1. The application of citric acid solutions for selective removal of zinc from steelmaking dust

Abstract

Steelmaking dust is one of the wastes which are produced by ironworks. This kind of waste is a byproduct produced mainly in electric arc furnace. Zinc content in dust is different and depends on the charge processed in the furnace. The basic technology used for recycling steelmaking dust is Waelz process, however, it requires a large amount of reducer and generates a lot of waste which needs to be stored. First stage in this study was to analyze if steelmaking dust was safe to be exposed to atmospheric conditions. To verify this, the dust was subjected to two kinds of standard leaching tests, TCLP and EN-12457-2. The amount of extracted elements was considerable and that was why steelmaking dust should be treated as dangerous waste. Leaching in citric acid solutions was divided in four series. The first one was set to determine the time and temperature for most selective zinc leaching. Next series optimized three leaching parameters which were: citric acid concentration, liquid to solid phase ratio (l/s), and the stirring speed. Performed experiments showed the optimal conditions for selective leaching: temperature of 50°C, leaching time of 60 minutes, citric acid concentration of 0.5 mol/dm3, l/s ratio of 10, and stirring speed of 250 rpm.

Abstract

A \emph{tangram} is a word in which every letter occurs an even number of times. Such word can be cut into parts that can be arranged into two identical words. The minimum number of cuts needed is called the \emph{cut number} of a tangram. For example, the word $\mathtt{\color{red}{0102}\color{blue}{0102}}$ is a tangram with cut number one, while the word $\mathtt{\color{red}{01}\color{blue}{01023}\color{red}{023}}$ is a tangram with cut number two. Clearly, tangrams with cut number one coincide with the well known family of words, known as \emph{squares}, having the form $UU$ for some nonempty word $U$. A word $W$ \emph{avoids} a word $T$ if it is not possible to write $W=ATB$, for any words $A$ and $B$ (possibly empty). The famous 1906 theorem of Thue asserts that there exist arbitrarily long words avoiding squares over alphabet with just \emph{three} letters. Given a fixed number $k\geqslant 1$, how many letters are needed to avoid tangrams with the cut number at most $k$? Let $t(k)$ denote the minimum size of an alphabet needed for that purpose. By Thue's result we have $t(1)=3$, which easily implies $t(2)=3$. Curiously, these are currently the only known exact values of this function. In our main result we prove that $t(k)=\Theta(\log_2k)$. The proof uses \emph{entropy compression} argument and \emph{Zimin words}. By using a different method we prove that $t(k)\leqslant k+1$ for all $k\geqslant 4$, which gives more exact estimates for small values of $k$. The proof makes use of \emph{Dejean words} and a curious property of \emph{Gauss words}, which is perhaps of independent interest., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

To properly treat CVDs, scientists had to take a closer look at the factors that contribute to their pathogenesis and either modernize current pharmaceuticals or develop brand new treatments. Enhancement of current drugs, such as tolvaptan and omecamtiv mecarbil, sheds new light on already-known therapies. Tolvaptan, a vasopressin antagonist, could be adopted in heart failure therapy as it reduces pre- and afterload by decreasing systolic blood pressure and blood volume. Omecamtiv mecarbil, which is a myosin binding peptide, could aid cardiac contractility. The next generation vasodilators, serelaxin and ularitide, are based on naturally occurring peptides and they reduce peripheral vascular resistance and increase the cardiac index. In combination with their anti-inflammatory properties, they could turn out to be extremely potent drugs for heart failure treatment. Cardiotrophin has exceeded many researchers’ expectations, as evidence suggests that it could cause sarcomere hypertrophy without excessive proliferation of connective tissue. Rapid progress in gene therapy has caused it to finally be considered as one of the viable options for the treatment of CVDs. This novel therapeutic approach could restore stable heart function either by restoring depleted membrane proteins or by balancing the intracellular calcium concentration. 4. Accessible, At-Home Detection of Parkinson's Disease via Multi-task Video Analysis

