Abstract The diversity of endophytes and their ecological relationships with the endangered conifer Araucaria angustifolia (a critically endangered species) are unrevealed. This study aimed to characterize the diversity of endophytic fungi associated with A. angustifolia. To this end, we analyzed 90 fragments from five individuals collected from a mixed localized fragment in Guarapuava-PR, Brazil. The total DNA of 61 morphotypes was extracted and the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region was amplified and sequenced. The sequence analysis allowed the identification of 37 genera belonging to the phylum Ascomycota and the classes Eurotiomycetes, Dothideomycetes, and Sordariomycetes, divided into 11 orders and 13 families. Most of the isolated fungi belonged to the Sordariomycetes class (40%) and to the Xylaria genus (14%), while Eurotiomycetes was the minority class within the community. Our results reveal the high endophytic richness supporting the life cycle of A. angustifolia and reinforce the necessity for the conservation of this conifer, as many genetic resources can be lost owing to its irrational exploration.

Introduction: The bronchial epithelium has defense mechanisms based on innate immunity against various airborne microorganisms, including Cryptococcus neoformans. Purpose: We evaluated the inflammatory effects of C. neoformans using human alveolar basal epithelial adenocarcinoma cells (A549 cells). Methods: A549 cells were exposed to C. neoformans (Multiplicity of Infection - MOI 1:100) and the analyses were performed 24 hours after stimulation. Results: C. neoformans increased the production of IL-6 and TGF-β1, but not IL-8 and IL-10, and activated ERK1/2 and NF-B phosphorylation in A549 cells when compared to the control group. There was a greater adhesion of C. neoformans when compared to internalization in A549 cells. Conclusion: The C. neoformans is able to promote changes in inflammatory parameters in human adenocarcinoma alveolar basal epithelial cells.

Abstract Background Based on a feminist approach, we analyzed the experiences of workplace bullying suffered by women front-line healthcare professionals dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. We start from studies that show that women make up 70% of the global health workforce, 85% in the area of nursing, and 90% in the case of social care workers. An unequivocal need thus exists to address gender issues regarding the composition of the labor force in the health area. The pandemic has aggravated recurring problems involving healthcare professionals at the various caregiving levels, such as mental harassment (bullying) and its effects on mental health. Methods Data were gathered from an online survey of a convenience (non-probability) sample composed of 1,430 volunteer respondents, all women that work in the public health system in Brazil. The analyses and discussions involved the responses to a questionnaire containing 12 closed-ended questions and one open-ended question. Results The results revealed a context of workplace bullying aggravated by precarious material, institutional and organizational conditions in the area of health services against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. This context has variously led to aggression, isolation, heavy workloads, and invasion of privacy, humiliation, persecution and fear as it was possible to see, mainly, in the answers to the study’s open-ended question. This situation degrades both work relations and the integrity of the healthcare professionals who work on the front line to treat Covid-19 cases. Conclusion We conclude that bullying is a psychosocial phenomenon that heightens the oppression and subordination still experienced by women in the contemporary context, but with new hues in a scenario of frontline response to Covid-19.

The corn leafhopper Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Wolcott) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) is a specialist insect vector of the corn stunting disease complex. This leafhopper has been reported from different overwintering plants, and more information is required regarding other potential Brazilian plants that may serve as reproductive hosts for this specie. The present study aimed to evaluate possible plants for leafhopper reproduction usually found near the maize fields and the D. maidis reproductive differences among maize genotypes. Three trials were conducted to assess D. maidis survival and oviposition on different maize genotypes and other potential host plants. Survival, nymph presence, oviposition, and nymph eclosion rates were observed. No nymphs were observed in plants other than maize. The number of D. maidis adults was influenced by the different maize inbreds, and the mean number of laid eggs varied across the tested maize materials. Oviposition and nymph emergence was observed in pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br., Poaceae] when D. maidis adults were offered only this plant as substrate, although significantly lower than those recorded on maize. Our results suggest that eliminating maize plants in the off-season could be used as a tool to reduce D. maidis reproduction, thereby minimizing the vector population size in the following season.

Os/as chamados/as jovens nem nem são os/as que nem estudam, nem trabalham, nem procuram emprego. Analisamos sua construção como problema social a partir de um tripé: o desconhecimento e desinteresse pelas experiências dos/as jovens pobres, a espetacularização do fenômeno e a constituição de um conjunto de práticas para solucioná-lo. As análises apresentadas partem de uma pesquisa que realizou, com o auxílio do programa ALCESTE, uma análise lexical de universos semânticos sobre os/as chamados/as jovens nem nem em 19 documentos da Organização Internacional do Trabalho/OIT, e uma pesquisa-intervenção com 14 jovens. Analisamos como as microrrelações, as macropolíticas, os aspectos institucionais e culturais contribuem para a ausência dos/as jovens na escola e no trabalho, o que se contrapõe às noções de que os investimentos necessários para a resolução do problema construído devem se dirigir, exclusivamente, à dimensão individual. Problematizamos as noções que convidam a pensar os/as jovens ditos/as nem nem como sujeitos vulneráveis e como grupo de risco, e destacamos sua construção como simulacro dos/as jovens que têm seus direitos negados cotidianamente.

A demanda de produtos oriundos da madeira vem se expandindo, por conta disso, há a necessidade de estudos relacionados à qualidade e aplicação desses materiais. Com isso, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar o teor de extrativos e de celulose da madeira de Ipê submetida ao processo de modificação térmica. Para realização do estudo foram abatidos quatro indivíduos de Handroanthus chrysotrichus (Mart. ex DC.) Mattos, com 11 anos de idade. Posteriormente, confeccionaram-se amostras de 2,5 x 2,5 x 41 cm, as quais foram acondicionadas em estufa com circulação de ar forçada, nas temperaturas de 120, 150, 180 e 210 ºC, por um período de 4 h. Em seguida, porções aleatórias dos corpos de prova foram seccionadas e trituradas em moinho de facas, e então, peneiradas na fração de 40/60 mesh, para a realização dos ensaios químicos de teor de extrativos totais e teor de celulose. Os dados foram processados e submetidos ao teste de médias de Tukey, utilizando o software R. Os resultados das propriedades químicas estudadas indicaram variações de acordo com as temperaturas, não apresentando uma tendência de estabilização entre os tratamentos aplicados. Uma relação entre o comportamento dessas propriedades com as demais características tecnológicas dos trabalhos disponíveis na literatura foi observada. De modo geral, são recomendados mais estudos acerca das propriedades químicas da madeira dessa espécie associados a aplicação de altas temperaturas.

A madeira em seu estado natural está susceptível ao ataque de organismos xilófagos. Com isso, são necessários tratamentos que aumentem sua durabilidade e os locais de emprego desse material. O Arseniato de Cobre Cromatado (CCA) atua de forma desejável quanto à preservação da madeira, porém, quando se trata das questões ambientais, seu uso é polêmico, principalmente com relação aos resíduos de material tratado gerados ao fim de sua vida útil, que por ter arsênio em sua formulação, as formas de reciclagem são quase nulas. Com isso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi aplicar o processo de eletrorremoção do CCA da madeira tratada, avaliando a eficácia da técnica. Para isso, foram aplicados tratamentos de CCA na madeira nas concentrações 1, 2, 3 e 4%, para posteriormente passarem pelo processo de eletrorremoção. Essa metodologia em escala de bancada, consistiu na aplicação de eletricidade numa solução condutora eletrolítica composta da combinação de ácido orgânico e inorgânico com água ultra-pura, por um período de 2 horas, onde o material ficou mergulhado nesse local. Os resultados indicaram que a eletrorremoção se mostrou eficaz, sendo que as médias de cobre, cromo e arsênio da madeira tratada reduziram com a aplicação da técnica, em todas as concentrações estudadas.

