New localities of Meloe (Bolognaia) rugosus MARSHAM, 1802 (Coleoptera: Meloidae) in southern Poland. During the field research conducted in the period 2016-2023 on the distribution of beetles in S Poland 25 new sites of Meloe (Bolognaia) rugosus MARSHAM, 1802 were found. New localisations are located in 19 UTM squares 10×10 km within 6 southern regions of Poland.

Background: Evaluating the tumor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy is key to planning further therapy of breast cancer. Our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of low-energy and subtraction contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) images in the detection of complete response (CR) for neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer. Methods: A total of 63 female patients were qualified for our retrospective analysis. Low-energy and subtraction CESM images just before the beginning of NAC and as a follow-up examination 2 weeks before the end of chemotherapy were compared with one another and assessed for compliance with the postoperative histopathological examination (HP). The response to preoperative chemotherapy was evaluated based on the RECIST 1.1 criteria (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors). Results: Low-energy images tend to overestimate residual lesions (6.28 mm) and subtraction images tend to underestimate them (2.75 mm). The sensitivity of low-energy images in forecasting CR amounted to 33.33%, while the specificity was 92.86%. In the case of subtraction CESM, the sensitivity amounted to 85.71% and the specificity to 71.42%. Conclusions: CESM is characterized by high sensitivity in the assessment of CR after NAC. The use of only morphological assessment is insufficient. CESM correlates well with the size of residual lesions on histopathological examination but tends to underestimate the dimensions.

Genetic factors can influence the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and the survival of patients. Our previous research led to the identification of genetic variants predisposing to CAD in the Polish population. Since many of them affect the clinical phenotype of the disease, the aim of this study was searching for genetic factors potentially influencing survival in patients with CAD. The study included 276 patients hospitalized due to coronary artery disease. The database of medical history and genotypic results of 29 polymorphisms were used. The endpoint was defined as death from cardiovascular causes. Survival was defined as the period from angiographic confirmation of CAD to death from cardiovascular causes. Three of all the analyzed genes were associated with survival. In the case of the AGT (rs699) and ABCA1 (rs2230806) genes polymorphisms, the risk of death was higher in GG homozygotes compared to the A allele carriers in the 10-year period. In the case of the CYBA (rs72811418) gene polymorphism, the effect on mortality was shown in both 5- and 10-year periods. The TA heterozygotes were predisposed to a higher risk of death than the TT homozygotes. Concluding, the AGT, ABCA1, and CYBA genes polymorphisms influence the risk of death in patients with CAD.

Tissue-engineered human allogeneic skin grafts retrieved from a deceased donor play an important role in the therapy of extensive and deeply burned patients. However, there is a vital deficit of allogeneic skin donors, and the reserves of human allogeneic skin grafts are not sufficient. The goal of this work was to analyze the level of knowledge and attitudes of Polish society in the field of transplantation, with particular emphasis on allogeneic skin transplantation. The study used a self-made questionnaire comprised of 23 questions. 1000 respondents took part in this research. The respondents were a diverse group in terms of age, sex, education, and place of residence. The obtained results show a general positive attitude of the respondents towards the idea of transplantology. However, people with lower education presented a more negative attitude towards the donation of tissues and organs. Additionally younger people were not able to clearly declare readiness for organ procurement. What is more data analysis revealed certain gaps in more detailed knowledge and surprising attitudes. In that respect, the lack of awareness about the criteria for determining brain death could be mentioned. There was also a lack of acceptance for skin procurement in specific population groups. It can therefore be concluded that a key role in the success of the idea of transplantation in Poland is the broad and systematic education of the society.

