1. The Mellon Fedora Project: Digital Library Architecture Meets XML and Web Services

Abstract

The University of Virginia received a grant of $1,000,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to enable the Library, in collaboration with Cornell University, to build a digital object repository system based on the Flexible Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (Fedora). The new system demonstrates how distributed digital library architecture can be deployed using web-based technologies, including XML and Web services. The new system is designed to be a foundation upon which interoperable web-based digital libraries can be built. Virginia and collaborating partners in the US and UK will evaluate the system using a diverse set of digital collections. The software will be made available to the public as an open-source release.

2. Flexible and Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (FEDORA)

Abstract

We describe a digital object and respository architecture for storing and disseminating digital library content. The key features of the architecture are: (1) support for heterogeneous data types; (2) accommodation of new types as they emerge; (3) aggregation of mixed, possibly distributed, data into complex objects; (4) the ability to specify multiple content disseminations of these objects; and (5) the ability to associate rights management schemes with these disseminations. Abstract

We describe the motivation for moving policy enforcement for access control down to the digital object level. The reasons for this include handling of item-specific behaviors, adapting to evolution of digital objects, and permitting objects to move among repositories and portable devices. 4. Culture Not Numbers: Dilemmas and Discourses of the Underrepresentation of Women in Computing

Abstract

Where are the women in computing? This dissertation explores the underrepresentation of women in computing as a cultural issue. After considering the role of women in the history of computing, it examines contemporary interventions to address gender bias and promote gender diversity in the tech sector and Silicon Valley. Not for profit organizations operate as intermediaries that work to raise awareness of gender bias and facilitate institutional alignment on diversity policy and practice across corporate, academic, and the public sectors. This research used a multi-method approach that included critical discourse analysis, participant observation, and qualitative method. Moments of discourse were analyzed to reveal and illuminate dilemmas such as the phenomenon of unconscious bias and the prospect and dilemma of male allies for culture change. Also explored was the tension between focusing on diversity metrics vs. mounting intervention to produce durable culture change the face of deeply entrenched attitudes and practices that push back overt and subtle ways. Gendered occupational identities and biased institutional practices reverberate through the tech sector and more broadly in the structures of society. The conclusion raises uncomfortable questions, such as whether the work on gender diversity is ever "done," and who will continue to put pressure on companies to reconcile tensions between business performance and social justice. 8. Supporting Scholarly Inquiry: Incorporating Users in the Design of the Digital Library.

Abstract

This study used focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires to collect input for developing the Mann Library Gateway at Cornell University. This Web-based information system provides access to catalogs, indexes, directories, numeric datasets, full-text documents, and spatial files. Concluded that scholars would benefit from adaptive, flexible user interfaces, enabling easy navigation. (PEN)