Background: Although there are studies on blood pressure (BP) and autonomic cardiac control (ACC) impairments caused by ergogenic aids, research has scarcely addressed this analysis during sleep. This study analyzed BP and ACC during sleep and wake periods in three groups of resistance training (RT) practitioners: ergogenic aid non-users, thermogenic supplement (TS) self-users, and anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) self-users. Methods: RT practitioners were selected for the Control Group (CG; n = 15), TS self-users Group (TSG; n = 15), and AAS self-users Group (AASG; n = 15). All individuals underwent cardiovascular Holter monitoring (BP, ACC) during sleep and wake periods. Results: The maximum systolic BP (SBP) during sleep was higher in AASG (p < 0.01) than CG (p < 0.001). CG had lower mean diastolic BP (DBP) than TSG (p < 0.01) and lower mean SBP (p = 0.009) than the other groups. Additionally, CG had higher values (p < 0.01) than TSG and AASG for SDNN and pNN50 during sleep. HF, LF, and LF/HF ratio values during sleep were statistically different in CG (p < 0.001) from the other groups. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that high doses of TS and AAS can impair cardiovascular parameters during sleep in RT practitioners who take ergogenic aids.

Abstract With the spread of SARS-CoV-2, contingency measures and plans to facilitate the screening of infected patients are needed. Changes in olfaction have been cited as symptoms of the disease, and it is important to prove or exclude its association with this condition to refine the symptomatic criteria for early isolation. This article aims to analyze the association between olfactory disorders and SARS-CoV-2 infection as well as investigate the possible underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. The research was carried out using the PubMed, Science Direct, and LILACS databases on May 9, 2020, and updated on May 21. Combinations of MeSH descriptors and the Boolean operator, “AND,” were used: coronavirus infections AND olfactory disorders, coronavirus infections, and neurological manifestations. A total of 1187 articles were found in the databases, of which 17 were included in the study. The data suggest that changes in smell are strongly associated with Covid-19, especially in women and patients with fever; these changes increase the degree of suspicion of Covid-19, and they warrant early implementation of isolation and surveillance measures. There are still gaps in the elucidation of the pathways involved in the loss of smell caused by SARS-CoV-2; however, the great affinity of the virus for ACE-2 receptors, which are present in large quantities in the nasal cavity and olfactory bulb, has been considered.

O presente artigo analisa a trajetória da educação no município de Xaxim (SC) no período entre 1920 e 2020. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida por meio de métodos e técnicas quantitativos e qualitativos. Os dados quantitativos foram obtidos nas bases do INEP, da Secretaria Estadual de Educação de Santa Catarina e da Secretaria Municipal de Educação de Xaxim. A pesquisa qualitativa foi desenvolvida por meio de uma extensa revisão bibliográfica e acesso e sistematização de um conjunto amplo de fotos e documentos. A pesquisa revela aspectos centrais da história social e política da educação do município de Xaxim. Ela permite compreender o longo caminho da universalização da educação básica. Em Xaxim, o direito à educação para todas as crianças em idade escolar do Ensino Fundamental tornou-se realidade apenas no final do século XX

The house dust mite allergen Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) is a major driver of allergic asthma. Studies from our group demonstrated anti-eosinophilic effects of ethanolic extract of Lafoensia pacari stem bark (and ellagic acid, isolated from L. pacari extract), used as traditional medicine in Brazil to naturally treat inflammatory conditions. Here, we extended these results through performing phytochemical analysis of the constituents of L. pacari using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and evaluating the anti-inflammatory effects of both L. pacari and ellagic acid in the human BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cell line stimulated with Der p. Ellagic acid (major constituent), gallic acid, ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid and rosmarinic acid, but not flavonoids (rutin, kaempferol, luteolin and quercetin), were found in the L. pacari. Pro-inflammatory mediators, IL-6, IL-8 and CCL-2 production were increased in BEAS-2B stimulated with Der p (10 μg/mL, 24 h) compared to control. L. pacari (250 μg/mL) and ellagic acid (100 μM) significantly reduced the concentration of these mediators. L. pacari increased the production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine, IL-10. These results were associated with the downregulation of NF-κB and STAT3 pathways. These findings indicate a novel anti-inflammatory action for L. pacari and ellagic acid in the airways allergic inflammatory response. Jovens que nem estudam, nem trabalham e nem procuram emprego têm sido nomeados/as como jovens nem-nem, em diferentes contextos sociais. Tanto no Brasil quanto em outros países do mundo, a juventude nem-nem tem ocupado um lugar de destaque no meio acadêmico, na mídia e nas intervenções por parte do Estado e de outros atores sociais, todos buscando formas de atuar sobre o problema. Diante desse cenário, buscamos compreender as noções construídas sobre os/as jovens nomeados/as como nem-nem, bem como as propostas de controle e regulação produzidas por diferentes atores da sociedade para eles/as. A partir de uma pesquisa documental, apresentamos neste artigo os resultados de uma análise lexical realizada com o auxílio do programa ALCESTE – Análise Lexical por Contexto de um Conjunto de Segmentos de Texto. Os resultados destacam os principais universos semânticos sobre os/as jovens nomeados/as nem-nem em trechos retirados de onze (11) edições do documento Trabalho Decente e Juventude da Organização Internacional do Trabalho. Problematizamos algumas noções que convidam a pensar os/as jovens ditos/as nem-nem como sujeitos vulneráveis e como grupo de risco, sendo as respostas mais imediatas direcionadas ao investimento na subjetividade do/a jovem, reatualizando o mito dos/as jovens pobres como classe perigosa, sem com isso levar em consideração a reprodução social da nossa desigualdade.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the morphological, biochemical, and histological effects of aqueous extracts of peanut (skinless and added to 1% skin) in Swiss mice submitted to a high-fat diet. Methods: Forty male Swiss mice were divided into four groups (n=10 per group): GI) normocaloric diet; GII) high-fat diet; GIII) high-fat diet + 0.5 mL of peanut extract; GIV) high-fat diet + 0.5 mL of peanut extract + 1% peanut skin. The animals were weighed weekly and euthanized after 12 weeks for histopathological and biochemical analyses. The study was approved by the Animal Use Ethics Committee. Results: The animals in the GIV group had higher body weight when compared to the other ones. Increase in total cholesterol in GIII, increase in blood glucose in groups GII, GIII and GIV, decrease in serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) concentration in groups GI and GIV and increase in serum concentration of C-reactive protein in GII were seen. The presence of vacuolar fat deposits was found in animal livers from GII. Conclusions: The extracts improved the plasma concentrations of animals that received a high-fat diet, including preventing morphological damage to liver tissue. These benefits were enhanced by the association of peanut shells with the extract.

Abstract Thermophilic fungi constitute an ecologically well-defined group, commonly found in environments wherever decomposition of organic matter takes place, making them self-heating. The importance of thermophilic fungus in ecosystems contrasts with the incompleteness of our understanding of the group’s biogeography patterns, phylogenies and coevolution relationships. Actually, the lack of data about thermophilic fungi from the Brazil is a limiting factor that also contributes for this scenario. In order to reduce this gap of knowledge, we aimed to characterize thermophilic filamentous fungi in Araucaria Forest, Atlantic Forest biome. Species identification was achieved by using internal transcribed spacers (ITS) as molecular ribosomal markers. In total, 240 heat-tolerant fungal strains were isolated and identified as Thermothielavioides terrestris, Thielavia sp., Thermoascus crustaceus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Rhizomucor miehei, Rhizomucor pusillus, and Rhizopus microsporus. All thermophilic strains exhibited optimal growth at 45 °C. T. crustaceus, T. miehei e R. pusillus were the dominant species, with the frequencies of occurrence of 35.00%, 28.33% and 23.33%, respectively. Our data reveals the apparent diversity of the Neotropical realm and may serve as reference to future studies that will try to elucidate important aspects of group.

O presente artigo apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa realizada entre 2017 e 2019 cujo propósito principal foi analisar os desdobramentos das políticas de municipalização da educação básica nos últimos trinta anos (1988-2018). Além das políticas em âmbito nacional e estadual, decidiu-se realizar um estudo numa unidade específica da federação. O estudo foi realizado no município de Xaxim, localizado na região Oeste de Santa Catarina, com população estimada em 28.424 habitantes. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida por meio de uma extensa revisão bibliográfica, análise documental e sistematização e análise de dados primários e secundários do município e da educação municipal disponíveis em diversas bases de dados. O estudo evidenciou que a partir da CF de 1988 o governo federal e o estado de Santa Catarina implementaram, de forma progressiva, uma série de políticas de descentralização de competências aos municípios. Tendo em vista esse conjunto de políticas, o município de Xaxim implementou inúmeras ações de expansão de sua rede municipal de ensino. Em 2018, a rede municipal respondia por 77% das matrículas do Ensino Fundamental e 72% de todas as matrículas da Educação Básica. Em 2018, a rede municipal respondia por 98% das matrículas das Creches; 97%, da Pré-escola; 77%, do Ensino Fundamental; 70%, da Educação Especial Exclusiva, e 62% da Educação de Jovens e Adultos. O município não oferta ensino médio. O estudo demonstrou também que a rede privada responde por apenas 3% do total das matrículas da educação básica.