Abstract

Limited accessibility to neurological care leads to underdiagnosed Parkinson's Disease (PD), preventing early intervention. Existing AI-based PD detection methods primarily focus on unimodal analysis of motor or speech tasks, overlooking the multifaceted nature of the disease. To address this, we introduce a large-scale, multi-task video dataset consisting of 1102 sessions (each containing videos of finger tapping, facial expression, and speech tasks captured via webcam) from 845 participants (272 with PD). We propose a novel Uncertainty-calibrated Fusion Network (UFNet) that leverages this multimodal data to enhance diagnostic accuracy. UFNet employs independent task-specific networks, trained with Monte Carlo Dropout for uncertainty quantification, followed by self-attended fusion of features, with attention weights dynamically adjusted based on task-specific uncertainties. To ensure patient-centered evaluation, the participants were randomly split into three sets: 60% for training, 20% for model selection, and 20% for final performance evaluation. UFNet significantly outperformed single-task models in terms of accuracy, area under the ROC curve (AUROC), and sensitivity while maintaining non-inferior specificity. Withholding uncertain predictions further boosted the performance, achieving 88.0+-0.3%$ accuracy, 93.0+-0.2% AUROC, 79.3+-0.9% sensitivity, and 92.6+-0.3% specificity, at the expense of not being able to predict for 2.3+-0.3% data (+- denotes 95% confidence interval). Further analysis suggests that the trained model does not exhibit any detectable bias across sex and ethnic subgroups and is most effective for individuals aged between 50 and 80. Requiring only a webcam and microphone, our approach facilitates accessible home-based PD screening, especially in regions with limited healthcare resources.

Abstract

With the STAR experiment at the BNL Relativisic Heavy Ion Collider, we characterize $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200 GeV p+Au collisions by event activity (EA) measured within the pseudorapidity range $eta$ $in$ [-5, -3.4] in the Au-going direction and report correlations between this EA and hard- and soft- scale particle production at midrapidity ($\eta$ $\in$ [-1, 1]). At the soft scale, charged particle production in low-EA p+Au collisions is comparable to that in p+p collisions and increases monotonically with increasing EA. At the hard scale, we report measurements of high transverse momentum (pT) jets in events of different EAs. In contrast with the soft particle production, high-pT particle production and EA are found to be inversely related. To investigate whether this is a signal of jet quenching in high-EA events, we also report ratios of pT imbalance and azimuthal separation of dijets in high- and low-EA events. Within our measurement precision, no significant differences are observed, disfavoring the presence of jet quenching in the highest 30% EA p+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200 GeV., Comment: 12 page, 9 figures

This type of diabetes mellitus affects allograft survival, cardiovascular complications and overall patient survival. The modifiable risk factors that contribute to PTDM include obesity, some viral infections (eg, hepatitis C virus, cytomegalovirus) and especially immunosuppressive drugs including corticosteroids, tacrolimus, cyclosporine and sirolimus. Currently, predisposing genetic factors have been considered important in PTDM development. The commonly evaluated genetic determinants include genes encoding transcription factors, cytokines, chemokines, adipokines, ionic channels, glucose transporters, cytochrome P450 enzymes and other enzymes metabolizing drugs, drug transporters. Unfortunately, the results of studies are inconclusive and differ between populations. There is a need for large genome-wide association study to identify the genetic risk factors associated with PTDM development. Abstract

Flow coefficients ($v_2$ and $v_3$) are measured in high-multiplicity $p$+Au, $d$+Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The measurements utilize two-particle correlations with a pseudorapidity requirement of $|\eta| <$ 0.9 and a pair gap of $|\Delta\eta|>1.0$. The primary focus is on analysis methods, particularly the subtraction of non-flow contributions. Four established non-flow subtraction methods are applied to determine $v_n$, validated using the HIJING event generator. $v_n$ values are compared across the three collision systems at similar multiplicities; this comparison cancels the final state effects and isolates the impact of initial geometry. While $v_2$ values show differences among these collision systems, $v_3$ values are largely similar, consistent with expectations of subnucleon fluctuations in the initial geometry. The ordering of $v_n$ differs quantitatively from previous measurements using two-particle correlations with a larger rapidity gap, which, according to model calculations, can be partially attributed to the effects of longitudinal flow decorrelations. The prospects for future measurements to improve our understanding of flow decorrelation and subnucleonic fluctuations are also discussed., Comment: 29 pages, 25 figures

