An objective was detailed the digital workflow steps to analyze dental arch of children with cleft lip and palate. Five children underwent impressions of the upper dental arches in the following stages: Stage 1 – before lip repair (3 months of life); Stage 2 – after lip repair/ before palate repair (12 months of life); Stage 3 – after palate repair (24 months of life); and Stage 4 – with early complete/ mixed deciduous dentition (from 5 years of age). After the impressions, dental casts were made with orthodontic plaster, and trimmed to obtain standardized dentoalveolar bases. Dental cast digitalization was performed using a 3D scanner coupled to a computer. Using stereophotogrammetry system software, anatomical landmarks were delimited for the evaluation of linear measurements, palatal surface area, volume, and dental arch superimposition. It is concluded that, the digital analysis of dental arches represents a significant change in the diagnostic process and treatment planning of children with orofacial clefts. The multiplicity of equipment and software guarantees reliable, reproducible, and valid tools for use in clinical practice and in scientific research.

Objectives This study aimed to compare dimensional alterations of dental arches in children with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate before and after different techniques of primary plastic surgeries. Materials and methods The sample was divided into two groups: group 1-cheiloplasty by Millard's technique and one-stage palatoplasty by von Langenbeck's technique; group 2-cheiloplasty by Millard's technique and two-stage palatoplasty: anterior palatoplasty by Hans Pichler's technique and posterior palatoplasty by Sommerlad's technique. Dental arches were evaluated before (T1), after the first phase (T2), and 1 year after the second phase (T3) of primary surgeries. Linear measurements and palatal area were assessed. To analyze the method's error, interclass correlation coefficient was applied. ANOVA (followed by Tukey test), dependent, and independent t-test were used (p Results At T1, the intertuberosity distance was statistically greater in G2 (p = 0.004). At T2, the anterior length of the dental arch was statistically greater in G2 (p = 0.025), while the area of the smaller palatal segment (p = 0.001), cleft area (p = 0.014), and total area (p = 0.002) were statistically smaller in G2. At T3, the intertuberosity distance was statistically greater in G2 (p = 0.017). Conclusion This study suggests that cheiloplasty and one-stage palatoplasty resulted in smaller growth of maxilla than cheiloplasty and two-stage palatoplasty in the linear measurements (T-T' and I-CC') and total area of the dental arches. Clinical relevance Surgical protocols need to be evaluated to verify their effects aiming at improving the clinical practice of the interdisciplinary team, determining new parameters for the rehabilitation of individuals with cleft lip and palate.

Background Dogs’ saliva is a complex mixture of inorganic and organic constituents, rich in proteins. Therefore, knowing the saliva composition of these animals is extremely important to identify the presence of proteins that may be involved in physiological and pathological mechanisms of their oral cavity. The present study aimed to characterize the proteomic profile of saliva from dogs with and without dental calculus. Results Saliva samples were collected from 20 dogs. Before the collection, a visual clinical examination was performed and 8 subjects (40%) did not present any signs of dental calculus, while 12 (60%) presented dental calculus. After saliva collection, the samples were submitted to protein quantification (mBCA), and then they were prepared for analysis by nLC-ESI-MS/MS. A total of 658 unique proteins were identified, of which 225 were specific to dogs without dental calculus, 300 were specific to dogs with dental calculus, and 133 were common to all subjects. These proteins presented functions including transportation, immune response, structural, enzymatic regulation, signal transduction, transcription, metabolism, and some proteins perform functions as yet unknown. Several salivary proteins in dogs with dental calculus differed from those found in the group without dental calculus. Among the abundant proteins detected in periodontal affected cases, can be highlighting calcium-sensing receptor and transforming growth factor beta. Enrichment analysis reveled the presence of Rho GTPases signaling pathway. Conclusions This research identified salivary proteins, that should be further investigated as potencial biomarkers of chronic periodontits with dental calculus formation in dogs.

