Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a widely used approach for a short-range contactless data exchange, i.e., employed in billing systems. During the last years, unauthorized access has become an issue, as it has been proven on numerous unpleasant occasions. A typical theft scheme is based on approaching a victim with a card reader. However, a straightforward adaptation of the reader’s antenna elements allows performing the attack from a distance, opening a severe security loophole. Here, we propose and demonstrate hardware-based protection capable of preventing a far-field attack of this kind. Our solution is based on an RFID chip shielding with an opaque metal. The Faraday-type of the enclosure has a small aperture, which suppresses electromagnetic field leakage from the device. This property affects both up and down interrogation links, virtually making the far-field attack impossible. Activation of the card is done by holding it in hand – this way, it is made accessible to an authorized readout, which still remains wireless. The physical principle of the operation is placing a high-index dielectric structure next to a subwavelength aperture, making it electromagnetically larger and, as a result, supporting the field leakage. Our experimental prototype, validated by several different users, shows the capability to diminish far-field attacks on UHF RFID tags. This hardware security solution can find usage in numerous applications, such as biometric passports, credit cards, and many others, where unauthorized access to sensitive data is highly undesirable.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a widely used wireless technology for contactless data exchange. Owing to international standardization and one-way security nature of the communication protocol, RFID tags, holding sensitive information, may be a subject to theft. One of the major security loopholes is the so-called far-field attack, where unauthorized interrogation is performed from a distance, bypassing the user’s verification. This loophole is a penalty of using a dipole-like RFID tag antenna, leaking wireless information to the far-field. Here we introduce a new concept of anapole-enabled security, prohibiting far-field attacks by utilizing fundamental laws of physics. Our design is based on radiationless electromagnetic states (anapoles), which have high near-field concentration and theoretically nulling far-field scattering. The first property enables performing data readout from several centimeters (near-field), while the second prevents attacks from a distance, regardless an eavesdropper’s radiated power and antenna gain. Our realization is based on a compact 3 cm high-index ceramic core–shell structure, functionalized with a thin metal wire and an integrated circuit to control the tag. Switching scheme was designed to provide a modulation between two radiation-less anapole states, blocking both up and down links for a far-field access. The anapole tag demonstrates more than 20 dB suppression of far-field interrogation distance in respect with a standard commercial tag, while keeping the near-field performance at the same level. The proposed concept might significantly enhance the RFID communication channel in cases, where information security prevails over cost constrains.

Creeping waves traveling around a volumetric electromagnetic scatterer provide a significant contribution to its radar cross-section. While quite a few efforts were devoted to suppressing creeping waves as a part of radar countermeasures, here we utilize specially engineered creeping waves to our advantage to create broadband, all-angle, and polarization scatterers. Metalized spherical surfaces, patterned with corona virus-like spikes are designed to provide a broadband constructive interference between the specular reflection and creeping waves, elevating the scattering cross-section. The demonstrated miniature corona scatterers, utilizing both cascaded resonant phenomena and traveling wave interference to tailor electromagnetic interactions, outperform a resonant dipole in terms of amplitude and bandwidth quite significantly. Our experimental samples are fabricated with an additive manufacturing technique, where a 3D-printed plastic skeleton is subsequently metalized. Micron-thick layers are deposited with an electroless method and allow governing electromagnetic interactions as if the entire object was made of solid metal. Lightweight, all-angle, all-polarization, and broadband compact scatterers such as these have numerous applications, including radar deception, electromagnetic beckoning, and many others.

Modern radar systems are designed to have high Doppler tolerance to detect fast-moving targets. This means range and Doppler estimations are inevitably coupled, opening pathways to concealing objects by imprinting artificial Doppler signatures on the reflected echoes. Proper temporal control of the backscattered phase can cause the investigating radar to estimate wrong range and velocity, thus cloaking the real position and trajectory of the scatterer. This deception method is exploited here theoretically for arbitrary Doppler tolerant waveforms and then tested experimentally on an example of the linear frequency modulated radar, which is the most common waveform of that class used in practice. The method allows retaining radio silence with a semi passive (battery assisted) approach that can work well with time-dependent metasurfaces. Furthermore, as an insight into new capabilities, we demonstrate that temporally concealed objects could even be made to appear closer than they truly are without violating the laws of relativity.

