We investigate ultrafast harmonic generation (HG) in Si:B, driven by intense pump pulses with fields reaching ~100 kV/cm and a carrier frequency of 300 GHz, at 4 K and 300 K, both experimentally and theoretically. We report several novel findings concerning the nonlinear charge carrier dynamics in intense sub-THz fields. (i) Harmonics of order up to n=9 are observed at room temperature, while at low temperature we can resolve harmonics reaching even n=13. The susceptibility per charge carrier at moderate field strength is as high as for charge carriers in graphene, considered to be one of the materials with the strongest sub-THz nonlinear response. (ii) For T=300 K, where the charge carriers bound to acceptors are fully thermally ionized into the valence subbands, the susceptibility values decrease with increasing field strength. Simulations incorporating multi-valence-band Monte-Carlo and finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) propagation show that here, the HG process becomes increasingly dominated by energy-dependent scattering rates over the contribution from band non-parabolicity, due to the onset of optical-phonon emission, which ultimately leads to the saturation at high fields. (iii) At T=4 K, where the majority of charges are bound to acceptors, we observe a drastic rise of the HG yields for internal pump fields of 30 kV/cm, as one reaches the threshold for tunnel ionization. We disentangle the HG contributions in this case into contributions from the initial 'generational'- and subsequent band-nonlinearities, and show that scattering seriously degrades any coherent recollision during the subsequent oscillation of the holes.

Synthesized micro- and nanotubes composed of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as MoS$_2$ are promising for many applications in nanophotonics, because they combine the abilities to emit strong exciton luminescence and to act as whispering gallery microcavities even at room temperature. In addition to tubes in the form of hollow cylinders, there is an insufficiently-studied class of twisted tubes, the flattened cross section of which rotates along the tube axis. As shown by theoretical analysis, in such nanotubes the interaction of electromagnetic waves excited at opposite sides of the cross section can cause splitting of the whispering gallery modes. By studying micro-photoluminescence spectra measured along individual MoS$_2$ tubes, it has been established that the splitting value, which controls the energies of the split modes, depends exponentially on the aspect ratio of the cross section, which varies in "breathing" tubes, while the relative intensity of the modes in a pair is determined by the angle of rotation of the cross section. These results open up the possibility of creating multifunctional tubular TMDC nanodevices that provide resonant amplification of self-emitting light at adjustable frequencies.

Interstitial magnesium acts as a moderately deep double donor in silicon, and is relatively easily introduced by diffusion. Unlike the case of the chalcogen double donors, the binding energies of the even-parity valley-orbit excited states 1sT$_2$ and 1sE have remained elusive. Here we report on temperature dependence absorption measurements focusing on the neutral charge species. Isotopic enrichment offers cutting-edge properties of materials opening exciting research and development opportunities. In semiconductors, reached progress of ultimate control in growth and doping techniques follows nowadays the high level isotopic purification. This requires deep understanding of isotopic disorder effects and techniques of their effective determination. Isotopic content of both crystal lattice and impurity centers cause the effects, which can be examined by different optical techniques. While disorder in the host lattice can be straight forward evaluated by inelastic light scattering or by SIMS measurements, determination of isotopic contributions of many orders less presented impurities remains challenging and usually observed in high-resolution photoluminescence or optical absorption spectra. Boron-doped diamonds exhibit complex infrared absorption spectra while boron-related luminescence remains unobserved. Boron, as a most light element acting as a hydrogen-like dopant in elemental semiconductors, has a largest relative difference in its isotope masses, and by this, cause the largest isotopic disorder in semiconductors, including diamond, an elemental semiconductor with the lightest atomic mass of a host lattice. This enables an access to the isotopic constitution of boron in diamond by infrared absorption spectroscopy. By comparison of low-temperature absorption spectra of a natural (20% of 10B and 80% of 11B isotopes) and 11B enriched (up to 99%) doped diamonds we differentiate the intracenter transitions related to 10B and to 11B isotopes. We have found that the isotopic spectral lines of the same boron intracenter transition are separated with the energy of about 0.7 meV. This is the largest impurity isotopic shift ever observed in semiconductors doped by hydrogen-like impurity centers.

