Meteoroids are pieces of asteroids and comets. They serve as unique probes to the physical and chemical properties of their parent bodies. We can derive some of these properties when meteoroids collide with the atmosphere of Earth and become a meteor or a bolide. Even more information can be obtained when meteoroids are mechanically strong and slow enough to drop meteorites. Through physical modeling of bright meteors, we describe their fragmentation in the atmosphere. We also derive their mechanical strength and the mass distribution of the fragments, some of which may hit the ground as meteorites. We developed a semi-automatic program for meteoroid fragmentation modeling using parallel genetic algorithms. This allowed us to determine the most probable fragmentation cascade of the meteoroid, and also to specify its initial mass and velocity. These parameters can be used in turn to derive the heliocentric orbit of the meteoroid and to place constraints on its likely age as a separate object. The program offers plausible solutions for the majority of fireballs we tested, and the quality of the solutions is comparable to that of manual solutions. The two solutions are not the same in detail, but the derived quantities, such as the fragment masses of the larger fragments and the proxy for their mechanical strength, are very similar. We present the description of an observation of a fireball recorded during the sunrise on July 15, 2021. Atmospheric trajectory, impact area, and heliocentric orbit were determined on the basis of three instrumental video records. The terminal part of the fireball was not instrumentally recorded due to clouds. Based on our computations, one meteorite was found in the predicted impact area by Polish searchers. The specimen was, soon after recovery, analyzed for the presence of short-lived radionuclides and the measurement confirms a very fresh fall, coinciding with the time of the fireball event. The recovered meteorite, Antonin, is an unbrecciated L5 chondrite with shock stage S3, weathering grade W0, and bulk density of 3.42 g cm−3. Unusual for L chondrites, it contains assemblages composed of metal and two sulfides, troilite and mackinawite. We interpret these assemblages to have been formed as products of shock metamorphism and post-shock annealing on the parent body. This suggests that the thermal and collisional history of the Antonin parent body was complex.

We observed the predicted outburst of the Alpha Monocerotid (AMO) meteor shower on 2019 November 22 with our modernized video and photographic cameras. Due to the short duration and moderate intensity of the outburst, atmospheric trajectories and radiants were obtained for only ten meteors, seven of which included velocities, magnitudes, and orbits. In addition, one incomplete video spectrum was captured. The radiants and orbits were found to be compatible with that of the 1995 outburst. The spectrum confirmed that AMO meteoroids are deficient in sodium. Unlike any other meteor shower, meteor end heights were found to be distributed along a constant level of 90 km for all meteors with magnitudes between +4 and −2 and with atmospheric trajectory lengths up to 40 km. We propose that Alpha Monocerotids were formed from a devolatilized and fragile cometary crust composed from relatively large fundamental grains.

The goal of this work is to determine if the dynamics of individual Taurid Complex (TC) objects are consistent with the formation of the complex via fragmentation of a larger body, or if the current orbital affinities between the TC members result from other dynamical processes. To this end, the orbital similarity through time of comet 2P/Encke, fifty-one Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) and sixteen Taurid fireballs was explored. Clones of each body were numerically simulated backwards in time, and epochs when significant fractions of the clones of any two bodies approached each other with both a low Minimum Orbit Intersection Distance and small relative velocity were identified. Only twelve pairs of bodies in our sample show such an association in the past 20 000 years, primarily circa 3200 BCE. These include 2P/Encke and NEAs 2004 TG10, 2005 TF50, 2005 UR, 2015 TX24, and several Southern Taurid fireballs. We find this orbital convergence to be compatible with the fragmentation of a large parent body five to six thousand years ago, resulting in the separation of 2P/Encke and several NEAs associated with the TC, as well as some larger meteoroids now recorded in the Taurid stream. However, the influence of purely dynamical processes may offer an alternative explanation for this orbital rapprochement without requiring a common origin between these objects. Near field acoustical signals from fireballs (ranges, Accepted to JASTP

The C1-ungrouped carbonaceous chondrite Flensburg fell in Germany on September 12, 2019, in the daytime. We determined the atmospheric trajectory, velocity, and heliocentric orbit using one dedicated AllSky6 meteor camera and three casual video records of the bolide. It was found that the meteorite originated in the vicinity of the 5:2 resonance with Jupiter at heliocentric distance of 2.82 AU. When combined with the bolide energy reported by the U.S. Government sensors (USGS), the pre-atmospheric diameter of the meteoroid was estimated to 2 - 3 meters and the mass to 10,000 - 20,000 kg. The meteoroid fragmented heavily in the atmosphere at heights of 46 - 37 km, under dynamic pressures of 0.7 - 2 MPa. The recovery of just one meteorite suggests that only a very small part of the original mass reached the ground. The bolide velocity vector was compared with that reported by the USGS. The internal structure and strength of small asteroids and large meteoroids is poorly known. Observation of bright fireballs in the Earth's atmosphere can prospect meteoroid structure by studying meteoroid fragmentation during the flight. Earlier evaluations showed that meteoroid strength is significantly lower than that of the recovered meteorites. We present detailed study of atmospheric fragmentation of seven meteorite falls, all ordinary chondrites, and 14 other fireballs, where meteorite fall was predicted but the meteorites, probably also ordinary chondrites, were not recovered. All observations were made by the autonomous observatories of the European Fireball Network and include detailed radiometric light curves. A model, called the semi-empirical fragmentation model, was developed to fit the light curves and decelerations. Videos showing individual fragments were available in some cases. The results demonstrated that meteoroids do not fragment randomly but in two distinct phases. The first phase typically corresponds to low strengths of 0.04 - 0.12 MPa. In 2/3 of cases, the first phase was catastrophic or nearly catastrophic with at least 40% of mass lost. The second phase corresponds to 0.9 - 5 MPa for confirmed meteorite falls and to somewhat lower strengths, from about 0.5 MPa for smaller meteoroids. All these strengths are lower than tensile strengths of ordinary chondritic meteorites cited in the literature, 20 - 40 MPa. We report a comprehensive analysis of the instrumentally observed meteorite fall \v{Z}\v{d}\'ar nad S\'azavou, which occurred in the Czech Republic on 9 December 2014 at 16:16:45-54 UT. The original meteoroid with an estimated initial mass of 150 kg entered the atmosphere with a speed of 21.89 km/s and began a luminous trajectory at an altitude of 98.06 km. At the maximum, it reached -15.26 absolute magnitude and terminated after an 9.16 s and 170.5 km long flight at an altitude of 24.71 km with a speed of 4.8 km/s. The average slope of the atmospheric trajectory to the Earth's surface was only 25.66{\deg}. Before its collision with Earth, the initial meteoroid orbited the Sun on a moderately eccentric orbit with perihelion near Venus orbit, aphelion in the outer main belt, and low inclination. During the atmospheric entry, the meteoroid severely fragmented at a very low dynamic pressure 0.016 MPa and further multiple fragmentations occurred at 1.4 - 2.5 MPa. Based on our analysis, so far three small meteorites classified as L3.9 ordinary chondrites totaling 87 g have been found almost exactly in the locations predicted for a given mass. The question of the existence of pairs and groups among the meteor showers is opened for a long time. The double station video observation of the 2006 Geminid meteor shower, one of the most active annual showers, is used for the search of such events. The atmospheric trajectories of the observed meteors, photometric masses, and both time and spatial distances of meteoroids in the atmosphere were determined using a double station video observation. Time gaps among them were analysed statistically. The Monte Carlo simulation was used for the determination of the probability of random pairings. Higher than expected number of candidates for pairs was found among 2006 Geminids. Evaluation of Poisson distribution shows that a significant fraction of them may be real cases. However, the Monte Carlo simulation did not confirm this result and provided a different view. Analysis of geometrical positions of candidate pairs also did not support the presence of real pairs and groups. Although we cannot exclude that some of them may be physically connected pairs, all the observed cases can be explained as the coincidental appearance of unrelated meteors., 8 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