Differences in response to PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy may be linked to the variability of growth factors and their receptor's genes. Considering that, we checked whether the platelet-derived growth factor receptor beta gene (The treatment efficacy was analyzed over time (2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 52, and 104 weeks after PRP injection) on 107 patients (132 elbows) using PROMs (patient-reported outcome measures), namely VAS (Visual Analog Scale), QDASH (quick version of Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand) and PRTEE (Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation). Five polymorphisms of theThe CC (rs3828610) and GG (rs3756311 and rs3756312) genotypes had a particularly strong impact on the effectiveness of the therapy, as measured by the values of PROMs, both in additive as well as dominant/recessive models. (1) Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence of shoulder dislocation and to estimate non-modifiable risk factors in rural and urban subgroups in Poland. (2) Methods: The study covered the entire Polish population, divided into urban and rural subgroups and observed between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2014. The study population consisted of Polish patients with a diagnosis of shoulder dislocation (S43.0) in accordance with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10). Records were obtained from the public health care provider National Health Found (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia, NFZ). Based on these data, we assessed shoulder dislocation incidence and risk rates, stratifying the study sample by sex, age and place of residence (rural or urban) using the Central Statistical Office (GUS) personal territorial code (TERYT). (3) The incidence was 25.97/100,000 person-years in rural areas and 25.62/100,000 person-years in urban areas. We did not find significant differences in the incidence between the two subgroups. The highest incidence (75.12/100,000 person-years) and the highest risk for shoulder dislocation were found among subjects 80+ years old living in urban areas. Furthermore, men in the third decade of their life living in urban areas showed the highest risk (OR = 7.8, 95% CI; 6.44–9.45, p < 0.001). In both subgroups, the likelihood of shoulder dislocation was significantly lower for the female sex and among children ≤9 years old. However, girls living in rural areas presented with a significantly higher likelihood for dislocation compared with their peers living in urban environments. (4) Conclusions: No significant difference in the incidence rate of shoulder dislocation between Polish residents living in rural and urban areas emerged. The highest incidence was observed among female subjects 80+ years old living in urban environments. The highest risk was found among men in the third decade of their life living in urban areas. In addition, girls in the first decade of their life living in rural areas had more shoulder dislocations than girls living in urban environments. Shoulder dislocation is dominant in female subjects aged 70–79 living in rural areas and in females 80+ years old living in urban areas.

Background: The present study aimed to determine whether the polymorphisms of the 11q23.3 locus affect the risk and mortality of coronary artery disease in 5-year and 10-year observations. Methods: The study group consisted of 519 subjects: 276 patients with CAD and 243 blood donors as controls. The genotyping of polymorphisms (rs10750097, rs3741298, and rs1729410) was performed using the TaqMan-PCR method. Survival was defined as the period from the angiographic confirmation of CAD to cardiovascular death, and the endpoint was defined as death from cardiovascular causes. Results: The G allele of the rs1729410 polymorphism increased the risk of CAD (OR = 1.55, p = 0.04) and showed a synergistic correlation with overweight/obesity (additive synergy index (SI) = 11.01, p < 0.001). The carriers of the GG genotype and over-normative LDL levels increased the risk of CAD by over 12-fold higher than expected (multiplicative synergy index (SIM) = 12.34, p < 0.001). In the case of the rs10750097 variant, an effect on mortality was shown in both 5-year and 10-year periods. Conclusion: The results revealed that the rs1729410 polymorphism increases the risk of CAD in synergy with traditional risk factors, and the rs10750097 polymorphism of the 11q23.3 locus affects the risk of death in patients with CAD.

(1) Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an inflammatory skin disease with recurrent, chronic, painful, and purulent skin lesions. Topical or systemic antibiotics are the most widely used treatments for the management of mild stages of the disease. In chronic cases (Hurley II/III), wide excision of lesions should be considered. During reconstructive surgery, the most problematic aspect is wound closure. Very large excisional wounds require reconstructive techniques such as skin flaps, skin grafts, or both. Surgical methods have their limitations, so reconstructive methods in HS surgery need to be continuously improved through the use of, for example, platelet-rich plasma and acellular dermal matrix; (2) Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes and efficacy of surgical treatment of patients with HS using local skin flaps injected with PRP compared to a group of local skin flaps without platelet-rich plasma injection, an acellular dermal matrix, and split-thickness skin graft co-grafts. Sixty-one patients (29 males and 32 females) were included in the study. Most patients were characterized by Hurley grade III HS; (3) Results: The use of PRP injection in reconstructions (skin flaps) improved healing and reduced the number of complications, a notable trend in this study. A co-graft of acellular dermal matrix and split-thickness skin graft gave better therapeutic results than split-thickness skin graft alone (fewer days in hospital, fewer postoperative complications); (4) Conclusions: PRP injected into skin flaps, co-grafted acellular dermal matrix, and split-thickness skin grafts are good options for the surgical treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa.