Carbon dots keep attracting attention in multidisciplinary fields, motivating the development of new compounds. Phenylenediamine C6H4(NH2)2 dots are known to exhibit colorful emission, which depends on size, composition, and the functional surface groups, forming those structures. While quite a few fabrication protocols have been developed, the quantum yield of phenylenediamine dots still does not exceed 50% owing to undesired fragment formation during carbonization. Here, we demonstrate that an ethylene glycol-based environment allows obtaining multicolor high-quantum-yield phenylenediamine carbon dots. In particular, a kinetic realization of solvothermal synthesis in acidic environments enhances carbonization reaction yield for meta phenylenediamine compounds and leads to quantum yields, exciting 60%. Reaction yield after the product's purification approaches 90%. Furthermore, proximity of metal ions (Nd3+, Co3+, La3+) can either enhance or quench the emission, depending on the concentration. Optical monitoring of the solution allows performing an accurate detection of ions at picomolar concentrations. An atomistic model of carbon dots was developed to confirm that the functional surface group positioning within the molecular structure has a major impact on dots' physicochemical properties. The high performance of new carbon dots paves the way toward their integration in numerous applications, including imaging, sensing, and therapeutics.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a mature technology that allows contactless reading of data via a wireless communication link. While communication protocols in this field are subject to international regulations, there are plenty of opportunities to improve hardware realization of antenna devices that support this technology. In particular, readout range extension and miniaturization of passive RFID tags is an important challenge with far-reaching goals. Here, we introduce and analyze a new concept of high-permittivity ceramic tag that relies on different physical principles. Instead of using conduction currents in metallic wires to drive electronic chips and generate electromagnetic radiation, high-permittivity components rely on excitation of displacement currents. Those are efficiently converted to actual electric current which drives the memory chip. Practical aspects of this approach are improved robustness to environmental fluctuations, footprint reduction, and readout range extension. In particular, our high-permittivity ceramic ( $\varepsilon ~ \sim ~100$ ) elements have demonstrated a 25% reading range improvement in comparison to commercial tags. In case when state-of-the-art readers and RFID chips are used, the readout distances of the developed ceramic tags can reach 22 m. This number can be further extended with improved matching circuits. Miniature RFID tags, capable to establish long-range communication channels, can find use in many applications, including retail, security, Internet of Things, and many others.

Suppressing reflections from material boundaries has always been an objective, common to many disciplines, where wave phenomena play a role. While impedance difference between materials necessarily leads to a wave reflection, introducing matching elements can almost completely suppress this phenomenon. However, many impedance matching approaches are based on resonant conditions, which come at a price of narrow bandwidth operation. Although various impedance matching architectures have been developed in the past, many of them fail to produce a broadband and flat (ripple-free) transmission, particularly in the presence of strong chromatic dispersion. Here we propose and demonstrate an approach for designing an optimal matching stack capable of providing a flat broadband transmission even in the presence of significant group velocity dispersion. As an experimental example for the method verification, we used a strong modal dispersion in a rectangular waveguide, operating close to a mode cut-off. The waveguide core consists of alternating polymer sections with a variable filling factor, realized using additive manufacturing. As a result, a broadband matching in the range of 7-8GHz was demonstrated and proved to significantly outperform the standard binomial transformer solution. The proposed method can find use across different disciplines, including optics, acoustics and wireless communications, where undesired reflections can significantly degrade system’s performances.

Semiconductor nanowires exhibit numerous capabilities to advance the development of future optoelectronic devices. Among the III-V material family, gallium phosphide (GaP) is an attractive platform with low optical absorption and high nonlinear susceptibility, making it especially promising for nanophotonic applications. However, investigation of single nanostructures and their waveguiding properties remains challenging owing to typically planar experimental arrangements. Here we study the linear and nonlinear waveguiding optical properties of a single GaP nanowire in a special experimental layout, where an optically trapped structure is aligned along its major axis. We demonstrate efficient second harmonic generation in individual nanowires and unravel phase matching conditions, linking between linear guiding properties of the structure and its nonlinear tensorial susceptibility. The capability to pick up single nanowires, sort them with the aid of optomechanical manipulation and accurately position pre-tested structures opens a new avenue for the generation of optoelectronic origami-type devices.

