Maximal ground-state deformation should occur when both proton and neutron Fermi surfaces are located at midshell. However, subshell gaps that stabilize large deformation can exist at proton or neutron values other than midshell. One such gap may occur at Z=60 in the rare-earth region, as the energy of the first 2+ states in even-even nuclei are often lowest in an isotonic chain for neodymium (Z=60) rather than the midshell isotopes of dysprosium (Z=66). Further evidence of this deformed gap has now been observed by investigating the signature splitting systematics of the νi13/2 bands found in the odd-N, rare-earth nuclei. These were aided by the present observation of the νi13/2 band in Gd159 and the confirmation of the same structure in Sm155 via the transfer of a neutron from a Gd160 beam to a Sm154 target.

A Gd160 beam was accelerated to an energy of 1000 MeV and, separately, bombarded thick targets of Sm154 and Dy164 in order to observe neutron-rich, rare-earth nuclei via deep-inelastic collision processes. Gammasphere was utilized to observe ?-ray emissions. Many new states and transitions were observed in Gd160 as a result of so-called unsafe Coulomb excitation. The ground-state band in Gd160 has been extended to Ip=20+ and a rotational band based on the Kp=4+ state, previously associated with a hexadecapole vibration, was observed up to 18+. The quasiparticle configuration of the Kp=4+ band has been determined, and its unusual alignment behavior may result from a possible quenching of static neutron pairing. In addition, the band based on the [523]5/2 quasineutron orbital in Gd161 was extended from 11/2- to 33/2- and also displays the same unusual alignment behavior.

International audience; Excited states in the extremely neutron-deficient nucleus Te107 have been identified from two separate experiments using the recoil-decay tagging technique. Two connected structures were observed on the basis of γγ-coincidence relations and tentatively assigned as built on the mixed-parentage νg7/2d5/2 and νh11/2 intruder configurations. The observed structures were compared with large-scale shell-model calculations and total Routhian surface calculations. Collective behavior was discovered to persist in the νh11/2 band of Te107 which highlights the shape-polarizing effect of a single valence neutron occupying the h11/2 intruder orbit as the N=50 shell closure is approached.

Excited states in the neutron-deficient nuclides W8874162 and W9074164 were investigated by using the ?-ray spectrometer Jurogam. A change in structure is apparent from the first rotational alignments in W162 and W164, whose rotationally aligned bands are interpreted as ?(h9/2)2 and ?(i13/2)2 configurations, respectively. The level schemes have been extended using recoil (-decay) correlations with the observation of excited collective structures. Configuration assignments have been made on the basis of comparisons of the deduced aligned angular momentum, as a function of rotational frequency, with the predictions of the cranked shell model. © 2016 American Physical Society.

SYNOPSIS An account is given of the structure and possible function of the hair-pencil scent dispersal mechanisms found in the tibiaria-group of species of Striglina and a new species is described in the group. Notes on the possible evolution of the mechanism are included.

Excited states in the N=88 nucleus Tb153 were observed up to spin ∼40 in an experiment utilizing the Gammasphere array. The Tb153 states were populated in a weak α4n evaporation channel of the Cl37 + Sn124 reaction. Two previously known sequences were extended to higher spins, and a new decoupled structure was identified. The πh11/2 band was observed in the spin region where other N=88 isotopes exhibit effects of prolate to oblate shape changes leading to band termination along the yrast line, whereas Tb153 displays a persistent collective behavior. However, minor perturbations of the very highest state in both signatures of this h11/2 band are observed, which perhaps signal the start of the transition towards band termination.

The Sn124(Cl37,6nγ) fusion-evaporation reaction at a bombarding energy of 180 MeV has been used to significantly extend the excitation level scheme of 67155Ho88. The collective rotational behavior of this nucleus breaks down above spin I∼30 and a fully aligned noncollective (band terminating) state has been identified at Iπ=79/2-. Comparison with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations also provides evidence for core-excited noncollective states at Iπ=87/2- and (89/2+) involving particle-hole excitations across the Z=64 shell gap. A similar core-excited state in 68156Er88 at Iπ=(46+) is also presented.

Excited states have been studied in the deformed proton emitter 113Cs. Gamma-ray transitions have been unambiguously assigned to 113Cs by correlation with its characteristic proton decay, using the method of recoil-decay tagging. Two previously identified rotational bands have been observed and extended to tentative spins of 45/2 and 51/2 h¯, with excitation energies over 8 MeV above the lowest state. These are the highest angular momenta and excitation energies observed to date in any nucleus beyond the proton drip-line. Transitions in the bands have been rearranged compared to previous work. A study of aligned angular momenta, in comparison to the predictions of Woods–Saxon cranking calculations, is consistent with the most intense band being based on the π g7/2[422]3/2+ configuration, which would contradict the earlier πh11/2 assignment, and with the second band being based on the πd5/2[420]1/2+ configuration. The data suggest that the band based upon the πh11/2 configuration is not observed. peerReviewed

A significant extension of the level scheme for the odd-odd nucleus Re172 was accomplished through the use of the Gammasphere spectrometer. States up to a tentative spin assignment of 39 were observed and two new structures were identified. Configuration assignments are proposed based on alignment properties and observed band crossings.

Four high-spin collective bands have been populated in 68154Er86 via the 110Pd(48Ti,4nγ)154Er reaction. Average transition quadrupole moments Qt have been measured for three of the bands by using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The strongest band has a value of Q t=11.0±1.0eb, similar to values found recently for four triaxial strongly deformed (TSD) bands in 157,158Er. The second band has a value of Qt=19.5±3.2eb, consistent with a predicted axially symmetric superdeformed (SD) shape, similar in deformation to the 152Dy isotone, and is used as a calibration point. The third, new band has a value of Qt=9.9±2.2eb. The results confirm the unexpectedly large Qt moments for the favored TSD bands in light erbium isotopes.

The phenomenon of wobbling can only occur for a nuclear shape with stable triaxial deformation. To date, only a few examples of this exotic collective mode have been observed in lutetium and tantalum isotopes. A search for a wobbling sequence was performed in 171Re to determine if this feature can be observed in Z>73 nuclei. No evidence was found for wobbling; however, an interaction between the πi13/2 sequence and another positive-parity band may give an indication on why wobbling may not occur in this nucleus. The level scheme for 171Re was significantly extended and interpretations for the decay sequences are proposed within the context of the cranked shell model.

Excited states have been identified in the very neutron-deficient Z=58 nucleus 123Ce. This is the most neutron-deficient odd-A cerium isotope in which excited states have been identified. The states have been unambiguously assigned to 123Ce by detecting de-excitation γ rays in coincidence with evaporated charged particles and neutrons. Three rotational bands, each consisting of at least eight E2 transitions, have been observed. The bands have tentatively been assigned to be based on neutrons in g7/2 and h11/2 orbitals. Two of the bands have been assigned to be signature partners, although no interband transitions have been observed. The aligned angular momenta of the bands have been studied in comparison with neighboring nuclei and with the results of Woods-Saxon cranking calculations. Observation of the deformation-dependent π(h11/2)2 quasiparticle alignment at 0.36MeV/ in each of the bands suggests a quadrupole deformation of β2 0.3, in good agreement with theoretical predictions for the suggested possible configuration assignments.