Oral cleft surgical repairs are performed using different techniques worldwide. Objective To evaluate and compare the development of the dental arches of children with unilateral cleft lip and palate before and after the primary surgeries performed with different techniques at the first months and six years of life. Methodology This is a retrospective longitudinal study. The sample comprised 56 dental casts divided int the following groups: Group 1 (G1) – cheiloplasty (Millard technique) at three months and one-step palatoplasty (von Langenbeck technique) at 12 months; and Group 2 (G2) – cheiloplasty (Millard technique) and two-step palatoplasty: anterior hard palate closure (Hans Pichler technique) at three months and posterior soft palate closure (Sommerlad technique) at 12 months. Aim: to evaluate the surgical effects of two rehabilitation protocols on dental arch occlusion of 5-year-old children with or without cleft lip and palate. Methods: this is a retrospective longitudinal study the sample comprised 45 digitized dental casts divided into followed groups: Group 1 (G1) – children who underwent to cheiloplasty (Millard technique) at 3 months and to one-stage palatoplasty (von Langenbeck technique) at 12 months; Group 2 (G2) – children who underwent to cheiloplasty (Millard technique) and two-stage palatoplasty (Hans Pichler technique for hard palate closure) at 3 months and at 12 months to soft palate closure (Sommerlad technique); and Group 3 (G3) – children without craniofacial anomalies. Linear measurements, area, and occlusion were evaluated by stereophotogrammetry software. Shapiro-Wilk test was used to verify normality. ANOVA followed by posthoc Tukey test and Kruskal-Wallis followed by posthoc Dunn tests were used to compared groups. Results: For the measures intercanine distance (C-C’), anterior length of dental arch (I-CC’), and total length of the dental arch (I–MM’), there were statistical differences between G1x G3 and G2xG3, the mean was smaller for G1 and G2. No statistically significant differences occurred in the intermolar distance and in the dental arch area among groups. The occlusion analysis revealed significant difference in the comparison of the three groups (p=0.0004). Conclusion: The surgical effects of two rehabilitation protocols affected the occlusion and the development of the anterior region of the maxilla of children with oral clefts when compared to children without oral clefts.

This study aimed to evaluate longitudinally the alteration of the dental arch dimensions of children with different oral cleft types, before and after the primary surgeries. Three-dimensional images of the maxillary dental casts of children with unilateral complete cleft lip (G1), unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (G2), and cleft palate (G3). The children were evaluated at pre-cheiloplasty (T1), pre-palatoplasty (T2), and 1 year after palatoplasty (T3). The measurements obtained: intercanine (C-C') and intertuberosity (T-T') distances, anterior (I-CC') and total (I-TT') arch lengths. To analyze the intraexaminer error, paired t-test was applied and Dahlbergh formula. The intragroups comparisons were applied: paired t-test, ANOVA followed by Tukey, Wilcoxon test, and Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn test. The intergroup comparisons were performed by independent t-test and Mann-Whitney test. In G1, the C-C', T-T', and the I-TT' distances revealed a significant increase of the maxilla. In G2, the C-C' distance statistically decreased from T1 to T3, T-T' distance showed statistical increase from T1 to T3. The I-TT' length increased with statistically significant differences between T1 and T3, T2 and T3. In G3, the C-C', T-T', and I-TT' distance increased was statistically significant. The longitudinal evaluation of the changes occurred in the dental arches with different oral cleft types showed that cheiloplasty and palatoplasty caused the most alterations in the development of the maxillary dimensions of children with complete cleft lip and palate.

This study evaluated the palatal surface area in children with different oral clefts after primary surgeries and at five years of age. This longitudinal study was composed by 216 digital models: unilateral complete cleft lip (UCL), unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP), and complete cleft palate (CP). The models were analysed at four time periods: T1 (before cheiloplasty), T2 (before palatoplasty), T3 (after palatoplasty); and T4 - (at five years of age). Area of the dental arches was measured through stereophotogrammetry software. Measurements evaluated with Student's test and ANOVA followed by the Tukey test (p0.05) (AQ 1). In the UCL group, the palatal surface area significantly increased among phases. In the primary surgery periods, UCLP and CP significantly decreased (p0.001). Palatal area in the UCLP group was significantly greater than the CP group. Overall, no statistically significant differences occurred among groups. At T4, the area of the palate in the UCL group was significantly greater than the UCLP group and no significant differences occurred between UCLP and CP groups. This study suggests that cheiloplasty did not inhibit the growth of the palatal surface area in children with UCL and UCLP. Palatoplasty significantly decreased the palatal area in children with UCLP and CP, demonstrating a significant negative effect of palatal repair on maxillary growth. At five years, children with UCLP and CP had a significantly smaller palate area than those with UCL.

