Objectives: Maternal syphilis can lead to serious adverse pregnancy outcomes, including neonatal death. A 4-fold decline in blood non-treponemal titer at six months after the treatment of syphilis compared to the baseline is considered as an adequate serological response. However, the duration of normal human gestation does not allow the ascertainment of an adequate serological response. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess correlations between the lack of a 4-fold decrease in non-treponemal titer by delivery after syphilis treatment and fetal and newborns' condition and serological outcomes. Methods: Fourteen pregnant patients (gestational age 16–22 weeks) diagnosed with early syphilis (secondary or latent) were treated with intramuscular benzathine penicillin and subsequently monitored clinically, serologically, and ultrasonographically at monthly intervals. Based on the non-treponemal test results at delivery, patients were stratified into two groups: those with a 4-fold decline in titers and those without such a decline. All newborns were clinically and serologically assessed for congenital syphilis at birth and then monitored until serological tests became negative. Results: Fifty percent of the included women did not achieve a 4-fold decline in non-treponemal titer by delivery. Patients from the group showing a 4-fold decline in RPR titer at delivery and those without such a decline did not differ in basic demographic and clinical characteristics or in ultrasound parameters used for fetal assessment. Based on the clinical and laboratory assessments of newborns on the day of delivery and during a 6-month follow-up, none were diagnosed with congenital syphilis or required treatment for syphilis. Conclusions: The lack of an adequate serological response to syphilis therapy by delivery among patients treated between 16 and 22 weeks of pregnancy does not appear to be associated with adverse fetal and neonatal outcomes. Actinic keratosis is a common skin condition that has the potential to develop into malignant neoplastic lesions. Factors that are known to increase the likelihood of developing actinic keratosis include older age, male gender, UV exposure, and immunosuppressive treatment. Understanding the pathogenesis and significance of actinic keratosis as an initial form of the neoplastic process associated with a sequence of lesions arising on photodamaged skin has led to the concept of field cancerization. The choice of the optimal therapeutic pathway depends on the number of actinic keratosis lesions and the degree of photodamage in the skin, as well as the advancement of skin lesions. The clinical presentation of skin lesions also allows monitoring of the patient's condition over time and assessing response to treatment, and facilitates rational decisions regarding potential therapy adjustments. This article outlines the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of actinic keratosis in Poland and presents an evidence-based management regimen that incorporates the practical clinical experience of dermatology experts. The recommendations cover a range of topics including topical treatment options, cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy with a photosensitizing agent, and combination treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of non-cicatricial hair loss both in male and female patients. The pathomechanism of the disease involves chronic and progressive miniaturization of hair follicles, which leads to the conversion of terminal hair to vellus hair. Minoxidil is a first-line drug in the treatment of female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Aim: The study is aimed at verifying whether the degree of scalp vascularization has an impact on the efficacy of topical 5% minoxidil treatment. Material and methods: The study involved a group of 76 patients diagnosed with FPHL, who underwent a scalp biopsy for a histological examination of their scalp vascularization. The patients were divided into two groups, with rich and poor scalp vasculature. In all patients, topical treatment with 5% minoxidil was applied for a minimum of 6 months, followed by video-trichoscopic assessment. Results: A significant increase in the total count was observed 6 months into the treatment as compared with baseline, and a decrease in the number of single hair per follicle. It was observed that the number of single hair units had gone down in 50.67% of patients. The study also demonstrated an increase in the total hair count in 57.33% of patients as well as no drops in the total count in 68% of patients, following 6 months of treatment. Conclusions: Patients responded equally well to the applied topical minoxidil treatment, irrespectively of the number of blood vessels in the scalp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