A very bright bolide illuminated the sky over Denmark and neighboring countries on February 6th, 2016 at 21:07:18-23UT. It terminated by a multiple meteorite fall in the heavily populated area of the western outskirts of Copenhagen. Several meteorites classified as the H5/6 ordinary chondrites have been found shortly after the fall and total recovered mass reached almost 9 kg (Haack, 2016). Although this spectacular bolide has been reported by many casual witnesses, the instrumental records are very scarce, mainly due to bad weather over Denmark and neighboring countries. Despite it we were able to collect five instrumental records taken from different locations which were useful for the analysis of this event. We used three high resolution digital photographic images taken in Germany, one high resolution radiometric light curve taken by the northernmost Czech automated fireball observatory and one video record taken by a surveillance camera on the Danish west coast where a part of the fireball trajectory was recorded. It allowed us to reliably determine basic parameters defining the luminous trajectory of the bolide in the atmosphere and also heliocentric orbit of the initial meteoroid causing this spectacular meteorite fall. We found that this event was caused by a relatively fragile 50 cm meteoroid with initial mass about 250 kg. It entered the atmosphere with velocity of 14.5 km s −1 and quite steep entry angle of 62°. Its luminous flight started at 85.5 km and after 76 km long trajectory it terminated at 18.3 km. The heliocentric orbit of this meteoroid was of Apollo type with low inclination of 1° and perihelion distance just inside the Earth's orbit. It had a relatively large semimajor axis of 2.8 AU and aphelion distance 4.64 AU. It is the second largest aphelion distance among all meteorites with known orbits and the orbit had the same character as that of the Kosice meteorite (H5 ordinary chondrite), which fell on February 28, 2010 (Borovicka et al., 2013).

Mason Gully, the second meteorite recovered using the Desert Fireball Network (DFN), is characterized using petrography, mineralogy, oxygen isotopes, bulk chemistry, and physical properties. Geochemical data are consistent with its classification as an H5 ordinary chondrite. Several properties distinguish it from most other H chondrites. Its 10.7% porosity is predominantly macroscopic, present as intergranular void spaces rather than microscopic cracks. Modal mineralogy (determined via PS-XRD, element mapping via energy dispersive spectroscopy [EDS], and X-ray tomography [for sulfide, metal, and porosity volume fractions]) consistently gives an unusually low olivine/orthopyroxene ratio (0.67−0.76 for Mason Gully versus ~1.3 for typical H5 ordinary chondrites). Widespread “silicate darkening” is observed. In addition, it contains a bright green crystalline object at the surface of the recovered stone (diameter ≈ 1.5 mm), which has a tridymite core with minor α-quartz and a rim of both low- and high-Ca pyroxene. The mineralogy allows the calculation of the temperatures and ƒ(O2) characterizing thermal metamorphism on the parent body using both the two-pyroxene and the olivine-chromite geo-oxybarometers. These indicate that MG experienced a peak metamorphic temperature of ~900 °C and had a similar ƒ(O2) to Kernouve (H6) that was buffered by the reaction between olivine, metal, and pyroxene. There is no evidence for shock, consistent with the observed porosity structure. Thus, while Mason Gully has some unique properties, its geochemistry indicates a similar thermal evolution to other H chondrites. The presence of tridymite, while rare, is seen in other OCs and likely exogenous; however, the green object itself may result from metamorphism.

We present direct video observations of fragmentation in the first half of the atmospheric trajectory of several fireballs recorded with the Czech part of the European Fireball Network. The fragmentation takes place in the form of wakes. In this work we describe heights, velocities, and sizes of meteoroids, deduced from our Digital Autonomous Fireball Observatories, where these wakes form and disappear, and lengths of wakes from our video records. We compare derived fireball parameters with values derived on the basis of light curve modeling. The aim of the work is to determine the type of fragmentation and propose its possible source. The observed dynamic pressures at these fragmentation points are of the order of 0.01 ​MPa. Observed flow regimes indicate that the creation of wakes may be triggered by the meteor shock wave. Quasi-continuous fragmentation was determined as the responsible type of fragmentation in the first half of the atmospheric trajectory by our model.

