The azalea lace bug (ALB), Stephanitis pyrioides (Scott) (Hemiptera: Tingidae), is a pest of azaleas and rhododendrons. The application of silicon (Si) to plants has been shown to accumulate in other plants and enhance defense to other plant pests. We evaluated whether Si applications decreased ALB infestation on rhododendron leaves and increased Si accumulation in leaves. Potted plants were treated with 4 or 8 weekly applications of calcium silicate and calcium carbonate (calcium control, Ca) via foliar or soil application. In 3 out of 4 choice studies, plants treated with calcium silicate or calcium carbonate had less frass deposition and oviposition by ALB compared to controls, but treated plants did not consistently have fewer ALB adults. Leaf damage was quantified in one study and leaves with more frass as an indicator of feeding had more visible damage. In no-choice studies, there were no differences between treatments in one study, but oviposition was greater on foliar/soil Si-treated plants than controls in another study. Since rhododendron aphids (Illinoia lambersi) appeared in the greenhouse during or after studies, we compared their colonization on previously treated rhododendrons. Infestation of new leaf rosettes or random leaves by I. lambersi was lower on plants sprayed with foliar silicon or calcium applied via soil in 2 studies. Treated rhododendrons did not accumulate extra Si or Ca in leaves compared to controls. In general, silicon or calcium application protected rhododendrons from ALB oviposition and aphid colonization in free-choice conditions, and may be part of an integrated pest management program., (Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Entomological Society of America 2024.)

Understanding insect dispersal helps us predict the spread of insect pests and their natural enemies. Dispersal can be studied by marking, releasing, and recapturing insects, known as mark-release-recapture (MRR). MRR techniques should be convenient, economical, and persistent. Currently, there are limited options for marking small parasitoids that do not impact their fitness and dispersal ability. We evaluated commercially available fluorescent markers used in forensics. These fluorophores can easily be detected by ultraviolet (UV) light, requiring minimal costs and labor to process the marked specimens. This fluorophore marking technique was evaluated with the pest Drosophila suzukii and three parasitoids: Trissolcus japonicus , Pachycrepoideus vindemiae , Ganaspis brasiliensis (= G. kimorum ). We evaluated the persistence of the marks on all the insects over time and examined the parasitoids for impacts on longevity, parasitism, locomotor activity, and flight take-off. The green fluorophore marker persisted for over 20 days on all four species. Marking generally did not consistently reduce the survival, parasitism rate, locomotor activity, or take-off of the parasitoids tested. Marked T. japonicus were recaptured in the field up to 100 m away from the release point and three weeks after release, indicating that this technique is a viable method for studying parasitoid dispersal.

Three-dimensional printing and casting materials were analyzed by prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA) to determine their suitability as human tissue surrogates for the fabrication of phantoms for medical imaging and radiation dosimetry applications. Measured elemental compositions and densities of five surrogate materials simulating soft tissue and bone were used to determine radiological properties (x-ray mass attenuation coefficient and electron stopping power). When compared with radiological properties of International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) materials, it was determined that urethane rubber and PLA plastic yielded the best match for soft tissue, while silicone rubber and urethane resin best simulated the properties of bone., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest The authors have no relevant financial or non-financial interests to disclose.

Purpose: The pO 2 threshold of an ideal PET hypoxia tracer for radiotherapy planning in cancer would match those observed in clinically and biologically relevant processes such as radioresistance and HIF1α expression. To identify such tracers, we directly compared uptake in vitro of hypoxia PET tracers ([ 18 F]FMISO, [ 64 Cu]CuATSM, and analogues [ 64 Cu]CuATS, [ 64 Cu]CuATSE, [ 64 Cu]CuCTS, [ 64 Cu]CuDTS, [ 64 Cu]CuDTSE, [ 64 Cu]CuDTSM) with levels of radioresistance and HIF1α expression in cultured cancer cells under identical hypoxic conditions ranging from extreme hypoxia to normoxia. Pimonidazole uptake was also compared as a marker of hypoxia., Methods: A custom-built hypoxia apparatus enabled all experiments to be performed under identical hypoxic conditions with constant measurement of pO 2 in media using an OxyLab pO 2 ™ probe. HCT116 human colonic carcinoma and MCF-7 human Caucasian breast adenocarcinoma cells were irradiated using a cobalt teletherapy unit. Clonogenic assays were used to assess survival. HIF1α expression was determined by western blotting, tracer uptake by gamma counting and pimonidazole binding by flow cytometry., Results: Radioresistance, pimonidazole binding and HIF1α expression increased gradually as pO 2 decreased between 25 mmHg and 0 mmHg. In contrast, all the PET hypoxia tracers showed a sharp increase in uptake only when pO 2 levels fell below 1 mmHg. Above this threshold, tracer uptake was not elevated above that in normoxic cells., Conclusion: This study highlights an important mismatch in pO 2 thresholds between these PET tracers and other markers of hypoxia: tracer uptake only occurred at oxygen levels that were well below levels that induced radioresistance, pimonidazole uptake and HIF1α expression. Although their pO 2 thresholds do not match the threshold for resistance to conventionally fractionated radiotherapy (pO 2 2.5-10 mmHg), their specificity for extreme hypoxia (pO 2 ≪ 1 mmHg) suggests these PET tracers may be of particular use to predict outcomes in stereotactic radiation therapy where these maximally resistant cells play a key role in determining the biological effect., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Objectives: To construct and evaluate a 64Cu production system that minimises the amount of costly 64Ni, radionuclidic impurities and nonradioactive metal contamination and maximises radiochemical and radionuclidic purity and molar activity; and to report analytical and quality control methods that can be used within typical PET radiochemistry production facilities to measure metal ion concentrations and radiometal molar activities., Methods: Low volume was ensured by dissolving the irradiated nickel in a low volume of hydrochloric acid (<1 mL) using the concave gold target backing as a reaction vessel in a custom-built target holder. Removal of contaminating 55Co and nonradioactive trace metals was ensured by adding an intermediate hydrochloric acid concentration step during the conventional ion-exchange elution process. The radionuclidic purity of the product was determined by half-life measurements, gamma spectroscopy and ion radiochromatography. Trace metal contamination and molar activity were determined by ion chromatography., Results and Conclusions: On a small scale, suitable for preclinical research, the process produced typically 3.2 GBq 64Cu in 2 mL solution from 9.4 ± 2.1 mg nickel-64 electroplated onto a gold target backing. The product had high molar activity (121.5 GBq/µmol), was free of trace metal contamination detectable by ion chromatography and has been used for many preclinical and clinical PET imaging applications., (Copyright © 2021 The Author(s). Intraspecific variation in plant traits is a major cause of variation in herbivore feeding and performance. Plant defensive traits change as a plant grows, such that ontogeny may account for a substantial portion of intraspecific trait variation. We tested how the ontogenic stage of an individual plant, of an individual in the context of its neighboring plants, and of a patch of plants with mixed or uniform stages affect plant-herbivore interactions. To do this, we conducted an experimental study of the interactions between Lepidium draba, a perennial brassicaceous weed, and Plutella xylostella, a common herbivore of L. draba. We found that L. draba foliar glucosinolates, secondary metabolites often implicated in defense, decreased in concentration with plant age. In single-stage patches, herbivores performed similarly on L. draba plants of different ages. Furthermore, we found no difference in the cumulative performance of herbivores reared on mixed- or even-staged patches of L. draba. However, in mixed-stage patches, the damage experienced by a focal plant depended on the stage of neighboring plants, suggesting a preference hierarchy of the herbivore among plant stages. In our study, the amount of herbivory depended on the ontogenic neighborhood in which the plant grew. However, from the herbivore's perspective, variation in plant ontogenic stage was unimportant to its success in terms of feeding rate and final weight.