A partir dos anos 2000, houve um aumento na aquisição de dados LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) em áreas urbanas, o que possibilitou diversos estudos e aplicações nas mais variadas áreas, verificando-se um crescimento dos acervos históricos. Com isso, são necessários métodos de processamento robustos para manipulação desses dados. Os métodos de registro de dados laser inserem-se nesse contexto, essenciais para promover a utilização de dados oriundos de distintos equipamentos e datas. Este estudo consiste em avaliar o desempenho de três métodos de registro: Iterative Closest Point (ICP), Coherent Point Drift (CPD) e Support Vector Registration (SVR). A metodologia contempla o pré-processamento dos dados LiDAR para a extração de três telhados de edifícios com características distintas, localizados no campus da UFPR, em Curitiba – PR. Foram utilizados dados do sensor Optech ALTM Pegasus HD 500, com frequência de 300 kHz e altura de voo de 1.600 m, densidade média de 1,71 pontos por m² e IFOV de 25°. Os métodos foram implementados na linguagem Python. Como resultados, foram obtidos os registros, dos quais foram extraídas suas acurácias e tempos de processamento. Os resultados evidenciaram que os métodos CPD e SVR são ótimas alternativas para superar as limitações do ICP, ressaltando-se o desempenho do CPD e a eficiência computacional do SVR, sendo que este último é particularmente adequado para lidar com dados ruidosos.

Resumo Objetivou-se realizar a caracterização físico-química e dos compostos bioativos do extrato aquoso de amendoim sem pele e acrescido de 1% de pele. Os extratos aquosos de amendoim sem e com pele foram caracterizados quanto aos parâmetros: umidade, extrato seco total, cinzas, lipídios, proteínas, teor de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, pH, carboidrato e fibras totais, além de compostos fenólicos e flavonoides. Os percentuais de umidade encontrados foram elevados em todas as amostras, resultante de sua base de extrato aquoso produzido na proporção 1:8 (amendoim:água). Observou-se que os extratos aquosos de amendoim sem pele e acrescido de 1% de pele não apresentaram diferença significativa entre si para os parâmetros de pH, como também para sólidos solúveis totais, lipídios e carboidratos. No entanto, a acidez, proteínas, fibras e cinzas apresentaram diferença estatística. Na determinação de compostos fenólicos, notou-se que o extrato aquoso de amendoim com pele apresentou uma quantidade maior quando comparado ao sem pele. Quanto aos flavonoides, a maior quantidade também foi encontrada na amostra com pele, apresentando uma diferença média de 2,52 µg/100 g base úmida. Os extratos aquosos de amendoim com e sem pele mostraram ser uma valiosa alternativa para um melhor aproveitamento do amendoim, proporcionando à população um produto nutricional. A bebida acrescida de 1% de pele enriqueceu o produto quanto ao potencial antioxidante devido às suas maiores concentrações de compostos fenólicos totais e flavonoides.

ABSTRACT: Whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B is the major pest of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Brazil and other countries. Host plant resistance is one of the cornerstones of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and assessment of cultivars for insect resistance is fundamental to provide farmers options for pest control. This study evaluated common bean resistance to whitefly in the winter and rainy seasons in Jaboticabal, Brazil, and correlated the infestation with climatic factors. The plant part and development period of common bean that are more susceptible to whitefly infestation were also examined for potential use in IPM. Field experiments were carried out using 18 and 19 commercial cultivars in the winter and rainy seasons, respectively. Whitefly eggs, nymphs, and adults in the upper part and lower part of plants were sampled from 25 to 60 days after emergence (DAE). Cultivars IAC-Una and IAC-Eldorado had less oviposition and the former also showed lower adult infestation in the winter season. In the rainy season, cultivars IAPAR-81 and Guará had a smaller number of eggs, whereas IAC-Centauro was less infested by nymphs. The number of nymphs and adults was similar among cultivars in the winter and rainy seasons, respectively. The upper part of plants had a greater number of eggs and adults, while, the lower part harbored larger numbers of nymphs. Common bean was more susceptible to whitefly at 25-32 DAE in both seasons. These results add useful information to IPM of whitefly in common bean.

A simple, rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of captopril (CPT) in pharmaceutical formulations is proposed. This method is based on the reduction reaction of ammonium molybdate, in the presence of sulphuric acid, for the group thiol of CPT, producing a green compound (λmax 407 nm). Beer’s law is obeyed in a concentration range of 4.60 x 10-4 – 1.84 x 10-3 mol l-1 of CPT with an excellent correlation coefficient (r = 0.9995). The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 7.31 x 10-6 e 2.43 x 10-5 mol l-1 of CPT, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of CPT in commercial brands of pharmaceuticals. No interferences were observed from the common excipients in the formulations. The results obtained by the proposed method were favorably compared with those given by the official reported method at 95 % confidence level.

INTRODUCTION: Pectus excavatum is defined as a depression approaching the sternum and costal cartilages to the spine. Several theories explain its etiology, the most accepted of which is the exaggerated growth of the costal cartilages, which causes a posterior displacement of the sternum and consequent depression. The treatment includes correction of breast asymmetries by using silicone breast implants in patients without cardiopulmonary symptoms, only with esthetic complaints. METHODS: We reviewed the medical and photographic records of eight female patients diagnosed as having pectus excavatum, who underwent operation at a private hospital in the southern region of Brazil. These women sought consultation for local esthetic complaints and had no cardiorespiratory complaints. RESULTS: Six patients submitted only for breast prosthesis placement. One patient had a prosthesis implanted 15 years before, which was replaced by a new implant in the same plane. Another patient had undergone pectus repair with Nuss surgery 10 years before, and the patient came to the hospital with a complaint of hypomasty and asymmetry. The preferred anesthesia was general anesthesia in five of the cases. The prosthesis inclusion plane in almost all the cases was subglandular. Only one patient had a complication (seroma). CONCLUSIONS: In our sample, the placement of breast prostheses in the patients with pectus excavatum brought harmonic esthetic results, attenuating and/or masking the chest defect, with satisfactory esthetic results for the patients.

Introdução: As plantas alimentícias não convencionais (PANC) destacam-se como plantas que possuem uma ou mais partes comestíveis, sendo elas espontâneas ou cultivadas, nativas ou exóticas que não estão incluídas em nosso cardápio cotidiano. Este trabalho visa abordar as plantas alimentícias não convencionais Objetivo: como alimento funcional para a população, de forma a promover a disseminação do conhecimento dessas espécies na cultura alimentar e o incentivo ao seu consumo. Métodos: Foram sumarizados dados de 30 artigos recentes em português e inglês provenientes de bases de dados (Scielo e Pubmed), cadernos de saúde e livros. Comentários: As PANC estudadas demonstraram atuar nos mais diversos processos metabólicos, apresentando atividades anti-inflamatórias, antibacterianas, cicatrizantes, antineoplásicas e antiescorbúticas. Além disso, constatou-se a presença de concentrações significativas de cálcio, ferro, zinco, potássio e magnésio em suas composições. Aliado a isso, tem-se o alto teor de proteínas e de fibras, servindo no auxílio de processos gastrointestinais. Conclusão: As plantas alimentícias não convencionais ainda são pouco conhecidas pela população brasileira. Suas composições e valores nutricionais já são bem conhecidos, bem como a segurança de seu emprego na alimentação diária. Além de sabor agradável, elas possuem altas concentrações de fibras, vitaminais e minerais, necessários na manutenção da homeostase corporal.

