Search

Interactions between the different degrees of freedom form the basis of many manifestations of intriguing physics in condensed matter. In this respect, quantifying the dynamics of normal modes that themselves arise from these interactions and how they interact with other excitations is of central importance. Of the different types of coupling that are often important, spin-lattice coupling is relevant to several sub-fields of condensed matter physics; examples include spintronics, high-TC superconductivity, and topological materials. While theories of materials where spin-lattice coupling is relevant can sometimes be used to infer the magnitude and character of this interaction, experimental approaches that can directly measure it are rare and incomplete. Here we use time-resolved X-ray diffraction to directly access the spin-lattice coupling by measuring both ultrafast atomic motion and the associated spin dynamics following the excitation of a coherent electromagnon by an intense THz pulse in a multiferroic hexaferrite. Comparing the dynamics of the two different components, one striking outcome is the different phase shifts relative to the driving field. This phase shift provides insight into the excitation process of such a coupled mode. This direct observation of combined lattice and magnetization dynamics paves the way to access the mode-selective spin-lattice coupling strength, which remains a missing fundamental parameter for ultrafast control of magnetism and is relevant to a wide variety of correlated electron physics., Comment: 4 figures

Optical-domain Transient Grating (TG) spectroscopy is a versatile background-free four-wave-mixing technique used to probe vibrational, magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in the time domain. The newly developed coherent X-ray Free Electron Laser sources allow its extension to the X-ray regime. Xrays offer multiple advantages for TG: their large penetration depth allows probing the bulk properties of materials, their element-specificity can address core-excited states, and their short wavelengths create excitation gratings with unprecedented momentum transfer and spatial resolution. We demonstrate for the first time TG excitation in the hard X-ray range at 7.1 keV. In Bismuth Germanate (BGO), the nonresonant TG excitation generates coherent optical phonons detected as a function of time by diffraction of an optical probe pulse. This experiment demonstrates the ability to probe bulk properties of materials and paves the way for ultrafast coherent four-wave-mixing techniques using X-ray probes and involving nanoscale TG spatial periods., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Thanks to the remarkable developments of ultrafast science, one of today's challenges is to modify material state by controlling with a light pulse the coherent motions that connect two different phases. Here we show how strain waves, launched by electronic and structural precursor phenomena, determine a macroscopic transformation pathway for the semiconducting-to-metal transition with large volume change in bistable Ti$_3$O$_5$ nanocrystals. Femtosecond powder X-ray diffraction allowed us to quantify the structural deformations associated with the photoinduced phase transition on relevant time scales. We monitored the early intra-cell distortions around absorbing metal dimers, but also long range crystalline deformations dynamically governed by acoustic waves launched at the laser-exposed Ti$_3$O$_5$ surface. We rationalize these observations with a simplified elastic model, demonstrating that a macroscopic transformation occurs concomitantly with the propagating acoustic wavefront on the picosecond timescale, several decades earlier than the subsequent thermal processes governed by heat diffusion., Comment: 30 pages (including supplementary text), 5 main figures, 9 supplementary figures; corrected author list

The three essential pillars of magnetic data storage devices are readability, writeability, and stability. However, these requirements compete as magnetic domain sizes reach the fundamental limit of single atoms and molecules. The proven magnetic bistability of individual holmium atoms on magnesium oxide appeared to operate within this magnetic trilemma, sacrificing writeability for unprecedented stability. Using the magnetic stray field created by the tip of a spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope (SP-STM), we controllably move the Ho state into the quantum regime, allowing us to write its state via the quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). We find that the hyperfine interaction causes both the excellent magnetic bistability, even at zero applied magnetic field, and the avoided level crossings which we use to control the magnetic state via QTM. We explore how to use such a system to realize a high-fidelity single atom NOT gate (inverter). Our approach reveals the prospect of combining the best traits of the classical and quantum worlds for next generation data storage.