Interspecific competition for limited resources can drive ecological specialization and trait expression. Organisms released from intense competition may exploit a broader range of resources, but if reunited with stronger competitors, survivorship may depend on foraging behaviors that reduce competition. We compared the host selection behavior of the parasitoid Cotesia glomerata from two North American populations that differ in their association with Cotesia rubecula, a superior competitor. Both parasitoids originate from Europe and attack the imported cabbageworm (a.k.a. small cabbage white) Pieris rapae, but C. glomerata was introduced into North America almost a century before C. rubecula. After re-association in North America, C. rubecula has displaced C. glomerata in several regions, but not in other regions. Host selection was measured in female C. glomerata from Maryland (MD) where it coexists with C. rubecula, and in conspecifics from Colorado (CO) where C. rubecula is absent. Unparasitized and C. rubecula-parasitized P. rapae hosts were used in choice tests to examine whether C. glomerata host selection behavior differed based on the population's association history with C. rubecula. We found that C. glomerata from MD had a higher likelihood of avoiding hosts parasitized by C. rubecula (and thus avoiding competition) than did wasps from CO. The ability of C. glomerata to avoid hosts parasitized by C. rubecula may facilitate coexistence in MD; whereas, the lack of discrimination in CO populations of C. glomerata naïve to C. rubecula could contribute to the displacement of C. glomerata were C. rubecula to enter the same habitat.

Commercial glassy carbon plates being used as absolute intensity calibration standards in small-angle X-ray scattering applications (NIST SRM 3600) have been characterized in several recent publications. This contribution adds to the characterization by measuring the hydrogen content of a plate to be (4.8 ± 0.2) × 10 -4 (mol H)/(mol C), and by measuring the vibrational spectrum by neutron inelastic scattering. The spectrum bears a strong resemblance to published measurements on graphite, allowing the identification of several spectral features. The measured spectrum is used to calculate the heat capacity of low-hydrogen-content glassy carbon for comparison with measurements reported here from 20 to 295 K.

A Standard Reference Material (SRM) of seaweed, SRM 3232 Kelp Powder (Thallus laminariae) has been developed to support food and dietary supplement measurements in compliance with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). The material was characterized for nutritional minerals, arsenic species, isomers of vitamin K 1 , proximates, and toxic elements. Kelp is a rich source of vitamins and minerals, and it is an excellent source of dietary iodine. Kelp also contains a large amount of arsenic, which is toxic as inorganic species but much less so as organic species. To capture the dietary profile of kelp, certified values were issued for As, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, I, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Pb, and Zn. Reference values for proximates were assigned. For the first time, a certified value for iodine, reference values for isomers of vitamin K 1 , and reference values for arsenic species including arsenosugars were assigned in a seaweed. SRM 3232 fills a gap in Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) needed for quality assurance and method validation in the compositional measurements of kelp and similar seaweeds used as food and as dietary supplements. Perovskite potassium sodium niobates, K 1-x Na x NbO 3 , are promising lead-free piezoelectrics. Their dielectric and piezoelectric characteristics peak near x = 0.5, but the reasons for such property enhancement remain unclear. We addressed this uncertainty by analyzing changes in the local and average structures across the x = 0.5 composition, which have been determined using simultaneous Reverse Monte Carlo fitting of neutron and X-ray total-scattering data, potassium EXAFS, and diffuse-scattering patterns in electron diffraction. Within the A-sites, Na cations are found to be strongly off-centered along the polar axis as a result of oversized cube-octahedral cages determined by the larger K ions. These Na displacements promote off-centering of the neighboring Nb ions, so that the Curie temperature and spontaneous polarization remain largely unchanged with increasing x, despite the shrinking octahedral volumes. The enhancement of the properties near x = 0.5 is attributed to an abrupt increase in the magnitude and probability of the short-range ordered octahedral rotations, which resembles the pre-transition behavior. These rotations reduce the bond tension around Na and effectively soften the short Na-O bond along the polar axis - an effect that is proposed to facilitate reorientation of the polarization as external electric field is applied.

