Galaxy clusters are important cosmological probes that have helped to establish the $\mathrm{\Lambda}$CDM paradigm as the standard model of cosmology. However, recent tensions between different types of high-accuracy data highlight the need for novel probes of the cosmological parameters. Such a probe is the turnaround density: the mass density on the scale where galaxies around a cluster join the Hubble flow. To measure the turnaround density, one must locate the distance from the cluster center where turnaround occurs. Earlier work has shown that a turnaround radius can be readily identified in simulations by analyzing the 3D dark matter velocity field. However, measurements using realistic data face challenges due to projection effects. This study aims to assess the feasibility of measuring the turnaround radius using machine learning techniques applied to simulated observations of galaxy clusters. We employ N-body simulations across various cosmologies to generate galaxy cluster projections. Utilizing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), we assess the predictability of the turnaround radius based on galaxy line-of-sight velocity, number density, and mass profiles. We find a strong correlation between the turnaround radius and the central mass of a galaxy cluster, rendering the mass distribution outside the virial radius of little relevance to the model's predictive power. The velocity dispersion among galaxies also contributes valuable information concerning the turnaround radius. Importantly, the accuracy of a line-of-sight velocity model remains robust even when the data within $\mathrm{R_{200}}$ of the central overdensity are absent., Comment: Submitted to A&A, 12 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

The Wide Area Linear Optical Polarimeter North (WALOP-North) is an optical polarimeter designed for the needs of the PASIPHAE survey. It will be installed on the 1.3m telescope at the Skinakas Observatory in Crete, Greece. After commissioning, it will measure the polarization of millions of stars at high Galactic latitude, aiming to measure hundreds of stars per $deg^2$. The astronomical filter used in the instrument is a modified, polarimetrically-neutral broadband SDSS-r. This instrument will be pioneering one due to its large field-of-view (FoV) of $30\times 30$ $arcmin^2$ and high accuracy polarimetry measurements. The accuracy and sensitivity of the instrument in polarization fraction will be at the 0.1\% and 0.05\% level, respectively. Four separate 4k$\times$4k CCDs will be used as the instrument detectors, each imaging one of the $0\deg{}, 45\deg{}, 90\deg{}$ and $135\deg{}$ polarized FoV separately, therefore making the instrument a four-channel, one-shot polarimeter. Here, we present the overall optical design of the instrument, emphasizing on the aspects of the instrument that are different from WALOP-South. RoboPol is a four-channel, one-shot linear optical polarimeter that has been successfully operating since 2013 on the 1.3 m telescope at Skinakas Observatory in Crete, Greece. Using its unique optical system, it measures the linear Stokes parameters $q$ and $u$ in a single exposure with high polarimetric accuracy of 0.1% - 0.15% and 1 degree in polarization angle in the R broadband filter. Its performance marginally degrades in other broadband filters. The source of the current instrumental performance limit has been identified as unaccounted and variable instrumental polarization, most likely originating from factors such as temperature and gravity-induced instrument flexure. To improve the performance of RoboPol in all broadband filters, including R, we have developed a rotating half-wave plate calibrator system. This calibrator system is placed at the beginning of the instrument and enables modulation of polarimetric measurements by beam swapping between all four channels of RoboPol. Using the new calibrator system, we observed multiple polarimetric standard stars over two annual observing seasons with RoboPol. This has enabled us to achieve a polarimetric accuracy of better than 0.05 % in both $q$ and $u$, and 0.5 degrees in polarization angle across all filters, enhancing the instrument's performance by a factor of two to three., Comment: 11 pages; presented at 2024 SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation conference

Haystack and Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) observations recently revealed strong sinusoidal total flux density variations that maintained coherence between 1975 and 2021 in the blazar PKS 2131-021 ($z=1.283)$. This was interpreted as possible evidence of a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB). Extended observations through 2023 show coherence over 47.9~years, with an observed period $P_\textrm{15 GHz}=(1739.3 \pm 1.2) \, {\rm days}$. We reject, with $p$-value = $5.3 \times 10^{-7}$, the hypothesis that the variations are due to random fluctuations in the red noise tail of the power spectral density. There is clearly a constant-period physical phenomenon in PKS 2131-021 producing coherent intermittent sinusoidal flux density variations. We find the coherent sinusoidal intensity variations extend from below 2.7 GHz to optical frequencies, from which we derive an observed period $P_\textrm{optical}=(1764 \pm 36)$ days. Across this broad frequency range there is a monotonic phase shift in the sinusoidal variations with frequency. The same coherent periodicity is possibly also observed at $\gamma$-ray energies. The importance of well-vetted SMBHB candidates to searches for gravitational waves is pointed out. We estimate the fraction of blazars that are SMBHB candidates to be $>1$ in 100. Wide-Area Linear Optical Polarimeter (WALOP)-South is the first wide-field and survey-capacity polarimeter in the optical wavelengths. On schedule for commissioning in 2024, it will be mounted on the 1 m SAAO telescope in Sutherland Observatory, South Africa to undertake the PASIPHAE sky survey. PASIPHAE program will create the first polarimetric sky map in the optical wavelengths, spanning more than 2000 square degrees of the southern Galactic region. The innovative design of WALOP-South will enable it to measure the linear polarization (Stokes parameters $q$ and $u$), in a single exposure, of all sources in a field of view (FoV) of $35\times35$ arcminutes-squared in the SDSS-r broadband and narrowband filters between 500-750 nm with 0.1 % polarization accuracy. The unique goals of the instrument place very stringent systems engineering goals, including on the performance of the optical, polarimetric, optomechanical, and electronic subsystems. All the subsystems have been designed carefully to meet the overall instrument performance goals. As of May 2024, all the instrument optical and mechanical subsystems have been assembled and are currently getting tested and integrated. The complete testing and characterization of the instrument in the lab is expected to be completed by August 2024. Inverse problems are prevalent in numerous scientific and engineering disciplines, where the objective is to determine unknown parameters within a physical system using indirect measurements or observations. The inherent challenge lies in deducing the most probable parameter values that align with the collected data. This study introduces an algorithm for reconstructing parameters by addressing an inverse problem formulated through differential equations underpinned by uncertain boundary conditions or variant parameters. We adopt a Bayesian approach for parameter inference, delineating the establishment of prior, likelihood, and posterior distributions, and the subsequent resolution of the maximum a posteriori problem via numerical optimization techniques. The proposed algorithm is applied to the task of magnetic field reconstruction within a conical domain, demonstrating precise recovery of the true parameter values., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures

Cosmic ray (CR) knees (spectral steepenings) encode information on CR accelerator populations. We seek population features that imprint onto knee observables in a manner that is robust enough to be discernible even in the presence of significant systematics in CR data. In particular, we explore how diversity among population members could imprint on the knee phenomenology, under the assumption that a knee is due to a fixed-rigidity cutoff in the source spectra. We use a simple theoretical model for a population of CR accelerators. Each population member accelerates CR to a power-law spectrum, up to a cutoff rigidity. We allow for variance among members, in cutoff rigidity and power-law slope. We find that: (a) the slope step of the spectrum is $\sim 0.5$, decreasing weakly with increasing spread in either property; (b) composition always breaks first; (c) the difference between the break energies in composition and flux increases with increasing diversity; (d) composition and flux break together only if population diversity is minimal. These trends are robust under our assumptions; deviations from them would indicate more complex physics than encoded in our simple model. Comparing these trends with observed CR knees, we conclude that: (i) the primary knee at $\sim 4\times10^{15}$ eV is consistent with a constant-rigidity cutoff according to KASCADE-Grande data processed with post-LHC hadronic models, but not according to other datasets; (ii) the second knee at $\sim 5 \times 10^{17}$ eV requires more complexity than our model; (iii) the spectral feature identified by Auger at $\sim 10^{19}$ eV is consistent with a constant-rigidity source cutoff only if there is a substantial spread in both cutoff rigidity and slope. Density profiles are important tools in galaxy cluster research, offering insights into clusters dynamical states and their relationship with the broader Universe. While these profiles provide valuable information about the matter content of the Universe, their utility in understanding its dark energy component has remained limited due a lack of tools allowing us to study the transition from cluster portions that are relaxed and infalling, to those that are merging with the Hubble flow. In this work we investigate signatures of this transition in stacked density profiles of simulated cluster-sized halos at different redshifts. To highlight the Hubble flow around clusters we use their turnaround radius to normalize stacked simulated density profiles and calculate their logarithmic slope. Then, we complement our analysis by modeling the outer portions of these profiles assuming Gaussian early Universe statistics and spherical collapse without shell-crossing. We find the logarithmic slope of median cluster density profiles beyond the turnaround radius - where the Hubble flow dominates - to be Universal and well described by our model. Importantly, we find the slope of the profiles to diverge from the SCM prediction from within the turnaround radius where the actual profiles exhibit caustics which give rise to the splashback feature. We suggest utilizing this divergence from the spherical collapse model as a method to identify the turnaround radius in stacked cluster density profiles, offering a new perspective on understanding cluster dynamics and their cosmological implications., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to A&A

(abridged) Ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are extremely energetic charged particles with energies surpassing $10^{18}$ eV. Their sources remain elusive, obscured by deflections caused by the Galactic magnetic field (GMF). This challenge is further complicated by our limited understanding of the three-dimensional structure of the GMF, as current GMF observations consist primarily of quantities integrated along the line-of-sight (LOS). Nevertheless, data from upcoming stellar polarisation surveys along with Gaia's stellar parallax data are expected to yield local GMF measurements.. In this work, we employ methods of Bayesian statistical inference in order to sample the posterior distribution of the GMF within part of the Galaxy. By assuming a known rigidity and arrival direction of an UHECR, we backtrack its trajectory through various GMF configurations drawn from the posterior distribution. Our objective is to rigorously evaluate our algorithm's performance in scenarios that closely mirror the setting of expected future applications. In pursuit of this, we condition the posterior to synthetic integrated LOS measurements of the GMF, in addition to synthetic local POS-component measurements. In this proof of concept work, we assume the ground truth to be a magnetic field produced by a dynamo simulation of the Galactic ISM. Our results demonstrate that for all locations of the observed arrival direction on the POS, our algorithm is able to substantially update our knowledge on the original arrival direction of UHECRs with rigidity $E/Z = 5 \times 10^{19}$ eV, even in the case of complete absence of LOS information. If integrated data is included in the inference, then the regions of the celestial sphere where the maximum error occurs diminishes greatly. The average matter density within the turnaround scale, which demarcates where galaxies shift from clustering around a structure to joining the expansion of the Universe, is an important cosmological probe. However, a measurement of the mass enclosed by the turnaround radius is difficult. Analyses of the turnaround scale in simulated galaxy clusters place the turnaround radius at about three times the virial radius in a \(\Lambda CDM\) universe and at a (present-day) density contrast with the background matter density of the Universe of \(\delta \sim 11\). Assessing the mass at such extended distances from a cluster's center is a challenge for current mass measurement techniques. Consequently, there is a need to develop and validate new mass-scaling relations, to connect observable masses at cluster interiors with masses at greater distances. Our research aims to establish an analytical framework for the most probable mass profile of galaxy clusters, leading to novel mass scaling relations, allowing us to estimate masses at larger scales. We derive such analytical mass profiles and compare them with those from cosmological simulations. We use excursion set theory, which provides a statistical framework for the density and local environment of dark matter halos, and complement it with the spherical collapse model to follow the non-linear growth of these halos. The profile we developed analytically shows a good agreement (better than 30\%, and dependent on halo mass) with the mass profiles of simulated galaxy clusters. Mass scaling relations are obtained from the analytical profile with offset better than 15\% from the simulated ones. This level of precision highlights the potential of our model for probing structure formation dynamics at the outskirts of galaxy clusters., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. Published in A&A

