The author defines Bion's use of "O" and "K" and discusses both from the radical nondualist realizational perspective available through the lens of Eihei Dogen's (1200-1253) Soto Zen Buddhist orientation. Fundamental differences in core foundational principles are discussed as well as similarities and their relevance to clinical practice. A case example exemplifies and explicates the abstract aspects of the discussion, which draws from Zen teaching stories, reference to Dogen's original writings, and the scholarly commentarial literature as well as from contemporary writers who integrate Zen Buddhist study and practice with Bion's psychoanalytic writings on theory and technique.

The author reviews the literature on the relation between Buddhist meditation and psychoanalytic listening and argues that the influence of the dynamic unconscious is not addressed in this literature, which engenders a pragmatic overvaluation of attention and an accompanying unexamined devaluation of the analyst's experiences of inattention. The article emphasizes contemporary psychoanalytic theories that are consistent with basic Buddhist principles and their influences on recommendations for psychoanalytic listening. The author also examines the role of intention as a guiding principle in psychoanalytic listening by elaborating the issues at hand in terms of both Zen Buddhist and contemporary psychoanalytic conceptualizations of various fluctuating mind states, such as reverie.

The water well embodies a multifaceted and powerful mythology. This discussion touches on a few variations from world spiritual traditions as they interact with conceptualizations derived from psychoanalytic experience. In ancient China whole cities would be relocated, reoriented, rebuilt, or redesigned, but, wells remained immovable and unchanged in design, form, and location. They came to represent a symbol of constancy and life. The Taoist I-ching, or Book of Changes, asserts: “The well from which water is drawn conveys the further idea of an inexhaustible dispensing of nourishment” (Baynes, 1992, p. 185). In Christian traditions the water from the baptismal font both cleanses away the stain of original sin and unlocks the gateway to spiritual life. The well forms the center of a concentric circle and functions as a place of meeting, a place where life happens and things change. Deals are made, marriages arranged, and gossip exchanged at the well. Taverns function as contemporary wells, “watering holes” that intoxicate.

The author provides a personal and experiential account of Zen Buddhism and psychoanalysis. The notion of oscillations serves as an organizing structure. Drawing from the British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion and the American Zen teacher Robert Aitken, the notion of suffering, meaning here to permit, is considered as the central motivating force and organizing principle for both disciplines. As a critique of traditional psychoanalytic writing an “experiment in dialogue” is offered that draws from a variety of writing styles including prose, poetry, free-association, stream of consciousness, traditional teaching stories and case material to discuss various experiential states such as linearity, circularity, resistance, ambivalence, passion, rage and the potential for a mutually supportive dynamic between Zen and psychoanalysis.

PERVASIVE OBJECT TRANSFERENCE Kleinian formulations posit both “good” and “bad” primitive mother representations. Through projective/introjective cycles, the individual ideally integrates both sets of representations into a more stable and cohesive object world accompanied by a more or less stable “I-sense” (Cooper, 1998) with both “good” and “bad” aspects. Klein (1935) asserts that bad objects derive from the subject’s murderous impulses that are projected into the mother. She writes: “But it is because the baby projects its own aggression on to these objects that it feels them to be ‘bad’ and not only in that they frustrate its desires: the child conceives of them as actually dangerous—persecutors who it fears will devour, scoop out the inside of its body, cut it to pieces, poison it—in short, compassing its destruction by all the means which sadism can devise” (p. 262). Thus, for Klein, these images become gross “distortions” of the actual object that come to populate the subject’s internal and external worlds. According to Klein, these distortions derive from the infant’s primitive projective processes. Klein (1935) describes these early cycles as “momentous” (p. 267) in that they exert a significant impact on the internalization and integration of one’s psychic structure. Klein implicates “restrictions” in the projective/introjective processes with “the most severe psychosis.” This underscores the importance of projective/introjective processes in normal development. Although not negating this crucial aspect of projection in the development of the infant’s internal object world, this view fails to take account of the actuality of the mother’s projection of her own bad