A combination of cold neutron prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (CNPGAA) and thermal neutron (TN) PGAA was used to determine sulfur in fuel oils to develop a method to provide values for certification. CNPGAA was used to measure S/H mass ratios, and TNPGAA to measure hydrogen mass fractions. Measurements were combined to determine sulfur mass fractions (with expanded uncertainties) of 2.159 % ± 0.072 % for SRM 1622e, 0.7066 % ± 0.0120 % for SRM 1619b, and 0.1266 % ± 0.0030 % for SRM 1617b, in agreement with certified values. The results validate the method as suitable for certification of sulfur at mass fractions ≥ 0.1 %.

Background: Accurate quantification in molecular imaging is essential to improve the assessment of novel drugs and compare the radiobiological effects of therapeutic agents prior to in-human studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the challenges and feasibility of pre-clinical quantitative imaging and mouse-specific dosimetry of 111 In-labelled radiotracers. Attenuation, scatter and partial volume effects were studied using phantom experiments, and an activity calibration curve was obtained for varying sphere sizes. Six SK-OV-3-tumour bearing mice were injected with 111 In-labelled HER2-targeting monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) (range 5.58-8.52 MBq). Sequential SPECT imaging up to 197 h post-injection was performed using the Albira SPECT/PET/CT pre-clinical scanner. Mice were culled for quantitative analysis of biodistribution studies. The tumour activity, mass and percentage of injected activity per gram of tissue (%IA/g) were calculated at the final scan time point and compared to the values determined from the biodistribution data. Delivered 111 In-labelled mAbs tumour absorbed doses were calculated using mouse-specific convolution dosimetry, and absorbed doses for 90 Y-labelled mAbs were extrapolated under the assumptions of equivalent injected activities, biological half-lives and uptake distributions as for 111 In., Results: For the sphere sizes investigated (volume 0.03-1.17 ml), the calibration factor varied by a factor of 3.7, whilst for the range of tumour masses in the mice (41-232 mg), the calibration factor changed by a factor of 2.5. Comparisons between the mice imaging and the biodistribution results showed a statistically significant correlation for the tumour activity (r = 0.999, P < 0.0001) and the tumour mass calculations (r = 0.977, P = 0.0008), whilst no correlation was found for the %IA/g (r = 0.521, P = 0.29). Median tumour-absorbed doses per injected activity of 52 cGy/MBq (range 36-69 cGy/MBq) and 649 cGy/MBq (range 441-950 cGy/MBq) were delivered by 111 In-labelled mAbs and extrapolated for 90 Y-labelled mAbs, respectively., Conclusions: This study demonstrates the need for multidisciplinary efforts to standardise imaging and dosimetry protocols in pre-clinical imaging. Accurate image quantification can improve the calculation of the activity, %IA/g and absorbed dose. Diagnostic imaging could be used to estimate the injected activities required for therapeutic studies, potentially reducing the number of animals used.

Instrumental neutron activation analysis with both relative and k0 standardization was used in four experienced laboratories to determine element mass fractions in single-wall carbon nanotube certified reference material (CRM) SWCNT-1. Results obtained were evaluated using the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) "Type B On Bias" approach and yielded consensus values in agreement with National Research Council Canada (NRCC) certified values for Fe, Co, Ni, and Mo and provided mass fraction values for 13 additional elements, namely, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Br, La, W, and Au. In addition, prompt γ neutron activation analysis was employed to determine mass fractions of H, B, Co, Ni, and Mo. Results of this work provide a basis for the establishment of reference values of element mass fractions in CRM SWCNT-1, thus expanding its usability for more accurate characterization and benchmarking of similar nanotechnology materials.

A newly developed procedure for determination of arsenic by radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA) was used to measure arsenic at four levels in SRM 955c Toxic Elements in Caprine Blood and at two levels in SRM 2668 Toxic Elements in Frozen Human Urine for the purpose of providing mass concentration values for certification. Samples were freeze-dried prior to analysis followed by neutron irradiation for 3 h at a fluence rate of 1×10 14 cm -2 s -1 . After sample dissolution in perchloric and nitric acids, arsenic was separated from the matrix by extraction into zinc diethyldithiocarbamate in chloroform, and 76 As quantified by gamma-ray spectroscopy. Differences in chemical yield and counting geometry between samples and standards were monitored by measuring the count rate of a 77 As tracer added before sample dissolution. RNAA results were combined with inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) values from NIST and collaborating laboratories to provide certified values of (10.81 ± 0.54) μg/kg and (213.1 ± 0.73) μg/kg for SRM 2668 Levels I and II, and certified values of (21.66 ± 0.73) μg/kg, (52.7 ± 1.1) μg/kg, and (78.8 ± 4.9) μg/kg for SRM 955c Levels 2, 3, and 4 respectively. Because of discrepancies between values obtained by different methods for SRM 955c Level 1, an information value of < 5 μg/kg was assigned for this material.