The mean matter density within the turnaround radius, which is the boundary that separates a nonexpanding structure from the Hubble flow, was recently proposed as a novel cosmological probe. According to the spherical collapse model, the evolution with cosmic time of this turnaround density, $\rm \rho_{ta}(z)$, can be used to determine both $\rm \Omega_m$ and $\Omega_\Lambda$, independently of any other currently used probe. The properties of $\rm \rho_{ta}$ predicted by the spherical collapse model were also shown to persist in the presence of full three-dimensional effects in $\rm \Lambda$CDM N-body cosmological simulations when considering galaxy clusters at the present time, $z=0$. However, a small offset was discovered between the spherical-collapse prediction of the value of $\rho_{ta}$ at $z=0$ and its value measured in simulations. In this letter, we explore whether this offset evolves with cosmic time; whether it differs in different cosmologies; whether its origin can be confidently identified; and whether it can be corrected. We found that the offset does evolve slightly with redshift, and that it correlates strongly with the deviation from spherical symmetry of the dark matter halo distribution inside and outside of the turnaround radius. We used an appropriate metric to quantify deviations in the environment of a structure from spherical symmetry. We found that using this metric, we can construct a sphericity-selected sample of halos for which the offset of $\rho_{ta}$ from the spherical collapse prediction is zero, independently of redshift and cosmology. We found that a sphericity-selected halo sample allows us to recover the simulated cosmology, and we conclude that the turnaround density evolution indeed encodes the cosmology in N-body simulations., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

(abridged) Ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are highly energetic charged particles with energies exceeding $10^{18}$ eV. Identifying their sources and production mechanism can provide insight into many open questions in astrophysics and high energy physics. However, the Galactic magnetic field (GMF) deflects UHECRs, and the high uncertainties in our current understanding of the $3$-dimensional structure of the GMF does not permit us to accurately determine their true arrival direction on the plane of the sky (PoS). This difficulty arises from the fact that currently all GMF observations are integrated along the line-of-sight (LoS). Upcoming stellar optopolarimetric surveys as well as Gaia data on stellar parallaxes, are expected to provide local measurements of the GMF in the near future. In this paper, we evaluate the reconstruction of the GMF in a limited region of the Galaxy given sparse and local GMF measurements within that region, through Bayesian inference using principles of Information Field Theory. We backtrack UHECRs through GMF configurations drawn from the posterior to improve our knowledge of their true arrival directions. We show that, for a weakly turbulent GMF, it is possible to correct for its effect on the observed arrival direction of UHECRs to within $\sim 3^\circ$. For completely turbulent fields, we show that our procedure can still be used to significantly improve our knowledge on the true arrival direction of UHECRs., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