Introdução: A melatonina é um hormônio produzido majoritariamente pela glândula pineal e que tem ação direta sobre a regulação de processos fisiológicos, especialmente o ciclo circadiano. Objetivo: Demonstrar através da literatura, os diferentes efeitos fisiológicos relacionados à administração da melatonina exógena. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo e exploratório, baseado na sumarização de trabalhos recentes publicados em inglês ou português. Foram analisados e incluídos 25 artigos indexados nas bases de dados Scielo, Pubmed, Science Direct e Cochrane. Comentários: Este hormônio está diretamente envolvido na regulação de processos fisiológicos, como o ciclo circadiano, regulação imune e cardiovascular, atividade pró-oxidante e antioxidante e gastroproteção, além de possuir efeito neuroprotetor e neuromodulador. Conclusão: A melatonina está diretamente ligada a efeitos positivos em processos dos mais diversos sistemas corporais. Trata-se de uma molécula de administração segura e de boa tolerância, estando relacionada a poucos efeitos colaterais e não ocasionando sintomas de retirada.

The preoccupation with social continuity and the ideal ways of integrating young people in society, especially those from a poor background, makes the NEET (neither in employment nor in education or training) youth an adequate field for intervention by different social actors. The discomfort with the inactivity of poor youth is present along the history of brazilian youth and, today, it is under the term NEET that certain sections of the young population have been highlighted by the media, in social programs and politics. We analyse how the construction of the so called NEET youth as a social problem is sustained by a lack of knowledge of the experiences of poor youth, a tendency to create a spectacle around the fenomenon, and by the structuring of practices that intend to solve it. We reflect on how these titles renew the notion of a dangerous youth and construct paradoxical social practices.

Since its introduction in the early 1990s, trade marketing has played a significant role in companies and their distribution channels, focusing on the consolidation of marketing strategy at the point of purchase. In practice, one of the main obstacles for a more widespread use of trade marketing has been the lack of management tools allowing visualisation of the consequences of trade marketing in the organisation's objectives. This study shows the use of the Multi-Criteria Decision Aiding–Constructivist methodology model as an instrument of intervention in a case study conducted in a pharmaceutical company. A customised evaluation model was built interactively by interviewing decision makers to identify, organise, measure, and integrate those factors considered necessary and sufficient for the management of trade marketing. The constructed model enables executives to incorporate unique aspects of the company and the environment, expanding the possibilities for performance evaluation of trade marketing in the organisation.

In sustainable cropping systems, the management of herbivorous arthropods is a challenge for the high performance of the tomato crop. One way to reduce the damage caused by these pests is the use of resistant cultivars within a sustainable integrated management system. The host selection of Tetranychus urticae, Bemisia tabaci, and Tuta absoluta was evaluated, characterizing their preference among the tomato genotypes RVTZ2011-79-503-143, RVTZ2011-79-335-164, RVTZ2011-79-185-250 (high zingiberene content—HZC), and RVTZ2011-79-117-273 (low zingiberene content—LZC). Such genotypes were selected in the F2BC2 generation (the F2 generation of the 2th backcross towards Solanum lycopersicum after the inicial interspecific cross S. lycopersicum × S. habrochaites var. hirsutum), resulting from crossing Solanum habrochaites var. hirsutum PI-127826 (HZC and resistant to mites) and the commercial cv. Redenção (S. lycopersicum) (LZC and susceptible to mites). In choice and no-choice bioassays by T. urticae, and in choice bioassays by B. tabaci and T. absoluta, arthropods preferred to stay and oviposit in an LZC genotype. In contrast, genotypes with HZC showed repellency to pests and induced a non-preference for oviposition. The F2BC2 genotypes selected for HZC are considered sources of resistance genes to these pests for tomato breeding programs, and therefore have excellent potential for sustainable cropping systems. These results represent an advance in obtaining tomato genetic materials which can be used in sustainable production systems with less loss from pests.

This article describes the application and performance of an inexpensive, simple and portable device for colorimetric quantitative determination of drugs in pharmaceutical preparations. The sensor is a light detector resistor (LDR) incorporated into a black PTFE cell and coupled to a low-cost multimeter (Ohmmeter). Quantitative studies were performed with captopril/p-chloranil/H2O2 and methyldopa/ammonium molybdate systems. Calibration curves were obtained by plotting the electrical resistance of the LDR against the concentration of the colored species in the ranges 1.84 × 10-4 to 1.29 × 10-3mol L-1 and 5.04 × 10-4 to 2.52 × 10-3 mol L-1 for captopril/p-chloranil/H2O2 and methyldopa/ammonium molybdate systems, respectively, exhibiting good coefficients of determination. Statistical analysis of the results obtained showed no significant difference between the proposed methodologies and the official reported methods, as evidenced by the t-test and variance ratio at a 95% confidence level. The results of this study demonstrate the applicability of the instrument for simple, accurate, precise, fast,in situ and low-cost colorimetric analysis of drugs in pharmaceutical products.

Abstract Questionnaires for the assessment of knowledge and self-perception can be useful to diagnose what a dentist knows about management and administration. The aim of the present study was to create and validate the Dental Management Survey Brazil (DMS-BR) scale, based on meetings with experts in the field. After having elaborated the first version, 10 audits were performed in dental offices in order to produce the final version, which included nine dimensions: location, patient, finance, marketing, competition, quality, staff, career, and productivity. The accuracy of the instrument was measured by intrarater and interrater reliability. In the validation phase, 247 Brazilian dentists answered a web-based questionnaire. The data were processed using Stata 13.0 and the significance level was set at 95%. The instrument had intrarater and interrater reliability (ICC-0.93 and 0.94). The overall average of respondents for the DMS-BR scale was 3.77 (SD = 0.45). Skewness and kurtosis were below absolute values 3 and 7, respectively. Internal validity measured by Cronbach’s alpha was 0.925 and the correlation of each dimension with the final result of the DMS-BR ranged between 0.606 and 0.810. Correlation with the job satisfaction scale was 0.661. The SEM data ranged between 0.80 and 0.56. The questionnaire presented satisfactory indicators of dentists’ self-perception about management and administration activities.

The jau, Zungaro jahu (Ihering, 1898) is an endangered species, rheophilic, reaching 1.5 m and more than 100 kg. During a work of microbiological monitoring of water quality, in the cultivation of Zungaro jahu, microorganisms that were isolated, were previously reported in other studies, as family members Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus and non-fermenting bacilli. However, it was also isolated Chromobacterium violaceum, which despite being a bacterium found in such an environment, it was reported linked to the cultivation of fish. This paper describes the Chromobacterium violaceum founded in a psiculture, which has implications for national fish farming.

A simple, precise, sensitive, rapid, specific and economical spectrophotometric method was developed to determine methyldopa (MTD) content in bulk and pharmaceutical dosage formulations. The proposed method was based on the formation of a colored product from the nitrosation reaction of MTD with sodium nitrite in an acid medium. The resultant nitroso derivative species reacts further with sodium hydroxide and is converted it into a more stable compound. This yellow nitrosation product exhibited an absorption maximum at 430 nm. Beer's Law was obeyed in a concentration range of 6.37 to 82.81 μg mL-1 MTD with an excellent coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9998). No interference was observed from common excipients in formulations. The results showed the method to be simple, accurate and readily applied for the determination of MTD in pure form and in pharmaceutical preparations. The analytical results obtained for these products using the proposed method are in agreement with those of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia procedure at a 95% confidence level.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the adaptability and stability of corn hybrids for grain yield in environments with high crop management standards. Ten corn hybrids were evaluated for grain yield in 48 environments, consisting of 12 locations over a period of four years inSouth Brazil. A complete experimental, random block design with two repetitions was used. Adaptability and stability were analyzed according to the bi-segmented discontinuous model with measurement errors in the variables. The behavior of hybrids was studied as a function of the average yield in the inferior and/or superior environments, the estimates of the parameters of the equation, and the quality of the fit. The 30F36 hybrid behaved better in the superior environments and it is indicated for farmers who adopt the highest technological standards for crop management, whereas the 30F53 hybrid was classified as close to ideal; that is, it is indicated for cultivation under various environmental conditions. The 30R50 and 32R48 hybrids are appropriate only for average environments. There is a very good phenotypic stability in simple hybrids associated with high potential yield.