We collected meteors with iron spectra observed by the newly developed Spectral Digital Autonomous Fireball Observatories (SDAFO). SDAFOs are run within the European Fireball Network and extend the spectral observation of this network. Iron meteoroids can be distinguished using their spectra by the absence of lines of Na, Mg, Cr, Ca, and other usually bright lines of meteoritic origin. Among 220 fireball spectra that were observed by SDAFOs in 2015–2019 and that showed at least three spectral lines, eight were meteors with iron spectra. We added to the collection one additional iron meteor, which was observed with Digital Autonomous Observatories (DAFO: non–spectral cameras), the iron spectrum of which was observed with the spectral cameras of the AMOS Network (Matlovic et al., 2019). We present atmospheric trajectories, light curves, and heliocentric orbits of these iron fireballs. The orbits are asteroidal, or Sun approaching, and show diversity similar to those of mm–sized iron meteoroids. The inclinations vary from nearly zero up to ≈ 70 ∘ . The maximum brightness of all fireballs was between magnitude −6 and −10, corresponding to meteoroid diameters about 1–4 ​cm. Seven fireballs were classified as type IIIA, and two fireballs were classified as type IIIB in the classification of Ceplecha and McCrosky (1976), pointing, at least formally, to fragile bodies comparable in strength to cometary meteoroids. The newly developed model of ablation of small iron meteoroids (Capek et al., 2019) is based on the spraying of liquid iron from the meteoroid surface. The model was able to derive unambiguous physical properties only for some of the studied cm-sized bodies. Another model, the semi–empirical model of meteoroid fragmentation, was used to fit the light curves. The erosion included in the model was able to fit the light curves by manually adjusting erosion parameters. To describe the sudden drop at the end of the light curve, it was necessary to progressively increase the erosion coefficient and decrease fragment masses along the trajectory.

An outburst of Draconid meteor shower was predicted for October 8 to 9, 2018. Using a variety of video and photographic cameras covering a broad range of magnitudes, the shower activity profile was measured. The main peak was observed at the solar longitude λ o = 195.359 ∘ ± 0.003 ∘ , what is equivalent to 23 h 07 . 5 m ± 5 m UT. This result is in good agreement with other reports as well as with the predictions. Two other sub-peaks or enhancements of the activity were detected later in the night. The maximum flux of meteoroids reached value of Φ 6.5 = 0.033 ± 0.007 meteoroids km−2 h−1 [MV> +6.5]. This is equivalent to ZHR ​= ​140 ± 30 which is higher than the majority of the models predicted. The analysis of the mass distribution index evolution and the comparison with other experiments suggests that the later activity was probably caused by the mixture of the different trails of the stream which were more dispersed. The flux of the meteoroids was three to four times smaller in comparison with the 2011 Draconid outburst. When comparing the radiants and velocities of the observed meteors with the model data, good agreement was found for the right ascension and velocity but a small offset of about +0.5∘ was observed in declination. On the other hand, the mean main peak radiant fits well the model of Maslov (2011) .

The origin of the Taurid complex is still debated. In addition to comet 2P/Encke, various asteroids were proposed to be members of the complex and thus possible parent bodies of Taurid meteoroids. Studies of physical properties of Taurid meteoroids can provide constrains on their source. We used a well defined orbital sample of 16 Taurid fireballs with detailed radiometric light curves. The sample represented meteoroids of initial masses from 8 grams to 650 kg (diameters 1 - 70 cm). The semi-empirical fragmentation model was used to study their atmospheric fragmentation and derive strength distribution within the meteoroids. It was found that small meteoroids are stronger than large ones. When considering Taurid material as a whole, the majority has a very low strength of less than 0.01 MPa and a density less than 1000 kg/m3. The low strength material exists mostly as large bodies (>10 cm). If encountered in smaller bodies, it forms only a minor part. Stronger materials up to 0.3 MPa exist in Taurids as well, but the stronger material the rarer it is. Strong material forms small inclusions in large bodies or exists as small (cm-sized) separate bodies. On July 10, 2018 at 21:29 UT extended areas of South-Western Germany were illuminated by a very bright bolide. This fireball was recorded by instruments of the European Fireball Network (EN). The records enabled complex and precise description of this event including the prediction of the impact area. So far six meteorites totaling about 1.23 kg have been found in the predicted location for a given mass during dedicated searches. The first piece of about 12 g was recovered on July 24 close to the village of Renchen (Baden-Wurttemberg) followed by the largest fragment of 955 g on July 31 about five km north-west of Renchen. Renchen is a moderately-shocked (S4) breccia consisting of abundant highly recrystallized rock fragments as well as impact melt rock clasts. The texture, the large grain size of plagioclase, and the homogeneous compositions of olivine (similar to Fa(26)) and pyroxene (similar to Fs(22)) clearly indicate that Renchen is composed of metamorphosed rock fragments (L5-6). An L-group (and ordinary chondrite) heritage is consistent with the data on the model abundance of metal, the density, the magnetic susceptibility as well as on O-, Ti-, and Cr-isotope characteristics. Renchen does not contain solar wind implanted noble gases and is a fragmental breccia. An unusually large mm-sized merrillite-apatite aggregate shows trace element characteristics like other phosphates from ordinary chondrites. Data on the bulk chemistry, IR-spectroscopy, cosmogenic nuclides, and organic components also indicate similarities to other metamorphosed L chondrites. Noble gas studies reveal that the meteorite has a cosmic ray exposure (CRE) age of 42 Ma and that most of the cosmogenic gases were produced in a meteoroid with a radius of at max. 20 cm based on the radionuclide Al-26 and 10-150 cm based on cosmogenic Ne-22/Ne-21. K-Ar and U/Th-He gas retention ages are both in the range similar to 3.0-3.2 Ga. Both systems do not show evidence for a complete reset 470 Ma ago, and may instead have recorded the same resetting event 3.0 Ga ago.

We provide the circumstances and details of the fireball observation, search expeditions, recovery, strewn field, and physical characteristics of the Kosice meteorite that fell in Slovakia on February 28, 2010. The meteorite was only the 15th case of an observed bolide with a recovered mass and subsequent orbit determination. Despite multiple eyewitness reports of the bolide, only three videos from security cameras in Hungary were used for the strewn field determination and orbit computation. Multiple expeditions of professionals and individual searchers found 218 fragments with total weight of 11.3 kg. The strewn field with the size of 593 km is characterized with respect to the space distribution of the fragments, their mass and size-frequency distribution. This work describes a catalog of 78 fragments, mass, size, volume, fusion crust, names of discoverers, geographic location, and time of discovery, which represents the most complex study of a fresh meteorite fall. From the analytical results, we classified the Kosice meteorite as an ordinary H5 chondrite.