Electron spin resonance with a scanning tunneling microscope (ESR-STM) combines the high energy resolution of spin resonance spectroscopy with the atomic scale control and spatial resolution of STM. Here we describe the upgrade of a helium-3 STM with a 2D vector-field magnet ($B_z$ = 8.0 T, $B_x$ = 0.8 T) to an ESR-STM. The system is capable of delivering RF power to the tunnel junction at frequencies up to 30 GHz. We demonstrate magnetic field sweep ESR for the model system TiH/MgO/Ag(100) and find a magnetic moment of $(1.004 \pm 0.001)$ $\mu_B$. Our upgrade enables to toggle between a DC mode, where the STM is operated with the regular control electronics, and an ultrafast-pulsed mode that uses an arbitrary waveform generator for pump-probe spectroscopy or reading of spin-states. Both modes allow for simultaneous radiofrequency excitation, which we add via a resistive pick-off tee to the bias voltage path. The RF cabling from room temperature to the 350 mK stage has an average attenuation of 18 dB between 5 and 25 GHz. The cable segment between the 350 mK stage and the STM tip presently attenuates an additional $34_{-3}^{+5}$ dB from 10 to 26 GHz and $38_{-2}^{+3}$ dB between 20 and 30 GHz. We discuss our transmission losses and indicate ways to reduce this attenuation. We finally demonstrate how to synchronize the arrival times of RF and DC pulses coming from different paths to the STM junction, a prerequisite for future pulsed ESR experiments., Comment: 7 figures

We report on the magnetic properties of HoCo dimers as a model system for the smallest intermetallic transition metal-lanthanide compound. The dimers are adsorbed on ultrathin MgO(100) films grown on Ag(100). New for $4f$ elements, we detect inelastic excitations with scanning tunneling microscopy and prove by their behaviour in applied magnetic field that they are spin-excitations. In combination with density functional theory and spin Hamiltonian analysis we determine the magnetic level distribution, as well as sign and magnitude of the exchange interaction between the two atoms. In contrast to typical $4f-3d$ bulk compounds, we find ferromagnetic coupling in the dimer.

Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) measures tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) with atomic resolution. While various methods for achieving SP probes have been developed, each is limited with respect to fabrication, performance, and allowed operating conditions. In this study, we present the fabrication and use of SP-STM tips made from commercially available antiferromagnetic $\rm{Mn_{88}Ni_{12}}$ foil. The tips are intrinsically SP, which is attractive for exploring magnetic phenomena in the zero field limit. The tip material is relatively ductile and straightforward to etch. We benchmark the conventional STM and spectroscopic performance of our tips and demonstrate their spin sensitivity by measuring the two-state switching of holmium single atom magnets on MgO/Ag(100).

One-dimensional (1D) magnetic insulators have attracted significant interest as a platform for studying emergent phenomena such as quasiparticle fractionalization and quantum criticality. The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain of spins-1/2 is an important reference system; its elementary excitations are spin-1/2 quasiparticles called spinons that are always created in pairs. However, while inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments routinely observe the excitation continuum associated with two-spinon states, the presence of more complex dynamics associated with four-spinon states has only been inferred from comparison with theory. Here, we show that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is capable of accessing the four-spinon excitations directly, in a spectroscopic region separated from the two-spinon continuum. Our results provide the first direct measurement of four-spinon excitations, which is made possible by the fundamentally different correlation functions probed by RIXS compared to INS. This advance holds great promise as a tool in the search for novel quantum states, in particular quantum spin liquids.

We use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to demonstrate that Ho atoms on magnesium oxide exhibit a coercive field of more than 8 T and magnetic bistability for many minutes, both at 35 K. The first spontaneous magnetization reversal events are recorded at 45 K for which the metastable state relaxes in an external field of 8 T. The transverse magnetic anisotropy energy is estimated from magnetic field and bias voltage dependent switching rates at 4.3 K. Our measurements constrain the possible ground state of Ho single atom magnets to either Jz = 7 or 8, both compatible with magnetic bistability at fields larger than 10 mT., Comment: 4 pages and supplemental information

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy it is revealed that in the vicinity of optimal doping the electronic structure of La2-xSrxCuO4 cuprate undergoes an electronic reconstruction associated with a wave vector q_a=(pi, 0). The reconstructed Fermi surface and folded band are distinct to the shadow bands observed in BSCCO cuprates and in underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 with x <= 0.12, which shift the primary band along the zone diagonal direction. Furthermore the folded bands appear only with q_a=(pi, 0) vector, but not with q_b= (0, pi). We demonstrate that the absence of q_b reconstruction is not due to the matrix-element effects in the photoemission process, which indicates the four-fold symmetry is broken in the system.

