With the rise in popularity of different human-centred applications using 3D reconstruction data, the problem of generating photo-realistic models has become an important task. In a multiview acquisition system, particularly for large indoor scenes, the acquisition conditions will differ along the environment, causing colour differences between captures and unappealing visual artefacts in the produced models. We propose a novel neural-based approach to colour correction for indoor 3D reconstruction. It is a lightweight and efficient approach that can be used to harmonize colour from sparse captures over complex indoor scenes. Our approach uses a fully connected deep neural network to learn an implicit representation of the colour in 3D space, while capturing camera-dependent effects. We then leverage this continuous function as reference data to estimate the required transformations to regenerate pixels in each capture. Experiments to evaluate the proposed method on several scenes of the MP3D dataset show that it outperforms other relevant state-of-the-art approaches.

Background: The domain of Biomedical and Health Informatics (BMHI) lies in the intersection of multiple disciplines, making it difficult to define and, consequently, characterise the workforce, training needs and requirements in this domain. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, there isn’t any aggregated information about the higher education programmes in BMHI currently being delivered in Portugal, and which knowledge, skills, and competencies these programmes aim to develop. Aim: Our aim is to map BMHI teaching in Portugal. More specifically, our objective is to identify and characterise the: a.) programmes delivering relevant BMHI teaching; b.) geographical distribution and chronological evolution of such programmes; and c.) credit distribution and weight. Methods: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study to systematically identify all programmes currently delivering any core BMHI modules in Portugal. Our population included all graduate-level programmes being delivered in the 2021/2022 academic year in any Portuguese higher education institution. Results: We identified 23 programmes delivering relevant teaching in BMHI in Portugal. Of these, eight (35%) were classified as dedicated educational programmes in BMHI, mostly delivered in polytechnic institutes at a master’s level (5; 63%) and located preferentially in the northern part of the country (7). Currently, there are four programmes with potential for accreditation but still requiring some workload increase in certain areas in order to be eligible.

The current study analyzed university students’ purpose in life in the context of service-learning (SL) courses developed in a university in Portugal. Briefly, 112 graduation and master students, from different areas, involved in 15 SL courses (82 female; 73.2%; age ranging from 18 to 51; M = 23; SD = 6.51) participated in this study. Questionnaires included an open-ended question about students’ purpose in life. Four closed-ended questions were included to understand student’s perceptions of change in their purpose in life arising from the SL courses and other perceptions about their SL course. Qualitative data were analyzed via content analysis with NVivo. Results indicated that students’ purpose in life ranged from social-related goals, such as helping or caring for others, to personal-related goals, including personal growth and well-being. Most of the students (71.4%) reported that their purpose in life changed moderately or a lot after participating in a SL course. Findings are discussed in light of the literature, identifying implications for the development of SL courses in higher education, considering the contribution of this pedagogic methodology to the definition and reconfiguration of young people’s purpose in life.

With the start of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the global education system has a faced immense challenges and disruptions resulting in and the necessity for an immediate redesign of teaching and learning in the school context. Face-to-face classroom instruction had to be replaced by ‘emergency remote teaching’, requiring teacher to adapt their daily routines to a new and unprecedented educational reality. Researchers and policymakers worldwide have agreed that, despite the fact that efforts were made to immediately adapt to emergency remote teaching, disadvantaged and vulnerable students may be especially at risk in emergency remote teaching. Given the differences in schooling organization across countries during the COVID-19 pandemic it can be expected that teachers performed inclusive instructional practices significantly different. Against the unpredictable situation, cross-country research has been urgently required to provide data that could inform education policy. Thus, this study explored teachers’ perceptions of supporting at risk students during the first COVID-19 school closures, as well as examining teachers’ inclusive teaching practices in three countries: Germany, Austria and Portugal. ANOVA results revealed important country differences. In general, it appears that teachers in Germany and Austria reported to have implemented less practices to address vulnerable and at-risk students compared to Portuguese teachers. Implications of the results, as well as further lines of research are outlined.

INTRODUÇÃO: A doença cística da adventícia é uma condição vascular rara e que afeta na maioria dos casos a artéria poplítea. Habitualmente cursa com claudicação intermitente durante o exercício. CASO CLÍNICO: Descreve-se um caso clínico de uma doente com doença cística da adventícia da artéria poplítea. A apresentação clínica foi sob a forma de claudicação intermitente gemelar direita. Procedeu-se ao tratamento cirúrgico, por abordagem posterior, com exérese do quisto mantendo a integridade da parede luminal. Assim, não se verificou a necessidade de reconstrução arterial. DISCUSSÃO: Possíveis etiologias incluem traumatismo, doença sistémica, doença sinovial ou alterações do desenvolvimento embrionário. O tratamento depende do vaso afetado e a remoção do quisto com preservação ou substituição arterial tem apresentado resultados promissores. O seguimento a longo prazo é mandatório, atendendo ao risco de recidiva.

