1. Temporal cavities as temporal mode filters for frequency combs

Abstract

Broadband temporal modes of pulsed optical fields have been recently recognized as very promising for photonic quantum information processing and time-frequency metrology. Exploiting their full potential demands efficient and flexible tools for their manipulation. Among the tools demonstrated surprisingly the most basic, a single-mode temporal filter, is missing. In this work, we propose an experimentally feasible approach to realize a genuine single-mode temporal filter that is based on the concept of temporal cavity, a device with temporal mode-dependent resonances in the basis of frequency comb modes. This functionality is achieved as temporal-domain analogy of spatial-mode cleaner cavities. This device will enable robust temporal mode filtering and detection, opening new prospects in time-frequency metrology and multidimensional quantum information processing.

2. A modal approach to quantum temporal imaging

Abstract

We consider the problem of quantum temporal imaging in the case where the time lens is implemented by a Sum Frequency Generation nonlinear process, in particular when the device is operated close to 100% conversion efficiency. In the general case where the time lens also presents a finite aperture and a non-perfect phase-matching the relevant figures of merit, as for example the temporal resolution, do not have an explicit expression. As a consequence, the performances of imaging scheme are difficult to assess. Having a reliable estimation of these figures of merits is particularly important because they can be significantly different from the regime of low conversion efficiency usually considered in classical temporal imaging. We show that this problem can be approached in terms of the eigenmodes of the imaging scheme and we show how its relevant figures of merit can be extracted from the modal description of the imaging scheme. As a consequence we obtain criteria allowing to design imaging schemes with close to unity efficiencies.

3. Thermal-difference states of light: quantum states of heralded photons

Abstract

We introduce the thermal-difference states (TDS), a three-parameter family of single-mode non-Gaussian bosonic states whose density operator is a weighted difference of two thermal states. We show that the states of "heralded photons" generated via parametric down-conversion (PDC) are precisely those among the TDS that are nonclassical, meaning they have a negative $P$-function. The three parameters correspond in that context to the initial brightness of PDC and the transmittances, characterizing the linear loss in the signal and the idler channels. At low initial brightness and unit transmittances, the heralded photon state is known to be a single-photon state. We explore the influence of brightness and linear loss on the heralded state of the signal mode. In particular, we analyze the influence of the initial brightness and the loss on the state nonclassicality by computing several measures of nonclassicality, such as the negative volume of the Wigner function, the sum of quantum Fisher information for two quadratures, and the ordering sensitivity, introduced recently by us [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 080402 (2019)]. 4. Quantum teleportation of qudits by means of generalized quasi-Bell states of light

Abstract

Quantum superpositions of coherent states are produced both in microwave and optical domains, and are considered realizations of the famous "Schr\"odinger cat" state. The recent progress shows an increase in the number of components and the number of modes involved. Our work creates a theoretical framework for treatment of multicomponent two-mode Schr\"odinger cat states. We consider a class of single-mode states, which are superpositions of $N$ coherent states lying on a circle in the phase space. In this class we consider an orthonormal basis created by rotationally-invariant circular states (RICS). A two-mode extension of this basis is created by splitting a single-mode RICS on a balanced beam-splitter. We show that these states are generalizations of Bell states of two qubits to the case of $N$-level systems encoded into superpositions of coherent states on the circle, and we propose for them the name of generalized quasi-Bell states. We show that using a state of this class as a shared resource, one can teleport a superposition of coherent states on the circle (a qudit). Differently from some other existing protocols of quantum teleportation, the proposed protocol provides the unit fidelity for all input states of the qudit. We calculate the probability of success for this type of teleportation and show that it approaches unity for the average number of photons in one component above $N^2$. 5. Quantum temporal imaging: application of a time lens to quantum optics

We consider application of a temporal imaging system, based on the sum-frequency generation, to a nonclassical, in particular, squeezed optical temporal waveform. We analyze the restrictions on the pump and the phase matching condition in the summing crystal, necessary for preserving the quantum features of the initial waveform. We show that modification of the notion of the field of view in the quantum case is necessary, and that the quantum field of view is much narrower than the classical one for the same temporal imaging system. These results are important for temporal stretching and compressing of squeezed fields, used in quantum-enhanced metrology and quantum communications., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We investigate theoretically the generation of nonlinear dissipative structures in optomechanical (OM) systems containing discrete arrays of mechanical resonators. We consider both hybrid models in which the optical system is a continuous multimode field, as it would happen in an OM cavity containing an array of micro-mirrors, and also fully discrete models in which each mechanical resonator interacts with a single optical mode, making contact with Ludwig & Marquardt [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 073603 (2013)]. Also, we study the connections between both types of models and continuous OM models. While all three types of models merge naturally in the limit of a large number of densely distributed mechanical resonators, we show that the spatial localization and the pattern formation found in continuous OM models can be still observed for a small number of mechanical elements, even in the presence of finite-size effects, which we discuss. 7. Entanglement of quantum circular states of light

Abstract

We present a general approach to calculating the entanglement of formation for superpositions of two-mode coherent states, placed equidistantly on a circle in the phase space. We show that in the particular case of rotationally-invariant circular states the Schmidt decomposition of two modes, and therefore the value of their entanglement, are given by analytical expressions. We analyse the dependence of the entanglement on the radius of the circle and number of components in the superposition. We also show that the set of rotationally-invariant circular states creates an orthonormal basis in the state space of the harmonic oscillator, and this basis is advantageous for representation of other circular states of light., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We calculate the Schmidt number for a two-dimensional model of the nonfactorable spatiotemporal wave-function of biphotons produced in type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion with degenerate and collinear phase- matching taking into consideration a major part of the broad spectral and angular bandwidth of the down- converted light. We derive an analytical expression for the Schmidt number as a function of the filter bandwidth in the limit of spectrally narrow pump.