Low loss electromagnetic energy transport over long distances motivates the development of different types of waveguiding systems. Requirements of high quality optically polished waveguide surfaces needed in high-frequency applications and low-cost manufacturing are practically incompatible in current realizations. Here we demonstrate a new paradigm solution, based on surface functionalization with subsequent electroless plating of conductive micron smooth copper layer on the inner surface of flexible non-conducting poly-carbonate tubes. The structure was shown to support reasonable guiding performances (∼5·10−3 cm−1) at Ku-band. The mechanically flexible design of the system allows shaping the waveguide network almost on demand. In particular, an efficient energy guiding over a closed loop with 8 lambda radius was demonstrated. The new platform of high quality metalized flexible waveguiding systems opens new opportunities in designs of cheap and efficient networks, operating over a broad spectral range, approaching tens of GHz and even higher.

Motion signatures of nonstationary electromagnetic bodies are imprinted in their scattering spectrum. While the Doppler frequency shift holds information about the velocity of its center of mass, internal degrees of freedom in a nonrigid body, such as rotation and vibration, introduce nontrivial spectral distortions, termed micro-Doppler signatures. Contemporary analytic characterization of such signatures typically neglects subwavelength electromagnetic coupling, which can dominate the scattering signatures of motion. To address this overlooked scattering regime, a theory of moving coupled dipoles is used to model a moving nonrigid body. The method is verified experimentally in the microwave regime, demonstrating remote sensing of subwavelength information. The method can be useful for analyzing and characterizing effects that frequently emerge in radar science, healthcare monitoring, optical manipulation of particles, and many other applications, where remote sensing and classification of motion are important.

Artificially created media allow employing material parameters as additional valuable degrees of freedom in tailoring electromagnetic scattering. In particular, metamaterials with either negative permeability or permittivity allow creating deeply subwavelength resonant structures with relatively high scattering cross-sections. However, the equivalence principle allows replacing volumetric structures with properly designed curved impedance surfaces, ensuring the same electromagnetic properties. Here, we examine this statement from a practical standpoint, considering two structures, having a dipolar electric resonance at the same frequency. The first realization is based on arrays of inductively loaded electric dipoles printed on stacked circuit boards (a volumetric metamaterial), while the second structure utilizes a 4-wire spiral on a spherical surface (surface impedance realization). An intermediate conclusion is that the surface implementation tends to outperform the volumetric counterparts in the scenario when a single resonance is involved. However, in the case where multiple resonances are overlapping and lossy materials are involved, volumetric realization can have an advantage. The discussed structures are of significant importance to the field of electrically small antennas, superdirective antennas, and superscatterers, which find use in wireless communications and radar applications, to name just a few.

Mesoscopic photonic systems with tailored optical responses have great potential to open new frontiers in implantable biomedical devices. However, biocompatibility is typically a problem, as engineering of optical properties often calls for using toxic compounds and chemicals, unsuitable for in vivo applications. Here, a unique approach to biofriendly delivery of optical resonances is demonstrated. It is shown that the controllable infusion of gold nanoseeds into polycrystalline sub-micrometer vaterite spherulites gives rise to a variety of electric and magnetic Mie resonances, producing a tuneable mesoscopic optical metamaterial. The 3D reconstruction of the spherulites demonstrates the capability of controllable gold loading with volumetric filling factors exceeding 28%. Owing to the biocompatibility of the constitutive elements, "golden vaterite" paves the way to introduce designer-made Mie resonances to cutting-edge biophotonic applications. This concept is exemplified by showing efficient laser heating of gold-filled vaterite spherulites at red and near-infrared wavelengths, highly desirable in photothermal therapy, and photoacoustic tomography.