Iatrogenic injury of the inferior vena cava is very uncommon but can lead to serious devastating sequelae. This can occur during reoperative or congenital surgery but also during routine cardiac surgery. We have presented a very rare case of a partial obstruction of the inferior vena cava–right atrium junction after multiple cardiac surgeries, which was treated using an endovascular percutaneous approach.

To fully leverage the benefits of augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) in supporting users, it is crucial to establish a consistent and well-defined situated visualization (SV) model. SV encompasses visualizations that adapt based on context, considering the relevant visualizations within their physical display environment. Recognizing the potential of SV in various domains such as collaborative tasks, situational awareness, decision-making, assistance, training, and maintenance, AR/MR is well-suited to facilitate these scenarios by providing additional data and context-driven visualization techniques. While some perspectives on the SV model have been proposed, such as space, time, place, activity, and community, a comprehensive and up-to-date systematization of the entire SV model is yet to be established. Therefore, there is a pressing need for a more comprehensive and updated description of the SV model within the AR/MR framework to foster research discussions.

Introdução – Uma das abordagens terapêuticas no carcinoma do pulmão de não pequenas células (CPNPC) é a quimioterapia e radioterapia (RT) concomitante. O planeamento de RT pode ser realizado com base em diferentes técnicas de imagem, existindo vários fatores que podem influenciar a qualidade das mesmas, nomeadamente o movimento respiratório. Objetivos – Este estudo tem como objetivos: 1) avaliar a importância da 4DCT e da 4DPET/CT para a correção de movimento e definição do volume alvo no planeamento de RT para CPNPC; e 2) comparar a delimitação de volumes entre as técnicas PET/CT, 4DCT e 4DPET/CT, identificando as suas vantagens e limitações. Métodos – Revisão da literatura, recorrendo-se à metodologia PRISMA para a seleção de artigos nas bases de dados PubMed e Science Direct e outras fontes (b-on e Google Scholar). Foram considerados artigos publicados entre janeiro de 2014 e janeiro de 2020. Foram comparados volumes delimitados através de técnicas 3D e 4D, avaliando o impacto do movimento respiratório na aquisição de imagens e posterior planeamento de RT. Resultados – Obtiveram-se 230 artigos, mas apenas cinco foram elegíveis para estudo. As técnicas 4DCT e 4DPET/CT apresentaram melhores resultados, diminuindo os artefactos de movimento. Os volumes delimitados pelas várias técnicas em estudo foram semelhantes, apesar de se registarem pequenas variações quando a técnica 4D não é aplicada. Conclusão – Atualmente a 4DPET/CT apresenta melhores resultados na delimitação de volumes alvo para o planeamento de RT do que a técnica 4DCT.

This work presents a novel framework for web-based environment-aware rendering and interaction in augmented reality based on WebXR and three.js. It aims at accelerating the development of device-agnostic Augmented Reality (AR) applications. The solution allows for a realistic rendering of 3D elements, handles geometry occlusion, casts shadows of virtual objects onto real surfaces, and provides physics interaction with real-world objects. Unlike most existing state-of-the-art systems that are built to run on a specific hardware configuration, the proposed solution targets the web environment and is designed to work on a vast range of devices and configurations. Our solution can use monocular camera setups with depth data estimated by deep neural networks or, when available, use higher-quality depth sensors (e.g., LIDAR, structured light) that provide a more accurate perception of the environment. To ensure consistency in the rendering of the virtual scene a physically based rendering pipeline is used, in which physically correct attributes are associated with each 3D object, which, combined with lighting information captured by the device, enables the rendering of AR content matching the environment illumination. All these concepts are integrated and optimized into a pipeline capable of providing a fluid user experience even on middle-range devices. The solution is distributed as an open-source library that can be integrated into existing and new web-based AR projects. The proposed framework was evaluated and compared in terms of performance and visual features with two state-of-the-art alternatives.