Abstract

We report the systematic measurement of protons and light nuclei production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 3 GeV by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) spectra of protons ($p$), deuterons ($d$), tritons ($t$), $^{3}\mathrm{He}$, and $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ are measured from mid-rapidity to target rapidity for different collision centralities. We present the rapidity and centrality dependence of particle yields ($dN/dy$), average transverse momentum ($\langle p_{T}\rangle$), yield ratios ($d/p$, $t/p$,$^{3}\mathrm{He}/p$, $^{4}\mathrm{He}/p$), as well as the coalescence parameters ($B_2$, $B_3$). The 4$\pi$ yields for various particles are determined by utilizing the measured rapidity distributions, $dN/dy$. Furthermore, we present the energy, centrality, and rapidity dependence of the compound yield ratios ($N_{p} \times N_{t} / N_{d}^{2}$) and compare them with various model calculations. The physics implications of those results on the production mechanism of light nuclei and on QCD phase structure are discussed., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV $p$+$p$ collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios $C_{4}/C_{2}$, $C_{5}/C_{1}$, and $C_{6}/C_{2}$ decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios $C_{5}/C_{1}$ and $C_{6}/C_{2}$ approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in $p$+$p$ collisions., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted version by PLB

Abstract

At the origin of the Universe, asymmetry between the amount of created matter and antimatter led to the matter-dominated Universe as we know today. The origins of this asymmetry remain not completely understood yet. High-energy nuclear collisions create conditions similar to the Universe microseconds after the Big Bang, with comparable amounts of matter and antimatter. Much of the created antimatter escapes the rapidly expanding fireball without annihilating, making such collisions an effective experimental tool to create heavy antimatter nuclear objects and study their properties, hoping to shed some light on existing questions on the asymmetry between matter and antimatter. Here we report the first observation of the antimatter hypernucleus \hbox{$^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$}, composed of a $\bar{\Lambda}$ , an antiproton and two antineutrons. The discovery was made through its two-body decay after production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In total, 15.6 candidate \hbox{$^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$} antimatter hypernuclei are obtained with an estimated background count of 6.4. The lifetimes of the antihypernuclei \hbox{$^3_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$} and \hbox{$^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$} are measured and compared with the lifetimes of their corresponding hypernuclei, testing the symmetry between matter and antimatter. Abstract

The current program at Fermilab involves the construction of a new superconducting linear accelerator (LINAC) to replace the existing warm version. The new LINAC, together with other planned improvements, is in support of proton beam intensities in the Main Injector (MI) that will exceed 2 MW. Measuring the transverse profiles of these high intensity beams in a ring requires non-invasive techniques. The MI uses ionization profile monitors as its only profile system. An alternative technique involves measuring the deflection of a probe beam of electrons with a trajectory perpendicular to the proton beam. This type of device was installed in MI and initial studies of it have been previously presented. Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Radial artery is the preferred access for coronary interventions. However, the procedure is sometimes interrupted by a spasm which causes pain, prolongs the procedure, and can force the access crossover. AIM: To observe factors contributing to a symptomatic radial artery spasm. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this prospective study, we present results of 103 consecutive patients regarding radial artery spasm and angiographic image of the punctured artery. Angiography of the radial artery was performed in 70 (68.0%) patients. Potential risk factors for radial artery spasm were evaluated. RESULTS: The overall incidence of the radial artery spasm was high - 25 (24.3%). Signs of spasm were present in 37.1% of radial artery angiographies before the procedure and 60.1% after, however, it did not always indicate a symptomatic spasm. Risk factors related to radial artery spasm included female sex (OR = 2.94, p = 0.02), failure of the first puncture attempt (OR = 3.12, p = 0.014) and use of non-hydrophilic sheath (OR = 9.56, p = 0.036). Radial artery narrowing at the tip of the sheath was also a risk factor for spasm (p = 0.022). No spasms were observed after hydrophilic sheath application (n = 13). The administration of a radial cocktail was not observed to significantly decrease the spasm odds. CONCLUSIONS: Risk factors for radial artery spasm include female sex and multiple puncture attempts. Hydrophilic sheath coating protects against radial artery spasm. Overall signs of a spasm in the angiography are common and do not imply a symptomatic spasm, which can be predicted by a tight narrowing at the tip of the sheath.