Organophosphates are old agrochemicals that are toxic for wasps (Vespidae) that are predators of insect pests. However, chlorantraniliprole is the first insecticide produced from the new anthranilic diamide class, which binds to ryanodine receptor modulators. This study uses chlorpyrifos, triazophos, pyridaphenthion and new chlorantraniliprole insecticides that have not yet been extensively tested for effects on non-target organisms. Adults of the predatory wasps were exposed to concentrations of organophosphate inseticides and the most toxic was used for a behavior test. The trial area, located in the Rio Paranaíba, Minas Gerais, received two treatments: with insecticide and without insecticide. Chlorpyrifos, the most toxic insecticide, was used in the dose of 1.5L/ha. In order to evaluate the predation, the number with predation action (injuries made by the wasps) in the leaves were accounted. Behavior activities collect of nine colonies Protonectarina sylveirae, Brachigastra lecheguana, Polybia sp. and Polistes versicolor works were quantified. All colonies were in the adult phase. The colonies were observed by 12h, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The number of wasps that leaved and returned to the nest, type of sources collected (glucidic foods, prey larvae, matherial for construction of the nest). The most toxic insecticide was chlorpyrifos and the most selective was chlorantraniliprole. The species and frequencies of wasps predator were: P. sylveirae (71.50%), B. lecheguana (12.00%), Polybia sp. (7.00%) and P. versicolor (1.00%). Chlor-pyrifos presented not selective and changes in the behavior to the predatory wasps.

This study aimed to estimate the average number of seeds of Erythrina falcata eaten by larvae of Agathodes designalis (Guenée, 1854), Liopasia ochracealis (Walker 1865) and Terastia meticulosalis (Guenée, 1854) (Lepidoptera, Crambidae), which prey on the seeds of this species. The lepidopteran larvae were collected in the field from fruits of E. falcata, isolated in Petri dishes, and fed with immature seeds. The average number of seeds preyed upon by the larvae ranged from two (A. designalis) to five (L. ochracealis). This work is also the first report of the parasitism of Macrocentrus sp. (Hymenoptera, Brachonidae) on larvae of T. meticulosalis. The results demonstrate that this parasitism is one of the factors that influence the rates of seed predation of E. falcata by lepidopteran larvae in the natural environment.

Este estudo teve como objetivo estimar a quantidade média de sementes de Erythrina falcata consumida por larvas de Agathodes designalis (Guenée, 1854), Liopasia ochracealis (Walker 1865) e Terastia meticulosalis (Guenée, 1854) (Lepidoptera, Crambidae) que predam suas sementes. As larvas de lepidópteros foram coletadas de vagens de E. falcata em ambiente natural, individualizadas em placas de Petri e alimentadas com sementes imaturas. O número médio de sementes predadas variou de duas, para A. designalis a cinco para L. ochracealis. O parasitismo de Macrocentrus sp. (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) em larvas de T. meticulosalis, é relatado pela primeira vez. Os resultados demonstram que a ação do parasitoide é um dos fatores que influencia nas taxas de predação de sementes de E. falcata por larvas de lepidópteros no ambiente natural.

RESUMO Este artigo visa discutir as experiências, nos âmbitos individual/subjetivo, coletivo/social, profissional, geracional e de classe social, vivenciadas por jovens pobres que participam de programas de aprendizagem profissional. Apontamos como as hierarquias geracional e de classe social tornam estes jovens alvo de diversas ações que visam integrá-los e adaptá-los a um modelo específico de sociedade, tornando-os um campo de intervenção social, sobre o qual vários atores da sociedade atuam no sentido regular e conformar as experiências juvenis. As análises apontam como estas hierarquias constroem lugares de subordinação para os jovens dentro das instituições de formação, nos locais de trabalho e na sociedade. O direito ao trabalho é tomado como trabalho da carência do jovem pobre dentro dos programas de aprendizagem profissional, numa perspectiva de salvação deste jovem, gerando para ele maiores contribuições presentes do que futuras em suas vidas, dentro de um horizonte de instauração de novas trajetórias de vida.

Estudo de caráter transversal, quantitativo, qualitativo, descritivo, exploratório e bibliográfico, resultante da realização do Projeto Terapia anti-hipertensiva em pacientes com doença renal crônica (DRC) em diálise na Clínica de Doenças Renais (CDR) no Município de Imperatriz - MA. Assim, este trabalho objetivou analisar diagnósticos de enfermagem, identificados à luz da Teoria do Autocuidado e baseados na taxonomia II da NANDA-I, bem como identificar o perfil socioeconômico de pacientes portadores de DRC em hemodiálise. Para tanto, foram entrevistados 40 pacientes no período de abril a setembro de 2010. A análise dos dados demonstrou que 75% dos pacientes são homens, 70% católicos, 65% são casados, 30% encontram-se na faixa etária de 51 a 65 anos e 35% possuem renda mensal de 1 a 2 salários mínimos. Os diagnósticos de enfermagem identificados foram: controle eficaz do regime terapêutico, nutrição desequilibrada menos que as necessidades corporais, risco de desequilíbrio do volume de líquidos, fadiga, estilo de vida sedentário, conhecimento deficiente, risco de sentimento de impotência, risco para baixa autoestima situacional, desesperança, disposição para o bem estar espiritual aumentado, risco de infecção e proteção ineficaz. Além disso, os fatores que influenciaram na demanda terapêutica de autocuidado a partir dos diagnósticos identificados foram relacionados e discutidos. Dessa forma, a DRC associada à hemodiálise tem desenvolvido no paciente uma maior necessidade de atenção e apoio para não fraquejar diante desta patologia e do processo terapêutico, para tanto, tem-se o processo de enfermagem, como instrumento do cuidar humanizado que permite ao enfermeiro mimetizar estas necessidades

ResumoA pitangueira (Eugenia uniflora L.) é uma espécie arbórea, nativa do Bioma Mata Atlântica que, recentemente, tem sido explorada pelas indústrias alimentícias, cosméticas e medicinais. Para uma espécie nativa ser explorada comercialmente, é necessário conhecimentos básicos de ecologia e genética a fim de embasar estratégias de manejo e exploração sustentável. Esta revisão traz uma compilação dos trabalhos realizados com pitangueira no período de 1960 a 2010. Os primeiros trabalhos realizados com a espécie foram focados na caracterização taxonômica, buscando descritores específicos da espécie que permitissem diferenciá-las das outras espécies do Gênero. Os estudos ecológicos elucidaram a distribuição e os mecanismos reprodutivos. A identificação de compostos ativos de interesse para saúde e cosmética e também, para a qualidade dos frutos para a indústria alimentícia, levou à exploração comercial. A fim de aperfeiçoar a produção, estudos relacionados a aspectos agronômicos tornaram-se essências, entre estes foram realizados estudos para identificação de genótipos superiores e desenvolvimento de técnicas de plantio e manejo. Os trabalhos na área de genética são recentes, da ultima década, e trazem informações de diversidade genética das populações naturais de pitangueira do Brasil. A compilação desses dados possibilitou observar que há um forte interesse econômico na espécie. No entanto, os estudos realizados até o momento, são insuficientes para o entendimento da ecologia da espécie. A exploração econômica, sem o conhecimento básico, pode comprometer o futuro da mesma. Isso poderá ser evitado com a intensificação de estudos na área de genética, ecologia e manejo sustentável de E. uniflora.AbstractThe Surinam cherry (Eugenia uniflora L.) is an arboreal species, native to the Atlantic Forest biome, which has recently been exploited by food and cosmetic industries and to the use as medicinal plant. For commercial exploitation of a native species is necessary basic knowledge of ecology and genetics in order to plane sustainable strategies of management. This review provides a compilation of scientific works with Surinam cherry in the period 1960 to 2010. The first studies with Surinam cherry were about taxonomic characterization. These works focused on find specific descriptors of the kind that enables us to distinguish them from other species of the genus. Ecological studies have elucidated the distribution and reproductive behavior of the Surinam cherry. The identification of active compounds of interest to cosmetics and health and quality of fruit for the food industry has led to commercial exploitation. In order to improve production, studies related to agronomic aspects become essential. Among these studies were conducted experiments to identify superior genotypes and development of techniques for planting and management. The works in genetics is recent, date of the last decade, and provide information of genetic diversity in natural populations of Surinam cherry in Brazil. The compilation of these data allowed observing that there is a strong economic interest in the species. However, the studies so far are insufficient for understanding the ecology of the species. The economic exploitation, without the basic knowledge, can compromise the future of the species. This can be avoided with the intensification of studies in genetics, ecology and sustainable management of Eugenia uniflora.