Maintaining appropriate home rehabilitation programs after stroke, with proper adherence and remote monitoring is a challenging task. Virtual reality (VR) - based serious games could be a strategy used in telerehabilitation (TR) to engage patients in an enjoyable and therapeutic approach. The aim of this review was to analyze the background and quality of clinical research on this matter to guide future research. The review was based on research material obtained from PubMed and Cochrane up to April 2020 using the PRISMA approach. The use of VR serious games has shown evidence of efficacy on upper limb TR after stroke, but the evidence strength is still low due to a limited number of randomized controlled trials (RCT), a small number of participants involved, and heterogeneous samples. Although this is a promising strategy to complement conventional rehabilitation, further investigation is needed to strengthen the evidence of effectiveness and support the dissemination of the developed solutions.

Introduction: Over the past few decades management options of the acute limb ischaemia (ALI) have changed. Nowadays, catheter direct thrombolysis (CDT) is commonly used as an alternative to surgery in immediate management of the ALI and may offer certain advantages over surgery in appropriately selected patients. Objective: To evaluate CDT data for the treatment of acute ischaemia in lower extremity in different aetiologies. Materials and methods: All consecutive patients who underwent CDT for acute limb ischaemia in our vascular surgery department, between 1 January 2011 to 31 August 2017 were identified and reviewed. Outcome measures included primary patency at 30 days and one year, haemorrhagic complications, major amputation and mortality. Results: In total, 128 limbs from 106 patients were included. The median follow-up was 14 months [range: 6–31 months]. The aetiologies of ischaemia included in the study were native artery thrombosis, PTFE and GSV bypass thrombosis, intra-stent thrombosis, popliteal aneurysm and entrapment thrombosis and arterial embolism. The Stages of ALI according to the Rutherford classification were 12,5% in class I, 77,3% in class IIa and 10,2% in class IIb. Primary patency rates were 71.3% and 47.8% at one and three years, respectively. The requirement for re-intervention was 27.6% in the native artery thrombosis group, 65.2% in the PTFE graft thrombosis group, and 18.2% in the intra-stent thrombosis group. No re-interventions were verified for popliteal aneurysm or arterial embolism aetiologies. The overall amputation free survival was 83.3% at 27 months, and the cumulative incidence of death was 10.1% at 32 months. Complications occurred in 40 interventions (31.3%); the majority comprised minor bleeding from the access site, and one death due to haemorrhagic stroke. Conclusions: CDT although associated with an increased risk of bleeding complications, it is a feasible and safe therapy, with clinical outcomes that may reduce the need for open surgical treatment in many patients. Our findings support this therapeutic approach as a valid option in ALI, in different aetiologies.

Texture mapping can be defined as the colorization of a 3D mesh using one or multiple images. In the case of multiple images, this process often results in textured meshes with unappealing visual artifacts, known as texture seams, caused by the lack of color similarity between the images. The main goal of this work is to create textured meshes free of texture seams by color correcting all the images used. We propose a novel color-correction approach, called sequential pairwise color correction, capable of color correcting multiple images from the same scene, using a pairwise-based method. This approach consists of sequentially color correcting each image of the set with respect to a reference image, following color-correction paths computed from a weighted graph. The color-correction algorithm is integrated with a texture-mapping pipeline that receives uncorrected images, a 3D mesh, and point clouds as inputs, producing color-corrected images and a textured mesh as outputs. Results show that the proposed approach outperforms several state-of-the-art color-correction algorithms, both in qualitative and quantitative evaluations. The approach eliminates most texture seams, significantly increasing the visual quality of the textured meshes.

Augmented Reality (AR) solutions are emerging in multiple scenarios of application as Industry 4.0 takes shape. In particular, for remote collaboration, flexible mechanisms such as authoring tools can be used to generate instructions and assist human operators as they experience increased complexity in their daily tasks. In addition to the traditional handicap of ensuring instructions can be intuitively created without having to understand complicated AR concepts, another relevant topic is the fact that the quality of said instructions is not properly analyzed prior to the tools being evaluated. This means that the characteristics of the visual content are not adequately assessed beforehand. Hence, it is essential to be aware of the cognitive workload associated with AR instructions to assert if they can be easily understood and accepted before being deployed in real-world scenarios. To address this, we focused on AR during sessions of remote guidance. Based on a participatory process with domain experts from the industry sector, a prototype for creating AR-based instructions was developed, and a user study with two parts was conducted: (1) first, a set of step-by-step instructions was produced, and their visual characteristics were evaluated by 129 participants based on a set of relevant dimensions; (2) afterward, these instructions were used by nine participants to understand if they could be used to assist on-site collaborators during real-life remote maintenance tasks. The results suggest that the AR instructions offer low visual complexity and considerable visual impact, clarity, and directed focus, thus improving situational understanding and promoting task resolution.