Bunburra Rockhole is a unique basaltic achondrite that has many mineralogical and petrographic characteristics in common with the noncumulate eucrites, but differs in its oxygen isotope composition. Here, we report a study of the mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, and chronology of Bunburra Rockhole to better understand the petrogenesis of this meteorite and compare it to the eucrites. The geochemistry of bulk samples and of pyroxene, plagioclase, and Ca-phosphate in Bunburra Rockhole is similar to that of typical noncumulate eucrites. Chronological data for Bunburra Rockhole indicate early formation, followed by slow cooling and perhaps multiple subsequent heating events, which is also similar to some noncumulate eucrites. The 26 Al- 26 Mg extinct radionuclide chronometer was reset in Bunburra Rockhole after the complete decay of 26 Al, but a slight excess in the radiogenic 26 Mg in a bulk sample allows the determination of a model 26 Al- 26 Mg age that suggests formation of the parent melt for this meteorite from its source magma within the first ~3 Ma of the beginning of the solar system. The 207 Pb- 206 Pb absolute chronometer is also disturbed in Bunburra Rockhole minerals, but a whole-rock isochron provides a re-equilibration age of ~4.1 Ga, most likely caused by impact heating. The mineralogy, geochemistry, and chronology of Bunburra Rockhole demonstrate the similarities of this achondrite to the eucrites, and suggest that it formed from a parent melt with a composition similar to that for noncumulate eucrites and subsequently experienced a thermal history and evolution comparable to that of eucritic basalts. This implies the formation of multiple differentiated parent bodies in the early solar system that had nearly identical bulk elemental compositions and petrogenetic histories, but different oxygen isotope compositions inherited from the solar nebula.

On March 6, 2016 at 21:36:51 UT, extended areas of Upper Austria, Bavaria (Germany) and the southwestern part of the Czech Republic were illuminated by a very bright bolide. This bolide was recorded by instruments in the Czech part of the European Fireball Network and it enabled complex and precise description of this event including prediction of the impact area. So far six meteorites totaling 1473 g have been found in the predicted area. The first pieces were recovered on March 12, 2016 on a field close to the village of Stubenberg (Bavaria). Stubenberg is a weakly shocked (S3) fragmental breccia consisting of abundant highly recrystallized rock fragments embedded in a clastic matrix. The texture, the large grain size of plagioclase, and the homogeneous compositions of olivine (Fa31.4) and pyroxene (Fs25.4) clearly indicate that Stubenberg is an LL6 chondrite breccia. This is consistent with the data on O, Ti, and Cr isotopes. Stubenberg does not contain solar wind-implanted noble gases. Data on the bulk chemistry, IR spectroscopy, cosmogenic nuclides, and organic components also indicate similarities to other metamorphosed LL chondrites. Noble gas studies reveal that the meteorite has a cosmic ray exposure (CRE) age of 36 ± 3 Ma and that most of the cosmogenic gases were produced in a meteoroid with a radius of at least 35 cm. Taurid meteor shower produces prolonged but usually low activity every October and November. In some years, however, the activity is significantly enhanced. Previous studies based on long-term activity statistics concluded that the enhancement is caused by a swarm of meteoroids locked in 7:2 resonance with Jupiter. Here we present precise data on 144 Taurid fireballs observed by new digital cameras of the European Fireball Network in the enhanced activity year 2015. Orbits of 113 fireballs show common characteristics and form together a well defined orbital structure, which we call new branch. We found that this branch is characterized by longitudes of perihelia lying between 155.9-160o and latitudes of perihelia between 4.2-5.7o. Semimajor axes are between 2.23-2.28 AU and indeed overlap with the 7:2 resonance. Eccentricities are in wide range 0.80-0.90. The orbits form a concentric ring in the inner solar system. The masses of the observed meteoroids were in a wide range from 0.1 g to more than 1000 kg. We found that all meteoroids larger than 300 g were very fragile, while those smaller than 30 g were much more compact. Based on orbital characteristics, we argue that asteroids 2015 TX24 and 2005 UR, both of diameters 200-300 meters, are direct members of the new branch. It is therefore very likely that the new branch contains also numerous still not discovered objects of decameter or even larger size. Since asteroids of sizes of tens to hundreds meters pose a treat to the ground even if they are intrinsically weak, impact hazard increases significantly when the Earth encounters the Taurid new branch every few years. Further studies leading to better description of this real source of potentially hazardous objects, which can be large enough to cause significant regional or even continental damage on the Earth, are therefore extremely important., 24 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables. Context. A bright fireball was observed above the Czech Republic on September 9, 2016, at 23:06:59 UT. Moreover, the video cameras at two different stations recorded eight fainter meteors flying on parallel atmospheric trajectories within less than 2 s. All the meteors belong to the September epsilon Perseid meteor shower. The measured proximity of all meteors during a very low activity meteor shower suggests that a cluster of meteors was observed.Aims. The goal of the paper is first to determine whether this event was a random occurrence or a real meteor cluster and second, if it was a cluster, to determine the epoch and at what distance from the Earth the separation of the particles occurred.Methods. The atmospheric trajectories of the observed meteors, masses, and relative distances of individual particles were determined using a double-station observation. According to the distances and masses of the particles, the most probable distance and time of fragmentation is determined.Results. The observed group of meteors is interpreted as the result of the orbital fragmentation of a bigger meteoroid. The fragmentation happened no earlier than 2 or 3 days before the encounter with the Earth at a distance smaller than ~0.08 AU from the Earth.

Superbolides, i.e. extremely bright meteors produced by entries of meter-sized bodies into terrestrial atmosphere, are rare events. We present here detailed analysis of a superbolide, which occurred over Romania on January 7, 2015. The trajectory, velocity, and orbit were determined using two all-sky photographs from a station of the European Fireball Network (EN) in Slovakia and five casual video records from Romania, which were carefully calibrated. Bolide light curve was measured by EN radiometers. We found that the entry speed was 27.76 $\pm$ 0.19 km/s, significantly lower than reported by US Government sensors. The orbit was asteroidal with low inclination and aphelion inside Jupiter's orbit. The atmospheric behavior was, however, not typical for an asteroidal body. The peak brightness of absolute magnitude of -21 was reached at a quite large height of 42.8 km and the brightness then decreased quickly. The bolide almost disappeared at a height of 38.7 km, leaving just a stationary luminous trail visible for several seconds. Only one small fragment continued until the height of 36 km. Brief meteorite searches were unsuccessful. The modeling of the light curve revealed that the body of initial mass of about 4500 kg remained almost intact until the dynamic pressure reached 0.9 MPa but it was then quickly disintegrated into many tiny fragments and dust under 1-3 MPa. A comparison was made with three other superbolides for which we have radiometric light curves: ordinary chondrite fall Ko\v{s}ice, carbonaceous chondrite fall Maribo, and cometary Taurid bolide of October 31, 2015. The Romanian superbolide was not similar to any of these and represents probably a new type of material with intrinsic strength of about 1 MPa., Comment: accepted in Planetary and Space Science

