3. The aerodynamic interaction between inverted multi-element wings & rotating wheels in ground effect : a comprehensive investigation

Abstract

This thesis demonstrates the research conducted to investigate the aerodynamic interaction between an inverted wing of varying spans in ground effect and a rotating wheel in a straight-line, a cornering and a fixed yaw condition. Experimental methods such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and force-balance measurements were performed to validate the data obtained from Detached Eddy Simulations (DES) that formed the basis of the numerical simulations. During the validation, whilst the flow predictions by the DES k-ω SST and the DES Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) models correlated well with the experimental data for the wing geometry, only the flow prediction from the DES k-ω SST model correlated well for the wheel geometry, and significantly outperformed the DES S-A model. After the analysis of the wing and wheel geometries in an isolated configuration, placing the two com- ponents together in the straight-line condition revealed a highly complex interaction that was strongly dependent on the wingspan. In all cases, the wing experienced a downforce and drag reduction relative to the isolated configuration, with the wing that fully overlapped the wheel experiencing the largest loss of 35% and 43%, respectively, due to the high pressure on the front face of the wheel impinging onto its surfaces. The modifications to the wheel's wake topology were ascribed to the introduction of the wing's endplate vortices and the wing-induced upwash and crossflows, particularly the interaction of these flow features with the wheel's upper vortices. The cornering condition led to little change to the wing's downforce, whilst the drag increased by approximately 10% relative to the straight-line condition. The wake, however, was noticeably modified immediately behind the wheel, with two factors being responsible for this: the freestream crossflow over the wheel that influenced the strength and positioning of the upper wheel vortices, and the changes to the strengths and paths of the endplate vortices. Together with the trajectory of the freestream flow, the wake's downstream evolution was notably different from a topological and a positional perspective. The fixed yaw condition was derived from the cornering condition to investigate the validity of ap- proximating the effects of cornering in a wind tunnel environment. It was found that the wing generated very similar downforce and drag levels to the cornering condition, although topological and positional differences in the wheel wake occurred. These were due to the difference in the crossflow over the wheels that led to the different strengths and positioning of the upper wheel vortices, together with the differences in the strengths of the endplate vortices and the trajectory of the freestream flow.

Abstract

AimsWe compared feasibility, quality and outcomes of visual field (VF) testing in children with neuro-ophthalmic disease between the discontinued 'gold-standard' Goldmann and Octopus perimeters.MethodsChildren with neuro-ophthalmic disease, attending Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, were assessed using standardised protocols by one examiner in a single sitting, using Goldmann and Octopus kinetic perimetry. Outputs were classified to compare severity of loss and defect type. Test quality was assessed using both qualitative and quantitative methods.ResultsThirty children (40% female) aged 5-15 years participated. Goldmann perimetry was completed in full by 90.0% vs 72.4% for Octopus. Inability to plot the blind spot was the most common reason for not completing testing. Over 75% completed a test in ≤20 min. Duration was similar between perimeters (paired t-test, mean difference: 0.48min (-1.2, 2.2), p=0.559). The lowest quality tests were for Octopus perimetry in children

Abstract

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are used to prevent fatal and nonfatal pulmonary embolism in patients who otherwise cannot receive anticoagulation for venous thrombosis. While generally safe and effective, complications can arise, especially after prolonged implantation. Timely retrieval is essential once the indication for insertion has resolved. However, encountering patients with long-standing embedded filters is not uncommon. This case report discusses the successful retrieval of a permanent Greenfield IVC filter after 29 years. 27. Glycaemic influences on the ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1)

Abstract

Increased glucose levels are associated with increased risk of vascular disease. The risk is elevated 2-4 fold in type 2 diabetes and there is a positive relationship between glucose (or HbA1c) levels and vascular disease in the general population. We tested the hypothesis that there is a glycaemia-mediated impairment of reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) by studying an early key step, notably the expression and activity of the ATP binding cassette transporter-A1 (ABCA1). This protein exports cellular cholesterol to apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA-I), thereby forming nascent HDL. In this thesis, it is shown that ABCA1 gene expression in leukocytes in men is reduced in Type 2 diabetes and correlates negatively with circulating HbA1c levels and fasting glucose. This confirms our earlier findings in healthy men. An independent relationship between glycaemia and leukocyte ABCG1 gene expression was not seen. ABCA1 protein concentrations in blood leukocytes were reduced in patients with diabetes. ApoA-I-mediated cholesterol efflux in cultured fibroblasts taken from subjects was studied as a measure of ABCA1 function. This negatively associated with fasting glucose at the time of sampling as well as adiposity. Cellular cholesterol removal was reduced in subjects with diabetes compared with controls. There was a positive relationship between both ABCA1 function and leukocyte protein concentration with circulating HDL cholesterol. These relationships were independent of expression of liver X receptor-α (LXRα) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ). These data imply a persistent glycaemia-mediated suppression of an early step in RCT which may contribute to the excess vascular disease observed in such patients. It further proposes impaired cholesterol efflux may contribute to the low circulating HDL cholesterol which is commonly seen in patients with impaired glucose regulation.