This work proposes an augmented reality serious game (ARSG) for supporting individuals with motor disabilities while controlling robotic wheelchairs. A racing track was used as the game narrative; this included restriction areas, static and dynamic virtual objects, as well as obstacles and signs. To experience the game, a prior configuration of the environment, made through a smartphone or a computer, was required. Furthermore, a visualization tool was developed to exhibit user performance while using the ARSG. Two user studies were conducted with 10 and 20 participants, respectively, to compare (1) how different devices enable configuring the ARSG, and (2) different tracking capabilities, i.e., methods used to place virtual content on the real-world environment while the user interacts with the game and controls the wheelchair in the physical space: C1—motion tracking using cloud anchors; C2—offline motion tracking. Results suggest that configuring the environment with the computer is more efficient and accurate, in contrast to the smartphone, which is characterized as more engaging. In addition, condition C1 stood out as more accurate and robust, while condition C2 appeared to be easier to use.

This paper presents an evaluation and comparison of interaction methods for the configuration and visualization of pervasive Augmented Reality (AR) experiences using two different platforms: desktop and mobile. AR experiences consist of the enhancement of real-world environments by superimposing additional layers of information, real-time interaction, and accurate 3D registration of virtual and real objects. Pervasive AR extends this concept through experiences that are continuous in space, being aware of and responsive to the user’s context and pose. Currently, the time and technical expertise required to create such applications are the main reasons preventing its widespread use. As such, authoring tools which facilitate the development and configuration of pervasive AR experiences have become progressively more relevant. Their operation often involves the navigation of the real-world scene and the use of the AR equipment itself to add the augmented information within the environment. The proposed experimental tool makes use of 3D scans from physical environments to provide a reconstructed digital replica of such spaces for a desktop-based method, and to enable positional tracking for a mobile-based one. While the desktop platform represents a non-immersive setting, the mobile one provides continuous AR in the physical environment. Both versions can be used to place virtual content and ultimately configure an AR experience. The authoring capabilities of the different platforms were compared by conducting a user study focused on evaluating their usability. Although the AR interface was generally considered more intuitive, the desktop platform shows promise in several aspects, such as remote configuration, lower required effort, and overall better scalability.

In the last decade, smartphone use increased exponentially among the population mainly among adolescents and young adults. Today, people are constantly clinging to the smartphone in many situations of their life, even though this activity can have physical and psychological negative consequences. Through the popularization of smartphones, a new dependency was born, nomophobia, defined as the fear of being away from one’s smartphone. This study analyzes the propensity of young adults (18–24 years old) towards nomophobia and lifestyle. A sample of 495 participants showed a positive and moderate correlation between nomophobia and psychopathological symptoms. Interpersonal sensitivity, obsession-compulsion, and the number of hours of smartphone use per day were identified as strong predictors of nomophobia. Results show that smartphone use, and feelings of personal inadequacy and inferiority are relevant when explaining nomophobia.

Texture mapping of 3D models using multiple images often results in textured meshes with unappealing visual artifacts known as texture seams. These artifacts can be more or less visible, depending on the color similarity between the used images. The main goal of this work is to produce textured meshes free of texture seams through a process of color correcting all images of the scene. To accomplish this goal, we propose two contributions to the state-of-the-art of color correction: a pairwise-based methodology, capable of color correcting multiple images from the same scene; the application of 3D information from the scene, namely meshes and point clouds, to build a filtering procedure, in order to produce a more reliable spatial registration between images, thereby increasing the robustness of the color correction procedure. We also present a texture mapping pipeline that receives uncorrected images, an untextured mesh, and point clouds as inputs, producing a final textured mesh and color corrected images as output. Results include a comparison with four other color correction approaches. These show that the proposed approach outperforms all others, both in qualitative and quantitative metrics. The proposed approach enhances the visual quality of textured meshes by eliminating most of the texture seams.

Goal: The main goal of this research is to analyse the behaviour of a set of ten lot-sizing methods applied to different application scenarios, within the context of more traditional MRP-based manufacturing environments and on JIT/ Kanbans oriented ones. Design/Methodology/Approach: After an extended literature review, a quantitative research method is used to provide a comparative analysis on the performance of the lot-sizing methods under different simulated application scenarios, with variations in demand and peaks of seasonality. Moreover, a final summary provides the error deviations for lot-sizing methods regarding increases in demand variations and seasonality indexes. Results: The study analyses lot-sizing methods and discusses benefits and risks associated to its use in application scenarios marked by a considerable variation in demand or peaks in seasonality. Limitations of the investigation: As the application scenarios did not explore variations in the ordering and stock holding costs, further analysis including these kinds of variations is encouraged. Practical implications: The findings of this research enable the enhancement of the conscience of industrial practitioners, regarding the selection of best suited lot-sizing methods for being applied on each kind of manufacturing scenario, regarding MRP or JIT/ Kanban environments. Originality/Value: Given the diversity of the existing lot-sizing methods, for instance, the heuristic ones, authors can find it quite difficult to select appropriate methods for solving their problems for each kind of application scenario. Therefore, the present study can provide useful knowledge to better support decision making in the lot-sizing domain.