Bioinspired fluorescence, being widely explored for imaging purposes, faces challenges in delivering bright biocompatible sources. While quite a few techniques have been developed to reach this goal, encapsulation of high-quantum yield fluorescent dyes in natural biological forms suggest achieving superior light-emitting characteristics, approaching amplified spontaneous emission and even lasing. Here we compare gain capabilities of highly concentrated Rhodamine B solutions with a newly synthesized biocompatible peptide derivative hybrid polymer/peptide material, RhoB-PEG1300-F6, which contains the fluorescent covalently bound dye. While concentration quenching effects limit the maximal achievable gain of dissolved Rhodamine B, biocompatible conjugation allows elevating amplification coefficients towards moderately high values. In particular, Rhodamine B, anchored to the peptide derivative material, demonstrates gain of 22–23 cm−1 for a 10−2 M solution, while a pure dye solution possesses 25% smaller values at the same concentration. New biocompatible fluorescent agents pave ways to demonstrate lasing in living organisms and can be further introduced to therapeutic applications, if proper solvents are found.

Quite a few efforts, concentrating on antennas design, have been explored, pushing interrogating distances to tens of meters. Here we develop a new concept of miniature high-permittivity ceramic tags, capable to extend reading range quite substantially. Instead of using conduction currents in metallic wires to drive electronic chips and provide electromagnetic radiation, our approach relies on excitation of displacement currents in high-permittivity resonators. Practical aspects of this approach include improved robustness to environmental fluctuations, footprint reduction, and readout range extension. Our architecture is shown to perform reading range up to 19 meters, if state of the art electronic components is in use, having the smallest size among long-range RFID passive tags. Miniature RFID tags, capable to establish long-range communication channels, can find use in numerous applications.

Electromagnetic scattering on subwavelength structures keeps attracting attention owing to abroad range of possible applications, where this phenomenon is in use. Fundamental limits of scattering cross-section, being well understood in spherical geometries, are overlooked in cases of low-symmetry resonators. Here, we revise the notion of superscattering and link this property with symmetry groups of the scattering potential. We demonstrate pathways to spectrally overlap several eigenmodes of a resonator in a way they interfere constructively and enhance the scattering cross-section. As a particular example, we demonstrate spectral overlapping of several electric and magnetic modes in a subwavelength entirely homogeneous ceramic resonator. The optimized structures show the excess of a dipolar scattering cross-section limit for a sphere up to a factor of four. The revealed rules, which link symmetry groups with fundamental scattering limits, allow performing and assessing designs of subwavelength supperscatterers, which can find a use in label-free imaging, compact antennas, long-range radio frequency identification, and many other fields., 9 pages, 5 figures

Focused laser beams allow controlling the mechanical motion of objects and can serve as a tool for assembling micro and nanostructures in space. While small particles mainly experience attractive gradient forces and repulsive radiation pressure, introducing additional flexibility suggests approaching new capabilities. Herein, optical forces acting on a high refractive index sphere in a focused Gaussian beam are analyzed and new regimes are revealed. Multipolar analysis allows separating an optical force into interception and recoil components, resulting in different mechanical actions. In particular, interplaying interception radial forces and multipolar resonances within a particle can lead to either trapping or antitrapping, depending on the system parameters. At the same time, the recoil force generates a significant azimuthal component along with an angulardependent radial force. Those contributions enable enhancing either trapping or antitrapping and also introduce bending reactions. These effects are linked to the far-field multipole interference and, specifically, to asymmetric scattering patterns. The latter approach is extremely useful, as it allows assessing the nature of optomechanical motion by observing far-fields. Multipolar engineering of optical forces, being quite a general approach, is not necessarily linked to simple spherical shapes and paves a way to new possibilities in microfluidic applications, including sorting and microassembly

Metamaterials are artificially created media, which allow introducing additional degrees of freedom into electromagnetic design by controlling constitutive material parameters. Reconfigurable time-dependent metamaterials can further enlarge those capabilities by introducing a temporal variable as an additional controllable parameter. Here we demonstrate a first-of-its-kind reconfigurable volumetric metamaterial-based scatterer, wherein the electromagnetic properties are controlled dynamically with light. In particular, hybridized resonances in arrays of split ring resonators give rise to a collective mode that presents properties of artificial high-frequency magnetism for centimeter waves. Resonant behavior of each individual ring is controlled with a photocurrent, which allows the fast tuning of macroscopic effective permeability. Thus, the artificial gigahertz magnon resonant excitation within a subwavelength spherical scatterer is governed by light intensity. Four-dimensional control over electromagnetic scattering in both space and time opens new venues for modern applications, including wireless communications and automotive radars to name just a few.

