The current study examined early grammatical marking in a relatively understudied language, Mandarin, by using the Mandarin version of MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory. Two waves of data collection included 338 monolingual children (17-36 months; 143 female) at Time 1 and 308 children (32-55 months; 139 female) at Time 2 and their caregivers, whose education ranged from third grade (elementary school) or below to postgraduate with a median of high school. Our data showed a clear order of grammatical marking acquisition among these children and supported findings on the linguistic specificity of morphological development such that early- and late-acquired markers in Mandarin are not acquired in the same order as English or other languages. Negative "mei2," "bu4," possessive "-de," classifiers, and the aspect marker "le" were the earliest-acquired markers, followed by modals, negative "bie2," adverbs, sentence final particles, resultative verb compounds, and aspect markers "guo4" and "yao4." Complex clauses and the aspect marker "zheng4" were acquired the latest. Furthermore, consistent with previous cross-linguistic studies, the development patterns of a wide range of Mandarin grammatical markers indicate that markers that are more perceptually salient and obligatory, have clear form-meaning mappings, and often appear in isolation or utterance-final position were acquired earlier than others. This study assessed the effectiveness and predictability of a readily available protocol for the treatment of peri-implantitis using mechanical debridement, chemical antiseptic surface detoxification, and osseous grafting. Nine patients (seven female and two male, mean age: 56.5 years) with a total of 15 peri-implantitis-affected implants were selected for the trial. Pocket probing depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and standardized digital periapical radiographs measurements were taken. Surgical flaps were elevated, and the implant threads were cleaned with a plastic curette. Chemical decontamination was performed by scrubbing solutions of 0.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and 1.5% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) around the exposed implant using cotton pellets. Bone defects were filled with a 50/50 mixture of bovine hydroxyapatite and nanocrystalline calcium sulfate (CaSO4). A porcine collagen membrane was placed over the grafted bone defect. Follow-up appointments were scheduled for 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 1 year posttreatment. Clinical and radiographic parameters were assessed and compared. At baseline, PPD varied from 5 mm to 7.5 mm, with a mean PPD of 6 mm (± .7 mm). At the 12-month follow-up, PPD varied from 1.5 mm to 4.2 mm, with a mean PPD of 2.5 mm (± .8 mm). The mean PPD reduction of 3.6 mm (59.2%) was statistically significant (P.001). The number of bleeding sites around each test implant decreased significantly from 4 to 0.4 sites between baseline and 12 months (P.001). The mean radiographic bone loss decreased from 4.8 mm (± 1.3 mm) to 2.7 mm (± 1.2 mm; P.001). The proposed method of mechanical decontamination, chemical detoxification, and bone regeneration is clinically effective and reproducible. Clinical peri-implant parameters, as well as radiographic bone levels, were improved and maintained their stability for 1 year using this peri-implantitis treatment protocol.

Prader–Willi syndrome is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder with an early phenotype characterized by neonatal hypotonia, failure to thrive, and immature genitalia. The onset of hyperphagia in childhood and developmental, physical and neuropsychiatric characteristics indicate atypical brain development and specifically hypothalamic dysfunction. Whether the latter is a consequence of disruption of hypothalamic pathways for genetic reasons or due to a failure of hypothalamic development remains uncertain. Twenty participants with Prader–Willi syndrome, 40 age-matched controls and 42 obese participants underwent structural MRI scanning. Health warning labels (HWLs) show promise in reducing motivation towards energy-dense snack foods. Understanding the underlying mechanisms could optimise their effectiveness. In two experimental studies in general population samples (Study 1 n=90; Study 2 n=1382), we compared the effects of HWLs and irrelevant aversive labels (IALs) on implicit (approach) motivation towards unhealthy snacks, using an approach-avoidance task (Study 1), and a manikin task (Study 2). We also assessed explicit motivation towards unhealthy snacks using food selection tasks. We examined whether labelling effects on motivation arose from the creation of outcome-dependent associations between the food and its health consequences or from simple, non-specific aversive associations. Both label types reduced motivation towards snack foods but only when the label was physically present. HWLs and IALs showed similar effects on implicit motivation, although HWLs reduced explicit motivation more than IALs. Thus, aversive HWLs appear to act both through low level associative mechanisms affecting implicit motivation, and by additionally emphasizing explicit causal links to health outcomes thereby affecting explicitly motivated choice behaviours.