The creation of a textured 3D mesh from a set of RGD-D images often results in textured meshes that yield unappealing visual artifacts. The main cause is the misalignments between the RGB-D images due to inaccurate camera pose estimations. While there are many works that focus on improving those estimates, the fact is that this is a cumbersome problem, in particular due to the accumulation of pose estimation errors. In this work, we conjecture that camera poses estimation methodologies will always display non-neglectable errors. Hence, the need for more robust texture mapping methodologies, capable of producing quality textures even in considerable camera misalignments scenarios. To this end, we argue that use of the depth data from RGB-D images can be an invaluable help to confer such robustness to the texture mapping process. Results show that the complete texture mapping procedure proposed in this paper is able to significantly improve the quality of the produced textured 3D meshes.

Faculty development is essential to promote pedagogical innovation and the transformation of teaching practices. The faculty development model presented in this study was guided by three research questions about how scholars engage in institutionally held training opportunities for professional development; how scholars engage with and collaborate within learning communities/communities of practice; and the implications and perceived impacts of such dynamics for the conceptualization of faculty development approaches aimed at community development. The results highlight community development as an interdisciplinary opportunity to reflect, learn, diversify, rethink, envision, and be intentional about pedagogy.

Systems composed of multiple sensors for exteroceptive perception are becoming increasingly common, such as mobile robots or highly monitored spaces. However, to combine and fuse those sensors to create a larger and more robust representation of the perceived scene, the sensors need to be properly registered among them, that is, all relative geometric transformations must be known. This calibration procedure is challenging as, traditionally, human intervention is required in variate extents. This paper proposes a nearly automatic method where the best set of geometric transformations among any number of sensors is obtained by processing and combining the individual pairwise transformations obtained from an experimental method. Besides eliminating some experimental outliers with a standard criterion, the method exploits the possibility of obtaining better geometric transformations between all pairs of sensors by combining them within some restrictions to obtain a more precise transformation, and thus a better calibration. Although other data sources are possible, in this approach, 3D point clouds are obtained by each sensor, which correspond to the successive centers of a moving ball its field of view. The method can be applied to any sensors able to detect the ball and the 3D position of its center, namely, LIDARs, mono cameras (visual or infrared), stereo cameras, and TOF cameras. Results demonstrate that calibration is improved when compared to methods in previous works that do not address the outliers problem and, depending on the context, as explained in the results section, the multi-pairwise technique can be used in two different methodologies to reduce uncertainty in the calibration process.

This study presents a review about what great figures of history thought about the existence of God and a worldwide comparison between religious believers and non-believers using the World Social Survey (WSS) database, comprising a sample of 90,350 respondents. Results reveal that most people believe in the existence of God and consider that God is important and very important in their lives. Believers are mainly women; younger than non-believers; mostly married; less educated than non-believers; most of whom work, though fewer hours than non-believers; and perceive themselves as belonging to the middle class. There are more believers with no formal education than non-believers. The diversity of religious believers and non-believers, visible in the perspectives of humanity’s important personalities, mirrors the diversity of ordinary people towards the relevance of God. The results obtained point to a correlation between the belief in God and the studied sociodemographic variables but also suggest that the difference between believers and non-believers may be artificial, having resulted from the adopted methodology. The relationship found between being a believer and defending traditional values also corroborates with previous studies, suggesting that humankind needs God to give meaning to the world around them, namely, in morality and conduct terms.

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction methods generate a 3D textured model from the combination of data from several captures. As such, the geometrical transformations between these captures are required. The process of computing or refining these transformations is referred to as alignment. It is often a difficult problem to handle, in particular due to a lack of accuracy in the matching of features. We propose an optimization framework that takes advantage of fiducial markers placed in the scene. Since these markers are robustly detected, the problem of incorrect matching of features is overcome. The proposed procedure is capable of enhancing the 3D models created using consumer level RGB-D hand-held cameras, reducing visual artefacts caused by misalignments. One problem inherent to this solution is that the scene is polluted by the markers. Therefore, a tool was developed to allow their removal from the texture of the scene. Results show that our optimization framework is able to significantly reduce alignment errors between captures, which results in visually appealing reconstructions. Furthermore, the markers used to enhance the alignment are seamlessly removed from the final model texture.