Most strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne) cultivars used in Brazil are developed in other countries, it became clear the need to start the strawberry breeding program in the country. To start a breeding program is necessary the genetic characterization of the germplasm available. Molecular markers are important tools that can be used for this purpose. The objectives of the present study were to assess the genetic similarity among 11 strawberry cultivars using RAPD and ISSR molecular markers and to indicate the possible promising crosses. The DNA of the eleven strawberry cultivars was extracted and amplified by PCR with RAPD and ISSR primers. The DNA fragments were separated in agarose gel for the RAPD markers and in polyacrylamide gel for the ISSR markers. The genetic similarity matrix was estimated by the Jaccard coefficient. Based on this matrix, the cultivars were grouped using the UPGMA method. The dendogram generated by the RAPD markers distributed the cultivars in three groups while the ISSR markers generated two groups. There was no direct relationship between the marker groups when the two types of markers were compared. The grouping proposed by the ISSR markers was more coherent with the origin and the genealogy of the cultivars than that proposed by the RAPD markers, and it can be considered the most efficient method for the study of genetic divergence in strawberry. The most promising crosses, based on the genetic divergence estimated from the RAPD and ISSR molecular data were between the Tudla and Ventana and the Oso Grande and Ventana cultivars, respectively.

CONTEXTO: Por ser o laser um método novo no tratamento das varizes, há muitos mitos e dúvidas com relação à sua eficácia; assim, surgiu a necessidade de compará-lo a substância esclerosante mais utilizada em nosso meio (glicose hipertônica). OBJETIVO: Comparar a eficiência do laser diodo 980 nm à glicose 75% na oclusão de veias em orelha de coelho. MÉTODOS: Ensaio aleatório em animais de laboratório por 21 dias. A amostra consistiu de orelhas de coelhos machos adultos. Grupo L (laser): 15 orelhas tratadas com laser; grupo G (glicose 75%): 15 orelhas tratadas com glicose a 75%. Variáveis primárias: veias esclerosadas e/ou ocluídas. Variáveis complementares: volume da substância administrada, complicações e peso. O tamanho da amostra foi estimado em 30 orelhas. Foi realizado o teste exato de Fisher associado ao Risco Relativo (RR), calculando-se o intervalo de confiança (IC) de 95% para as variáveis acima. RESULTADOS: A incidência de esclerose ou oclusão venosa no grupo G foi de 53% (8/15; IC95%: 27-79) e no grupo L, 20% (3/15; IC95%: 4-49). O p bicaudal foi de 0,1281, o RR usando a aproximação de Katz foi de 2,66; IC95%: 0,87-8,15. CONCLUSÃO: A eficiência do laser diodo 980 nm em comparação à da glicose 75% na oclusão de veias para o modelo experimental estudado foi equivalente.BACKGROUND: The laser is a new treatment to varicose veins and there is several myths and doubts in relation to its efficacy; then, there is the need to compare it with the most commonly sclerosing solution (hypertonic glucose) used in our specialty. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficiency of the diode laser 980nm to the glucose 75% in the occlusion of veins from the ear of rabbits. METHODS: Aleatory trial in laboratory animals during 21 days. The sample consisted of ears from male adult rabbits. Group L (laser): 15 ears treated with laser; group G (glucose 75%): 15 ears treated with glucose 75%. Primary variables: sclerotic and/or occluded veins. Complementary variables: volume of the managed substance, complications and weight of rabbit. The sample size was estimated in 30 ears. The statistical analysis was carried out by Fisher''s exact test associated to the Relative Risk (RR), calculating the confidence interval of 95% for the mentioned variables. RESULTS: The incidence of sclerosis or venous occlusion in group G was 53% (8/15; 95%CI: 27-79) and in group L was 20% (3/15; 95% CI: 4-49). Two-tailed p was 0.1281, RR using the approximation of Katz was 2.66; 95%CI: 0.87-8.15. CONCLUSION: The efficiency of the diode laser 980 nm in comparison to glucose 75% in occlusion of veins in this experimental model was equivalent.

Os caracteres morfoagronômicos são tradicionalmente usados na caracterização de cultivares e no estudo da divergência genética, contribuindo na definição de estratégias para o melhoramento genético. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a divergência genética por meio de caracteres morfoagronômicos de 11 cultivares de morangueiro (Aromas, Camarosa, Camino Real, Campinas, Diamante, Dover, Oso Grande, Sweet Charlie, Toyonoka, Tudla e Ventana), nas condições climáticas da região Centro-Sul do Paraná. Foram analisados 29 caracteres morfoagronômicos relacionados com a planta, folha, flor, fruto e aquênios do morangueiro. As similaridades genéticas foram calculadas por meio de análise multivariada e, os cultivares, agrupados com base na matriz de similaridade genética, usando-se UPGMA. Dentre os 29 caracteres morfoagronômicos avaliados, oito apresentaram diferenças não significativas (p < 0,05). A similaridade média foi de 38%, variando de 19 (aromas e camino real) a 62% (Camino Real e Camarosa; Aromas e Sweet Charlie). O dendrograma alocou os cultivares em quatro grupos, contudo, essa divisão não foi coerente com a origem e genealogia dos cultivares. O cultivar Tudla apresenta elevado potencial "per se" para utilização em programas de melhoramento. O cruzamento mais promissor com base nos caracteres morfoagronômicos é entre os cultivares Camarosa e Campinas.

INTRODUCTION: In the past two decades members of the genus Enterococcus have emerged as important nosocomial pathogens worldwide. This study prospectively analyzed the distribution of species and trends in antimicrobial resistance among clinical isolates of enterococci in a Brazilian tertiary hospital from 2006-2009. METHODS: Enterococcal species were identified by conventional biochemical tests. The antimicrobial susceptibility profile was performed by disk diffusion in accordance with the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). A screening test for vancomycin was also performed. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for vancomycin was determined using the broth dilution method. Molecular assays were used to confirm speciation and genotype of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). RESULTS: A total of 324 non-repetitive enterococcal isolates were recovered, of which 87% were E. faecalis and 10.8% E. faecium. The incidence of E. faecium per 1,000 admissions increased significantly (p < 0.001) from 0.3 in 2006 to 2.3 in 2009. The VRE rate also increased over time from 2.5% to 15.5% (p < 0.001). All VRE expressed high-level resistance to vancomycin (MIC >256µg/ mL) and harbored vanA genes. The majority (89.5%) of VRE belonged to E. faecium species, which were characteristically resistant to ampicillin and quinolones. Overall, ampicillin resistance rate increased significantly from 2.5% to 21.4% from 2006-2009. Resistance rates for gentamicin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and erythromycin significantly decreased over time, although they remained high. Quinolones resistance rates were high and did not change significantly over time. CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained show a significant increasing trend in the incidence of E. faecium resistant to ampicillin and vancomycin.INTRODUÇÃO: Nas últimas duas décadas, os enterococos emergiram como importantes patógenos nosocomiais no mundo inteiro. Neste estudo, foi analisada a distribuição das espécies e a evolução da resistência aos antimicrobianos entre isolados clínicos de enterococos obtidos em um hospital terciário, no período de 2006 a 2009. MÉTODOS: As espécies foram identificadas por testes bioquímicos convencionais e o perfil de sensibilidade foi determinado pelo método de disco difusão. A sensibilidade à vancomicina foi também determinada pela triagem em agar e pela concentração inibitória mínima (CIM). Testes moleculares foram utilizados para confirmar as espécies e determinar os genótipos dos enterococos resistentes à vancomicina (VRE). RESULTADOS: Foram analisadas 324 amostras de enterococos, sendo 87% E. faecalis e 10,8% E. faecium. A incidência de E. faecium por 1.000 pacientes internados aumentou significativamente (p < 0,001) de 0,3 em 2006 para 2,3 em 2009. A taxa de VRE também aumentou significativamente de 2,5% para 15,5% (p < 0,001). Todos os VRE apresentaram genótipo VanA e CIM >256µg/mL para vancomicina. A maioria (89,5%) dos VRE pertencia à espécie E. faecium e foram resistentes à ampicilina e quinolonas. Foi observado um aumento significativo na taxa de resistência à ampicilina, de 2,5% (2006) para 21,4% (2009). As taxas de resistência para gentamicina, cloranfenicol, tetraciclina e eritromicina diminuíram significativamente no período do estudo. Para as quinolonas, as taxas de resistência foram elevadas não alteraram significativamente, no período do estudo. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados do presente estudo mostram um aumento significativo na incidência de E. faecium resistentes à ampicilina e vancomicina.