Abstract

Petrochemical and fine chemical industries face a daunting problem in recovering acetic acid from its aqueous solutions. The recovery of acetic acid could be done through esterification reaction. However, esterification is an equilibrium limited reaction. Multi-functional reactors such as chromatographic reactor (CR) and reactive distillation column (RDC) are promising technologies mainly for equilibrium limited reactions wherein reaction and separation of products are carried out in a single equipment that tends to shift the equilibrium towards the desired direction which is not possible in a classical batch reactor. Physical and chemical characterisation of ion exchange resin catalysts such as scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement, pore size distribution, elemental analysis, true density and particle size distribution were carried out to access the catalysts performance for n-hexyl acetate synthesis. Esterification of acetic acid with n-hexanol was studied with both dilute and concentrated acid in the presence of cation exchange resins (macroporous and gelular) in a jacketed stirred batch reactor to synthesise a value added ester, namely n-hexyl acetate and also to study the recovery of acetic acid from the waste aqueous streams. The effect of various parameters such as speed of agitation, catalyst particle size, feed mole ratio of n-hexanol to acetic acid, reaction temperature, catalyst loading and reusability of catalysts was studied for the optimisation of the reaction condition in a batch reactor. The non-ideality of each component in the reacting mixture was accounted for by using the activity coefficient via the use of the UNIFAC group contribution method. The kinetic data were correlated with both pseudo-homogeneous (PH) and adsorption based heterogeneous reaction rate models, e.g., Eley-Rideal (ER), Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Hougen-Watson (LHHW), and the modified LHHW (ML). Pseudo-homogeneous (PH) model gave the best representation of the kinetic data found experimentally. The feasibility of reactive distillation for the recovery of acetic acid using n-hexanol was evaluated through residue curve map (RCM) determination experiments. RCM provides information to a design engineer of the existence of separation boundaries imposed by the singular points corresponding to the reactive/non-reactive azeotropes, thus provides an insight into the feasibility of reactive distillation for this purpose. A laboratory scale batch chromatographic reactor was designed and constructed. Batch chromatographic reactor experiments were carried out using different parameters such as feed flow rate, feed mole ratio of n-hexanol to acetic acid, desorbent (n-hexanol) flow rate and reaction step to maximise the formation of n-hexyl acetate as well to achieve complete conversion of acetic acid. Continuous chromatographic reactor was designed, constructed and commissioned on the basis of the results obtained from the batch chromatographic reactor experiments. The experiments carried out in continuous chromatographic reactor correlated very well with the results from the batch chromatographic reactor for the optimised condition.

Abstract

Aims: To investigate characteristics of people hospitalized with coronavirus-disease-2019 (COVID-19) and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state (HHS), and to identify risk factors for mortality and intensive care admission. Materials and methods: Retrospective cohort study with anonymized data from the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists nationwide audit of hospital admissions with COVID-19 and diabetes, from start of pandemic to November 2021. The primary outcome was inpatient mortality. DKA and HHS were adjudicated against national criteria. Age-adjusted odds ratios were calculated using logistic regression. Results: In total, 85 confirmed DKA cases, and 20 HHS, occurred among 4073 people (211 type 1 diabetes, 3748 type 2 diabetes, 114 unknown type) hospitalized with COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to explore the presenting dental status of OPC patients based on HPV status at the pre-radiotherapy phase.

Abstract

Modern design methodologies for control systems create controllers with dynamics which are of a similar order to the physical system being controlled. When these are implemented digitally as Infinite Impulse Response (HR) filters the processing requirements are extensive, in particular when high sample rates are necessary to minimise the detrimental effects of sample delay. The aim of the research was to apply signal processing techniques to facilitate the implementation of control algorithms in digital form, with the principal objective of maximising the computational efficiency, either to achieve the highest possible sample rates using a given processor, or to minimise the processor complexity for a given requirement. One of the approaches is to design a fixed point processor whose architecture is optimised to meet the computational requirements of signal processing for control, thereby maximising what can be achieved with a single processor. Hence the aim of the research was to head towards a processor architecture optimised for Control System Processing. The design of this processor is based on a unified structural form and it will be shown that controllers, represented either in state space form or as transfer functions, can be implemented using this unified structure. The structure is based on the σ-operator, which has been shown to be robust to changes in coefficients and hence require shorter coefficient wordlength to achieve a comparable performance to traditional z-operator based structures. Additionally, the σ-operator structures are also shown to have lower wordlength requirements for the internal variables. Also presented is a possible architecture for a Control System Processor and a model for the processor is developed and constructed using VHDL. This is simulated on a test bench, also designed in VHDL. The results of implementing a phase advance controller on the processor are then compared with those obtained from a MATLAB simulation.

Abstract

Aims: To investigate characteristics of people hospitalized with coronavirus‐disease‐2019 (COVID‐19) and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state (HHS), and to identify risk factors for mortality and intensive care admission. Materials and methods: Retrospective cohort study with anonymized data from the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists nationwide audit of hospital admissions with COVID‐19 and diabetes, from start of pandemic to November 2021. The primary outcome was inpatient mortality. DKA and HHS were adjudicated against national criteria. Age‐adjusted odds ratios were calculated using logistic regression. Results: In total, 85 confirmed DKA cases, and 20 HHS, occurred among 4073 people (211 type 1 diabetes, 3748 type 2 diabetes, 114 unknown type) hospitalized with COVID‐19. Mean (SD) age was 60 (18.2) years in DKA and 74 (11.8) years in HHS (p <.001). A higher proportion of patients with HHS than with DKA were of non‐White ethnicity (71.4% vs 39.0% p =.038). Mortality in DKA was 36.8% (n = 57) and 3.8% (n = 26) in type 2 and type 1 diabetes respectively. Among people with type 2 diabetes and DKA, mortality was lower in insulin users compared with non‐users [21.4% vs. 52.2%; age‐adjusted odds ratio 0.13 (95% CI 0.03‐0.60)]. Crude mortality was lower in DKA than HHS (25.9% vs. 65.0%, p =.001) and in statin users versus non‐users (36.4% vs. 100%; p =.035) but these were not statistically significant after age adjustment. Conclusions: Hospitalization with COVID‐19 and adjudicated DKA is four times more common than HHS but both associate with substantial mortality. There is a strong association of previous insulin therapy with survival in type 2 diabetes‐associated DKA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