Concurrent sound associated with very bright meteors manifests as popping, hissing, and faint rustling sounds occurring simultaneously with the arrival of light from meteors. Numerous instances have been documented with −11 to −13 brightness. These sounds cannot be attributed to direct acoustic propagation from the upper atmosphere for which travel time would be several minutes. Concurrent sounds must be associated with some form of electromagnetic energy generated by the meteor, propagated to the vicinity of the observer, and transduced into acoustic waves. Previously, energy propagated from meteors was assumed to be RF emissions. This has not been well validated experimentally. Herein we describe experimental results and numerical models in support of photoacoustic coupling as the mechanism. Recent photometric measurements of fireballs reveal strong millisecond flares and significant brightness oscillations at frequencies ≥40 Hz. Strongly modulated light at these frequencies with sufficient intensity can create concurrent sounds through radiative heating of common dielectric materials like hair, clothing, and leaves. This heating produces small pressure oscillations in the air contacting the absorbers. Calculations show that −12 brightness meteors can generate audible sound at ~25 dB SPL. The photoacoustic hypothesis provides an alternative explanation for this longstanding mystery about generation of concurrent sounds by fireballs.

We present 25 photographic fireballs belonging to the September epsilon Perseid (SPE, IAU #208) meteor shower observed by the Czech part of the European Fireball Network in 2013–2017. Exceptional high activity of bright photographic fireballs was observed in 2013, while a lower activity, but still higher than in other years, was observed in the period of 2015–2017. Physical properties of these SPE fireballs were studied and compared to other meteor showers. Perseids are found to be the closest analog to SPE. Corrected geocentric radiant of the 2013 outburst fireballs was determined for solar longitude 167.20° and has right ascension 47.67 ± 0.04° and declination 39.493 ± 0.013° (J2000.0). On the basis of determined heliocentric orbits the parent body of the shower is an unknown long-period comet on retrograde orbit with an orbital period of the order of a thousand years.

Context.A significant fraction of small meteors are produced by iron meteoroids. Their origin and the interaction with the atmosphere have not been well explained up to now.Aims.The goals of the study are to observe faint, slow, low altitude meteors, to identify candidates for iron meteoroids among them, to model their ablation and light curves, and to determine their properties.Methods.Double station video observations were used for the determination of atmospheric trajectories, heliocentric orbits, light curves, and spectra of meteors. Meteors with iron spectra or of suspected iron composition based on beginning heights and light curves were modeled. The immediate removal of liquid iron from the surface as a cloud of droplets with Nukiyama–Tanasawa size distribution and their subsequent vaporization was assumed as the main ablation process on the basis of our previous work. The numerical model has only five parameters: meteoroid initial velocityv∞, zenith distancez, initial massm∞, mean drop sizeDdr, and luminous efficiencyτ. The theoretical light curves were compared with the observed ones.Results.The model is able to explain the majority of the selected light curves, and meteoroid parameters that are not directly observable –m∞,Ddr, andτ– are determined. Unlike in most meteor studies, the mass and luminous efficiency are determined independently. Luminous efficiency ranges from 0.08 to 5.8%; it weakly decreases with increasing initial meteoroid mass. No simple dependency on initial velocity was found. The mean size of iron drops depends on the meteoroid velocity. Slower meteoroids can produce drops with a wide range of mean sizes, whereas faster ones are better matched with larger drops with a smaller dispersion of sizes.

Aims. The complex study of millimetre-sized meteoroids can reveal more about the structure and origin of population of these meteoroids. Methods. Double-station video observations, paired with spectroscopic video observations, were used to study small meteoroids. In total 152 sporadic and shower meteors of maximum brightness between magnitude −5 and +3 were analysed. Spectral classification was based on time-integrated intensities of lines of Na, Mg, and Fe. Meteor light curves and deceleration were fitted by the grain erosion model. Heliocentric orbits of all meteors were computed. Monochromatic light curves were constructed in order to study differential ablation. The length of meteor wakes was evaluated as well. Results. The variety of properties among millimetre-sized meteoroids proved different sources and histories of this material. Meteoroids that contain small grains tend to release their sodium early. For given grain sizes, the sodium in Na-poor meteoroids is released earlier than in meteors without sodium depletion. Overall, meteoroids with sodium depletion are revealed to have different structures: they have stronger material without very small grains and they do not show very bright wakes. Two iron meteoroids on Halley-type orbits were observed, thereby supporting the idea of large-scale mixing of material in the early solar system. The distribution of grain sizes of Jupiter-family members was in good agreement with results from the COSIMA instrument on the ROSETTA probe.

The seismic network can be used for the localization of the fireball trajectory in the atmosphere. The types of sonic or blasting waves, created during the meteorid’s penetration of the atmosphere, are discussed. The practical use of the localization based on cylindrical or spherical waves is shown on the examples of fireballs Moravka (2000), Břeclav (2007), Jesenice (2009) and Kosice (2010).

The damage caused by the asteroid 17–20 metres in diameter that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, on 15 February 2013 is estimated here to have an energy equivalent to about 500 kilotons of TNT. The fireball that streaked across the skies above Chelyabinsk in Russia on 15 February 2013 is providing astronomers with a wealth of information. Two papers in this issue present detailed reconstructions of the Chelyabinsk event. From an analysis of videos, Jiři Borovicka et al. determined the trajectory and velocity of the superbolide with high precision. Its orbit was similar to that of the 2-kilometre-diameter asteroid 86039 (1999 NC43), suggesting that the two bodies may be part of the same asteroid family. And they show that it broke into small pieces between the altitudes of 45 and 30 kilometres. In the companion paper, Peter Brown et al. analysed the damage caused by the airburst which they estimate was equivalent in energy to the detonation of 400 to 600 kilotons of TNT. They suggest that the number of impactors with diameters of tens of metres was an order of magnitude higher than current estimates, shifting much of the residual impact risk to these sizes. Most large (over a kilometre in diameter) near-Earth asteroids are now known, but recognition that airbursts (or fireballs resulting from nuclear-weapon-sized detonations of meteoroids in the atmosphere) have the potential to do greater damage1 than previously thought has shifted an increasing portion of the residual impact risk (the risk of impact from an unknown object) to smaller objects2. Above the threshold size of impactor at which the atmosphere absorbs sufficient energy to prevent a ground impact, most of the damage is thought to be caused by the airburst shock wave3, but owing to lack of observations this is uncertain4,5. Here we report an analysis of the damage from the airburst of an asteroid about 19 metres (17 to 20 metres) in diameter southeast of Chelyabinsk, Russia, on 15 February 2013, estimated to have an energy equivalent of approximately 500 (±100) kilotons of trinitrotoluene (TNT, where 1 kiloton of TNT = 4.185×1012 joules). We show that a widely referenced technique4,5,6 of estimating airburst damage does not reproduce the observations, and that the mathematical relations7 based on the effects of nuclear weapons—almost always used with this technique—overestimate blast damage. This suggests that earlier damage estimates5,6 near the threshold impactor size are too high. We performed a global survey of airbursts of a kiloton or more (including Chelyabinsk), and find that the number of impactors with diameters of tens of metres may be an order of magnitude higher than estimates based on other techniques8,9. This suggests a non-equilibrium (if the population were in a long-term collisional steady state the size-frequency distribution would either follow a single power law or there must be a size-dependent bias in other surveys) in the near-Earth asteroid population for objects 10 to 50 metres in diameter, and shifts more of the residual impact risk to these sizes.