The nature of dark matter (DM) is still under intense debate. Sub-galactic scales are particularly critical, as different, currently viable DM models make diverse predictions on the expected abundance and density profile of DM haloes on these scales. We investigate the ability of sub-galactic DM haloes to act as strong lenses on background compact sources, producing gravitational lensing events on milli-arcsecond scales (milli-lenses), for different DM models. For each DM scenario, we explore whether a sample of $\sim$ 5000 distant sources is sufficient to detect at least one milli-lens. We develop a semi-analytical model to estimate the milli-lensing optical depth as a function of the source's redshift for various DM models. We employ the Press-Schechter formalism, as well as results from recent N-body simulations to compute the halo mass function, taking into account the appropriate spherically averaged density profile of haloes for each DM model. We treat the lensing system as a point-mass lens and invoke the effective surface mass density threshold to calculate the fraction of a halo that acts as a gravitational lens. We study three classes of dark matter models: cold DM, warm DM, and self-interacting DM. We find that haloes consisting of warm DM turn out to be optically thin for strong gravitational milli-lensing (zero expected lensing events). CDM haloes may produce lensing events depending on the steepness of the concentration-mass relation. Self-interacting DM haloes can efficiently act as gravitational milli-lenses only if haloes experience gravothermal collapse, resulting in highly dense central cores., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. The Wide-Area Linear Optical Polarimeter (WALOP)-South instrument is an upcoming wide-field and high-accuracy optical polarimeter to be used as a survey instrument for carrying out the Polar-Areas Stellar Imaging in Polarization High Accuracy Experiment (PASIPHAE) program. Designed to operate as a one-shot four-channel and four-camera imaging polarimeter, it will have a field of view of $35\times 35$ arcminutes and will measure the Stokes parameters $I$, $q$, and $u$ in a single exposure in the SDSS-r broadband filter. The design goal for the instrument is to achieve an overall polarimetric measurement accuracy of 0.1 % over the entire field of view. We present here the complete polarimetric modeling of the instrument, characterizing the amount and sources of instrumental polarization. To accurately retrieve the real Stokes parameters of a source from the measured values, we have developed a calibration method for the instrument. Using this calibration method and simulated data, we demonstrate how to correct instrumental polarization and obtain 0.1 % accuracy in the degree of polarization, $p$. Additionally, we tested and validated the calibration method by implementing it on a table-top WALOP-like test-bed polarimeter in the laboratory., Comment: 34 pages, 24 figures. Molecular clouds in the central molecular zone (CMZ) have been observed to feature turbulent line widths that are significantly higher, and scale with cloud size more steeply, than in the rest of the Milky Way. In the same Galactic region, the stellar density is also much higher than in the rest of the Milky Way, and the vertical stellar velocity dispersion is large, meaning that even young stars are likely to cross the entire vertical extent of the CMZ within their lifetimes. Here, we investigate whether interactions of CMZ molecular clouds with crossing stars can account for the extraordinary properties of observed turbulence in this part of the Galaxy. We calculated the rate of energy deposition by stars crossing CMZ clouds due to (a) stellar winds and (b) dynamical friction, and compared it to the rate of turbulence decay. We calculated the predicted scaling of turbulence line width with cloud size in each case. We find that energy deposition by stellar winds of crossing massive stars can account for both the level and the scaling of CMZ cloud turbulence with cloud size. We also find that the mechanism stops being effective at a Galactocentric distance comparable to the CMZ extent. WALOP (Wide-Area Linear Optical Polarimeter)-South, to be mounted on the 1m SAAO telescope in South Africa, is first of the two WALOP instruments currently under development for carrying out the PASIPHAE survey. Scheduled for commissioning in the year 2021, the WALOP instruments will be used to measure the linear polarization of around $10^{6}$ stars in the SDSS-r broadband with $0.1~\%$ polarimetric accuracy, covering 4000 square degrees in the Galactic polar regions. The combined capabilities of one-shot linear polarimetry, high polarimetric accuracy ($< 0.1~\%$) and polarimetric sensitivity ($< 0.05~\%$), and a large field of view (FOV) of $35\times35~arcminutes$ make WALOP-South a unique astronomical instrument. In a single exposure, it is designed to measure the Stokes parameters $I$, $q$ and $u$ in the SDSS-r broadband and narrowband filters between $500-700~nm$. During each measurement, four images of the full field corresponding to the polarization angles of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$ will be imaged on four detectors and carrying out differential photometry on these images will yield the Stokes parameters. Major challenges in designing WALOP-South instrument include- (a) in the optical design, correcting for the spectral dispersion introduced by large split angle Wollaston Prisms used as polarization analyzers as well as aberrations from the wide field, and (b) making an optomechanical design adherent to the tolerances required to obtain good imaging and polarimetric performance under all temperature conditions as well as telescope pointing positions. Designed to achieve polarimetric sensitivity of $0.05~\%$ across a $35\times35$ arcminute field of view, it will be capable of measuring the Stokes parameters I, q and u in a single exposure in the SDSS-r broadband and narrowband filters between $0.5~{\mu}m - 0.7~{\mu}m$. For each measurement, four images of the full field corresponding to linear polarization angles of 0 deg, 45 deg, 90 deg and 135 deg in the instrument coordinate system will be created on four detectors from which the Stokes parameters can be found using differential photometry. In designing the optical system, major challenges included correcting for the dispersion introduced by large split angle Wollaston Prisms used as analysers as well as other aberrations from the entire field to obtain imaging quality PSF at the detector. Spherical collapse predicts that a single value of the turnaround density (average matter density within the scale on which a structure detaches from the Hubble flow) characterizes all cosmic structures at the same redshift. It has been recently shown by Korkidis et al. that this feature persists in complex non-spherical galaxy clusters identified in N-body simulations. Here we show that the low-redshift evolution of the turnaround density constrains the cosmological parameters, and that it can be used to derive a local constraint on $\Omega_\Lambda$ alone, independent of $\Omega_m$. We use N-body simulations to examine whether a characteristic turnaround radius, as predicted from the spherical collapse model in a $\rm {\Lambda CDM}$ Universe, can be meaningfully identified for galaxy clusters, in the presence of full three-dimensional effects. We use The Dark Sky Simulations and Illustris-TNG dark-matter--only cosmological runs to calculate radial velocity profiles around collapsed structures, extending out to many times the virial radius $R_{200}$. There, the turnaround radius can be unambiguously identified as the largest non-expanding scale around a center of gravity. We find that: (a) Indeed, a single turnaround scale can meaningfully describe strongly non-spherical structures. (b) For halos of masses $M_{200}>10^{13}M_\odot$, the turnaround radius $R_{ta}$ scales with the enclosed mass $M_{ta}$ as $M_{ta}^{1/3}$, as predicted by the spherical collapse model. (c) The deviation of $R_{ta}$ in simulated halos from the spherical collapse model prediction is insensitive to halo asphericity. Rather, it is sensitive to the tidal forces due to massive neighbors when such are present. (d) Halos exhibit a characteristic average density within the turnaround scale. This characteristic density is dependent on cosmology and redshift. For the present cosmic epoch and for concordance cosmological parameters ($\Omega_m \sim 0.7$; $\Omega_\Lambda \sim 0.3$) turnaround structures exhibit an average matter density contrast with the background Universe of $\delta \sim 11$. Thus $R_{ta}$ is equivalent to $R_{11}$ -- in a way analogous to defining the "virial" radius as $R_{200}$ -- with the advantage that $R_{11}$ is shown in this work to correspond to a kinematically relevant scale in N-body simulations., Comment: Submitted to A&A, nine pages, 10 figures

After three years of polarimetric monitoring of blazars, the RoboPol project has uncovered several key characteristics of polarimetric rotations in the optical for these most variable sources. The most important of these is that polarization properties of the synchrotron emission in the optical appear to be directly linked with gamma-ray activity. In this paper, we discuss the evidence for this connection, as well as the broader features of polarimetric behavior in blazars that are key in making progress with theoretical modeling of blazar emission.