O reconhecimiento dos eventos relacionados com o meio ambiente tem sido defendido como um instrumento relevante para prerservar a naturaleza. O objetivo deste trabalho foi validar marcadores moleculares previamente associados a genes que conferem resistência à ferrugem-da-folha, em genótipos brasileiros de trigo. Cinco marcadores STS e SCAR, identificados como associados aos alelos de resistência dos genes Lr1, Lr9, Lr10 e Lr24, foram avaliados por PCR, em 25 genótipos de trigo com conhecida presença ou ausência desses alelos. O marcador STS, associado ao alelo de resistência do gene Lr1, não foi eficiente em identificar genótipos brasileiros que possuem este alelo de resistência. Os marcadores STS e SCAR, associados a Lr9, Lr10 e Lr24, foram eficientes na identificação de plantas que possuem o alelo de resistência desses genes, e podem ser utilizados na seleção por marcadores da resistência à ferrugem-da-folha, em genótipos brasileiros de trigo.The objective of this work was to validate molecular markers previously associated to leaf rust resistance genes in Brazilian wheat genotypes. Five STS and SCAR markers identified as associated to the resistance alleles of the genes Lr1, Lr9, Lr10 and Lr24 were tested by PCR in 25 Brazilian wheat genotypes with known presence or absence of these alleles. The STS marker associated to Lr1 was not efficient in identifying Brazilian genotypes carrying its resistance allele. The STS and SCAR markers associated to Lr9, Lr10 and Lr24 are efficient in identifying plants carrying the resistance alleles for these genes, and therefore, can be used for marker-assisted selection of leaf rust resistance in Brazilian wheat genotypes.

Este trabalho identificou variedades de Cryptococcus neoformans e avaliou a suscetibilidade a antifúngicos pelo protocolo M27-A2 do National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards em isolados de 35 pacientes do Hospital Escola da Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro. A variedade gatti foi identificada em 11.4% (nº = 4) dos casos. A concentração inibitória mínima (mg/ml) dos isolados de Cryptococcus neoformans neoformans variou de 0,062 - 2,000 (anfotericina B), 0,250 - 8,000 (fluconazol), 0,062 - 1,000 (itraconazol) e 0,125 - 1,000 (cetoconazol). A variedade gattii apresentou concentração inibitória mínima de 0,125 - 2,000 (anfotericina B), 0,250 - 16,00 (fluconazol), 0,062 - 1,000 (itraconazol) e 0,125 - 4,000 (cetoconazol). Detectaram-se 2 isolados resistentes ao itraconazol e 2 a anfotericina B (1 isolado de cada variedade por antifúngico). Os dados mostram a importância da determinação da variedade e da concentração inibitória mínima de isolados de Cryptococcus neoformans para monitorar o desenvolvimento de resistência e possibilitar uma terapia mais adequada na criptococose.This study identified Cryptococcus neoformans varieties isolated from 35 patients at teaching hospital of the Federal University of the Triângulo Mineiro and evaluated the susceptibility to antifungal agents among these samples using the protocol M27-A2 from the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards. The gattii variety was identified in 11.4% of the cases (n = 4). The minimum inhibitory concentration (mg/ml) of Cryptococcus neoformans neoformans isolates ranged from 0.062 to 2.000 (amphotericin B), 0.250 to 8.000 (fluconazole), 0.062 to 1.000 (itraconazole) and 0.125 to 1.000 (ketoconazole). The gattii variety presented a minimum inhibitory concentration range of 0.125 to 2.000 (amphotericin B), 0.250 to 16.00 (fluconazole), 0.062 to 1.000 (itraconazole) and 0.125 to 4.000 (ketoconazole). Two isolates resistant to itraconazole and two resistant to amphotericin B (one isolate of each variety per antifungal agent) were found. These data show the importance of determining the variety and minimum inhibitory concentration of Cryptococcus neoformans isolates, in order to monitor resistance development and enable better treatment for cryptococcosis.

PURPOSE: Evaluating histologically the silicone peri-implant coated by polyurethane inflammation associated to the use of anti-microbial and bacterial contamination. METHODS: It was used 35 Wistar rats. The animals were divided in seven groups: I - Control; II - implant cavity contamination with10 bacteria/ml; III - implant cavity contamination with 10 bacteria/ml; IV - implant cavity contamination with 10 bacteria/ml; V - identical contamination to group II and implant immersions in anti-microbial solution; VI - identical contamination in group III and implant immersions in the anti-microbial solution; VII - identical contamination of group IV and implant immersions in anti-microbial solution. It was evaluated morphometrically the peri-implant capsules after 30 days of introduction. RESULTS: The factors with more discriminating power were the giants cells of a strange body and the mononuclear. There was no correlation between the bacterial concentrations and the histological alterations. CONCLUSION: 1) The histological standard of the inflammatory reaction around the silicone implant coated with polyurethan is chronic granulomatosis type of a strange body; 2) There isn´t correlation between concentration of Staphylococcus epidermidis and histological changes; 3) The use of anti-microbial solution decreased the mononuclear cell reactions, with the increase of giant cells in a strange body.OBJETIVO: Avaliar, histologicamente, a reação inflamatória aos implantes de silicone revestidos por poliuretano, com contaminação bacteriana, associada ou não ao uso de antimicrobianos. MÉTODOS: Utilizou-se 35 ratos Wistar. Os animais foram divididos em 7 grupos: I- Controle, II- contaminação da cavidade do implante com 10¹ bactérias/ml, III- contaminação da cavidade do implante com 10³ bactérias/ml, IV- contaminação da cavidade do implante com 10(5) bactérias/ml, V- contaminação idêntica ao grupo II e imersão dos implantes em solução antimicrobiana, VI- contaminação idêntica do grupo III e imersão dos implantes em solução antimicrobiana, VII- contaminação idêntica do grupo IV e imersão dos implantes em solução antimicrobiana. Avaliou-se morfometricamente as cápsulas peri-implantes após 30 dias da introdução. RESULTADOS: Os fatores com maior poder discriminante foram as células gigantes de corpo estranho e os mononucleares. Não houve correlação entre as concentrações bacterianas e as alterações histológicas. CONCLUSÕES: 1) O padrão histológico da reação inflamatória ao redor dos implantes de silicone revestidos com poliuretano é do tipo crônica granulomatosa de corpo estranho; 2) Não há correlação entre a concentração de bactérias Staphylococcus epidermidis e as alterações morfométricas; 3) O uso de solução antimicrobiana diminui a reação de células mononucleares, com aumento de células gigantes de corpo estranho.