We use Ca doping during growth of one and two monolayer thick MgO films on Ag(100) to identify the adsorption sites of individual adatoms with scanning tunneling microscopy. For this we combine atomic resolution images of the bare MgO layer with images of the adsorbates and the substitutional Ca atoms taken at larger tip-sample distance. For Ho atoms, the adsorption sites depend on MgO thickness. On the monolayer, they are distributed on the O and bridge sites according to the abundance of those sites, 1/3 and 2/3 respectively. On the MgO bilayer, Ho atoms populate almost exclusively the O site. A third species adsorbed on Mg is predicted by density functional theory and can be created by atomic manipulation. Au atoms adsorb on the bridge sites for both MgO thicknesses, while Co and Fe atoms prefer the O sites, again for both thickness., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, part of the work presented at the DPG Spring meeting in Dresden, 2017

Engineering the electronic band structure of two-dimensional electron liquids (2DELs) confined at the surface or interface of transition metal oxides is key to unlocking their full potential. Here we describe a new approach to tailoring the electronic structure of an oxide surface 2DEL demonstrating the lateral modulation of electronic states with atomic scale precision on an unprecedented length scale comparable to the Fermi wavelength. To this end, we use pulsed laser deposition to grow anatase TiO2 films terminated by a (1 x 4) in-plane surface reconstruction. Employing photo-stimulated chemical surface doping we induce 2DELs with tunable carrier densities that are confined within a few TiO2 layers below the surface. Subsequent in-situ angle resolved photoemission experiments demonstrate that the (1 x 4) surface reconstruction provides a periodic lateral perturbation of the electron liquid. This causes strong backfolding of the electronic bands, opening of unidirectional gaps and a saddle point singularity in the density of states near the chemical potential.

In the studies of iron-pnictides, a key question is whether their bad-metal state from which the superconductivity emerges lies in close proximity with a magnetically ordered insulating phase. Recently it was found that at low temperatures, the heavily Cu-doped NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As ($x > 0.3$) iron-pnictide is an insulator with long-range antiferromagnetic order, similar to the parent compound of cuprates but distinct from all other iron-pnictides. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we determined the momentum-resolved electronic structure of NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As ($x = 0.44$) and identified that its ground state is a narrow-gap insulator. Combining the experimental results with density functional theory (DFT) and DFT+U calculations, our analysis reveals that the on-site Coulombic (Hubbard) and Hund's coupling energies play crucial roles in formation of the band gap about the chemical potential. We propose that at finite temperatures charge carriers are thermally excited from the Cu-As-like valence band into the conduction band, which is of Fe $3d$-like character. With increasing temperature, the number of electrons in the conduction band becomes larger and the hopping energy between Fe sites increases, and finally the long-range antiferromagnetic order is destroyed at $T > T_\mathrm{N}$. Our study provides a basis for investigating the evolution of the electronic structure of a Mott insulator transforming into a bad metallic phase, and eventually forming a superconducting state in iron-pnictidesa superconducting state in iron-pnictides.