The high-energy universe has revealed that energetic particles are ubiquitous in the cosmos and play a vital role in the cultivation of cosmic environments on all scales. Though they play a key role in cultivating the cosmological environment and/or enabling our studies of it, there is still much we do not know about AGNs and GRBs, particularly the avenue in which and through which they supply radiation and energetic particles, namely their jets. PASIPHAE (the Polar-Areas Stellar Imaging in Polarization High-Accuracy Experiment) is an optopolarimetric survey aiming to measure the linear polarization from millions of stars, and use these to create a three-dimensional tomographic map of the magnetic field threading dust clouds within the Milky Way. This map will provide invaluable information for future CMB B-mode experiments searching for inflationary gravitational waves, providing unique information regarding line-of-sight integration effects. Optical polarization observations of a large number of stars at known distances, tracing the same dust that emits polarized microwaves, can map the magnetic field between them. The Gaia mission is measuring distances to a billion stars, providing an opportunity to produce a tomographic map of Galactic magnetic field directions, using optical polarization of starlight. Such a map will not only boost CMB polarization foreground removal, but it will also have a profound impact in a wide range of astrophysical research, including interstellar medium physics, high-energy astrophysics, and evolution of the Galaxy. Taking advantage of the novel technology implemented in our high-accuracy Wide-Area Linear Optical Polarimeters (WALOPs) currently under construction at IUCAA, India, we will engage in a large-scale optopolarimetric program that can meet this challenge: a survey of both northern and southern Galactic polar regions targeted by CMB experiments, covering over 10,000 square degrees, which will measure linear optical polarization of over 360 stars per square degree (over 3.5 million stars, a 1000-fold increase over the state of the art). The survey will be conducted concurrently from the South African Astronomical Observatory in Sutherland, South Africa in the southern hemisphere, and the Skinakas Observatory in Crete, Greece, in the north., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

The atomic interstellar medium (ISM) is observed to be full of linear structures that are referred to as "fibers". Fibers exhibit similar properties to linear structures found in molecular clouds known as striations. Suggestive of a similar formation mechanism, both striations and fibers appear to be ordered, quasi-periodic, and well-aligned with the magnetic field. The prevailing formation mechanism for striations involves the excitation of fast magnetosonic waves. Based on this theoretical model, and through a combination of velocity centroids and column density maps, Tritsis et al. (2018) developed a method for estimating the plane-of-sky (POS) magnetic field from molecular cloud striations. We apply this method in two H\textsc{I} clouds with fibers along the same line-of-sight (LOS) towards the ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) hotspot, at the boundaries of Ursa Major. For the cloud located closer to Earth, where Zeeman observations from the literature were also available, we find general agreement in the distributions of the LOS and POS components of the magnetic field. We find relatively large values for the total magnetic field (ranging from $\sim$$\rm{10}$ to $\sim$$\rm{20} ~\rm{\mu G}$) and an average projection angle with respect to the LOS of $\sim$ 50$^\circ$. For the cloud located further away, we also find a large value for the POS component of the magnetic field of $15^{+8}_{-3}~\rm{\mu G}$. We discuss the potential of our new magnetic-field tomography method for large-scale application. The availability of large datasets with stellar distance and polarization information will enable a tomographic reconstruction of the (plane-of-the-sky-projected) interstellar magnetic field in the near future. We demonstrate the feasibility of such a decomposition within a small region of the diffuse ISM. We combine measurements of starlight (R-band) linear polarization obtained using the RoboPol polarimeter with stellar distances from the second Gaia data release. The stellar sample is brighter than 17 mag in the R band and reaches out to several kpc from the Sun. HI emission spectra reveal the existence of two distinct clouds along the line of sight. We decompose the line-of-sight-integrated stellar polarizations to obtain the mean polarization properties of the two clouds. The two clouds exhibit significant differences in terms of column density and polarization properties. Their mean plane-of-the-sky magnetic field orientation differs by 60 degrees. We show how our tomographic decomposition can be used to constrain our estimates of the polarizing efficiency of the clouds as well as the frequency dependence of the polarization angle of polarized dust emission. We also demonstrate a new method to constrain cloud distances based on this decomposition. In this paper we develop a new semianalytical approach to quantifying the density profile of outer dark matter halos, motivated by the remarkable universality those profiles, for a wide range of dynamical parameters of the inner halos. We show that our minimalist spherical collapse based model is robust under significant variations of its input parameters around the currently known values and we identify the turnaround radius as the most important scale of the problem. Based on that observation, we argue that the turnaround radius accurately represents the transition to the external density profile, and we provide a universal test based on geometrical characteristics of the outer profile as a proposal for measuring the turnaround radius of structures., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