Abstract

Abstract We report multi-differential measurements of strange hadron production ranging from mid- to target-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at a center-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 3 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC. K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ meson and Λ hyperon yields are measured via their weak decay channels. Collision centrality and rapidity dependences of the transverse momentum spectra and particle ratios are presented. Particle mass and centrality dependence of the average transverse momenta of Λ and K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ are compared with other strange particles, providing evidence of the development of hadronic rescattering in such collisions. The 4π yields of each of these strange hadrons show a consistent centrality dependence. Discussions on radial flow, the strange hadron production mechanism, and properties of the medium created in such collisions are presented together with results from hadronic transport and thermal model calculations.

Abstract

Abstract The anti-Shigella vaccine is one of the WHO’s top priorities. Every year the disease kills more than 200,000 people worldwide and poses a serious threat to children under 5 years of age and the elderly. Increasing antibiotic resistance and limitations in diagnostics emphasize the need to develop an effective vaccine. Recent research and clinical trials report multiple approaches used in Shigella-vaccine development. However, despite the efforts of researchers, pharmaceutical companies and health care organizations, there is no licensed vaccine against shigellosis available to the community. Here, we expressed, broadly characterized and demonstrated the protective properties of outer membrane protein C as an effective molecule serving as a universal antigen for Shigella vaccine. Most of the current approaches to the development of Shigella vaccine are based on the polysaccharide antigens, which are serotype specific and have always been challenging in terms of their high specificity, targeting the most exposed surface antigens identified for certain Shigella serotypes. Here, we confirm immunogenic and protective properties of the recombinant OmpC protein, which protects mice against a lethal dose of a virulent strain 2 weeks after active immunization.

Abstract

We report results on an elastic cross section measurement in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section is measured in the four-momentum transfer squared range $0.23 \leq -t \leq 0.67$ GeV$^2$. We find that a constant slope $B$ does not fit the data in the aforementioned $t$ range, and we obtain a much better fit using a second-order polynomial for $B(t)$. The $t$ dependence of $B$ is determined using six subintervals of $t$ in the STAR measured $t$ range, and is in good agreement with the phenomenological models. The measured elastic differential cross section $\mathrm{d}\sigma/\mathrm{dt}$ agrees well with the results obtained at $\sqrt{s} = 546$ GeV for proton--antiproton collisions by the UA4 experiment. We also determine that the integrated elastic cross section within the STAR $t$-range is $\sigma^\mathrm{fid}_\mathrm{el} = 462.1 \pm 0.9 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 1.1 (\mathrm {syst.}) \pm 11.6 (\mathrm {scale})$~$\mu\mathrm{b}$., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures Version as published in Physics Letters B. Abstract

In this contribution we study the possibility of the formation of cosmic ray ensembles (CRE) created by the interaction of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons with the magnetic field of the Sun. The lack of observation of those UHE and the difficulties for their identification given the current methodologies motivates this study. We performed simulations using the PRESHOWER program in order to simulate the expected extensive air showers which might be spatially correlated generated upon entering the Earth's atmosphere. We found characteristic features like very thing and extremely elongates cascades of secondary photons with their corresponding energies spanning the entire cosmic range spectrum. Shower footprints are as large as hundreds of kilometres. An application of this study is the scenario of gamma-ray emission from the vicinity of the Sun as a result of ultra-high energy photon cascading in the solar magnetic field in order to understand recent observations made by the HAWC and Fermi-LAT observatories., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2023) 26 July - 3 August, 2023 Nagoya, Japan
