1. Understanding How Programmers Can Use Annotations on Documentation

Abstract

Modern software development requires developers to find and effectively utilize new APIs and their documentation, but documentation has many well-known issues. Despite this, developers eventually overcome these issues but have no way of sharing what they learned. We investigate sharing this documentation-specific information through \textit{annotations}, which have advantages over developer forums as the information is contextualized, not disruptive, and is short, thus easy to author. Developers can also author annotations to support their own comprehension. In order to support the documentation usage behaviors we found, we built the Adamite annotation tool, which supports features such as multi-anchoring, annotation types, and pinning. In our user study, we found that developers are able to create annotations that are useful to themselves and are able to utilize annotations created by other developers when learning a new API, with readers of the annotations completing 67% more of the task, on average, than the baseline., Comment: Conditionally accepted for publication at CHI '22

5. Superworm (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae, Zophobas morio) degradation of UV-pretreated expanded polystyrene

Abstract

A laboratory-based study was conducted to investigate the consumption and degradation of expanded polystyrene (EPS) by superworms (darkling beetle larvae, Zophobas morio; heterotypic synonym Zophobas atratus). Superworms fed on one of three diets (wheat bran control, EPS blocks, or EPS S-shaped chips) following a 60-second pretreatment with UV radiation or no UV radiation exposure. Loss-of-mass measurements were conducted every week for 4 weeks. Nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and EPS degradation products in frass were determined as well as the superworm gut microbiome composition. The average loss of mass after 28 days was 34.7% for EPS blocks and 25.6% for S-shaped chips. Small quantities of nitrogen and phosphorus were found in the frass of superworms that fed on the EPS diet, but they were lower than those from wheat bran-fed superworms. Twenty-one EPS degradation products were identified in the frass of superworms on an EPS diet, including short-chain carboxylic acids, polyols, amino acids, metabolites of amino acids, and phosphoric acids. Pseudomonas aeruginosa(polystyrene degrader) and Stenotrophomonassp. (nitrogen fixer and phosphorus solubilization promoter) were identified from the guts of superworms that fed on an EPS diet. Overall, superworms have the potential to deal with plastic waste degradation problems.

Abstract

The ATLAS outreach educational portfolio has been developed to facilitate the promotion of the ATLAS project and disseminate the project’s objectives and findings to a variety of stakeholders and possible end-users, especially educators. It will contribute to the Atlantic Action Plan initiatives on Ocean Literacy with new exciting and dynamic outreach resources based on the project activities. The intended use of the portfolio is to encourage and support citizen-focused outreach activities which ensure engagement with European Citizens. Abstract

ATLAS work package 8 & 9 presentationat ATLAS 3rd General Assembly. ATLAS Work Packages 8 and 9 are dedicated to the communication and dissemination of knowledge outputs from the ATLAS project. Collectively the WPs work to ensure optimal communication, management and effective knowledge transfer of ATLAS outputs, to different end users (academia, industry, policy makers and wider society), resulting in the widest exploitation and impact possible. To achieve this, an ATLAS Dissemination and Exploitation Plan (D9.1) has been developed, implemented and is regularly updated. An ATLAS dissemination portfolio (D9.2) has been created to facilitate the promotion of the ATLAS project. A Data Management Plan has been developed which specifies how ATLAS will improve and maximise access to and re-use of research data generated by the project (D8.1). Looking forward, we aim to improve linkages with other WPs focusing on science-policy and science-industry engagements, extracting knowledge outputs and analysing their potential applications. An outreach educational programme will be developed to target public end users, ensuring the greatest impact from ATLAS and its legacy.