The latest observations of extensive air showers (EAS) induced by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) appear to indicate, prima facie, a transition to heavy primaries at the highest energies. However, this interpretation, which is based on extrapolations of the Standard Model (SM) to ultra-LHC energies, is strained from both astrophysical and particle phenomenology perspectives. We consider the alternative that after some energy threshold, the first collision of the primary in the atmosphere results in a state, the decay of which leads to a considerably increased shower particle multiplicity, so that light-primary EAS appear heavy-like. We show that a minimal implementation of such a model yields predictions for the average EAS depth and shower-to-shower fluctuations that are consistent with each other, and an excellent fit to Auger data. If such an effect indeed takes place, we predict that: (a) the center-of-momentum (CM) energy threshold for the effect is of order 50 TeV; (b) the probability with which the effect occurs is high, and it will be detected easily by next-generation accelerators; (c) the increase in multiplicity compared to the SM prediction grows with CM energy roughly as $\sim E_{\rm CM}$; (d) the cosmic-ray composition at the highest energies is light. We demonstrate that, in the context of the $\Lambda$CDM model, it is in principle possible to measure the value of the cosmological constant by tracing, across cosmic time, the evolution of the turnaround radius of cosmic structures. The novelty of the presented method is that it is local, in the sense that it uses the effect of the cosmological constant on the relatively short scales of cosmic structures and not on the dynamics of the Universe at its largest scales. Emission from blazar jets in the ultraviolet, optical, and infrared is polarized. If these low-energy photons were inverse-Compton scattered, the upscattered high-energy photons retain a fraction of the polarization. Current and future X-ray and gamma-ray polarimeters such as INTEGRAL-SPI, PoGOLITE, X-Calibur, Gamma-Ray Burst Polarimeter, GEMS-like missions, ASTRO-H, and POLARIX have the potential to discover polarized X-rays and gamma-rays from blazar jets for the first time. Detection of such polarization will open a qualitatively new window into high-energy blazar emission; actual measurements of polarization degree and angle will quantitatively test theories of jet emission mechanisms. We examine the detection prospects of blazars by these polarimetry missions using examples of 3C 279, PKS 1510-089, and 3C 454.3, bright sources with relatively high degrees of low-energy polarization. We conclude that while balloon polarimeters will be challenged to detect blazars within reasonable observational times (with X-Calibur offering the most promising prospects), space-based missions should detect the brightest blazars for polarization fractions down to a few percent. Typical flaring activity of blazars could boost the overall number of polarimetric detections by nearly a factor of five to six purely accounting for flux increase of the brightest of the comprehensive, all-sky, Fermi-LAT blazar distribution. The instantaneous increase in the number of detections is approximately a factor of two, assuming a duty cycle of 20% for every source. The detectability of particular blazars may be reduced if variations in the flux and polarization fraction are anticorrelated. In $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, structure formation is halted shortly after dark energy dominates the mass/energy budget of the Universe. A manifestation of this effect is that in such a cosmology the turnaround radius has an upper bound. Recently, a new, local, test for the existence of dark energy in the form of a cosmological constant was proposed based on this turnaround bound. Before designing an experiment that, through high-precision determination of masses and turnaround radii, will challenge $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, we have to answer two important questions: first, when turnaround-scale structures are predicted to be close enough to their maximum size, so that a possible violation of the bound may be observable. Second, which is the best mass scale to target for possible violations of the bound. Using the Press-Schechter formalism, we find that turnaround structures have in practice already stopped forming, and consequently, the turnaround radius of structures must be very close to the maximum value today. We also find that the mass scale of $\sim 10^{13} M_\odot$ characterizes turnaround structures that start to form in a statistically important number density today. This mass scale also separates turnaround structures with different cosmological evolution: smaller structures are no longer readjusting their mass distribution inside the turnaround scale, they asymptotically approach their ultimate abundance from higher values, and they are common enough to have, at some epoch, experienced major mergers with structures of comparable mass; larger structures exhibit the opposite behavior. We call this mass scale the transitional mass scale and we argue that it is the optimal for the purpose outlined above. Recent Planck results have shown that radiation from the cosmic microwave background passes through foregrounds in which aligned dust grains produce polarized dust emission, even in regions of the sky with the lowest level of dust emission. One of the most commonly used ways to remove the dust foreground is to extrapolate the polarized dust emission signal from frequencies where it dominates (e.g., ~ 350 GHz) to frequencies commonly targeted by cosmic microwave background experiments (e.g., ~150 GHz). In this paper, we describe an interstellar medium effect that can lead to decorrelation of the dust emission polarization pattern between different frequencies due to multiple contributions along the line of sight. Using a simple 2-cloud model we show that there are two conditions under which this decorrelation can be large: (a) the ratio of polarized intensities between the two clouds changes between the two frequencies; (b) the magnetic fields between the two clouds contributing along a line of sight are significantly misaligned. In such cases, the 350 GHz polarized sky map is not predictive of that at 150 GHz. We present results from four years of twice-weekly 15 GHz radio monitoring of about 1500 blazars with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory 40 m telescope. Using the intrinsic modulation index to measure variability amplitude, we find that, with $>\!6\sigma$ significance, the radio variability of radio-selected gamma-ray-loud blazars is stronger than that of gamma-ray-quiet blazars. Our extended data set also includes at least 21 months of data for all AGN with `clean' associations in the Fermi Large Area Telescope First AGN catalogue, 1LAC. With these additional data we examine the radio variability properties of a gamma-ray-selected blazar sample. Within this sample, we find no evidence for a connection between radio variability amplitude and optical classification. In contrast, for our radio-selected sample we find that the BL Lac object subpopulation is more variable than the flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) subpopulation. Radio variability is found to correlate with the synchrotron peak frequency, with low- and intermediate-synchrotron-peaked blazars varying less than high-synchrotron-peaked ones. Our intuitive understanding of cosmic structure formation works best in scales small enough so that bound, relaxed gravitating systems are no longer adjusting their radius; and large enough so that space and matter follow the average expansion of the Universe. Yet one of the most robust predictions of $\Lambda$CDM cosmology concerns the scale that separates these limits: the turnaround radius, which is the non-expanding shell furthest away from the center of a bound structure. The maximum possible value of the turnaround radius within the framework of the $\Lambda$CDM model is, for a given mass $M$, equal to $(3GM/\Lambda c^2)^{1/3}$, with $G$ Newton's constant and $c$ the speed of light, independently of cosmic epoch, exact nature of dark matter, or baryonic effects. The total anisotropy of a diffuse background composed of two or more sources, such as the Fermi-LAT--measured gamma-ray background, is set by the anisotropy of each source population and the contribution of each population to the total intensity. The total anisotropy as a function of energy (the anisotropy energy spectrum) will modulate as the relative contributions of the sources change, implying that the anisotropy energy spectrum also encodes the intensity spectrum of each source class. We develop techniques, applicable to any such diffuse background, for unraveling the intensity spectrum of each component source population given a measurement of the total intensity spectrum and the total anisotropy energy spectrum, without introducing \emph{a priori} assumptions about the spectra of the source classes. We demonstrate the potential of these methods by applying them to example scenarios for the composition of the Fermi-LAT gamma-ray background consistent with current data and feasible within 10 years of observation., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) may leave an imprint on the angular anisotropy of the extragalactic gamma-ray background through its effect on electromagnetic cascades triggered by interactions between very high energy photons and the extragalactic background light. A strong IGMF will deflect secondary particles produced in these cascades and will thus tend to isotropize lower energy cascade photons, thereby inducing a modulation in the anisotropy energy spectrum of the gamma-ray background. Here we present a simple, proof-of-concept calculation of the magnitude of this effect and demonstrate that current Fermi data already seem to prefer non-negligible IGMF values. Since late 2007, we have been monitoring a large sample of known and likely gamma-ray-loud blazars at 15 GHz twice per week with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) 40 m Telescope. Our initial sample included the 1158 sources above declination -20 degrees from the Candidate Gamma-Ray Blazar Survey (CGRaBS), and we have since added nearly 400 more sources, including all blazars associated with Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) detections in the First AGN Catalog (1LAC). Here, we describe the new sample and present results for 2008 through early 2011. Using statistical likelihood analyses, we compare the variability amplitude for various sub-populations within our sample. These include comparisons of gamma-ray-loud versus gamma-ray-quiet objects, BL Lac objects versus flat-spectrum radio quasars, and a study of the variability amplitude trend with redshift. We also describe KuPol, the new digital Ku-band receiver being constructed for the 40 m telescope. The spectral shapes of the contributions of different classes of unresolved gamma-ray emitters can provide insight into their relative contributions to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB) and the natures of their spectra at GeV energies. We calculate the spectral shapes of the contributions to the EGB arising from BL Lacertae type objects (BL Lacs) and flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) assuming blazar spectra can be described as broken power laws. We fit the resulting total blazar spectral shape to the Fermi Large Area Telescope measurements of the EGB, finding that the best-fit shape reproduces well the shape of the Fermi EGB for various break scenarios. We conclude that a scenario in which the contribution of blazars is dominant cannot be excluded on spectral grounds alone, even if spectral breaks are shown to be common among Fermi blazars. We also find that while the observation of a featureless (within uncertainties) power-law EGB spectrum by Fermi does not necessarily imply a single class of contributing unresolved sources with featureless individual spectra, such an observation and the collective spectra of the separate contributing populations determine the ratios of their contributions. Pulsars emerge in the Fermi era as a sizable population of gamma-ray sources. Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) constitute an older subpopulation whose sky distribution extends to high Galactic latitudes, and it has been suggested that unresolved members of this class may contribute a significant fraction of the measured large-scale isotropic gamma-ray background (IGRB). We investigate the possible energy-dependent contribution of unresolved MSPs to the anisotropy of the Fermi-measured IGRB. For observationally-motivated MSP population models, we show that the preliminary Fermi anisotropy measurement places an interesting constraint on the abundance of MSPs in the Galaxy and the typical MSP flux, about an order of magnitude stronger than constraints on this population derived from the intensity of the IGRB alone. We also examine the possibility of a MSP component in the IGRB mimicking a dark matter signal in anisotropy-based searches, and conclude that the energy dependence of an anisotropy signature would distinguish MSPs from all but very light dark matter candidates., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; minor revisions; matches version accepted to MNRAS