The Kosice meteorite fall occurred in eastern Slovakia on February 28, 2010, 22:25 UT. The very bright bolide was imaged by three security video cameras from Hungary. Detailed bolide light curves were obtained through clouds by radiometers on seven cameras of the European Fireball Network. Records of sonic waves were found on six seismic and four infrasonic stations. An atmospheric dust cloud was observed the next morning before sunrise. After careful calibration, the video records were used to compute the bolide trajectory and velocity. The meteoroid, of estimated mass of 3500 kg, entered the atmosphere with a velocity of 15 km s−1 on a trajectory with a slope of 60° to the horizontal. The largest fragment ceased to be visible at a height of 17 km, where it was decelerated to 4.5 km s−1. A maximum brightness of absolute stellar magnitude about −18 was reached at a height of 36 km. We developed a detailed model of meteoroid atmospheric fragmentation to fit the observed light curve and deceleration. We found that Kosice was a weak meteoroid, which started to fragment under the dynamic pressure of only 0.1 MPa and fragmented heavily under 1 MPa. In total, 78 meteorites were recovered in the predicted fall area during official searches. Other meteorites were found by private collectors. Known meteorite masses ranged from 0.56 g to 2.37 kg. The meteorites were classified as ordinary chondrites of type H5 and shock stage S3. The heliocentric orbit had a relatively large semimajor axis of 2.7 AU and aphelion distance of 4.5 ± 0.5 AU. Backward numerical integration of the preimpact orbit indicates possible large variations of the orbital elements in the past due to resonances with Jupiter.

Concentrations and isotopic compositions of krypton have been measured in Eucrite falls using a new resonance ionization mass-spectrometer (RIMSKI). The high sensitivity of the apparatus allowed sample sizes to be reduced to 1–4 mg for 81 Kr–Kr cosmic ray exposure age determination. 81 Kr CRE ages have been determined for: Bereba, Bouvante, Ibitira, Juvinas, Millbillillie, Padvarninkai, Pasamonte and Stannern with precision comparable to those reported by other groups for analyses of >100 times larger samples. The 81 Kr–Kr CRE ages of Lakangaon (25.3 ± 1.1 My) and Bunburra Rockhole (27.6 ± 1.4 My) have been determined for the first time. The 81 Kr CRE ages of 16 out of 17 ordinary Eucrite falls can be grouped into clusters at 10.6 ± 0.4 Ma, 14.4 ± 0.6 My, 21.7 ± 0.4 My, 25.4 ± 0.4 My, 37.8 ± 0.6 My using an analysis based on the Akaike information criterion, which is well suited to addressing such issues. This shows that most of the meteorites originate from five collision events over the last ∼50 My, which is hard to reconcile with models requiring multiple fragmentation events between Vesta and Earth.

Through an international collaboration between Imperial College London, the Ondřejov Observatory in the Czech Republic and the Western Australian Museum, the installation of the Australian Desert Fireball Network in the Nullarbor Region of Western Australia was completed in 2007. Currently, the Network, which is the first to be established in the southern hemisphere, comprises four all-sky autonomous observatories providing precise triangulation of fireball records to constrain pre-atmospheric orbits and fall positions of meteorites over an area of approximately 200 000 km2. To date, the Network has led to the successful recovery of two observed meteorite falls. The first recovery was three fragments (174, 150 and 14.9 g) of the same meteorite fall recorded on 20 July 2007 at 19 h 13 m 53.2 s±0.1 s UT that were found within 100 m of the predicted fall line. Named Bunburra Rockhole, the meteorite is a basaltic achondrite with an oxygen isotopic composition (Δ17O = −0.112 ‰) distinguishing it from basaltic ...

– We report an analysis of the first instrumentally observed meteorite fall in Australia, which was recorded photographically and photoelectrically by two eastern stations of the Desert Fireball Network (DFN) on July 20, 2007. The meteoroid with an initial mass of 22 kg entered the atmosphere with a low speed of 13.36 km s−1 and began a luminous trajectory at an altitude of 62.83 km. In maximum, it reached −9.6 absolute magnitude and terminated after a 5.7 s and 64.7 km long flight at an altitude of 29.59 km with a speed of 5.8 km s−1. The angle of the atmospheric trajectory to the Earth’s surface was 30.9°. The first organized search took place in October 2008 and the first meteorite (150 g) was found 97 m southward from the predicted central line at the end of the first day of searching (October 3, 2008). The second stone (174 g) was recovered 39 m northward from the central line, both exactly in the predicted mass limits. During the second expedition in February 2009, a third fragment of 14.9 g was found again very close (∼100 m) from the predicted position. Total recovered mass is 339 g. The meteorite was designated Bunburra Rockhole (BR) after a nearby landscape structure. This first DFN sample is an igneous achondrite. Initial petrography indicated that BR was a brecciated eucrite but detailed analyses proved that BR is not a typical eucrite, but an anomalous basaltic meteorite (Bland et al. 2009). BR was delivered from an unusual, Aten type orbit (a

– Bunburra Rockhole is the first meteorite fall photographed and recovered by the Desert Fireball Network in Australia. It is classified as an ungrouped achondrite similar in mineralogical and chemical composition to eucrites, but it has a distinct oxygen isotope composition. The question is if achondrites like Bunburra Rockhole originate from the same parent body as the howardite-eucrite-diogenite (HED) meteorites or from several separate, differentiated parent bodies. To address this question, we measured cosmogenic radionuclides and noble gases in the Bunburra Rockhole achondrite. The short-lived radionuclides 22Na and 54Mn confirm that Bunburra Rockhole is a recent fall. The concentrations of 10Be, 26Al and 36Cl as well as the 22Ne/21Ne ratio indicate that Bunburra Rockhole was a relatively small object (R approximately 15 cm) in space, consistent with the photographic fireball observations. The cosmogenic 38Ar concentration yields a cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) age of 22 ± 3 Myr, whereas 21Ne and 3He yield approximately 30% and approximately 60% lower ages, respectively, due to loss of cosmogenic He and Ne, mainly from plagioclase. With a CRE age of 22 Myr, Bunburra Rockhole is the first anomalous eucrite that overlaps with the main CRE peak of the HED meteorites. The radiogenic K-Ar age of 4.1 Gyr is consistent with the U-Pb age, while the young U,Th-He age of approximately 1.4 Gyr indicates that Bunburra Rockhole lost radiogenic 4He more recently.