O risco de morbidade/mortalidade por doenças cardiovasculares em pacientes com doença renal crônica (DRC) é elevado, sendo imprescindível a instituição de uma terapia anti-hipertensiva eficaz. A baixa adesão ou não adesão ao tratamento farmacológico anti-hipertensivo prejudica o alcance dos resultados terapêuticos no retardo da progressão da DRC. Objetivou-se estudar a adesão à terapia anti-hipertensiva em 120 pacientes com DRC em hemodiálise. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, descritivo, com abordagem quantitativa, realizado entre maio a junho de 2011 na Clínica de Doenças Renais de Imperatriz – MA. Os dados foram obtidos através da análise dos prontuários dos pacientes e da aplicação de roteiro de entrevista para a coleta de dados sociodemográficos, clínicos e relacionados ao tratamento medicamentoso anti-hipertensivo. O nível de adesão ao tratamento foi estimado pelo Teste de Morisky- Green. A maioria dos pacientes é do sexo masculino (69,2%), possui idade inferior a 60 anos (69,2%), é analfabeta ou possui apenas o ensino fundamental (79,2%) e possui baixa renda mensal (90,8%). A hipertensão arterial foi a doença de base prevalente. Houve predomínio da politerapia em 78,3% dos casos. Os betabloqueadores foram os anti-hipertensivos mais utilizados, seguidos pelos bloqueadores dos canais de cálcio e agentes que atuam no sistema renina-angiotensina. O Teste de Morisky-Green apontou que 58,3% dos entrevistados apresentaram nível elevado de adesão à terapia medicamentosa. A falta de acesso aos medicamentos foi o principal motivo relatado pelos pacientes para não seguirem adequadamente o tratamento anti-hipertensivo. Verificou-se a necessidade de melhorias na assistência farmacêutica a estes pacientes e a implementação de estratégias para aumentar a adesão ao tratamento.Palavras-chave: Adesão à medicação. ABSTRACT The risk of morbidity/mortality from cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is high, it is imperative to establishing an effective antihypertensive therapy. Low adherence or nonadherence to antihypertensive drug treatment impairs the achievement of therapeutic outcomes in CKD progression delay. Thus, this work aimed to study the adherence to antihypertensive therapy in 120 patients with CKD on hemodialysis. This descriptive and crosssectional study was conducted between May and June 2011 in Clínica de Doenças Renais de Imperatriz – MA using the Morisky-Green Test to measure adherence level to pharmacotherapy. Variables that may be related to adherence level were also investigated, such as sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and pharmacotherapy related factors. Based on this test, the patients were characterized as presenting either high (58.3%) or median (41.7%) degree of compliance. Statistical analysis showed no significant association between the degree of adherence and sex, marital status, origin, monthly income and duration of hemodialysis, but this association was observed with age, education, occupation and race. Although patients presented satisfactory levels of adherence, there was the need for improvements in pharmaceutical care to these patients and implement strategies to increase treatment adherence.Keywords: Medication adherence. Com o objetivo de ampliar o período de conservação e de comercialização do caqui 'Fuyu', foram testadas alternativas para a manutenção da qualidade dos frutos. Realizaram-se três experimentos: 1) os frutos foram armazenados na temperatura de 18 ± 3°C e UR de 80 ± 5%, como ou sem aplicação de 1-MCP, avaliados na colheita aos 7 e aos 14 dias; 2) os frutos foram conservados na temperatura de 0 ± 1,0°C e UR de 95 ± 5%, com ou sem aplicação de 1-MCP, avaliados na colheita e aos 45 + 3 dias de comercialização simulada, e 3) os frutos foram armazenados em atmosfera modificada (AM) com filmes de polietileno de baixa densidade (PEBD) de 80µm de espessura e em temperatura de 0 ± 1,0°C e UR de 95 ± 5%, com ou sem aplicação de 1-MCP, avaliados na colheita, aos 48 + 4 dias e aos 48 + 10 dias de comercialização simulada (CS) na temperatura de 18°C. A concentração de 1-MCP utilizada nos tratamentos específicos foi de 500ppb/2h. As principais análises realizadas compreenderam: firmeza da polpa (FP), cor e escurecimento de epiderme (EE). Os caquis do experimento 2 perderam a qualidade de comercialização antes de alcançarem os 30 dias de estocagem. O uso de AM associada à refrigeração manteve frutos com FP acima de 40 N, além de prevenir a ocorrência de EE, após 48 dias de armazenamento mais 10 dias de CS. A obtenção destes índices proporcionou a manutenção da qualidade dos caquis por 48 dias de câmara mais 10 dias de CS no ar ambiente (18°C).With the objective of to extend the conservation period and commercialization of the 'Fuyu' persimmon fruit, alternatives to mantain fruits quality were tested. Tree experiments were accomplished to develop the work: 1) storage at the ambient temperature (AT): Temperature (T) of 18 ± 3°C and relative humidity (RH) of 80 ± 5%, with or without application of 1-MCP and evaluated in the crop, at 7 and 14 days; 2): cold storaged (CS): T of 0 ± 1,0°C and RH of 95 ± 5%, with or without application of 1-MCP, appraised in the crop and 45 + 3 days of simulated commercialization; and 3) CS and modified atmosphere (MA) with films of polyethylene of low density (PELD) with 80mm of thickness: T of 0 ± 1,0°C and RH of 95 ± 5%, with or without application of 1-MCP, appraised in the crop, 48 of CS and 10 days of simulated commercialization. The concentration of 1-MCP used in the specific treatments was of 500ppb/2h. The main physiochemical analyses accomplished were: pulp firmness (PF), color and epidermis browning (EB). The persimmon fruits of the experiment 2, maintained in CS, lost the commercialization quality before reaching 30 days of storage. The use of MA associated to CS, maintained the fruits with PF above 40 N, besides preventing the occurrence of EB. The yielded results showed that the maintenance of persimmon fruits quality can be kept for 48 days at CS and more 10 days of simulated commercialization at the environment temperature.

Introduction Insects have been described as mechanical vectors of nosocomial infections. Methods Non-biting flying insects were collected inside a pediatric ward and neonatal-intensive care unit (ICU) of a Brazilian tertiary hospital. Results Most (86.4%) of them were found to carry one or more species of bacteria on their external surfaces. The bacteria isolated were Gram-positive bacilli (68.2%) or cocci (40.9%), and Gram-negative bacilli (18.2%). Conclusions Insects collected inside a hospital were carrying pathogenic bacteria; therefore, one must consider the possibility they may act as mechanical vectors of infections, in especially for debilitated or immune-compromised patients in the hospital environments where the insects were collected.

Através de meios de cultura, foi pesquisada a posição de colônias de Staphylococcus aureus em colchões, visando avaliar a eficácia do procedimento de limpeza e desinfecção dos leitos do Hospital Escola da Faculdade de Medicina do Triângulo Mineiro (Uberaba). Foram analisadas amostras de 50 colchões no período de 22 de outubro de 2000 a 16 de janeiro de 2001. As amostras foram coletadas e semeadas, pela técnica de esgotamento, em dois meios de cultivo (ágar sangue e manitol) com posterior realização de provas de catalase e coagulase . Na análise estatística, foram utilizados os testes não paramétricos Mann-Whitney, Kruswkal- Wallis e Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Test com nível de significância p < 0,05. Foram utilizadas 600 placas de meio de cultivo. Houve crescimento em 94 (15,6%), sendo 82 (87,2%) antes e 12 (12,8%) após a limpeza e desinfecção. Em relação à posição no leito, as amostras semeadas no meio de cultivo com manitol mostraram que não houve redução significativa na posição inferior do leito (p>0,05). Os resultados apontam e alertam para falhas no procedimento de limpeza e desinfecção dos leitos hospitalares por nós estudados.By means of culture medium, it was researched the position of the colony of Staphylococcus aureus on the mattress, to evaluate the efficciuoness of the methods of cleaning and disinfection of the river bed in the Faculdade de Medicina do Triângulo Mineiro's School Hospital (Uberaba). It were evaluated fifty mattresses on the period of October 22th (2000) to January 16th (2001). The samples were collected and grown, the exhaustion techinique draining, on two different nutrient bases (blood agar and mannitol salt agar) followed by catalase and coagulase tests. For the statistical analysis, were used non-parametrics tests Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Test with significance level p < 0,05 were used. Six hundred dishes of culture medium have been used. There was growing in 94 (15,6%), being 82 (87,2%) before and 12 (12,8%) after cleaning and disinfection. Concerning the position on the bed, the samples obtained from mannitol salt agar medium showed significant retention on the lower position of bed. The results alert to flaws in the procedure for cleaning and disinfection from the mattresses studied by us.

Using adhesive colored cards, 1,016 flying insects were captured in a neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital. Homoptera were the most common (84.7%), and attraction based on card color was demonstrated. Insects are mechanical vectors of pathogens, and this work demonstrates the necessity and the relevance of insect control in hospital environments.