The Large Area Telescope (LAT) aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope provides an unprecedented opportunity to study gamma-ray blazars. To capitalize on this opportunity, beginning in late 2007, about a year before the start of LAT science operations, we began a large-scale, fast-cadence 15 GHz radio monitoring program with the 40-m telescope at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). This program began with the 1158 northern (declination>-20 deg) sources from the Candidate Gamma-ray Blazar Survey (CGRaBS) and now encompasses over 1500 sources, each observed twice per week with a ~4 mJy (minimum) and 3% (typical) uncertainty. Here, we describe this monitoring program and our methods, and present radio light curves from the first two years (2008 and 2009). As a first application, we combine these data with a novel measure of light curve variability amplitude, the intrinsic modulation index, through a likelihood analysis to examine the variability properties of subpopulations of our sample. We demonstrate that, with high significance (7-sigma), gamma-ray-loud blazars detected by the LAT during its first 11 months of operation vary with about a factor of two greater amplitude than do the gamma-ray-quiet blazars in our sample. We also find a significant (3-sigma) difference between variability amplitude in BL Lacertae objects and flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), with the former exhibiting larger variability amplitudes. Finally, low-redshift (z<1) FSRQs are found to vary more strongly than high-redshift FSRQs, with 3-sigma significance. These findings represent an important step toward understanding why some blazars emit gamma-rays while others, with apparently similar properties, remain silent., Comment: 23 pages, 24 figures. The origin of the extragalactic gamma-ray background is a pressing cosmological mystery. The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has recently measured the intensity and spectrum of this background; both are substantially different from previous measurements. We present a novel calculation of the gamma-ray background from normal star-forming galaxies. Contrary to long-standing expectations, we find that numerous but individually faint normal galaxies may comprise the bulk of the Fermi signal, rather than rare but intrinsically bright active galaxies. This result has wide-ranging implications, including: the possibility to probe the cosmic star formation history with gamma rays; the ability to infer the cosmological evolution of cosmic rays and galactic magnetic fields; and an increased likelihood of identifying subdominant components from rare sources (e.g., dark matter clumps) through their large anisotropy., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. The energy-dependence of the anisotropy (the anisotropy energy spectrum) of the large-scale diffuse gamma-ray background can reveal the presence of multiple source populations. Annihilating dark matter in the substructure of the Milky Way halo could give rise to a modulation in the anisotropy energy spectrum of the diffuse gamma-ray emission measured by Fermi, enabling the detection of a dark matter signal. We determine the detectability of a dark-matter-induced modulation for scenarios in which unresolved blazars are the primary contributor to the measured emission above ~1 GeV and find that in some scenarios pair-annihilation cross sections of order the value expected for thermal relic dark matter can produce a detectable feature. High-energy photons from cosmological emitters suffer attenuation due to pair production interactions with the extragalactic background light (EBL). The collective emission of any high-energy emitting cosmological population will exhibit an absorption feature at the highest energies. We calculate this absorption feature in the collective emission of blazars for various models of the blazar gamma-ray luminosity function (GLF) and the EBL. We find that models of the blazar GLF that predict higher relative contributions of high-redshift blazars to the blazar collective spectrum result in emission that is more susceptible to attenuation by the EBL, and hence result in more prominent absorption features, allowing for better differentiation amongst EBL models. We thus demonstrate that observations of such an absorption feature will contain information regarding both the blazar GLF and the EBL, and we discuss tests for EBL models and the blazar GLF that will become possible with upcoming Fermi observations., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, emulateapj format, to be published in Astrophysical Journal

