1. Graduate Student Experiences of Engineering Education Research in Canada

Abstract

In Canada, formal structures for advancing engineering education research (EER), including graduate programmes, funding, and career pathways, are uncommon. However, an active informal EER community exists. Using the Identity Trajectory Framework, we designed an exploratory basic interpretive qualitative study to learn how 21 graduate students experienced EER in Canada. EER's dualist internal identity and lack of external identity, credibility, and structural support create a feedback loop of uncertainties for graduate students trying to navigate EER. This inhibits the healthy development of EER as an academic discipline, and thereby, the healthy development of EER graduate students. If we want to successfully support graduate students in developing their identity as EER researchers, we need institutional structures. Understanding how graduate students experience EER in Canada is important to understand how to build capacity here and in other locales where the field is newly developing.

Abstract

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is involved in the discovery, evaluation, and application of low-cost air quality (AQ) sensors to support citizen scientists by directly engaging with them in the pursuit of community-based interests. The emergence of low-cost (2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensors and distributed across eight locations with four collocated weather stations to measure local meteorological parameters. During this deployment 1 h average concentrations of PM2.5 and NO2 ranged between 0.3 to 33.6 µg/m3 and 1.3 to 50.6 ppb, respectively. Peak concentrations were observed for both PM2.5 and NO2 when conditions were dominated by coastal-originated winds. These results advanced the community’s understanding of pollutant concentrations and trends while improving our understanding of the limitations and necessary procedures to properly interpret measurements produced by low-cost sensors.

Abstract

For Locke, as the standard story goes, good and evil assume a specifically moral significance only by dint of their being attached to divine legislation. This would seem to leave little to no role for intrinsically moral motives to play in reasoning practically about one’s moral duty. However, a re-examination of certain of Locke’s texts, particularly against the backdrop of the seventeenth-century Latitudinarian tradition, suggests that Locke is not uniformly committed to an externalist account of motivation. There are a number of instances throughout Locke’s works, I want to show, where he refers not only to the inherent righteousness of moral law as reason-giving for moral agents, but also to particular moral feelings as motivating moral acts.

Abstract

In recent years engineering educators have been encouraged to blend technical and professional learning in their curricular and co-curricular programing (EC, 2009; NAE, 2004). Our paper describes a multifaceted leadership learning program developed to achieve this goal by infusing reflective, experiential learning into an otherwise technically oriented discipline. The program was designed by a collaborative team of educators and researchers with backgrounds in engineering, education, psychology, and industry and offers a range of learning experiences using diverse pedagogical strategies. The content covers four realms of leadership corresponding to four levels of analysis: self, team, organization, and society. Learning experiences include elective academic courses, co-curricular workshop programs, guest lectures in core courses, seminars, department based leadership groups, and panel discussions. In this paper, we describe the program goals, curricular and co-curricular initiatives and early research findings in order to scaffold an emerging discussion about engineering leadership education in Canada. Informal feedback from students who have participated in our program provide us with preliminary evidence that students are learning, that they value the learning opportunities afforded by our program and that our initiative is enabling significant personal growth.

8. First-year Undergraduate Engineering Student Beliefs About Teamwork: A Qualitative Analysis

Abstract

This paper discusses a comparative study of first-year engineering students’ beliefs around design-based teamwork. In this study, survey data was collected from first-year students at a large research-based university in 2014 and compared to those discussed in the present literature. Using qualitative analysis, these descriptive textual responses were used to identify themes that represented specific beliefs. These themes discussed individual accountability, seeing teamwork as a collection of individual work, challenges around team member motivation, and intra-team communication challenges. When compared to the literature, themes regarding teamwork as inefficient due to experiences around unequal divisions of work and perceived skill disparity emerged as reflective of the literature. An underlying value of optimization emerged in our analysis. Tapping into this core value could enable students to develop more effective teamworking strategies.

Abstract

For all design instructors, the metaphors we select in teaching inform the process students learn. Visual metaphors of design both shape thinking and reinforce an approach to design. This paper critiques some of the most common design process models to understand how they afford and disafford student learning. We share two metaphors for our design model. We analyze their efficacy and utility for our students to try and improve the quality of our teaching and offer similar support for others making metaphors in design and elsewhere.