The concept of lumped optical nanoelements (or metactronics), wherein nanometer-scale structures act as nanoinductors, nanocapacitors and nanoresistors, has attracted a great deal of attention as a simple toolbox for engineering different nanophotonic devices in analogy with microelectronics. While recent studies of the topic have been predominantly focused on linear functionalities, nonlinear dynamics in microelectronic devices plays a crucial role and provides a majority of functions, employed in modern applications. Here, we extend the metactronics paradigm and add nonlinear dynamical modalities to those nanophotonic devices that have never been associated with optical nanoantennas. Specifically, we show that nonlinear dimer nanoantennae can operate in the regimes of tristable and astable multivibrators as well as chaos generators. The physical mechanism behind these modalities relies on the Kerr-type nonlinearity of nanoparticles in the dimer enhanced by a dipolar localized surface plasmon resonance. This allows one to provide a positive nonlinear feedback at moderate optical intensities, leading to the desired dynamical behavior via tuning the driving field parameters. Our findings shed light on a novel class of nonlinear nanophotonic devices with a tunable nonlinear dynamical response.

Concealing objects from interrogation has been a primary objective since the integration of radars into surveillance systems. Metamaterial-based invisibility cloaking, which was considered a promising solution, did not yet succeed in delivering reliable performance against real radar systems, mainly due to its narrow operational bandwidth. Here we propose an approach, which addresses the issue from a signal-processing standpoint and, as a result, is capable of coping with the vast majority of unclassified radar systems by exploiting vulnerabilities in their design. In particular, we demonstrate complete concealment of a 0.25 square meter moving metal plate from an investigating radar system, operating in a broad frequency range approaching 20% bandwidth around the carrier of 1.5GHz. The key element of the radar countermeasure is a temporally modulated coating. This auxiliary structure is designed to dynamically and controllably adjust the reflected phase of the impinging radar signal, which acquires a user-defined Doppler shift. A special case of interest is imposing a frequency shift that compensates for the real Doppler signatures originating from the motion of the target. In this case the radar will consider the target static, even though it is moving. As a result, the reflected echo will be discarded by the clutter removal filter, which is an inherent part of any modern radar system that is designed to operate in real conditions. This signal-processing loophole allows rendering the target invisible to the radar even though it scatters electromagnetic radiation. This application claims the benefit of patent number 273995, filed on April 16 2020.

The state of the art in optical biosensing is focused on reaching high sensitivity at a single wavelength by using any type of optical resonance. This common strategy, however, disregards the promising possibility of simultaneous measurements of a bioanalyte’s refractive index over a broadband spectral domain. Here, we address this issue by introducing the approach of in-fibre multispectral optical sensing (IMOS). The operating principle relies on detecting changes in the transmission of a hollow-core microstructured optical fibre when a bioanalyte is streamed through it via liquid cells. IMOS offers a unique opportunity to measure the refractive index at 42 wavelengths, with a sensitivity up to ~3000 nm per refractive index unit (RIU) and a figure of merit reaching 99 RIU−1 in the visible and near-infra-red spectral ranges. We apply this technique to determine the concentration and refractive index dispersion for bovine serum albumin and show that the accuracy meets clinical needs., Optical biosensing: analyzing biological fluids at many wavelengths In-fibre multispectral optical sensing (IMOS) can detect and analyze the optical properties of biological liquids at multiple wavelengths simultaneously, using hollow-core microstructured optical fibres (HC-MOFs). Researchers in Russia and Israel, led by Dmitry Gorin at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow and Roman Noskov at Tel Aviv University, developed IMOS and demonstrated its potential using solutions of the bovin serum albumin. IMOS detects changes in the transmission of light in the fibre when the fluid being analyzed flows through the fibre’s hollow core. Refractive index values were measured at 42 wavelength’s of visible and near-infra-red light simultaneously, with potential to measure many more. IMOS is sufficiently accurate for clinical analysis, including detecting the presence and concentration of specific biomolecules in blood. The procedure could supply immediate diagnostic results relevant to a variety of medical conditions, including diabetes and cancer.