PROMs values, and clinical and platelet parameters were compared between genotype variants of the studied polymorphisms (rs1800814, rs2070958 and rs62433334).The A allele carriers (rs1800814) had significantly lower values of VAS (week 12), QDASH, and PRTEE (weeks 8, 12). The T allele carriers (rs2070958) had significantly lower values of VAS (weeks 8, 12), QDASH, and PRTEE (weeks 4-12). Additional forms of therapy (manual and physical) were necessary significantly more often in GG (rs1800814) and CC (rs2070958) homozygotes.The

Reduced physical activity or inappropriate training can cause the development of postural abnormalities. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between intensive, controlled physical activity, such as karate, and postural parameters. The study group consisted of 57 young karate competitors aged 9–12 years. The control group included 76 healthy, active children in similar age. The children’s posture, activity level, and time in front of electronic devices were evaluated. The following body posture assessments were carried out: Adams’ test, evaluation of the plumb line, evaluation of the kyphosis, and lordosis angles using a digital inclinometer and shoulder blade position measurements using a pediscoliometer. In the majority of cases, despite evidence of an increase or decrease in the values of the plumb line and scapulae level, the results were still within the normal ranges. In 71.93% of the examined karate-training children, a decrease in torso rotation was noted. The study revealed a visible difference in postural muscle strength by the Mathiass screening test ( P < 0.00001 ). The children in the control group spent more time in front electronic devices than the karate-training children did ( P < 0.007 ). Postural defects regression was more often observed in the study group than in the controls ( P < 10 − 8 ). The frequency of postural defects stabilization was also significantly higher in the study group than in the control children ( P = 0.001 ). Conversely, postural defects progression was significantly more frequent in the control group than in young karate competitors ( P < 10 − 8 ). These differences remained significant in subgroups of girls and boys. Physical activity performed regularly and under the direction of a professional trainer can prevent postural disorders.

Background: The multifocality and multicentrality of breast cancer (MFMCC) are the significant aspects that determine a specialist’s choice between applying breast-conserving therapy (BCT) or performing a mastectomy. This study aimed to assess the usefulness of mammography (MG), contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in women diagnosed with breast cancer before qualifying for surgical intervention to visualize other (additional) cancer foci. Methods: The study included 60 breast cancer cases out of 630 patients initially who underwent surgery due to breast cancer from January 2015 to April 2019. MG, CESM, and MRI were compared with each other in terms of the presence of MFMCC and assessed for compliance with the postoperative histopathological examination (HP). Results: Histopathological examination confirmed the presence of MFMCC in 33/60 (55%) patients. The sensitivity of MG in detecting MFMCC was 50%, and its specificity was 95.83%. For CESM, the sensitivity was 85.29%, and the specificity was 96.15%. For MRI, all the above-mentioned parameters were higher as follows: sensitivity—91.18%, specificity—92.31%. Conclusions: In patients with MFMCC, both CESM and MRI are highly sensitive in the detection of additional cancer foci. Both CESM and MRI change the extent of surgical intervention in every fourth patient.