Na atualidade, o cancro do pulmão apresenta uma elevada incidência na população, correspondendo-lhe igualmente uma grande taxa de mortalidade. Associado a esta patologia, um dos principais sintomas é a dispneia, caracterizada como desconforto respiratório que limita a realização das atividades diárias podendo culminar em isolamento social. A presente revisão integrativa tem como objetivos identificar as estratégias utilizadas para o controlo da dispneia e clarificar as intervenções do enfermeiro no controlo da mesma, no doente com cancro do pulmão. De forma a atingi-los, efetuaram-se pesquisas em bases de dados científicas, das quais, como base nos critérios de inclusão/exclusão definidos, resultaram nove artigos. Segundo informação científica analisada, inferiu-se que as estratégias mais utilizadas são os métodos farmacológicos e não farmacológicos, sendo a intervenção do enfermeiro fundamental na avaliação e controlo da dispneia, conjugando diferentes estratégias que melhorem a qualidade de vida do indivíduo. Desta revisão, evidencia-se a necessidade da realização de estudos que clarifiquem as controvérsias acerca dos métodos farmacológicos e aprofundem o conhecimento acerca das estratégias não farmacológicas e seus benefícios.

The XPRESS project introduces a completely new scalable concept of a manufactronic networked factory, which is composed by a co-ordinated team of specialized autonomous objects (Manufactrons), each knowing how to do a certain process optimally. This knowledge based concept integrated the complete chain: production configuration (decrease of ramp-up time of at least 50%), multi-variant production line (varying types and volumes on a single line) and 100% quality monitoring. The manufactronic networked architecture allows continuous process improvement, and will be able to anticipate and to respond to rapidly changing consumer needs, producing high-quality products in adequate quantities while reducing costs. This concept is demonstrated in the automotive, aeronautics and electrical industry but can be transferred to nearly all production processes.

The beaches of Espírito Santo encompass the most important nesting sites of the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758), in the South Atlantic Ocean. Previous research has shown that, unlike other nesting sites in Brazil, Espírito Santo harbors a large percentage of male individuals, which play an important role in maintaining the equilibrium of C. caretta populations in the South Atlantic. During the 2006/2007 reproductive season, four beaches presenting considerable geologic differences were monitored. The sedimentary features of the nesting sites (mineral composition, albedo, and grain size), nesting dates, and clutch sizes were correlated with hatching success and incubation duration. Results show that hatching success is mostly affected by clutch size _ and to a lesser extent, by grain size and albedo. Incubation duration is more sensitive to the characteristics of the nesting site, being affected by nesting date, clutch size, mineral composition, and grain size. However, results from one nesting site cannot be generalized or extended to other sites, because sediment properties are functions of the geological framework of the area and the interaction among environmental variables is far too complex. Our results reveal the importance of protecting areas with large geologic diversity, since sedimentary characteristics may affect incubation duration and embryo survival. Our findings are important in the scope of management activities, as nest transfer may alter nest microenvironment, impacting incubation duration and hatching success.

Essas diferentes linhas temáticas, os fios da trama das expressões artísticas e religiosas do povo brasileiro são o assunto deste artigo, que procura analisar formas culturais caracterizadas pela hibridação, as quais transitam muitas vezes na ambiguidade entre resistência e aceitação de um padrão cultural dominante. O dinamismo dos arranjos de um certo número de motivos condutores recorrentes no âmbito da cultura de tradição oral brasileira nos leva a especular sobre os processos de formação de suas práticas artísticas, bem como sobre sua circulação num país de dimensões continentais.In the Brazilian popular chants, dances and festivities one can detect different motifs and patterns of a tissue. It is interesting to investigate and follow each of these threads that constitute this weft, grouping them according to their texture or coloring. These different thematic lines, threads of the weft of artistic and religious expressions of the Brazilian people are the theme of this article, which intends to analyze cultural forms characterized by hybridization which often resides in the ambiguity between resistance and acceptance of a dominant cultural pattern. The dynamism of these arrangements makes us speculate about the formation or constitution of these artistic practices, as well as their circulation, trying to investigate about the processes that were responsible for the broadcasting of these characteristics and similarities in such an enormous country.