Measuring how the magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin zone evolve in a Mott insulator as charges are introduced dramatically improved our understanding of the pseudogap, non-Fermi liquids and high $T_C$ superconductivity. Recently, photoexcitation has been used to induce similarly exotic states transiently. However, understanding how these states emerge has been limited because of a lack of available probes of magnetic correlations in the time domain, which hinders further investigation of how light can be used to control the properties of solids. Here we implement magnetic resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at a free electron laser, and directly determine the magnetization dynamics after photo-doping the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that the non-equilibrium state 2~ps after the excitation has strongly suppressed long-range magnetic order, but hosts photo-carriers that induce strong, non-thermal magnetic correlations. The magnetism recovers its two-dimensional (2D) in-plane N\'eel correlations on a timescale of a few ps, while the three-dimensional (3D) long-range magnetic order restores over a far longer, fluence-dependent timescale of a few hundred ps. We report an angle-resolved photoemission study of the charge stripe ordered La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ system. A comparative and quantitative line shape analysis is presented as the system evolves from the overdoped regime into the charge ordered phase. On the overdoped side ($x=0.20$), a normal state anti-nodal spectral gap opens upon cooling below ~ 80 K. In this process spectral weight is preserved but redistributed to larger energies. A correlation between this spectral gap and electron scattering is found. A different lineshape is observed in the antinodal region of charge ordered Nd-LSCO $x=1/8$. Significant low-energy spectral weight appears to be lost. We performed ultrafast time-resolved near-infrared pump, resonant soft X-ray diffraction probe measurements to investigate the coupling between the photoexcited electronic system and the spin cycloid magnetic order in multiferroic TbMnO3 at low temperatures. We observe melting of the long range antiferromagnetic order at low excitation fluences with a decay time constant of 22.3 +- 1.1 ps, which is much slower than the ~1 ps melting times previously observed in other systems. To explain the data we propose a simple model of the melting process where the pump laser pulse directly excites the electronic system, which then leads to an increase in the effective temperature of the spin system via a slower relaxation mechanism. Despite this apparent increase in the effective spin temperature, we do not observe changes in the wavevector q of the antiferromagnetic spin order that would typically correlate with an increase in temperature under equilibrium conditions. We suggest that this behavior results from the extremely low magnon group velocity that hinders a change in the spin-spiral wavevector on these time scales., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We employed {\it in-situ} pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to investigate the mechanism of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in NdNiO$_3$ (NNO) thin films, grown on NdGaO$_3$(110) and LaAlO$_3$(100) substrates. In the metallic phase, we observe three dimensional hole and electron Fermi surface (FS) pockets formed from strongly renormalized bands with well-defined quasiparticles. Upon cooling across the MIT in NNO/NGO sample, the quasiparticles lose coherence via a spectral weight transfer from near the Fermi level to localized states forming at higher binding energies. In the case of NNO/LAO, the bands are apparently shifted upward with an additional holelike pocket forming at the corner of the Brillouin zone. We find that the renormalization effects are strongly anisotropic and are stronger in NNO/NGO than NNO/LAO. Our study reveals that substrate-induced strain tunes the crystal field splitting, which changes the FS properties, nesting conditions, and spin-fluctuation strength, and thereby controls the MIT via the formation of an electronic order parameter with Q$_{AF}\sim$(1/4, 1/4, 1/4$\pm$$\delta$)., Comment: submitted

The interaction between phonons and high-energy excitations of electronic origin in cuprates and their role in the superconducting mechanisms is still controversial. Here we use coherent vibrational time-domain spectroscopy together with density functional and dynamical mean-field theory calculations to establish a direct link between the c-axis phonon modes and the in-plane electronic charge excitations in optimally doped YBCO. The non-equilibrium Raman tensor is measured by means of the broadband 'coherent-phonon' response in pump-probe experiments and is qualitatively described by our model using DFT in frozen phonon approximation plus single band DMFT to account for the electronic correlations. The major outcome of our experimental and theoretical study is to establish the link between out-of-plane copper ions displacements and the in-plane electronic correlations, and to estimate at few unit cells the correlation length of the associated phonon mode. Nodal angle resolved photoemission spectra taken on overdoped La$_{1.77}$Sr$_{0.23}$CuO$_4$ are presented and analyzed. It is proven that the low-energy excitations are true Landau Fermi-liquid quasiparticles. We show that momentum and energy distribution curves can be analyzed self-consistently without quantitative knowledge of the bare band dispersion. Finally, by imposing Kramers-Kronig consistency on the self-energy $\Sigma$, insight into the quasiparticle residue is gained. We conclude by comparing our results to quasiparticle properties extracted from thermodynamic, magneto-resistance, and high-field quantum oscillation experiments on overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We investigate the rotational properties of molecular hydrogen and its isotopes physisorbed on the surfaces of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride ($h$-BN), grown on Ni(111), Ru(0001), and Rh(111), using rotational excitation spectroscopy (RES) with the scanning tunneling microscope. The rotational thresholds are in good agreement with $\Delta J=2$ transitions of freely spinning para-H$_2$ and ortho-D$_2$ molecules. The line shape variations in RES for H$_2$ among the different surfaces can be traced back and naturally explained by a resonance mediated tunneling mechanism. RES data for H$_2$/$h$-BN/Rh(111) suggests a local intrinsic gating on this surface due to lateral variations in the surface potential. An RES inspection of H$_2$, HD, and D$_2$ mixtures finally points to a multi molecule excitation, since either of the three $J=0\rightarrow2$ rotational transitions are simultaneously present, irrespective of where the spectra were recorded in the mixed monolayer.

