adherence to an energy-restricted Mediterranean diet and the amount of CO2 emitted in an older adult population.Using a cross-sectional design, the association between the adherence to an energy-reduced Mediterranean Diet (erMedDiet) score and dietary CO2 emissions in 6646 participants was assessed.Food intake and adherence to the erMedDiet was assessed using validated food frequency questionnaire and 17-item Mediterranean questionnaire. Sociodemographic characteristics were documented. Environmental impact was calculated through greenhouse gas emissions estimations, specifically CO2 emissions of each participant diet per day, using a European database. Participants were distributed in quartiles according to their estimated CO2 emissions expressed in kg/day: Q1 (≤2.01 kg CO2), Q2 (2.02-2.34 kg CO2), Q3 (2.35-2.79 kg CO2) and Q4 (≥2.80 kg CO2).More men than women induced higher dietary levels of CO2 emissions. Participants reporting higher consumption of vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, whole cereals, preferring white meat, and having less consumption of red meat were mostly emitting less kg of CO2 through diet. Participants with higher adherence to the Mediterranean Diet showed lower odds for dietary CO2 emissions: Q2 (OR 0.87; 95%CI: 0.76-1.00), Q3 (OR 0.69; 95%CI: 0.69-0.79) and Q4 (OR 0.48; 95%CI: 0.42-0.55) vs Q1 (reference).The Mediterranean diet can be environmentally protective since the higher the adherence to the Mediterranean diet, the lower total dietary CO2 emissions. Background: A major barrier to a healthy diet may be the higher price of healthy foods compared to low-quality foods. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the association between the monetary cost of food and diet quality in Spanish older adults at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis was carried out in Spanish older adults (n = 6,838; 48.6% female). A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intake. Metabolic syndrome severity, adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), adherence to a provegetarian dietary pattern, and dietary inflammatory index were assessed. The economic cost of the foods was obtained from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food database (2015–2017, the period of time when the participants were recruited). The total cost of diet adjusted per 1,000 kcal was computed. Results: The healthier dietary pattern was associated with a higher cost of the diet. Higher adherence to the MedDiet, anti-inflammatory diet, and the healthy version of the provegetarian dietary pattern were related to higher costs of the diet. Conclusion: Higher diet quality was associated with a higher dietary cost of the diet per 1,000 kcal/day. Food prices can be an important component of interventions and policies aimed at improving people's diets and preventing diet-related chronic diseases. NGS long-reads sequencing technologies (or third generation) such as Pacific BioSciences (PacBio) have revolutionized the sequencing field over the last decade improving multiple genomic applications like de novo genome assemblies. However, their error rate, mostly involving insertions and deletions (indels), is currently an important concern that requires special attention to be solved. Multiple algorithms are available to fix these sequencing errors using short reads (such as Illumina), although they require long processing times and some errors may persist. Here, we present Accurate long-Reads Assembly correction Method for Indel errorS (ARAMIS), the first NGS long-reads indels correction pipeline that combines several correction software in just one step using accurate short reads. As a proof OF concept, six organisms were selected based on their different GC content, size and genome complexity, and their PacBio-assembled genomes were corrected thoroughly by this pipeline. We found that the presence of systematic sequencing errors in long-reads PacBio sequences affecting homopolymeric regions, and that the type of indel error introduced during PacBio sequencing are related to the GC content of the organism. The lack of knowledge of this fact leads to the existence of numerous published studies where such errors have been found and should be resolved since they may contain incorrect biological information. ARAMIS yields better results with less computational resources needed than other correction tools and gives the possibility of detecting the nature of the found indel errors found and its distribution along the genome. In the present work, the recurring topic of a point sources of light is extended to spherical sources of light, through a simple experimental setup and the modeling of light intensity as the sum of point sources. The results show that the model remarkably fits to measurements in the near field when we include an angular response function of the light sensor of a smartphone used as a light detector. The response function in the form of a modified cosine turns out to be important for modeling the illuminance in the near field zone. Additionally, far field illuminance measurements are used to determine luminous flux of two spherical sources, LED type, with notably different radii, obtaining discrepancies of less than 3% compared to the nominal values, where the limited opening angle of the light source has been considered., En el presente trabajo se extiende el tópico recurrente de una fuente de luz puntual al de fuentes de luz esféricas, a través de un simple montaje experimental y el modelamiento de la intensidad de luz como suma de fuentes puntuales. Los resultados muestran que el modelo ajusta notablemente a las mediciones en el campo cercano cuando incluimos una función de respuesta angular del sensor de luz de un smartphone usado como detector de luz. La función de respuesta en forma de coseno modificado resulta ser importante para modelar la Iuminancia en la zona de campo cercano. Adicionalmente, las mediciones de Iluminancia en el campo lejano son usadas para determinar el flujo luminoso de dos fuentes esféricas, tipo LED, de radios notablemente diferentes, obteniendo discrepancias menores al 3% comparados con los valores nominales, en donde se ha considerado el ángulo de apertura limitado de la fuente de luz.