A common problem when trying to identify the sex of hatchling turtles is that juveniles are not obviously externally dimorphic and current techniques to identify sex are often invasive. In this paper, 300 eggs of Podocnemis expansa from Bananal Island, state of Tocantins (Brazil), were incubated at constant temperatures. The carapaces of the hatchlings were photographed and subjected to geometric morphometric analysis. The hatchlings were subsequently euthanized and had their gonads removed for sex determination. The pivotal temperature of P. expansa was 33.5ºC, confirming that this species has the highest pivotal temperature among reptiles. Geometric morphometric analysis of the shape of the carapace proved efficient in differentiating the sex of the hatchlings and confirmed that this methodology can be efficient for studies that need to ascertain the sex ratio in P. expansa hatchlings.

Os aspectos ecológicos relacionados à reprodução das tartarugas e de outros répteis que apresentam determinação sexual dependente da temperatura de incubação desempenham um papel crucial no equilíbrio das populações. Nestas espécies a razão sexual dos filhotes é controlada pela temperatura a que os ovos são submetidos durante a incubação. Entender como as características do local da desova afetam a temperatura da incubação é essencial para que se possa argüir sobre os fatores que controlam a ecologia, a reprodução e a distribuição geográfica das tartarugas. Este trabalho de revisão aborda o modo de reprodução das tartarugas e a maneira como a reprodução é afetada pelo meio físico.The ecological aspects related to the reproduction of turtles and other reptiles, which present incubation temperature-dependent sex determination, play a crucial role in their population equilibrium. For such species, the sex ratio of hatchlings is controlled by the nest temperature during incubation. To understand how the nest site characteristics affect temperature is essential for considering the factors which control the ecology, reproduction and distribution of turtles. In this paper, we have made a review on the way turtles reproduce and how the physical environment affects reproduction.

Para as espécies de tartaruga que apresentam a determinação sexual dependente da temperatura da incubação o local e o momento da desova, exercem influências que vão além da definição do sexo dos embriões. A influência do local da desova se estende a todo o desenvolvimento embrionário afetando o comportamento e o tamanho dos filhotes. O momento em que ocorre a desova trará conseqüências ao ambiente térmico dos ninhos à medida que a temperatura e a umidade variam ao longo do ano. A umidade será decisiva nas trocas hídricas e gasosas entre os ovos e o meio afetando a absorção do vitelo e o crescimento dos embriões. As cheias e os alagamentos são importantes fatores de perda de ninhos nas espécies de tartaruga de água doce. A desova no momento adequado possibilita uma incubação segura, sem a interferência de alagamentos dos ninhos e conseqüente morte dos embriões. A predação dos ninhos varia de acordo com o local da desova, o tipo e a abundância de predadores e a profundidade da câmara de ovos. A escolha de pontos de desova no interior da vegetação, onde a taxa de predação é geralmente menor, nem sempre é a estratégia mais frequentemente adotada pelas tartarugas, uma vez que esse procedimento pode levar a uma maior exposição das fêmeas aos predadores, à diminuição do sucesso da eclosão ou a alterações na razão sexual provocadas por diferenças na temperatura da incubação.Turtle species in which the sex determination is dependent of incubation temperature, the nest site and the laying moment will affect more than embryo sex determination. The influence of the laying site extends all over the embryonic development, affecting hatching weight and size. The time of the egg-laying will bring consequences to the nest thermal environment, as the temperature and humidity change throughout the year. The humidity will be decisive in gaseous and hydric exchanges between eggs and the environment, affecting yolk absorption and embryo growth. Floods and inundation are important factors related to nest loss in freshwater turtle species. Egg laying at the appropriated time makes a safe incubation possible, without the interference of nest inundation and subsequent embryo death. The nest predation varies according to the egg-laying site, type and abundance of predator and nest depth. The choice of areas in the middle of vegetation, where the predation rate is generally smaller, is not always the most used strategy by turtles, since this procedure can decrease the hatching success or provoke changes in sex ratio.

Os autores tentam investigar as motivações dos adultos para a aprendizagem ao longo da vida através de um estudo exploratório com uma amostra não aleatória. Através de uma metodologia quantitativa, foram avaliadas as motivações (Importância da aprendizagem, Valor intrínseco da aprendizagem e Prazer pela aprendizagem) e participações em aprendizagem (actualmente, nos últimos dois anos ou há mais de três anos) em função do sexo, idade e escolaridade.