We identify dd-excitations in the quasi-one dimensional compound Ca$_2$Y$_2$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. By tuning across the Cu L$_3$-edge, we observe abrupt shifts in the dd-peak positions as a function of incident photon energy. This observation demonstrates orbital-specific coupling of the high-energy excited states of the system to the low-energy degrees of freedom. A Franck-Condon treatment of electron-lattice coupling, consistent with other measurements in this compound, reproduces these shifts, explains the Gaussian lineshapes, and highlights charge-orbital-lattice renormalization in the high energy d-manifold., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate rotational excitation spectroscopy with the scanning tunneling microscope for physisorbed hydrogen and its isotopes hydrogen-deuterid and deuterium. The observed excitation energies are very close to the gas phase values and show the expected scaling with moment of inertia. Since these energies are characteristic for the molecular nuclear spin states we are able to identify the para and ortho species of hydrogen and deuterium, respectively. We thereby demonstrate nuclear spin sensitivity with unprecedented spatial resolution.

The novel electronic properties emerging at interfaces between transition metal oxides, and in particular the discovery of conductivity in heterostructures composed of LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) band insulators, have generated new challenges and opportunities in condensed matter physics. Although the interface conductivity is stabilized when LAO matches or exceeds a critical thickness of 4 unit cells (u.c.), other phenomena such as a universal metallic state found on the bare surface of STO single crystals and persistent photon-triggered conductivity in otherwise insulating STO-based interfaces raise important questions about the role of the LAO overlayer and the possible relations between vacuum/STO and LAO/STO interfaces. Here, we study how the metallic STO surface state evolves using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in situ prepared samples complemented by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) during the growth of a crystalline LAO overlayer. In all the studied samples, the character of the conduction bands, their carrier densities, the Ti3+ crystal field, and the response to photon irradiation bear strong similarities. Nevertheless, we report here that studied LAO/STO interfaces exhibit an instability toward an apparent 2 x 1 folding of the Fermi surface at and above 4 u.c. thickness threshold, which distinguishes these heterostructures from bare STO and sub-critical-thickness LAO/STO.

We investigate the order parameter dynamics of the stripe-ordered nickelate, La$_{1.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$NiO$_4$, using time-resolved resonant X-ray diffraction. In spite of distinct spin and charge energy scales, the two order parameters' amplitude dynamics are found to be linked together due to strong coupling. Additionally, the vector nature of the spin sector introduces a longer re-orientation time scale which is absent in the charge sector. These findings demonstrate that the correlation linking the symmetry-broken states does not unbind during the non-equilibrium process, and the time scales are not necessarily associated with the characteristic energy scales of individual degrees of freedom., Comment: 4 figures. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the recently-discovered surface state on SrTiO$_{3}$ consists of non-degenerate $t_{2g}$ states with different dimensional characters. While the $d_{xy}$ bands have quasi-2D dispersions with weak $k_{z}$ dependence, the lifted $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ bands show 3D dispersions that differ significantly from bulk expectations and signal that electrons associated with those orbitals permeate the near-surface region. Like their more 2D counterparts, the size and character of the $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ Fermi surface components are essentially the same for different sample preparations. Irradiating SrTiO$_{3}$ in ultrahigh vacuum is one method observed so far to induce the "universal" surface metallic state. We reveal that during this process, changes in the oxygen valence band spectral weight that coincide with the emergence of surface conductivity are disproportionate to any change in the total intensity of the O $1s$ core level spectrum. This signifies that the formation of the metallic surface goes beyond a straightforward chemical doping scenario and occurs in conjunction with profound changes in the initial states and/or spatial distribution of near-$E_{F}$ electrons in the surface region., Comment: Main text plus supplemental material. We investigate the bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ by temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission. We find a narrow-gap correlated insulator, with spectral features indicative of a polaronic ground state, strikingly similar to that observed previously for the parent compounds of the cuprate superconductors. We additionally observe similar behaviour for the single-layer cousin Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, indicating that strong electron-boson coupling dominates the low-energy excitations of this exotic family of materials, and providing a microscopic link between the insulating ground states of the seemingly-disparate 3d cuprates and 5d iridates., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. High resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering has been performed to reveal the role of lattice-coupling in a family of quasi-1D insulating cuprates, Ca$_{2+5x}$Y$_{2-5x}$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$. Site-dependent low energy excitations arising from progressive emissions of a 70 meV lattice vibrational mode are resolved for the first time, providing a direct measurement of electron-lattice coupling strength. We show that such electron-lattice coupling causes doping-dependent distortions of the Cu-O-Cu bond angle, which sets the intra-chain spin exchange interactions. Motivated by the premise that superconductivity in iron-based superconductors is unconventional and mediated by spin fluctuations, an intense research effort has been focused on characterizing the spin excitation spectrum in the magnetically ordered parent phases of the Fe-pnictides2,3 and - chalcogenides4. For these undoped materials it is well-established that the spin excitation spectrum consists of a sharp, highly dispersive magnon spanning an energy range of up to 200 meV (ref. 3). The fate of these high-energy magnetic modes upon sizable doping is hitherto unresolved. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering we show that optimally doped superconducting Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 retains well defined, dispersive high-energy modes of magnetic origin. These paramagnon modes are softer than, though as intense as, the magnon of undoped antiferromagnetic BaFe2As2. The persistence of spin excitations well into the superconducting phase suggests that, if spin fluctuations are responsible for superconducting pairing, they originate from a distinctly correlated spin-state. This connects Fe-pnictide superconductors to the high-Tc cuprates, for which in spite of fundamental differences in the electronic structure, similar paramagnon modes are present5., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures

We report the observation of weak magnetism in superlattices of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 using beta-detected nuclear magnetic resonance. The spin lattice relaxation rate of 8 Li in superlattices with a spacer layers of 8 and 6 unit cells of LaAlO3 exhibits a strong peak near ~35 K, whereas no such peak is observed in a superlattice with spacer layer thickness of 3 unit cells. We attribute the observed temperature dependence to slowing down of weakly coupled electronic moments at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. These results show that the magnetism at the interface depends strongly on the thickness of the spacer layer, and that a minimal thickness of ~4-6 unit cells is required for the appearance of magnetism. A simple model is used to determine that the observed relaxation is due to small fluctuating moments (~0.002 muB) in the two samples with a larger LaAlO3 spacer thickness., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Atomically controlled crystal growth of thin films has established foundations of nanotechnology aimed at the development of advanced functional devices. Crystallization under non-equilibrium conditions allows engineering of new materials with their atomically-flat interfaces in the heterostructures exhibiting novel physical properties. From a fundamental point of view, knowledge of the electronic structures of thin films and their interfaces is indispensable to understand the origins of their functionality which further evolves into realistic device application. In view of extreme surface sensitivity of the conventional vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), with a probing depth of several angstroms, experiments on thin films have to use sophisticated in-situ sample transfer systems to avoid surface contamination. In this Letter, we put forward a method to circumvent these difficulties using soft X-ray (SX) ARPES. A GaAs:Be thin film in our samples was protected by an amorphous As layer with an thickness of $\sim 1$ nm exceeding the probing depth of the VUV photoemission with photon energy $h\nu$ around 100 eV. The increase of the probing depth with increasing $h\nu$ towards the SX region has clearly exposed the bulk band dispersion without any surface treatment. Any contributions from potential interface states between the thin film and the amorphous capping layer has been below the detection limit. Our results demonstrate that SX-ARPES enables the observation of coherent three-dimensional band dispersion of buried heterostructure layers through an amorphous capping layer, breaking through the necessity of surface cleaning of thin film samples. Bismuth-chalchogenides are model examples of three-dimensional topological insulators. Their ideal bulk-truncated surface hosts a single spin-helical surface state, which is the simplest possible surface electronic structure allowed by their non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topology. They are therefore widely regarded ideal templates to realize the predicted exotic phenomena and applications of this topological surface state. However, real surfaces of such compounds, even if kept in ultra-high vacuum, rapidly develop a much more complex electronic structure whose origin and properties have proved controversial. Here, we demonstrate that a conceptually simple model, implementing a semiconductor-like band bending in a parameter-free tight-binding supercell calculation, can quantitatively explain the entire measured hierarchy of electronic states. In combination with circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments, we further uncover a rich three-dimensional spin texture of this surface electronic system, resulting from the non-trivial topology of the bulk band structure. Moreover, our study reveals how the full surface-bulk connectivity in topological insulators is modified by quantum confinement., Comment: 9 pages, including supplementary information, 4+4 figures. The dynamics of an order parameter's amplitude and phase determines the collective behaviour of novel states emerged in complex materials. Time- and momentum-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, by virtue of its ability to measure material properties at atomic and electronic time scales and create excited states not accessible by the conventional means can decouple entangled degrees of freedom by visualizing their corresponding dynamics in the time domain. Here, combining time-resolved femotosecond optical and resonant x-ray diffraction measurements on striped La1.75Sr0.25NiO4, we reveal unforeseen photo-induced phase fluctuations of the charge order parameter. Such fluctuations preserve long-range order without creating topological defects, unlike thermal phase fluctuations near the critical temperature in equilibrium10. Importantly, relaxation of the phase fluctuations are found to be an order of magnitude slower than that of the order parameter's amplitude fluctuations, and thus limit charge order recovery. This discovery of new aspect to phase fluctuation provides more holistic view for the importance of phase in ordering phenomena of quantum matter., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. We present a soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) study of the stoichiometric pnictide superconductor LaRu2P2. The observed electronic structure is in good agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. However, it is significantly different from its counterpart in high-temperature superconducting Fe-pnictides. In particular the bandwidth renormalization present in the Fe-pnictides (~2 - 3) is negligible in LaRu2P2 even though the mass enhancement is similar in both systems. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in LaRu2P2 has a different origin with respect to the iron pnictides. Finally we demonstrate that the increased probing depth of SX-ARPES, compared to the widely used ultraviolet ARPES, is essential in determining the bulk electronic structure in the experiment., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 supplemental material. As an elementary particle the electron carries spin \hbar/2 and charge e. When binding to the atomic nucleus it also acquires an angular momentum quantum number corresponding to the quantized atomic orbital it occupies (e.g., s, p or d). Even if electrons in solids form bands and delocalize from the nuclei, in Mott insulators they retain their three fundamental quantum numbers: spin, charge and orbital[1]. The hallmark of one-dimensional (1D) physics is a breaking up of the elementary electron into its separate degrees of freedom[2]. The separation of the electron into independent quasi-particles that carry either spin (spinons) or charge (holons) was first observed fifteen years ago[3]. Using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering on the 1D Mott-insulator Sr2CuO3 we now observe also the orbital degree of freedom separating. We resolve an orbiton liberating itself from spinons and propagating through the lattice as a distinct quasi-particle with a substantial dispersion of ~0.2 eV., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures

Electronic structure of crystalline materials is their fundamental characteristic which is the basis of almost all their physical and chemical properties. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is the main experimental tool to study all electronic structure aspects with resolution in k-space. However, its application to three-dimensional (3D) materials suffers from a fundamental problem of ill-defined surface-perpendicular wavevector kz. Here, we achieve sharp definition of kz to enable precise navigation in 3D k space by pushing ARPES into the soft-X-ray photon energy range. Essential to break through the notorious problem of small photoexcitation cross-section was an advanced photon flux performance of our instrumentation. We explore the electronic structure of a transition metal dichalcogenide VSe2 which develops charge density waves (CDWs) possessing exotic 3D character. We experimentally identify nesting of its 3D Fermi surface (FS) as the precursor for these CDWs. Our study demonstrates an immense potential of soft-X-ray ARPES (SX-ARPES) to resolve various aspects of 3D electronic structure.

The spin texture of the metallic two-dimensional electron system (root3 x root3)-Au/Ge(111) is revealed by fully three-dimensional spin-resolved photoemission, as well as by density functional calculations. The large hexagonal Fermi surface, generated by the Au atoms, shows a significant splitting due to spin-orbit interactions. The planar components of the spin exhibit helical character, accompanied by a strong out-of-plane spin component with alternating signs along the six Fermi surface sections. Moreover, in-plane spin rotations towards a radial direction are observed close to the hexagon corners. Such a threefold-symmetric spin pattern is not described by the conventional Rashba model. Instead, it reveals an interplay with Dresselhaus-like spin-orbit effects as a result of the crystalline anisotropies., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted at Physical Review Letters