Abstract

Background Multimorbidity is defined as the presence of two or more chronic diseases and associated comorbidities. There is a need to improve best practices around the provision of well-coordinated, person-centered care for persons with multimorbidities. Present health systems across the European Union (EU) focus on supporting a single-disease framework of care; the primary challenge is to create a patient-centric, integrated care ecosystem to understand and manage multimorbidity. ProACT is a large-scale project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme, that involved the design, development, and evaluation of a digital health platform to improve and advance home-based integrated care, and supported self-management, for older adults (aged ≥65 years) living with multimorbidity. Objective This paper describes the trial implementation protocol of a proof-of-concept digital health platform (ProACT) in 2 EU member states (Ireland and Belgium) to support older persons with multimorbidities self-managing at home, supported by their care network (CN). Methods Research was conducted across 2 EU member states, Ireland and Belgium. A 12-month action research trial design, divided into 3 evaluation cycles and lasting 3 months each, with a reflective redesign and development phase of 1 month after cycles 1 and 2 was conducted. Participants were 120 (60/120, 50% in Ireland and 60/120, 50% in Belgium) older persons with multimorbidities diagnosed with two or more of the following chronic conditions: diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic heart failure, and cardiovascular diseases. With permission from persons with multimorbidities, members of their CN were invited to participate in the study. Persons with multimorbidities were provided with ProACT technologies (tablet, devices, or sensors) to support them in self-managing their conditions. CN members also received access to an app to remotely support their persons with multimorbidity. Qualitative and quantitative feedback and evaluation data from persons with multimorbidity and CN participants were collected across four time points: baseline (T1), at the end of each 3-month action research cycle (T2 and T3), and in a final posttrial interview (T4). Thematic analysis was used to analyze the qualitative interview data. Quantitative data were analyzed via platform use statistics (to assess engagement) and standardized questionnaires (using descriptive and inferential statistics). This study is approved by the ethics committees of Ireland and Belgium. Results The trial implementation phase for this 44-month (2016-2019) funded study was April 2018 to June 2019. The trial outcomes are at various stages of publication since 2021. Conclusions ProACT aims to co-design and develop a digital intervention with persons with multimorbidities and their CN, incorporating clinical guidelines with the state of the art in human-computer interaction, behavioral science, health psychology, and data analytic methods to deliver a digital health platform to advance self-management of multimorbidity at home, as part of a proactive, integrated model of supported person-centered care. Abstract

Aims and objectives To report the development, testing and validation of an instrument to assess the stressors experienced by student nurses during their older adult clinical placements. Background The world's population of older adults is accelerating rapidly, with associated increased healthcare demands and a growing need for skilled nursing staff. However, this sector fails to attract adequate numbers of nursing graduates which is leading to a significant gap between nursing supply and demand. Older adult care is considered to be less attractive than other specialties and accompanied by more sources of stress. Design A quantitative design was used. Methods Data were collected from a cohort of Irish student nurses (n = 242) completing older adult clinical placements as part of their undergraduate degree. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis examined the instrument's underlying latent structure. Discriminant validity was investigated using a confirmatory factor analysis model with covariates. STROBE guidelines for cross‐sectional studies informed reporting of this paper's research. Results Factor analyses identified two factors relating to “Knowledge and Workload” and “Resources,” which were assessed by nine and six items, respectively. Discriminant validity analyses found a significant relationship between age and the workload and knowledge factor, and between year of programme and the resources factor. The new instrument was labelled the Student Nurse Stressor‐15 (SNS‐15) Scale. Conclusions The SNS‐15 contained some overlap with stressors from extant general student nurse stress instruments and a number of unique stressors encountered in older adult care. Future research directions are discussed. Relevance to clinical practice The SNS‐15 may assist stakeholders in nurse education and practice with the development of undergraduate degree programmes and clinical placements, and ultimately, in improving patient care and student retention.

Abstract

This chapter explores Catharine Trotter Cockburn’s defence of Locke’s epistemology as a foundation for moral knowledge and moral obligation. In the first section of this chapter, I discuss Cockburn’s interpretation of Locke’s principle of reflection as a basis for establishing the foundation of morality in human nature itself. In the second section, I look at the way Cockburn employs her understanding of Lockean reflection to reconcile Locke’s legalistic account of moral obligation with her own anthropocentric moral theory. In this chapter, I aim to show that despite the fact that Cockburn arguably departs from Locke’s views in significant ways, she successfully demonstrates that Locke’s principles themselves provide the fundamental underpinnings of an anthropocentric morality.