We present a new approach for broadband impedance matching, overcoming structural and material dispersion. The transformer constitutes a critically-coupled white light cavity, implemented by a dual-section structure. The result is minimal reflectivity over broad spectral band. The approach is demonstrated in the millimeter waves band.

The control of photoluminescence processes, via the design of composite materials with engineered electromagnetic properties, is of great interest for the development of many application areas ranging from biophysics to quantum optical technologies. Approaches providing broadband enhancements of emission, not limited to resonant nanostructures, are particularly advantageous. We discuss how various photoluminescence processes, including conventional and dipolar-forbidden spontaneous emission, as well as Forster resonance energy transfer, are altered nearby and inside plasmonic hyperbolic metamaterials. They provide a flexible platform for engineering broadband Purcell enhancements due to their peculiar electromagnetic mode structure controlled by the nonlocal response of the metamaterial.

An efficient modulation of backscattered energy is one of the key requirements for enabling efficient wireless communication channels. Typical architectures, being based on either electronically or mechanically modulated reflectors, cannot be downscaled to subwavelengths dimensions by design. Here we show that integrating high-index dielectric materials with tunable subwavelength resonators allows achieving an efficient backscattering modulation, keeping a footprint of an entire structure small. An interference between high-order Mie resonances leads to either enhancement or suppression of the backscattering, depending on a control parameter. In particular, a ceramic core-shell, driven by an electronically tunable split ring resonator was shown to provide a backscattering modulation depth as high as tens of the geometrical cross-section of the structure. The design was optimized towards maximizing reading range of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and shown to outperform existing commercial solutions by orders of magnitude in terms of the modulation efficiency. The proposed concept of multipole engineering allows one to design a new generation of miniature beacons and modulators for wireless communication needs and other relevant applications.

It is widely believed that range resolution, the ability to distinguish between two closely situated targets, depends inversely on the bandwidth of the transmitted radar signal. Here we demonstrate a different type of ranging system, which possesses superior range resolution that is almost completely free of bandwidth limitations. By sweeping over the coherence length of the transmitted signal, the partially coherent radar experimentally demonstrates an improvement of over an order of magnitude in resolving targets, compared to standard coherent radars with the same bandwidth. A theoretical framework is developed to show that the resolution could be further improved without a bound, revealing a tradeoff between bandwidth and sweep time. This concept offers solutions to problems which require high range resolution and accuracy but available bandwidth is limited, as is the case for the autonomous car industry, optical imaging, and astronomy to name just few., Distinguishing between closely situated targets depends inversely on the bandwidth of the transmitted radar signal. Here, the authors demonstrate a type of ranging system which is not limited by bandwidth. They show an improvement of two orders of magnitude, compared to standard coherent radars with the same bandwidth.

A method for synthesizing any radar signal via post-processing is proposed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally for both pulsed and linear frequency modulated signals. The method does not require transmitting the investigated signal, nor does it require any hardware reconfiguration (such as fully programmable gate arrays), in contrast with ordinary software defined radars. Instead, the method is based on transmitting the ‘stepped frequency continuous wave' signal with a device such as a network analyzer. By obtaining the frequency response in the desired bandwidth (S-parameters), signal-specific digital filters can be applied in order to obtain the response of any other signal. By transforming the filtered frequency response into the time domain, the ordinary processing of such signals can take place in the digital domain. The advantages of different signals can therefore be used by a single optimized chip, simply by swapping its software.

Auxiliary nanostructures introduce additional flexibility into optomechanical manipulation schemes. Metamaterials and metasurfaces capable to control electromagnetic interactions at the near-field regions are especially beneficial for achieving improved spatial localization of particles, reducing laser powers required for trapping, and for tailoring directivity of optical forces. Here, optical forces acting on small particles situated next to anisotropic substrates, are investigated. A special class of hyperbolic metasurfaces is considered in details and is shown to be beneficial for achieving strong optical pulling forces in a broad spectral range.