Star-forming galaxies are predicted to contribute considerably to the cosmic gamma-ray background (CGB) as they are confirmed gamma-ray emitters and are the most numerous population of gamma-ray sources, although individually faint. Even though the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope will be able to resolve few star-forming galaxies individually, their fractional contribution to the CGB should become far more significant than it was for past measurements of the CGB as many of the brighter, formerly unresolved sources will be resolved out. Thus, the clustering feature of galaxies imprinted on the CGB might be detectable by Fermi. In anticipation of such measurements, we calculate the predicted angular auto-power and cross-power spectra of the CGB from normal galaxies. We find that the amplitude of the auto-power spectrum is smaller than that for other sources such as blazars and dark-matter annihilation; the shape is also characteristic. We also show that the cross-power spectrum with galaxy surveys features larger amplitude. Fermi should be able to detect the correlation signature in both the auto-power and cross-power spectra at angular scales of ~1-10 deg after 5-yr of operation. Such a detection would be valuable in confirming the level of the star-forming galaxy contribution to the CGB, and more importantly, in serving as a tool in the effort to discriminate between possible origins of the CGB., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures; accepted to MNRAS

Dark matter annihilation in Galactic substructure will produce diffuse gamma-ray emission of remarkably constant intensity across the sky, making it difficult to disentangle this Galactic dark matter signal from the extragalactic gamma-ray background. We show that if Galactic dark matter contributes a modest fraction of the measured emission in an energy range accessible to the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, the energy dependence of the angular power spectrum of the total measured emission could be used to confidently identify gamma rays from Galactic dark matter substructure., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, added 1 reference, published in PRL

The spectral shape of the unresolved emission from different classes of gamma-ray emitters can be used to disentangle the contributions from these populations to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB). We present a calculation of the unabsorbed spectral shape of the unresolved blazar contribution to the EGRB starting from the spectral index distribution (SID) of resolved EGRET blazars derived through a maximum-likelihood analysis accounting for measurement errors. In addition, we explicitly calculate the uncertainty in this theoretically predicted spectral shape, which enters through the spectral index distribution parameters. We find that: (a) the unresolved blazar emission spectrum is only mildly convex, and thus, even if blazars are shown by GLAST to be a dominant contribution to the ERGB at lower energies, they may be insufficient to explain the EGRB at higher energies; (b) the theoretically predicted unresolved spectral shape involves significant uncertainties due to the limited constraints provided by EGRET data on the SID parameters, which are comparable to the statistical uncertainties of the observed EGRET EGRB at high energies; (c) the increased number statistics which will be provided by GLAST will be sufficient to reduce this uncertainty by at least a factor of three., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The intrinsic distribution of spectral indices in GeV energies of gamma-ray--loud blazars is a critical input in determining the spectral shape of the unresolved blazar contribution to the diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background, as well as an important test of blazar emission theories. We present a maximum-likelihood method of determining the intrinsic spectral index distribution (ISID) of a population of gamma-ray emitters which accounts for error in measurement of individual spectral indices, and we apply it to EGRET blazars. We find that the most likely Gaussian ISID for EGRET blazars has a mean of 2.27 and a standard deviation of 0.20. We additionally find some indication that FSRQs and BL Lacs may have different ISIDs (with BL Lacs being harder). We also test for spectral index hardening associated with blazar variability for which we find no evidence. Finally, we produce simulated GLAST spectral index datasets and perform the same analyses. With improved statistics due to the much larger number of resolvable blazars, GLAST data will help us determine the ISIDs with much improved accuracy. Should any difference exist between the ISIDs of BL Lacs and FSRQs or between the ISIDs of blazars in the quiescent and flaring states, GLAST data will be adequate to separate these ISIDs at a significance better than 3 sigma., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, emulateapj; accepted for publication in ApJ