Abstract

Background Populations globally are ageing, resulting in higher incidence rates of chronic diseases. Digital health platforms, designed to support those with chronic conditions to self-manage at home, offer a promising solution to help people monitor their conditions and lifestyle, maintain good health, and reduce unscheduled clinical visits. However, despite high prevalence rates of multimorbidity or multiple chronic conditions, most platforms tend to focus on a single disease. A further challenge is that despite the importance of users actively engaging with such systems, little research has explored engagement. Objective The objectives of this study are to design and develop a digital health platform, ProACT, for facilitating older adults self-managing multimorbidity, with support from their care network, and evaluate end user engagement and experiences with this platform through a 12-month trial. Methods The ProACT digital health platform is presented in this paper. The platform was evaluated in a year-long proof-of-concept action research trial with 120 older persons with multimorbidity in Ireland and Belgium. Alongside the technology, participants had access to a clinical triage service responding to symptom alerts and a technical helpdesk. Interactions with the platform during the trial were logged to determine engagement. Semistructured interviews were conducted with participants and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis, whereas usability and user burden were examined using validated questionnaires. Results This paper presents the ProACT platform and its components, along with findings on engagement with the platform and its usability. Of the 120 participants who participated, 24 (20%) withdrew before the end of the study, whereas 3 (2.5%) died. The remaining 93 participants actively used the platform until the end of the trial, on average, taking 2 or 3 health readings daily over the course of the trial in Ireland and Belgium, respectively. The participants reported ProACT to be usable and of low burden. Findings from interviews revealed that participants experienced multiple benefits as a result of using ProACT, including improved self-management, health, and well-being and support from the triage service. For those who withdrew, barriers to engagement were poor health and frustration when technology, in particular sensing devices, did not work as expected. Conclusions This is the first study to present findings from a longitudinal study of older adults using digital health technology to self-manage multimorbidity. Our findings show that older adults sustained engagement with the technology and found it usable. Potential reasons for these results include a strong focus on user-centered design and engagement throughout the project lifecycle, resulting in a platform that meets user needs, as well as the integration of behavior change techniques and personal analytics into the platform. The provision of triage and technical support services alongside the platform during the trial were also important facilitators of engagement. Abstract

The degree to which Hobbes's citizenry retains its right to resist sovereign power has been the source of a significant debate. It has been argued by a number of scholars that there is a clear avenue for legitimate rebellion in Hobbes's state, as described in the Leviathan – in this work, Hobbes asserts that subjects can retain their natural right to self-preservation in civil society, and that this represents an inalienable right that cannot, under any circumstances, be transferred to the sovereign. The conclusion frequently drawn from this feature of Hobbes's account is that it places a considerable limit on sovereign authority. The right to self-preservation has been taken as proof that Hobbes sought to ensure that the sovereign's power relies upon the continual consent of the individuals that make up his or her constituency. I want to examine Hobbes's account of this civil right in Leviathan in order to show that this line of interpretation is ultimately unfounded. While self-preservation results from the individual's own judgment of threats to her personal safety, it is justified in only the most strictly delineated contexts. Judgments regarding the overall peace and security of the state do not, and cannot, fall to individual experiences and judgments. Hobbes is quite adamant that individuals are not appropriate judges of right and wrong action in matters the sovereign legislates.

Abstract

The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) is a randomized multicenter study comparing low-dose helical computed tomography (CT) with chest radiography in the screening of older current and former heavy smokers for early detection of lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Five-year survival rates approach 70% with surgical resection of stage IA disease; however, more than 75% of individuals have incurable locally advanced or metastatic disease, the latter having a 5-year survival of less than 5%. It is plausible that treatment should be more effective and the likelihood of death decreased if asymptomatic lung cancer is detected through screening early enough in its preclinical phase. For these reasons, there is intense interest and intuitive appeal in lung cancer screening with low-dose CT. The use of survival as the determinant of screening effectiveness is, however, confounded by the well-described biases of lead time, length, and overdiagnosis. Despite previous attempts, no test has been shown to reduce lung cancer mortality, an endpoint that circumvents screening biases and provides a definitive measure of benefit when assessed in a randomized controlled trial that enables comparison of mortality rates between screened individuals and a control group that does not undergo the screening intervention of interest. The NLST is such a trial. The rationale for and design of the NLST are presented.

Abstract

Hutcheson’s theory of morality shares far more common ground with Clarke’s morality than is generally acknowledged. In fact, Hutcheson’s own view of his innovations in moral theory suggest that he understood moral sense theory more as an elaboration and partial correction to Clarkean fitness theory than as an outright rejection of it. My aim in this paper will be to illuminate what I take to be Hutcheson’s grounds for adopting this attitude toward Clarkean fitness theory. In so doing, I hope to bring to light an otherwise unexpected continuity between moral sense theory and the moral rationalism to which it is usually opposed, and, in so doing, draw attention to the anti-sceptical realism that lies at the heart of both accounts.