Standard Reference Material 3280 Multivitamin/ Multielement Tablets was issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in 2009, and has certified and reference mass fraction values for 13 vitamins, 26 elements, and two carotenoids. Elements were measured using two or more analytical methods at NIST with additional data contributed by collaborating laboratories. This reference material is expected to serve a dual purpose: to provide quality assurance in support of a database of dietary supplement products and to provide a means for analysts, dietary supplement manufacturers, and researchers to assess the appropriateness and validity of their analytical methods and the accuracy of their results.

Objective: We have designed a low-cost, reusable incubation system that allows cells to be cultured in either plated or suspension culture under complete atmospheric control for radiotracer characterization. We demonstrate its utility here in the first quantification of the hypoxia-dependent accumulation of Cu-diacetyl bis(N4-methylthiosemicarbazone) (Cu-ATSM) in adult rat ventricular myocytes (ARVMs)., Materials and Methods: ARVMs were allowed to adhere overnight in 9 cm culture plates (2×10 cells/dish) or were used in suspension culture, placed inside the chamber and equilibrated with either oxic (95 or 21% O₂/5% CO₂) or anoxic gas (95% N₂/5% CO₂). Cu-ATSM of 100 kBq was administered, and the cells were incubated for 30 or 60 min. Cells were then harvested, counted and fractionated to determine intracellular Cu biodistribution., Results: After 1 h, the average cellular Cu retention in plated ARVMs under oxygenated conditions was 23.9 ± 2.5 mBq/cell (95% O₂), increasing to 27.3 ± 5.1 under 21% O₂ (P<0.05) and to 36.1 ± 3.1 under 0% O₂ (P<0.05). When ARVMs were cultured in suspension, normoxic-hypoxic contrast was less marked but still significant [63.2 ± 14.1 vs. 53.4 ± 10.9% mBq/cell after 30 min (P<0.05)]. Sixty percent of tracer accumulated in the cytosol, and, although total cellular retention increased during hypoxia, there was no enrichment in any particular cellular compartment., Conclusion: This apparatus allows the conduction of radiotracer uptake studies in cells under complete atmospheric control, as evidenced by our first demonstration of the hypoxia-dependent uptake of Cu-ATSM in ventricular myocytes. It is ideally suited for screening, validating and characterizing novel hypoxia-selective radiotracers.

The structure of SnO2 nanoparticles (avg. 5 nm) with a few layers of water on the surface has been elucidated by atomic pair distribution function (PDF) methods using in situ neutron total scattering data and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Analysis of PDF, neutron prompt gamma, and thermogravimetric data, coupled with MD-generated surface D2O/OD configurations demonstrates that the minimum concentration of OD groups required to prevent rapid growth of nanoparticles during thermal dehydration corresponds to ~0.7 monolayer coverage. Surface hydration layers not only stabilize the SnO2 nanoparticles but also induce particle-size-dependent structural modifications and are likely to promote interfacial reactions through hydrogen bonds between adjacent particles. Upon heating/dehydration under vacuum above 250 °C, nanoparticles start to grow with low activation energies, rapid increase of nanoparticle size, and a reduction in the a lattice dimension. This study underscores the value of neutron diffraction and prompt-gamma analysis, coupled with molecular modeling, in elucidating the influence of surface hydration on the structure and metastable persistence of oxide nanomaterials.

High radiolabeling efficiency, preferably to high specific activity, and good stability of the radioimmunoconjugate are essential features for a successful immunoconjugate for imaging or therapy. In this study, the radiolabeling efficiency, in vitro stability, and biodistribution of immunoconjugates with eight different bifunctional chelators labeled with (64)Cu were compared. The anti-CD20 antibody, rituximab, was conjugated to four macrocyclic bifunctional chelators (p-SCN-Bn-DOTA, p-SCN-Bn-Oxo-DO3A, p-SCN-NOTA, and p-SCN-PCTA), three DTPA derivatives (p-SCN-Bn-DTPA, p-SCN-CHX-A″-DTPA, and ITC-2B3M-DTPA), and a macrobicyclic hexamine (sarcophagine) chelator (sar-CO2H) = (1-NH2-8-NHCO(CH2)3CO2H)sar where sar = sarcophagine = 3,6,10,13,16,19-hexaazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane). Radiolabeling efficiency under various conditions, in vitro stability in serum at 37 °C, and in vivo biodistribution and imaging in normal mice over 48 h were studied. All chelators except sar-CO2H were conjugated to rituximab by thiourea bond formation with an average of 4.9 ± 0.9 chelators per antibody molecule. Sar-CO2H was conjugated to rituximab by amide bond formation with 0.5 chelators per antibody molecule. Efficiencies of (64)Cu radiolabeling were dependent on the concentration of immunoconjugate. Notably, the (64)Cu-NOTA-rituximab conjugate demonstrated the highest radiochemical yield (95%) under very dilute conditions (31 nM NOTA-rituximab conjugate). Similarly, sar-CO-rituximab, containing 1/10th the number of chelators per antibody compared to that of other conjugates, retained high labeling efficiency (98%) at an antibody concentration of 250 nM. In contrast to the radioimmunoconjugates containing DTPA derivatives, which demonstrated poor serum stability, all macrocyclic radioimmunoconjugates were very stable in serum with <6% dissociation of (64)Cu over 48 h. In vivo biodistribution profiles in normal female Balb/C mice were similar for all the macrocyclic radioimmunoconjugates with most of the activity remaining in the blood pool up to 48 h. While all the macrocyclic bifunctional chelators are suitable for molecular imaging using (64)Cu-labeled antibody conjugates, NOTA and sar-CO2H show significant advantages over the others in that they can be radiolabeled rapidly at room temperature, under dilute conditions, resulting in high specific activity.