Deep learning convolutional neural networks have proved to be a powerful tool for MRI analysis. In current work, we explore the potential of the deformable convolutional deep neural network layers for MRI data classification. We propose new 3D deformable convolutions(d-convolutions), implement them in VoxResNet architecture and apply for structural MRI data classification. We show that 3D d-convolutions outperform standard ones and are effective for unprocessed 3D MR images being robust to particular geometrical properties of the data. Segmentation of tumors in brain MRI images is a challenging task, where most recent methods demand large volumes of data with pixel-level annotations, which are generally costly to obtain. In contrast, image-level annotations, where only the presence of lesion is marked, are generally cheap, generated in far larger volumes compared to pixel-level labels, and contain less labeling noise. In the context of brain tumor segmentation, both pixel-level and image-level annotations are commonly available; thus, a natural question arises whether a segmentation procedure could take advantage of both. In the present work we: 1) propose a learning-based framework that allows simultaneous usage of both pixel- and image-level annotations in MRI images to learn a segmentation model for brain tumor; 2) study the influence of comparative amounts of pixel- and image-level annotations on the quality of brain tumor segmentation; 3) compare our approach to the traditional fully-supervised approach and show that the performance of our method in terms of segmentation quality may be competitive., Comment: Accepted to IEEE International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications (ICMLA 2019). The Petaflops supercomputer "Zhores" recently launched in the "Center for Computational and Data-Intensive Science and Engineering" (CDISE) of Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) opens up new exciting opportunities for scientific discoveries in the institute especially in the areas of data-driven modeling, machine learning and artificial intelligence. This supercomputer utilizes the latest generation of Intel and NVidia processors to provide resources for the most compute intensive tasks of the Skoltech scientists working in digital pharma, predictive analytics, photonics, material science, image processing, plasma physics and many more. Currently it places 6th in the Russian and CIS TOP-50 (2018) supercomputer list. In this article we summarize the cluster properties and discuss the measured performance and usage modes of this scientific instrument in Skoltech.

We use the greatly improved optical linewidths provided by highly enriched $^{28}$Si to study a photoluminescence line near 1017 meV previously observed in the luminescence spectrum of natural Si diffused with Mg, and suggested to result from the recombination of an isoelectronic bound exciton localized at a Mg-pair center. In $^{28}$Si this no-phonon line is found to be comprised of five components whose relative intensities closely match the relative abundances of Mg-pairs formed by random combinations of the three stable isotopes of Mg, thus confirming the Mg-pair hypothesis. The deep double donor levels of substitutional chalcogen impurities in silicon have unique optical properties which may enable a spin/photonic quantum technology. The interstitial magnesium impurity (Mg$_i$) in silicon is also a deep double donor but has not yet been studied in the same detail as have the chalcogens. In this study we look at the neutral and singly ionized Mg$_i$ absorption spectra in natural silicon and isotopically enriched 28-silicon in more detail. The 1s(A$_1$) to 1s(T$_2$) transitions, which are very strong for the chalcogens and are central to the proposed spin/photonic quantum technology, could not be detected. We observe the presence of another double donor (Mg$_{i*}$) that may result from Mg$_i$ in a reduced symmetry configuration, most likely due to complexing with another impurity. The neutral species of Mg$_{i*}$ reveal unusual low lying ground state levels detected through temperature dependence studies. We also observe a shallow donor which we identify as a magnesium-boron pair.

We propose a new method to search for light (pseudo-)scalar particles in the spectra of compact astrophysical objects such as magnetars, pulsars, and quasars. On accounts of compact astrophysical objects having intense magnetic fields extending over large volumes, they provide good conditions for efficient photon-particle oscillations via the Primakoff process. In particular, we show that if the coupling constant for light (<1e-2 eV) axions, g>1e-13 [1/GeV] then it is likely that absorption-like features would be detectable in the spectrum of compact astrophysical sources., Comment: Proceedings for the 4th Patras Workshop on Axions, WIMPs and WISPs

We give detailed predictions for the spectral signatures arising from photon-particle oscillations in astrophysical objects. The calculations include quantum electrodynamic effects as well as those due to active relativistic plasma. We show that, by studying the spectra of compact sources, it may be possible to directly detect (pseudo-)scalar particles, such as the axion, with much greater sensitivity, by roughly three orders of magnitude, than is currently achievable by other methods. In particular, if such particles exist with masses m_a<0.01[eV] and coupling constant to the electromagnetic field, g>1e-13[1/GeV], then their oscillation signatures are likely to be lurking in the spectra of magnetars, pulsars, and quasars., Comment: 29 pages (reduced resolution for figs. 3, 4b, 7)