Abstract

Locke's moral theory consists of two explicit and distinct elements — a broadly rationalist theory of natural law and a hedonistic conception of moral good. The rationalist account, which we find most prominently in his early Essays on the Law of Nature, is generally taken to consist in three things. First, Locke holds that our moral rules are founded on universal, divine natural laws. Second, such moral laws are taken to be discoverable by reason. Third, by dint of their divine authorship, moral laws are obligatory and rationally discernible as such. Locke's hedonism, which is developed most fully in his later Essay Concerning Human Understanding, consists in the view that all good amounts to pleasure, with specifically moral good taken to consist in the pleasurable consequences of discharging one's moral duties.

This essay examines Catharine Cockburn's moral philosophy as it is developed in her Defence of Mr. Locke's Essay on Human Understanding. In this work, Cockburn argues that Locke's epistemological principles provide a foundation for the knowledge of natural law. Sheridan suggests that Cockburn's objective in defending Locke's moral epistemology was conditioned by her own prior commitment to a significantly un-Lockean theory of morality. In exploring Cockburn's views on morality in terms of their divergence from Locke's, the author hopes to underscore the extent of Cockburn's intellectual independence and her philosophical creativity.

32. The Air Sensor Citizen Science Toolbox: A Collaboration in Community Air Quality Monitoring and Mapping

Abstract

The Air Sensor Citizen Science Toolbox is being developed by the US EPA with resources and other tools that can be used by citizens to learn more about air sensor technology. The toolbox has an overarching goal of providing guidance and instructions to citizens to allow them to effectively collect, analyze, interpret, and communicate air quality data. EPA’s Office of Research and Development is collaborating with select EPA Regions and local community organizations to develop sensor packages for community-based monitoring to initiate the long-range goal. A pilot community involved in rolling out specific components of the toolbox is bordered by highways, rail yards, major port activities, international airports, and industrial facilities, amongst others. It is believed that residents might be exposed to a variety of airborne pollutants from these sources. To achieve the project’s goal to raise awareness of local air pollution levels through citizen science-based monitoring, scientists involved in the pilot project are: Working with community members to develop a study design for monitoring air quality in the community based on sound science and local community concerns; Assisting the community in selecting appropriate pollutants for citizen scientists to monitor; Providing necessary environmental sensors, one-on-one training, and written directions for sensor use; Guiding community members on data analysis, data viewing options, and communication. A future goal of this pilot project is to translate these methods across other EPA Regional offices so they can collaborate with their local community action groups and address similar issues. The Citizen Science Toolbox has the potential to be a valuable resource for such collaborations.

Abstract

Obese humans are more susceptible to death from infection with the 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza virus (pH1N1) compared with healthy weight individuals. To identify explanatory mechanisms, we utilized a mouse model of obesity and pH1N1 infection. Diet-induced obese C57BL/6J male mice and lean control mice were intranasally infected with influenza A/Cal/07/09 (pH1N1). Obese mice exhibited an 80% mortality rate, whereas no lean mice succumbed. During the infection, obese mice exhibited similar levels of lung viral titers but had elevated levels of lung inflammatory cytokines and greater lung airway damage. Further, obese mice had fewer activated lung CD4+Foxp3+CD103+ regulatory T cells. As a potential mechanism for the heightened inflammatory responses in the lungs of obese mice, we addressed the role of leptin, an immunomodulatory hormone chronically elevated in an obese state. Obese mice had more than twice as much leptin in serum and lung airways during the pH1N1 infection compared with lean mice. Given the regulatory role of leptin in T cell activity, we utilized mice lacking functional leptin receptor in T cells (LepRT-/-). LepRT-/- and LepRTfl/fl littermate controls were maintained on a high fat or low fat diet for 15 weeks. Preliminary studies indicate that disruption of leptin signaling in T cells limits pH1N1 mortality and infection severity in obese mice. Therefore, leptin signaling in T cells may be a critical mediator of pH1N1 severity in obese mice.

Abstract

Media conditioned by normal human bone marrow cells contain a specific inhibitor of haemopoietic stem cell proliferation. Molecular ultrafiltration and dose response studies indicate that it is similar to a previously described factor obtained from freshly isolated or long-term cultured murine bone marrow cells. It is suggested that the mechanisms involved in the control of murine and human stem cell proliferation may be essentially identical.