The assessment of rehabilitation outcomes requires a patient documentation protocol, including records obtained at standardized ages, to compare different types of surgeries, their effects, as well as between different rehabilitation centers. The aim of this paper was to present proper trays for babies with different types of cleft lip and palate, which are used in the outpatient routine at Hospital of Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies/USP (HRAC/USP). The customized trays are made with self-curing acrylic resin. The tray must have suitable depth to copy the buccal sulcus, and wax is usually applied to contour the tray edge, and the adjustment of the tray to the fornix, making the tray specific for each child. The impression precludes the utilization of dental casts for diagnosis, treatment plan, and research measurements. In the clinical practice at HRAC-USP, it was observed that customized trays increased the quality of impression, accurately reproducing anatomical features of dental arches of babies with oral clefts.

A biobank is an organized collection of biological human material and its associated information stored for research according to regulations under institutional responsibility, without commercial purposes, being a mandatory and strategical activity for research, regenerative medicine, and innovation. Stem cells have largely been employed in research and frequently stored in biobanks, which have been used as an essential source of biological materials. Stem cells of human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) are stem cells which have a high multipotency and can be easily obtained. Besides, this extremely accessible tissue has advantages with respect to storage, as the SHED obtained in childhood can be used in later life, which implies the necessity for the creation and regulation of biobanks. The proper planning for the creation of a biobank includes knowledge of the material types to be stored, requirements regarding handling and storage conditions, storage time, and room for the number of samples. Thus, this study aimed to establish an overview of the development of a SHED biobank. Ethical and legal standardization, current applications, specific orientations, and challenges for the implementation of a SHED biobank were discussed. Through this overview, we hope to encourage further studies to use SHED biobanks.

Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) often happens in early childhood, the examination method is clinical and radiographic. Another methodology that has been used to aid in TDI diagnosis is molecular biology. A fluid that has been studied in molecular biology is gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), which is an appropriate fluid to evaluate the relation between periodontal tissues and pulp, and its compounds will depend on either the health or inflammation level of tissues. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the proteins/peptides in GCF of primary tooth with different sequelae of TDI to clarify the proteins/peptides functions in order to contribute in the diagnosis of pulp and periodontal conditions. The sample was composed for 8 children with TDI, ranging 4 to 6 years. GCF samples were collected in 4 points of the gingival sulcus of both the 12 traumatized teeth and the 8 primary first molar, divided into 5 groups: Molar group (deciduous first molar), No alteration, Pulp Canal Obliteration (PCO), Repair-Related Resorption (RRR) and Pulp Necrosis (PN). GCF proteins were subjected to liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry for identification and characterization. 436 single proteins/peptides were found in this study. 43 (9.86%) were in No alteration group, 92 (21.10%) in PCO group, 23 (5.28%) in RRR group, 16 (3.67%) in PN group, and finaly, 114 (26.15%) in molar group. All groups revealed the following peptides/proteins functions: immune response, cell degradation and recycling, repair and maintenance, enzymatic process, cell binding, cell signaling, cell differentiation, cell migration, structural components and antioxidant activity. Proteins functions related to the specific groups: molar group played role in homeostasis process. No alteration group, I6L9F6_HUMAN, NEB2_HUMAN, Q5T0H8_HUMAN, H0YJG4_HUMAN are related to nervous tissue, and, TET1_HUMAN to odontoblast differentiation. RRR group, CALX_HUMAN, B8ZZF0_HUMAN are related to senescence, and KMT2D_HUMAN mutation is associated to skeletal deformation. PCO group, CATA_HUMAN is response to hypoxia, fibroblast transformation, and osteoblast differentiation; MTA70_HUMAN is related to stem cell differentiation; ITPR2_HUMAN releases calcium ion into cytosol. Fistula group: Q8TAS6_HUMAN development of neuronal tissue; E9PDR3_HUMAN neurotransmitter release, cell division and death; B4DT36_HUMAN play a role in conducting axon; C9JN07_HUMAN mitotic process; RSF1_HUMAN DNA repair; Q19KS2_HUMAN immune defense. Concluding, TDI of primary tooth profile undergoing different sequelae type was characterized. The proteins of molar group exhibited complete homeostasis. In no alteration group, the proteins play a role in maintaining the nervous tissue. The proteins of PCO group were involved in cell transformation and differentiation to reach canal root obliteration. The proteins of RRR group revealed a senescence process. In fistula group the proteins play a role to surround the inflammation site. O trauma dentário (TD) geralmente ocorre na primeira infância, e os exames para tratamento e acompanhamento são majoritariamente clínico e radiográfico. Outro método auxiliar que tem sido usado para diagnóstico é a biologia molecular. Sendo, o fluido gengival crevicular (FGC) um fluido apropriado para avaliar a relação entre os tecidos periodontais e a polpa, e seus compostos dependerão do nível de saúde ou inflamação dos tecidos. Desta forma, este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar as proteínas e peptídeos do FGC de dentes decíduos com diferentes sequelas relacionadas ao TD, a fim de auxiliar no diagnóstico da polpa e condição da periodontal. A amostra foi composta por crianças com TD, com a faixa etária entre 4 a 6 anos. As amostras de FGC foram coletadas em 4 pontos do sulco gengival dos 12 dentes traumatizados e de 8 primeiros molares decíduos, os quais foram divididos em 5 grupos: molar (primeiro molar decíduo), sem alteração, obliteração do canal pulpar (OCP), reparo relacionado à reabsorção (RRR) e necrose pulpar (NP). As proteínas do FCG foram submetidas espectrometria de massa em tandem de ionização por eletrovaporização, para identificação e caracterização. Oito crianças com 5 anos de idade, em média. 436 proteínas/peptídeos únicos foram encontrados neste estudo. 43 (9,86%) estavam no grupo Sem alteração, 92 (21,10%) no grupo OCP, 23 (5,28%) no grupo RRR, 16 (3,67%) no grupo NP, 114 (26,15%) no grupo molar. Todos os grupos revelaram as seguintes funções peptídeos / proteínas: resposta imune / degradação celular e reciclagem / reparo e manutenção / processo enzimático / ligação celular / sinalização celular / diferenciação celular / migração celular / componentes estruturais / atividade antioxidante. Funções proteicas relacionadas aos grupos: grupo molar desempenhou papel no processo de homeostase. As proteínas do grupo sem alteração: I6L9F6_HUMAN, NEB2_HUMAN, Q5T0H8_HUMAN, H0YJG4_HUMAN estão relacionadas ao tecido nervoso; e, TET1_HUMAN à diferenciação odontoblástica. As proteínas do grupo RRR: CALX_HUMAN, B8ZZF0_HUMAN estão relacionadas à senescência; e a mutação de KMT2D_HUMAN está associada à deformação esquelética. As proteínas do grupo PCO: CATA_HUMAN está associada à resposta de hipóxia, transformação de fibroblastos e diferenciação de osteoblastos; MTA70_HUMAN diferenciação de célulastronco; ITPR2_HUMAN libera íon de cálcio no citosol. As proteínas do grupo da fístula: Q8TAS6_HUMAN está relacionada ao desenvolvimento do tecido neuronal; E9PDR3_HUMAN à liberação de neurotransmissores, divisão e morte celular; B4DT36_HUMAN desempenha um papel na condução do axônio; C9JN07_HUMAN relaciona-se ao processo mitótico; RSF1_HUMAN ao reparo de DNA; Q19KS2_HUMAN à defesa imunológica. Concluindo, o perfil dos dentes decíduos que sofreram trauma e tiveram diferentes tipos de sequelas foi caracterizado por diferentes proteínas. O grupo molar exibiu homeostase. Grupo sem alteração, as proteínas desempenharam um papel na manutenção do tecido nervoso. As proteínas do grupo PCO estavam envolvidas na transformação e diferenciação celular para atingir a obliteração do canal radicular. As proteínas do grupo RRR revelaram um processo de senescência. No grupo de fístula, as proteínas parecem desempenhar um papel para cercar o local da inflamação.