To evaluate the reduction in the salivary viral load using oral antiseptic mouthwashes in patients testing positive for COVID-19.Sixty-three individuals were recruited after testing positive for COVID-19 by real-time RT-PCR assay and divided into 5 groups. Group 1 received sterile water, group 2 received 1.5% hydrogen peroxide solution (HP), group 3 received 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX), group 4 received 0.1% sodium hypochlorite solution (NaClO), and group 5 received sequential rinses using CHX and HP. After collecting the initial saliva sample, individuals were asked to use the designated mouthwash for 1 min. Additional saliva samples were collected immediately after rinsing, 15, and 30 min after rinsing. Real-time RT-PCR assays for RNA detection of SARS-CoV-2 were performed on the saliva samples.There were no significant differences among the experimental groups and the control group in any period. Compared to the baseline values, there was a significant reduction in the number of copies of SARS-CoV-2 after 30 min in group 2 and immediately after the initial mouthwash in group 4.No experimental group demonstrated a significant reduction in the viral load compared to the control group.

Successful treatment of peri-implantitis requires decontamination of implant surfaces exposed to biofilms and byproducts of tissue inflammation. In this regard, dental lasers may provide a clinical benefit. While the inherent characteristics of specific laser wavelengths may damage titanium implant surfaces, in vitro and animal studies have shown that damage to the target surface can be avoided with the selection of appropriate laser parameters. In this in situ human study, five hopeless implants were irradiated, each by one of the following lasers: Nd:YAG (1,064 nm), Er,Cr:YSGG (2,780 nm), Er:YAG (2,940 nm), CO2 (9,300 nm), and CO2 (10,600 nm) at their recommended settings. All implants were then removed and examined under scanning electron microscopy for the presence of residual bacteria and to assess the extent of damage to the implant surface. An additional implant (implant no. six) was irradiated and evaluated by the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate test for the presence of residual lipopolysaccharide endotoxin. The results showed that while there were localized areas of heat-related damage to an implant surface following laser irradiation, residual bacteria were rarely noted. Additionally, the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate test indicated a nearly complete removal of endotoxin. With the use of appropriate settings, all current dental lasers can be utilized for implant surface decontamination in a human.

Background and Aims The extent to which genome size and chromosome numbers evolve in concert is little understood, particularly after polyploidy (whole-genome duplication), when a genome returns to a diploid-like condition (diploidization). We study this phenomenon in 46 species of allotetraploid Nicotiana section Suaveolentes (Solanaceae), which formed Methods We analysed newly assessed genome sizes and chromosome numbers within the context of a restriction site-associated nuclear DNA (RADseq) phylogenetic framework. Key Results RADseq generated a well-supported phylogenetic tree, in which multiple accessions from each species formed unique genetic clusters. Chromosome numbers and genome sizes vary from n = 2x = 15 to 24 and 2.7 to 5.8 pg/1C nucleus, respectively. Decreases in both genome size and chromosome number occur, although neither consistently nor in parallel. Species with the lowest chromosome numbers (n = 15–18) do not possess the smallest genome sizes and, although N. heterantha has retained the ancestral chromosome complement, n = 2x = 24, it nonetheless has the smallest genome size, even smaller than that of the modern representatives of ancestral diploids. Conclusions The results indicate that decreases in genome size and chromosome number occur in parallel down to a chromosome number threshold, n = 20, below which genome size increases, a phenomenon potentially explained by decreasing rates of recombination over fewer chromosomes. We hypothesize that, more generally in plants, major decreases in genome size post-polyploidization take place while chromosome numbers are still high because in these stages elimination of retrotransposons and other repetitive elements is more efficient. Once such major genome size change has been accomplished, then dysploid chromosome reductions take place to reorganize these smaller genomes, producing species with small genomes and low chromosome numbers such as those observed in many annual angiosperms, including Arabidopsis.