Abstract

Background: An ‘in‐hours’ birth represents a desired outcome following induction of labour (IOL) in terms of safety, efficiency and satisfaction. Women booked for IOL are often not commenced at their allocated times, and these sometimes complex births happen after‐hours. Aims: To measure the effect of an 11:00 hours commencement time for IOL. Materials and Methods: A discrete‐event‐simulation patient‐flow model was constructed. Multiple staffing and scheduling combinations were tested, before a brief pilot and subsequent introduction of a second IOL commencement time. A retrospective cohort study was performed using routinely collected data, comparing outcomes in two four‐month time periods, before and after introduction of the new schedule. During Time Period A, women underwent cervical ripening at 19:00 hours and were reviewed the next morning for amniotomy and oxytocin infusion (ARM/oxytocin). During Time Period B, women were either admitted at 11:00 hours for cervical ripening followed by 23:00 hours ARM/oxytocin, or at 19:00 hours for cervical ripening followed by 06:00 hours ARM/oxytocin. The primary outcome measure was the likelihood of an in‐hours birth (defined as 07:00–19:00 hours). Results: In an analysis of 1689 women undergoing IOL, the new IOL booking schedule was associated with a 14.7% increase in in‐hours birth (68.4% vs 53.7%; P < 0.01), and a corresponding reduction in overnight births. Although the IOL to birth time was unaltered, we observed a decrease in IOL delays and admission‐to‐birth time, and a greater likelihood of vaginal birth within 24 h of admission. Conclusions: Introducing a 11:00 hours start‐time for IOL has been associated with a significant increase in in‐hours births. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective To examine the association between breakfast consumption and CVD risk factors in European adolescents. Design Cross-sectional. Breakfast consumption was assessed by the statement 'I often skip breakfast' and categorized into 'consumer', 'occasional consumer' and 'skipper'. Blood pressure, weight, height, waist circumference, skinfold thickness, total cholesterol (TC), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), TAG, insulin and glucose were measured and BMI, TC:HDL-C, LDL-C:HDL-C and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) were calculated. Setting The European Union-funded HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) Study. Subjects European adolescents, aged 12·50- 17·49 years, from ten cities within the HELENA study (n 2929, n 925 with blood sample, 53 % females). Results In males, significant differences across breakfast consumption category ('consumer', 'occasional consumer' and 'skipper') were seen for age, BMI, skinfold thickness, waist circumference, cardiorespiratory fitness, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, TC:HDL-C, LDL-C:HDL-C, glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR and LDL-C; in females, for cardiorespiratory fitness, skinfold thickness, BMI, insulin and HOMA-IR. In overweight/obese males significant differences were also seen for TC and LDL-C, whereas no differences were observed in non-overweight males or in females regardless of weight status. Conclusions Our findings among European adolescents confirm previous data indicating that adolescents who regularly consume breakfast have lower body fat content. The results also show that regular breakfast consumption is associated with higher cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescents, and with a healthier cardiovascular profile, especially in males. Abstract

Objective: To describe breakfast habits on food group level in European adolescents and to investigate the associations between these habits and socio-demographic factors. Design: Cross-sectional study Setting: Secondary schools from nine European cities participating in the HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle inEuropeby Nutrition in Adolescence) Study. Breakfast habits were assessed twice using a computer-based 24-h dietary recall. Adolescents who consumed breakfast on at least one recall day were classified as ‘breakfast consumers’ and adolescents who did not have anything for breakfast on either of the two recall days were considered ‘breakfast skippers’. A ‘breakfast quality-index’ to describe breakfast quality was created based on the consumption or non-consumption of: cereals/cereal products, dairy products and fruits/vegetables. The socio-demographic factors studied were sex, age, region of Europe, maternal and paternal education, family structure and family affluence. Subjects: 2672 adolescents (12-17 years, 53 % girls). Results: The majority of the adolescents reported a breakfast that scored poorly on the breakfast quality index. Older adolescents, adolescents from the southern part of Europe and adolescents from families with low socio-economic status were more likely to consume a low-quality breakfast. Conclusion: This study highlights the need to promote the consumption of a high-quality breakfast among adolescents, particularly in older adolescents, adolescents from southern Europe and to adolescents from families with low socio-economic status, in order to improve public health.

17. Engaging the public with deep-marine ecosystems: An outreach portfolio for the ATLAS Project by Dynamic Earth

Abstract

Poster used to explain the public engagement activity plans for the ATLAS project as developed by ATLAS partner, Dynamic Earth. Abstract: ATLAS is a trans-Atlantic research project funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 Blue Growth call. It aims to increase our understanding of deep Atlantic marine ecosystems and their connections with other areas. ATLAS will also improve our ability to predict how changing environmental conditions might affect them. The information gathered will allow ATLAS to inform scientists, governments and businesses on the best ways to protect these ecosystems from issues such as climate change, pollution and certain fishing techniques. This knowledge will support sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors. Engaging the public with the outcomes of ATLAS is a key part of the project. Dynamic Earth, an Earth and Environmental Science educational charity based in Edinburgh, is tasked with creating an Outreach Portfolio for ATLAS. Here we describe various engagement tools and activities in development for this portfolio. These include new materials and innovative ideas for running family drop-in events and learning resources for Primary and Secondary school pupils, as well as concepts for an update to Dynamic Earth’s Oceans gallery. The Portfolio will form the basis for Dynamic Earth’s 2019 public engagement programme in Edinburgh and at regional science festivals across Scotland, typically reaching audiences of around 10,000 families and schoolchildren at the festivals while over 60,000 visitors to the centre will participate in ATLAS-related activities. It will also provide inspiration and resources for ATLAS partners and other centres wishing to run similar activities, utilising established Ocean Literacy networks such as Sea Change and ResponSEAble to ensure the widest possible dissemination.