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the dimensional alterations of the maxillary dental arches after lip repair in children with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate of two different protocols. Material and methods The sample was composed of 94 digital models and divided in two groups: Group I – 23 children, (protocol 1) – with presurgical orthopedic intervention: Hotz plate; Group II – 24 children, (protocol 2) – without presurgical orthopedic intervention. The three dimensional images of the maxillary arch were obtained before lip repair (stage 1) and at approximately 1 year of age (stage 2). Interstages changes for each group were evaluated using dependent t test and Wilcoxon test, and in the intergroup were used independent t test, and Mann–Whitney test. Results The comparison of the dimensional alterations of dental arches between the two protocols exhibited differences: in the stage 1, the intercanine was smaller in Group II; in the stage 2, the anterior cleft width, the intercanine and the anteroposterior cleft were smaller in Group II. Conclusion The results reported here suggest that the use of infant orthopedic plate as applied in protocol 1 may favor correct arch form establishment in infants with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate.

Oral health problems can influence people's Quality of Life (QoL) because of pain, discomfort, limitations, and other esthetics problems, affecting their social life, feeding, daily activities, and the individual's well-being. Objective: To compare oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children with and without oral clefts and their families. Materials and Methods: 121 children aged from 2 to 6 years, from both sexes, enrolled in the treatment routine of the Pediatric Dentistry Clinics of a Dental School and a Hospital for Cleft Treatment were divided into two groups: Group 1 - children with cleft lip and palate; Group 2 - children without cleft lip and palate. To evaluate the efficacy of an oral health educational programme in children with cleft lip and palate. The sample comprised 38 children with cleft lip and palate: Group 1—dental prophylaxis; Group 2—education and motivation instructions in oral health and plaque control. Children were evaluated during six appointments, at 30-day intervals. The Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) index was used to assess plaque control. This study aimed to analyze the dimensional alterations of the dental arches of 5-year-old children with cleft lip and palate and to compare these dimensions with children without oral clefts. One hundred twenty children were divided into the following groups: unilateral cleft lip (UCL), unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), cleft palate (CP), and control (C). A specific software was used to digitize the dental casts and perform the anthropometric analyses through the measurement of transversal linear intercanine and intermolar distances on the maxilla and mandible. The intergroup comparisons of the maxillary dimensions exhibited that the intercanine distances of groups C and UCL were statistically greater than that of groups UCLP and CP. The intermolar distance was significantly smaller in group UCLP than in the other groups. No statistically significant difference occurred in the mandibular intercanine and intermolar distance among groups. The analysis of the superposition of the maxillary over the mandibular transversal distances showed statistically significant differences among groups. This study showed that at 5-year old, the children with cleft involving the palate had more maxillary dimensional alterations than those without cleft palate.

The aim of this study was to measure and compare the dimensions of the dental arches on three-dimensional digital study models in children with and without cleft lip and palate before the primary surgery. The sample consisted of 223 digital models of children aged 3-9 months, divided into 5 groups: without craniofacial deformities, unilateral and bilateral incomplete cleft lip and alveolus, unilateral and bilateral complete cleft lip and alveolus, unilateral cleft lip and palate, and bilateral cleft lip and palate. Dental casts of the maxillary dental arches of the children were used. The dental casts underwent a process of scanning through 3D scanner and the measurements used for the correlation among groups were made on the scanned images. Statistical analysis was performed by t test and ANOVA followed by Tukey test. The results showed that the intercanine distance and anterior cleft width was wider in children with unilateral cleft lip and palate. The intertuberosity distances and posterior cleft width was wider in children with bilateral cleft lip and palate among the groups. Children with cleft lip and palate before the primary surgery had wider maxillary arch dimensions than the children without cleft lip and palate. O propósito deste trabalho foi mensurar e comparar as dimensões dos arcos dentários em modelos digitais tridimensionais de crianças com ou sem fissuras de lábio e palato antes das cirurgias primárias. A amostra foi composta de 223 modelos de gesso de crianças, de 3 a 9 meses, divididas em 5 grupos: sem deformidades craniofaciais, fissura pré-forame incompleta, fissura pré-forame completa, fissura transforame unilateral e fissura transforame bilateral. Modelos de gesso dos arcos dentários superiores das crianças foram utilizados para avaliação. Os modelos passaram por um processo de digitalização, por meio de escâner 3D e as medidas utilizadas para a correlação entre os grupos foram realizadas diretamente nas imagens escaneadas. A análise estatística foi realizada por meio do teste t e ANOVA seguido pelo teste de Tukey. Os resultados mostraram que a distância intercaninos e a amplitude anterior da fissura foram maiores nas crianças com fissura transforame unilateral. A distância intertuberosidades e a amplitude posterior da fissura foi maior nas com fissura transforame bilateral entre os grupos estudados. As crianças com fissura de lábio e palato apresentam as dimensões dos arcos maxilares maiores que as crianças sem fissura labiopalatina antes das cirurgias primárias.