The aim of the study was to perform family-based association analysis of PRKCB1, CBLN1 and KCNMB4 gene polymorphisms and autism disorder. We comprised 206 Caucasian children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and their biological parents. In transmission/disequilibrium test we observed that T-allele of the rs198198 polymorphism of the PRKCB1 gene was more often transmitted to affected children in the male subgroup (p = 0.010). Additionally, the T carrier state was significantly associated with hypotonia (p = 0.048). In the female subgroup, the T-allele carriers more often showed more mobile/vital behavior (p = 0.046). In conclusion, our study showed that the rs198198 of the PRKCB1 gene may be associated with ASD in men and with some features characteristic for the disorder.

Polymorphic variants of the CYP7A1 gene can increase the risk of atherosclerosis-based coronary artery disease (CAD) and modify serum lipid markers. Method: We studied haplotype-tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms of CYP7A1 in the Caucasian population and if they are associated with CAD, its symptoms, and any of its risk factors. Results: We did not find the genetic variants of CYP7A1 to be associated with an increased risk of CAD. However, we did find that the common rs3808607 variant is associated with modified concentrations of serum total cholesterol and LDL. We also found that the C allele and the CC genotype of the rs11786580 are more frequent in patients with myocardial infarction. This association was especially strong after the group differentiation by sex.

(1) Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa is a disease that affects the intimacy of patients. This disease reduces the quality of life and functioning of patients in everyday life. The surgical treatment of HS is one of the treatments for HS that can improve the quality of life. (2) Methods: The main goal of this study was to assess quality of life before the surgical treatment and after the surgical treatment of HS at Center for Burn Treatment in Siemianowice Śląskie, Poland, using the EQ-5D-5L survey before the operation and at follow-up (6 months after). (3) Results: The average quality of life measured with the EQ-5D-5L survey before therapy was 39.3 ± 20.1 (min., 0; max., 60; most frequent value, 50), whereas after surgical treatment, the mean quality of life was 89.5 ± 12.5 (min., 50; max., 100; most frequent value, 100). The average increase in the quality of life was 50.2 ± 19.5 (min., 30; max., 100; most frequent value, 30), and it was statistically significant (p < 0.001).

The effectiveness of PRP is greater in A allele (rs1800814) and T allele (rs2070958) carriers.

New records of Wrinkled Bark Beetle Rhysodes sulcatus (Fabricius, 1787) (Coleoptera: Rhysodidae) in the Murcki Forests (the Upper Silesia) – habitat characteristics and threats. This study presents new faunistic records of Wrinkled Bark Beetle Rhysodes sulcatus from the Murcki Forests, located in the Upper Silesia. During field research carried out in the period 2009-2020, the species was revealed in 18 sites. All newly discovered sites are located outside the protected area of the nature reserve “Las Murckowski”. Therefore, Rh. sulcatus is devoid of biocenotic protection and is highly endangered due to planned management activities in this area. In order to protect the found population of the species, the authors suggest extending the boundaries of the nature reserve to include the area of all forest divisions in which the species has been found. Additionally any forest management should be limited in adjacent areas. The p22phox is a critical component of vascular NADPH oxidases and is encoded by the CYBA gene. It was shown that functionally relevant polymorphisms of the CYBA gene -930A > G, -852C > G, -675A > T, -536C > T, 214C > T (previously described as 242C > T), *24A > G (previously described as 640A > G), and *49A > G modulate generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). To analyse whether the CYBA gene polymorphisms -852C > G, -675A > T, and -536C > T were associated with coronary artery disease (CAD), and to designate haplotype blocks. Four hundred and ninety subjects: 245 patients with CAD and 245 age and sex-matched controls. The polymorphisms were genotyped using the PCR-RFLP method and the TagMan® Pre-designed SNP Genotyping Assay. The analysed polymorphisms do not form haplotype blocks. Case-control study revealed that the -930 G/-675T and -930G/*49G diplotypes were a CAD risk factor. The 675T/*49G diplotype can modulate CAD risk in women. The protective effect reducing CAD risk in women was related to the -930A/-675T and -930A/*49A diplotypes. Carrier state of the -852C allele (-852C > G) was associated with multivessel stenosis while the CC genotype of the -536C > T polymorphism was more frequent in patients with peripheral artery disease. Hypercholesterolemic, cigarette smokers had an increased risk of CAD, especially C - 852 allele (-852C > G) carriers (SIM = 3.54; odds ratios (OR) = 10.01, p < 0.000). The CYBA gene polymorphisms modulate the risk of CAD but do not form a haplotype blocks.

The cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene encodes a hydrophobic glycoprotein that plays a crucial role in the reverse transport of cholesterol. The aim of the present study was to determine whether CETP polymorphisms (rs1532624, rs247616 and rs708272) are associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) in a Polish population. Serum lipid levels and single nucleotide polymorphisms of CETP genes were determined in 494 subjects: 248 patients with premature CAD and 246 blood donors as controls. Selected polymorphisms were examined using TaqMan PCR analysis. We found that CAD risk was significantly higher for CC homozygotes and C allele carriers of the rs247616 polymorphism than for carriers with the T allele (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.29–2.76, p = 0.001 and OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.14–1.99, p = 0.003) and likewise for the CC genotype of the rs1532624 polymorphism than for those with the A allele (OR 1.59, 95% CI 1.05–2.40, p = 0.026). The aim of this study was to evaluate five-year prevalence of recurrent shoulder dislocation in the entire Polish population. The study involved the entire Polish population between 01 January 2010 and 31 December 2014. Demographic data were retrieved from the Central Statistical Office of Poland. Data on the number of shoulder joint dislocations were retrieved from the database of the National Health Fund. We identified 32,253 Polish residents with shoulder instability. About 0.1% of Polish residents suffered from recurrent shoulder dislocation. WstępWrodzone wady rozwojowe występują u ok. 2–4% noworodków. W Polsce od 1997 roku działa Polski Rejestr Wrodzonych Wad Rozwojowych, który pozwala na ich monitorowanie w populacji polskiej. Analiza regionalnych różnic w częstości występowania wad wrodzonych może mieć istotne znaczenie w poszukiwaniu czynników ryzyka oraz analizie działań profilaktycznych na danym terenie. Celem niniejszej pracy była ocena ryzyka urodzeń noworodków z wrodzonymi wadami rozwojowymi układu mięśniowo-szkieletowego w województwie śląskim w odniesieniu do pozostałego obszaru Polski objętego rejestrem.Materiał i metodyPraca powstała na bazie danych pochodzących z Polskiego Rejestru Wrodzonych Wad Rozwojowych z lat 2001–2006. Grupę badaną stanowiły zgłoszone do rejestru dzieci do 2 r.ż., u których rozpoznano wadę rozwojową, dzieci martwo urodzone z wadą oraz te, u których rozpoznano wadę w okresie prenatalnym. Wszystkie analizy statystyczne przeprowadzono przy użyciu oprogramowania Epi Info 7.WynikiCzęstość wystąpienia wrodzonych wad rozwojowych układu mięśniowo-szkieletowego na terenie województwa śląskiego była wyższa niż na pozostałym obszarze Polski we wszystkich analizowanych latach, z wyjątkiem roku 2003. Największy wzrost ryzyka stwierdzono w przypadku wad Q68 oraz Q67. Częstość wrodzonych wad na Śląsku wykazywała tendencję spadkową w kolejnych latach od 2001 do 2006.WnioskiWrodzone wady rozwojowe układu mięśniowo-szkieletowego występowały częściej na terenie województwa śląskiego, niż na pozostałym obszarze Polski we wszystkich analizowanych latach, z wyjątkiem roku 2003.