Several techniques were evaluated for the establishment of reliable water/moisture content of single-wall carbon nanotubes. Karl Fischer titration (KF) provides a direct measure of the water content and was used for benchmarking against results obtained by conventional oven drying, desiccation over anhydrous magnesium perchlorate as well as by thermogravimetry and prompt gamma-ray activation analysis. Agreement amongst results was satisfactory with the exception of thermogravimetry, although care must be taken with oven drying as it is possible to register mass gain after an initial moisture loss if prolonged drying time or elevated temperatures (120 °C) are used. Thermogravimetric data were precise but a bias was evident that could be accounted for by considering the non-selective loss of mass as volatile carbonaceous components. Simple drying over anhydrous magnesium perchlorate for a minimum period of 8-10 days is recommended if KF is not available for this measurement.

The synthesis of new cage amine macrobicyclic ligands with pendent carboxylate functional groups designed for application in copper radiopharmaceuticals is described. Reaction of [Cu((NH(2))(2)sar)](2+) (sar = 3,6,10,13,16,19-hexaazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane) with either succinic or glutaric anhydride results in selective acylation of the primary amine atoms of [Cu((NH(2))(2)sar)](2+) to give derivatives with either one or two aliphatic carboxylate functional groups separated from the cage amine framework by either a four- or five-atom linker. The Cu(II) serves to protect the secondary amine nitrogen atoms from acylation, and can be removed to give the free ligands. The newly appended carboxylate functional groups can be used as sites of attachment for cancer-targeting peptides such as Lys(3)-bombesin. The synthesis of the first dimeric sarcophagine-peptide conjugate, possessing two Lys(3)-bombesin peptides tethered to a single cage amine, is presented. This species has been radiolabeled with copper-64 at ambient temperature and there is minimal dissociation of Cu(II) from the conjugate even after two days of incubation in human serum.

Radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA) with retention on hydrated manganese dioxide (HMD) has played a key role in the certification of As in biological materials at NIST. Although this method provides very high and reproducible yields and detection limits at low microgram/kilogram levels, counting geometry uncertainties may arise from unequal distribution of As in the HMD, and arsenic detection limits may not be optimal due to significant retention of other elements. An alternate RNAA procedure with separation of arsenic by solvent extraction has been investigated. After digestion of samples in nitric and perchloric acids, As(III) is extracted from 2 M sulfuric acid solution into a solution of zinc diethyldithiocarbamate in chloroform. Counting of (76)As allows quantitation of arsenic. Addition of an (77)As tracer solution prior to dissolution allows correction for chemical yield and counting geometries, further improving reproducibility. The HMD and solvent extraction procedures for arsenic were compared through analysis of SRMs 1577c (bovine liver), 1547 (peach leaves), and 1575a (pine needles). Both methods gave As results in agreement with certified values with comparable reproducibility. However, the solvent extraction method yields a factor of 3 improvement in detection limits and is less time-consuming than the HMD method. The new method shows great promise for use in As certification in reference materials.

A material containing single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with other carbon species, catalyst residues, and trace element contaminants has been prepared by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for characterization and distribution as Standard Reference Material SRM 2483 Carbon Nanotube Soot. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were selected to characterize the elemental composition. Catalyst residues at percentage mass fraction level were determined with independent NAA procedures and a number of trace elements, including selected rare earth elements, were determined with NAA and ICP-MS procedures. The results of the investigated materials agreed well among the NAA and ICP-MS procedures and good agreement of measured values with certified values was found in selected SRMs included in the analyses. Based on this work mass fraction values for catalyst and trace elements were assigned to the candidate SRM.

Purpose: The human sodium/iodide symporter (hNIS) is a well-established target in thyroid disease and reporter gene imaging using gamma emitters (123)I-iodide, (131)I-iodide and (99m)Tc-pertechnetate. However, no PET imaging agent is routinely available. The aim of this study was to prepare and evaluate (18)F-labelled tetrafluoroborate ([(18)F]TFB) for PET imaging of hNIS., Methods: [(18)F]TFB was prepared by isotopic exchange of BF (4) (-) with [(18)F]fluoride in hot hydrochloric acid and purified using an alumina column. Its identity, purity and stability in serum were determined by HPLC, thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and mass spectrometry. Its interaction with NIS was assessed in vitro using FRTL-5 rat thyroid cells, with and without stimulation by thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), in the presence and absence of perchlorate. Biodistribution and PET imaging studies were performed using BALB/c mice, with and without perchlorate inhibition., Results: [(18)F]TFB was readily prepared with specific activity of 10 GBq/mg. It showed rapid accumulation in FRTL-5 cells that was stimulated by TSH and inhibited by perchlorate, and rapid specific accumulation in vivo in thyroid (SUV = 72 after 1 h) and stomach that was inhibited 95% by perchlorate., Conclusion: [(18)F]TFB is an easily prepared PET imaging agent for rodent NIS and should be evaluated for hNIS PET imaging in humans.