We have assembled data on thirteen cases of meteorite falls with accurate tracking data on atmospheric passage. In all cases we estimate the bulk strength of the object corresponding to its earliest observed or inferred fragmentation in the high atmosphere, and can compare these values with measured strengths of meteorites in the taxonomic class for that fall. In all thirteen cases the strength corresponding to earliest observed or inferred fragmentation is much less than the compressive or tensile strength reported for that class of stony meteorites. We find a more random relation between bulk sample strength and sample mass than is suggested by a commonly used empirical power law. We estimate bulk strengths on entry being characteristically of the order of 10 -1 to 10 -2 times the tensile strengths of recovered samples.

Earth is continuously colliding with fragments of asteroids and comets of various sizes. The largest encounter in historical times occurred over the Tunguska river in Siberia in 1908, producing1,2 an airburst of energy equivalent to 5–15 megatons of trinitrotoluene (1 kiloton of trinitrotoluene represents an energy of 4.185 × 1012 joules). Until recently, the next most energetic airburst events occurred over Indonesia3 in 2009 and near the Marshall Islands4 in 1994, both with energies of several tens of kilotons. Here we report an analysis of selected video records of the Chelyabinsk superbolide5 of 15 February 2013, with energy equivalent to 500 kilotons of trinitrotoluene, and details of its atmospheric passage. We found that its orbit was similar to the orbit of the two-kilometre-diameter asteroid 86039 (1999 NC43), to a degree of statistical significance sufficient to suggest that the two were once part of the same object. The bulk strength—the ability to resist breakage—of the Chelyabinsk asteroid, of about one megapascal, was similar to that of smaller meteoroids6 and corresponds to a heavily fractured single stone. The asteroid broke into small pieces between the altitudes of 45 and 30 kilometres, preventing more-serious damage on the ground. The total mass of surviving fragments larger than 100 grams was lower than expected7.

In 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2006 favourable returns of Leonids occurred and were observable, at least partly, from Central Europe. We present results on 54 photographically recorded multi-station Leonid fireballs and their probable identification from five individual dust trails or the Leonid Filament. Atmospheric behaviour was studied on the basis of beginning and terminal heights, dynamic pressures, PE coefficients, and light curves. The apparent non-dependence of beginning heights on initial photometric mass suggests the existence of a height hlim = 111 ± 5 km, which is the height where all Leonids reach an absolute magnitude of about −2 m .T hree different shapes of the light curves were recognized and a recently implemented photometric method was used for the determination of the brightness of the Leonids. The precise heliocentric orbits and geocentric radiants for 34 Leonids with known times of meteor passage are also presented.

Asteroids 3200 Phaethon and 196256 (2003 EH1) are connected with two major meteoroid streams, Geminids and Quadrantids, respectively. We have modeled the observed light curves and decelerations of Geminid and Quadrantid meteors and studied their spectra. In both cases, we have found typical bulk densities of about 2600 kg m−3, much larger than in cometary meteoroids. Sodium was partially lost from Geminids and Quadrantids due to solar heating. The Quadrantid material was therefore not hidden deep inside the parent body 1500 years ago, when the perihelion was low enough for sodium loss to occur.

Commission 22 is part of Division III on Planetary System Sciences of the International Astronomical Union. Members of Commission 22 are professional scientists studying bodies in the Solar System smaller than asteroids and comets, and their interactions with planets. The main subjects of interest are meteors, meteoroids, meteoroid streams, interplanetary dust particles, and also zodiacal cloud, meteor trains, meteorites, tektites, etc.

After 3 years of systematic monitoring of fireballs by autonomous fireball observatories (AFO), millisecond flares (spikes) were recognized for the frequent and regular behavior of meteor light curves recorded with high time resolution. Also, other peculiarities in meteor motion, radiation, and ionization point to some more powerful internal processes in meteoroid interaction with the atmosphere than hypersonic aerodynamics can offer. Fragmentation of meteoroids starts at much higher altitudes than at those corresponding to aerodynamic loading. The fragility of meteoroids cannot explain this behavior, beeing also observed with the strongest bolide types (I and II). We propose triboelectricity as induced in meteoroids during their atmospheric penetration as the main process to adequately explain the meteor phenomenon, with hypersonic aerodynamics processes being only of secondary importance. Triboelectric charging may be the most important energy transfer inside a meteoroid causing internal charge differences inside different conductivity domains until discharge fragments the body. Such a process then may repeat over and over in the main body, as well as in individual fragments.

The formation of a 13-m wide impact crater by a stony meteorite near Carancas, Peru, on September 15, 2007 was an unexpected event. Stony meteoroids usually disintegrate in the atmosphere in many pieces, each landing at low velocity. We present examples of well-observed fireballs, which have all experienced atmospheric fragmentation. Using a simple model, we find that the Carancas meteoroid may have avoided fragmentation, if its strength was 20-40 MPa; such a strength would be comparable to the tensile strength of stony meteorites, but is higher than the strength of other observed meteoroids. We conclude that Carancas was a rare example of a monolithic meteoroid that was free of internal cracks. This example demonstrates that meteoroid strength can vary significantly from case to case and does not depend on meteoroid size. We estimate that the initial size of Carancas meteoroid was 0.9-1.7 m. Our model predicts an impact velocity that was in the range 2-4 km s -1 .