A large population of the giant Amazon river turtle (Podocnemis expansa) nests along the beaches of the Crixás-Açu River in the central western region of Brazil. In spite of the existence of several point bars in the area, only a selected group of beaches is used for nesting by P. expansa. Geological aspects, such as river width and depth, beach height above 200 cm with sandy sediments, were indispensable for the choice of these nesting sites. The relatively reduced dimensions of the point bars and the great number of turtles, which nest in the same local, contributed to the existence of a high nest concentration. The rapid rise of the Crixás-Açu River caused the flooding of the beaches and the drowning of hatchlings and embryos. It is estimated that nearly all the nests were lost. The height of the nesting place and the time of flooding related to the incubation period are decisive in embryo survivorship. The Retiro, Júnior, Assombrado and Limoeiro beaches, which are situated at heights of 183 to 310 cm, were inundated on 8 November 2000. The Barreira Branca beach, with a height of up to 380 cm was completely inundated on 13 December 2000. All of these beaches were flooded before the hatchlings emerged.Uma das maiores populações de tartaruga-da-amazônia (Podocnemis expansa) da região Centro-Oeste do Brasil nidifica ao longo das praias do rio Crixás-Açu no estado de Goiás. Apesar de existirem inúmeras barras em pontal na área, apenas um seleto grupo de praias foi eleito como ponto de nidificação pela tartaruga-da-amazônia. Aspectos geológicos, tais como um substrato constituído por sedimentos arenosos, a presença de locais amplos e profundos no rio, e patamares elevados, acima de 200 cm foram imprescindíveis à escolha dos pontos de desova. As dimensões relativamente reduzidas das barras em pontal e o grande número de indivíduos a desovarem no mesmo local fazem com que haja uma alta concentração de ninhos. A rápida ascensão do nível do rio Crixás-Açu, a partir de 25 de outubro de 2000, provocou o alagamento das praias e o afogamento de filhotes e embriões. Estima-se que quase todas os ninhos foram perdidos por este motivo. A altura do local de desova, em relação ao nível do rio, exerceu um papel crucial sobre o momento do alagamento das praias, mas foi incapaz de assegurar a conclusão do período de incubação e saída dos filhotes dos ninhos. As praias do Retiro, Júnior, Assombrado e Limoeiro, situadas a uma altura que variou de 183 a 310 cm, foram alagadas em 8 de novembro. A praia da Barreira Branca, com altura de até 380 cm foi completamente alagada a partir de 13 de dezembro.

The distribution of the nests of Podocnemis expansa (Amazon turtle) and Podocnemis unifilis (yellow-spotted side neck turtle) along the point bars of the Javaés River in Bananal Island, demonstrates a clear preference of these chelonians for differentiated geological environments, in respect to the morphology, grain size or height of the nests in relation to the level of the river. The topographical distribution and the differences in the grain size of the sediments that compose the point bars of the river, originated from the multiple sedimentary processes, and make possible the creation and separation of different nesting environments. Each turtle species takes advantage of the place that presents physiographic characteristics appropriate to the hatching success of their eggs. The superposition of the P. expansa and P. unifilis nest placement areas is rare. The P. expansa nests are concentrated on the central portion of the beaches where successive depositional sedimentary events produced sandy banks more than 3.3 m above the river water level. The P. unifilis nests are distributed preferentially in the upstream and downstream portions along the point bars where the sandy deposits rarely surpass 1.5 m at the moment of laying. P. expansa nests located on the beaches of fine to medium sized sand hatch in a mean of 68 days, while those incubated on beaches of medium to coarse sand size take a mean of 54 days to hatch.A distribuição das covas de Podocnemis expansa (tartaruga-da-amazônia) e Podocnemis unifilis (tracajá) ao longo das barras em pontal do rio Javaés na Ilha do Bananal, mostra uma clara preferência destes quelônios por ambientes geológicos diferenciados, seja em relação à morfologia, constituição granulométrica ou altura das covas em relação ao nível do rio. A compartimentação topográfica e as diferenças no tamanho dos sedimentos que compõem as barras em pontal, oriundas de processos sedimentares múltiplos, possibilita a criação e separação de ambientes de nidificação distintos. Cada espécie de quelônio se aproveita do local que apresenta características fisiográficas apropriadas à incubação de seus ovos, sendo rara a superposição das áreas de nidificação de P. expansa e P. unifilis. As covas de P. expansa concentram-se na porção central das praias onde sucessivos eventos de deposição produziram bancos arenosos com uma altura superior a 3,3 m em relação ao nível do rio. As covas de P. unifilis distribuem-se, preferencialmente, nas porções montante e jusante das barras em pontal onde os depósitos arenosos raramente ultrapassam 1,5 m de altura no momento da desova. Covas de P. expansa localizadas nas praias de areia fina a média eclodem, em média, em 68 dias ao passo que aquelas incubadas em praias de areia média a grossa levam, em média, 54 dias para eclodirem.