New Italian data on the distribution of Annex I Habitats are reported in this contribution. Specifically, 8 new occurrences in Natura 2000 sites are presented and 27 new cells are added in the EEA 10 km × 10 km reference grid. The new data refer to the Italian administrative regions of Apulia, Campania, Calabria, Lazio, Tuscany, Umbria, Sardinia, and Sicily.

Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of tunnel collisions of the fibular collateral ligament (FCL) and posterolateral bundle anterior cruciate ligament (PLB-ACL) tunnels during a combined FCL and double-dundle (DB) ACL reconstruction. METHODS: Thirty-six 4th-generation synthetic femurs (Sawbones, Pacific Research Laboratories, Vashon, WA) were utilized, and two different femur sizes were used. A FCL tunnel and a PLB-ACL tunnel were reamed on each femur. The tunnels of synthetic specimens that did not have a collision were filled with an epoxy resin augmented with BaSO(4) and radiographic evaluation, and Multidetector CT exams of the specimens were performed. RESULTS: The rate of tunnel collision when the FCL tunnel was reamed to a depth of 30 mm was 75 and 69.4% for the 25 mm depth. There was a significantly increased risk of tunnel collision when the FCL tunnel was reamed proximally with coronal angulations of 20° and 40°. No collisions were noted when the FCL tunnel was reamed parallel to the distal condylar line and with axial angulations of 20° and 40°. CONCLUSION: This study provides new insight into tunnel positioning during a combined FCL and DB-ACL reconstruction. The results show that a concomitant FCL injury do not represent a contraindication to perform a DB-ACL reconstruction as long as the FCL tunnel is reamed with no proximal angulation and is directed anteriorly with an axial angulation between 20° and 40°.

Abstract

Obiettivi didattici: Descrivere e caratteristiche alla risonanza magnetica (RM) delle neuropatie da intrappolamento comuni della spalla: - sindrome di Parsonage-Turner - sindrome del quadrilatero (neuropatia ascellare) - sindrome del nervo soprascapolare Introduzione: Le neuropatie da intrappolamento sono caratterizzate da alterazione della funzionalità dei nervi secondaria alla compressione da parte di forze meccaniche o dinamiche. La compressione può essere acuta, cronica o intermittente. Non di rado neuropatie compressive sono dovute a lesioni occupanti spazio, come tumori, cisti, processi infiammatori, o condizioni post-traumatiche. Descrizione: L'aspetto RM della sindrome di Parsonage-Turner è abbastanza caratteristico, con edema marcato nei muscoli interessati della spalla, più comunemente quelli innervati dal nervo soprascapolare, anche se può essere compromesso pure il muscolo deltoide. L'imaging RM della sindrome dello spazio quadrilatero può rivelare un'atrofia adiposa o un edema isolato del muscolo piccolo rotondo. L'imaging RM della sindrome del nervo soprascapolare è caratterizzata da edema o degenerazione adiposa del muscolo sovraspinato e/o infraspinato insieme ad una cisti o ganglio dell'incisura spino-glenoidea o di quella soprascapolare. Conclusioni: La RM è fondamentale per la diagnosi delle neuropatie da intrappolamento della spalla e delle relative cause, escludendo così altre possibili cause di dolore alla spalla. Inoltre, la RM permette di distinguere una denervazione acuta da una cronica con atrofia adiposa.

Abstract

OBIETTIVI DIDATTICI: Rivedere le basi patologiche della “Sinovite Villonodulare Pigmentosa” (PVNS) e della “Borsite Villonodulare Pigmentosa” (PVNB). Descriverne le caratteristiche alla radiografia convenzionale (RX), all’ecografia (US) ed alla risonanza magnetica (RM). INTRODUZIONE: La PVNS è un raro disordine proliferativo della sinovia articolare che si manifesta in forma diffusa o focale; può insorgere anche nelle borse peri-articolari (PVNB). Entrambe le forme interessano principalmente i giovani adulti e si manifestano con sintomi aspecifici che mimano altre patologie, anche di natura traumatica, ritardando spesso la diagnosi corretta. DESCRIZIONE: Il quadro RX può essere normale o rivelare una massa di significato aspecifico nei tessuti molli. L’US può evidenziare versamento articolare, noduli iperecogeni o un ispessimento della sinovia. La RM dimostra l’estensione della patologia (particolarmente nei casi di coinvolgimento bursale) e la caratteristica ipointensità di segnale sia nelle sequenze T1 che T2-pesate. Inoltre, le sequenze gradient-echo mostrano un segno patognomonico di questa patologia che è rappresentato dall’artefatto di “blooming”, causato dalla suscettibilità magnetica dovuto ai depositi di emosiderina intracellulare. CONCLUSIONI: Per la diagnosi e per il corretto trattamento dei pazienti con PVNS e/o PVNB l’imaging, in particolare la RM, ha un ruolo fondamentale nell’identificare la sede e dimostrare l’estensione della patologia. Inoltre, la presenza di depositi di emosiderina nei noduli aumenta la confidenza diagnostica della RM.