Arising from the 2019 Darwin College Lectures, this book presents essays from seven prominent public intellectuals on the theme of vision. Fear and anxiety are largely seen as separate entities, a distinction that inspires and shapes basic and clinical research. Evidence for this distinction has a rich translational base and comes from physiological, behavioural and neurobiological studies. But there is a high degree of inconsistency and a number of fundamental limitations that lead us to question the validity of the distinction. We consider relevant research and examine the underlying assumptions, concluding that, though the distinction has been influential and useful, future progress requires that we recognise it as an over-simplification.

The purpose of this study was to conduct an in vitro evaluation of the efficacy of six dental lasers, two ultrasonic scalers, and a titanium curette in the removal of dental cement from the surface of an implant. The study used a total of 39 dental implants, representing three different surface textures. The implants were divided into 13 groups with one of each of the three surface textures in a group. A standardized amount of modified resin dental cement was applied to the implant surface. Each test instrument was used as a monotherapy. Additionally, three of the lasers were used as part of a dual therapy in conjunction with the piezo ultrasonic scaler. Laser irradiation was limited to 2 minutes. Following treatment, implants were graded visually and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the presence of unremoved cement and concomitant damage, if any, to the implant surface. The results showed that no treatment removed all residual cement from any of the three implant surfaces, although specific protocols appeared more effective than others. Implant surface damage was frequently observed, both visually and by SEM, and appeared to result from laser irradiation and the use of ultrasonic scaling instruments.

There is a need to modify the definition of attached gingiva (AG) as it applies to healthy and diseased teeth and implants. There are two parts to this new definition: Part A is when the biologic width is supracrestal (epithelial attachment and gingival fibers) and is attached to a healthy tooth or tissue-level implant, and the zone of AG is measured from the base of the sulcus to the mucogingival junction (MGJ); Part B is when the biologic width is subcrestal-as with infrabony defects on periodontally involved teeth, periodontally involved tissue-level implants, and bone-level implants placed at or below the bone crest-and the zone of AG is measured from the bone crest (not the base of the sulcus) to the MGJ. Further, what the AG is actually attached to around teeth and different types of implants, and the clinical significance of these differences, are thoroughly discussed.

This paper presents the results of a prospective study on the clinical effect of grafting the buccal gap with platform switching, following flapless tooth extraction and immediate implant placement and provisional restoration, on (1) alterations in buccolingual ridge dimension and (2) midfacial peri-implant soft tissue thickness. Fifty-six patients were placed in one of four treatment groups: (1) a non-platform-switching implant (Non-PS, n = 14); (2) a non-platform-switching implant and bone graft (BG/Non-PS, n = 14); (3) a platform-switching implant (PS, n = 15); and (4) a platform-switching implant and bone graft (BG/PS, n = 13). Buccolingual ridge dimensional change and peri-implant soft tissue thickness at 2 mm below the free gingival margin were measured. Both PS and BG/PS groups showed an increase in buccolingual dimension compared to the contralateral natural tooth site as well as peri-implant soft tissue thickness of > 2.5 mm, clinically. Platform switching was associated with significantly greater midfacial soft tissue thickness than bone grafting (mean ± standard deviation: 2.17 ± 0.04 for Non-PS and 3.55 ± 0.14 for PS). Using platform-switched implants, in conjunction with immediate implant placement and immediate provisional restoration, was associated with a significantly greater stability of ridge dimension and peri-implant soft tissue thickness than using non-platform-switched implants when measured 12 months after placement of the final restoration. Platform switching may help achieve preservation of ridge dimension and enhance the stability of peri-implant soft tissue following immediate implant placement and provisional restoration without bone grafting. Further research is required to assess the long-term outcome.

Introduction: Peri-implantitis is an inflammation of the soft and hard tissues surrounding an implant that results in the destruction of alveolar bone. Surgical flaps are usually elevated to allow for thorough debridement and disinfection of the implant surface. This frequently results in gingival recession, crown margin exposure, and a poor esthetic result. This is not desirable in the esthetic zone. In this case report, a minimally invasive flapless technique incorporating the use of curettage and antiseptics is used to successfully disinfect a contaminated dental implant to allow for soft tissue readherence and pocket reduction. Radiographic bone fill is also seen.