We report exceptional fireball activity of the Orionid meteor shower in 2006. During four nights in October 2006 the autonomous fireball observatories of the Czech part of the European Fireball Network (EN) recorded 48 fireballs belonging to the Orionids. This is significantly more than the total number of Orionids recorded during about five decades long continuous operation of the EN. Based on precise multi-station photographic and radiometric data we present accurate atmospheric trajectories, heliocentric orbits, light curves and basic physical properties of 10 Orionid fireballs with atmospheric trajectories that were long enough and, with one exception, were observed from at least three stations. Seven were recorded in within a 2-h interval in the night of 20/21 October. Their basic parameters such as radiant positions and heliocentric orbits are very similar. This high fireball activity originated from a very compact geocentric radiant defined by α = 95.10° ± 0.10° and δ = 15.50° ± 0.06°. These fireballs most likely belonged to a distinct filament of larger meteoroids trapped in 1:5 resonance with Jupiter. From detailed light curves and basic fireball classification we found that these meteoroids appertain to the weakest component of interplanetary matter.

We present an analysis of sporadic meteor number 07406018, observed by image intensified video cameras at two stations, which showed a pronounced deceleration along its trajectory. We have applied the erosion model to analyze simultaneously the deceleration and light curve. We have found that the meteoroid had a low density of about 500 kg m−3, consistent with its cometary orbit. The meteoroid structure was, nevertheless, markedly different from the Draconid meteoroids, studied recently with the same model. The size of the constituent grains was larger and the erosion energy was higher than in Draconids. The meteor spectrum was also different from Draconid spectra and showed very bright Na lines. The meteoroid composition was probably different from normal cometary composition.

Aims. The observation of Draconid meteors was used to infer information on the structure, porosity, strength, and composition of the dust of comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. Methods. Stereoscopic video and photographic observations of six faint and one bright Draconid meteors provided meteor morphologies, heights, light curves, and atmospheric decelerations. The spectrum of the bright meteor was also obtained. We developed a simple model of meteoroid ablation and fragmentation. The model assumes that cometary meteoroids are composed of constituent grains. Results. By fitting the observed decelerations and light curves, we have found that the grain mass range was relatively narrow in all meteoroids but differed from case to case. Some meteoroids were coarse grained with grain masses 10 −9 to 10 −10 kg, others were fine grained with grain masses one order of magnitude lower. Individual mm-sized meteoroids contained tens of thousands to almost a million grains (assuming grain density close to 3000 kg m −3 ). The meteoroids were porous aggregates of grains, having porosities of about 90% and bulk densities of 300 kg m −3 . Grain separation started after the surface of the meteoroid received energy of 10 6 Jm −2 . The separation continued during the first half of meteor trajectories. We call this phase erosion. The energy needed for grain erosion was 15−30× lower than the energy of vaporization. However, 30% of the largest meteoroid was resistant to thermal erosion; this part disrupted later mechanically under a very low dynamic pressure of 5 kPa. The relative abundances of Na, Mg, and Fe were nearly chondritic, but differential ablation caused preferential loss of sodium at the beginning of the trajectory.

The Quadrantid meteor shower is among the strongest annual meteor showers, and has drawn the attention of scientists for several decades. The stream is unusual, among others, for several reasons: its very short duration around maximum activity (≈12–14 h) as detected by visual, photographic and radar observations, its recent onset (around 1835 AD Quetelet, L.A.J. Ever since, there have been debates as to the age of the stream and the nature of its proposed parent body, asteroid 2003 EH 1 . In this work, we present results on the most probable age and formation mechanism of the narrow portion of the Quadrantid meteoroid stream. For the first time we use data on eight high precision photographic Quadrantids, equivalent to gram–kilogram size, to constrain the most likely age of the core of the stream. Out of eight high-precision photographic Quadrantids, five pertain directly to the narrow portion of the stream. In addition, we also use data on five high-precision radar Quadrantids, observed within the peak of the shower. We performed backwards numerical integrations of the equations of motion of a large number of ‘clones’ of both, the eight high-precision photographic and five radar Quadrantid meteors, along with the proposed parent body, 2003 EH 1 . According to our results, from the backward integrations, the most likely age of the narrow structure of the Quadrantids is between 200 and 300 years. These presumed ejection epochs, corresponding to 1700–1800 AD, are then used for forward integrations of large numbers of hypothetical meteoroids, ejected from the parent 2003 EH 1 , until the present epoch. The aim is to constrain whether the core of the Quadrantid meteoroid stream is consistent with a previously proposed relatively young age (≈200 years).

Small asteroids intersecting Earth's orbit can deliver extraterrestrial rocks to the Earth, called meteorites. This process is accompanied by a luminous phenomena in the atmosphere, called bolides or fireballs. Observations of bolides provide pre-atmospheric orbits of meteorites, physical and chemical properties of small asteroids, and the flux (i.e. frequency of impacts) of bodies at the Earth in the centimeter to decameter size range. In this chapter we explain the processes occurring during the penetration of cosmic bodies through the atmosphere and review the methods of bolide observations. We compile available data on the fireballs associated with 22 instrumentally observed meteorite falls. Among them are the heterogeneous falls Almahata Sitta (2008 TC$_3$) and Bene\v{s}ov, which revolutionized our view on the structure and composition of small asteroids, the P\v{r}\'{\i}bram-Neuschwanstein orbital pair, carbonaceous chondrite meteorites with orbits on the asteroid-comet boundary, and the Chelyabinsk fall, which produced a damaging blast wave. While most meteoroids disrupt into fragments during atmospheric flight, the Carancas meteoroid remained nearly intact and caused a crater-forming explosion on the ground.

The Križevci H6 meteorite was recovered on the basis of fireball data obtained by the cameras of the Croatian Meteor Network. The fireball, which occurred on February 4, 2011, 23:20:40 UT, was also observed by meteor cameras in Slovenia and by the Autonomous Fireball Observatory in Martinsberg, Austria, which belongs to the European Fireball Network. Here, we present detailed data on fireball trajectory, velocity, deceleration, light curve, and orbit. We also modeled the atmospheric fragmentation of the meteoroid on the basis of the light curve and deceleration. The initial mass of the meteoroid was between 25–100 kg, most probably about 50 kg. Severe fragmentation occurred at heights of approximately 60 and 31 km, under dynamic pressures of 0.1 and 3 MPa, respectively. The peak absolute magnitude of 13.7 was reached during the second severe fragmentation event. The recovered 291 g meteorite was probably the only fragment with a terminal mass exceeding 100 g. The orbit had a low inclination of 0.6 degrees, perihelion distance 0.74 AU, and semimajor axis 1.54 AU. Križevci can be ranked among the 10 best documented meteorite falls.
