Urban grasslands span climates and topography in soils with variable water infiltration and drainage rates that result in occasional waterlogging stress, while data on grass species tolerance to waterlogging stress is scant. Whole plant responses to waterlogging stress among cool‐season grass species were quantified in a controlled environment. The following grasses were grown in well‐drained vs. waterlogged soil for 55 d: strong creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. rubra), slender creeping red fescue (F. rubra ssp. littoralis), Chewings fescue (F. rubra ssp. commutata), hard fescue (F. brevipila), tall fescue (F. arundinacea syn. Schedonorus arundinaceus), Kentucky bluegrasses (Poa pratensis), annual bluegrass (P. annua), rough bluegrass (P. trivialis), creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and alkaligrass (Puccinellia distans). Five cultivars of each fine fescue (Festuca spp.) taxon were included for comparison. When grown in waterlogged soil compared to well‐drained conditions, relative differences generally ranged from −3% to −26% (shoots) and −13% to −33% (roots) for creeping bentgrass, tall fescue, and Kentucky bluegrass indicating higher waterlogging stress tolerance. The relative differences ranged from −18% to −43% in shoots and −3% to −34% in roots for annual bluegrass and perennial ryegrass indicating fair performance under waterlogging stress. Fine fescues, rough bluegrass, and alkaligrass exhibited the poorest performance during waterlogging stress with plant responses ranging from −12% to −64% (shoots) and −17% to −73% (roots). Negative whole plant responses among cultivars of four fine fescue taxa were similar. The selection of grasses tolerant to waterlogging stress will be important in developing resilient landscapes. Taraxacum officinale G.H. Weber ex Wiggers (dandelion) is a common weed of cool‐season turfgrass with 2,4‐D as the most commonly used herbicide for its control. Hard water is known to antagonise 2,4‐D dimethylamine herbicide efficacy in greenhouse studies, and this antagonism is mitigated by adding the water conditioning agent ammonium sulphate (AMS) to spray mixtures. As greenhouse herbicide efficacy trials do not always provide similar control to field studies, this experiment was undertaken to determine how hard water and AMS influences 2,4‐D dimethylamine control of T. officinale in established lawns. Hard water was prepared to achieve 0, 275, 450 and 675 mg CaCO3 L−1. The 2,4‐D was applied at each hardness level with and without AMS at 20 g L−1 in eight separate field trials across three sites and two seasons. Regardless of water hardness level, 2,4‐D treatments with AMS added reduced T. officinale cover at 52 weeks after application (WAA) compared to those without AMS. Similarly, fewer T. officinale plants were recorded when adding AMS to 2,4‐D. Taraxacum officinale cover at 52 WAA was higher when applied in water with a hardness of 450 mg CaCO3 L−1 or more compared to applications in distilled water (0 mg CaCO3 L−1). When hard water antagonism occurred, the addition of AMS to the spray mixture reduced the antagonism. Based on this field experiment and consistent with greenhouse experiments, applicators should mix AMS at 20 g L−1 when applying 2,4‐D dimethylamine, especially in hard water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increasing costs and decreasing numbers of university Extension faculty have made it difficult to provide quality turfgrass short course education. In response, faculty from nine institutions collaborated to develop the Great Lakes School of Turfgrass Science. This 12-week online course provides students with unique learning experiences through a combination of assigned readings, quizzes, lectures, and live instructor discussion. Student attendance increased and costs decreased relative to traditional in-person short courses. Additionally, student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. These results demonstrate that online courses such as this can provide an effective and flexible source of knowledge that meets the busy schedules of students and instructors.

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cultivars are diverse in their phenotype with a common classification system used to describe their growth habit but it is unclear why their growth differs. Growth analysis measurements have been used to explain growth rate differences among grass species and cultivars. The objective of this experiment was to study the growth of six commercially available Kentucky bluegrass cultivars from different growth habit classifications using classical growth analysis. Kentucky bluegrass seed was germinated and transplanted into cone‐tainers and transferred to a growth chamber maintained at 25/15°C (day/night) and a 12‐h photoperiod. Thirty plants per cultivar were used with six whole plants of each cultivar harvested 8 weeks after transplanting and once per week for the next 4 weeks for a total of five harvests. Barvette HGT produced the largest plants, and Moonlight SLT produced the smallest plants by the end of the experiment, although the relative growth rate and absolute growth rate did not vary between the cultivars. Results from the growth analysis revealed that Moonlight SLT had the highest leaf area ratio (89.4 cm2 g−1), specific leaf area (200.1 cm2 g−1), and rhizome weight ratio (0.101 g g−1), but the lowest stem weight ratio (0.120 g g−1) and root weight ratio (0.338 g g−1). Final plant weights and leaf area measurements were closely aligned with Kentucky bluegrass classification information. Unfortunately, classical growth analysis provided little insight into why some cultivars possess more aggressive growth characteristics or compact growth habits. A weed garden was constructed to quantify and improve identification skills among clientele. The garden was planted with over 100 weed species based on surveys on problematic weeds. The weed garden proved useful for introducing additional hands-on learning activities into traditional lecture-based seminars. Through seminar and field day attendee feedback, data were gathered on weeds commonly misidentified. The data reflected the need to continue focusing education efforts on weed identification and to increase training on weeds commonly misidentified. Through continued use of the weed garden, Extension specialists can enhance clientele identification skills and aid in developing effective weed management strategies.

It is important that Extension education programs be directed at clientele new to the turfgrass industry. A 1-day Basic Training: Turf Management seminar was created in 2006 to provide education to those new to the turfgrass industry. The seminar covered the basics of turfgrass management including growth, physiology, fertilization, cultural practices, and pest management. Education was provided to 537 clientele with this program during its first 4 years, indicating the popularity of this 1-day training module. Ninety-five percent of attendees indicated that they felt better equipped to do their job after attending the seminar. (Contains 4 tables and 1 figure.)