Bulk silicon-germanium (SiGe) alloys and two SiGe thick films (4 and 5 microm) on Si wafers were tested with the electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) using wavelength dispersive spectrometers (WDS) for heterogeneity and composition for use as reference materials needed by the microelectronics industry. One alloy with a nominal composition of Si0.86Ge0.14 and the two thick films with nominal compositions of Si0.90Ge0.10 and Si0.75Ge0.25 on Si, evaluated for micro- and macroheterogeneity, will make good microanalysis reference materials with an overall expanded heterogeneity uncertainty of 1.1% relative or less for Ge. The bulk Ge composition in the Si0.86Ge0.14 alloy was determined to be 30.228% mass fraction Ge with an expanded uncertainty of the mean of 0.195% mass fraction. The thick films were quantified with WDS-EPMA using both the Si0.86Ge0.14 alloy and element wafers as reference materials. The Ge concentration was determined to be 22.80% mass fraction with an expanded uncertainty of the mean of 0.12% mass fraction for the Si0.90Ge0.10 wafer and 43.66% mass fraction for the Si0.75Ge0.25 wafer with an expanded uncertainty of the mean of 0.25% mass fraction. The two thick SiGe films will be issued as National Institute of Standards and Technology Reference Materials (RM 8905).

Purpose: Hypoxia occurs frequently in cancers and can lead to therapeutic resistance due to poor perfusion and loss of the oxygen enhancement effect. (64)Cu-ATSM has shown promise as a hypoxia diagnostic agent due to its selective uptake and retention in hypoxic cells and its emission of positrons for PET imaging. (64)Cu also emits radiotoxic Auger electrons and beta(-) particles and may therefore exhibit therapeutic potential when concentrated in hypoxic tissue., Methods: MCF-7 cells were treated with 0-10 MBq/ml (64)Cu-ATSM under differing oxygen conditions ranging from normoxia to severe hypoxia. Intracellular response to hypoxia was measured using Western blotting for expression of HIF-1alpha, while cellular accumulation of (64)Cu was measured by gamma counting. DNA damage and cytotoxicity were measured with, respectively, the Comet assay and clonogenic survival., Results: (64)Cu-ATSM uptake in MCF-7 cells increased as atmospheric oxygen decreased (up to 5.6 Bq/cell at 20.9% oxygen, 10.4 Bq/cell at 0.1% oxygen and 26.0 Bq/cell at anoxia). Toxicity of (64)Cu-ATSM in MCF-7 cells also increased as atmospheric oxygen decreased, with survival of 9.8, 1.5 and 0% in cells exposed to 10 MBq/ml at 20.9, 0.1 and 0% oxygen. The Comet assay revealed a statistically significant increase in (64)Cu-ATSM-induced DNA damage under hypoxic conditions., Conclusion: The results support a model in which hypoxia-enhanced uptake of radiotoxic (64)Cu induces sufficient DNA damage and toxicity to overcome the documented radioresistance in hypoxic MCF-7 cells. This suggests that (64)Cu-ATSM and related complexes have potential for targeted radionuclide therapy of hypoxic tumours.

The reaction of [Mn(CN)L'(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)R(4)Me)] with cis- or trans-[MnBrL(CO)(2)(dppm)], in the presence of Tl[PF(6)], gives homobinuclear cyanomanganese(i) complexes cis- or trans-[(dppm)(CO)(2)LMn(micro-NC)MnL'(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)R(4)Me)](+), linkage isomers of which, cis- or trans-[(dppm)(CO)(2)LMn(micro-CN)MnL'(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)R(4)Me)](+), are synthesised by reacting cis- or trans-[Mn(CN)L(CO)(2)(dppm)] with [MnIL'(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)R(4)Me)] in the presence of Tl[PF(6)]. X-Ray structural studies on the isomers trans-[(dppm)(CO)(2){(EtO)(3)P}Mn(micro-NC)Mn(CNBu(t))(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me)](+) and trans-[(dppm)(CO)(2){(EtO)(3)P}Mn(micro-CN)Mn(CNBu(t))(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me)](+) show nearly identical molecular structures whereas cis-[(dppm)(CO)(2){(PhO)(3)P}Mn(micro-NC)Mn{P(OPh)(3)}(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me)](+) and cis-[(dppm)(CO)(2){(PhO)(3)P}Mn(micro-CN)Mn{P(OPh)(3)}(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me)](+) differ, effectively in the N- and C-coordination respectively of two different optical isomers of the pseudo-tetrahedral units (NC)Mn{P(OPh)(3)}(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me) and (CN)Mn{P(OPh)(3)}(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me) to the octahedral manganese centre. Electrochemical and spectroscopic studies on [(dppm)(CO)(2)LMn(micro-XY)MnL'(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)R(4)Me)](+) show that systematic variation of the ligands L and L', of the cyclopentadienyl ring substituents R, and of the micro-CN orientation (XY = CN or NC) allows control of the order of oxidation of the two metal centres and hence the direction and energy of metal-metal charge-transfer (MMCT) through the cyanide bridge in the mixed-valence dications. Chemical one-electron oxidation of cis- or trans-[(dppm)(CO)(2)LMn(micro-NC)MnL'(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)R(4)Me)](+) with [NO][PF(6)] gives the mixed-valence dications trans-[(dppm)(CO)(2)LMn(II)(micro-NC)Mn(I)L'(NO)(eta(5)-C(5)R(4)Me)](2+) which show solvatochromic absorptions in the electronic spectrum, assigned to optically induced Mn(I)-to-Mn(II) electron transfer via the cyanide bridge.