Polymorphic variants of the

Purpose. Single nucleotide polymorphisms of theCYBAgene may modify the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the⁎49A>G (rs7195830) polymorphism is associated with CAD.Materials and Methods.CYBAgene⁎49A>G polymorphism was determined in 481 subjects: 242 patients with premature CAD and 239 age and sex matched controls using the fluorescently labeled allele-specific oligonucleotides method.Results. The frequency of the⁎49G allele carrier state was significantly higher in patients than in controls (84.8% versus 76.6%, resp.,P=0.020), as well as the frequency of the⁎49G allele (62.2% versus 54.0%,P=0.009). Both factors were associated with CAD in the analyzed population (OR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.04–2.76 for GG+AG versus AA and OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.08–1.83 for⁎49G versus ⁎49A). Carrier state of the⁎49G allele was a stronger and independent risk factor for CAD among women (OR = 4.35, 95% CI: 1.50–13.20,P=0.002), as well as the⁎49G allele (OR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.34–3.77,P=0.001). The⁎49G allele carrier state was also associated with left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with coronary artery disease (P=0.015).Conclusion. TheCYBAgene⁎49A>G polymorphism modifies the risk of coronary artery disease.

Background Pediatric ischemic stroke is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. As previous studies of children after stroke showed, dyslipidemias were very common in Polish and other European populations. Thus, looking for genetic factors predisposing to pediatric stroke, its symptoms, and outcome, we have analyzed 2 polymorphisms of the upstream stimulating factor 1 (USF-1) gene. Materials and Methods The study group consisted of 82 children with stroke, 156 parents, and 146 controls. We used 2 alternative methods: the case–control model and the analysis of families using the transmission disequilibrium test. The 2 polymorphisms, rs2516839 and rs3737787, were genotyped using the TaqMan Pre-Designed SNP Genotyping Assay. The Statistica 10.0 software was used in all statistical analyses. Results We did not observe any statistical differences in genotype and allele frequencies between patients and controls. There were also no significant differences in the transmission of alleles from the parents to the affected children. However, we have observed that the TT genotype of the rs2516839 polymorphism was more common in patients with epilepsy and dysarthria, whereas the TT genotype of the rs3737787 polymorphism was more frequent in the group of patients with a decrease in intellectual functioning. Conclusions Our study did not show any associations between the 2 analyzed polymorphisms of the USF-1 gene and pediatric ischemic stroke. However, we have observed an influence of specific genotypes on the outcome of stroke, including epilepsy, dysarthria, and a decrease in intellectual functioning.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the USF1 gene (upstream stimulatory factor 1) influence plasma lipid levels. This study aims to determine whether USF1 SNPs interact with traditional risk factors of atherosclerosis to increase coronary artery disease (CAD) risk. In the present study serum lipid levels and USF1 gene polymorphisms (rs2516839 and rs3737787) were determined in 470 subjects: 235 patients with premature CAD and 235 controls. A trend of increasing triglycerides (TG) levels in relation to the C allele dose of rs2516839 SNP was observed. The synergistic effect of cigarette smoking and C allele carrier state on CAD risk was also found (SIM = 2.69, p = 0.015). TG levels differentiated significantly particular genotypes in smokers (1.53 mmol/L for TT, 1.80 mmol/L for CT and 2.27 mmol/L for CC subjects). In contrast, these differences were not observed in the non-smokers subgroup (1.57 mmol/L for TT, 1.46 mmol/L for CT and 1.49 mmol/L for CC subjects). In conclusion, the rs2516839 polymorphism may modulate serum triglyceride levels in response to cigarette smoking. Carriers of the C allele seem to be particularly at risk of CAD, when exposed to cigarette smoking.

The aim of the study was to identify and analyze non-modifiable risk factors for recurrence after a first-time post-traumatic dislocation of the shoulder in the entire Polish population. The entire Polish population was included in a cohort study. Patients diagnosed with primary post-traumatic dislocation of the shoulder between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2011 were identified and followed up from January 1st, 2010 to December 31st, 2014. Incidence and recurrence rates and odds ratios (OR) were calculated. Demographic data were obtained from Poland’s Central Statistical Office. Data on the number of patients with primary post-traumatic shoulder dislocation were drawn from the National Health Fund database. A total of 21,739 patients (14,466 males and 7273 females) with a primary shoulder dislocation in Poland were identified in 2010 and 2011. There were 3341 (15.4%) recurrences.