This paper examines the experiential dimensions of wonder and doubt as one way to articulate the creative and growth-promoting tensions between the medical/scientific model and the spiritual/mystical model. Both forms of experience, it is argued, function as necessary elements in a psychotherapy that integrates psychoanalysis and spiritual praxes. Fundamental differences between the medical/scientific model and the spiritual/mystical models are examined. The notion of the gap serves to illustrate these diametrically opposed, albeit compatible and necessary, points of view. The multifaceted layers of movement between Buddhism and psychoanalysis typify interacting dynamics between the two disciplines and provide a focal point for discussion. The paper then explores parallels between the Zen Buddhist notion of “Satori” as explicated in the writings of D. T. Suzuki and Wilfred Bion's notion of “O.” Theoretical aspects of the discussion provide a backdrop for exploring clinical experience regarding the relationship between acceptance and change, the clinical relevance of the Buddhist notions of “gaining idea” and “basic goodness.” The author also explores relationships between presence as actuality and ideal; knowing and not knowing; wonder and doubt. Clinical material supports the theoretical aspects of the discussion.

The author integrates Zen Buddhist and psychoanalytic principles to introduce the notion of “spontaneously arising intuitive models.” On the basis of the Zen teaching stories and patient dreams, this paper explores the meanings and psychic functions such intuitive models serve for patients. The notion of “the gap” constitutes a central organizing theme, which is elaborated in relation to Wilfred Bion’s notion of “O.” The discussion addresses issues relating to the uses and misuses of diagnosis and explores clinical implications. An extended case study exemplifies and supports the abstract concepts under discussion.

The author discusses various relationships derived from the image of gap, precipice, and abyss with specific emphasis on interacting dynamics between being and knowing as explicated in the Zen Buddhist teachings of Hui-neng and in the psychoanalytic writings of Wilfred Bion. While of significant value to psychoanalysis, it is argued that symbolic meanings can occlude the actuality of the analysand's or of the spiritual seeker's affective experiencing, particularly concerning the human tendency to concretize experiential states engendered through meditation and/or the psychoanalytic encounter. The author draws from Matte-Blanco's explication of symmetrical and asymmetrical perceptual modalities to discuss the fluid nature of spiritual experiencing, paradoxical coexistence of ultimate and relative realities and reciprocal dynamics and identities between states of experiencing that might otherwise appear opposed. The primacy of experiencing for both disciplines, particularly concerning the experiencing subject's momentary state of consciousness, forms a central theme for both Zen and psychoanalysis. Brief clinical vignettes support and illuminate the author's points.

Drawing from the work of Melanie Klein and Wilfred Bion, this article explores projective and introjective dynamics in terms of Buddhist meditative methods and practice. Forms of meditations, such shamatha or calm-abiding, and vipashayana or analytic meditation, are linked to psychoanalytic dynamics in clinical terms. The interface between Buddhist meditation and psychoanalytic experience is explored with case material.

Attention to unconscious processes forms the nexus of the psychoanalytic endeavor and adds dimension to the theoretical and clinical integration of Buddhism and psychoanalysis. The author traces convergences between Freud's, Matte-Blanco's, and D.T. Suzuki's explication of the psychoanalytic and Zen readings of the unconscious. The Buddhist understanding of the unconscious propensity to reify experience can be integrated with psychoanalytic thinking. An alternative understanding and processing of aggression with supporting clinical material provides a case in point. The author concludes that continued Buddhist practice holds the potential to alter radically existing psychoanalytic models without destroying the efficacy of well-established formulations and accompanying techniques.

The author uses and extends Wilfred Bion's concepts of “invariance” and “transformation” to discuss the integration of Buddhism and psychoanalysis. Observable descriptive similarities between Buddhism and psychoanalysis, according to the author, function as artifacts that can overlay and obscure the primary subjective and experiential nature that the two disciplines have in common. The author discusses the nonpathological nature of unitive experiences and argues that over-emphasis on technical similarities can function as a resistance to deepening unitive experiences with patients. The terms “sense,” “non-sense,” and “no-sense” function as neutral words with which to discuss basic ineffable and unknowable experiences that both systems can access. The author comments on the concepts of faith and spirit in relation to both disciplines. The integration of Buddhism and psychoanalysis, for individuals who practice both disciplines, according to the author, is primarily an internal process. An unrelenting search for lived truths forms the basis of this process.

This paper integrates Zen and psychoanalytic concepts; introduces the Zen concept of total exertion; elaborates the profound implications that the notion of total exertion has for the psychoanalytic encounter and the psychotherapist's capacity for maintaining an optimal attentional stance; addresses anxiety-driven interferences to both the psychoanalytic process and deepened Zen practice. Clinical vignettes, personal experiences, poetry and psychoanalytic theory serve to demonstrate the abstract aspects of the discussion.