The effect of tail-pinch stress interpolated between the saccharin conditioned stimulus (CS) and the illness-inducing unconditioned stimulus (US) during long-trace taste-aversion conditioning was examined in young- and old adult rats with a two-cylinder (saccharin versus water) test. A 2 x 2 x 4 factorial ANOVA was performed on percent-preference-for-saccharin data, with age (young, old), stress condition (stressed, non-stressed), and CS-US interval (22.5-, 45-, 90-, and 180-min) being the factors under consideration. The ANOVA yielded only significant main effects of stress condition and CS-US interval. These findings indicate that stress weakens the CS-US association as evidenced by a higher percent preference for saccharin in the stressed rats than in non-stressed rats at all CS-US intervals. A comparison of the stressed and non-stressed conditioned rats with pseudo-conditioned controls showed that the non-stressed rats formed strong aversions up to the 45-min CS-US interval whereas the stressed rats showed no conditioning beyond the 22.5 min CS-US interval, indicating that stress decreases the effective CS-US interval. Results were interpreted in terms of time-contraction and an internal biological countdown timer hypothesized to govern processes involved in associative learning over long delays.

New (tetrakis)imidazolium macrocyclic receptor systems of variable cavity size have been synthesised by stepwise alkylation reactions of bis(imidazolium) precursor compounds. Proton NMR titration studies reveal the macrocycles to strongly bind halide and benzoate anions, with two receptor systems displaying notable selectivity for fluoride in competitive acetonitrile-water (9:1) solvent media.

A wide range of pseudorotaxane assemblies containing positively charged pyridinium, pyridinium nicotinamide, imidazolium, benzimidazolium and guanidinium threading components, and macrocyclic isophthalamide polyether ligands have been prepared using a general anion templation procedure. In noncompetitive solvent media, coupling halide anion recognition by a macrocyclic ligand with ion-pairing between the halide anion and a strongly associated cation provides the driving force for interpenetration. Extensive solution 1H NMR binding studies, thermodynamic investigations, and single-crystal X-ray structure determinations reveal that the nature of the halide anion template, strength of the ion-pairing between the anion template and the cationic threading component, and to a lesser extent favorable second sphere pi-pi aromatic stacking interactions between the positively charged threading component and macrocyclic ligand, together with macrocyclic ring size, affect the efficacy of pseudorotaxane formation.

An instrument for cold neutron prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA), located at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR), has proven useful for the measurement of boron in a variety of materials. Neutrons, moderated by passage through liquid hydrogen at 20 K, pass through a (58)Ni coated guide to the PGAA station in the cold neutron guide hall of the NCNR. The thermal equivalent neutron fluence rate at the sample position is 9 x 10(8) cm(-2) s(-1). Prompt gamma rays are measured by a cadmium- and lead-shielded high-purity germanium detector. The instrument has been used to measure boron mass fractions in minerals, in NIST SRM 2175 (Refractory Alloy MP-35-N) for certification of boron, and most recently in semiconductor-grade silicon. The limit of detection for boron in many materials is <10 ng g(-1).

The first example of a [2]catenane structure to be synthesized using anion templation is described. The nature of the anion template is demonstrated to be crucial to the assembly process, with only chloride anion producing the [2]catenane in acceptable yield. Anion binding studies reveal a dramatic catenation effect on anion selectivity properties as compared to a noncatenated acyclic receptor.

Reaction of the bis-bidentate bridging ligand L(3), in which two bidentate chelating 3(2-pyridyl)pyrazole units are separated by a 3,3'-biphenyl spacer, with Co(II) salts affords tetranuclear cage complexes of composition [Co(4)(L(3))(6)]X(8)(X =[BF(4)](-), [ClO(4)](-), [PF(6)](-) or I(-)) in which four 6-coordinate Co(II) ions in an approximately tetrahedral array are connected by six bis-bidentate bridging ligands, one spanning each of the six edges of the Co(4) tetrahedron. In every case, X-ray crystallography reveals that the 'apical' Co(II) ion has a fac tris-chelate geometry, whereas the other three Co(II) ions have mer tris-chelate geometries, resulting in (non-crystallographic)C(3) symmetry for the cages; that this structure is retained in solution is confirmed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy of the paramagnetic cages. In every case one of the anions is located inside the central cavity of the cage, with the remaining seven outside. We found no clear evidence for an anion-based templating effect. The cage superstructure is sufficiently large to leave gaps in the centres of the faces through which the internal and external anions can exchange. Variable-temperature (19)F NMR spectroscopy was used to investigate the dynamic behaviour of the cages with X =[BF(4)](-) and [PF(6)](-) in MeCN solution: in both cases two separate signals, corresponding to external and internal anions, are clear at 233 K which have coalesced to a single signal at room temperature. Analysis of the linewidth of the minor signal (for the internal anion) at various temperatures below coalescence gave an activation energy for anion exchange of ca. 50 kJ mol(-1) in each case, a figure which suggests that anion exchange can occur via a conformational rearrangement of the cage superstructure in solution rather than opening of the cavity by cleavage of metal-ligand bonds.

A series of new photo-active rhenium(i) bipyridyl based pseudorotaxane complexes is assembled via halide anion templation.

Five novel limonoids, 1-5, were isolated from the root bark of Turraea wakefieldii and were characterized as tecleaninoid derivatives. This is the first report of the natural occurrence of tecleanin-type limonoids with a five-membered-ring A-seco structure for which we propose the name neotecleanins. The relative stereochemical structures of compounds 1-5 were established on the basis of NMR spectroscopy. The absolute stereochemical structure of 5 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction methods. In mosquito larvicidal assays, compounds 1, 2 and 4 showed dose-dependent larvicidal activity against larvae of Anopheles gambiae s.s.

A radiochemical neutron activation analysis procedure has been developed, critically evaluated, and shown to have the necessary sensitivity, chemical specificity, matrix independence, and precision to certify phosphorus at ion implantation levels in silicon. 32P, produced by neutron capture of 31P, is chemically separated from the sample matrix and measured using a beta proportional counter. The method is used here to certify the amount of phosphorus in SRM 2133 (Phosphorus Implant in Silicon Depth Profile Standard) as (9.58 +/- 0.16) x 10(14) atoms x cm(-2). A detailed evaluation of uncertainties is given.