Background: Individuals with cleft lip and palate have many anatomic and functional alterations compromising esthetics, hearing, speech, occlusion, and development/craniofacial growth. The rehabilitative treatment of these patients is very challenging and starts at birth aiming at the best treatment for all functional demands. This study aimed to evaluate the dimensional alterations of the dental arches of neonates with cleft lip and palate after two different primary surgical techniques. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 114 digital models of children aged from 3 to 36 months, with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate divided into two groups. Two different phases were evaluated: precheiloplasty and 1 year after palatoplasty. The evaluation was performed through the digital models of each child obtained by scanning digitalization (3D Scanner). Dental arches measurements were accomplished through Appliance Designer software. The following measurements were assessed: dental arch area, anterior amplitude of the cleft, total length of dental arch, intercanine distance, and intertuberosity distance. t-test was applied to compare differences between groups. Results: No statistically significant differences were observed between groups at precheiloplasty phase. At 1 year after palatoplasty, the groups differed in the total length of dental arch (P = 0.002), with greater values for Group I. Conclusion: This study suggests that the results of the different surgical techniques may alter the growth and development of the dental arches of neonates with cleft lip and palate.

This study aimed at monitoring the maxillary growth of children with cleft lip/palate in the first two years of life, and to evaluate the effects of primary surgeries on dental arch dimensions. The sample consisted of the three-dimensional digital models of 25 subjects with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and 29 subjects with isolated cleft palate (CP). Maxillary arch dimensions were measured at 3 months (before lip repair), 1 year (before palate repair), and at 2 years of age. Student’s ttest was used for comparison between the groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dimensional alterations of dental arches of cleft lip and palate children after cheiloplasty at two rehabilitation centers. The obtained measures were: intercanine distance, intertuberosity distance, anterior-posterior arch distance, anterior-posterior cleft length, anterior and posterior cleft width. The comparison between stages 1 and 2 was evaluated in group I, group II and between group I and II. The alterations between groups were verified by Independent t test. If the sample did not present a normal distribution, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were used. In Group I, the comparisons between stages 1 and 2 showed that the intertuberosity and anterior-posterior arch distance increased and the intercanine, anterior and posterior cleft distances decreased. In Group II, the comparisons between stages 1 and 2 showed that intertuberosity distance increased and intercanine, anteriorposterior cleft length distances, anterior and posterior cleft widths decreased. The comparison of the dimensional alterations of dental arches between the two rehabilitation centers exhibited differences: in the stage 1, the intercanine distance decreased in Group II; in the stage 2, the anterior cleft width, the intercanine distance and the anterior-posterior cleft length decreased in Group II, suggesting the superposition of maxillary segments; in Group II, there was a greater narrowing of the anterior and posterior cleft widths, suggesting that Hotz plate induced a more evenly and equidistant approximation of maxillary segments in Group I. It is worth emphasizing that more studies should be conduct to reduce the variability in treatment protocols for cleft lip and palate patients, thus assuring the best evidencebased treatment. O propósito deste estudo foi avaliar as alterações dimensionais dos arcos dentários de crianças com fissura de lábio e palato após a queiloplastia em dois centros de reabilitação. A amostra foi composta por 94 imagens digitais de modelos de gesso, e dividida em dois grupos: Grupo I - 23 crianças, tratas na Universidade de Zurique, com intervenção ortopédica pré-cirúrigica (placa de Holtz); Grupo II - 24 crianças tratadas no Hospital de Reabilitação de Anomalias Craniofaciais da Universidade de São Paulo, sem intervenção ortopédica pré-cirúrgica. As imagens tridimensionais dos modelos de gesso foram avaliados antes da queiloplastia (estágio 1) e com aproximadamente 1 ano de idade (estágio 2). As seguintes dimensões foram obtidas: comprimento anteroposterior da fissura, amplitude anterior da fissura, amplitude posterior da fissura, comprimento anteroposterior do arco, distância intercaninos e distância intertuberosidades. As comparações foram realizadas entre os estágios 1 e 2 e entre os grupos I e II. As diferenças entre os grupos foram verificadas pelo teste t independente, os testes de Wilcoxon e Mann-Whitney foram usados. No Grupo I, entre os estágios 1 e 2, as distâncias intertuberosidade aumentou e as distâncias intercaninos, distância anteroposterior da fissura, amplitude anterior e posterior da fissura diminuíram. A comparação entre as alterações dimensionais dos arcos dentários entre os dois centros de reabilitação apresentaram diferenças: no estágio 1, a distância intercaninos foi menor no Grupo II que no Grupo I; e no estágio 2, a amplitude anterior da fissura, a distância intercaninos e o comprimento anteroposterior da fissura foram menos no Grupo II que no Grupo I, sugerindo sobreposição dos segmentos maxilares. No Grupo II, houve maior estreitamento nas amplitudes anterior e posterior da fissura, sugerindo que a placa de Holtz no Grupo I induziu a aproximação dos segmentos maxilares de forma mais uniforme e equidistante. É importante salientar que mais estudos longitudinais precisam ser conduzidos a fim de reduzir a variabilidade de protocolos de tratamento em pacientes com fissura de lábio e palato, garantindo o melhor tratamento baseado em evidências científicas.

Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the impact of malocclusion on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in Brazilian children with non-syndromic oral clefts at tertiary craniofacial center. Material and methods: Sixty-nine children with non-syndromic oral clefts, aged between 8 and 10 years, were selected and divided into groups according to the cleft type: Group 1 – Children with complete unilateral cleft lip and alveolus; Group 2 – Children with unilateral cleft lip and palate; Group 3 – Children with cleft palate. Each child answered the Child Perceptions Questionnaire8-10 (CPQ 8-10) which is a multiple-choice questionnaire, with 29 questions on the impact of oral diseases on the OHRQoL. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the dental arch area and occlusion of children with cleft lip and complete unilateral palate at 5 years using the Atack occlusal index. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 124 digital models of children with cleft lip and unilateral palate. The measurement of the area of the dental arches was obtained by Stereophotogrammetry System Software. Atack occlusal index analyzed the occlusion on digitized dental models. The Interclass Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze the intra-examiner reproducibility and the Spearman correlation coefficient verified the correlation between the dental arch area and occlusal index. Results: For intra-examiner agreement analysis, measurements of the 1st and 2nd measurements of half of the sample were obtained 15 days after the first measurement. The ICC showed high agreement (0.83). The Atack occlusal index presented with a prevalence of index 4 (34.64%). Regarding the measurements of area (cm2), the median value was 7.28, minimum value 4.90 and a maximum 11.89. The correlation between the dental arch area and occlusal index was negative (-0.35). Conclusion: The occlusal index has no correlation with the area, which means that the palate area is not a determinant in the Atack occlusal index Objetivo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a área do arco dentário e a oclusão das crianças com fissura de lábio e palato aos 5 anos utilizando o índice de Atack. Material e Métodos: A amostra foi composta por 124 modelos digitais de crianças com fissura completa de lábio e palato unilateral. A medida da área dos arcos dentários foi obtida pelo Software do Sistema de Estereofotogrametria. O índice oclusal de Atack foi utilizado para analisar a oclusão nos modelos digitalizados. O coeficiente de correlação interclasse avaliou a reprodutibilidade intraexaminador e o coeficiente de correlação de Spearman verificou a correlação entre a área da arcada dentária e o índice oclusal. Resultados: Para análise da concordância intraexaminador, as medidas da 1ª e 2ª medidas da metade da amostra foram obtidas 15 dias após a primeira medição. O ICC mostrou alta concordância (0,83). O índice oclusal de Atack apresentou prevalência de índice 4 (34,64%). Em relação às medidas de área (cm2), o valor mediano foi de 7,28, valor mínimo de 4,90 e máximo de 11,89. A correlação entre a área da arcada dentária e o índice oclusal foi negativa (-0,35).