The bridging ligands L(1) and L(2) contain two N,N-bidentate pyrazolyl-pyridine units linked to a central aromatic spacer unit (1,2-phenyl or 2,3-naphthyl, respectively). Reaction with Ni(II) salts and treatment with the anions tetrafluoroborate or perchlorate result in formation of dinuclear complexes having a 2:3 metal:ligand ratio, with one bridging and two terminal tetradentate ligands. In contrast, reaction of L(1) and L(2) with Co(II) salts, followed by treatment with tetrafluoroborate or perchlorate, results in assembly of cage complexes having a 4:6 metal:ligand ratio; these complexes have a metal ion at each corner of an approximate tetrahedron, and a bis-bidentate bridging ligand spanning each edge. The central cavity is occupied by a tetrahedral counterion that forms multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions with the methylene protons of the bridging ligands. The anionic guest fits tightly into the central cavity of the cage to which it is ideally complementary in terms of shape, size, and charge. Solution NMR experiments show that the central anion acts as a template for cage formation, with a mixture of Co(II) and the appropriate bridging ligand alone giving no assembly into a cage until the tetrahedral anion is added, at which point cage assembly is fast and quantitative. The difference between the structures of the complexes with Ni(II) and Co(II) illustrate how the uncoordinated anions can exert a profound influence on the course of the assembly process.

The enantiomerically pure diastereoisomers (1R,4S,4aR,7S,7aR)- (1) and (1R,4R,4aR,7S,7aR)-dihydronepetalactol (2) were synthesized diastereoselectively from a renewable resource, (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone (3), isolated as the main constituent of the essential oil of the catmint plant Nepeta cataria. The stereochemistry of the compounds was determined by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, and the compounds were identified, respectively, as neomatatabiol and isoneomatatabiol, natural products from Actinidia polygama, for which the lactol stereochemistry was previously incompletely defined. Compound 1 was found to catch significant numbers of three species of lacewing in the field: in Korea. Chrysopa cognata, and in the United Kingdom, Nineta vittata and most notably Peverimhoffina gracilis. All species caught in significant numbers were found more frequently in traps releasing 1 than 2, while more C. cognata, C. formosa, and C. phyllochroma were found in traps releasing (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol (4). The catch of P. gracilis with 1 is of particular interest as this lacewing has only recently been recorded in the United Kingdom. Where sexed, the lacewings of all species trapped were found to be male, implying a possible pheromonal role for these or structurally related compounds.

Synthesis and characterisation of cyano-bridged complexes of the form [(eta-C5R4Me)L(ON)Mn(mu-XY)Mn(CO)2-L'(dppm)]z (X,Y = C,N; z = 1-3) shows that systematic variation of the orientation of the CN bridge and the nature and geometric arrangement of the ancillary ligands affords control of the direction and energy of metal-metal charge transfer in the mixed valence dications.

An instrument for cold neutron prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (CNPGAA) has been used for the nondestructive determination of nitrogen. The samples were analyzed in an evacuated box to minimize background from neutron capture by atmospheric nitrogen. The system features lower background and lower detection limits than obtainable with the University of Maryland-National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) thermal neutron PGAA instrument. CNPGAA has been used to measure nitrogen in standard reference materials which included biological materials and soils; the results are in agreement with certified values. The detection limit for nitrogen in most biological and geological samples is near 1000 mg kg-1.

Magnetic neutron scattering provides evidence for nucleation of antiferromagnetic droplets around impurities in a doped nickel oxide-based quantum magnet. The undoped parent compound contains a spin liquid with a cooperative singlet ground state and a gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Calcium doping creates excitations below the gap with an incommensurate structure factor. We show that weakly interacting antiferromagnetic droplets with a central phase shift of pi and a size controlled by the correlation length of the quantum liquid can account for the data. The experiment provides a quantitative impression of the magnetic polarization cloud associated with holes in a doped transition metal oxide.

Voltammograms (polarograms) obtained from solutions of cobalt and nickel containing dimethylglyoxime (dmgH(2)) are widely used for the trace determination of these metals. Detailed electrochemical and spectroscopic studies on the reduction process observed in the analytically important ammonia buffer media at mercury dropping, hanging, and pool electrodes are all consistent with an overall 10-electron reduction process, in which both the dmgH(2) ligand and cobalt ions are reduced in the adsorbed state:  Co(II) + 2dmgH(2) ⇌ (solution) [Co(II)(dmgH)(2)] + 2H(+); [Co(II)(dmgH)(2)] + Hg ⇌ (electrode) [Co(II)(dmgH)(2)](ads)Hg; and [Co(II)(dmgH)(2)](ads)Hg + 10e(-) + 10H(+) → Co(Hg) + 2[2,3-bis(hydroxylamino)butane]. The limited solubility of the nickel complex in aqueous media restricts the range of studies that can be undertaken with this system, but an analogous mechanism is believed to occur. Low-temperature voltammetric studies in dichloromethane at a frozen hanging mercury drop electrode and in situ electron spin resonance electrochemical measurements on more soluble analogues of the dimethylglyoxime complexes are consistent with an initial one-electron reduction step being available in the absence of water. Deliberate addition of water to acetone solutions enables the influence of the aqueous environment on voltammograms and polarograms to be examined. The results of the present study are compared with the wide range of mechanisms proposed in other studies.
